Introduction: Center of pressure (COP) parameters are frequently assessed to analyze movement disorders in humans and animals. Methodological discrepancies are a major concern when evaluating conflicting study results. This study aimed to assess the inter-observer reliability and test-retest reliability of body COP parameters including mediolateral and craniocaudal sway, total length, average speed and support surface in healthy dogs during quiet standing on a pressure plate. Additionally, it sought to determine the minimum number of trials and the shortest duration necessary for accurate COP assessment. Materials and methods: Twelve clinically healthy dogs underwent three repeated trials, which were analyzed by three independent observers to evaluate inter-observer reliability. Test-retest reliability was assessed across the three trials per dog, each lasting 20 seconds (s). Selected 20 s measurements were analyzed in six different ways: 1 × 20 s, 1 × 15 s, 2 × 10 s, 4 × 5 s, 10 × 2 s, and 20 × 1 s. Results: Results demonstrated excellent inter-observer reliability (ICC ≥ 0.93) for all COP parameters. However, only 5 s, 10 s, and 15 smeasurements achieved the reliability threshold (ICC ≥ 0.60) for all evaluated parameters. Discussion: The shortest repeatable durations were obtained from either two 5 s measurements or a single 10 s measurement. Most importantly, statistically significant differences were observed between the different measurement durations, which underlines the need to standardize measurement times in COP analysis. The results of this study aid scientists in implementing standardized methods, thereby easing comparisons across studies and enhancing the reliability and validity of research findings in veterinary medicine. Background information: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Kinesio Taping on the trajectory of the forelimb and the muscle activity of the M. brachiocephalicus and the M. extensor carpi radialis in horses. 19 horses and ponies of different breeds (body weight: 496±117 kg), gender (8 mares, 10 geldings and 3 stallions) and ages (14.9±6.9 years old) were analysed without Kinesio Tape (“no tape”), with Kinesio Tape (muscle facilitation application on both muscles of both sides, “with tape”) and immediately after Kinesio Taping (“post tape”) through kinematic motion analysis and surface electromyography on a treadmill at the walk (speed: 1.5±0.1 m/s) and trot (speed: 3.1±0.3 m/s). Results: The results of the surface electromyography (maximum muscle activity at the walk and trot) and the kinematic motion analysis (maximum stride length and maximum height of the forelimbs flight arc at the walk and trot) showed that there were no significant differences between "no tape", "with tape" and "post tape". Conclusion: To sum up, Kinesio Taping on the M. brachiocephalicus and the M. extensor carpi radialis does not affect (in a positive or negative manner) the trajectory of the forelimb or the muscle activity of the M. brachiocephalicus and the M. extensor carpi radialis in horses. Background Inclined or slippery surfaces and various other types of obstacles are common demands in our environment. Dogs with impaired locomotion might have difficulties to manage rough terrain. Gait analyses using force plates or pressure plates, which are well established to characterize limb loads in human medicine as well as in animals, are mostly limited to level surfaces. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cross-slope walking in ten healthy Labrador Retrievers using a pressure plate walkway system. The dogs walked over the pressure plate on a level surface, with a lateral elevation angle of 10° (CS1) or 15° (CS2) until five valid trials were achieved. Three measurements were obtained at weekly intervals. Peak vertical force (PFz), vertical impulse (IFz), step length, and velocity were determined. Results Compared to level walking (LW), cross-slope walking was associated with a significant decrease in GRF of the up-slope (US) hindlimb, which was compensated for by the downslope (DS) forelimb. The other diagonal limb pair showed less pronounced effects during CS1, but in CS2 more weight was shifted onto the DS hindlimb during the first two measurements, thus reducing weight on the US forelimb (for IFz). The effect diminished from trial to trial, with GRF values approaching LW standards finally. The IFz was a more sensitive measure than the PFz. The step length of the DS forelimb was significantly decreased in both cross-slope conditions, while the step length of the US forelimb only decreased during CS2., Conclusions The dogs adapted their gait pattern and step length to compensate for the discrepancy in apparent leg length caused by the cross-slope. The results suggest that cross-slope walking requires functional musculoskeletal adaptations that may be difficult for animals with impaired locomotion. A treadmill was used to perform continuous walking tests in a limited space that can be covered by marker-based optical motion capture systems. Most treadmill-based gait data are analyzed based on gait cycle percentage. However, achieving continuous walking motion trajectories over time without time normalization is often required, even if tests are performed under treadmill walking conditions. This study presents a treadmill-to-overground mapping method of optical marker trajectories for treadmill-based continuous gait analysis, by adopting a simple concept of virtual origin. The position vector from the backward moving virtual origin to a targeted marker within a limited walking volume is the same as the position vector from the fixed origin to the forward moving marker over the ground. With the proposed method, it is possible (i) to observe the change in physical quantity visually during the treadmill walking, and (ii) to obtain overground-mapped gait data for evaluating the accuracy of the inertial-measurement-unit-based trajectory estimation. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified from various treadmill walking tests, which showed that the total travel displacement error rate was 0.32% on average. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reliability of repeated measurements of vertical ground reaction force (GRF) variables was determined using 10 clinically sound adult dogs walking on a treadmill three times daily on three different days. Peak vertical force, vertical impulse and duration of stance phase of each limb were determined and analysed for significant differences within and between days and between dogs. Contributions to the variance of GRF were determined using a random effect model including dogs, different days, trials and extremities. ANOVA did not show any significant differences in variables within and between days, but did reveal differences between dogs. Variance was mainly seen in different dogs, whereas different days and trials were less important factors. It was concluded that the ground reaction forces determined by a treadmill system are suitable and provide reproducible parameters in canine gait analysis. Such treadmill/force plate systems allow the simultaneous measurement of all four legs of dogs at a constant velocity walk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
