Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have been hailed as a promising hydrogen energy technology due to high energy conversion efficiency, zero carbon emission and the potential independence on scare and expensive noble metal electrocatalysts. A variety of platinum group metal (PGM)‐free catalysts has been developed with superior catalytic performance to noble metal benchmarks toward cathodic oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). However, PGM electrocatalysts still dominate the anodic catalyst research because the kinetics of hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) are two or three orders of magnitude slower than in that acidic media. Therefore, it is urgently desirable to improve noble metal utilization efficiency and/or develop high‐performance PGM‐free electrocatalysts for HOR, thus promoting the real‐world implementation of AEMFCs. In this review, the current research progress of electrocatalysts for HOR in alkaline media is summarized. We start with the discussion on the current HOR reaction mechanisms and existing controversies. Then, methodologies to improve the HOR performance are reviewed. Following these principles, the recently developed HOR electrocatalysts including PGM and PGM‐free HOR electrocatalysts in alkaline media are systematically introduced. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have aroused great interest in the scientific community in recent years due to their unique physicochemical properties and potential applications in different fields. To date, much research has been conducted on the ingenious design and rational construction of GQDs‐based nanomaterials used as electrode materials and/or electrocatalysts. Despite these efforts, research on the efficient synthesis and application of GQDs‐based nanomaterials is still in the early stages of development and timely updates of recent research progress on new design concepts, synthetic strategies, and significant breakthroughs in GQDs‐based nanomaterials are highly desired. In light of the above, the effect of synthetic methods on the final product of the GQDs, the GQDs synthesis mechanism, and specific perspectives regarding the effect of the unique surface and structural properties of GQDs (e.g., defects, heteroatom doping, surface/edge state, size, conductivity) on the electrochemical energy‐related systems are discussed in‐depth in this review. Additionally, this review also focuses on the design of GQDs‐based composites and their applications in the fields of electrochemical energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors and batteries) and electrocatalysis (e.g., fuel cell, water splitting, CO2 reduction), along with constructive suggestions for addressing the remaining challenges in the field. Combining the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are bringing new opportunities to revolutionize ORR catalysis in terms of cost, activity and durability. However, the lack of high‐performance SACs as well as the fundamental understanding of their unique catalytic mechanisms call for serious advances in this field. Herein, for the first time, we develop an Ir‐N‐C single‐atom catalyst (Ir‐SAC) which mimics homogeneous iridium porphyrins for high‐efficiency ORR catalysis. In accordance with theoretical predictions, the as‐developed Ir‐SAC exhibits orders of magnitude higher ORR activity than iridium nanoparticles with a record‐high turnover frequency (TOF) of 24.3 e− site−1 s−1 at 0.85 V vs. RHE) and an impressive mass activity of 12.2 A mg−1Ir, which far outperforms the previously reported SACs and commercial Pt/C. Atomic structural characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that the high activity of Ir‐SAC is attributed to the moderate adsorption energy of reaction intermediates on the mononuclear iridium ion coordinated with four nitrogen atom sites. Herein, a novel binuclear active site structure, Co 2 N x C y , is intentionally designed and successfully fabricated to efficiently catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is achieved by precisely controlling the atomic scale structure of bimetal-organic frameworks before pyrolysis. Through discovering a two-atom site with Co-Co distance at 2.1–2.2 Å from aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), as well as a novel shortened Co-Co path (2.12 Å) from the X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we for the first time identified the binuclear Co 2 N X site in the pyrolyzed catalyst. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the structure is further confirmed as Co 2 N 5 . Excitingly, the Co 2 N 5 site performs approximately 12 times higher activity than the conventional CoN 4 site and the corresponding catalyst shows unprecedented catalytic activity in acidic electrolyte with half-wave potential of 0.79 V, approaching the commercial Pt/C catalyst and presenting the best one among the Co-N-C catalysts. Theoretical density functional theory calculations reveal that the novel binuclear site exhibits considerably reduced thermodynamic barrier towards ORR, thus contributing to the much higher intrinsic activity.
