The article discusses a study about bird responses to targeted vegetation focusing on the habitat enhancement at Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary in central-western Victoria. Bird surveys conducted between 1999-2001 showed the presence of 11 birds in native eucalypt forest on ridges and slopes, three in planted areas on river flats, 13 in planted areas on ridges and slopes and a small gully. Birds with maximum abundance in planted sites include Superb Fairy-wrens Malurus cyaneus, honey-eaters Meliphagidae, seed-eating, open-country birds and insectivorous guilds. Those found in native forests are bark- and canopy-foraging insectivores and frugivores. Bird abundance was attributed to planted native vegetation, native low shrubs, young wattles and Cherry Ballart Exocarpos cupressiformis.
