A fast-response and wide-view fringe-field switching LCD using patterned common electrodes is proposed. By applying a restoring pulse voltage on common electrodes, LC decay process is expedited. The GTG decay time can be reduced by >7X, depending on the applied erasing voltage. This new mode also preserves the wide-view characteristics as the conventional FFS mode. We report a single-domain LCD with quasi-collimated backlight and freeform optics engineered diffuser. Such a novel LCD exhibits similar luminance distribution to OLED for the first time, while keeping high transmittance, high contrast ratio over the entire 80° viewing cone, indistinguishable color shift, low ambient reflection, and minimum off-axis gray level distortion. We propose a kinetic model to characterize the image sticking phenomenon under nonuniform electric field in fringe field switching (FFS) LCDs by taking material properties and device parameters into account. This model agrees well with the experimental results. We investigate the voltage and temperature effects of image sticking based on this model. The image sticking of FFS cells employing positive and negative dielectric anisotropy LCs are compared and the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed differences are explained. We propose a new A-film-enhanced fringe field switching (A-FFS) liquid crystal display whose requireddΔnvalue is onlyλ/4, which is one-half of a conventional FFS. Fast response time can be achieved by either decreasing the cell gap (d) or choosing a low birefringence (Δn) and low-viscosity liquid crystal. The effect ofdΔnmismatch between A-film and FFS cell on contrast ratio is analysed.
