3. Vastness of Tribology Research Fields and Their Contribution to Sustainable Development.

Abstract

Tribology is related to all studies on friction, wear, and lubrication. One of the main aims of these studies is a reduction in friction and wear. Tribology is extremely vast, being also multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. Therefore, it is very difficult to organize the several tribology subjects in an unique way and different classifications have been proposed by different authors. In this work, several subjects treated by tribology are reviewed and organized in six branches: Fundamental Tribology, Tribology of Materials and Lubricants, Micro and Nanotribology, Industrial Tribology, Biotribology, and New Frontiers of Tribology. The main subjects treated by the six branches are briefly reviewed in this paper in order to highlight the vastness of tribology and its important contribution to sustainability. Particularly, friction and wear reductions are strictly related to greater efficiency and material saving, which means less energy losses and material wastes, less pollution and therefore a more sustainable life according to the sustainable development goals. 4. Friction-Induced Efficiency Losses and Wear Evolution in Hypoid Gears.

Abstract

A correct methodology to evaluate the friction coefficient in lubricated gear pairs is paramount for both the estimation of energy losses and the prediction of wear. In the first part of the paper, a methodology for estimating the coefficient of friction with a semi-empirical formulation is presented, and its results are also employed to analyze mechanical efficiency losses in a hypoid gearset. Hypoid gears have complex tooth surface geometries, and the entraining kinematics of the lubricant is quite involved. The second part of the paper showcases a simulated wear investigation based on the Archard model. The main focus is on the impact of the frequency adopted for updating the worn geometry of the gear and pinion teeth on the fidelity and consistency of the tribological outcomes. These are measured in terms of overall quantity of material removed and characteristics of the loaded contact pattern. More in detail, a sensitivity analysis is presented that compares the total wear of a hypoid gearset after 30 million cycles estimated using different geometry update steps. Contact pressures, which are necessary to perform the aforementioned analyses, are calculated through an accurate, state-of-the-art loaded tooth contact analysis solver. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Experimental study on circular eccentric cam–follower pairs.

Abstract

Experimental verifications of cam–follower contacts are very important owing to the difficulties faced during a reliable simulation due to the continuous variation of load, speed and geometry of the lubricated contact. Some experiments have been carried out with a new apparatus, specifically designed and realised for investigation on cam–follower and gear teeth contacts, in order to test its capability to measure film thickness and contact forces. Circular eccentric cams have been used because they feature lower transient effects and comparison of the results with the theoretical/numerical ones is easier. The tests have been performed using cams with two different eccentricities and surface roughness, and two different followers, one made of steel and one made of glass. The behaviour of the cam–follower contacts at several different rotational speeds, ranging from 50 to 500 r/min, and different pre-loads have been investigated. Lubrication regimes ranged from boundary to complete, with most of the tests being performed under mixed lubrication conditions. Localised wear has occurred during some tests. Data of all contact force and moment components as well as of the cam shaft driving torque have been acquired at high acquisition frequency. Some methodologies for numerical data elaboration have been identified. Optical interference images have been correctly recorded at the desired frequency. The trends of the normal and friction forces measured in the different tests as well as the evaluated trends of the friction coefficient are presented in the paper. Abstract

A correct prediction of scuffing failures is not easy. Several models have been developed by a number of authors but none can be applied with a certain degree of reliability under any conditions. In this work a simplified model for scuffing prediction is proposed. The model takes into account the presence of various lubrication regimes during the machine running. Experimental tests are being carried out in order to validate the model. The procedures used and the first results are presented. First experimental results agree with the numerical ones.
