Background & Aims: The association between dietary patterns and frailty is less investigated in Asia. We aimed to investigate the prospective associations between dietary patterns and frailty index (FI) in community-dwelling Japanese older adults aged 60 years or older., Methods: A 3-year cohort collected the data on sociodemographic information, lifestyle behaviors, comorbidities, medication history, depression status, nutrition, and physical function from 2014 to 2017. Five dietary patterns including "Mediterranean-style," "sugar and fat," "salt and pickles," "noodle and alcohol," and "protein-rich" dietary patterns were identified using principal component analysis from 20 food groups obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire. A 54-item FI was constructed on the basis of a deficit accumulation model. This project aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between dietary pattern and frailty trajectories with annual measurements over a 3-year period using a generalized estimating equation., Result: After excluding 108 participants with incomplete data at baseline, 666 participants (56.5% female, 69.4 ± 4.4 years) were included for longitudinal analysis. Our results demonstrated that adherence score to "sugar and fat" dietary pattern" (Q4 vs. Q1: mean difference [0.017], 95% CI [0.006 to 0.029]) and "salt and pickles" dietary pattern (Q3 vs. Q1: mean difference [0.010], 95% CI [0.001 to 0.020]; Q4 vs. Q1: mean difference [0.014], 95% CI [0.003 to 0.025]) were positively associated with change in FI. Adherence score to a "protein-rich" dietary pattern was negatively associated with change in FI (Q4 vs. Q1: mean difference [-0.013], 95% CI [-0.025 to -0.002])., Conclusions: "Salt and pickles" dietary pattern and "sugar and fat" dietary pattern were positively associated with frailty. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the combination of physical frailty and social isolation on falling in community-dwelling older adults., Design: A cross-sectional study of data obtained at registration in a randomized control trial., Setting: Community-based study of participants recruited from Toyota, Japan., Participants: 380 community-dwelling older adults (47.9% women, mean age = 72.3 ± 4.6 years)., Measurements: Participants were categorized as non-frail or pre-frail/frail based on the Fried frailty criteria (slowness, weakness, exhaustion, low activity, and weight loss). Social isolation was examined using the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6), and scores lower than 12 points indicated social isolation. Participants were divided into four groups depending on pre-frail/frail status and social isolation, and experiences of multiple falls over the past year were compared between the groups., Results: Participants were classified into robust (n = 193), physical frailty (PF; n = 108), social isolation (SI; n = 43), and PF with SI (PF+SI; n = 36) groups. A total of 38 (10.0%) participants reported multiple falls. Logistic regression analysis showed that PF and SI groups were not independently associated with falling (PF: OR 1.64, 95% CI 0.65-4.16, SI: OR 2.25, 95% CI 0.77-6.58), while PF+SI group was significantly associated with falling compared with the robust group (OR 3.06, 95% CI 1.00-9.34, p = 0.049) after controlling for confounding factors., Conclusion: Our findings support the assertion that coexistence with physical frailty and social isolation were associated with falling in the older adults., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest

Frailty has been established as a risk factor for falls, and prefrailty also seems a risk; however, few studies have focused on the association between falls and each of the five components of frailty proposed by Fried. In the present study, we sought to elucidate the association between prefrailty and falls, and moreover, the association of frailty component with falls. Participants were community-dwelling older people who had cognitive complaints but not dementia (N = 447, male 54.6%). Prefrailty was defined as exhibiting one or two of the five Fried criteria. Frail individuals were excluded. Background characteristics were compared between the prefrail and robust groups, and multiple regression analysis was performed to investigate the associations between fall history within the past year and factors that were significantly different between the groups. We also performed logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age, education and gender to assess associations with frailty components. We found that prefrailty was associated with fall history. Depressed mood was also significantly associated with fall history. Among the five frailty criteria, exhaustion was significantly associated with falls. Objective: Recognizing frailty, also known as clinical geriatric syndrome in the elderly that is characterized by high vulnerability and low resilience, and its extensive influence in clinical practice is challenging. This study aims to develop a social frailty prediction system based on machine learning approaches in order to identify the social frailty status of the elders in order to advance appropriate social services provision., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled and collected information from 595 community-dwelling seniors aged 65+. Fourteen predictors established from questionnaires and electronic medical records were used to predict the social frailty of participants. Bagged classification and regression trees, model average neural network, random forest, C5.0, eXtreme gradient boosting, and stochastic gradient boosting were used to build the predictive model in use. Performance was compared using accuracy, kappa, area under receiver operating characteristic curve, sensitivity, and specificity. The frailty predictive system was web-based and built upon representational state transfer application program interfaces., Results: C5.0 achieved the best overall performance than remaining learners, and was adopted as the base learner for the social frailty prediction system. In terms of the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), health literacy (AUC = 0.68) was found to be the most important variable for predicting one's social frailty, followed by comorbidity (AUC = 0.67), religious participation (AUC = 0.67), physical activity (AUC = 0.66), and geriatric depression score (AUC = 0.62)., Conclusions: Results suggest that a combination of such data that is both available and unavailable from electronic medical records is predictive of the social frailty of an elderly population., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. We surveyed the care burden of family caregivers, their satisfaction with the services, and whether their care burden was reduced by the introduction of the LTCI care services. We randomly enrolled 3000 of 43,250 residents of Nagoya City aged 65 and over who had been certified as requiring long-term care and who used at least one type of service provided by the public LTCI; 1835 (61.2%) subjects returned the survey. A total of 1015 subjects for whom complete sets of data were available were employed for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance for the continuous variables and χ(2) analysis for that categorical variance were performed. Multiple logistic analysis was performed with the factors with p values of <0.2 in the χ(2) analysis of burden reduction. A total of 68.8% of the caregivers indicated that the care burden was reduced by the introduction of the LTCI care services, and 86.8% of the caregivers were satisfied with the LTCI care services. A lower age of caregivers, a more advanced need classification level, and more satisfaction with the services were independently associated with a reduction of the care burden. One of the critical issues that Japan, well known for the world's highest proportion of older adults, a super-aged society, is currently confronting is how to prevent physical disability in old age. This issue is particularly important not only from a medical perspective such as functional prognoses but also from a socio-economic angle in view of reducing the rapid rise in the cost of medical and long-term care insurance services. Functional decline in old age results not only from acute diseases but also from frailty. Such a common and important syndrome that is increasingly prevalent with advancing age can be the cause. The present article intends to review what is known about frailty, including its definition, epidemiology, and pathophysiology, and to examine potential areas of future research.

The aim of the study was to examine the effect of informal care levels on overall discontinuation of living at home, all-cause death, hospital admission, and long-term care placement for community-dwelling older people using various community-based services during a 3-year period. Prospective cohort study of 1582 community-dwelling disabled elderly and paired informal caregivers was conducted. Baseline data included the recipients and caregivers' demographic characteristics, comorbidities, informal care levels (sufficient, moderate, and insufficient care), which were evaluated by trained visiting nurses, and the level of formal community-based service use. Among 1582 participants, 97 died at home, 692 were admitted to hospitals, 318 died during their hospital stay, and 117 were institutionalized in long-term care facilities during 3 years of follow-up. A multivariate Cox hazard model demonstrated that when compared with a sufficient informal care level, an insufficient informal care level was associated with overall discontinuation of living at home, all-cause mortality, hospitalization, and institutionalization during 3 years of follow-up (hazard ratio: 1.65, 95% confidence interval: 1.15-2.36; 1.98, 1.17-3.34; 1.56, 1.04-2.35; 2.93, 1.25-6.86, respectively). Aim: In our aging society, the number of community-dwelling dependent elderly people is increasing. Many studies have shown that depression influences the health of older persons. In the present study, we examined whether depressive status is associated with mortality and hospitalization in community-dwelling dependent older people during a 3-year follow-up period., Methods: This study was a prospective cohort analysis of 1,409 community-dwelling disabled elderly (489 men, 920 women; average age 80.1, the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly). Data included demographic characteristics, basic activities of daily living (ADL) scores, comorbidity, and depressive status as assessed by the short version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) at baseline. The participants were considered to have depression or severe depression if their GDS-15 score was 6-10 or above 10, respectively. The Cox proportional hazard model and the Kaplan-Meier method were used to assess any association with depressive status at baseline with mortality or hospitalization during a 3-year period., Results: During a 3-year observation, 284 participants died (53 at home, 231 at hospital), and 576 were admitted to hospitals. Univariate analysis revealed that the depressive status of participants was associated with mortality and hospitalization during a 3-year follow up. However, multivariate models used to adjust for potential confounders including gender, age, ADL status, and comorbidity, did not show any association between depressive status and mortality and hospitalization., Conclusions: Depressive status among community-dwelling disabled elderly was not associated with mortality or hospitalization in the present series.

Although anthropometric parameters have been extensively studied regarding their relationship to physical function status, the association between these parameters and the activity of daily living (ADL) function remains controversial. We investigated whether BMI or mid-upper arm circumference (AC) is an indication of variation in the physical functioning of the frail elderly. The present study was a prospective cohort analysis of 543 community-dwelling frail elderly. Data included the participants' demographic characteristics, basic ADL, comorbidity and anthropometric measurements at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. Logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between ADL status and anthropometric measurements during the study period. Among the 543 participants, 418 maintained or improved their ADL status, while 125 showed an ADL decline during the study period. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that BMI and AC levels or ADL status at baseline were not independent predictors of the loss of ADL function or the decline in these anthropometric measurements during the study period, respectively. However, the decline in BMI and AC levels and the loss of ADL function were associated with each other during the study period. There is an association between the negative changes in anthropometric measurements during the follow-up period and the decline in ADL function during a 2-year follow-up in community-dwelling frail elderly.

Objectives: To clarify the association between unmet medication management need and 3-year mortality and hospitalization for community-dwelling older people with various levels of disabilities., Design: Prospective cohort study (the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly)., Setting: Community-based., Participants: One thousand seven hundred seventy-two community-dwelling elderly subjects (611 men, 1,161 women)., Measurements: Data included the clients' demographic characteristics, a rating for basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADLs), number of prescribed medications and physician-diagnosed chronic diseases, medication adherence, ability to manage medication, and presence or absence of medication assistance. Cox proportional hazard models and the Kaplan-Meier method were used to assess the association between the medication management at baseline and mortality or hospitalization during a 3-year period., Results: Of 1,772 participants, 681 reported no difficulty with self-medication management, and 1,091 experienced difficulty with self-medication. Of participants with difficulty with self-medication management, 929 had medication assistance, and 162 did not. During a 3-year follow up, 424 participants died, and 758 were admitted to hospitals. The baseline data demonstrated that participants not receiving medication assistance were younger and had better ADL status and fewer comorbidities. Multivariate Cox regression models adjusting for potential confounders showed that the lack of assistance in those who needed medication assistance was associated with hospitalization but not mortality during the study period., Conclusion: In community-dwelling disabled elderly people, lack of medication assistance in those needing medication support was associated with higher risk of hospitalization.

Background: Because little attention has so far been paid to the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on caregiver burden in community settings, we sought to confirm the influence of DM on perceived caregiver burden among caregivers providing care to a home elderly person using data from the Nagoya Longitudinal Study of the Frail Elderly (NLS-FE)., Methods: The NLS-FE is a large prospective study of 1875 community-dwelling elderly. A total of 1592 pairs of dependents and caregivers were included in the analysis. The data we used in this study included the Japanese version of the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (J-ZBI), characteristics of caregivers and dependents, and caregiving situation. The pairs were sorted into one control and three DM groups: (i) no DM; (ii) DM taking no medications; (iii) DM taking oral medication only; and (iv) DM taking insulin. The differences in dependent and caregiver characteristics among the groups were assessed., Results: Two hundred and twenty-eight dependents from the NLS-FE study had DM. Of these, 25% took no medication to treat it, 55% took oral medications only, and 20% used insulin. No statistical differences were found in age, gender or kinship among caregivers. No differences were found among the DM categories in levels of caregiver burden according to the J-ZBI, before and after adjusting for these baseline variables., Conclusions: Among the community-dwelling frail elderly, DM is not an independent predictor of caregiver burden.

Background & Aims: Although it is not uncommon for there to be frail older people living in the community, who do not know their weight and/or height, the health-related outcomes of those older remains unknown. We examined whether missing these anthropometries are a predictor of mortality or hospitalization during a 2-year follow-up period in community-dwelling older people using various community-based services., Methods: This study was a prospective cohort analysis of 952 community-dwelling elderly. Data included the clients' demographic characteristics, basic activities of daily living (ADL), comorbidity, and anthropometric measurements at baseline. Analysis of mortality and hospitalization over the 2-year period was conducted using multivariate Cox proportional hazards models., Results: Among the 952 participants, 342 and 292 had missing data for height and weight at baseline, respectively. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for potential confounders showed that the lack of data on weight was associated with 2-year mortality (hazard ratio, HR:1.54, 96% CI:1.09-1.79) as well as hospitalization (HR:1.34, 95% CI:1.01-1.79) during the 2-year follow-up, although the lack of height measurement was not associated with these adverse outcomes., Conclusions: Older people living in the community with unavailable weight data appear to be more likely to have a high risk of mortality and hospitalization.

Background & Aims: It remains controversial whether mid-arm anthropometric measurements (MAAMs) are reflected with physical impairment or useful predictors of mortality in the frail elderly. We examined the following hypotheses: (1) MAAMs in frail community-dwelling elderly are lower than those of independent elderly, (2) the lower MAAMs are associated with physical function impairment, and (3) are independent predictors of 2-year mortality., Methods: This study was composed of cross-sectional and prospective cohort analyses of 957 community-dwelling elderly. Data included the clients' demographic characteristics, comorbidity, activities of daily living (ADL), and MAAMs at baseline. The mean scores of MAAMs of participants were compared with Japanese Anthropometric Reference Data. Survival analysis of 2-year mortality was conducted using multivariate Cox proportional hazards models., Results: Significantly lower arm muscle area (AMA) and higher triceps skinfold (TSF) levels were observed in most of the age groups of the study participants than those of the standard Japanese population. ADL function was correlated with AMA but not with TSF, both of which were independent risk factors for 2-year mortality in the participants (highest tertile versus lowest, AMA, HR:2.03, 95%CI:1.36-3.02; TSF, HR:1.89, 95%CI:1.30-2.75)., Conclusions: AMA and TSF were independent risk factors for 2-year mortality in the community-dwelling frail elderly.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between anthropometric measurements and mortality among community-dwelling frail elderly., Methods: This study was a prospective cohort analysis of 520 community-dwelling elderly registered in the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly (NLS-FE). Data included the participants' demographic characteristics, body mass index (BMI), mid-arm circumference (MAC), triceps skinfold (TSF), and arm muscle area (AMA), basic activities of daily living, comorbidity. BMI and TSF values were categorized into three groups, respectively, according to above the 75th percentile, the 25-75th percentile, and below the 25th percentile of Japanese Anthropometric Reference Data (JARD 2001). Survival analysis of 21-month mortality was conducted using Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models., Results: BMI and TSF were independent risk factors for 21-month mortality in the study participants. Significant higher risk of 21-month mortality was observed in participants below the 75th percentile of BMI or below the 25th percentile of TSF set in JARD 2001. A striking increase in the risk of 21-month mortality, adjusting for potential confounding factors, was observed in the below 75th percentile of the BMI group with a below 25th percentile TSF of JARD 2001, compared with the 75th or above percentile BMI group with the 25th or above percentile TSF., Conclusion: The combination of BMI and TSF is a predictor of 21-month mortality among older people with ADL dysfunction.

Objectives: To clarify the association between day care service use and 21-month mortality in community-dwelling frail older people., Design: Prospective cohort study (the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly)., Setting: Community-based., Participants: One thousand six hundred seventy-three community-dwelling older people (540 men, 1,133 women)., Measurements: Data included the clients' demographic characteristics; depression as assessed using the short version of the Geriatric Depression Scale; a rating for basic activities of daily living (ADLs); comorbidity; number of prescribed medications and physician-diagnosed chronic diseases; use of home-care services, including day care, visiting nurse, and home-help services; and number of regular medical checkups. Survival analysis of 21-month mortality was conducted using Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models., Results: Of the 1,673 participants, 726 were day care service users at baseline, and 268 (94 day care service users, 174 nonusers) died during the 21-month follow-up. Multivariate Cox regression models adjusting for potential confounders showed that day care service use was associated with reduction in mortality. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that day care service use was associated with less risk of mortality in subjects who were female; were in the youngest age group (65-74); had higher ADL scores, lower comorbidity, depression, no dementia; and used a visiting nurse service. Participants using day care service two and three times or more a week had 63% or 44% lower relative hazard ratios, respectively, than participants not using the service., Conclusion: Among community-dwelling frail older people, day care service use two or more times per week was associated with 44% to 63% lower 21-month mortality.

Aim: We examined the prevalence of depression and identified the factors associated with depression among community-dwelling Japanese frail elderly eligible for long-term care insurance., Methods: A cross-sectional study of the baseline data of 1,409 elderly from the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly was conducted. The data, which were collected at the patients' homes or from care-managing center records, included the clients' demographic characteristics, care levels, depression as assessed by the short version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), a rating for basic activities of daily living (ADL), prescribing medications, and physician-diagnosed chronic diseases. The participants were considered to be in depression or severe depression if their GDS-15 score was 6 < or = or 10 < or =, respectively., Results: Although 57.2% or 23.1% of the participants had a GDS-15 score of 6 or higher, or 10 or higher, only 4.2% of sever depressive participants were taking an antidepressant. The higher prevalence of depression was associated with a higher care level in the long-term care insurance program. The depression was associated with 3 or more eligible care level, poor nutritional status, 3 or more prescribed medications, and nonuse of day-care/service., Conclusion: We observed a high prevalence of depression among community-dwelling Japanese frail elderly eligible for long-term care insurance. However, very few depressed elderly were taking an antidepressant.

Objectives: To test the following hypotheses: (1) the rate of polypharmacy, defined as six or more prescribing medications, is lower in the oldest old (> or =85) than in younger older people (65-84); (2) beneficial medication use is lower in the oldest old; (3) the underuse of these medications in the oldest old is associated with physical or cognitive impairment or comorbid conditions., Design: A cross-sectional study of the baseline data from the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly., Setting: Community-based., Participants: One thousand eight hundred seventy-five community-dwelling older people (632 men, 1,243 women)., Measurements: The data, which were collected at the patients' homes or from care-managing center records, included the clients' demographic characteristics, depression status as assessed using the short version of the Geriatric Depression Scale, a rating for basic activities of daily living (ADLs), prescribed medications, and physician-diagnosed chronic diseases., Results: The oldest old had less polypharmacy even after controlling for ADLs and comorbid conditions. The underuse of beneficial medications for the oldest old was observed after adjusting for ADLs, cognitive impairment, comorbid conditions, antithrombotic agents for subjects with a history of cardiovascular diseases, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for those with dementia, and antidepressants for those with depression. However, being aged 85 and older was not associated with the underuse of hypoglycemic and antihypertensive agents by those with diabetes mellitus and hypertension, respectively., Conclusion: Among community-dwelling frail older people, the rate of polypharmacy is lower in the oldest members than in the younger ones. The underuse of prescribed medications for chronic diseases/conditions of frail older people is common but not for all conditions.

Background: Although oldest-old, those aged 85 years and older, patients are the fastest growing segment, clinical evidences regarding the acute care of oldest-old patients are still lacking. Because acute medical conditions requiring emergent hospitalization is frequently followed by high rate of progressive physical decline and increased mortality after discharge in oldest-old patients, prognostic information collected during hospitalization can provide the basis for discussion about the goals of care and therapy. The aim of our study was to identify predictive factors for postdischarge mortality in oldest-old patients., Methods: The study included 403 oldest-old patients discharged from the acute care setting of a general hospital, who were followed-up for 1 year. Predictive values of the patients' characteristics collected during their hospitalization for 1-year mortality were identified utilizing Cox proportional hazard regression analysis., Results: During 1-year follow-up, 104 patients (25.8%) died. The variables independently associated with 1-year mortality in multivariate analysis were the Charlson Comorbidity Index equal or greater than 2 [HR (hazard ratio) 4.71, 95%CI (confidence interval) 1.09-20.42], six or more prescribed medications at discharge (HR 3.12, 95% CI 1.39-6.99), benzodiazepines use (HR 1.64, 95% CI 1.04-2.60), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs use (HR 1.70, 95% CI 1.10-2.63), albumin less than or equaling 3.4 g/dl (HR 2.16, 95% CI 1.13-4.14), hemoglobin 10-12 g/dl (HR 2.32, 95% CI 1.22-3.56), hemoglobin less than 10 g/dl (HR 2.67, 95% CI 1.43-4.95), the presence of pressure sores (HR 1.84, 95% CI 1.14-2.97), and a history of delirium (HR 2.24, 95% CI 1.32-3.79). Functional impairment assessed by the Katz Index was only weakly associated with mortality (HR 1.24, 95% CI 0.53-2.91)., Conclusion: Although often underappreciated, polypharmacy, particular medication use, anemia, the presence of pressure sores, and a history of delirium were important predictors for postdischarge mortality in oldest-old patients., (Copyright 2006 S. Objective: We evaluated the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) test and the short-form MNA as screening tools for malnutrition in the Japanese elderly population., Methods: A cross-sectional study of 226 elderly Japanese patients (78.6 +/- 0.5 y of age, mean +/- standard deviation; 67 men and 159 women) in various settings was carried out. Nutritional assessment included MNA, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical markers., Results: According to the original cutoff point of the full MNA, 19.9% of those assessed were malnourished, 58.0% were at risk of malnutrition, and 22.1% were well nourished. Significant correlations were found between full MNA scores and age (r = -0.14), body mass index (r = 0.59), serum albumin (r = 0.60), total cholesterol (r = 0.36), midarm circumference (r = 0.50), and triceps skinfold (r = 0.37). The sensitivity and specificity of the full MNA score (< 17) for hypoalbuminemia were 0.810 and 0.860, respectively. With a cutoff point lower than 18, sensitivity and specificity hypoalbuminemia were 0.857 and 0.815, respectively. Using a short-form MNA score 12 and higher as normal, its sensitivity and specificity for predicting undernutrition were 0.859 and 0.840, respectively., Conclusions: The full and short forms of the MNA were useful tools to identify elderly Japanese patients with malnutrition or risk of malnutrition. However, the full MNA cutoff point for malnutrition should be modulated for this population.

Objectives: A number of studies have reported that frailty is cross-sectionally associated with cognitive decline and is also a risk for future cognitive decline or dementia; however, there have been only a few studies that focus on the association between prefrailty and cognitive dysfunction. In the current study, we investigated the association between prefrailty and cognitionDesign: A cross-sectional study of the data obtained at registration in a randomized control trial.Setting: Toyota, Japan.Participants: Community-dwelling older subjects (male 54.6%) who had cognitive complaints.Measurements: A battery of neuropsychological and physical assessments were performed. Prefrailty was defined as exhibiting one or two of the five Fried criteria (weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slow gait speed and low physical activity). We performed a multiple regression analysis to investigate the associations of cognitive performance with prefrailty, adjusting for the factors that were significantly different between the robust and prefrailty groups. To assess the cognitive attributes that were significantly associated with prefrailty, logistic analysis was performed to see if one specific criterion of the five frailty criteria was associated with cognitive performance.Results: The study subjects included 183 prefrail and 264 robust individuals. The prefrail subjects with cognitive complaints were older, less educated, more depressive, and more likely to have diabetes mellitus than the robust subjects. The prefrail subjects had lower performance in a wide-range of cognitive domains, and after adjustments for age, education, depressive mood, and diabetes mellitus, prefrailty was associated with a decline in delayed memory and processing speed. Among the components of the Fried criteria, slow gait speed and loss of activity were significantly associated with slow processing speed as assessed by the digit symbol substitution test.Conclusion: The current results demonstrated that prefrailty was associated with worse memory and processing speed performance, but not with other cognitive domains.
