Abstract

The gravitational coupling between large- and small-scale density perturbations leads to anisotropic distortions to the local small-scale matter fluctuations. Such local anisotropic distortions can be used to reconstruct the large-scale matter distribution, known as tidal reconstruction. In this paper, we apply the tidal reconstruction methods to simulated galaxies in redshift space. We find that redshift-space distortions lead to anisotropic reconstruction results. While the reconstructed radial modes are more noisy mainly due to the small-scale velocity dispersion, the transverse modes are still reconstructed with high fidelity, well correlated with the original large-scale density modes. The bias of the reconstructed field at large scales shows a simple angular dependence which can be described by a form similar to the linear redshift-space distortion. The noise power spectrum is nearly isotropic and scale-independent on large scales. This makes the reconstructed tides field an ideal tracer for cosmic variance cancellation and multi-tracer analysis and has profound implications for future 21~cm intensity mapping surveys., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We present the optimal convergence and shear estimators for lensing reconstruction from the cosmic microwave background temperature field. This generalizes the deflection estimator, is sensitive to non-lensing modes, provides internal consistency checks, and is always at least as optimal. Previously, these estimators were only known in the squeezed limit. This paper decomposes convergence and shear fields into cosine and sine waves and the lensed correlation function is then Taylor expanded in the wave amplitudes. Maximizing the likelihood function gives the optimal estimators for the convergence and shear fields. This method has the potential to improve the lensing reconstruction of the cosmic microwave background polarization field: the shear and convergence can be optimally combined to form a deflection estimator, or used separately to separate non-lensing modes, or utilize lensing of non-Gaussian secondary foregrounds., 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Despite two decades of tremendous experimental and theoretical progress, the riddle of the accelerated expansion of the Universe remains to be solved. On the experimental side, our understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the major dark energy probes has evolved; here we summarize the major probes and their crucial challenges. On the theoretical side, the taxonomy of explanations for the accelerated expansion rate is better understood, providing clear guidance to the relevant observables. We argue that: i) improving statistical precision and systematic control by taking more data, supporting research efforts to address crucial challenges for each probe, using complementary methods, and relying on cross-correlations is well motivated; ii) blinding of analyses is difficult but ever more important; iii) studies of dark energy and modified gravity are related; and iv) it is crucial that R&D for a vibrant dark energy program in the 2030s be started now by supporting studies and technical R&D that will allow embryonic proposals to mature. Understanding dark energy, arguably the biggest unsolved mystery in both fundamental particle physics and cosmology, will remain one of the focal points of cosmology in the forthcoming decade., 5 pages + references; science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 decadal survey

Abstract

The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $��(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Simultaneously, it can measure the fraction of Dark Energy at the percent level up to $z = 5$, thus serving as an unprecedented test of the standard model and opening up a tremendous discovery space., Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

5. The Cross-correlation of KSZ Effect and 21 cm Intensity Mapping with Tidal Reconstruction

Abstract

We discuss the possibility of studying diffuse baryon distributions with kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect by correlating cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations with density fluctuations from 21\,cm intensity mapping (IM). The biggest challenge for the cross-correlation is the loss of large-scale information in IM, due to foregrounds and the zero spacing problem of interferometers. We apply the tidal reconstruction algorithm to restore the lost large-scale modes, which increases the correlation by more than a factor of three. With the predicted foreground level, we expect a $\sim20\,\sigma$ detection of kSZ signal for $0.8\lesssim z\lesssim2.5$ with CHIME and Planck, and a $\sim40\, \sigma$ detection with HIRAX and Planck. Abstract

We present a new method to reconstruct the primordial (linear) density field using the estimated nonlinear displacement field. The divergence of the displacement field gives the reconstructed density field. We solve the nonlinear displacement field in the 1D cosmology and show the reconstruction results. The new reconstruction algorithm recovers a lot of linear modes and reduces the nonlinear damping scale significantly. The successful 1D reconstruction results imply the new algorithm should also be a promising technique in the 3D case., 5 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Measurements of neutrino mass in cosmological observations rely on two point statistics that are hindered by significant degeneracies with the optical depth and galaxy bias. The relative velocity effect between cold dark matter and neutrinos induces a large scale dipole into the matter density field and may be able to provide orthogonal constraints to standard techniques. We numerically investigate this dipole in the TianNu Simulation, which contains cold dark matter and 50 meV neutrinos. We first compute the dipole using a new linear response technique where we treat the displacement caused by the relative velocity as a phase in Fourier space and then integrate the matter power spectrum over redshift. Then, we compute the dipole numerically in real space using the simulation density and velocity fields. We find excellent agreement between the linear response and N-body methods. Utilizing the dipole as an observational tool will require two tracers of the matter distribution that are differently biased with respect to the neutrino density., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures
