Abstract

The origin of current angular momentum (AM) of the black hole (BH) in X-ray binary (XRB) is still unclear, which is related with the birth and/or the growth of the BH. Here we collect the spin parameters $a_{*}$ measured in BH XRBs and find an apparent bimodal distribution centered at $\sim$ 0.17 and 0.83. We find a positive relation between the spin parameter and the orbital period/orbital separation through combining distinct XRB categories, including neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) BH XRBs and wind-fed BH XRBs. It seems that the AM of the compact star and the binary orbit correlates by combining the different XRB systems. These positive relations imply that accretion process is a common mechanism for spinning up the compact star in these diverse XRB systems. We infer that the low and high spin BH XRBs may experience different evolution and accretion history, which corresponds to the bimodal distribution of the BH spin parameters. The low spin BHs ($a_{*}0.5$) had experienced a short hypercritical accretion ($\gg \dot{M}_\mathrm{Edd}$) period, during which, the BH spin dramatically increased., 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Abstract

SKA's large field of view and high sensitivity at low frequencies will provide almost a complete coverage of the very early rising phase of extragalactic and Galactic transients which undergo a flare or outburst due to an abrupt accretion onto either supermassive (such as tidal disruption events, TDEs) or stellar mass black hole transients (such as black hole LMXB) , when their broadband emission is supposed to be jet-dominated at low luminosities, allowing SKA to be the first facility to make source discoveries and to send out alerts for follow-up ground or space observations as compared with the sensitivity of future X-ray wide-field-view monitoring. On the other hand, due to extremely large rate-of-change in the mass accretion rate during the rising phase of TDE flares or transient outbursts, SKA will be able to cover an extremely large range of the mass accretion rate as well as its rate-of-change not accessible with observations in persistent black hole systems, which will shape our understanding of disk-jet coupling in accreting black holes in the non-stationary accretion regimes., Comment: To be published in: "Advancing Astrophysics with the Square Kilometre Array", Proceedings of Science, PoS(AASKA14)

Abstract

The black hole X-ray transient GX 339$-$4 was observed with the {\it Swift} satellite across the hard-to-soft state transition during its 2010 outburst. The ultraviolet (UV) flux measured with the filter UVW2 of the {\it Swift}/UVOT started to decrease nearly 10 days before the drop in the hard X-ray flux when the hard-to-soft state transition started. The UV flux $F_\mathrm{UV}$ correlated with the X-ray flux $F_\mathrm{X}$ as $F_\mathrm{UV}\propto F_\mathrm{X}^{0.50\pm0.04}$ before the drop in the UV flux. During the UV drop lasting about 16 days, the X-ray flux in 0.4--10 keV was increasing. The drop in the UV flux indicates that the jet started to quench 10 days before the hard-to-soft state transition seen in X-rays, which is unexpected., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

Abstract

Observations made using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer have shown that accreting weak-field neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binary systems (LMXBs) produce three distinct types of millisecond X-ray oscillations that can be used to determine the spin rates and estimate the magnetic fields of these stars. These oscillations show that more than two dozen neutron stars in LMXBs have spin rates and magnetic fields in the range that will make them radio-emitting millisecond pulsars when accretion ceases, supporting the hypothesis that neutron stars in LMXBs are the progenitors of the rotation-powered millisecond pulsars. The spins of the 16 known accreting millisecond pulsars in LMXBs are consistent with spin-up to accretion spin equilibrium for magnetic fields ranging from 3 x 10^7 G to 3 x 10^8 G and time-averaged accretion rates ranging from 3 x 10^{-3} MdotE to MdotE, provided these stars have been accreting long enough. The P-Pdot distribution of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars indicates that their initial spins are set by spin-up to spin equilibrium at accretion rates ranging from 10^{-3} MdotE to MdotE or that they never reached accretion spin equilibrium., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Binary Radio Pulsars, eds. 6. Kilohertz QPO Frequency Anti-Correlated with mHz QPO Flux in 4U 1608-52

Abstract

We analysed {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} (RXTE) data of the low-mass X-ray binary and atoll source 4U 1608-52 obtained on March 3, 1996 in which the source simultaneously showed a strong single kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) around 840 Hz, and a 7.5 mHz QPO detected at energies below 5 keV. We find that the frequency of the kHz QPO is approximately anti-correlated with the 2--5 keV X-ray count rate associated with the mHz QPO. The average kHz QPO frequency varies by about 0.6 Hz (0.07%) during a mHz QPO cycle over which the average 2--5 keV count rate varies by about 60 c/s (4%). This is opposite to the frequency-count rate correlation observed in the same data on longer time scales and hence constitutes the first example of a sign reversal in the frequency-flux correlation related to the origin of the flux. Such a sign reversal is predicted by the radiative disk truncation model for the case where the flux variations originate on the neutron star but are not due to disk accretion rate fluctuations. The results support the nuclear burning interpretation of the mHz QPO, and the interpretation of the kHz QPO frequency as an indicator of the orbital frequency at the inner edge of the accretion disk. The varying radiative stresses on the inner disk exerted by the flux due to the quasi-periodic nuclear burning lead to changes in the inner disk radius and hence to the observed anti-correlation between kHz QPO frequency and X-ray count rate. There is a time lag of about ten seconds of the X-ray count rate relative to the kHz QPO frequency in terms of the anti-correlation we found between these two quantities, which could be caused by the propagation of the nuclear burning front on the neutron star away from the equatorial region., 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

7. Dependence of kHz QPO Properties on Normal-Branch Oscillation Phase in Scorpius X-1

Abstract

We analysed RXTE data of Sco X-1 which show kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and the $\sim$6--8 Hz normal-branch oscillation (NBO) simultaneously. Using power spectra of 0.03--0.5 s data segments, we find that both the upper kHz QPO frequency $\nu_2$ and the ratio of lower to upper kHz QPO amplitude are anticorrelated to variations in the X-ray count-rate taking place on the NBO time scale. The frequency dependence is similar to (but probably weaker than) that found on longer time scales, but the power ratio dependence is opposite to it. A model where radiative stresses on the disk material, modulated at the NBO frequency, lead to changes in $\nu_2$ can explain the data; this implies some of the NBO flux changes originate from inside the inner disk radius. We discuss how these findings affect our understanding of kHz QPOs and of the low-frequency variability of low-mass X-ray binaries., Comment: 13 pages including 3 figures, accepted for publlication in ApJ Letters

Abstract

We have investigated the bimodal distribution of the duration of BATSE gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by analyzing light curves of 64 ms time resolution. We define the average pulse width of GRBs from the auto-correlation function of GRB profiles. The distribution of the average pulse width of GRBs is bimodal, suggesting that GRBs are composed of long-pulse GRBs and short-pulse GRBs. The average pulse width of long-pulse GRBs appears correlated with the peak flux, consistent with the time dilation effect anticipated from the cosmological origin of GRBs. However, the correlation between the average pulse width and the peak flux for the short-pulse GRBs doesn't show such a tendency, which needs further study with higher time resolution data., 4 pages including 3 figures, poster paper of the 19th Texas Symposium in Paris

9. Similar Shot Noise in Cyg X-1, GRO J0422+32 and 1E 1724-3045

Abstract

We study the rapid variability in Cyg X-1 observed with the Rossi Timing Explorer (RXTE) on Jan 17 and 20 of 1997. The power spectra below 200 Hz can be characterized by two ``shot noise'' components and a peaked-noise centered at 0.2 Hz. This is similar to those ``shot noise'' observed in another black hole candidate GRO J0422+32 and a neutron star X-ray binary 1E 1724-3045. The similarity suggests that the generation mechanism of ``shot noise'' and peaked-noise is probably similar in both black hole systems and neutron star systems, and in both high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBS) and low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We have also analyzed ~ 500 brightest shots selected from the Cyg X-1 light curves. The time scale of the spectral variation around the shot can be as long as ~ a few seconds, consistent with Ginga results. The difference between the superposed shot profile in different energy bands can be attributed to the time lag and the different shot width between different energy bands. 10. Kilohertz QPO Frequency and Flux Decrease in AQL X-1 and Effect of Soft X-ray Spectral Components

Abstract

We report on an RXTE/PCA observation of Aql X-1 during its outburst in March 1997 in which, immediately following a Type-I burst, the broad-band 2-10 keV flux decreased by about 10% and the kilohertz QPO frequency decreased from 813+-3 Hz to 776+-4 Hz. This change in kHz QPO frequency is much larger than expected from a simple extrapolation of a frequency-flux correlation established using data before the burst. Meanwhile a very low frequency noise (VLFN) component in the broad-band FFT power spectra with a fractional root-mean-square (rms) amplitude of 1.2% before the burst ceased to exist after the burst. All these changes were accompanied by a change in the energy spectral shape. If we characterize the energy spectra with a model composed of two blackbody (BB) components and a power law component, almost all the decrease in flux was in the two BB components. We attribute the two BB components to the contributions from a region very near the neutron star or even the neutron star itself and from the accretion disk, respectively., Comment: 12 pages with 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, typos corrected and references updated

Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci.
