Gamma decays were observed in $^{56}$Ca and $^{58}$Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from $^{57,59}$Sc beams at $\approx 200$ MeV/nucleon. For $^{56}$Ca, a $\gamma$ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for $^{58}$Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^+_{gs}$ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $2^+_1$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the $N$ = 34 shell. Its constituents, the $0f_{5/2}$ and $0g_{9/2}$ orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic $^{60}$Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to $^{70}$Ca or even beyond., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

[Background] Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photo-response of atomic nuclei. [Purpose] We determine the photoresponse of $^{66}$Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the "elastic" decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. [Methods] Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were performed using a linearly-polarized quasi-monoenergetic photon beam at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source. Photon beam energies from 5.6 to 9.9 MeV with an energy spread of about 3% were selected in steps of 200-300 keV. Two High Purity Germanium detectors were used for the subsequent $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. [Results] Full photoabsorption cross sections are extracted from the data making use of the monoenergetic character of the photon beam. For the ground-state decay channel, the average contribution of electric and magnetic dipole strengths is disentangled. The average branching ratio back to the ground state is determined as well. [Conclusions] The new results indicate lower cross sections when compared to the values extracted from a former experiment using bremsstrahlung on $^{66}$Zn. In the latter, the average branching ratio to the ground state is estimated from statistical-model calculations in order to analyze the data. Corresponding estimates from statistical-model calculations underestimate this branching ratio compared to the values extracted from the present analysis, which would partly explain the high cross sections determined from the bremsstrahlung data.

International audience; Photo-nuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $A=60$ are studied experimentally and theoretically by the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual-photon excitation by proton scattering and real-photo absorption by a high-brilliance gamma-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photo-absorption cross sections and the decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field type models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photo-nuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated from the discrepancies between the model predictions and the experimental data. The data and the predictions will be implemented in a general reaction calculation code TALYS . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

International audience; A first γ-ray study of Cl47,49 spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with Ar50 projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt deexcitation γ rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction Ar50(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of Cl49 from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity Jπ=3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of Cl49, similar to the recently studied N=32 isotope K51. The evolution of the energy difference E(1/21+)−E(3/21+) is compared to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions.

5 pags., 4 figs., 1 tab., Neutron-rich nuclei in the vicinity of the $N=40$ island of inversion are characterized by shell evolution and exhibit deformed ground states. In several nuclei isomeric states have been observed and attributed to excitations to the intruder neutron $1g_{9/2}$ orbital. In the present study we searched for isomeric states in nuclei around $N=40$, $Z=22$ produced by projectile fragmentation at RIBF. Delayed $\gamma$ rays were detected by the EURICA germanium detector array. High statistics data allowed for an updated decay scheme of $^{60}$V. The lifetime of an isomeric state in $^{64}$V was measured for the first time in the present experiment. A previously unobserved isomeric state was discovered in $^{58}$Sc. The measured lifetime suggests a parity changing transition, originating from an odd number of neutrons in the $1g_{9/2}$ orbital. The nature of the isomeric state in $^{58}$Sc is thus different from isomers in the less exotic V and Sc nuclei., This experiment was carried out at the RIBF operated by RIKEN Nishina Center, RIKEN, and CNS, University of Tokyo. Background: The evolution of shell structure around doubly magic exotic nuclei is of great interest in nuclear physics and astrophysics. In the `southwest' region of $^{78}$Ni, the development of deformation might trigger a major shift in our understanding of explosive nucleosynthesis. To this end, new spectroscopic information on key close-lying nuclei is very valuable. Purpose: We intend to measure the isomeric and $��$ decay of $^{75}$Co, with one-proton and two-neutron holes relative to $^{78}$Ni, to access new nuclear structure information in $^{75}$Co and its $��$-decay daughters $^{75}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni. Methods: The nucleus $^{75}$Co is produced in relativistic in-flight fission reactions of $^{238}$U at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory in the RIKEN Nishina Center. Its isomeric and $��$ decay are studied exploiting the BigRIPS and EURICA setups. Results: We obtain partial $��$-decay spectra for $^{75}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni, and report a new isomeric transition in $^{75}$Co. The energy [$E_��=1914(2)$ keV] and half-life [$t_{1/2}=13(6)$ $��$s] of the delayed $��$ ray lend support for the existence of a $J^��=(1/2^-)$ isomeric state at 1914(2) keV. A comparison with PFSDG-U shell-model calculations provides a good account for the observed states in $^{75}$Ni, but the first calculated $1/2^-$ level in $^{75}$Co, a prolate $K=1/2$ state, is predicted about 1 MeV below the observed $(1/2^-)$ level. Conclusions: The spherical-like structure of the lowest-lying excited states in $^{75}$Ni is proved. In the case of $^{75}$Co, the results suggest that the dominance of the spherical configurations over the deformed ones might be stronger than expected below $^{78}$Ni. Inelastic proton scattering experiments were performed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, with a 295 MeV beam covering laboratory angles 0{\deg}-6{\deg} and excitation energies 6-22 MeV. Cross sections due to E1 and M1 excitations were extracted with a multipole decomposition analysis and then converted to reduced transition probabilities with the "virtual photon method" for E1 and the "unit cross section method" for M1 excitations, respectively. Including a theory-aided correction for the high excitation energy region not covered experimentally, the electric dipole polarizability was determined from the E1 strength distributions. Total photoabsorption cross sections derived from the E1 and M1 strength distributions show significant differences compared to those from previous ($\gamma$,xn) experiments in the energy region of the isocvector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR). The widths of the IVGDR deduced from the present data with a Lorentz parameterization show an approximately constant value of about 4.5 MeV in contrast to the large variations between isotopes observed in previous work. The IVGDR centroid energies are in good correspondence to expectations from systematics of their mass dependence. Furthermore, a study of the dependence of the IVGDR energies on bulk matter properties is presented. The E1 strengths below neutron threshold show fair agreement with results from ($\gamma$,$\gamma$') experiments on 112,116,120,124Sn in the energy region between 6 and 7 MeV. At higher excitation energies large differences are observed pointing to a different nature of the excited states with small ground state branching ratios. The isovector spin-M1 strengths exhibit a broad distribution between 6 and 12 MeV in all studied nuclei., Comment: 32 pages, 23 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. C

The form factor of the electromagnetic excitation of $^{12}$C to its 2$^+_1$ state was measured at extremely low momentum transfers in an electron scattering experiment at the S-DALINAC. A combined analysis with the world form factor data results in a reduced transition strength $B(E2; 2^+_1\rightarrow 0^+_1) =7.63(19)$ e$^2$fm$^4$ with an accuracy improved to 2.5\%. In-Medium-No Core Shell Model results with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory are capable to reproduce the result. A quadrupole moment $Q(2^+_1) = 5.97(30)$ efm$^2$ can be extracted from the strict correlation with the $B((E2)$ strength emerging in the calculations., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Low-lying excited states in the $N=32$ isotope $^{50}$Ar were investigated by in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multi-nucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3$^-$ state. The level scheme built using $\gamma\gamma$ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the $sd-pf$ model space, and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to $2^+$ states, while the previously proposed $4^+$ state could also correspond to a $2^+$ state., Comment: Accepted for Phys. Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < \theta_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb. It was found that the monopole strength in ${}^{12}$C exhausts $52 \pm 3^\text{(stat.)} \pm 8 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous $\alpha$-scattering experiments. The monopole strength in ${}^{93}$Nb exhausts $92 \pm 4^\text{(stat.)} \pm 10 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of $A\approx90$. Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed., Comment: 6 Figures

The exact nature of the lowest $K^��=2_��^+$ rotational bands in all deformed nuclei remains obscure. Traditionally they are assumed to be collective vibrations of the nuclear shape in the $��$ degree of freedom perpendicular to the nuclear symmetry axis. Very few such $��$-bands have been traced past the usual back-bending rotational alignments of high-j nucleons. We have investigated the structure of positive-parity bands in the N=90 nucleus 156Dy, using the 148Nd(12C,4n)156Dy reaction at 65 MeV, observing the resulting $��$-ray transitions with the Gammasphere array. The even- and odd-spin members of the $K^��=2_��^+$ $��$-band are observed to 32+ and 31+ respectively. This rotational band faithfully tracks the ground-state configuration to the highest spins. The members of a possible $��$-vibration built on the aligned yrast S-band are observed to spins 28+ and 27+. An even-spin positive-parity band, observed to spin 24+, is a candidate for an aligned S-band built on the seniority-zero configuration of the $0_2^+$ state at 676 keV. The crossing of this band with the $0_2^+$ band is at $\hbar��$= 0.28(1) MeV and is consistent with the configuration of the $0_2^+$ band not producing any blocking of the monopole pairing., Published in Physics Review C

International audience; The lifetimes of the $ 2^+_1$ , the $ 2^+_2$ and the $ 3^-_1$ states of$^{210}$Po have been measured in the$^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the $ 2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast $ 2^+_1$ , $ 4^+_1$ , $ 6^+_1$ , and $ 8^+_1$ states of$^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

The low-lying $M1$-strength of the open-shell nucleus $^{50}$Cr has been studied with the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence up to 9.7 MeV, using bremsstrahlung at the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator S-DALINAC and Compton backscattered photons at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility between 6 and 9.7 MeV of the initial photon energy. Fifteen $1^{+}$ states have been observed between 3.6 and 9.7 MeV. Following our analysis, the lowest $1^{+}$ state at 3.6 MeV can be considered as an isovector orbital mode with some spin admixture. The obtained results generally match the estimations and trends typical for the scissors-like mode. Detailed calculations within the Skyrme Quasiparticle Random-Phase-Approximation method and the Large-Scale Shell Model justify our conclusions. The calculated distributions of the orbital current for the lowest $1^{+}$-state suggest the schematic view of Lipparini and Stringari (isovector rotation-like oscillations inside the rigid surface) rather than the scissors-like picture of Lo Iudice and Palumbo. The spin M1 resonance is shown to be mainly generated by spin-flip transitions between the orbitals of the $fp$-shell., Comment: Accepted in PRC as a regular article

Background: Two-phonon excitations originating from the coupling of two collective one-phonon states are of great interest in nuclear structure physics. One possibility to generate low-lying $E1$ excitations is the coupling of quadrupole and octupole phonons. Purpose: In this work, the $\gamma$-decay behavior of candidates for the $(2_1^+\otimes 3_1^-)_{1^-}$ state in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{40}$Ca and in the heavier and semi-magic nucleus $^{140}$Ce is investigated. Methods: $(\vec{\gamma},\gamma')$ experiments have been carried out at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI${\gamma}$S) facility in combination with the high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy setup $\gamma^3$ consisting of HPGe and LaBr$_3$ detectors. The setup enables the acquisition of $\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidence data and, hence, the detection of direct decay paths. Results: In addition to the known ground-state decays, for $^{40}$Ca the decay into the $3^-_1$ state was observed, while for $^{140}$Ce the direct decays into the $2^+_1$ and the $0^+_2$ state were detected. The experimentally deduced transition strengths and excitation energies are compared to theoretical calculations in the framework of EDF theory plus QPM approach and systematically analyzed for $N=82$ isotones. In addition, negative parities for two $J=1$ states in $^{44}$Ca were deduced simultaneously. Conclusions: The experimental findings together with the theoretical calculations support the two-phonon character of the $1^-_1$ excitation in the light-to-medium-mass nucleus $^{40}$Ca as well as in the stable even-even $N=82$ nuclei., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, as accepted in Phys. The dipole response of $^{76}_{34}$Se in the energy range 4 to 9 MeV has been analyzed using a $(\vec\gamma,{\gamma}')$ polarized photon scattering technique, performed at the High Intensity $\gamma$-Ray Source facility, to complement previous work performed using unpolarized photons. The results of this work offer both an enhanced sensitivity scan of the dipole response and an unambiguous determination of the parities of the observed J=1 states. The dipole response is found to be dominated by $E1$ excitations, and can reasonably be attributed to a pygmy dipole resonance. Evidence is presented to suggest that a significant amount of directly unobserved excitation strength is present in the region, due to unobserved branching transitions in the decays of resonantly excited states. The dipole response of the region is underestimated when considering only ground state decay branches. We investigate the electric dipole response theoretically, performing calculations in a 3D cartesian-basis time-dependent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock framework., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, to be submitted to PRC

Octupole vibrational states were studied in the nucleus $^{150}\mathrm{Nd}$ via inelastic proton scattering with $\unit[10.9]{MeV}$ protons which are an excellent probe to excite natural parity states. For the first time in $^{150}\mathrm{Nd}$, both the scattered protons and the $\gamma$ rays were detected in coincidence giving the possibility to measure branching ratios in detail. Using the coincidence technique, the $B(E1)$ ratios of the decaying transitions for 10 octupole vibrational states and other negative-parity states to the yrast band were determined and compared to the Alaga rule. The positive and negative-parity states revealed by this experiment are compared with Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) calculations performed in the (spdf) boson space. The calculations are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, both for positive and negative-parity states.

A comprehensive decay scheme of $^{93}$Nb below 2 MeV has been constructed from information obtained with the $^{93}$Nb(n,n$^\prime$$\gamma$) and $^{94}$Zr(p,2n$\gamma$$\gamma$)$^{93}$Nb reactions. Branching ratios, lifetimes, transition multipolarities and spin assignments have been determined. From $M1$ and $E2$ strengths, fermionic-bosonic excitations of isoscalar and isovector character have been identified from the weak coupling $\pi1g_{9/2}$$\otimes$$^{92}_{40}$Zr and $\pi2p_{1/2}^{-1}$$\otimes$$^{94}_{42}$Mo configurations. A microscopic interpretation of such excitations is attained from shell-model calculations using low-momentum effective interactions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope 168Dy has been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV 82Se beam and a 170Er target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground state rotational band of 168Dy have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+ to 2+ transition in 170Dy was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of Total Routhian Surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed., 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. The possibility of observing neutrinoless double beta decay offers the opportunity of determining the neutrino mass IF the nuclear matrix element were known. Theoretical calculations are uncertain and measurements of the occupations of valence orbits by nucleons active in the decay can be important. The occupation of valence neutron orbits in the ground states of 76Ge and 76Se were determined by precisely measuring cross sections for both neutron-adding and removing transfer reactions. Our results indicate that the Fermi surface is much more diffuse than in theoretical (QRPA) calculations. We find that the populations of at least three orbits change significantly between these two ground states while in the calculations the changes are confined primarily to one orbit., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Precision measurements were carried out to test the similarities between the ground states of 76Ge and 76Se. The extent to which these two nuclei can be characterized as consisting of correlated pairs of neutrons in a BCS-like ground state was studied. The pair removal (p,t) reaction was measured at the far forward angle of 3 degrees. The relative cross sections are consistent (at the 5% level) with the description of these nuclei in terms of a correlated pairing state outside the N=28 closed shells with no pairing vibrations. Data were also obtained for 74Ge and 78Se.

The absolute and the relative quadrupole shape invariants q3 and K3 provide a model independent measure of triaxiality for beta-rigid nuclei. We will show that one can obtain q3 and K3 from a small number of observables. The approximations which are made will be shown to hold within a few percent both in the rigid triaxial rotor model and the interacting boson model. The shape parameter K3 is given for an exemplary set of nuclei and is translated into effective values of the geometrical deformation parameters beta and gamma., 16 pages, 4 figures

Low spin states in the self-conjugate even-even nucleus 48-Cr were investigated using the MINIBALL gamma-ray spectrometer. At the FN tandem accelerator in Cologne the 46-Ti(3-He,n) reaction was used for the measurement of gamma-gamma coincidences for an excitation function from 7 to 12 MeV beam energy. 17 excited states were observed, nine for the first time by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy, and new spin assignments were made. No excited states apart from the ground band were observed below 3.4 MeV., 5 pages, 5 figures, prepared for submission tp Phys. Rev. C

The odd-mass $^{117}$Sn nucleus was investigated in nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments up to an endpoint energy of the incident photon spectrum of 4.1 MeV at the bremsstrahlung facility of the Stuttgart University. More than 50 mainly hitherto unknown levels were found. From the measurement of the scattering cross sections model independent absolute electric dipole excitation strengths were extracted. The measured angular distributions suggested the spins of 11 excited levels. Quasi-particle phonon model calculations including a complete configuration space were performed for the first time for a heavy odd-mass spherical nucleus. These calculations give a clear insight in the fragmentation and distribution of the $E1$, $M1$, and $E2$ excitation strength in the low energy region. It is proven that the $1^{-}$ component of the two-phonon $[2^{+}_{1} \otimes 3^{-}_{1}]$ quintuplet built on top of the $1/2^{+}$ ground state is strongly fragmented. The nucleus 94Mo was investigated using a powerful combination of gamma-singles photon scattering experiments and gamma-gamma-coincidence studies following the beta-decay of 94mTc. The data survey short-lived J^pi=1+,2+ states and include branching ratios, E2/M1 mixing ratios, lifetimes, and transition strengths. The mixed-symmetry (MS) 1+ scissors mode and the 2+ MS state are identified from M1 strengths. A gamma transition between MS states was observed and its rate was measured. Nine M1 and E2 strengths involving MS states agree with the O(6) limit of the interacting boson model-2 using the proton boson E2 charge as the only free parameter., 9 pages, 3 PostScript figures included, ReVTeX, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters, tentatively scheduled for August 9, 1999
