We present a highly sensitive 2D line survey of TMC-1 obtained with the Yebes 40m radio telescope in the Q-band (31.13-49.53 GHz). These maps cover a region of 320 arcsec x 320 arcsec centred on the position of the QUIJOTE line survey with a spatial sampling of 20 arcsec. The region covering 240 arcsec x 240 arcsec, where a longer integration time was used, shows a homogenous sensitivity of 2-4 mK across the band. We present in this work the first determination of the spatial extent of benzonitrile (C6H5CN), which follows that of cyanopolyynes rather well, but differs significantly from that of the radicals CnH and CnN. We definitively conclude that aromatic species in TMC-1 are formed from chemical reactions involving smaller species in the densest zones of the cloud., Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We report new observations of molecular anions with the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m telescopes toward the cold dense clouds TMC-1 CP, Lupus-1A, L1527, L483, L1495B, and L1544. We detected for the first time C3N- and C5N- in Lupus-1A and C4H- and C6H- in L483. In addition, we report new lines of C6H- toward the six targeted sources, of C4H- toward TMC-1 CP, Lupus-1A, and L1527, and of C8H- and C3N- in TMC-1 CP. Excitation calculations indicate that the lines of anions accessible to radiotelescopes run from subthermally excited to thermalized as the size of the anion increases, with the degree of departure from thermalization depending on the H2 volume density and the line frequency. We noticed that the collision rate coefficients available for the radical C6H cannot explain various observational facts, which advises for a revisitation of the collision data for this species. The observations presented here, together with observational data from the literature, are used to model the excitation of interstellar anions and to constrain their abundances. In general, the anion-to-neutral ratios derived here agree within 50 % (a factor of two at most) with literature values, when available, except for the C4H-/C4H ratio, which shows higher differences due to a revision of the dipole moment of C4H. From the set of anion-to-neutral abundance ratios derived two conclusions can be drawn. First, the C6H-/C6H ratio shows a tentative trend in which it increases with increasing H2 density, as expected from theoretical grounds. And second, it is incontestable that the higher the molecular size the higher the anion-to-neutral ratio, which supports a formation mechanism based on radiative electron attachment. Nonetheless, calculated rate coefficients for electron attachment to the medium size species C4H and C3N are probably too high and too low, respectively, by more than one order of magnitude., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report the first laboratory and interstellar detection of the alpha-cyano vinyl radical (H2CCCN). This species was produced in the laboratory by an electric discharge of a gas mixture of vinyl cyanide, CH2CHCN, and Ne, and its rotational spectrum was characterized using a Balle-Flygare narrowband-type Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer operating in the frequency region of 8-40 GHz. The observed spectrum shows a complex structure due to tunneling splittings between two torsional sublevels of the ground vibronic state, 0+ and 0-, derived from a large-amplitude inversion motion. In addition, the presence of two equivalent hydrogen nuclei makes necessary to discern between ortho- and para-H2CCCN. A least squares analysis reproduces the observed transition frequencies with a standard deviation of ca. 3 kHz. Using the laboratory predictions, this radical is detected in the cold dark cloud TMC-1 using the Yebes 40m telescope and the QUIJOTE line survey. The 404-303 and 505-404 rotational transitions, composed of several hyperfine components, were observed in the 31.0-50.4 GHz range. Adopting a rotational temperature of 6K we derive a column density of (1.4+/-0.2)e11 cm-2 and (1.1+/-0.2)e11 cm-2 for ortho-H2CCCN and para-H2CCCN, respectively. The reactions C + CH3CN, and perhaps also N + CH2CCH, emerge as the most likely routes to H2CCCN in TMC-1., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters on 18/07/2023

Based on a novel laboratory method, 14 mm-wave lines of the molecular ion H$_2$CCCH$^+$ have been measured in high resolution, and the spectroscopic constants of this asymmetric rotor determined with high accuracy. Using the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30 m radio telescopes, we detect four lines of H$_2$CCCH$^+$ towards the cold dense core TMC-1. With a dipole moment of about 0.55 Debye obtained from high-level ab initio calculations, we derive a column density of 5.4$\pm$1$\times$10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 1.6$\pm$0.5$\times$10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the ortho and para species, respectively, and an abundance ratio N(H$_2$CCC)/N(H$_2$CCCH$^+$)= 2.8$\pm$0.7. The chemistry of H$_2$CCCH$^+$ is modelled using the most recent chemical network for the reactions involving the formation of H$_2$CCCH$^+$. We find a reasonable agreement between model predictions and observations, and new insights into the chemistry of C$_3$ bearing species in TMC-1 are obtained.

We report the detection of the propargyl radical (CH2CCH) in the cold dark cloud TMC-1 in the lambda 3 mm wavelength band. We recently discovered this species in space toward the same source at a wavelength of lambda 8 mm. In those observations, various hyperfine components of the 2,0,2-1,0,1 rotational transition, at 37.5 GHz, were detected using the Yebes 40m telescope. Here, we used the IRAM 30m telescope to detect ten hyperfine components of the 5,0,5-4,0,4 rotational transition, lying at 93.6 GHz. The observed frequencies differ by 0.2 MHz with respect to the predictions from available laboratory data. This difference is significant for a radioastronomical search for CH2CCH in interstellar sources with narrow lines. We thus included the measured frequencies in a new spectroscopic analysis to provide accurate frequency predictions for the interstellar search for propargyl at mm wavelengths. Moreover, we recommend that future searches for CH2CCH in cold interstellar clouds are carried out at lambda 3 mm, rather than at lambda 8 mm. The 5,0,5-4,0,4 transition is about five times more intense than the 2,0,2-1,0,1 one in TMC-1, which implies that detecting the former requires about seven times less telescope time than detecting the latter. We constrain the rotational temperature of CH2CCH in TMC-1 to 9.9 +/- 1.5 K, which indicates that the rotational levels of this species are thermalized at the gas kinetic temperature. The revised value of the column density of CH2CCH (including ortho and para species) is (1.0 +/- 0.2)e14 cm-2, and thus the CH2CCH/CH3CCH abundance ratio is revised from slightly below one to nearly one. This study opens the door for future detections of CH2CCH in other cold interstellar clouds, making possible to further investigate the role of this very abundant hydrocarbon radical in the synthesis of large organic molecules such as aromatic rings., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The high resolution spectrum of the v4 band of NH3D+ has been measured by difference frequency IR laser spectroscopy in a multipass hollow cathode discharge cell. From the set of molecular constants obtained from the analysis of the spectrum, a value of 262817(6) MHz (3sigma) has been derived for the frequency of the 1(0)-0(0) rotational transition. This value supports the assignment to NH3D+ of lines at 262816.7 MHz recorded in radio astronomy observations in Orion-IRc2 and the cold prestellar core B1-bS., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters 04 June 2013

The interstellar medium is enriched primarily by matter ejected from evolved low and intermediate mass stars. The outflows from these stars create a circumstellar envelope in which a rich gas-phase and dust-nucleation chemistry takes place. We observed the nearest carbon-rich evolved star, IRC+10216, using the PACS (55-210 {\mu}m) and SPIRE (194-672 {\mu}m) spectrometers on board Herschel. We find several tens of lines from SiS and SiO, including lines from the v=1 vibrational level. For SiS these transitions range up to J=124-123, corresponding to energies around 6700K, while the highest detectable transition is J=90-89 for SiO, which corresponds to an energy around 8400K. Both species trace the dust formation zone of IRC+10216, and the broad energy ranges involved in their detected transitions permit us to derive the physical properties of the gas and the particular zone in which each species has been formed. This allows us to check the accuracy of chemical thermodynamical equilibrium models and the suggested depletion of SiS and SiO due to accretion onto dust grains., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 7 pages in online appendix, Astronomy & Astrophysics in press

We perform a sensitive (line confusion limited), single-side band spectral survey towards Orion KL with the IRAM 30m telescope, covering the following frequency ranges: 80-115.5 GHz, 130-178 GHz, and 197-281 GHz. We detect more than 14 400 spectral features of which 10 040 have been identified up to date and attributed to 43 different molecules, including 148 isotopologues and lines from vibrationally excited states. In this paper, we focus on the study of OCS, HCS+, H2CS, CS, CCS, C3S, and their isotopologues. In addition, we map the OCS J=18-17 line and complete complementary observations of several OCS lines at selected positions around Orion IRc2 (the position selected for the survey). We report the first detection of OCS v2 = 1 and v3 = 1 vibrationally excited states in space and the first detection of C3S in warm clouds. Most of CCS, and almost all C3S, line emission arises from the hot core indicating an enhancement of their abundances in warm and dense gas. Column densities and isotopic ratios have been calculated using a large velocity gradient (LVG) excitation and radiative transfer code (for the low density gas components) and a local thermal equilibrium (LTE) code (appropriate for the warm and dense hot core component), which takes into account the different cloud components known to exist towards Orion KL, the extended ridge, compact ridge, plateau, and hot core. The vibrational temperature derived from OCS v2 = 1 and v3 = 1 levels is about 210 K, similar to the gas kinetic temperature in the hot core. These OCS high energy levels are probably pumped by absorption of IR dust photons. We derive an upper limit to the OC3S, H2CCS, HNCS, HOCS+, and NCS column densities. Finally, we discuss the D/H abundance ratio and infer the following isotopic abundances: 12C/13C=45+-20, 32S/34S=20+-6, 32S/33S=75+-29, and 16O/18O=250+-135., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the first detection of maser emission in the J=11-10, J=14-13 and J=15-14 transitions of the v=0 vibrational state of SiS toward the C-rich star IRC+10216. These masers seem to be produced in the very inhomogeneous region between the star and the inner dust formation zone, placed at 5-7 R*, with expansion velocities below 10 km/s. We interpret the pumping mechanism as due to overlaps between v=1-0 ro-vibrational lines of SiS and mid-IR lines of C2H2, HCN and their 13C isotopologues. The large number of overlaps found suggests the existence of strong masers for high-J v=0 and v=1 SiS transitions, located in the submillimeter range. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is called to revolutionise essentially all areas of Astrophysics. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. 7 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., We report the detection in space of a new molecular species that has been characterized spectroscopically and fully identified from astrophysical data. The observations were carried out with the IRAM 30 m telescope. The molecule is ubiquitous as its J = → 2 1 transition has been found in cold molecular clouds, prestellar cores, and shocks. However, it is not found in the hot cores of Orion-KL and in the carbon-rich evolved star IRC+10216. Three rotational transitions in perfect harmonic relation J = 2 3 5 have been identified in the prestellar core B1b. The molecule has a 1S electronic ground state and its J = → 2 1 transition presents the hyperfine structure characteristic of a molecule containing a nucleus with spin 1. A careful analysis of possible carriers shows that the best candidate is NS+. The derived rotational constant agrees within 0.3%-0.7% with ab initio calculations. NS+ was also produced in the laboratory to unambiguously validate the astrophysical assignment. The observed rotational frequencies and determined molecular constants confirm the discovery of the nitrogen sulfide cation in space. The chemistry of NS+ and related nitrogen-bearing species has been analyzed by means of a time-dependent gas-phase model. Nitriles play a key role as molecular precursors in prebiotic experiments based on the RNA-world scenario for the origin of life. These chemical compounds could have been partially delivered to the young Earth from extraterrestrial objects, stressing the importance of establishing the reservoir of nitriles in the interstellar medium. We report here the detection towards the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027 of several nitriles, including cyanic acid (HOCN), and three C$_4$H$_3$N isomers (cyanoallene, CH$_2$CCHCN; propargyl cyanide, HCCCH$_2$CN; and cyanopropyne (CH$_3$CCCN), and the tentative detections of cyanoformaldehyde (HCOCN), and glycolonitrile (HOCH$_2$CN). We have also performed the first interstellar search of cyanoacetaldehyde (HCOCH$_2$CN), which was not detected. Based on the derived molecular abundances of the different nitriles in G+0.693-0.027 and other interstellar sources, we have discussed their formation mechanisms in the ISM. We propose that the observed HOCN abundance in G+0.693-0.027 is mainly due to surface chemistry and subsequent shock-induced desorption, while HCOCN might be mainly formed through gas-phase chemistry. In the case of HOCH$_2$CN, several grain-surface routes from abundant precursors could produce it. The derived abundances of the three C$_4$H$_3$N isomers in G+0.693-0.027 are very similar, and also similar to those previously reported in the dark cold cloud TMC-1. This suggests that the three isomers are likely formed through gas-phase chemistry from common precursors, possibly unsaturated hydrocarbons (CH$_3$CCH and CH$_2$CCH$_2$) that react with the cyanide radical (CN). The rich nitrile feedstock found towards G+0.693-0.027 confirms that interstellar chemistry is able to synthesize in space molecular species that could drive the prebiotic chemistry of the RNA-world., Comment: Accepted in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

Cell membranes are a key element of life because they keep the genetic material and metabolic machinery together. All present cell membranes are made of phospholipids, yet the nature of the first membranes and the origin of phospholipids are still under debate. We report here the first detection in space of ethanolamine, NH$_2$CH$_2$CH$_2$OH, which forms the hydrophilic head of the simplest and second most abundant phospholipid in membranes. The molecular column density of ethanolamine in interstellar space is $N$=(1.51$\pm$0.07)$\times$10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, implying a molecular abundance with respect to H$_2$ of (0.9-1.4)$\times$10$^{-10}$. Previous studies reported its presence in meteoritic material but they suggested that it is synthesized in the meteorite itself by decomposition of amino acids. However, we find that the proportion of the molecule with respect to water in the interstellar medium is similar to the one found in the meteorite (10$^{-6}$). These results indicate that ethanolamine forms efficiently in space and, if delivered onto early Earth, it could have contributed to the assembling and early evolution of primitive membranes., Comment: Accepted in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America)
