CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering, we propose a CEF-level scheme which accounts for the easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy, where the low lying first excited CEF exhibits significantly stronger hybridization than the ground state. These results suggest that the orbital anisotropy of the ground state and low lying excited state doublets are important for realizing anisotropic electronic coupling between the $f$- and conduction electrons, which gives rise to the highly anisotropic hybridization observed in photoemission experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present thermopower measurements on Yb(Rh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$. Upon Co substitution the Kondo temperature is decreasing and the single large thermopower minimum observed for YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ splits into two minima. Simultaneously, the absolute thermopower values are strongly reduced due to a weaker exchange coupling between the $4f$ and the conduction electron states with increasing $x$. Pure YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ is considered a stable, trivalent system. Nevertheless, we still observe two minima in the thermopower indicative of weak residual Kondo scattering. This is in line with results from photo emission spectroscopy revealing a tiny contribution from Yb$^{2+}$. The value at the high-$T$ minimum in $S(T)$ is found to be proportional to the Sommerfeld coefficient for the whole series. This unexpected finding is discussed in relation to recent measurements of the valence and Fermi surface evolution with temperature., 13 pages, 4 figures

Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed on CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ in the presence of a magnetic field close to the upper critical field $\mu_{0} H_{\rm c2}$ in order to investigate its superconducting (SC) properties near pair-breaking fields. In lower fields, the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ abruptly decreased below the SC transition temperature $T_{\rm c}(H)$, a phenomenon understood within the framework of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity. In contrast, $1/T_1T$ was enhanced just below $T_{\rm c}(H)$ and exhibited a broad maximum when magnetic fields close to $\mu_0H_{\rm c2}(0)$ were applied parallel or perpendicular to the $c$ axis, although the Knight shift decreased just below $T_{\rm c}(H)$. This enhancement of $1/T_1T$, which was recently observed in the organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, suggests the presence of high-density Andreev bound states in the inhomogeneous SC region, a hallmark of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 is a model system to address two challenging problems in the field of strongly correlated electron systems: The first is the intriguing competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order when approaching a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The second is the occurrence of magnetic order along a very hard crystalline electric field (CEF) direction, i.e. along the one with the smallest available magnetic moment. Here, we present a detailed study of the evolution of the magnetic order in this system from a FM state with moments along the very hard c direction at x = 0.27 towards the yet unknown magnetic state at x = 0. We first observe a transition towards an AFM canted state with decreasing x and then to a pure AFM state. This confirms that the QCP in YbRh2Si2 is AFM, but the phase diagram is very similar to those observed in some inherently FM systems like NbFe2 and CeRuPO, which suggests that the basic underlying instability might be FM. Despite the huge CEF anisotropy the ordered moment retains a component along the c-axis also in the AFM state. The huge CEF anisotropy in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 excludes that this hard-axis ordering originates from a competing exchange anisotropy as often proposed for other heavy-fermion systems. The site-diluted compound (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ is a scarce realization of the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet partitioned into finite-size segments and is an ideal model compound for studying field-dependent effects of quenched disorder in the one-dimensional antiferromagnets. It differentiates from the systems studied so far in two aspects - the type of randomness and the nature of the energy gap in the pure sample. We have measured the specific heat of single-crystal (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 19.5 T. The contribution $C_{\perp}$ arising from the magnetic subsystem in an applied magnetic field perpendicular to the chains is determined. Compared to pure Yb$_4$As$_3$, for which $C_{\perp}$ indicates a gap opening, for diluted systems a non-exponential decay is found at low temperatures which is consistent with the thermodynamic scaling of the specific heat established for a Bose-glass phase., 8 pages, 17 figures, including supplemental material, accepted for PRB rapid communication

We address the origin of the magnetic-field independent -|A| T^{1/2} term observed in the low-temperature resistivity of several As-based metallic systems of the PbFCl structure type. For the layered compound ZrAs_{1.58}Se_{0.39}, we show that vacancies in the square nets of As give rise to the low-temperature transport anomaly over a wide temperature regime of almost two decades in temperature. This low-temperature behavior is in line with the non-magnetic version of the two-channel Kondo effect, whose origin we ascribe to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect operating at the vacancy-carrying As layer with a C_4 symmetry. The pair-breaking nature of the dynamical defects in the square nets of As explains the low superconducting transition temperature T_{\rm{c}}\approx 0.14 K of ZrAs_{1.58}Se_{0.39}, as compared to the free-of-vacancies homologue ZrP_{1.54}S_{0.46} (T_{\rm{c}}\approx 3.7 K). We report magnetization and specific heat measurements in the 2D frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 at temperatures down to 0.05 K and high magnetic fields up to 11.5 T applied along a, b and c-axes. The low-field susceptibility chi (T) M/B shows a broad maximum around 2.8 K characteristic of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and the overall temperature dependence is well described by high temperature series expansion calculations for the partially frustrated triangular lattice with J=4.46 K and J'/J=1/3. At much lower temperatures (< 0.4 K) and in in-plane field (along b and c-axes) several new intermediate-field ordered phases are observed in-between the low-field incommensurate spiral and the high-field saturated ferromagnetic state. The ground state energy extracted from the magnetization curve shows strong zero-point quantum fluctuations in the ground state at low and intermediate fields.

71Ga NQR, magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on polycrystalline Ge doped FeGa3 samples. A crossover from an insulator to a correlated local moment metal in the low doping regime and the evolution of itinerant ferromagnet upon further doping is found. For the nearly critical concentration at the threshold of ferromagnetic order, xC=0.15, (1/T1T) exhibits a pronounced T4/3 power law over two orders of magnitude in temperature which indicates 3D quantum critical ferromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, for the ordered x = 0.2 sample (TC = 6 K) 1/T1T could be fitted well in the frame of Moriya's SCR theory for weakly FM systems with 1/T1T proportional to chi. In contrast to this, the low doping regime nicely displays local moment behavior where 1/T1T proportional to chi2 is valid. For temperature tending to zero the Sommerfeld ratio = (C/T) is enhanced (70 mJ/mole-K2 for x = 0.1) which indicates the formation of heavy 3d-electrons., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

SmB$_6$, a so called Kondo insulator, is recently discussed as a candidate material for a strong topological insulator. We present detailed atomically resolved topographic information on the (001) surface from more than a dozen SmB$_6$ samples. Atomically flat, {\it in situ} cleaved surfaces often exhibit B- and Sm-terminated surfaces as well as reconstructed and non-reconstructed areas {\it coexisting} on different length scales. The terminations are unambiguously identified. In addition, electronic inhomogeneities are observed which likely result from the polar nature of the (001) surface and may indicate an inhomogeneous Sm valence at the surface of SmB$_6$. We present magnetization, specific heat, and 27Al NMR investigations on YbFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field. The magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures is strongly enhanced at weak magnetic fields, accompanied by a ln(T0/T) divergence of the low-T specific heat coefficient in zero field, which indicates a ground state of correlated electrons. From our hard X-ray photo emission spectroscopy (HAXPES) study, the Yb valence at 50 K is evaluated to be 2.38. The system displays valence fluctuating behavior in the low to intermediate temperature range, whereas above 400 K, Yb3+ carries a full and stable moment, and Fe carries a moment of about 3.1 mB. The enhanced value of the Sommerfeld Wilson ratio and the dynamic scaling of spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T [27(1/T1T)] with static susceptibility suggests admixed ferromagnetic correlations. 27(1/T1T) simultaneously tracks the valence fluctuations from the 4f -Yb ions in the high temperature range and field dependent antiferromagnetic correlations among partially Kondo screened Fe 3d moments at low temperature, the latter evolve out of an Yb 4f admixed conduction band., To appear in Phys. Kondo insulators and in particular their non-cubic representatives have remained poorly understood. Here we report on the development of an anisotropic energy pseudogap in the tetragonal compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ employing optical reflectivity measurements in broad frequency and temperature ranges, and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory calculations. The calculations provide evidence for a Kondo insulator-like response within the $a-a$ plane and a more metallic response along the c axis and qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations, helping to identify their origin.

We report low-temperature specific heat, $C(T)$, measurements on (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ with $x=0.01$ and $x=0.03$, where nonmagnetic Lu atoms are randomly distributed on antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chains with $J/k_{\mathrm B}=28$ K. The observed reduction of $C$ below 15 K with increasing $x$ is accurately described by quantum transfer matrix simulations without any adjustable parameter, implying that the system is an excellent experimental realization of segmented quantum spin chains. Finite-size effects consistent with conformal-field theory predictions are leading to the formation of an effective low-energy gap. The size of the gap increases with Lu content and accounts for the impurity driven reduction of the specific heat. For both concentrations our results verify experimentally the low temperature scaling behavior established theoretically and also confirm the value of $J$ determined from pure Yb$_4$As$_3$., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We report measurements of magnetic quantum oscillations and specific heat at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP)(B_{c0}\approx50T) of the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn_5. A sharp magnetic-field induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Our results demonstrate multiple classes of QCPs in the field-pressure phase diagram of this heavy-fermion metal, pointing to a universal description of QCPs. They also suggest that robust superconductivity is promoted by unconventional quantum criticality of a fluctuating Fermi surface., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands., 5 pages, 4 figures

We present research on the superconducting properties of Nb$_{x}$Re$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0.13-0.38) obtained by measuring the electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, specific heat $C_P(T)$, and London penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ decreases monotonically with an increase of $x$. The upper critical field $B_{c2}(T)$ for various $x$ can be nicely scaled by its corresponding $T_c$. The electronic specific heat $C_e(T)/T$, penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$, and superfluid density $\rho_{s}(T)$ demonstrate exponential behavior at low temperatures and can be well fitted by a one-gap BCS model. The residual Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma_0(B)$ in the superconducting state follows a linear field dependence. All these properties suggest an \emph{s}-wave BCS-type of superconductivity with a very large $B_{c2}(0)$ for Nb$_{x}$Re$_{1-x}$ (0.13 $\leq x \leq$ 0.38)., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We study the effect of magnetic fields up to 15 T on the heavy fermion state of YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ via Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements down to 50 mK. Our data show anomalies at three different characteristic fields. We compare our data to renormalized band structure calculations through which we identify Lifshitz transitions associated with the heavy fermion bands. The Hall measurements indicate that the de-renormalization of the quasiparticles, {\it i.e} the destruction of the local Kondo singlets, occurs smoothly while the Lifshitz transitions occur within rather confined regions of the magnetic field., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We present the discovery of ferromagnetism in single crystalline Yb(Rh$_{0.73}$Co$_{0.27}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below $T_{C} = 1.30\,$K with a spontaneous magnetic moment of $0.1\,��_{B}$/Yb along the crystallographic c-axis. This is shown by the huge c-susceptibility peak, the hysteresis in magnetization as well as by the field-dependent susceptibility and specific heat data. This discovery motivates the reinvestigation of the magnetic order in Yb(Rh$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ with $x < 0.27$ and in pure YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under small pressures with field along the $c$-direction to look for low-lying ferromagnetic order., 5 pages, 4 figures

We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR investigations on YFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field and zero field (NQR) measurements. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T (1/T1T) follow a weak power law (T^-0.4) temperature dependence, which is a signature of critical fluctuations of Fe moments. The value of the Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio and linear relation between 1/T1T and chi(T) suggest the existence of ferromagnetic correlations in this system. No magnetic ordering down to 50 mK in Cp(T) and the unusual temperature and field scaling of the bulk and NMR data are associated with a magnetic instability which drives the system to quantum criticality. The magnetic properties of the system are tuned by field wherein ferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed and a crossover from quantum critical to FL behavior is observed with increasing magnetic field.

Vojta have proposed to explain the quantum critical behavior of YbRh2Si2 in terms of a Zeeman-induced Lifshitz transition of an electronic band whose width is about 6 orders of magnitude smaller than that of conventional metals. Here, we note that the ultra-narrowness of the proposed band, as well as the proposed scenario per se, lead to properties which are qualitatively inconsistent with the salient features observed in YbRh2Si2 near its quantum critical point., 3 pages

B 85, 035119 (2012)] The evolution of spin dynamics from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2 was investigated by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. While the Kondo temperature changes by one order of magnitude, all compositions of the single crystalline series Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 show well defined ESR spectra with a clear Yb3+ character for temperatures below \approx 20 K. With increasing Co-content the ESR g-factor along the c-direction strongly increases indicating a continuous change of the ground state wave function and, thus, a continuous change of the crystal electric field. The linewidth presents a complex dependence on the Co-content and is discussed in terms of the Co-doping dependence of the Kondo interaction, the magnetic anisotropy and the influence of ferromagnetic correlations between the 4f states. The results provide evidence that, for low Co-doping, the Kondo interaction allows narrow ESR spectra despite the presence of a large magnetic anisotropy, whereas at high Co-concentrations, the linewidth is controlled by ferromagnetic correlations. A pronounced broadening due to critical correlations at low temperatures is only observed at the highest Co-content. We report measurements of the London penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$ and the electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$ on high-quality single crystals of the filled-skutterudite superconductor PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($T_c\simeq$8K). Both quantities show a weak temperature dependence at $T\ll T_c$, following $\Delta\lambda\sim T^n$ ($n\simeq 3.2$) and $C_e/T\sim T^{2.8}$. Such temperature dependences deviate from both conventional s-wave type and nodal superconductivity. A detailed analysis indicates that the superfluid density $\rho_s(T)$, derived from the penetration depth, as well as the electronic specific heat can be consistently described in terms of a two-gap model, providing strong evidence of multiband superconductivity for PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We studied the new heavy-fermion system YbNi$_{4}$P$_{2}$, which presents strong ferromagnetic correlations, using the local $^{31}$P NMR probe over a wide field (0.2-8.6 \textsf{T}) and temperature (1.8-200 K) range. $^{31}$P NMR Knight shift provides the static spin susceptibility which tracks the bulk susceptibility whereas the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{31}(1/T_{1}$) provide information about the fluctuations of the Yb 4f moment. The Korringa law is valid over a wide range in temperature and field. The Korringa product $^{31}(1/T_{1}TK^{2}$S$_{0}$) $\ll$ 1 gives evidence for the presence of strong ferromagnetic correlations. Over two decades in temperature a $^{31}(1/T_{1}T) \sim T^{-3/4}$ behaviour was found., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A detailed study of the spin dynamics of the S-state ions Gd3+ and Eu2+ in the filled skutterudites La1-xRxPt4Ge12 (R= Gd, Eu) is reported. The spin dynamics is investigated directly by means of Gd3+ and Eu2+ electron spin resonance (ESR), performed at X-band (~ 9.4 GHz) and Q-band (~ 34 GHz) frequencies in the temperature intervals 8, Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The filled-skutterudite compound CePt4Ge12 is situated close to the border between intermediate-valence of Ce and heavy-fermion behavior. Substitution of Ge by Sb drives the system into a strongly correlated and ultimately upon further increasing the Sb concentration into an antiferromagnetically ordered state. Our experiments evidence a delicate interplay of emerging Kondo physics and the formation of a local 4f moment. An extended non-Fermi-liquid region, which can be understood in the framework of a Kondo-disorder model, is observed. Band-structure calculations support the conclusion that the physical properties are governed by the interplay of electron supply via Sb substitution and the concomitant volume effects., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Figure

We report on high-resolution dc-magnetization (M) measurements on a high-quality single crystal of YbCo2Si2. M was measured down to 0.05K and in fields up to 4T, with the magnetic field oriented along the crystallographic directions [100], [110] and [001] of the tetragonal structure.

We present a new Kondo-lattice system, YbNi4P2, which is a clean heavy-fermion metal with a severely reduced ferromagnetic ordering temperature at T_C=0.17K, evidenced by distinct anomalies in susceptibility, specific-heat, and resistivity measurements. The ferromagnetic nature of the transition, with only a small ordered moment of ~0.05mu_B, is established by a diverging susceptibility at T_C with huge absolute values in the ferromagnetically ordered state, severely reduced by small magnetic fields. Furthermore, YbNi4P2 is a stoichiometric system with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal and electronic structure and strong correlation effects which dominate the low temperature properties. This is reflected by a stronger-than-logarithmically diverging Sommerfeld coefficient and a linear-in-T resistivity above T_C which cannot be explained by any current theoretical predictions. These exciting characteristics are unique among all correlated electron systems and make this an interesting material for further in-depth investigations., 14 pages, 6 figures

We present a study of the evolution of magnetism from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2. Single crystals of Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 were grown for 0 < x < 1 and studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements, as well as photoemission spectroscopy. The results evidence a complex magnetic phase diagram, with a non-monotonic evolution of T_N and two successive transitions for some compositions resulting in two tricritical points. The strong similarity with the phase diagram of YbRh2Si2 under pressure indicates that Co substitution basically corresponds to the application of positive chemical pressure. Analysis of the data proves a strong reduction of the Kondo temperature T_K with increasing Co content, T_K becoming smaller than T_N for x ~ 0.5, implying a strong localization of the 4f electrons. Furthermore, low-temperature susceptibility data confirm a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange. The series Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 provides an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the magnetism at the quantum critical point in the vicinity of YbRh2Si2 where the antiferromagnetic phase disappears (T_N=>0)., 11 pages, 9 figures

High--quality single crystals of the heavy fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$ have been studied by means of low--temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. Methods were established to facilitate \textit{in-situ} sample cleaving. Spectroscopy in CeCoIn$_5$ reveals a gap which persists to above $T_c$, possibly evidencing a precursor state to SC. Atomically resolved topographs show a rearrangement of the atoms at the crystal surface. This modification at the surface might influence the surface properties as detected by tunneling spectroscopy.

The combination of low-temperature specific-heat and nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements reveals important information of the ground-state properties of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, which has been proposed as a rare example of a tetragonal Kondo-insulator (KI). The NMR spin-latticerelaxation rate $1/T_1$ deviates from the Korringa law below 100 K signaling the onset of an energy gap $\Delta E_g1/k_B \simeq 30$K. This gap is stable against magnetic fields up to 10 T. Below 10 K, however, unusual low-energy excitations of in-gap states are observed, which depend strongly on the field H. The specific heat C detects these excitations in the form of an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma = C(T)/T$ : In zero field, $\gamma$ increases steeply below 5 K, reaching a maximum at 0.1 K, and then saturates at $\gamma = 0.6$ J/molK$^2$. This maximum is shifted to higher temperatures with increasing field suggesting a residual density of states at the Fermi level developing a spin gap $\Delta E_g2$. A simple model, based on two narrow quasiparticle bands located at the Fermi level - which cross the Fermi level in zero field at 0.022 states/meV f.u. - can account qualitatively as well as quantitatively for the measured observables. In particular, it is demonstrated that fitting our data of both specific heat and NMR to the model, incorporating a Ce magnetic moment of $\mu = \Delta E_g1/\mu_{0H} \simeq 1 \mu_B$, leads to the prediction of the field dependence of the gap. Our measurements rule out the presence of a quantum critical point as the origin for the enhanced $\gamma$ in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ and suggest that this arises rather from correlated, residual in-gap states at the Fermi level. This work provides a fundamental route for future investigations into the phenomenon of narrow-gap formation in the strongly correlated class of system, Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

We have investigated the influence of Fe-excess on the electrical transport and magnetism of Fe1+yTe0.5Se0.5 (y=0.04 and 0.09) single crystals. Both compositions exhibit resistively determined superconducting transitions (Tc) with an onset temperature of about 15 K. From the width of the superconducting transition and the magnitude of the lower critical field Hc1, it is inferred that excess of Fe suppresses superconductivity. The linear and non-linear responses of the ac-susceptibility show that the superconducting state for these compositions is inhomogeneous. A possible origin of this phase separation is a magnetic coupling between Fe-excess occupying interstitial sites in the chalcogen planes and those in the Fe-square lattice. The temperature derivative of the resistivity drho/dT in the temperature range Tc < T < Ta with Ta being the temperature of a magnetic anomaly, changes from positive to negative with increasing Fe. A log 1/T divergence of the resistivity above Tc in the sample with higher amount of Fe suggests a disorder driven electronic localization., 7 pages

We report investigations of the optical properties of the narrow gap semiconductor FeSb2 in comparison with the structural homolog RuSb2. In the infrared region the latter shows insulating behavior in whole investigated temperature range (10 - 300 K) whereas the optical reflectivity of FeSb2 shows typical semiconductor behavior upon decreasing the temperature. The conduction electron contribution to the reflectivity is suppressed and the opening of a direct and an indirect charge excitation gap in the far-infrared energy region is observed. Those gap openings are characterized by a redistribution of spectral weight of the optical conductivity in an energy region much larger than the gap energies indicating that strong electron-electron correlations are involved in the formation of the charge gap. Calculations of the optical conductivity from the band structure also provided evidence for the presence of strong electronic correlations. Analyzing the spectra with a fundamental absorption across the gap of parabolic bands yields a direct gap at 130 meV and two indirect gaps at 6 and 31 meV. The strong reduction in the free-carrier concentration at low energies and low temperatures is also reflected in a change in the asymmetry of the phonon absorption which indicates a change in the phonon-conduction-electron interaction., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We carried out electrical resistivity experiments on (Yb,La)Rh2Si2 and on Yb(Rh,Ir)2Si2 under pressure and in magnetic fields. YbRh2Si2 exhibits a weak antiferromagnetic transition at atmospheric pressure with a N\'eel temperature of only T_N = 70 mK. By applying a small magnetic field T_N can be continuously suppressed to T=0 at B_c = 60 mT (B_|_c) driving the system to a quantum critical point (QCP). On applying external pressure the magnetic phase is stabilized and T_N(p) is increasing as usually observed in Yb-based heavy-fermion metals. Substituting Yb by La or Rh by Ir allows to create a negative chemical pressure, La (Ir) being smaller than Yb (Rh), and eventually to drive YbRh2Si2 to a pressure controlled QCP. We report on precise low-temperature specific-heat measurements, C(T), of YbRh2Si2 in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic phase transition on a single crystal of superior quality (RRR 150). We observe a very sharp peak at T_N=72mK with absolute values as high as C/T=8J/molK^2. A detailed analysis of the critical exponent \alpha around T_N reveals \alpha=0.38 which differs significantly from those of the conventional universality classes in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, where \alpha, Comment: Accepted for PRL

We develop a theoretical basis for understanding the spin relaxation processes in Kondo lattice systems with heavy fermions as experimentally observed by electron spin resonance (ESR). The Kondo effect leads to a common energy scale that regulates a logarithmic divergence of different spin kinetic coefficients and supports a collective spin motion of the Kondo ions with conduction electrons. We find that the relaxation rate of a collective spin mode is greatly reduced due to a mutual cancelation of all the divergent contributions even in the case of the strongly anisotropic Kondo interaction. The contribution to the ESR linewidth caused by the local magnetic field distribution is subject to motional narrowing supported by ferromagnetic correlations. We report low-temperature thermal-expansion measurements on single crystals of the {\it layered} heavy fermion system \cri ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.6$) and compare it with a previous study on the related {\it cubic} system \ci [R. K\"{u}chler {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 256403 (2006)]. Both systems display a quantum critical point as proven by a divergent Gr\"uneisen ratio. Most remarkably, the three-dimensional itinerant model explains quantum criticality in {\it both} systems, suggesting that the crystalline anisotropy in \cri is unimportant. A quantum critical endpoint related to a metamagnetic transition causes distinct signatures in the thermodynamic quantities of a compound. We argue that, irrespective of the microscopic details of the considered material, the diverging differential susceptibility combined with the Ising symmetry of the endpoint give rise to a number of characteristic metamagnetic phenomena. In the presence of a magnetoelastic coupling, one finds a correspondence of susceptibility, magnetostriction and compressibility and, as a result, a pronounced crystal softening, a diverging Grueneisen parameter, a sign change of thermal expansion alpha(H), and a minimum in the specific heat coefficient gamma(H). Low-temperature (T) heat-capacity measurements under hydrostatic pressure of up to p=2.1 GPa have been performed on single-crystalline CeCu2Si2. A broad superconducting (SC) region exists in the T-p phase diagram. In the low-pressure region antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and in the high-pressure region valence fluctuations had previously been proposed to mediate Cooper pairing. We could identify these two distinct SC regions. We found different thermodynamic properties of the SC phase in both regions, supporting the proposal that different mechanisms might be implied in the formation of superconductivity., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The heavy fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is studied by low-temperature magnetization $M(T)$ and specific-heat $C(T)$ measurements at magnetic fields close to the quantum critical point ($H_c=0.06$ T, $H\perp c$). Upon approaching the instability, $dM/dT$ is more singular than $C(T)$, leading to a divergence of the magnetic Gr��neisen ratio $��_{\rm mag}=-(dM/dT)/C$. Within the Fermi liquid regime, $��_{\rm mag}=-G_r(H-H_c^{fit})$ with $G_r=-0.30\pm 0.01$ and $H_c^{fit}=(0.065\pm 0.005)$ T which is consistent with scaling behavior of the specific-heat coefficient in YbRh$_2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$. The field-dependence of $dM/dT$ indicates an inflection point of the entropy as a function of magnetic field upon passing the line $T^\star(H)$ previously observed in Hall- and thermodynamic measurements., 4 pages, 3 Figures

We present an overview of magnetotransport measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn$_5$. Sensitive measurements of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance (MR) are used to elucidate the low temperature phase diagram of this system. The normal-state magnetotransport is highly anomalous, and experimental signatures of a pseudogap-like precursor state to superconductivity as well as evidence for two distinct scattering times governing the Hall effect and the MR are observed. Our observations point out the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the magnetotransport in this class of materials. The implications of these findings, both in the context of unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion systems as well as in relation to the high temperature superconducting cuprates are discussed.

We present an analysis of the normal state magnetotransport in the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn${_5}$. The Hall effect and the transverse magnetoresistance in this material do not appear to be uniquely correlated, as inferred from the field dependence of the current ratio ($R_{\sigma} = \sigma_{xy} / \sigma_{xx}^2 H$). The Hall coefficient is seen to satisfy a scaling equation of the form $R_H = f [H / (a + b T^c)]$. These results are compared to those observed earlier in CeCoIn$_5$, and are discussed in terms of the contrasting phase diagram which the CeIrIn$_5$ system exhibits in relation to its Co counterpart.

We investigated the vortex dynamics in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li_2Pt_3B in the temperature range 0.1 K - 2.8 K. Two different logarithmic creep regimes in the decay of the remanent magnetization from the Bean critical state have been observed. In the first regime, the creep rate is extraordinarily small, indicating the existence of a new, very effective pinning mechanism. At a certain time a vortex avalanche occurs that increases the logarithmic creep rate by a factor of about 5 to 10 depending on the temperature. This may indicate that certain barriers against flux motion are present and they can be opened under increased pressure exerted by the vortices. A possible mechanism based on the barrier effect of twin boundaries is briefly discussed.

We present an analysis of the normal-state Hall effect and magnetoresistance in the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn${_5}$. It is demonstrated that the modified Kohler's scaling--which relates the magnetoresistance to the Hall angle--breaks down prior to the onset of superconductivity due to the presence of a precursor state to superconductivity in this system. A model-independent, single-parameter scaling of the Hall angle governed solely by this precursor state is observed. Neither the Hall coefficient nor the resistivity exhibit this scaling implying that this precursor state preferentially influences the Hall channel.

We report experimental and theoretical investigations of the Hall effect in YbRh2Si2 and its reference compounds LuRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. Based on band-structure calculations we identify two bands dominating the Hall coefficient in all these compounds. For the case of LuRh2Si2 - the non-magnetic reference compound of YbRh2Si2 - the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient is described quantitatively to arise from two hole-like bands. For YbIr2Si2 and YbRh2Si2, renormalized band calculations yield two bands of opposite character. In YbRh2Si2 these two bands almost compensate each other. We present strong indications that the sample dependences of the low-temperature Hall coefficient observed for YbRh2Si2 arise from slight variations of the relative scattering rates of the two bands. We present the thermopower S(T) and the resistivity rho(T) of Lu(1-x)Yb(x)Rh2Si2 in the temperature range 3 K < T < 300 K. S(T) is found to change from two minima for dilute systems (x < 0.5) to a single large minimum in pure YbRh2Si2. A similar behavior has also been found for the magnetic contribution to the resistivity rho_mag(T). The appearance of the low-T extrema in S(T) and rho_mag(T) is attributed to the lowering of the Kondo scale with decreasing x. The evolution of the characteristic energy scales for both the Kondo effect and the crystal electric field splitting are deduced. An extrapolation allows to estimate the Kondo temperature of YbRh2Si2 to 29 K., 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev. B

We studied the temperature-pressure phase diagram of EuFe2As2 by measurements of the electrical resistivity. The antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition at T_0 associated with the FeAs-layers is continuously suppressed with increasing pressure, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of the Eu 2+ moments seems to be nearly pressure independent up to 2.6 GPa. Above 2 GPa a sharp drop of the resistivity, \rho(T), indicates the onset of superconductivity at T_c \approx 29.5 K. Surprisingly, on further reducing the temperature \rho(T) is increasing again and exhibiting a maximum caused by the ordering of the Eu 2+ moments, a behavior which is reminiscent of re-entrant superconductivity as it is observed in the ternary Chevrel phases or in the rare-earth nickel borocarbides.

An electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the heavy fermion compound YbRh2Si2 for fields up to ~ 8 T reveals a strongly anisotropic signal below the single ion Kondo temperature T_K ~ 25 K. A remarkable similarity between the T-dependence of the ESR parameters and that of the specific heat and the 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance data gives evidence that the ESR response is given by heavy fermions which are formed below T_K and that ESR properties are determined by their field dependent mass and lifetime. The signal anisotropy, otherwise typical for Yb{3+} ions, suggests that, owing to a strong hybridization with conduction electrons at T < T_K, the magnetic anisotropy of the 4f states is absorbed in the ESR of heavy quasiparticles. Tuning the Kondo effect on the 4f states with magnetic fields ~ 2 - 8 T and temperature 2 - 25 K yields a gradual change of the ESR g-factor and linewidth which reflects the evolution of the Kondo state in this Kondo lattice system., new substantially revised version

Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape., 3 Figures

The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is the first material, where different experimental probes show strong evidence pointing to the realization of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. The inhomogeneous superconducting FFLO state with a periodically modulated order parameter was predicted to appear in Pauli-limited, sufficiently clean type-II superconductors already more than 40 years ago. On the other hand, CeCoIn5 is supposed to be close to a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) showing strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations (SF) at atmospheric pressure. High resolution topographic images obtained by scanning tunneling microscope in the insulating state of Pr0.68Pb0.32MnO3 single crystals showed regular stripe-like or zigzag patterns on a width scale of 0.4 - 0.5 nm confirming a high temperature polaronic state. Spectroscopic studies revealed inhomogeneous maps of zero-bias conductance with small patches of metallic clusters on length scale of 2 - 3 nm only within a narrow temperature range close to the metal-insulator transition. The results give a direct observation of polarons in the insulating state, phase separation of nanometer-scale metallic clusters in the paramagnetic metallic state, and a homogeneous ferromagnetic state.

The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is believed to be close to a magnetic instability, but no static magnetic order has been found. Cadmium doping on the In-site shifts the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism to the latter with an extended concentration range where both types of order coexist at low temperatures. We investigated the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeCoIn5, being antiferromagnetically ordered below T_N=3 K and superconducting below T_c=1.3 K, by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector Q_AF = (1/2,1/2,1/2) commensurate with the crystal lattice. Upon entering the superconducting state the magnetic intensity seems to change only little. The commensurate magnetic ordering in CeCo(In1-xCdx)5 is in contrast to the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering observed in the closely related compound CeRhIn5. Our results give new insights in the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in the family of CeTIn5 (T=Co, Rh, and Ir) based compounds., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
