Search

FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$(FTS) occupies a special spot in modern condensed matter physics at the intersections of electron correlation, topology, and unconventional superconductivity. The bulk electronic structure of FTS is predicted to be topologically nontrivial thanks to the band inversion between the $d_{xz}$ and $p_z$ bands along $\Gamma$-$Z$. However, there remain debates in both the authenticity of the Dirac surface states (DSS) and the experimental deviations of band structure from the theoretical band inversion picture. Here we resolve these debates through a comprehensive ARPES investigation. We first observe a persistent DSS independent of $k_z$. Then, by comparing FTS with FeSe which has no band inversion along $\Gamma$-$Z$, we identify the spectral weight fingerprint of both the presence of the $p_z$ band and the inversion between the $d_{xz}$ and $p_z$ bands. Furthermore, we propose a reconciling band structure under the framework of a tight-binding model preserving crystal symmetry. Our results highlight the significant influence of correlation on modifying the band structure and make a strong case for the existence of topological band structure in this unconventional superconductor.

Metastable phases present a promising route to expand the functionality of complex materials. Of particular interest are light-induced metastable phases that are inaccessible under equilibrium conditions, as they often host new, emergent properties switchable on ultrafast timescales. However, the processes governing the trajectories to such hidden phases remain largely unexplored. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the formation of a hidden quantum state in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ upon photoexcitation. Our results reveal the nonthermal character of the transition governed by a collective charge-density-wave excitation. Utilizing a double-pulse excitation of the structural mode, we show vibrational coherent control of the phase-transition efficiency. Our demonstration of exceptional control, switching speed, and stability of the hidden phase are key for device applications., 17 pages, 13 figures

The hallmark of nematic order in iron-based superconductors is a resistivity anisotropy but it is unclear to which extent quasiparticle dispersions, lifetimes and coherence contribute. While the lifted degeneracy of the Fe $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ dispersions has been studied extensively, only little is known about the two other factors. Here, we combine in situ strain tuning with ARPES and study the nematic response of the spectral weight in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. The symmetry analysis of the ARPES spectra demonstrates that the $d_{xz}$ band gains quasiparticle spectral weight compared to the $d_{yz}$ band for negative antisymmetric strain $\Delta \epsilon_{yy}$ suggesting the same response inside the nematic phase. Our results are compatible with a different coherence of the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbital within a Hund's metal picture. Copper-oxide high TC superconductors possess a number of exotic orders co-existing with or proximal to superconductivity, whose quantum fluctuations may account for the unusual behaviors of the normal state, even affecting superconductivity. Yet, spectroscopic evidence about such quantum fluctuations remains elusive. Here, we reveal spectroscopic fingerprints for such fluctuations associated with a charge order (CO) in nearly optimally-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). In the superconducting state, while the quasi-elastic CO signal decreases with temperature, the interplay between CO fluctuations and bond-stretching phonons in the form of a Fano-like interference paradoxically increases, incompatible with expectations for competing orders. Invoking general principles, we argue that this behavior reflects the properties of a dissipative system near an order-disorder quantum critical point, where the dissipation varies with the opening of the pseudogap and superconducting gap at low temperatures, leading to the proliferation of quantum critical fluctuations which melt CO., 24 pages, Supplementary Information included. We study ultrafast x-ray diffraction on the charge density wave (CDW) of SmTe$_3$ using an x-ray free electron laser. The CDW peaks show that photoexcitation with near-infrared pump centered at 800 nm generates domain walls of the order parameter propagating perpendicular to the sample surface. These domain walls break the CDW long range order and suppress the diffraction intensity of the CDW for times much longer than the $\sim 1$~ps recovery of the local electronic gap. We reconstruct the spatial and temporal dependence of the order parameter using a simple Ginzburg-Landau model and find good agreement between the experimental and model fluence dependences. Based on the model we find that at long times, depending on the pump fluence, multiple domain walls remain at distances of few nm from the surface.

The pseudogap, d-wave superconductivity and electron-boson coupling are three intertwined key ingredients in the phase diagram of the cuprates. Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is a 5d-electron counterpart of the cuprates in which both the pseudogap and a d-wave instability have been observed. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the third key player in electron-doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$: electron-boson coupling. A kink in nodal dispersion is observed with an energy scale of ~50 meV. The strength of the kink changes with doping, but the energy scale remains the same. These results provide the first noncuprate platform for exploring the relationship between the pseudogap, d-wave instability and electron-boson coupling in doped Mott insulators.

We studied the electronic structure of the heavy fermion compound Yb(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$)$_2$Ge$_2$ with $x=0$ and nominally $x=0.125$ using ARPES and LDA calculations. We find a valence band structure of Yb corresponding to a non-integer valence close to $3+$. The three observed crystal electric field levels with a splitting of 32 and 75 meV confirm the suggested configuration with a quasi-quartet ground state. The experimentally determined band structure of the conduction electrons with predominantly Ru $4d$ character is well reproduced by our calculations. YbRu$_2$Ge$_2$ undergoes a non-magnetic phase transition into a ferroquadrupolar ordered state below 10.2\,K and then to an antiferromagnetically ordered state below 6.5\,K. A small hole Fermi surface shows nesting features in our calculated band structure and its size determined by ARPES is close to the magnetic ordering wave vector found in neutron scattering. The transitions are suppressed when YbRu$_2$Ge$_2$ is doped with 12.5% Rh. The electron doping leads to a shift of the band structure and successive Lifshitz transitions., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We study the band structure of twinned and detwinned BaFe$_2$As$_2$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The combination of measurements in the ordered and normal state along four high-symmetry momentum directions $\Gamma$/Z--X/Y enables us to identify the complex reconstructed band structure in the ordered state in great detail. We clearly observe the nematic splitting of the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals as well as folding due to magnetic order with a wave vector of $(\pi,\pi,\pi)$. We are able to assign all observed bands. In particular we suggest an assignment of the electron bands different from previous reports. The high quality spectra allow us to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the band structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the iron-based superconductor family, Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This system harbors the recently discovered double-Q magnetic order appearing in a reentrant C$_4$ phase deep within the underdoped regime of the phase diagram that is otherwise dominated by the coupled nematic phase and collinear antiferromagnetic order. From a detailed temperature-dependence study, we identify the electronic response to the nematic phase in an orbital-dependent band shift that strictly follows the rotational symmetry of the lattice and disappears when the system restores C$_4$ symmetry in the low temperature phase. In addition, we report the observation of a distinct electronic reconstruction that cannot be explained by the known electronic orders in the system.

The pseudogap phenomena have been a long-standing mystery of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Unlike the pseudogap in hole-doped cuprates, however, the pseudogap in the electron-doped counterpart has been attributed to band folding due to short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on electron-doped cuprates showing spin-glass and disordered AFM behaviors at low temperatures, and found that the gap magnitude \textit{decreases} in the antinodal region contrary to the hole-doped case. Moreover, the gap opening position was not always on the AFM Brillouin zone boundary in contradiction with the requirement of the AFM band-folding picture. These features are consistent with cluster dynamical-mean-field-theory calculations which predict an $s$-symmetry pseudogap that shrinks in the andinodal region. The present results support the scenario that the proximity to the Mott insulator, without relying on the well-developed AFM correlation, gives rise to a momentum-dependent pseudogap of $s$-symmetry with indirect gap commonly in the electron-doped and hole-doped cuprates, implying a universal origin of the pseudogap with a similarity to the Mott gap formation.

The recently demonstrated x-ray scattering approach using a free electron laser with a high field pulsed magnet has opened new opportunities to explore the charge density wave (CDW) order in cuprate high temperature superconductors. Using this approach, we substantially degrade the superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 33 T to investigate the onset of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ at low temperatures near a putative quantum critical point (QCP) at $p_1\sim $ 0.08 holes per Cu. We find no CDW can be detected in a sample with a doping concentration less than $p_1$. Our results indicate that the onset of the CDW ground state lies inside the zero-field superconducting dome, and broken translational symmetry is associated with the putative QCP at $p_1$, Comment: 4 figures

We investigated the doping dependence of magnetic excitations in the lightly doped cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4 via combined studies of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L3-edge and theoretical calculations. With increasing doping, the magnon dispersion is found to be essentially unchanged, but the spectral width broadens and the spectral weight varies differently at different momenta. Near the Brillouin zone center, we directly observe bimagnon excitations which possess the same energy scale and doping dependence as previously observed by Raman spectroscopy. They disperse weakly in energy-momentum space, and are consistent with a bimagnon dispersion that is renormalized by the magnon-magnon interaction at the zone center., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We have performed a systematic high-momentum-resolution photoemission study on ZrTe$_5$ using $6$ eV photon energy. We have measured the band structure near the $\Gamma$ point, and quantified the gap between the conduction and valence band as $18 \leq \Delta \leq 29$ meV. We have also observed photon-energy-dependent behavior attributed to final-state effects and the 3D nature of the material's band structure. Our interpretation indicates the gap is intrinsic and reconciles discrepancies on the existence of a topological surface state reported by different studies. The existence of a gap suggests that ZrTe$_5$ is not a 3D strong topological insulator nor a 3D Dirac semimetal. Therefore, our experiment is consistent with ZrTe$_5$ being a 3D weak topological insulator., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We have investigated the superconducting gap of optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.65}$Ru$_{0.35}$)$_2$As$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) using bulk-sensitive 7 eV laser and synchrotron radiation. It was found that the gap is isotropic in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane both on the electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs). The gap magnitudes of two resolved hole FSs show similar $k_z$ dependences and decrease as $k_z$ approaches $\sim$ 2$\pi$/$c$ (i.e., around the Z point) unlike the other Fe-based superconductors reported so far, where the superconducting gap of only one hole FS shows a strong $k_z$ dependence. This unique gap structure can be understood in the scenario that the $d_{z^2}$ orbital character is mixed into both hole FSs due to the finite spin-orbit coupling between almost degenerate FSs and is reproduced by calculations within the random phase approximation including the spin-orbit coupling.

Properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are highly sensitive to the presence of defects in the crystal structure. A detailed understanding of defect structure may lead to control of material properties through defect engineering. Here we provide direct evidence for the existence of isolated, one-dimensional charge density waves at mirror twin boundaries in single-layer MoSe2. Our low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements reveal a substantial bandgap of 60 - 140 meV opening at the Fermi level in the otherwise one dimensional metallic structure. We find an energy-dependent periodic modulation in the density of states along the mirror twin boundary, with a wavelength of approximately three lattice constants. The modulations in the density of states above and below the Fermi level are spatially out of phase, consistent with charge density wave order. In addition to the electronic characterization, we determine the atomic structure and bonding configuration of the one-dimensional mirror twin boundary by means of high-resolution non-contact atomic force microscopy. Density functional theory calculations reproduce both the gap opening and the modulations of the density of states.

eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of about 0.9 m^2 and 0.6 m^2 at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering, 16 pages, 16 figures. We present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the substitution-dependence of the electronic structure of Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{2}$(Se$_{1-z}$S$_z$)$_2$ (z = 0, 0.5, 1), where superconductivity is continuously suppressed into a metallic phase. Going from the non-superconducting Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{2}$(Se$_{1-z}$S$_z$)$_2$ to superconducting Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_2$, we observe little change of the Fermi surface topology, but a reduction of the overall bandwidth by a factor of 2 as well as an increase of the orbital-dependent renormalization in the $d_{xy}$ orbital. Hence for these heavily electron-doped iron chalcogenides, we have identified electron correlation as explicitly manifested in the quasiparticle bandwidth to be the important tuning parameter for superconductivity, and that moderate correlation is essential to achieving high $T_C$.

Nematic state, where the system is translationally invariant but breaks the rotational symmetry, has drawn great attentions recently due to experimental observations of such a state in both cuprates and iron-based superconductors. The mechanism of nematicity that is likely tied to the pairing mechanism of high-Tc, however, still remains controversial. Here, we studied the electronic structure of multilayer FeSe film by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We found that the FeSe film enters the nematic state around 125 K, while the electronic signature of long range magnetic order has not been observed down to 20K indicating the non-magnetic origin of the nematicity. The band reconstruction in the nematic state is characterized by the splitting of the dxz and dyz bands. More intriguingly, such energy splitting is strong momentum dependent with the largest band splitting of ~80meV at the zone corner. The simple on-site ferro-orbital ordering is insufficient to reproduce the nontrivial momentum dependence of the band reconstruction. Instead, our results suggest that the nearest-neighbor hopping of dxz and dyz is highly anisotropic in the nematic state, the origin of which holds the key in understanding the nematicity in iron-based superconductors., 21 pages, 4 figures

Superconductivity originates from pairing of electrons. Pairing channel on Fermi surface and pairing glue are thus two pivotal issues for understanding a superconductor. Recently, high-temperature superconductivity over 40 K was found in electron-doped FeSe superconductors including K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe, and 1 monolayer FeSe thin film. However, their pairing mechanism remains controversial. Here, we studied the systematic evolution of electronic structure in potassium-coated FeSe single crystal. The doping level is controlled precisely by in situ evaporating potassium onto the sample surface. We found that the superconductivity emerges when the inter-pocket scattering between two electron pockets is turned on by a Lifshitz transition of Fermi surface. The nematic order suppresses remarkably at the same doping and strong nematic fluctuation remains in a wide doping range of the phase diagram. Our results suggest an underlying correlation among superconductivity, inter-pocket scattering, and nematic fluctuation in electron-doped FeSe superconductors., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

The intriguing role of nematicity in iron-based superconductors, defined as broken rotational symmetry below a characteristic temperature, is an intensely investigated contemporary subject. Nematicity is closely connected to the structural transition, however, it is highly doubtful that the lattice degree of freedom is responsible for its formation, given the accumulating evidence for the observed large anisotropy. Here we combine molecular beam epitaxy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy together to study the nematicity in multilayer FeSe films on SrTiO3. Our results demonstrate direct connection between electronic anisotropy in momentum space and standing waves in real space at atomic scale. The lifting of orbital degeneracy of dxz/dyz bands gives rise to a pair of Dirac cone structures near the zone corner, which causes energy-independent unidirectional interference fringes, observed in real space as standing waves by scattering electrons off C2 domain walls and Se-defects. On the other hand, the formation of C2 nematic domain walls unexpectedly shows no correlation with lattice strain pattern, which is induced by the lattice mismatch between the film and substrate. Our results establish a clean case that the nematicity is driven by electronic rather than lattice degrees of freedom in FeSe films., Comment: After more STM and ARPES measurements, we find the interpretation of the unidirectional interference fringes is not correct. The iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ on the Te-rich side is known to exhibit the strongest electron correlations among the Fe-based superconductors, and is non-superconducting for $x$ < 0.1. In order to understand the origin of such behaviors, we have performed ARPES studies of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4). The obtained mass renormalization factors for different energy bands are qualitatively consistent with DFT + DMFT calculations. Our results provide evidence for strong orbital dependence of mass renormalization, and systematic data which help us to resolve inconsistencies with other experimental data. The unusually strong orbital dependence of mass renormalization in Te-rich Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ arises from the dominant contribution to the Fermi surface of the $d_{xy}$ band, which is the most strongly correlated and may contribute to the suppression of superconductivity.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of BaNi$_2$P$_2$ which shows a superconducting transition at $T_c$ $\sim$ 2.5 K. We observed hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs) around the Brillouin zone center and corner, respectively, and the shapes of the hole FSs dramatically changed with photon energy, indicating strong three-dimensionality. The observed FSs are consistent with band-structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements. The mass enhancement factors estimated in the normal state were $m^*$/$m_b$ $\leq$ 2, indicating weak electron correlation compared to typical iron-pnictide superconductors. An electron-like Fermi surface around the Z point was observed in contrast with BaNi$_2$As$_2$ and may be related to the higher $T_c$ of BaNi$_2$P$_2$., 6 figures

Bulk charge density modulations, recently observed in high critical-temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) cuprate superconductors, coexist with the so-called pseudogap and compete with superconductivity. However, its direct observation has been limited to a narrow doping region in the underdoped regime. Using energy-resolved resonant x-ray scattering we have found evidence for such bulk charge modulations, or soft collective charge modes (soft CCMs), in optimally doped Bi$_{1.5}$Pb$_{0.6}$Sr$_{1.54}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+��}$ (Pb-Bi2212) around the summit of the superconducting dome with momentum transfer $q_{\parallel}\sim0.28$ reciprocal lattice units (r.l.u.) along the Cu-O bond direction. The signal is stronger at $T\simeq T_\mathrm{c}$ than at lower temperatures, thereby confirming a competition between soft CCMs and superconductivity. These results demonstrate that soft CCMs are not constrained to the underdoped regime, suggesting that soft CCMs appear across a large part of the phase diagram of cuprates and are intimately entangled with high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductivity., 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+��}$ (Hg1201) has been shown to be a model cuprate for scattering, optical, and transport experiments, but angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data are still lacking owing to the absence of a charge-neutral cleavage plane. We report on progress in achieving the experimental conditions for which quasiparticles can be observed in the near-nodal region of the Fermi surface. The d-wave superconducting gap is measured and found to have a maximum of 39 meV. At low temperature, a kink is detected in the nodal dispersion at approximately 51 meV below the Fermi level, an energy that is different from other cuprates with comparable T$_c$. The superconducting gap, Fermi surface, and nodal band renormalization measured here provide a crucial momentum-space complement to other experimental probes.

The ability to control resonant properties of individual metamolecule in a metamaterial structure will offer an ultimate freedom for dynamically shaping wavefronts of electromagnetic radiation for applications such as variable aberration corrected planar lenses, dynamic holograms and spatial intensity and phase modulators. Here we report the first demonstration of a metamaterial where resonant properties of every individual metamolecule can be continuously controlled at will thus offering an ultimate freedom in achieving a dynamic control of electromagnetic wavefront of microwave radiation. We call this a Random Access Reconfigurable Metamaterial (RARM). To achieve a RARM we created an array of cavities that were filled with liquid metal in a precise fashion using microfluidic technology. The developed RARM was used provide the first demonstration of a tunable flat lens., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

The momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in the cuprates has been debated, with most experiments reporting a deviation from a simple $d_{x^2-y^2}$ form in the underdoped regime and a few experiments claiming that a simple $d_{x^2-y^2}$ form persists down to the lowest dopings. We affirm that the superconducting gap function in sufficiently underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212) deviates from a simple \textit{d}-wave form near the antinode. This is observed in samples where doping is controlled only by oxygen annealing, in contrast to claims that this effect is only seen in cation-substituted samples. Moreover, a quasiparticle peak is present at the antinode down to p$=$0.08, refuting claims that a deviation from a simple \textit{d}-wave form is a data analysis artifact stemming from difficulty in assessing a gap in the absence of a quasiparticle.

We have studied the electronic structure of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x$=0.08), which fails to become a superconductor in spite of the formal hole doping like Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, by photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). With decreasing temperature, a transition from the paramagnetic phase to the antiferromagnetic phase was clearly observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. XAS results indicated that the substituted Mn atoms form a strongly hybridized ground state. Resonance-photoemission spectra at the Mn $L_{3}$ edge revealed that the Mn 3d partial density of states is distributed over a wide energy range of 2-13 eV below the Fermi level ($E_F$), with little contribution around $E_F$. This indicates that the dopant Mn 3$d$ states are localized in spite of the strong Mn 3d-As $4p$ hybridization and split into the occupied and unoccupied parts due to the on-site Coulomb and exchange interaction. The absence of superconductivity in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ can thus be ascribed both to the absence of carrier doping in the FeAs plane, and to the strong stabilizaiton of the antiferromagnetic order by the Mn impurities.

The isovalent-substituted iron-pnictide superconductor SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ ($x$=0.35) has a slightly higher optimum critical temperature than the similar system BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, and its parent compound SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ has a much higher N\'eel temperature than BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. We have studied the band structure and the Fermi surfaces of optimally-doped SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Three holelike Fermi surfaces (FSs) around (0,0) and two electronlike FSs around ($\pi$,$\pi$) have been observed as in the case of BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. Measurements with different photon energies have revealed that one of the hole FSs is more strongly warped along the $k_{z}$ direction than the corresponding one in BaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, while the electron FSs are almost cylindrical unlike corrugated ones in BaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. Comparison of the ARPES data with first-principles band-structure calculation revealed that the quasiparticle mass renormalization factors are different not only between bands of different orbital character but also between the hole and electron FSs of the same orbital character. By examining nesting conditions between the hole and electron FSs, we conclude that magnetic interactions between FeAs layers rather than FS nesting play an important role in stabilizing the antiferromagnetic order. The insensitivity of superconductivity to the FS nesting can be explained if only the $d_{xy}$ and/or $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals are active in inducing superconductivity or if FS nesting is not important for superconductivity.

We investigate the order parameter dynamics of the stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$, using time-resolved resonant X-ray diffraction. In spite of distinct spin and charge energy scales, the two order parameters' amplitude dynamics are found to be linked together due to strong coupling. Additionally, the vector nature of the spin sector introduces a longer re-orientation time scale which is absent in the charge sector. These findings demonstrate that the correlation linking the symmetry-broken states does not unbind during the non-equilibrium process, and the time scales are not necessarily associated with the characteristic energy scales of individual degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 figures. Relationship between the superconducting gap and the pseudogap has been the subject of controversies. In order to clarify this issue, we have studied the superconducting gap and pseudogap of the high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.14) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Through the analysis of the ARPES spectra above and below Tc, we have identified a superconducting coherence peak even in the anti-nodal region on top of the pseudogap of a larger energy scale. The superconducting peak energy nearly follows the pure d-wave form. The d-wave order parameter \Delta_0 [defined by \Delta(k)=\Delta_0(cos(kxa)-cos(kya)) ] for x=0.10 and 0.14 are nearly the same, \Delta_0 ~ 12-14 meV, leading to strong coupling 2\Delta_0/kB Tc ~ 10. The present result indicates that the pseudogap and the superconducting gap are distinct phenomena and can be described by the "two-gap" scenario., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the hole-overdoped iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2, which shows a low Tc of ~4 K. Most of the observed Fermi surfaces show nearly two-dimensional shapes, while a band near the Fermi level shows a strong dispersion along the kz direction and forms a small three-dimensional hole pocket centered at the Z point, as predicted by band-structure calculation. However, hole Fermi surfaces of yz and zx orbital character centered at the \Gamma point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone are smaller than those predicted by the calculation while the other hole Fermi surfaces of xy orbital character is much larger. Clover-shaped hole Fermi surfaces around the corner of the 2D BZ are also larger than those predicted by the calculation. These observations are consistent with the de Haas-van Alphen measurement and indicate orbital-dependent electron correlation effects. The effective masses of the energy bands show moderate to strong enhancement, partly due to electron correlation and partly due to energy shifts from the calculated band structure., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The interplay between superconductivity and the pseudogap is an important aspect of cuprate physics. However, the nature of the pseudogap remains controversial, in part because different experiments have suggested different gap functions. Here we present a photon-energy-dependence angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on Bi$_{1.5}$Pb$_{0.55}$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+��}$. We find that antinodal ARPES spectra at low photon energies are dominated by background signals which can lead to a misevaluation of the spectral gap size. Once background is properly accounted for, independent of photon energy, the antinodal spectra robustly show two coexisting features at different energies dominantly attributed to the pseudogap and superconductivity, as well as an overall spectral gap which deviates from a simple d-wave form. These results support the idea that the spectral gap is distorted due to the competition between the pseudogap and superconductivity.

We report angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the quantum critical metal Sr3Ru2O7 revealing itinerant Ru 4d-states confined over large parts of the Brillouin zone to an energy range of < 6 meV, nearly three orders of magnitude lower than the bare band width. We show that this energy scale agrees quantitatively with a characteristic thermodynamic energy scale associated with quantum criticality and illustrate how it arises from the hybridization of light and strongly renormalized, heavy quasiparticle bands. For the largest Fermi surface sheet we find a marked k-dependence of the renormalization and show that it correlates with the Ru 4d - O 2p hybridization.

We demonstrate the capability of growing high quality ultrathin films of the topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 using molecular beam epitaxy. Unlike previous growth techniques, which often pin the Fermi energy in the conduction band for ultrathin samples, our samples remain intrinsic bulk insulators. We characterize these films using in-situ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which is a direct probe of bandstructure, and ex-situ atomic force microscopy. We find that the conduction band lies above the Fermi energy, indicating bulk insulating behavior with only the surface states crossing EF . We conclude that thermal cracking of Te and Se in our growth leads to higher quality thin films, paving the way for future improvements in growth of topological insulators.

With first-principles DFT calculations, the interaction between graphene and SiO2 surface has been analyzed by constructing the different configurations based on {\alpha}-quartz and cristobalite structures. The single layer graphene can stay stably on SiO2 surface is explained based on the general consideration of configuration structures of SiO2 surface. It is also found that the oxygen defect in SiO2 surface can shift the Fermi level of graphene down which opens out the mechanism of hole-doping effect of graphene absorbed on SiO2 surface observed in experiments., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the iron-based superconductor PrFeAsO_{0.7} and examined the Fermi surfaces and band dispersions near the Fermi level. Heavily hole-doped electronic states have been observed due to the polar nature of the cleaved surfaces. Nevertheless, we have found that the ARPES spectra basically agree with band dispersions calculated in the local density approximation (LDA) if the bandwidth is reduced by a factor of ~2.5 and then the chemical potential is lowered by ~70 meV. Comparison with previous ARPES results on LaFePO reveals that the energy positions of the d_{3z^2-r^2}- and d_{yz,zx}-derived bands are considerably different between the two materials, which we attribute to the different pnictogen height as predicted by the LDA calculation.

Recent laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies have established the presence of a new kink in the low-energy nodal dispersion of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$+{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212). The energy scale (~8-15 meV) of this kink appears below the maximum of the superconducting gap $\delta_0$. Therefore it is difficult to interpret this feature in terms of the usual coupling to a sharp dispersionless mode. In this paper we examine electron-phonon coupling to the in-plane acoustic phonon branch arising from the modulation of the screened Coulomb potential. We demonstrate that such a coupling has a strong forward scattering peak, and as a consequence, a kink occurs in the dispersion at an energy scale shifted by the local gap $\delta(k)$. In addition, considerations for the reduction of screening with underdoping naturally explains the observed doping dependence of the low-energy kink. These results point to a strong coupling to the acoustic branch which is peaked in the forward scattering direction and has important implications for transport and pairing in the high-T$_c$ cuprates., Comment: 4.5 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to PRL

Knowledge of the gap function is important to understand the pairing mechanism for high-temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) superconductivity. However, Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the cuprates have reported contradictory gap functions, with FT-STS results deviating strongly from a canonical $d_{x^2-y^2}$ form. By applying an "octet model" analysis to autocorrelation ARPES, we reveal that a contradiction occurs because the octet model does not consider the effects of matrix elements and the pseudogap. This reaffirms the canonical $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap around the node, which can be directly determined from ARPES. Further, our study suggests that the FT-STS reported fluctuating superconductivity around the node at far above $T_\mathrm{c}$ is not necessary to explain the existence of the quasiparticle interference, 5 pages

In this supporting material for the main paper (the preceding submission), we show, in addition to the related information for the experiments, additional discussion that cannot fit in the main paper (due to the space constraint). It includes further discussion about our experimental observations, wider implications of our main findings with various reported candidates for the pseudogap order, and a simple mean-field argument that favors interpretations based on a finite-Q order (density wave) for the pseudogap seen by ARPES (whether "the pseudogap order" is a single order or contains multiple ingredients, is an independent, open issue). We also include a detailed simulation section, in which we model different candidates (various density wave/nematic order) for the pseudogap order in simple forms using a mean-field approach, and discuss their partial success as well as limitations in describing the experimental observations. These simulations are based on a tight-binding model with parameters fitted globally (and reasonably well) to the experimental band dispersions (by tracking the maximum of the energy distribution curve), which could be useful for further theoretical explorations on this issue.

We have performed a temperature dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the tri-layer high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor (HTSC) Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+\delta}$ (Bi2223), and have shown that the \textquotedblleft effective\textquotedblright superconducting (SC) gap $\Delta_{\rm{sc}}$ defined at the end point of the Fermi arc and the $T_c$ (= 110 K) approximately satisfies the weak-coupling BCS-relationship 2$\Delta_{\rm{sc}}$ = 4.3$k_{\rm{B}}T_c$. Combining this result with previous ARPES results on single- and double-layer cuprates, we show that the relationship between 2$\Delta_{\rm{sc}}$ = 4.3$k_{\rm{B}}T_c$ holds for various HTSCs. Furthermore, at $T$ $\sim$ $T_c$, the quasi-patricle width at the end point of the Fermi arc is found to coincide with $\Delta_{\rm{sc}}$, consistent with the context of Planckian dissipation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

BN domains are easy to form in the basal plane of graphene due to phase separation. With first-principles DFT calculations, it is demonstrated theoretically that the band gap of graphene can be opened effectively around K (or K') points by doping the small BN domains. It is also found that the random doping with B or N is possible to open a small gap in the Dirac points, except for the modulation of Fermi level. The surface charge which belongs to the $\pi$ states near Dirac points is found to be redistributed locally. The charge redistribution is contributed to the change of localized potential due to the doping effects. This may be the reason that the energy states near Dirac points is just disturbed in the energy region [-0.4eV, 0.4eV] for the doping of BN domain. Thus, we suggest that the band opening induced by the doped BN domain is due to the breaking of localized symmetry of the potential. Doping graphene with BN domains is an effective method to open a band gap with quasi-linear dissipation near Dirac point., Comment: 7 page, 8 figures

Nematicity, defined as broken rotational symmetry, has recently been observed in competing phases proximate to the superconducting phase in the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Similarly, the new iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition (i.e. a broken C4 symmetry) that either precedes or is coincident with a collinear spin density wave (SDW) transition in undoped parent compounds, and superconductivity arises when both transitions are suppressed via doping. Evidence for strong in-plane anisotropy in the SDW state in this family of compounds has been reported by neutron scattering, scanning tunneling microscopy, and transport measurements. Here we present an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of detwinned single crystals of a representative family of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductors, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 in the underdoped region. The crystals were detwinned via application of in-plane uniaxial stress, enabling measurements of single domain electronic structure in the orthorhombic state. At low temperatures, our results clearly demonstrate an in-plane electronic anisotropy characterized by a large energy splitting of two orthogonal bands with dominant dxz and dyz character, which is consistent with anisotropy observed by other probes. For compositions x>0, for which the structural transition (TS) precedes the magnetic transition (TSDW), an anisotropic splitting is observed to develop above TSDW, indicating that it is specifically associated with TS. For unstressed crystals, the band splitting is observed close to TS, whereas for stressed crystals the splitting is observed to considerably higher temperatures, revealing the presence of a surprisingly large in-plane nematic susceptibility in the electronic structure., final version published in PNAS, including supplementary information

We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely drives this order. The heavily-overdoped Fe-doped LSCO thus represents the first plausible example of the long-sought "itinerant-spin extreme" of cuprates, where the spins of itinerant doped holes define the magnetic ordering ground state. This finding complements the current picture of cuprate spin physics that highlights the predominant role of localized spins at lower dopings. The demonstrated set of methods could potentially apply to studying hidden density-wave instabilities of other "nested" materials on the verge of density wave ordering., and discussion revised; to appear in Phys. Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations and Angle Resolved PhotoEmission Spectroscopy (ARPES) are used to probe the Fermi surface of single crystals of Bi2Se3. We find that SdH and ARPES probes quantitatively agree on measurements of the effective mass and bulk band dispersion. In high carrier density samples, the two probes also agree in the exact position of the Fermi level EF, but for lower carrier density samples discrepancies emerge in the position of EF. In particular, SdH reveals a bulk three-dimensional Fermi surface for samples with carrier densities as low as 10^17cm-3. We suggest a simple mechanism to explain these differences and discuss consequences for existing and future transport studies of topological insulators., Comment: 5 mages, 5 figures

We have performed several high pressure electrical resistance experiments on Bi1.98Sr2.06Y0.68Cu2O8, an insulating parent compound of the high-Tc Bi2212 family of copper oxide superconductors. We find a resistive anomaly, a downturn at low temperature, that onsets with applied pressure in the 20-40 kbar range. Through both resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, we identify this anomaly as a signature of induced superconductivity. Resistance to higher pressures decreases Tc, giving a maximum of 10 K. The higher pressure measurements exhibit a strong sensitivity to the hydrostaticity of the pressure environment. We make comparisons to the pressure induced superconductivity now ubiquitous in the iron arsenides., 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B

The improved resolution of laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) allows reliable access to fine structures in the spectrum. We present a systematic, doping-dependent study of a recently discovered low-energy kink in the nodal dispersion of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212), which demonstrates the ubiquity and robustness of this kink in underdoped Bi-2212. The renormalization of the nodal velocity due to this kink becomes stronger with underdoping, revealing that the nodal Fermi velocity is non-universal, in contrast to assumed phenomenology. This is used together with laser-ARPES measurements of the gap velocity, v2, to resolve discrepancies with thermal conductivity measurements., Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

We have determined the electron-coupling spectrum of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra by two deconvolution-free robust methods. As hole concentration decreases, the coupling spectral weight at low energies ~130 meV decreases leading to a crossover of dominant coupling excitation between them. Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of sufficiently strong low-energy coupling, {\lambda}LE ~ 1, in underdoped system.

La-doped and Y-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) compounds Bi2Sr2-xLax(Ca,Y)Cu2O8+d, which range from the insulator to the deeply underdoped superconductor, have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have observed that the lower Hubbard band (LHB) of the parent insulator is gradually shifted upward with doping without significantly changing the band dispersions, which implies a downward shift of the chemical potential with hole doping. This behaviour is analogous to Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d (Bi2201) and Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 (Na-CCOC) but is different from La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO), where the LHB stays well below the chemical potential and does not move while its intensity quickly diminishes in the underdoped region., Comment: Submitted to PRB

We have performed an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of lightly-doped to underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) untwinned single crystals and a core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study of YBCO single and polycrystals. In the zone diagonal (nodal) direction, dispersive quasi-particle (QP) features crossing the Fermi level were observed down to the hole concentration of ~ 4%, which explains the metallic transport of the lightly-doped YBCO. The chemical potential shift estimated from XPS was more rapid than in the Bi2212 cuprates. Upon hole doping, very rapid spectral weight transfer from high binding energies to the QP feature, even faster than La2-xSrxCuO4, was observed., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

In this paper we present a review of bosonic renormalization effects on electronic carriers observed from angle-resolved photoemission spectra in the cuprates. We specifically discuss the viewpoint that these renormalizations represent coupling of the electrons to the lattice, and review how the wide range of materials dependence, such as the number of CuO$_2$ layers, and the doping dependence can be straightforwardly understood as arising due to novel electron-phonon coupling., 9 pages and 6 figures.
