1. Nature of Striation in 21 cm Channel Maps: Velocity Caustics

Abstract: The alignment of striated intensity structures in thin neutral hydrogen (HI) spectroscopic channels with Galactic magnetic fields has been observed. However, the origin and nature of these striations are still debatable. Some studies suggest that the striations result solely from real cold-density filaments without considering the role of turbulent velocity fields, i.e., the velocity caustics effect in shaping the channel's intensity distribution. To determine the relative contribution of density and velocity in forming the striations in channel maps, we analyze synthetic observations of channel maps obtained with simulations that represent realistic magnetized multi-phase HI. We vary the thickness of the channel maps and apply the Velocity Decomposition Algorithm to separate the velocity and density contributions. In parallel, we analyze GALFA HI observations and compare the results. Our analysis shows that the thin channels are dominated by velocity contribution, and velocity caustics mainly generate the HI striations. We show that velocity caustics can cause a correlation between unsharp-masked HI structures and far-infrared emission. We demonstrate that the linear HI fibers revealed by the Rolling Hough Transform (RHT) in thin velocity channels originate from velocity caustics. As the thickness of channel maps increases, the relative contribution of density to fluctuations in channel maps also increases. As a result, more RHT-detected fibers tend to be perpendicular to the magnetic field. Conversely, the alignment with the magnetic field is the most prominent in thin channels. Abstract: The mean plane-of-sky magnetic field strength is traditionally obtained from the combination of polarization and spectroscopic data using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) technique. However, we identify the major problem of the DCF to be its disregard of the anisotropic character of MHD turbulence. On the basis of the modern MHD turbulence theory we introduce a new way of obtaining magnetic field strength from observations. Unlike the DCF, the new technique uses not the dispersion of the polarization angle and line of sight velocities, but increments of these quantities given by the structure functions. To address the variety of the astrophysical conditions for which our technique can be applied, we consider the turbulence in both media with magnetic pressure larger than the gas pressure corresponding e.g. to molecular and the gas pressure larger than the magnetic pressure corresponding to the warm neutral medium. We provide general expressions for arbitrary admixture of Alfv\'en, slow and fast modes in these media and consider in detail the particular cases relevant to diffuse media and molecular clouds. We successfully test our results using synthetic observations obtained from MHD turbulence simulations. We demonstrate that our Differential Measure Approach (DMA), unlike the DCF, can be used to measure the distribution of magnetic field strengths, can provide magnetic field measurements with limited data and is much more stable in the presence of large scale variations induces of non-turbulent nature. Abstract: In modern cosmology, many efforts have been put to detect primordial B-mode of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization from the gravitational waves generated during inflation. Considering the foreground dust contamination of microwave polarization maps, it is essential to obtain a precise prediction for polarization in dust emission. In this work, we show a new method to produce synthetic maps of dust polarization in magnetized turbulent ISM from more abundant high-resolution HI data. By using Velocity Channel Gradient (VChG) technique, we are able to predict both direction and degree of dust polarization by investigating spectroscopic HI information in position-position-velocity (PPV) space. We applied our approach to The Galactic Arecibo L-band feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) data, and find a good correspondence between synthesized maps and PLANCK's polarization measurements at 353 GHz., 15 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract: The upcoming WEAVE-QSO survey will target a high density of quasars over a large area, enabling the reconstruction of the 3D density field through Lyman-$\alpha$ tomography over unprecedented volumes smoothed on intermediate scales ($\approx$ 16 Mpc/$h$). We produce mocks of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest using LyMAS, and reconstruct the 3D density field between sightlines through Wiener filtering in a configuration compatible with the future WEAVE-QSO observations. The fidelity of the reconstruction is assessed by measuring one- and two-point statistics from the distribution of critical points in the cosmic web. In addition, initial Lagrangian statistics are predicted from first principles, and measurements of the connectivity of the cosmic web are performed. The reconstruction captures well the expected features in the auto- and cross-correlations of the critical points. This remains true after a realistic noise is added to the synthetic spectra, even though sparsity of sightlines introduces systematics, especially in the cross-correlations of points with mixed signature. Specifically, for walls and filaments, the most striking clustering features could be measured with up to 4 sigma of significance with a WEAVE-QSO-like survey. Moreover, the connectivity of each peak identified in the reconstructed field is globally consistent with its counterpart in the original field, indicating that the reconstruction preserves the geometry of the density field not only statistically, but also locally. Abstract: Focusing on both small separations and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation scales, the cosmic evolution of the clustering properties of peak, void, wall, and filament-type critical points is measured using two-point correlation functions in $\Lambda$CDM dark matter simulations as a function of their relative rarity. A qualitative comparison to the corresponding theory for Gaussian Random fields allows us to understand the following observed features: i) the appearance of an exclusion zone at small separation, whose size depends both on rarity and on the signature (\ie the number of negative eigenvalues) of the critical points involved; ii) the amplification of the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation bump with rarity and its reversal for cross-correlations involving negatively biased critical points; iii) the orientation-dependent small-separation divergence of the cross-correlations of peaks and filaments (voids and walls) which reflects the relative loci of such points in the filament's (wall's) eigenframe. The most significant features of the correlations are tabulated. The (cross-) correlations involving the most non-linear critical points (peaks, voids) display significant variation with redshift, while those involving less non-linear critical points seem mostly insensitive to redshift evolution, which should prove advantageous to model. The relative distances to the maxima of the peak-to-wall and peak-to-void over that of the peak-to-filament cross-correlation are in ratios of $\sim\sqrt{2}$ and $\sim\sqrt{3}$, respectively which could be interpreted as an indication of the cosmic crystal being on average close to a cubic lattice. The insensitivity to redshift evolution suggests that the absolute and relative clustering of critical points could become a topologically robust alternative to standard clustering techniques when analyzing upcoming large scale surveys such as Euclid or LSST., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables, submitted to MNRAS

6. Velocity Centroids Anisotropy and the Signature of different MHD Modes in the Turbulent ISM

Abstract: Magnetic turbulence is anisotropic as the directions of motion are constrained by the magnetic field. Such anisotropy can be observed in velocity centroids obtained from spectroscopic observations. We use magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations to produce synthetic spectroscopic observations (position-position-velocity data) and study the anisotropy in the structure function of velocity centroid maps. We decomposed the velocity in the simulations into Alfv\'en, slow and fast-modes and studied how each of them contribute to the observed anisotropy. We found that when the angle between the line of sight and the mean magnetic field is large the Alfv\'en-mode dominates the observed anisotropy, while for smaller angles the anisotropy is not large enough to be used to probe the magnetization of the media, and it is dominated by the slow-mode. Abstract: The merging rate of cosmic structures is computed, relying on the Ansatz that they can be predicted in the initial linear density field from the coalescence of critical points with increasing smoothing scale, used here as a proxy for cosmic time. Beyond the mergers of peaks with saddle points (a proxy for halo mergers), we consider the coalescence and nucleation of all sets of critical points, including wall-saddle to filament-saddle and wall-saddle to minima (a proxy for filament and void mergers respectively), as they impact the geometry of galactic infall, and in particular filament disconnection. Analytical predictions of the one-point statistics are validated against multiscale measurements in 2D and 3D realisations of Gaussian random fields (the corresponding code being available upon request) and compared qualitatively to cosmological $N$-body simulations at early times ($z\geq 10$) and large scales ($\geq 5\, \mathrm{Mpc}/h$). The rate of filament coalescence is compared to the merger rate of haloes and the two-point clustering of these events is computed, along with their cross-correlations with critical points. These correlations are qualitatively consistent with the preservation of the connectivity of dark matter haloes, and the impact of the large scale structures on assembly bias. The destruction rate of haloes and voids as a function of mass and redshift is quantified down to $z=0$ for a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. Abstract: We investigate the impact of the number of filaments connected to the nodes of the cosmic web on the physical properties of their galaxies using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We compare these measurements to the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations Horizon-(no)AGN and Simba. We find that more massive galaxies are more connected, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions and measurements in dark matter only simulation. The star formation activity and morphology of observed galaxies both display some dependence on the connectivity of the cosmic web at fixed stellar mass: less star forming and less rotation supported galaxies also tend to have higher connectivity. These results qualitatively hold both for observed and virtual galaxies, and can be understood given that the cosmic web is the main source of fuel for galaxy growth. The simulations show the same trends at fixed halo mass, suggesting that the geometry of filamentary infall impacts galaxy properties beyond the depth of the local potential well. Based on simulations, it is also found that AGN feedback is key in reversing the relationship between stellar mass and connectivity at fixed halo mass. Abstract: Recent Planck observations have revealed some of the important statistical properties of synchrotron and dust polarisation, namely, the $B$ to $E$ mode power and temperature-$E$ (TE) mode cross-correlation. In this paper, we extend our analysis in Kandel et al. (2017) that studied $B$ to $E$ mode power ratio for polarised dust emission to include TE cross-correlation and develop an analogous formalism for synchrotron signal, all using a realistic model of magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence. Our results suggest that the Planck results for both synchrotron and dust polarisation can be understood if the turbulence in the Galaxy is sufficiently sub-Alfv\'enic. Abstract: Recent Planck observations of dust polarization in the Galaxy have revealed that the power in $E$ mode is twice that in $B$ mode. Caldwell et. al. have formulated a theoretical model in the context of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and found it problematic to account for this result. In particular, they concluded that there is a very narrow range of theoretical parameters that could account for the observation. This poses a problem of whether the accepted description of MHD turbulence can apply to the interstellar medium. We revisit the problem and demonstrate that MHD turbulence corresponding to the high galactic latitudes range of Alfv\'en Mach numbers, i.e. $M_A\lesssim 0.5$, can successfully explain the available results for the $E$ to $B$ mode ratio., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS Letters. 5 pages, 3 figures

11. Effects of dust absorption on spectroscopic studies of turbulence

Abstract: We study the effect of dust absorption on the recovery velocity and density spectra as well as on the anisotropies of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence using the Velocity Channel Analysis (VCA), Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS) and Velocity Centroids. The dust limits volume up to an optical depth of unity. We show that in the case of the emissivity proportional to the density of emitters, the effects of random density get suppressed for strong dust absorption intensity variations arise from the velocity fluctuations only. However, for the emissivity proportional to squared density, both density and velocity fluctuations affect the observed intensities. We predict a new asymptotic regime for the spectrum of fluctuations for large scales exceeding the physical depths to unit optical depth. The spectrum gets shallower by unity in this regime. In addition, the dust absorption removes the degeneracy resulted in the universal $K^{-3}$ spectrum of intensity fluctuations of self-absorbing medium reported by Lazarian \& Pogosyan. We show that the predicted result is consistent with the available HII region emission data. We find that for sub-Alfv��nic and trans-Alfv��nic turbulence one can get the information about both the magnetic field direction and the fundamental Alfv��n, fast and slow modes that constitute MHD turbulence., Published in MNRAS, minor changes to match the published version

12. Comment on Clark et al. (2019) 'The Physical Nature of Neutral Hydrogen Intensity Structure'

Abstract: A recent publication by Clark et.al (2019, CX19) uses both GALFA-HI observational data and numerical simulations to address the nature of intensity fluctuations in Position-Position-Velocity (PPV) space. The study questions the validity and applicability of the statistical theory of PPV space fluctuations formulated in Lazarian & Pogosyan (2000, LP00) to HI gas and concludes that $"${\it a significant reassessment of many observational and theoretical studies of turbulence in HI}$"$. This implies that dozens of papers that used LP00 theory to explore interstellar turbulence as well as the ongoing research based on LP00 theory are in error. This situation motivates the urgency of our public response. In our Comment we explain why we believe the criticism in CX19 is based on the incorrect understanding of the LP00 theory. In particular, we illustrate that the correlation between PPV slices and dust emissions in CX19 does not properly reveal the relative importance of velocity and density fluctuations in velocity channel maps. While CX19 provides an explanation of the change of the spectral index with respect to the thickness of PPV slice based on the two-phase nature of H1 gas, we failed to see any observational support for this idea. On the contrary, we show that the observations both in two-phase HI and one phase CO show similar results. Moreover, the observed change is in good agreement with LP00 predictions and spectral indexes of velocity and density spectra that are obtained following LP00 procedures are in good agreement with the numerically confirmed expectations of compressible MHD turbulence theory. In short, we could not find any justification of the criticism of LP00 theory that is provided in CX19. On the contrary, our analysis testifies that both available observational and numerical data agree well with the predictions of LP00 theory., 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The kinematic analysis of dark matter and hydrodynamical simulations suggests that the vorticity in large-scale structure is mostly confined to, and predominantly aligned with their filaments, with an excess of probability of 20 per cent to have the angle between vorticity and filaments direction lower than 60 degrees relative to random orientations. The cross sections of these filaments are typically partitioned into four quadrants with opposite vorticity sign, arising from multiple flows, originating from neighbouring walls. The spins of halos embedded within these filaments are consistently aligned with this vorticity for any halo mass, with a stronger alignment for the most massive structures up to an excess of probability of 165 per cent. On large scales, adiabatic/cooling hydrodynamical simulations display the same vorticity in the gas as in the dark matter. The global geometry of the flow within the cosmic web is therefore qualitatively consistent with a spin acquisition for smaller halos induced by this large-scale coherence, as argued in Codis et al. (2012). In effect, secondary anisotropic infall (originating from the vortex-rich filament within which these lower-mass halos form) dominates the angular momentum budget of these halos. The transition mass from alignment to orthogonality is related to the size of a given multi-flow region with a given polarity. Abstract: The role of the cosmic web in shaping galaxy properties is investigated in the GAMA spectroscopic survey in the redshift range $0.03 \leq z \leq 0.25$. The stellar mass, $u - r$ dust corrected colour and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of galaxies are analysed as a function of their distances to the 3D cosmic web features, such as nodes, filaments and walls, as reconstructed by DisPerSE. Significant mass and type/colour gradients are found for the whole population, with more massive and/or passive galaxies being located closer to the filament and wall than their less massive and/or star-forming counterparts. Mass segregation persists among the star-forming population alone. The red fraction of galaxies increases when closing in on nodes, and on filaments regardless of the distance to nodes. Similarly, the star-forming population reddens (or lowers its sSFR) at fixed mass when closing in on filament, implying that some quenching takes place. Comparable trends are also found in the state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. These results suggest that on top of stellar mass and large-scale density, the traceless component of the tides from the anisotropic large-scale environment also shapes galactic properties. An extension of excursion theory accounting for filamentary tides provides a qualitative explanation in terms of anisotropic assembly bias: at a given mass, the accretion rate varies with the orientation and distance to filaments. Abstract: Cosmic connectivity and multiplicity, i.e. the number of filaments globally or locally connected to a given cluster is a natural probe of the growth of structure and in particular of the nature of dark energy. It is also a critical ingredient driving the assembly history of galaxies as it controls mass and angular momentum accretion. The connectivity of the cosmic web is investigated here via the persistent skeleton. This tool identifies topologically the set of ridges of the cosmic landscape which allows us to investigate in details how the nodes of the cosmic web are connected together. When applied to Gaussian random fields, it is found that on average the nodes are connected to exactly $\kappa=4$ neighbours in two dimensions and ~6.1 in three dimensions. Investigating spatial dimensions up to d=11, typical departures from a cubic lattice $\kappa=2d$ are shown to scale like the power 7/4 of the dimension. These numbers strongly depend on the height of the peaks: the higher the peak the larger the connectivity. Locally, the number of filaments sticking out from a node is not equal to its number of connections. At small distance, the peak has an ellipsoidal shape so that only two filaments emerge. Further away, filaments are subdivided at bifurcation points. At the resolution of the maps, the local number of filaments is 3 on average in 2D and 4 in 3D, depending on the height of the peak. Predictions from first principles based on peak theory are shown to reproduce well the connectivity and multiplicity of Gaussian random fields and cosmological simulations. As an illustration, this connectivity is quantified in galaxy lensing convergence maps and large dark haloes catalogues. As a function of redshift and scale the mean connectivity decreases in a cosmology dependent way. Abstract: In this work we effectively calculated the two-dimensional Minkowski functionals for cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps generated by single field models of inflation with a standard kinetic term. We started with calculation of the bispectrum of initial perturbations and then calculated the two-dimensional configuration space cubic moments for temperature fluctuations. These cubic moments give rise to first order non-Gaussian correction terms to the Minkowski functionals. Thus, we developed a robust mechanism to predict the amount of non-Gaussianity generated by inflation in the CMB temperature maps using Minkowski functionals., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1506.01212

Abstract: The new cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps from Planck provide the highest-quality full-sky view of the surface of last scattering available to date. This allows us to detect possible departures from the standard model of a globally homogeneous and isotropic cosmology on the largest scales. We search for correlations induced by a possible non-trivial topology with a fundamental domain intersecting, or nearly intersecting, the last scattering surface (at comoving distance χrec), both via a direct search for matched circular patterns at the intersections and by an optimal likelihood search for specific topologies. For the latter we consider flat spaces with cubic toroidal (T3), equal-sided chimney (T2) and slab (T1) topologies, three multi-connected spaces of constant positive curvature (dodecahedral, truncated cube and octahedral) and two compact negative-curvature spaces. These searches yield no detection of the compact topology with the scale below the diameter of the last scattering surface. For most compact topologies studied the likelihood maximized over the orientation of the space relative to the observed map shows some preference for multi-connected models just larger than the diameter of the last scattering surface. Since this effect is also present in simulated realizations of isotropic maps, we interpret it as the inevitable alignment of mild anisotropic correlations with chance features in a single sky realization; such a feature can also be present, in milder form, when the likelihood is marginalized over orientations. Thus marginalized, the limits on the radius i of the largest sphere inscribed in topological domain (at log-likelihood-ratio Δln ' >-5 relative to a simply-connected flat Planck best-fit model) are: in a flat Universe, i> 0.92χrec for the T3 cubic torus; i> 0.71χrec for the T2 chimney; i> 0.50χrec for the T1 slab; and in a positively curved Universe, i> 1.03χrec for the dodecahedral space; i> 1.0χrec for the truncated cube; and i> 0.89χrec for the octahedral space. The limit for a wider class of topologies, i.e., those predicting matching pairs of back-to-back circles, among them tori and the three spherical cases listed above, coming from the matched-circles search, is i> 0.94χrec at 99% confidence level. Similar limits apply to a wide, although not exhaustive, range of topologies. We also perform a Bayesian search for an anisotropic global Bianchi VIIh geometry. In the non-physical setting where the Bianchi cosmology is decoupled from the standard cosmology, Planck data favour the inclusion of a Bianchi component with a Bayes factor of at least 1.5 units of log-evidence. Indeed, the Bianchi pattern is quite efficient at accounting for some of the large-scale anomalies found in Planck data. However, the cosmological parameters that generate this pattern are in strong disagreement with those found from CMB anisotropy data alone. In the physically motivated setting where the Bianchi parameters are coupled and fitted simultaneously with the standard cosmological parameters, we find no evidence for a Bianchi VIIh cosmology and constrain the vorticity of such models to (ω/H)0< 8.1 × 10-10 (95% confidence level)., The development of Planck has been supported by: ESA; CNES and CNRS/INSU-IN2P3-INP (France); ASI, CNR, and INAF (Italy); NASA and DoE (USA); STFC and UKSA (UK); CSIC, MICINN and JA (Spain); Tekes, AoF and CSC (Finland); DLR and MPG (Germany); CSA (Canada); DTU Space (Denmark); SER/SSO (Switzerland); RCN (Norway); SFI (Ireland); FCT/MCTES (Portugal); and PRACE (EU).

Abstract: The European Space Agency’s Planck satellite, dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched 14 May 2009 and has been scanning the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously since 12 August 2009. In March 2013, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the initial cosmology products based on the first 15.5 months of Planck data, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the mission and its performance, the processing, analysis, and characteristics of the data, the scientific results, and the science data products and papers in the release. The science products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and diffuse extragalactic foregrounds, a catalogue of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources, and a list of sources detected through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data and a lensing likelihood are described. Scientific results include robust support for the standard six-parameter ΛCDM model of cosmology and improved measurements of its parameters, including a highly significant deviation from scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum. The Planck values for these parameters and others derived from them are significantly different from those previously determined. Several large-scale anomalies in the temperature distribution of the CMB, first detected by WMAP, are confirmed with higher confidence. Planck sets new limits on the number and mass of neutrinos, and has measured gravitational lensing of CMB anisotropies at greater than 25σ. Planck finds no evidence for non-Gaussianity in the CMB. Planck’s results agree well with results from the measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations. Planck finds a lower Hubble constant than found in some more local measures. Some tension is also present between the amplitude of matter fluctuations (σ8) derived from CMB data and that derived from Sunyaev-Zeldovich data. The Planck and WMAP power spectra are offset from each other by an average level of about 2% around the first acoustic peak. Abstract: Starting from a very accurate model for density-in-cells statistics of dark matter based on large deviation theory, a bias model for the tracer density in spheres is formulated. It adopts a mean bias relation based on a quadratic bias model to relate the log-densities of dark matter to those of mass-weighted dark haloes in real and redshift space. The validity of the parametrised bias model is established using a parametrisation-independent extraction of the bias function. This average bias model is then combined with the dark matter PDF, neglecting any scatter around it: it nevertheless yields an excellent model for densities-in-cells statistics of mass tracers that is parametrised in terms of the underlying dark matter variance and three bias parameters. The procedure is validated on measurements of both the one and two point statistics of subhalo densities in the state-of-the-art Horizon Run 4 simulation showing excellent agreement for measured dark matter variance and bias parameters. Finally, it is demonstrated that this formalism allows for a joint estimation of the nonlinear dark matter variance and the bias parameters using solely the statistics of subhaloes. Having verified that galaxy counts in hydrodynamical simulations sampled on a scale of 10 Mpc/h closely resemble those of subhaloes, this work provides important steps towards making theoretical predictions for density-in-cells statistics applicable to upcoming galaxy surveys like Euclid or WFIRST., 14 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Simple parameter-free analytic bias functions for the two-point correlation of densities in spheres at large separation are presented. These bias functions generalize the so-called Kaiser bias to the mildly non-linear regime for arbitrary density contrasts. The derivation is carried out in the context of large deviation statistics while relying on the spherical collapse model. A logarithmic transformation provides a saddle approximation which is valid for the whole range of densities and shown to be accurate against the 30 Gpc cube state-of-the-art Horizon Run 4 simulation. Special configurations of two concentric spheres that allow to identify peaks are employed to obtain the conditional bias and a proxy to BBKS extrema correlation functions. These analytic bias functions should be used jointly with extended perturbation theory to predict two-point clustering statistics as they capture the non-linear regime of structure formation at the percent level down to scales of about 10 Mpc/h at redshift 0. Conversely, the joint statistics also provide us with optimal dark matter two-point correlation estimates which can be applied either universally to all spheres or to a restricted set of biased (over- or underdense) pairs. Based on a simple fiducial survey, this estimator is shown to perform five times better than usual two-point function estimators. Abstract: Filaments of the cosmic web drive spin acquisition of disc galaxies. The point process of filament-type saddle represent best this environment and can be used to revisit the Tidal Torque Theory in the context of an anisotropic peak (saddle) background split. The constrained misalignment between the tidal tensor and the Hessian of the density field generated in the vicinity of filament saddle points simply explains the corresponding transverse and longitudinal point-reflection symmetric geometry of spin distribution. It predicts in particular an azimuthal orientation of the spins of more massive galaxies and spin alignment with the filament for less massive galaxies. Abstract: We analyze the BOOMERanG 2003 (B03) 145 GHz temperature map to constrain the amplitude of a non Gaussian, primordial contribution to CMB fluctuations. We perform a pixel space analysis restricted to a portion of the map chosen in view of high sensitivity, very low foreground contamination and tight control of systematic effects. We set up an estimator based on the three Minkowski functionals which relies on high quality simulated data, including non Gaussian CMB maps. Abstract: We describe the implications of cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations and galaxy and cluster surveys of large scale structure (LSS) for theories of cosmic structure formation, especially emphasizing the recent Boomerang and Maxima CMB balloon experiments. The inflation-based cosmic structure formation paradigm we have been operating with for two decades has never been in better shape. Here we primarily focus on a simplified inflation parameter set, {omega_b,omega_{cdm},Omega_{tot}, Omega_\Lambda,n_s,\tau_C, \sigma_8}. Combining all of the current CMB+LSS data points to the remarkable conclusion that the local Hubble patch we can access has little mean curvature (Omega_{tot}=1.08\pm 0.06) and the initial fluctuations were nearly scale invariant (n_s=1.03\pm 0.08), both predictions of (non-baroque) inflation theory. The baryon density is found to be slightly larger than that preferred by independent Big Bang Nucleosynthesis estimates (omega_b=0.030\pm 0.005 cf. 0.019\pm 0.002). The CDM density is in the expected range (omega_{cdm}=0.17 \pm 0.02). Even stranger is the CMB+LSS evidence that the density of the universe is dominated by unclustered energy akin to the cosmological constant (Omega_\Lambda=0.66\pm 0.06), at the same level as that inferred from high redshift supernova observations. Abstract: We use cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to show that a significant fraction of the gas in high redshift rare massive halos falls nearly radially to their very centre on extremely short timescales. This process results in the formation of very compact bulges with specific angular momentum a factor 5-30$smaller than the average angular momentum of the baryons in the whole halo. Such low angular momentum originates both from segregation and effective cancellation when the gas flows to the centre of the halo along well defined cold filamentary streams. These filaments penetrate deep inside the halo and connect to the bulge from multiple rapidly changing directions. Structures falling in along the filaments (satellite galaxies) or formed by gravitational instabilities triggered by the inflow (star clusters) further reduce the angular momentum of the gas in the bulge. Finally, the fraction of gas radially falling to the centre appears to increase with the mass of the halo; we argue that this is most likely due to an enhanced cancellation of angular momentum in rarer halos which are fed by more isotropically distributed cold streams. Such an increasingly efficient funnelling of low-angular momentum gas to the centre of very massive halos at high redshift may account for the rapid pace at which the most massive supermassive black holes grow to reach observed masses around $10^9$M$_\odot$ at an epoch when the Universe is barely 1 Gyr old., 17 pages, 13 figures, MNRAS accepted

Abstract: State-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations show that gas inflow through the virial sphere of dark matter halos is focused (i.e. has a preferred inflow direction), consistent (i.e. its orientation is steady in time) and amplified (i.e. the amplitude of its advected specific angular momentum increases with time). We explain this to be a consequence of the dynamics of the cosmic web within the neighbourhood of the halo, which produces steady, angular momentum rich, filamentary inflow of cold gas. On large scales, the dynamics within neighbouring patches drives matter out of the surrounding voids, into walls and filaments before it finally gets accreted onto virialised dark matter halos. As these walls/filaments constitute the boundaries of asymmetric voids, they acquire a net transverse motion, which explains the angular momentum rich nature of the later infall which comes from further away. Abstract: We study possibility of obtaining velocity spectra by studying turbulence in an optically thick medium using velocity centroids (VCs).We find that the regime of universal, i.e. independent of underlying turbulence statistics, fluctuations discovered originally within the velocity channel analysis (VCA) carries over to the statistics of VCs. In other words, for large absorptions the VC lose their ability to reflect the spectra of turbulence. Combining our present study with the earlier studies of centroids in Esquivel & Lazarian, we conclude that centroids are applicable for studies subsonic/transsonic turbulence for the range of scales that is limited by the absorption effects. We also consider VCs based on absorption lines and define the range of their applicability. We address the problem of analytical description of spectra and anisotropies of fluctuations that are available through studies using VC. We obtain spectra and anisotropy of VC fluctuations arising from Alfv��n, slow and fast modes that constitute the compressible MHD cascade to address the issue of anisotropy of VC statistics, and show how the VC anisotropy can be used to find the media magnetization as well as to identify and separate contributions from Alfv��n, slow and fast modes. Our study demonstrates that VCs are complementary to the tools provided by the VCA. Abstract: In the conference presentation we have reviewed the theory of non-Gaussian geometrical measures for the 3D Cosmic Web of the matter distribution in the Universe and 2D sky data, such as Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps that was developed in a series of our papers. The theory leverages symmetry of isotropic statistics such as Minkowski functionals and extrema counts to develop post- Gaussian expansion of the statistics in orthogonal polynomials of invariant descriptors of the field, its first and second derivatives. The application of the approach to 2D fields defined on a spherical sky was suggested, but never rigorously developed. In this paper we present such development treating effects of the curvature and finiteness of the spherical space $S_2$ exactly, without relying on the flat-sky approximation. Abstract: We extend the velocity channel analysis (VCA), introduced by Lazarian & Pogosyan, of the intensity fluctuations in the velocity slices of position-position-velocity (PPV) spectroscopic data from Doppler broadened lines to study statistical anisotropy of the underlying velocity and density that arises in a turbulent medium from the presence of magnetic field. In particular, we study analytically how the anisotropy of the intensity correlation in the channel maps changes with the thickness of velocity channels. In agreement with the earlier VCA studies we find that the anisotropy in the thick channels reflects the anisotropy of the density field, while the relative contribution of density and velocity fluctuations to the thin velocity channels depends on the density spectral slope. We show that the anisotropies arising from Alfven, slow and fast magnetohydrodynamical modes are different, in particular, the anisotropy in PPV created by fast modes is opposite to that created by Alfven and slow modes, and this can be used to separate their contributions. We successfully compare our results with the recent numerical study of the PPV anisotropies measured with synthetic observations. We also extend our study to the medium with self-absorption as well as to the case of absorption lines. Abstract: We study Minkowski Functionals as probes of primordial non-Gaussianity in the Cosmic Microwave Background, specifically for the estimate of the primordial `local' bi-spectrum parameter f_NL, with instrumental parameters which should be appropriate for the Planck experiment. We use a maximum likelihood approach, which we couple with various filtering methods and test thoroughly for convergence. We included the effect of inhomogeneous noise as well as astrophysical biases induced by point sources and by the contamination from the Galaxy. We find that, when Wiener filtered maps are used (rather than simply smoothed with Gaussian), the expected error on the measurement of f_NL should be as small as \Delta f_NL \simeq 10 when combining the 3 channels at 100, 143 and 217 GHz in the Planck extended mission setup. This result is fairly insensitive to the non homogeneous nature of the noise, at least for realistic hit-maps expected from Planck. We then estimate the bias induced on the measurement of f_NL by point sources in those 3 channels. With the appropriate masking of the bright sources, this bias can be reduced to a negligible level in the 100 and 143 GHz channels. Abstract: In this work the detailed geometrical description of all possible orthogonal and nonorthogonal systems of coordinates, which allow separation of variables of two-dimensional Helmholtz equation is given as for two-sheeted (upper sheet) $H_2$, either for one-sheeted ${\tilde H}_2$ hyperboloids. It was proven that only five types of orthogonal systems of coordinates, namely: pseudo-spherical, equidistant, horiciclic, elliptic-parabolic and elliptic system cover one-sheeted ${\tilde H}_2$ hyperboloid completely. For other systems on ${\tilde H}_2$ hyperboloid, well defined In\"on\"u--Wigner contraction into pseudo-euclidean plane $E_{1,1}$ does not exist. Nevertheless, we have found the relation between all nine orthogonal and three nonorthogonal separable systems of coordinates on the one-sheeted hyperboloid and eight orthogonal plus three nonorthogonal ones on pseudo-euclidean plane $E_{1,1}$. We could not identify the counterpart of parabolic coordinate of type II on $E_{1,1}$ among the nine separable coordinates on hyperboloid ${\tilde H}_2$, but we have defined one possible candidate having such a property in the contraction limit. In the light of contraction limit we have understood the origin of the existence of an additional invariant operator which does not correspond to any separation system of coordinates for the Helmholtz equation on pseudo-euclidean plane $E_{1,1}$. Finally we have reexamine all contraction limits from the nine separable systems on two-sheeted $H_2$ hyperboloid to Euclidean plane $E_2$ and found out some previously unreported transitions., Comment: 65 pages, 46 figures

Abstract: The geometry of the cosmic web drives in part the spin acquisition of galaxies. This can be explained in a Lagrangian framework, by identifying the specific long-wavelength correlations within the primordial Gaussian random field which are relevant to spin acquisition. Tidal Torque Theory is revisited in the context of such anisotropic environments, biased by the presence of a filament within a wall. The point process of filament-type saddles represents it most efficiently. The constrained misalignment between the tidal and the inertia tensors in the vicinity of filament-type saddles simply explains the distribution of spin directions. This misalignment implies in particular an azimuthal orientation for the spins of more massive galaxies and a spin alignment with the filament for less massive galaxies. This prediction is found to be in qualitative agreement with measurements in Gaussian random fields and N-body simulations. It relates the transition mass to the geometry of the saddle, and accordingly predicts its measured scaling with the mass of non-linearity. Abstract: In the present work the classical problem of harmonic oscillator in the hyperbolic space $H_2^2$: $z_0^2+z_1^2-z_2^2-z_3^2=R^2$ has been completely solved in framework of Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We have shown that the harmonic oscillator on $H_2^2$, as in the other spaces with constant curvature, is exactly solvable and belongs to the class of maximally superintegrable system. We have proved that all the bounded classical trajectories are closed and periodic. The orbits of motion are ellipses or circles for bounded motion and ultraellipses or equidistant curve for infinite ones.

Abstract: In this work we investigate the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) sensitivity to the velocity power spectrum in high opacity regimes of the interstellar medium (ISM). For our analysis we use synthetic Position-Position-Velocity (PPV) cubes of fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations, post processed to include radiative transfer effects from CO. We find that PCA analysis is very different from the tools based on the traditional power spectrum of PPV data cubes. Our major finding is that PCA is also sensitive to the phase information of PPV cubes and this allows PCA to detect the changes of the underlying velocity and density spectra at high opacities, where the spectral analysis of the maps provides the universal -3 spectrum in accordance with the predictions of Lazarian \& Pogosyan (2004) theory. This makes PCA potentially a valuable tool for studies of turbulence at high opacities provided that the proper gauging of the PCA index is made. The later, however, we found to be not easy, as the PCA results change in an irregular way for data with high sonic Mach numbers. This is in contrast to synthetic Brownian noise data used for velocity and density fields that show monotonic PCA behavior. Abstract: Full-sky CMB maps from the 2015 Planck release allow us to detect departures from global isotropy on the largest scales. We present the first searches using CMB polarization for correlations induced by a non-trivial topology with a fundamental domain intersecting, or nearly intersecting, the last scattering surface (at comoving distance $��_{rec}$). We specialize to flat spaces with toroidal and slab topologies, finding that explicit searches for the latter are sensitive to other topologies with antipodal symmetry. These searches yield no detection of a compact topology at a scale below the diameter of the last scattering surface. The limits on the radius $R_i$ of the largest sphere inscribed in the topological domain (at log-likelihood-ratio $��\ln{L}>-5$ relative to a simply-connected flat Planck best-fit model) are $R_i>0.97��_{rec}$ for the cubic torus and $R_i>0.56��_{rec}$ for the slab. The limit for the cubic torus from the matched-circles search is numerically equivalent, $R_i>0.97��_{rec}$ (99% CL) from polarisation data alone. We also perform a Bayesian search for a Bianchi VII$_h$ geometry. In the non-physical setting where the Bianchi cosmology is decoupled from the standard cosmology, Planck temperature data favour the inclusion of a Bianchi component. However, the cosmological parameters generating this pattern are in strong disagreement with those found from CMB anisotropy data alone. Fitting the induced polarization pattern for this model to Planck data requires an amplitude of $-0.1\pm0.04$ compared to +1 if the model were to be correct. In the physical setting where the Bianchi parameters are fit simultaneously with the standard cosmological parameters, we find no evidence for a Bianchi VII$_h$ cosmology and constrain the vorticity of such models to $(��/H)_0, This paper is one of a set associated with the 2015 data release from Planck (see http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/planck/publications). 22 Pages, 19 Figures. Abstract: We consider turbulent synchrotron emitting media that also exhibits Faraday rotation and provide a statistical description of synchrotron polarization fluctuations. In particular, we consider these fluctuations as a function of the spatial separation of the direction of measurements and as a function of wavelength for the same line-of-sight. On the basis of our general analytical approach, we introduce several measures that can be used to obtain the spectral slopes and correlation scales of both the underlying magnetic turbulence responsible for emission and the spectrum of the Faraday rotation fluctuations. We show the synergetic nature of these measures and discuss how the study can be performed using sparsely sampled interferometric data. We also discuss how additional characteristics of turbulence can be obtained, including the turbulence anisotropy, the three dimensional direction of the mean magnetic field. We consider both cases when the synchrotron emission and Faraday rotation regions coincide and when they are spatially separated. Appealing to our earlier study in Lazarian and Pogosyan (2012) we explain that our new results are applicable to a wide range of spectral indexes of relativistic electrons responsible for synchrotron emission. Abstract: We have calculated the third order moments of scalar curvature perturbations in configuration space for different inflationary models. We developed a robust numerical technique to compute the bispectrum for different models that have some features in the inflationary potential. From the bispectrum we evaluated moments analytically in the slow roll regime while we devised a numerical mechanism to calculated these moments for non slow roll single field inflationary models with standard kinetic term that are minimally coupled to gravity. With help of these third order moments one can directly predict many non-Gaussian and geometrical measures of CBM distributions in the configuration space. Abstract: We discuss a new technique for studying astrophysical turbulence that utilizes the statistics of Doppler-broadened spectral lines. The technique relates the power Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS), i.e. the spectrum of fluctuations measured along the velocity axis in Position-Position-Velocity (PPV) data cubes available from observations, to the underlying power spectra of the velocity/density fluctuations. Unlike the standard spatial spectra, that are function of angular wavenumber, the VCS is a function of the velocity wave number k_v ~ 1/v. We show that absorption affects the VCS to a higher degree for small k_v and obtain the criteria for disregarding the absorption effects for turbulence studies at large k_v. We consider the retrieval of turbulence spectra from observations for high and low spatial resolution observations and find that the VCS allows one to study turbulence even when the emitting turbulent volume is not spatially resolved. This opens interesting prospects for using the technique for extragalactic research. We show that, while thermal broadening interferes with the turbulence studies using the VCS, it is possible to separate thermal and non-thermal contributions. Abstract: We present the BOOMERanG-03 experiment and maps of the Stokes parameters I, Q, U of the microwave sky obtained during a 14 day balloon flight in 2003. Three regions of the southern sky were surveyed: a deep survey (~ 90 square degrees) and a shallow survey (~ 750 square degrees) at high Galactic latitudes (both centered at RA ~ 5.5 h, dec ~ -45 deg) and a survey of ~ 300 square degrees across the Galactic plane at RA ~ 9.1 h, dec ~ -47 deg. All three surveys were carried out in three wide frequency bands centered at 145, 245 and 345 GHz, with an angular resolution of ~ 10'. The 145 GHz maps of Stokes I are dominated by Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, which is mapped with high signal to noise ratio. The measured anisotropy pattern is consistent with the pattern measured in the same region by BOOMERanG-98 and by WMAP. The 145 GHz maps of Stokes Q and U provide a robust statistical detection of polarization of the CMB when subjected to a power spectrum analysis. This amplitude of the polarization is consistent with that of the CMB in the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological scenario. At 145 GHz, in the CMB surveys, the intensity and polarization of the astrophysical foregrounds are found to be negligible with respect to the cosmological signal. At 245 and 345 GHz we detect ISD emission correlated to the 3000 GHz IRAS/DIRBE maps, and give upper limits for any other non-CMB component. We also present intensity maps of the surveyed section of the Galactic plane. Abstract: Abbreviated: We highlight the remarkable evolution in the CMB power spectrum over the past few years, and in the cosmological parameters for minimal inflation models derived from it. Grand unified spectra (GUS) show pre-WMAP optimal bandpowers are in good agreement with each other and with the one-year WMAP results, which now dominate the L < 600 bands. GUS are used to determine calibrations, peak/dip locations and heights, and damping parameters. These CMB experiments significantly increased the case for accelerated expansion in the early universe (the inflationary paradigm) and at the current epoch (dark energy dominance) when they were combined with `prior' probabilities on the parameters. A minimal inflation parameter set is applied in the same way to the evolving data. Grid-based and and Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods are shown to give similar values, highly stable over time and for different prior choices, with the increasing precision best characterized by decreasing errors on uncorrelated parameter eigenmodes. After marginalizing over the other cosmic and experimental variables for a weak+LSS prior, the pre-WMAP data of Jan03 cf. the post-WMAP data of Mar03 give Omega_{tot} =1.03^{+0.05}_{-0.04} cf. 1.02^{+0.04}_{-0.03}. Adding the flat prior, n_s =0.95^{+0.07}_{-0.04} cf. 0.97^{+0.02}_{-0.02}, with < 2\sigma evidence for a log variation of n_s. The densities have concordance values. The dark energy pressure-to-density ratio is not well constrained by our weak+LSS prior, but adding SN1 gives w_Q < -0.7. Abstract: We report measurements of anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation over the multipole range l ~ 200 - 3500 with the Cosmic Background Imager based on deep observations of three fields. These results confirm the drop in power with increasing l first reported in earlier measurements with this instrument, and extend the observations of this decline in power out to l \~ 2000. The decline in power is consistent with the predicted damping of primary anisotropies. At larger multipoles, l = 2000 - 3500, the power is 3.1 sigma greater than standard models for intrinsic microwave background anisotropy in this multipole range, and 3.5 sigma greater than zero. This excess power is not consistent with expected levels of residual radio source contamination but, for sigma_8 >~ 1, is consistent with predicted levels due to a secondary Sunyaev-Zeldovich anisotropy. Abstract: Using the Cosmic Background Imager, a 13-element interferometer array operating in the 26-36 GHz frequency band, we have observed 40 sq deg of sky in three pairs of fields, each ~ 145 x 165 arcmin, using overlapping pointings (mosaicing). We present images and power spectra of the cosmic microwave background radiation in these mosaic fields. We remove ground radiation and other low-level contaminating signals by differencing matched observations of the fields in each pair. The primary foreground contamination is due to point sources (radio galaxies and quasars). We have subtracted the strongest sources from the data using higher-resolution measurements, and we have projected out the response to other sources of known position in the power-spectrum analysis. The images show features on scales ~ 6 - 15 arcmin, corresponding to masses ~ (5 - 80)*10^{14} Msun at the surface of last scattering, which are likely to be the seeds of clusters of galaxies. The power spectrum estimates have a resolution Delta-l = 200 and are consistent with earlier results in the multipole range l, Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal; 16 pages including 17 color figures. Abstract: We search the BOOMERanG maps of the anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) for deviations from gaussianity. In this paper we focus on analysis techniques in pixel-space, and compute skewness, kurtosis and Minkowski functionals for the BOOMERanG maps and for gaussian simulations of the CMB sky. We do not find any significant deviation from gaussianity in the high galactic latitude section of the 150 GHz map. We do find deviations from gaussianity at lower latitudes and at 410 GHz, and we ascribe them to Galactic dust contamination. Using non-gaussian simulations of instrumental systematic effects, of foregrounds, and of sample non-gaussian cosmological models, we set upper limits to the non-gaussian component of the temperature field in the BOOMERanG maps. For fluctuations distributed as a 1 DOF $\chi^2$ mixed to the main gaussian component our upper limits are in the few % range., Comment: changes to reflect version accepted by ApJ Letters

Abstract: The differential equation with free boundary conditions on the unit disk that was proposed by Frits Zernike in 1934 to find Jacobi polynomial solutions (indicated as I), serves to define a classical and a quantum system which have been found to be superintegrable. We have determined two new orthogonal polynomial solutions (indicated as II and III) that are separable, and which involve Legendre and Gegenbauer polynomials. Here we report on their three interbasis expansion coefficients: between the I--II and I--III bases they are given by $_3F_2(\cdots|1)$ polynomials that are also special su($2$) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and Hahn polynomials. Between the II--III bases, we find an xpansion expressed by $_4F_3(\cdots|1)$'s and Racah polynomials that are related to the Wigner $6j$ coefficients., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Mathematical Physics (5 Figures)

Abstract: We consider the differential equation that Zernike proposed to classify aberrations of wavefronts in a circular pupil, as if it were a classical Hamiltonian with a non-standard potential. The trajectories turn out to be closed ellipses. We show that this is due to the existence of higher-order invariants that close into a cubic Higgs algebra. The Zernike classical system thus belongs to the class of superintegrable systems. Its Hamilton-Jacobi action separates in three vertical projections of polar coordinates of a sphere, polar and equidistant coordinates on half-hyperboloids, and also in elliptic coordinates on the sphere., Comment: Submitted to J Math Phys

Abstract: We consider the differential equation that Zernike proposed to classify aberrations of wavefronts in a circular pupil, whose value at the boundary can be nonzero. On this account the quantum Zernike system, where that differential equation is seen as a Schr\"odinger equation with a potential, is special in that it has a potential and boundary condition that are not standard in quantum mechanics. We project the disk on a half-sphere and there we find that, in addition to polar coordinates, this system separates in two additional coordinate systems (non-orthogonal on the pupil disk), which lead to Schr\"odinger-type equations with P\"oschl-Teller potentials, whose eigen-solutions involve Legendre, Gegenbauer and Jacobi polynomials. This provides new expressions for separated polynomial solutions of the original Zernike system that are real. Abstract: In the context of upcoming large-scale structure surveys such as Euclid, it is of prime importance to quantify the effect of peculiar velocities on geometric probes. Hence the formalism to compute in redshift space the geometrical and topological one-point statistics of mildly non-Gaussian 2D and 3D cosmic fields is developed. Leveraging the partial isotropy of the target statistics, the Gram-Charlier expansion of the joint probability distribution of the field and its derivatives is reformulated in terms of the corresponding anisotropic variables. In particular, the cosmic non-linear evolution of the Minkowski functionals, together with the statistics of extrema are investigated in turn for 3D catalogues and 2D slabs. The amplitude of the non-Gaussian redshift distortion correction is estimated for these geometric probes. In 3D, gravitational perturbation theory is implemented in redshift space to predict the cosmic evolution of all relevant Gram-Charlier coefficients. Applications to the estimation of the cosmic parameters sigma(z) and beta=f/b1 from upcoming surveys is discussed.
