A number of current approaches to quantum and neuromorphic computing use superconductors as the basis of their platform or as a measurement component, and will need to operate at cryogenic temperatures. Semiconductor systems are typically proposed as a top-level control in these architectures, with low-temperature passive components and intermediary superconducting electronics acting as the direct interface to the lowest-temperature stages. The architectures, therefore, require a low-power superconductor-semiconductor interface, which is not currently available. Here we report a superconducting switch that is capable of translating low-voltage superconducting inputs directly into semiconductor-compatible (above 1,000 mV) outputs at kelvin-scale temperatures (1 K or 4 K). To illustrate the capabilities in interfacing superconductors and semiconductors, we use it to drive a light-emitting diode (LED) in a photonic integrated circuit, generating photons at 1 K from a low-voltage input and detecting them with an on-chip superconducting single-photon detector. We also characterize our device's timing response (less than 300 ps turn-on, 15 ns turn-off), output impedance (greater than 1 M{\Omega}), and energy requirements (0.18 fJ/um^2, 3.24 mV/nW).

Improving the temporal resolution of single photon detectors has an impact on many applications, such as increased data rates and transmission distances for both classical and quantum optical communication systems, higher spatial resolution in laser ranging and observation of shorter-lived fluorophores in biomedical imaging. In recent years, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have emerged as the highest efficiency time-resolving single-photon counting detectors available in the near infrared. As the detection mechanism in SNSPDs occurs on picosecond time scales, SNSPDs have been demonstrated with exquisite temporal resolution below 15 ps. We reduce this value to 2.7$\pm$0.2 ps at 400 nm and 4.6$\pm$0.2 ps at 1550 nm, using a specialized niobium nitride (NbN) SNSPD. The observed photon-energy dependence of the temporal resolution and detection latency suggests that intrinsic effects make a significant contribution., 25 pages, 9 figures

We demonstrate the violation of an EPR steering inequality developed for single photon path entanglement with displacement-based detection. We use a high-rate source of heralded single-photon path-entangled states, combined with high-efficiency superconducting-based detectors, in a scheme that is free of any post-selection and thus immune to the detection loophole. This result conclusively demonstrates single-photon entanglement in a one-sided device-independent scenario, and opens the way towards implementations of device-independent quantum technologies within the paradigm of path entanglement., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The e^+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, $d\sigma/dQ^2$ for Q^2 between 200 and 60000 GeV^2, and $d\sigma/dx$ and $d\sigma/dy$ for Q^2 > 200 GeV^2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb^-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The cross section $d\sigma/dQ^2$ falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q^2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV^2. The double differential cross section $d^2\sigma/dxdQ^2$ has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks ($\bar{u}$ and $\bar{c}$) and quarks (d and s) are both required by the data. The predictions of the SM give a good description of the full body of the data presented here. A comparison of the charged-current cross section $d\sigma/dQ^2$ with the recent ZEUS results for neutral-current scattering shows that the weak and electromagnetic forces have similar strengths for Q^2 above $M^2_W, M^2_Z$. A fit to the data for $d\sigma/dQ^2$ with the Fermi constant $G_F$ and $M_W$ as free parameters yields $G_F = (1.171 \pm 0.034 (stat.) ^{+0.026}_{-0.032} (syst.) ^{+0.016}_{-0.015} (PDF)) \times 10^{-5} GeV^{-2}$ and $M_W = 80.8 ^{+4.9}_{-4.5} (stat.) ^{+5.0}_{-4.3} (syst.) ^{+1.4}_{-1.3} (PDF) GeV$. Results for $M_W$, where the propagator effect alone or the SM constraint between $G_F$ and $M_W$ have been considered, are also presented., Comment: 34 pages including 10 figures and 6 tables; added tables for correlated and uncorrelated systematic uncertainties and fixed the total systematic uncertainty for dsigma/dxdQ2 (Table 4 and Figs.7-8); erratum submitted to Eur. We measure the spectrum of cosmic rays with energies greater than $10^{18.2}$ eV with the Fluorescence Detectors (FDs) and the Surface Detectors (SDs) of the Telescope Array Experiment using the data taken in our first 2.3-year observation from May 27 2008 to September 7 2010. A hybrid air shower reconstruction technique is employed to improve accuracies in determination of arrival directions and primary energies of cosmic rays using both FD and SD data. The energy spectrum presented here is in agreement with our previously published spectra and the HiRes results., 28 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

We present a measurement of the energy spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays performed by the Telescope Array experiment using monocular observations from its two new FADC-based fluorescence detectors. After a short description of the experiment, we describe the data analysis and event reconstruction procedures. Since the aperture of the experiment must be calculated by Monte Carlo simulation, we describe this calculation and the comparisons of simulated and real data used to verify the validity of the aperture calculation. Finally, we present the energy spectrum calculated from the merged monocular data sets of the two FADC-based detectors, and also the combination of this merged spectrum with an independent, previously published monocular spectrum measurement performed by Telescope Array's third fluorescence detector (Abu-Zayyad {\it et al.}, {Astropart. Phys.} 39 (2012), 109). This combined spectrum corroborates the recently published Telescope Array surface detector spectrum (Abu-Zayyad {\it et al.}, {Astrophys. Journ.} 768 (2013), L1) with independent systematic uncertainties., 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

We search for ultra-high energy photons by analyzing geometrical properties of shower fronts of events registered by the Telescope Array surface detector. By making use of an event-by-event statistical method, we derive upper limits on the absolute flux of primary photons with energies above 10^19, 10^19.5 and 10^20 eV based on the first three years of data taken., 7 pages, 5 figures

The CREAM calorimeter, designed to measure the spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei from under 1 TeV to 1000 TeV, is a 20 radiation length (X0) deep sampling calorimeter. The calorimeter is comprised of 20 layers of tungsten interleaved with 20 layers of scintillating fiber ribbons, and is preceded by a pair of graphite interaction targets providing about 0.42 proton interaction lengths (\lambda int). The calorimeter was placed in one of CERN's SPS accelerator beams for calibration and testing. Beams of 150 GeV electrons were used for calibration, and a variety of electron, proton, and nuclear fragment beams were used to test the simulation model of the detector. In this paper we discuss the performance of the calorimeter in the electron beam and compare electron beam data with simulation results., Comment: 29th International Cosmic Ray Conference Pune (2005) 8, 371-374

We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass). The instrument (CREAM-II) was comprised of detectors based on different techniques (Cherenkov light, specific ionization in scintillators and silicon sensors) to provide a redundant charge identification and a thin ionization calorimeter capable of measuring the energy of cosmic rays up to several hundreds of TeV. The data analysis is described and the individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe are reported up to ~ 10^14 eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for all the primary elements and can be expressed as a power law in energy E^{-2.66+/-0.04}. The nitrogen absolute intensity in the energy range 100-800 GeV/n is also measured., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, presented at ICRC 2009, Lodz, Poland

A superconducting single-photon detector based on a niobium nitride nanowire is demonstrated in an optical-fibre-based quantum key distribution test bed operating at a clock rate of 3.3 GHz and a transmission wavelength of 850 nm. The low jitter of the detector leads to significant reduction in the estimated quantum bit error rate and a resultant improvement in the secrecy efficiency compared to previous estimates made by use of silicon single-photon avalanche detectors., 11 pages, including 2 figures

We are developing photon-counting cameras employing cryogenic arrays of energy-resolving TES (Transition Edge Sensor) pixels. These are being tested in ground-based instruments, but will have their greatest impact when employed on space platforms, where they can cover the 10micrometer-100nm range with high time- and moderate energy- resolution. Here we summarize briefly existing device performance, current directions in array camera development and anticipated capabilities., Romani 2002 (4pp), to appear in "Hubble's Science Legacy: Future Optical-Ultraviolet Astronomy from Space", eds. We are developing time- and energy-resolved near-IR/optical/UV photon detectors based on sharp superconducting-normal transition edges in thin films. We report observations of the Crab pulsar made during prototype testing at the McDonald 2.7m telescope with a fiber-coupled transition-edge sensor (TES) system. These data show substantial (d[alpha]~0.3), rapid variations in the spectral index through the pulse profile, with a strong phase-varying IR break across our energy band. These variations correlate with X-ray spectral variations, but no single synchrotron population can account for the full Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). We also describe test spectrophotopolarimetry observations probing the energy dependence of the polarization sweep; this may provide a new key to understanding the radiating particle population., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures -- to appear in ApJ V562

First inclusive measurements of isolated prompt photons in photoproduction at the HERA ep collider have been made with the ZEUS detector, using an integrated luminosity of 38.4 pb$^{-1}$. Cross sections are given as a function of the pseudorapidity and the transverse energy ($\eta^\gamma$, \eTg) of the photon, for $\eTg > $ 5 GeV in the $\gamma p$ centre-of-mass energy range 134-285 GeV. Comparisons are made with predictions from Monte Carlo models having leading-logarithm parton showers, and with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations, using currently available parameterisations of the photon structure. For forward $\eta^\gamma$ (proton direction) good agreement is found, but in the rear direction all predictions fall below the data., Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures and 2 tables

The dependence of the photon structure on the photon virtuality, Q^2, is studied by measuring the reaction e^+p\to e^+ + {\rm jet} + {\rm jet} + {\rm X} at photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 134 < W < 223 GeV. Events have been selected in the Q^2 ranges \approx 0 GeV^2, 0.1-0.55 GeV^2, and 1.5-4.5 GeV^2, having two jets with transverse energy E_T^{jet} > 5.5 GeV in the final state. The dijet cross section has been measured as a function of the fractional momentum of the photon participating in the hard process, x_gamma. The ratio of the dijet cross section with x_gamma < 0.75 to that with x_gamma > 0.75 decreases as Q^2 increases. The data are compared with the predictions of NLO pQCD and leading-order Monte Carlo programs using various parton distribution functions of the photon. The measurements can be interpreted in terms of a resolved photon component that falls with Q^2 but remains present at values of Q^2 up to 4.5 GeV^2. However, none of the models considered gives a good description of the data., 15 pages and 4 figures

We report on the first astronomical observations with a photon counting pixel detector that provides arrival time- (delta t = 100ns) and energy- (delta E_gamma < 0.15eV) resolved measurements from the near IR through the near UV. Our test observations were performed by coupling this Transition Edge Sensor (TES) device to a 0.6m telescope; we have obtained the first simultaneous optical near-IR phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. A varying infrared turnover gives evidence of self-absorption in the pulsar plasma. The potential of such detectors in imaging arrays from a space platform are briefly described., 4 pages, 5 figures

We have searched for the production of a selectron and a squark in $e^+p$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The selectron and squark are sought in the direct decay into the lightest neutralino in the framework of supersymmetric extensions to the Standard Model which conserve R-parity. No evidence for the production of supersymmetric particles has been found in a data sample corresponding to 46.6~pb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We express upper limits on the product of the cross section times the decay branching ratios as excluded regions in the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model., 22 pages including 4 figures

The J/$\psi$ was identified using both the $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channels and events were selected within the range $0.4 1$ GeV$^2$, NLO calculations of the photon-gluon fusion process based on the colour-singlet model are in good agreement with the data. The predictions of a specific leading order colour-octet model, as formulated to describe the CDF data on J/$\psi$ hadroproduction, are not consistent with the data., Comment: 31 pages including 7 figures

Diffractive dissociation of quasi-real photons at a photon-proton centre of mass energy of W ~ 200 GeV is studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The process under consideration is gamma p -> X N, where X is the diffractively dissociated photon system of mass M_X and N is either a proton or a nucleonic system with mass M_N < 2GeV. The cross section for this process in the interval 3 < M_X < 24 GeV relative to the total photoproduction cross section was measured to be sigma^partial_D / sigma_tot = 6.2 +- 0.2(stat) +- 1.4(syst)%. After extrapolating this result to the mass interval of m_phi^2 < M_X^2 < 0.05 W^2 and correcting it for proton dissociation, the fraction of the total cross section attributed to single diffractive photon dissociation, gamma p -> X p, is found to be sigma_SD / sigma_tot = 13.3 +- 0.5(stat) +- 3.6(syst)%. The mass spectrum of the dissociated photon system in the interval 8 < M_X < 24 GeV can be described by the triple pomeron (PPP) diagram with an effective pomeron intercept of alpha_P(0) = 1.12 +- 0.04(stat) +- 0.08(syst). The cross section for photon dissociation in the range 3 < M_X < 8 GeV is significantly higher than that expected from the triple pomeron amplitude describing the region 8 < M_X < 24 GeV. Assuming that this discrepancy is due to a pomeron-pomeron-reggeon (PPR) term, its contribution to the diffractive cross section in the interval 3 < M_X < 24 GeV is estimated to be f_PPR = 26 +- 3(stat) +- 12(syst)%., 29 pages including 9 figures

The reaction $\gamma p \rightarrow \omega p$ $(\omega \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\pi^0\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ has been studied in $ep$ interactions using the ZEUS detector at photon-proton centre-of-mass energies between $70$ and $90 GeV$ and $|t| < 0.6 GeV^2$, where $t$ is the squared four momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The elastic \ome photoproduction cross section has been measured to be $\sigma_{\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p} = 1.21\pm 0.12\pm 0.23 \mu b$. The differential cross section $d\sigma_{\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p} /d|t|$ has an exponential shape $e^{-b |t|}$ with a slope $b = 10.0\pm 1.2\pm 1.3 GeV^{-2}$. The angular distributions of the decay pions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. When compared to low energy data, the features of $\omega$ photoproduction as measured at HERA energies are in agreement with those of a soft diffractive process. Previous measurements of the $\rho^0$ and $\phi$ photoproduction cross sections at HERA show a similar behaviour., Comment: 32 pages including 7 figures Various changes throughout the text of paper

In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken $x$ and $Q^2$ in the range $ 3 \cdot 10^{-4} < \xbj < 6\cdot 10^{-3}$ and $10 < Q^2, PS file including 4 figures First replacement due to display problems with fig. 3. Inclusive jet cross sections for events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction from the reaction $ep \rightarrow jet \; + \; X$ with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector. The cross sections refer to jets with transverse energies $E_T^{jet}>8$~GeV. The data show the characteristics of a diffractive process mediated by pomeron exchange. Assuming that the events are due to the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure, the quark and gluon content of the pomeron is probed at a scale $\sim (E_T^{jet})^2$. A comparison of the measurements with model predictions based on QCD plus Regge phenomenology requires a contribution of partons with a hard momentum density in the pomeron. A combined analysis of the jet cross sections and recent ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function in deep inelastic scattering gives the first experimental evidence for the gluon content of the pomeron in diffractive hard scattering processes. The data indicate that between 30\% and 80\% of the momentum of the pomeron carried by partons is due to hard gluons., 25 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file. Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (ETJ). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with ETJ > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with ETJ > 11 GeV. Calculated cross sections for resolved photon processes with 6 GeV < ETJ < 11 GeV lie below the data., 30 pages including 5 figures. Includes a reference mistakenly omitted in previous version

A measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering for $\gamma^* p$ centre-of-mass energies $75< W < 175$~GeV and momentum transfer squared $10< Q^2 < 160$~GeV$^2$ from the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The differential charged particle rates in the $\gamma^* p$ centre-of-mass system as a function of the scaled longitudinal momentum, $x_F$, and of the transverse momentum, $p_t^*$ and $\,\,$ , as a function of $x_F$, $W$ and $Q^2$ are given. Separate distributions are shown for events with (LRG) and without (NRG) a rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction. The data are compared with results from experiments at lower beam energies, with the naive quark parton model and with parton models including perturbative QCD corrections. The comparison shows the importance of the higher order QCD processes. Significant differences of the inclusive charged particle rates between NRG and LRG events at the same $W$ are observed. The value of $\,\,$ for LRG events with a hadronic mass $M_X$, which excludes the forward produced baryonic system, is similar to the $\,\,$ value observed in fixed target experiments at $W \approx M_X$., Comment: 34 pages, latex, 9 figures appended as uuencoded file. Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 280 GeV and a photon virtuality Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant., 32 pages including 6 figures

Using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electron-proton collider, we have searched for lepton flavor violation in ep collisions at a center-of-mass energy s^1/2 of 300 GeV. Events of the type e + p -> lepton + X with a final-state lepton (mu or tau) of high transverse momentum, were sought. No evidence was found for lepton flavor violation in the combined 1993 and 1994 data samples, for which the integrated luminosities were 0.84 pb^-1 for e- p collisions and 2.94 pb^-1 for e+ p collisions. Limits on coupling vs. mass are provided for leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks. For flavor violating couplings of electromagnetic strength, we set 95% confidence level lower limits on leptoquark masses between 207 GeV and 272 GeV, depending on the leptoquark species and final-state lepton. For leptoquark masses larger than 300 GeV, limits on flavor-changing couplings are determined, many of which supersede prior limits from rare decay processes., 37 pages, 9 figures, LaTex
