Abstract

We prove the following formula for the ground state energy density of a dilute Bose gas with density $\rho$ in $2$ dimensions in the thermodynamic limit \begin{align*} e^{\rm{2D}}(\rho) = 4\pi \rho^2 Y\left(1 - Y \vert \log Y \vert + \left( 2\Gamma + \frac{1}{2} + \log(\pi) \right) Y \right) + o(\rho^2 Y^{2}). \end{align*} Here $Y= |\log(\rho a^2)|^{-1}$ and $a$ is the scattering length of the two-body potential. This result in $2$ dimensions corresponds to the famous Lee-Huang-Yang formula in $3$ dimensions. Abstract

We define the random magnetic Laplacien with spatial white noise as magnetic field on the two-dimensional torus using paracontrolled calculus. It yields a random self-adjoint operator with pure point spectrum and domain a random subspace of nonsmooth functions in L 2. We give sharp bounds on the eigenvalues which imply an almost sure Weyl-type law.

Abstract

We consider the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian $\mathcal{L}_h$ on a Riemannian manifold, with a constant-rank and non-vanishing magnetic field $B$. Under the localization assumption that $B$ admits a unique and non-degenerate well, we construct three successive Birkhoff normal forms to describe the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}_h$ in the semiclassical limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$. We deduce an expansion of all the eigenvalues under a threshold, in powers of $\hbar^{1/2}$.

Abstract

The goal of this paper is manyfold. Firstly, we want to give a short introduction to the Bochner Laplacian and explain why it acts locally as a magnetic Laplacian. Secondly, given a confining magnetic field, we use Agmon-like estimates to reduce its spectral study to magnetic Laplacians, in the semiclassical limit. Finally, we use this to translate already-known spectral asymptotics for the magnetic Laplacian to the Bochner Laplacian.

Abstract

In this paper we construct a Birkhoff normal form for a semiclassical magnetic Schr{��}dinger operator with non-degenerate magnetic field, and discrete magnetic well, defined on an even dimensional riemannian manifold M. We use this normal form to get an expansion of the first eigenvalues in powers of h^{1/2}, and semiclassical Weyl asymptotics for this operator.

Abstract

The spatial development of hadronic showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter is studied using test beam data collected at CERN and FNAL for single positive pions and protons with initial momenta in the range from 10 to 80 GeV/c. Both longitudinal and radial development of hadron showers are parametrised with two-component functions. The parametrisation is fit to test beam data and simulations using the QGSP_BERT and FTFP_BERT physics lists from Geant4 version 9.6. The parameters extracted from data and simulated samples are compared for the two types of hadrons. The response to pions and the ratio of the non-electromagnetic to the electromagnetic calorimeter response, h/e, are estimated using the extrapolation and decomposition of the longitudinal profiles., Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables; author list changed; submitted to JINST

Abstract

In special tests, the active layers of the CALICE Digital Hadron Calorimeter prototype, the DHCAL, were exposed to low energy particle beams, without being interleaved by absorber plates. The thickness of each layer corresponded approximately to 0.29 radiation lengths or 0.034 nuclear interaction lengths, defined mostly by the copper and steel skins of the detector cassettes. This paper reports on measurements performed with this device in the Fermilab test beam with positrons in the energy range of 1 to 10 GeV. The measurements are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and a standalone program to emulate the detailed response of the active elements. The experimental data were collected at CERN and FNAL for single particles with initial momenta from 10 to 80 GeV/c. Abstract

A detailed study of hadronic interactions is presented using data recorded with the highly granular CALICE silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter. Approximately 350,000 selected negatively charged pion events at energies between 2 and 10 GeV have been studied. The predictions of several physics models available within the Geant4 simulation tool kit are compared to this data. A reasonable overall description of the data is observed; the Monte Carlo predictions are within 20% of the data, and for many observables much closer. Abstract

Lepton colliders are considered as options to complement and to extend the physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an $e^+e^-$ collider under development aiming at centre-of-mass energies of up to 3 TeV. For experiments at CLIC, a hadron sampling calorimeter with tungsten absorber is proposed. Such a calorimeter provides sufficient depth to contain high-energy showers, while allowing a compact size for the surrounding solenoid. A fine-grained calorimeter prototype with tungsten absorber plates and scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers was built and exposed to particle beams at CERN. Results obtained with electrons, pions and protons of momenta up to 10 GeV are presented in terms of energy resolution and shower shape studies. The results are compared with several GEANT4 simulation models in order to assess the reliability of the Monte Carlo predictions relevant for a future experiment at CLIC., 28 pages, 23 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The intrinsic time structure of hadronic showers influences the timing capability and the required integration time of hadronic calorimeters in particle physics experiments, and depends on the active medium and on the absorber of the calorimeter. With the CALICE T3B experiment, a setup of 15 small plastic scintillator tiles read out with Silicon Photomultipliers, the time structure of showers is measured on a statistical basis with high spatial and temporal resolution in sampling calorimeters with tungsten and steel absorbers. The results are compared to GEANT4 (version 9.4 patch 03) simulations with different hadronic physics models. These comparisons demonstrate the importance of using high precision treatment of low-energy neutrons for tungsten absorbers, while an overall good agreement between data and simulations for all considered models is observed for steel., Comment: 24 pages including author list, 9 figures, published in JINST

A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with planes of 45x10x3 mm3 plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype's performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy measurement. These results represent an important milestone in the development of highly granular calorimeters using scintillator strip technology. This technology is being developed for a future linear collider experiment, aiming at the precise measurement of jet energies using particle flow techniques. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 8(09), 1-22 (2013). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/8/09/P09001, We investigate the three dimensional substructure of hadronic showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel hadronic calorimeter. The high granularity of the detector is used to find track segments of minimum ionising particles within hadronic showers, providing sensitivity to the spatial structure and the details of secondary particle production in hadronic cascades. The multiplicity, length and angular distribution of identified track segments are compared to GEANT4 simulations with several different shower models. Abstract

In this communication, the mass declined for the decay channel, e+e- -> ZH -> e+e- + X, as measured by the ILD detector was studied. The Higgs mass is assumed to be 120 GeV and the center of mass energy is 250 GeV. Abstract

The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry., 54 pages, 48 pictures
