While current-induced torque by orbital current has been experimentally found in various structures, evidence for its reciprocity has been missing so far. Here, we report experimental evidence of strong inverse orbital torque in YIG/Pt/CuOx (YIG = Y3Fe5O12) mediated by spin-orbital entangled electronic states in Pt. By injecting spin current from YIG to Pt by the spin pumping via ferromagnetic resonance and by the spin Seebeck effect, we find a pronounced inverse spin Hall effect-like signal. While a part of the signal is explained as due to the inverse spin-orbital Hall effect in Pt, we also find substantial increase of the signal in YIG/Pt/CuOx structures compared to the signal in YIG/Pt. We attribute this to the inverse orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect at Pt/CuOx interface mediated by the spin-orbital entangled states in Pt. Our work paves the way toward understanding of spin-orbital entangled physics in nonequilibrium and provides a way for electrical detection of the orbital current in orbitronic device applications., Comment: 14 pages, four figures

We study how available data on COVID-19 cases and deaths in different countries are reliable. Our analysis is based on a modification of the law of anomalous numbers, the Newcomb-Benford law, applied to the daily number of deaths and new cases in each country. We first revisit the Newcomb-Benford law and show how to avoid false negative compliance of the data. We then compared deviation from this law, to a number of social and economic indices for each country by computing the Spearman rank order correlation between each index and the \c{hi}2 deviation of COVID- 19 data to the modified NB law. A similar analysis for excess deaths for the same countries with sufficient available data was performed. We conclude that in general less democratic, less transparent and more corrupt countries tend to have data of lesser quality. Weak multiplex percolation generalizes percolation to multi-layer networks, represented as networks with a common set of nodes linked by multiple types (colors) of edges. We report a novel discontinuous phase transition in this problem. This anomalous transition occurs in networks of three or more layers without unconnected nodes, $P(0)=0$. Above a critical value of a control parameter, the removal of a tiny fraction $\Delta$ of nodes or edges triggers a failure cascade which ends either with the total collapse of the network, or a return to stability with the system essentially intact. The discontinuity is not accompanied by any singularity of the giant component, in contrast to the discontinuous hybrid transition which usually appears in such problems. The control parameter is the fraction of nodes in each layer with a single connection, $\Pi=P(1)$. We obtain asymptotic expressions for the collapse time and relaxation time, above and below the critical point $\Pi_c$, respectively. In the limit $\Delta\to0$ the total collapse for $\Pi>\Pi_\text{c}$ takes a time $T \propto 1/(\Pi-\Pi_\text{c})$, while there is an exponential relaxation below $\Pi_\text{c}$ with a relaxation time $\tau \propto 1/[\Pi_\text{c}-\Pi]$., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Identifying communities in networks is a fundamental and challenging problem of practical importance in many fields of science. Current methods either ignore the heterogeneous distribution of nodal degrees or assume prior knowledge of the number of communities. Here we propose an efficient hypothesis test for community detection based on quantifying dissimilarities between graphs. Given a random graph, the null hypothesis is that it is of degree-corrected Erd\"{o}s-R\'{e}nyi type. We compare the dissimilarity between them by a measure incorporating the vertex distance distribution, the clustering coefficient distribution, and the alpha-centrality distribution, which is used for our hypothesis test. We design a two-stage bipartitioning algorithm to uncover the number of communities and the corresponding structure simultaneously. In many systems consisting of interacting subsystems, the complex interactions between elements can be represented using multilayer networks. However percolation, key to understanding connectivity and robustness, is not trivially generalised to multiple layers. We describe a generalisation of percolation to multilayer networks: weak multiplex percolation. A node belongs to a connected component if at least one of its neighbours in each layer is in this component. We fully describe the critical phenomena of this process. In particular, in two layers, with finite second moments of the degree distributions, an unusual continuous transition with quadratic growth above the threshold. When the second moments diverge, the singularity is determined by the asymptotics of the degree distributions, creating a rich set of critical behaviours. In three or more layers we find a discontinuous hybrid transition which persists even in highly heterogeneous degree distributions, becoming continuous only when the powerlaw exponent reaches $1+ 1/(M-1)$ for $M$ layers., 42 pages, 8 figures

We report an investigation of the spin- to charge-current conversion in sputter-deposited films of topological insulator $Bi_2Se_{3}$ onto single crystalline layers of YIG $(Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12})$ and polycrystalline films of Permalloy $(Py = Ni_{81}Fe_{19})$. Pure spin current was injected into the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ layer by means of the spin pumping process in which the spin precession is obtained by exciting the ferromagnetic resonance of the ferromagnetic film. The spin-current to charge-current conversion, occurring at the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}/$ferromagnet interface, was attribute to the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE). By analyzing the data as a function of the $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ thickness we calculated the IREE length used to characterize the efficiency of the conversion process and found that 1.2 pm $\leq|{\lambda}_{IREE}|\leq$ 2.2 pm. These results support the fact that the surface states of $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ have a dominant role in the spin-charge conversion process, and the mechanism based on the spin diffusion process plays a secondary role. We also discovered that the spin- to charge-current mechanism in $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ has the same polarity as the one in Ta, which is the opposite to the one in Pt. The combination of the magnetic properties of YIG and Py, with strong spin-orbit coupling and dissipationless surface states topologically protected of $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ might lead to spintronic devices with fast and efficient spin-charge conversion.

We report the spin to charge current conversation in an intrinsic topological insulator (TI) $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ film at room temperature. The spin currents are generated in a thin layer of permalloy (Py) by two different processes, spin pumping (SPE) and spin Seebeck effects (SSE). In the first we use microwave-driven ferromagnetic resonance of the Py film to generate a SPE spin current that is injected into the TI $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ layer in direct contact with Py. In the second we use the SSE in the longitudinal configuration in Py without contamination by the Nernst effect made possible with a thin NiO layer between the Py and $(Bi_{0.22}Sb_{0.78})_2Te_3$ layers. The spin-to-charge current conversion is attributed to the inverse Edelstein effect (IEE) made possible by the spin-momentum locking in the electron Fermi contours due to the Rashba field. The measurements by the two techniques yield very similar values for the IEE parameter, which are larger than the reported values in the previous studies on topological insulators., 18 pages and 7 figures

Studying abroad has become very popular among students. The ERASMUS mobility program is one of the largest international student exchange programs in the world, which has supported already more than three million participants since 1987. We analyzed the mobility pattern within this program in 2011-12 and found a gender gap across countries and subject areas. Namely, for almost all participating countries, female students are over-represented in the ERASMUS program when compared to the entire population of tertiary students. The same tendency is observed across different subject areas. We also found a gender asymmetry in the geographical distribution of hosting institutions, with a bias of male students in Scandinavian countries. However, a detailed analysis reveals that this latter asymmetry is rather driven by subject and consistent with the distribution of gender ratios among subject areas.

We study the evolution of branching trees embedded in Euclidean spaces with suppressed branching of spatially close nodes. This cooperative branching process accounts for the effect of overcrowding of nodes in the embedding space and mimics the evolution of life processes (the so-called "tree of life") in which a new level of complexity emerges as a short transition followed by a long period of gradual evolution or even complete extinction. We consider the models of branching trees in which each new node can produce up to two twigs within a unit distance from the node in the Euclidean space, but this branching is suppressed if the newborn node is closer than at distance $a$ from one of the previous generation nodes. This results in an explosive (exponential) growth in the initial period, and, after some crossover time $t_x \sim \ln(1/a)$ for small $a$, in a slow (power-law) growth. This special point is also a transition from "small" to "large words" in terms of network science. We present, as a very general method, an effective field theory to analyze models defined over small-world networks. Even if the exactness of the method is limited to the paramagnetic regions and to some special limits, it gives the exact critical behavior and the exact critical surfaces and percolation thresholds, and provide a clear and immediate (also in terms of calculation) insight of the physics. The underlying structure of the non random part of the model, i.e., the set of spins staying in a given lattice L_0 of dimension d_0 and interacting through a fixed coupling J_0, is exactly taken into account. When J_0\geq 0, the small-world effect gives rise to the known fact that a second order phase transition takes place, independently of the dimension d_0 and of the added random connectivity c. We solve the ferromagnetic q-state Potts model on an inhomogeneous annealed network which mimics a random recursive graph. We find that this system has the inverted Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless (BKT) phase transition for any $q \geq 1$, including the values $q \geq 3$, where the Potts model normally shows a first order phase transition. We obtain the temperature dependences of the order parameter, specific heat, and susceptibility demonstrating features typical for the BKT transition. We show that in the entire normal phase, both the distribution of a linear response to an applied local field and the distribution of spin-spin correlations have a critical, i.e. power-law, form., 7 pages, 3 figures

We study the Laplacian operator of an uncorrelated random network and, as an application, consider hopping processes (diffusion, random walks, signal propagation, etc.) on networks. We develop a strict approach to these problems. We derive an exact closed set of integral equations, which provide the averages of the Laplacian operator's resolvent. This enables us to describe the propagation of a signal and random walks on the network. We show that the determining parameter in this problem is the minimum degree $q_m$ of vertices in the network and that the high-degree part of the degree distribution is not that essential. The position of the lower edge of the Laplacian spectrum $\lambda_c$ appears to be the same as in the regular Bethe lattice with the coordination number $q_m$. Namely, $\lambda_c>0$ if $q_m>2$, and $\lambda_c=0$ if $q_m\leq2$. In both these cases the density of eigenvalues $\rho(\lambda)\to0$ as $\lambda\to\lambda_c+0$, but the limiting behaviors near $\lambda_c$ are very different. In terms of a distance from a starting vertex, the hopping propagator is a steady moving Gaussian, broadening with time. This picture qualitatively coincides with that for a regular Bethe lattice. In this work we analyze scale-free networks with different power law spectra $N(k) \sim k^{-\gamma}$ under a boolean dynamic, where the boolean rule that each node obeys is a function of its connectivity $k$. This is done by using only two logical functions (AND and XOR) which are controlled by a parameter $q$. Using damage spreading technique we show that the Hamming distance and the number of 1's exhibit power law behavior as a function of $q$. We consider a class of simple, non-trivial models of evolving weighted scale-free networks. The network evolution in these models is determined by attachment of new vertices to ends of preferentially chosen weighted edges. Resulting networks have scale-free distributions of the edge weight, of the vertex degree, and of the vertex strength. We discuss situations where this mechanism operates. Apart of stochastic models of weighted networks, we introduce a wide class of deterministic, scale-free, weighted graphs with the small-world effect. In a related paper we have obtained that the effective action for a kappa-deformed quantum field theory has a real and an imaginary part. The real part is half the sum of the kappa-deformed zero mode frequencies, while the imaginary part is proportional to the sum of the squares of the zero mode frequencies, being proportional to the inverse of kappa. Here we calculate this imaginary part for the kappa-deformed electromagnetic field confined between two perfectly conducting parallel plates. After renormalization this imaginary part gives a creation rate of kappa-deformed electromagnetic radiation. This creation rate goes to zero at the appropriate limits, namely: when the deformation disappears or at infinite separation of the plates. The result agrees with previously obtained results and shed light on them by exhibiting the creation rate as originated in a sum of zero modes. Let us note that due to the rather complicated kappa-deformed electromagnetic dispersion relation we were led to the theorem of the argument in order to sum the squares of the kappa-deformed frequencies., 5 pages

The FORG (Fibre Optic Resonant Gyroscope) opeeration principle uses a recirculating ring resonant cavity to get a rotation-induced Sagnac effect enhancement (cited by Ezekiel and Balsamo). It grants to a FORG a comparable sensitivity in relation an I-FOG (Interferometric Fibre Optic Gyroscope)that has the fiber lenght equal a half of finesse factor times longer. Other advantages is despite of thermal drift because the FORG uses less quantity of fibre than the I-FOG, giving to the first less thermal drift sensitivity than the last. The proposal of this work is to show a applied to a FORG technique that simplifies the signal treatment, employing all digital setup, resulting in a maximally flat scale factor. In this investigation are presented over the simulations results, employing the modified digital FM spectrometry techniques by decimation and interpolation techniques over a ring resonator that pursuit a 10 meters SM-PM lenght fiber coil and 10 centimeters of diameter, with a 1550 nanometers laser source. The advantages of these techniques are to simplify the electronic circuitry, offering an upgrade facility, using only one DSP (Digital Signal Processor), realizing all needed functions. In a quantum field with spacetime invariance governed by the Poincare algebra the one-loop effective action is equal to the sum of zero modes frequencies, which is the vacuum energy of the field. The first Casimir invariant of the Poincare algebra provides the proper time Hamiltonian in Schwinger's proper time representation of the effective action. We consider here a massive neutral scalar field with spacetime invariance governed by the so called kappa-deformed Poincare algebra. We show here that if in the kappa-deformed theory the first Casimir invariant of the algebra is also used as the proper-time hamiltonian the effective action appears with a real and an imaginary part. The real part is equal to half the sum of kappa-deformed zero mode frequencies, which gives the vacuum energy of the kappa-deformed field. In the limit in which the deformation disappears this real part reduces to half of the sum of zero mode frequencies of the usual scalar field. The imaginary part is proportional to the sum of the squares of the kappa-deformed zero mode frequencies. This part is a creation rate of field excitations in the situations in which it gives rise to a finite physically meaningful quantity. This is the case when the field is submitted to boundary conditions and properly renormalized, as we show in a related paper., Comment: 10 pages

In many real growing networks the mean number of connections per vertex increases with time. The Internet, the Word Wide Web, collaboration networks, and many others display this behavior. Such a growth can be called {\em accelerated}. We show that this acceleration influences distribution of connections and may determine the structure of a network. We discuss general consequences of the acceleration and demonstrate its features applying simple illustrating examples. In particular, we show that the accelerated growth fairly well explains the structure of the Word Web (the network of interacting words of human language). We develop a statistical mechanics approach for random networks with uncorrelated vertices. We construct equilibrium statistical ensembles of such networks and obtain their partition functions and main characteristics. We find simple dynamical construction procedures that produce equilibrium uncorrelated random graphs with an arbitrary degree distribution. Human language can be described as a complex network of linked words. In such a treatment, each distinct word in language is a vertex of this web, and neighboring words in sentences are connected by edges. It was recently found (Ferrer and Sol\'e) that the distribution of the numbers of connections of words in such a network is of a peculiar form which includes two pronounced power-law regions. Here we treat language as a self-organizing network of interacting words. We show that the connectivity distributions $P(k,t)$ of scale-free growing networks ($t$ is the network size) have the generic scale -- the cut-off at $k_{cut} \sim t^\beta$. The scaling exponent $\beta$ is related to the exponent $\gamma$ of the connectivity distribution, $\beta=1/(\gamma-1)$. We propose the simplest model of scale-free growing networks and obtain the exact form of its connectivity distribution for any size of the network. We demonstrate that the trace of the initial conditions -- a hump at $k_h \sim k_{cut} \sim t^\beta$ -- may be found for any network size. The avalanche mixing of granular solids in a slowly rotated 2D upright drum is studied. We demonstrate that the account of the difference $\delta$ between the angle of marginal stability and the angle of repose of the granular material leads to a restricted value of the mixing time $\tau$ for a half filled drum. The process of mixing is described by a linear discrete difference equation. We show that the mixing looks like linear diffusion of fractions with the diffusion coefficient vanishing when $\delta$ is an integer part of $\pi$. We note that the model discussed in the communication of S. Bornholdt and H. Ebel (World Wide Web scaling exponent from Simon's 1955 model, cond-mat/0008465) is the particular case of the model considered and solved exactly in our paper, cond-mat/0004434. These models may be used for estimation of the order of the deviation of the scaling exponent from 2 both for the distributions of incoming links and links coming out from nodes but not for the obtaining some specific values of the exponents from the WWW growth data. We emphasize that, unlike the statement of Bornholdt and Ebel, both the network under consideration and the model of Barab\'{a}si and Albert provide quite equal possibilities for individual growth. There is no great difference between them in this respect. The resulting distributions for individual nodes and arising scaling relations have been obtained in our paper, cond-mat/0004434. We study the growth of a reference network with aging of sites defined in the following way. Each new site of the network is connected to some old site with probability proportional (i) to the connectivity of the old site as in the Barab\'{a}si-Albert's model and (ii) to $\tau^{-\alpha}$, where $\tau$ is the age of the old site. We consider $\alpha$ of any sign although reasonable values are $0 \leq \alpha \leq \infty$. We find both from simulation and analytically that the network shows scaling behavior only in the region $\alpha < 1$. When $\alpha$ increases from $-\infty$ to 0, the exponent $\gamma$ of the distribution of connectivities ($P(k) \propto k^{-\gamma}$ for large $k$) grows from 2 to the value for the network without aging, i.e. to 3 for the Barab\'{a}si-Albert's model. The following increase of $\alpha$ to 1 makes $\gamma$ to grow to $\infty$. We generalize the Barab\'{a}si--Albert's model of growing networks accounting for initial properties of sites and find exactly the distribution of connectivities of the network $P(q)$ and the averaged connectivity $\bar{q}(s,t)$ of a site $s$ in the instant $t$ (one site is added per unit of time). At long times $P(q) \sim q^{-\gamma}$ at $q \to \infty$ and $\bar{q}(s,t) \sim (s/t)^{-\beta}$ at $s/t \to 0$, where the exponent $\gamma$ varies from 2 to $\infty$ depending on the initial attractiveness of sites. We present an exact description of a crossover between two different regimes of simple analogies of small-world networks. Each of the sites chosen with a probability $p$ from $n$ sites of an ordered system defined on a circle is connected to all other sites selected in such a way. Every link is of a unit length. Thus, while $p$ changes from 0 to 1, an averaged shortest distance between a pair of sites changes from $\bar{\ell} \sim n$ to $\bar{\ell} = 1$. We find the distribution of the shortest distances $P(\ell)$ and obtain a scaling form of $\bar{\ell}(p,n)$. In spite of the simplicity of the models under consideration, the results appear to be surprisingly close to those obtained numerically for usual small-world networks., Comment: 4 pages with 3 postscript figures

We investigate submonolayer epitaxial growth with a fixed monomer flux and irreversible aggregation of adatom islands due to their effective diffusion. When the diffusivity D_k of an island of mass k is proportional to k^{-\mu}, a Smoluchowski rate equation approach predicts steady behavior for 01, continuous evolution occurs in which c_k(t)~(\ln t)^{-(2k-1)\mu/2}, while the total island density increases as N(t)~(\ln t)^{\mu/2}. The zodiacal dust complex, a population of dust and small particles that pervades the Solar System, provides important insight into the formation and dynamics of planets, comets, asteroids, and other bodies. Here we present a new set of data obtained using a novel technique: direct measurements of momentum transfer to a spacecraft from individual particle impacts. This technique is made possible by the extreme precision of the instruments flown on the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft, a technology demonstrator for a future space-based gravitational wave observatory that operated near the first Sun-Earth Lagrange point from early 2016 through Summer of 2017. Using a simple model of the impacts and knowledge of the control system, we show that it is possible to detect impacts and measure properties such as the transferred momentum (related to the particle's mass and velocity), direction of travel, and location of impact on the spacecraft. In this paper, we present the results of a systematic search for impacts during 4348 hours of Pathfinder data. We report a total of 54 candidates with momenta ranging from 0.2$\,\mu\textrm{Ns}$ to 230$\,\mu\textrm{Ns}$. We furthermore make a comparison of these candidates with models of micrometeoroid populations in the inner solar system including those resulting from Jupiter-family comets, Oort-cloud comets, Hailey-type comets, and Asteroids. We find that our measured population is consistent with a population dominated by Jupiter-family comets with some evidence for a smaller contribution from Hailey-type comets.
