Stellar-mass black hole binary systems show a strong quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in their Comptonised emission. The frequency of this feature correlates with the ratio of a disc to Comptonised emission. We build a new energy-conserving model of the accretion flow, SSsed, which is based on the previous agnsed with complex Comptonisation. However, it is tuned to suit for stellar black holes by including a colour temperature correction, and allowing a little more freedom in the potential to compensate for uncertainties in relativistic correction depending on the corona shape. The model is applied to hundreds of RXTE data of a black hole binary XTE J1550-564. It constrains the model parameters of the innermost radii of the accretion flow, Rin, the outer radius of a hot inner flow which extends from Rin-Rhot and the outer radius of the softer (probably nonthermal) Comptonisation region extending from Rhot-Rcor. We showed that the outer radius of the combined Comptonised emission regions, Rcor anti-correlates well with the central frequencies of low-frequency QPOs detected during the same observations. The relation is remarkably consistent with the quantitative predictions of Lense-Thirring precession of the entire Comptonisation regions for the assumed system parameters. The origin of the narrow Fe-K�� fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K�� line with ~5.4 �� significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H�� line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K�� line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K�� line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. The Suzaku observation of LMC X-3 gives the best data to date on the shape of the accretion disk spectrum. This is due to the combination of very low absorbing column density along this line of sight which allows the shape of the disk emisison to be constrained at low energies by the CCD's, while the tail can be simultaneously determined up to 30 keV by the high energy detectors. These data clearly demonstrate that the observed disk spectrum is broader than a simple 'sum of blackbodies', and relativistic smearing of the emission is strongly required. However, the intrinsic emission should be more complex than a (color-corrected) sum of blackbodies as it should also contain photo-electric absorption edges from the partially ionised disk photosphere. These are broadened by the relativistic smearing, but the models predict ~ 3-5 per cent deviations for 1/3- 1 solar abundance around the edge energies, significantly stronger than observed. This indicate that the models need to include more physical processes such as self-irradiation, bound-bound (line) absorption, and/or emission from recombination continuua and/or lines. Alternatively, if none of these match the data, it may instead require that the accretion disk density and/or emissivity profile with height is different to that assumed. The black-hole binary Cygnus X-1 was observed for 17 ks with the Suzaku X-ray observatory in 2005 October, while it was in a low/hard state with a 0.7-300 keV luminosity of 4.6 x 10^37 erg/s. The XIS and HXD spectra, spanning 0.7-400 keV, were reproduced successfully incorporating a cool accretion disk and a hot Comptonizing corona. The corona is characterized by an electron temperature of ~100 keV, and two optical depths of ~0.4 and ~1.5 which account for the harder and softer continua, respectively. The disk has the innermost temperature of ~0.2 keV, and is thought to protrude half way into the corona. The disk not only provides seed photons to the Compton cloud, but also produces a soft spectral excess, a mild reflection hump, and a weakly broadened iron line. A comparison with the Suzaku data on GRO J1655-40 reveals several interesting spectral differences, which can mostly be attributed to inclination effects assuming that the disk has a flat geometry while the corona is grossly spherical. An intensity-sorted spectroscopy indicates that the continuum becomes less Comptonized when the source flares up on times scales of 1-200 s, while the underlying disk remains unchanged., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

We report the results from an X-ray and near-infrared observation of the Galactic black hole binary 4U 1630--47 in the very high state, performed with {\it Suzaku} and IRSF around the peak of the 2012 September-October outburst. The X-ray spectrum is approximated by a steep power law, with photon index of 3.2, identifying the source as being in the very high state. A more detailed fit shows that the X-ray continuum is well described by a multi-color disc, together with thermal and non-thermal Comptonization. The inner disc appears slightly truncated by comparison with a previous high/soft state of this source, even taking into account energetic coupling between the disc and corona, although there are uncertainties due to the dust scattering correction. The near-infrared fluxes are higher than the extrapolated disc model, showing that there is a contribution from irradiation in the outer disk and/or the companion star at these wavelengths. Our X-ray spectra do not show the Doppler shifted iron emission lines indicating a baryonic jet which were seen four days previously in an XMM-Newton observation, despite the source being in a similar state. There are also no significant absorption lines from highly ionized irons as are seen in the previous high/soft state data. We show that the increased source luminosity is not enough on its own to make the wind so highly ionized as to be undetectable. This shows that the disc wind has changed in terms of its launch radius and/or density compared to the high/soft state., Comment: accepted for publication in Apj

We report results from a Suzaku observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 NGC 4051. During our observation, large amplitude rapid variability is seen and the averaged 2--10 keV flux is 8.1x10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2, which is several times lower than the historical average. The X-ray spectrum hardens when the source flux becomes lower, confirming the trend of spectral variability known for many Seyfert 1 galaxies. The broad-band averaged spectrum and spectra in high and low flux intervals are analyzed. The spectra are first fitted with a model consisting of a power-law component, a reflection continuum originating in cold matter, a blackbody component, two zones of ionized absorber, and several Gaussian emission lines. The amount of reflection is rather large (R ~ 7, where R=1 corresponds to reflection by an infinite slab), while the equivalent width of the Fe-K line at 6.4 keV is modest (140 eV) for the averaged spectrum. We then model the overall spectra by introducing partial covering for the power-law component and reflection continuum independently. The column density for the former is 1x10^23 cm^-2, while it is fixed at 1x10^24 cm-2 for the latter. (abridged) We review how the recent increase in X-ray and radio data from black hole and neutron star binaries can be merged together with theoretical advances to give a coherent picture of the physics of the accretion flow in strong gravity. Both long term X-ray light curves, X-ray spectra, the rapid X-ray variability and the radio jet behaviour are consistent with a model where a standard outer accretion disc is truncated at low luminosities, being replaced by a hot, inner flow which also acts as the launching site of the jet. Decreasing the disc truncation radius leads to softer spectra, as well as higher frequencies (including QPO's) in the power spectra, and a faster jet. The collapse of the hot flow when the disc reaches the last stable orbit triggers the dramatic decrease in radio flux, as well as giving a qualitative (and often quantitative) explanation for the major hard--soft spectral transition seen in black holes and neutron stars. After collapse of the hot inner flow, the spectrum in black hole systems can be dominated by the disc emission. Its behaviour is consistent with the existence of a last stable orbit, and such data can be used to estimate the black hole spin. These systems can also show very different spectra at these high luminosities, in which the disc spectrum is strongly distorted by Comptonization. The structure of the accretion flow becomes increasingly uncertain as the luminosity approaches (and exceeds) the Eddington luminosity, though there is growing evidence that winds play an important role. (truncated version) The X-ray spectra of Galactic binary systems in the very high state show both strong disk emission and a strong, steep tail to high energies. We use simultaneous optical-ASCA-RXTE data from the black hole transient XTE J1550-564 as a specific example, and show that these have disc spectra which are significantly lower in temperature than those seen from the same source at the same luminosity when in the disc dominated state. If these give a true picture of the disc then either the disc emissivity has reduced, and/or the disc truncates above the last stable orbit. However, it is often assumed that the tail is produced by Compton scattering, in which case its shape in these spectra requires that the Comptonising region is marginally optically thick (tau~2-3), and covers a large fraction of the inner disc. This will distort our view of the disc. We build a theoretical model of a Comptonising corona over an inner disc, and fit this to the data, but find that it still requires a large increase in inner disc radius for a standard disc emissivity. Instead it seems more probable that the disc emissivity changes in the presence of the corona. We implement the specific inner disc-corona coupling model of Svensson & Zdziarski (1994) and show that this can explain the low temperature/high luminosity disc emission seen in the very high state with only a small increase in radius of the disc. While this inferred disc truncation is probably not significant given the model uncertainties, it is consistent with the low frequency QPO and gives continuity of properties with the low/hard state spectra., MNRAS accepted version, with major expansion of the discussion to include comments on comptonisation, extreme broad iron lines and high frequency QPO's. 18 pages, 8 figures

Spectral studies of a luminous X-ray source, NGC 253 X21, are presented based on archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. The Chandra observation on 1999 December 16 detected the source at a bolometric luminosity of 0.3 x 10^39 erg/s (assuming isotropic emission), while an XMM-Newton observation on 2000 June 3 revealed a short-term source variation in the range of (0.6--1.3) x 10^39 erg/s. All spectra from these observations were successfully modeled by emission from an optically thick accretion disk. The average inner disk radius was kept constant at 63 x (cos 60/cos i)^(1/2) km, where i is the disk inclination, and did not vary significantly, while the disk inner temperature changed in the range of 0.9--1.4 keV. Assuming that this object is an accreting Schwarzschild black hole, and that the disk inner radius coincides with its last stable orbit, the mass of the black hole is estimated to be ~ 7 M_sun. The disk luminosity corresponds to (30--120) x (cos 60/cos i) % of the Eddington limit of this black hole. Therefore, this luminous X-ray source, NGC 253 X21, is understood consistently to be an accreting stellar mass black hole in the standard disk state., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We outline a framework for understanding the X-ray spectra of high mass accretion rate stellar black holes based on X-ray data from RXTE and ASCA. Three spectral regimes can be separated out by the behaviour of the observed disk luminosity and temperature. The well established "standard regime" is seen when the disk dominates the spectrum, where only a small fraction of the luminosity is emitted in the power law tail. These spectra generally satisfy the standard relation expected for thermal emission from a constant area, namely that the disk bolometric luminosity, Ldisk, is proportional to its maximum temperature, Tin^4. However, at higher luminosities this starts to change to Tin^2. This "apparently standard regime" is still dominated by the disk emission, but this difference luminosity-temperature relation and subtle changes in spectral shape may show that another cooling process is required in addition to radiative cooling. At intermediate luminosities there is an anomalous regime (or weak very high state) where the disk temperature and luminosity are less clearly related. These spectra are characterized by the presence of a much stronger comptonized tail indicating high energy electrons. When observed disk emission is corrected for the the effects of comptonisation then these points lie back on the standard relation. The growth of this comptonising corona is also clearly linked to the quasi-periodic oscillations, as these are observed preferentially in the anomalous regime. This presented picture was found to explain the spectral behavior of both black hole binaries in our Galaxy and LMC. The Ultra-luminous Compact X-ray Sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies and the Galactic super-luminal jet sources share the common spectral characteristic that they have extremely high disk temperatures which cannot be explained in the framework of the standard accretion disk model in the Schwarzschild metric. We examine several possibilities to solve this ``too-hot'' disk problem. In particular, we have calculated an extreme Kerr disk model to fit the observed spectra. We found that the Kerr disk will become significantly harder compared to the Schwarzschild disk only when the disk is highly inclined. For super-luminal jet sources, which are known to be inclined systems, the Kerr disk model may work if we choose proper values for the black hole angular momentum. For the ULXs, however, the Kerr disk interpretation will be problematic, as it is highly unlikely that their accretion disks are preferentially inclined., Contribution to the 4th INTEGRAL Workshop (2000 September, Alicante, Spain)
