Search

Fundamental stellar parameters such as mass and radius are some of the most important building blocks in astronomy, both when it comes to understanding the star itself and when deriving the properties of any exoplanet(s) they may host. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations allows us to determine these parameters with high precision. We investigate the solar-like oscillations of the red-giant-branch star $γ$ Cep A, which harbours a giant planet on a wide orbit. We did this by utilising both ground-based radial velocities from the SONG network and space-borne photometry from the NASA TESS mission. From the radial velocities and photometric observations, we created a combined power spectrum, which we used in an asteroseismic analysis to extract individual frequencies. We clearly identify several radial and quadrupole modes as well as multiple mixed, dipole modes. We used these frequencies along with spectroscopic and astrometric constraints to model the star, and we find a mass of $1.27^{+0.05}_{-0.07}$ M$_\odot$, a radius of $4.74^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$ R$_\odot$, and an age of $5.7^{+0.8}_{-0.9}$ Gyr. We then used the mass of $γ$ Cep A and our SONG radial velocities to derive masses for $γ$ Cep B and $γ$ Cep Ab of $0.328^{+0.009}_{-0.012}$ M$_\odot$ and $6.6^{+2.3}_{-2.8}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$, respectively., 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

HIRES will be the high-resolution spectrograph at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). It will consist of three fibre-fed spectrographs providing a wavelength coverage of 0.4–1.8 µm (with a goal of 0.35–1.8 µm) at a spectral resolution of ~ 100 000. Fibre-feeding allows HIRES to have several interchangeable observing modes, including a single-conjugate adaptive optics (SCAO) module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. It will therefore be able to operate in both seeing- and diffraction-limited modes. HIRES will address a wide range of science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Some of the top science cases will be the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars (Pop III), tests on the stability of Nature’s fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. Eclipsing binary stars allow derivation of accurate and precise masses and radii. When they reside in star clusters, properties of even higher precision, along with additional information, can be extracted. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations offers similar possibilities for single stars. We improve the previously established properties of the Hyades eclipsing binary HD27130 and re-assess the asteroseismic properties of the giant star $��$ Tau. The physical properties of these members of the Hyades are then used to constrain the helium content and age of the cluster. New multi-colour light curves were combined with multi-epoch radial velocities to yield masses and radii of HD27130. $T_{\rm eff}$ was derived from spectroscopy and photometry, and verified using the Gaia parallax. We estimate the cluster age from re-evaluated asteroseismic properties of $��$ Tau while using HD27130 to constrain the helium content. The masses and radii, and $T_{\rm eff}$ of HD 27130 were found to be $M=1.0245\pm0.0024 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.9226\pm0.015 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=5650\pm50$ K for the primary, and $M=0.7426\pm0.0016 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.7388\pm0.026 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=4300\pm100$ K for the secondary component. Our re-evaluation of $��$ Tau suggests that the previous literature estimates are trustworthy, and that the Hipparcos parallax is more reliable than the Gaia DR2 parallax. The helium content of HD27130 and thus of the Hyades is found to be $Y=0.27$ but with significant model dependence. Correlations with the adopted metallicity results in a robust helium enrichment law with $\frac{��Y}{��Z}$ close to 1.2. We estimate the age of the Hyades to be 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.1 (sys) Gyr in slight tension with recent age estimates based on the cluster white dwarfs. $��$ Cygni is an F3 spectral-type main-sequence star with visual magnitude V=4.48. This star was the brightest star observed by the original Kepler spacecraft mission. Short-cadence (58.8 s) photometric data using a custom aperture were obtained during Quarter 6 (June-September 2010) and subsequently in Quarters 8 and 12-17. We present analyses of the solar-like oscillations based on Q6 and Q8 data, identifying angular degree $l$ = 0, 1, and 2 oscillations in the range 1000-2700 microHz, with a large frequency separation of 83.9 plus/minus 0.4 microHz, and frequency with maximum amplitude 1829 plus/minus 54 microHz. We also present analyses of new ground-based spectroscopic observations, which, when combined with angular diameter measurements from interferometry and Hipparcos parallax, give T_eff = 6697 plus/minus 78 K, radius 1.49 plus/minus 0.03 solar radii, [Fe/H] = -0.02 plus/minus 0.06 dex, and log g = 4.23 plus/minus 0.03. We calculate stellar models matching the constraints using several methods, including using the Yale Rotating Evolution Code and the Asteroseismic Modeling Portal. The best-fit models have masses 1.35-1.39 solar masses and ages 1.0-1.6 Gyr. theta Cyg's T_eff and log g place it cooler than the red edge of the gamma Doradus instability region established from pre-Kepler ground-based observations, but just at the red edge derived from pulsation modeling. The pulsation models show gamma Dor gravity-mode pulsations driven by the convective-blocking mechanism, with frequencies of 1 to 3 cycles/day (11 to 33 microHz). However, gravity modes were not detected in the Kepler data, one signal at 1.776 cycles/day (20.56 microHz) may be attributable to a faint, possibly background, binary. We present the first detections by the NASA K2 Mission of oscillations in solar-type stars, using short-cadence data collected during K2 Campaign\,1 (C1). We understand the asteroseismic detection thresholds for C1-like levels of photometric performance, and we can detect oscillations in subgiants having dominant oscillation frequencies around $1000\,\rm \mu Hz$. Changes to the operation of the fine-guidance sensors are expected to give significant improvements in the high-frequency performance from C3 onwards. A reduction in the excess high-frequency noise by a factor of two-and-a-half in amplitude would bring main-sequence stars with dominant oscillation frequencies as high as ${\simeq 2500}\,\rm \mu Hz$ into play as potential asteroseismic targets for K2., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP; 16 pages, 2 figures

We present photometric observations of four transits in the WASP-17 planetary system, obtained using telescope defocussing techniques and with scatters reaching 0.5 mmag per point. Our revised orbital period is 4.0 +/- 0.6 s longer than previous measurements, a difference of 6.6 sigma, and does not support the published detections of orbital eccentricity in this system. We model the light curves using the JKTEBOP code and calculate the physical properties of the system by recourse to five sets of theoretical stellar model predictions. The resulting planetary radius, Rb = 1.932 +/- 0.052 +/- 0.010 Rjup (statistical and systematic errors respectively), provides confirmation that WASP-17b is the largest planet currently known. All fourteen planets with radii measured to be greater than 1.6 Rjup are found around comparatively hot (Teff > 5900 K) and massive (MA > 1.15 Msun) stars. Chromospheric activity indicators are available for eight of these stars, and all imply a low activity level. The planets have small or zero orbital eccentricities, so tidal effects struggle to explain their large radii. The observed dearth of large planets around small stars may be natural but could also be due to observational biases against deep transits, if these are mistakenly labelled as false positives and so not followed up., 11 pages, 7 tables, 7 figures. Rapid and strong changes in the Blazhko modulation of RR Lyrae stars, as they have recently been detected in high precision satellite data, have become a crucial topic in finding an explanation of the long-standing mystery of the Blazhko effect. We present here an analysis of the most extreme case detected so far, the RRab star V445 Lyr (KIC 6186029) which was observed with the Kepler space mission. V445 Lyr shows very strong cycle-to-cycle changes in its Blazhko modulation, which are caused both by a secondary long-term modulation period as well as irregular variations. In addition to the complex Blazhko modulation, V445 Lyr also shows a rich spectrum of additional peaks in the frequency range between the fundamental pulsation and the first harmonic. Among those peaks, the second radial overtone could be identified, which, combined with a metallicity estimate of [Fe/H]=-2.0 dex from spectroscopy, allowed to constrain the mass (0.55-0.65 M_sun) and luminosity (40-50 L_sun) of V445 Lyr through theoretical Petersen diagrams. A non-radial mode as well as possibly the first overtone are also excited. Furthermore, V445 Lyr shows signs of the period doubling phenomenon and a long term period change. A detailed Fourier analysis along with a study of the O-C variation of V445 Lyr is presented, and the origin of the additional peaks and possible causes of the changes in the Blazhko modulation are discussed. We present a detailed spectroscopic study of 93 solar-type stars that are targets of the NASA/Kepler mission and provide detailed chemical composition of each target. We find that the overall metallicity is well-represented by Fe lines. Relative abundances of light elements (CNO) and alpha-elements are generally higher for low-metallicity stars. Our spectroscopic analysis benefits from the accurately measured surface gravity from the asteroseismic analysis of the Kepler light curves. The log g parameter is known to better than 0.03 dex and is held fixed in the analysis. We compare our Teff determination with a recent colour calibration of V-K (TYCHO V magnitude minus 2MASS Ks magnitude) and find very good agreement and a scatter of only 80 K, showing that for other nearby Kepler targets this index can be used. The asteroseismic log g values agree very well with the classical determination using Fe1-Fe2 balance, although we find a small systematic offset of 0.08 dex (asteroseismic log g values are lower). The abundance patterns of metals, alpha elements, and the light elements (CNO) show that a simple scaling by [Fe/H] is adequate to represent the metallicity of the stars, except for the stars with metallicity below -0.3, where alpha-enhancement becomes important. However, this is only important for a very small fraction of the Kepler sample. We therefore recommend that a simple scaling with [Fe/H] be employed in the asteroseismic analyses of large ensembles of solar-type stars., Comment: MNRAS, in press, 12 pages

The Stellar Observations Network Group (SONG) is an international network project aiming to place eight 1-m robotic telescopes around the globe, with the primary objectives of studying stellar oscillations and planets using ultra-precision radial velocity measurements. The prototype of SONG is scheduled to be installed and running at the Observatorio del Teide by Summer 2011. Nineteen of the ~40 RR Lyr stars in the Kepler field have been identified as candidate non-Blazhko (or unmodulated) stars. In this paper we present the results of Fourier decomposition of the time-series photometry of these stars acquired during the first 417 days of operation (Q0-Q5) of the Kepler telescope. Fourier parameters based on ~18400 long-cadence observations per star (and ~150000 short-cadence observations for FN Lyr and for AW Dra) are derived. None of the stars shows the recently discovered `period-doubling' effect seen in Blazhko variables; however, KIC 7021124 has been found to pulsate simultaneously in the fundamental and second overtone modes with a period ratio P2/P0 ~ 0.59305 and is similar to the double-mode star V350 Lyr. Period change rates are derived from O-C diagrams spanning, in some cases, over 100 years; these are compared with high-precision periods derived from the Kepler data alone. Extant Fourier correlations by Kovacs, Jurcsik et al. (with minor transformations from the V to the Kp passband) have been used to derive underlying physical characteristics for all the stars. This procedure seems to be validated through comparisons of the Kepler variables with galactic and LMC RR Lyr stars. The most metal-poor star in the sample is NR Lyr, with [Fe/H]=-2.3 dex; and the four most metal-rich stars have [Fe/H] ranging from -0.6 to +0.1 dex. Pulsational luminosities and masses are found to be systematically smaller than L and mass values derived from stellar evolution models, and are favoured over the evolutionary values when periods are computed with the Warsaw linear hydrodynamics code. Finally, the Fourier parameters are compared with theoretical values derived using the Warsaw non-linear convective pulsation code., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures

This paper summarizes the main results of our recent study of the non-Blazhko RR Lyrae stars observed with the Kepler space telescope. These stars offer the opportunity for studying the stability of the pulsations of RR Lyrae stars and for providing a reference against which the Blazhko RR Lyrae stars can be compared. Of particular interest is the stability of the low-dispersion (sigma < 1mmag) light curves constructed from ~18,000 long-cadence (30-min) and (for FN Lyr and AW Dra) the ~150,000 short-cadence (1-min) photometric data points. Fourier-based [Fe/H] values and other physical characteristics are also derived. When the observed periods are compared with periods computed with the Warsaw non-linear convective pulsation code better agreement is achieved assuming pulsational L and M values rather than the (higher) evolutionary L and M values., To appear in the Carnegie Observatories Astrophysics Series, volume 5

We present results from the final six months of a survey to search for pulsations in white dwarfs and hot subdwarf stars with the Kepler spacecraft. Spectroscopic observations are used to separate the objects into accurate classes, and we explore the physical parameters of the subdwarf B (sdB) stars and white dwarfs in the sample. From the Kepler photometry and our spectroscopic data, we find that the sample contains 5 new pulsators of the V1093 Her type, one AM CVn type cataclysmic variable, and a number of other binary systems. This completes the survey for compact pulsators with Kepler. No V361 Hya type of short-period pulsating sdB stars were found in this half, leaving us with a total of one single multiperiodic V361 Hya and 13 V1093 Her pulsators for the full survey. Except for the sdB pulsators, no other clearly pulsating hot subdwarfs or white dwarfs were found, although a few low-amplitude candidates still remain. The most interesting targets discovered in this survey will be observed throughout the remainder of the Kepler Mission, providing the most long-term photometric datasets ever made on such compact, evolved stars. Asteroseismic investigations of these datasets will be invaluable in revealing the interior structure of these stars, and will boost our understanding of their evolutionary history., Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have discovered a new rapidly oscillating Ap star among the Kepler Mission target stars, KIC 10195926. This star shows two pulsation modes with periods that are amongst the longest known for roAp stars at 17.1 min and 18.1 min, indicating that the star is near the terminal age main sequence. The principal pulsation mode is an oblique dipole mode that shows a rotationally split frequency septuplet that provides information on the geometry of the mode. The secondary mode also appears to be a dipole mode with a rotationally split triplet, but we are able to show within the improved oblique pulsator model that these two modes cannot have the same axis of pulsation. This is the first time for any pulsating star that evidence has been found for separate pulsation axes for different modes. The two modes are separated in frequency by 55 microHz, which we model as the large separation. The star is an alpha^2 CVn spotted magnetic variable that shows a complex rotational light variation with a period of Prot = 5.68459 d. For the first time for any spotted magnetic star of the upper main sequence, we find clear evidence of light variation with a period of twice the rotation period; i.e. a subharmonic frequency of $\nu_{\rm rot}/2$. We propose that this and other subharmonics are the first observed manifestation of torsional modes in an roAp star. From high resolution spectra we determine Teff = 7400 K, log g = 3.6 and v sin i = 21 km/s. We have found a magnetic pulsation model with fundamental parameters close to these values that reproduces the rotational variations of the two obliquely pulsating modes with different pulsation axes. The star shows overabundances of the rare earth elements, but these are not as extreme as most other roAp stars. We report results of initial work done on selected candidate Cepheids to be observed with the Kepler space telescope. Prior to the launch 40 candidates were selected from previous surveys and databases. The analysis of the first 322 days of Kepler photometry, and recent ground-based follow-up multicolour photometry and spectroscopy allowed us to confirm that one of these stars, V1154 Cyg (KIC 7548061), is indeed a 4.9-d Cepheid. Using the phase lag method we show that this star pulsates in the fundamental mode. New radial velocity data are consistent with previous measurements, suggesting that a long-period binary component is unlikely. No evidence is seen in the ultra-precise, nearly uninterrupted Kepler photometry for nonradial or stochastically excited modes at the micromagnitude level. We present the results of the asteroseismic analysis of the red-giant star KIC 4351319 (TYC 3124-914-1), observed for 30 days in short-cadence mode with the Kepler satellite. The analysis has allowed us to determine the large and small frequency separations, and the frequency of maximum oscillation power. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the observations allowed us to identify 25 independent pulsation modes whose frequencies range approximately from 300 to 500 muHz. The observed oscillation frequencies together with the accurate determination of the atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, gravity and metallicity), provided by additional ground-based spectroscopic observations, enabled us to theoretically interpret the observed oscillation spectrum. KIC 4351319 appears to oscillate with a well defined solar-type p-modes pattern due to radial acoustic modes and non-radial nearly pure p modes. In addition, several non-radial mixed modes have been identified. Theoretical models well reproduce the observed oscillation frequencies and indicate that this star, located at the base of the ascending red-giant branch, is in the hydrogen-shell burning phase, with a mass of about 1.3 solar masses, a radius of about 3.4 solar radii and an age of about 5.6 Gyr. The main parameters of this star have been determined with an unprecedent level of precision for a red-giant star, with uncertainties of 2% for mass, 7% for age, 1% for radius, and 4% for luminosity., To be published on MNRAS. The Kepler Mission has acquired 33.5d of continuous one-minute photometry of KPD 1946+4340, a short-period binary system that consists of an sdB and a white dwarf. In the light curve, eclipses are clearly seen, with the deepest occurring when the compact white dwarf crosses the disc of the sdB (0.4%) and the more shallow ones (0.1%) when the sdB eclipses the white dwarf. As expected, the sdB is deformed by the gravitational field of the white dwarf, which produces an ellipsoidal modulation of the light curve. Spectacularly, a very strong Doppler beaming (aka Doppler boosting) effect is also clearly evident at the 0.1% level. This originates from the sdB's orbital velocity, which we measure to be 164.0\pm1.9 km/s from supporting spectroscopy. We present light curve models that account for all these effects, as well as gravitational lensing. We derive system parameters and uncertainties from the light curve using Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations. Adopting a theoretical white dwarf mass-radius relation, the mass of the subdwarf is found to be 0.47\pm0.03 Msun and the mass of the white dwarf 0.59\pm0.02 Msun. The effective temperature of the white dwarf is 15 900\pm300K. With a spectroscopic effective temperature of Teff = 34 730\pm250K and a surface gravity of log g = 5.43\pm0.04, the sdB is in a shell He burning stage. The detection of Doppler beaming in Kepler light curves potentially allows one to measure radial velocities without the need of spectroscopic data. For the first time, a photometrically observed Doppler beaming amplitude is compared to a spectroscopically established value. The sdB's radial velocity amplitude derived from the photometry 168\pm4 km/s is in perfect agreement with the spectroscopic value. After subtracting our best model for the orbital effects, we searched the residuals for stellar oscillations but did not find any significant pulsation frequencies., Accepted for publication in MNRAS on August 18, 2010

The granulation pattern that we observe on the surface of the Sun is due to hot plasma from the interior rising to the photosphere where it cools down, and descends back into the interior at the edges of granules. This is the visible manifestation of convection taking place in the outer part of the solar convection zone. Because red giants have deeper convection zones and more extended atmospheres than the Sun, we cannot a priori assume that granulation in red giants is a scaled version of solar granulation. Until now, neither observations nor 1D analytical convection models could put constraints on granulation in red giants. However, thanks to asteroseismology, this study can now be performed. The resulting parameters yield physical information about the granulation. We analyze \sim1000 red giants that have been observed by Kepler during 13 months. We fit the power spectra with Harvey-like profiles to retrieve the characteristics of the granulation (time scale tau_gran and power P_gran). We also introduce a new time scale, tau_eff, which takes into account that different slopes are used in the Harvey functions. We search for a correlation between these parameters and the global acoustic-mode parameter (the position of maximum power, nu_max) as well as with stellar parameters (mass, radius, surface gravity (log g) and effective temperature (T_eff)). We show that tau_eff nu_max^{-0.89} and P_gran nu_max^{-1.90}, which is consistent with the theoretical predictions. We find that the granulation time scales of stars that belong to the red clump have similar values while the time scales of stars in the red-giant branch are spread in a wider range. Finally, we show that realistic 3D simulations of the surface convection in stars, spanning the (T_eff, log g)-range of our sample of red giants, match the Kepler observations well in terms of trends., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures. The Kepler mission is providing photometric data of exquisite quality for the asteroseismic study of different classes of pulsating stars. These analyses place particular demands on the pre-processing of the data, over a range of timescales from minutes to months. Here, we describe processing procedures developed by the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium (KASC) to prepare light curves that are optimized for the asteroseismic study of solar-like oscillating stars in which outliers, jumps and drifts are corrected., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 5 pages, 2 figures

Mass loss of red giant branch (RGB) stars is still poorly determined, despite its crucial role in the chemical enrichment of galaxies. Thanks to the recent detection of solar-like oscillations in G-K giants in open clusters with Kepler, we can now directly determine stellar masses for a statistically significant sample of stars in the old open clusters NGC6791 and NGC6819. The aim of this work is to constrain the integrated RGB mass loss by comparing the average mass of stars in the red clump (RC) with that of stars in the low-luminosity portion of the RGB (i.e. stars with L, Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present Kepler satellite photometry of KIC 10661783, a short-period binary star system which shows total eclipses and multi-periodic delta Scuti pulsations. A frequency analysis of the eclipse-subtracted light curve reveals at least 68 frequencies of which 55 or more can be attributed to pulsation modes. The main limitation on this analysis is the frequency resolution within the 27-day short-cadence light curve. Most of the variability signal lies in the frequency range 18 to 31 c/d, with amplitudes between 0.1 and 4 mmag. One harmonic term (2.f) and a few combination frequencies (f_i+f_j) have been detected. From a plot of the residuals versus orbital phase we assign the pulsations to the primary star in the system. The pulsations were removed from the short-cadence data and the light curve was modelled using the Wilson-Devinney code. We are unable to get a perfect fit due to the residual effects of pulsations and also to the treatment of reflection and reprocessing in the light curve model. A model where the secondary star fills its Roche lobe is favoured, which means that KIC 10661783 can be classified as an oEA system. Further photometric and spectroscopic observations will allow the masses and radii of the two stars to be measured to high precision and hundreds of delta Scuti pulsation frequencies to be resolved. This could lead to unique constraints on theoretical models of delta Scuti stars, if the evolutionary history of KIC 10661783 can be accounted for., Comment: 11 pages, 6 tables, 6 figures. SONG (Stellar Observations Network Group) is a global network of 1-m class robotic telescopes that is under development. The SONG prototype will shortly be operational at Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, and first light is expected by December 2011. The main scientific goals of the SONG project are asteroseismology of bright stars and follow-up and characterization of exo-planets by means of precise measurements of stellar surface motions and brightness variations. In the faint star KIC 9700322 observed by the Kepler satellite, 76 frequencies with amplitudes from 14 to 29000 ppm were detected. The two dominant frequencies at 9.79 and 12.57 c/d (113.3 and 145.5 \mu Hz), interpreted to be radial modes, are accompanied by a large number of combination frequencies. A small additional modulation with a 0.16 c/d frequency is also seen; this is interpreted to be the rotation frequency of the star. The corresponding prediction of slow rotation is confirmed by a spectrum from which v sin i = 19 \pm 1 km/s is obtained. The analysis of the spectrum shows that the star is one of the coolest {\delta} Sct variables. We also determine Teff = 6700 \pm 100 K and log g = 3.7 \pm 0.1, compatible with the observed frequencies of the radial modes. Normal solar abundances are found. An \ell = 2 frequency quintuplet is also detected with a frequency separation consistent with predictions from the measured rotation rate. A remarkable result is the absence of additional independent frequencies down to an amplitude limit near 14 ppm, suggesting that the star is stable against most forms of nonradial pulsation. The frequency spectrum of this star emphasizes the need for caution in interpreting low frequencies in {\delta} Sct stars as independent gravity modes. A low frequency peak at 2.7763 c/d in KIC 9700322 is, in fact, the frequency difference between the two dominant modes and is repeated over and over in various frequency combinations involving the two dominant modes. The relative phases of the combination frequencies show a strong correlation with frequency, but the physical significance of this result is not clear.

We present the discovery of nonradial pulsations in a hot subdwarf B star based on 30.5 days of nearly continuous time-series photometry using the \emph{Kepler} spacecraft. KIC 010139564 is found to be a short-period pulsator of the V361 Hya (EC 14026) class with more than 10 independent pulsation modes whose periods range from 130 to 190 seconds. It also shows one periodicity at a period of 3165 seconds. If this periodicity is a high order g-mode, then this star may be the hottest member of the hybrid DW Lyn stars. In addition to the resolved pulsation frequencies, additional periodic variations in the light curve suggest that a significant number of additional pulsation frequencies may be present. The long duration of the run, the extremely high duty cycle, and the well-behaved noise properties allow us to explore the stability of the periodic variations, and to place strong constraints on how many of them are independent stellar oscillation modes. We find that most of the identified periodicities are indeed stable in phase and amplitude, suggesting a rotation period of 2-3 weeks for this star, but further observations are needed to confirm this suspicion., 10 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

2M1938+4603 (KIC 9472174) displays a spectacular light curve dominated by a strong reflection effect and rather shallow, grazing eclipses. The orbital period is 0.126 days, the second longest period yet found for an eclipsing sdB+dM, but still close to the minimum 0.1-d period among such systems. The phase-folded light curve was used to detrend the orbital effects from the dataset, and the resulting amplitude spectrum shows a rich collection of pulsation peaks spanning frequencies from ~50 to 4500 uHz. The presence of a complex pulsation spectrum in both the p-mode and the g-mode regions has never been seen before in a compact pulsator. Eclipsing sdB+dM stars are very rare, with only seven systems known and only one with a pulsating primary. Pulsating stars in eclipsing binaries are especially important since they permit masses derived from seismological model fits to be cross checked with orbital mass constraints. We present a first analysis of this star based on the Kepler 9.7-day commissioning light curve and extensive ground-based photometry and spectroscopy that allow us to set useful bounds on the system parameters. We derive a radial-velocity amplitude K_1 = 65.7 +/- 0.6 km/s, inclination angle i = 69.45 +/- 0.20 degrees, and find that the masses of the components are M_1 = 0.48 +/- 0.03 and M_2 = 0.12 +/- 0.01 solar masses., 5 pages with 3 figures, and 4 appendix pages with 2 figures and 3 tables, submitted to MNRAS

The PLATO satellite mission project is a next generation ESA Cosmic Vision satellite project dedicated to the detection of exo-planets and to asteroseismology of their host-stars using ultra-high precision photometry. The main goal of the PLATO mission is to provide a full statistical analysis of exo-planetary systems around stars that are bright and close enough for detailed follow-up studies. Many aspects concerning the design trade-off of a space-based instrument and its performance can best be tackled through realistic simulations of the expected observations. The complex interplay of various noise sources in the course of the observations made such simulations an indispensable part of the assessment study of the PLATO Payload Consortium. We created an end-to-end CCD simulation software-tool, dubbed PLATOSim, which simulates photometric time-series of CCD images by including realistic models of the CCD and its electronics, the telescope optics, the stellar field, the pointing uncertainty of the satellite (or Attitude Control System [ACS] jitter), and all important natural noise sources. The main questions that were addressed with this simulator were the noise properties of different photometric algorithms, the selection of the optical design, the allowable jitter amplitude, and the expected noise budget of light-curves as a function of the stellar magnitude for different parameter conditions. The results of our simulations showed that the proposed multi-telescope concept of PLATO can fulfil the defined scientific goal of measuring more than 20000 cool dwarfs brighter than mV =11 with a precision better than 27 ppm/h which is essential for the study of earth-like exo-planetary systems using the transit method., 5 pages, submitted for the Proceedings of the 4th HELAS International Conference: Seismological Challenges for Stellar Structure

We report spectroscopic observations for 19 $��$\,Sct candidates observed by the {\it Kepler} satellite both in long and short cadence mode. For all these stars, by using spectral synthesis, we derive the effective temperature, the surface gravity and the projected rotational velocity. An equivalent spectral type classification has been also performed for all stars in the sample. These determinations are fundamental for modelling the frequency spectra that will be extracted from the {\it Kepler} data for asteroseismic inference. For all the 19 stars, we present also periodograms obtained from {\it Kepler} data. We find that all stars show peaks in both low- ($��$\,Dor; g mode) and high-frequency ($��$\,Sct; p mode) regions. Using the amplitudes and considering 5\,c/d as a boundary frequency, we classified 3 stars as pure $��$\,Dor, 4 as $��$\,Dor\,-\,$��$\ hybrid, Sct, 5 as $��$\,Sct\,-\,$��$\,Dor hybrid, and 6 as pure $��$\,Sct. We present our analysis of Kepler observations of 29 RR Lyrae stars, based on 138-d of observation. We report precise pulsation periods for all stars. Nine of these stars had incorrect or unknown periods in the literature. Fourteen of the stars exhibit both amplitude and phase Blazhko modulations, with Blazhko periods ranging from 27.7 to more than 200 days. For V445 Lyr, a longer secondary variation is also observed in addition to its 53.2-d Blazhko period. The unprecedented precision of the Kepler photometry has led to the discovery of the the smallest modulations detected so far. Moreover, additional frequencies beyond the well-known harmonics and Blazhko multiplets have been found. These frequencies are located around the half-integer multiples of the main pulsation frequency for at least three stars. In four stars, these frequencies are close to the first and/or second overtone modes. The amplitudes of these periodicities seem to vary over the Blazhko cycle. V350 Lyr, a non-Blazhko star in our sample, is the first example of a double mode RR Lyrae star that pulsates in its fundamental and second overtone modes., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures 2 tables. We present the discovery of nonradial pulsations in five hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars based on 27 days of nearly continuous time-series photometry using the Kepler spacecraft. We find that every sdB star cooler than $\approx 27\,500\,$K that Kepler has observed (seven so far) is a long-period pulsator of the V1093~Her (PG~1716) class or a hybrid star with both short and long periods. The apparently non-binary long-period and hybrid pulsators are described here. The V1093~Her periods range from one to 4.5~h and are associated with $g-$mode pulsations. Three stars also exhibit short periods indicative of $p-$modes with periods of 2 to 5~m and in addition, these stars exhibit periodicities between both classes from 15 to 45~m. We detect the coolest and longest-period V1093~Her-type pulsator to date, KIC010670103 ($T_eff\approx 20\,900\,$K, $P_max\approx 4.5$~h) as well as a suspected hybrid pulsator, KIC002697388 which is extremely cool ($T_{\rm eff}\approx 23\,900\,$K) and for the first time hybrid pulsators which have larger $g-$mode amplitudes than $p-$mode ones. All of these pulsators are quite rich with many frequencies and we are able to apply asymptotic relationships to associate periodicities with modes for KIC010670103. We present our analysis of the long cadence Kepler data for the well-studied Blazhko star RR Lyr, gathered during the first two quarters of the satellite's observations and covering a total of 127d. Besides being of great importance for our understanding of RR Lyrae stars in general, these RR Lyr data can be regarded as a case study for observations of bright stars with Kepler. Kepler can perform high-precision photometry on targets like RR Lyr, as the saturated flux is conserved to a very high degree. The Kepler data on RR Lyr are revolutionary in several respects. Even with long-cadence sampling (one measurement per 29.4 min), the unprecedented precision (< mmag) of the Kepler photometry allows the study of the star's extreme light curve variations in detail. The multiplet structures at the main frequency and its harmonics, typical for Blazhko stars, are clearly detected up to the quintuplets. For the first time, photometric data of RR Lyr reveal the presence of half-integer frequencies, linked to a period doubling effect. This phenomenon may be connected to the still unexplained Blazhko modulation. Moreover, with three observed Blazhko cycles at our disposal, we observe that there is no exact repetition in the light curve changes from one modulation cycle to the next for RR Lyr. A set of long and nearly continuous observations of alpha Centauri A should allow us to derive an accurate set of asteroseismic constraints to compare to models, and make inferences on the internal structure of our closest stellar neighbour. We intend to improve the knowledge of the interior of alpha Centauri A by determining the nature of its core. We combined the radial velocity time series obtained in May 2001 with three spectrographs in Chile and Australia: CORALIE, UVES, and UCLES. The resulting combined time series has a length of 12.45 days and contains over 10,000 data points and allows to greatly reduce the daily alias peaks in the power spectral window. We detected 44 frequencies that are in good overall agreement with previous studies, and found that 14 of these show possible rotational splittings. New values for the large and small separations have been derived. A comparison with stellar models indicates that the asteroseismic constraints determined in this study allows us to set an upper limit to the amount of convective-core overshooting needed to model stars of mass and metallicity similar to those of alpha Cen A., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, A&A accepted

Comparing models and data of pulsating stars is a powerful way to understand the stellar structure better.��Hyi is an evolved solar-type pulsator with mixed modes in its frequency spectrum, making it very interesting for asteroseismic studies.The goal of this work is to search for the best model of the solar-type star ��Hyi, based on up-to-date non-seismic and seismic data.We present a revised list of frequencies for 33 modes, which we produced by analysing the power spectrum of the published observations again using a new weighting scheme that minimises the daily sidelobes.We ran several grids of evolutionary models with different input parameters and different physics, using the stellar evolutionary code ASTEC.For the models that are inside the observed error box of ��Hyi, we computed their frequencies with the pulsation code ADIPLS.We used two approaches to find the model that oscillates with the frequencies that are closest to the observed frequencies of ��Hyi:(i)we assume that the best model is the one that reproduces the star's interior based on the radial oscillation frequencies alone, to which we have applied the correction for the near-surface effects;(ii)we assume that the best model is the one that produces the lowest value of the chi-square (\chi2), i.e. that minimises the difference between the observed frequencies of all available modes and the model predictions, after all model frequencies are corrected for near-surface effects.We show that after applying this correction to the frequencies of the best models, we can reproduce the observed modes well, including the mixed modes.The model that gives the lowest value of the \chi2 is a post-main-sequence model with a mass of 1.04 MSun and a metallicity slightly lower than that of the Sun.Our results underscore the importance of having individual frequencies to constrain the properties of the stellar model.

We present the results of a 5.5-year CCD photometric campaign that monitored 261 bright, southern, semi-regular variables with relatively precise Hipparcos parallaxes. The data are supplemented with independent photoelectric observations of 34 of the brightest stars, including 11 that were not part of the CCD survey, and a previously unpublished long time-series of VZ Cam. Pulsation periods and amplitudes are established for 247 of these stars, the majority of which have not been determined before. All M giants with sufficient observations for period determination are found to be variable, with 87% of the sample (at S/N >= 7.5) exhibiting multi-periodic behaviour. The period ratios of local SRVs are in excellent agreement with those in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Apparent K-band magnitudes are extracted from multiple NIR catalogues and analysed to determine the most reliable values. We present the results of modelling the subgiant star $��$ Hydri using the seismic observational constraints. We have computed several grids of stellar evolutionary tracks using Aarhus STellar Evolution Code (ASTEC, Christensen-Dalsgaard, 2008a), with and without helium diffusion and settling. For those models on each track that are located at the observationally determined position of $��$ Hydri in the HR diagram, we have calculated the oscillation frequencies using Aarhus adiabatic pulsation package (ADIPLS, Christensen-Dalsgaard, 2008b). Applying the near-surface corrections to the calculated frequencies using the empirical law presented by Kjeldsen et al. (2008), we have compared the corrected model frequencies with the observed frequencies of the star. We show that after correcting the frequencies for the near-surface effects, we have a fairly good fit for both $l$=0 and $l$=2 frequencies. We also have good agreement between the observed and calculated $l$=1 mode frequencies although there is room for improvement in order to fit all the observed mixed modes simultaneously., 4 pages, 3 figures. We have recently developed a new method for adjusting weights to minimize sidelobes in the spectral window. Here we show the results of applying this method to published two-site velocity observations of three stars (alpha Cen A, alpha Cen B and beta Hyi). Compared to our previous method of minimizing sidelobes, which involved adjusting the weights on a night-by-night basis, we find a significant improvement in frequency resolution. Asteroseismology provides a unique tool for studying stellar interiors. Recently p modes have been detected on the bright solar-like star alpha Cen A thanks to high-precision radial-velocity measurements. However a better characterisation of these p modes is clearly needed to constrain theoretical models. We observed alpha Cen A during five nights using the HARPS spectrograph in order to improve our knowledge of the seismic properties of this star. We performed high-precision radial-velocity sequences and computed the acoustic spectrum of alpha Cen A. We identify 34 p modes with angular degree l=0-3 in the frequency range 1.8-2.9 mHz and amplitude range 13-48 cm/s, in agreement with previous seismic studies. We find an enhancement of the frequency scatter with the angular degree l that indicates, considering the high inclination axis of alpha Cen A, rotational splitting and explains the low values of previously suggested mode lifetimes. We also derive new values for the small separations that take the effect of rotational splitting into account . Our seismic study of alpha Cen A leads to a list of now well identified p-mode frequencies and shows the importance of taking the rotation into account in order to properly characterise the p modes even in quite short campaigns., 10 pages, 9 figures. Asteroseismology of stellar clusters is potentially a powerful tool. The assumption of a common age, distance, and chemical composition provides constraints on each cluster member, which significantly improves the asteroseismic output. Driven by this great potential, we carried out multi-site observations aimed at detecting solar-like oscillations in the red giant stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682) (Stello et al. 2006). Here we present the first analysis of our data, which show evidence of excess power in the Fourier spectra, shifting to lower frequencies for more luminous stars, consistent with expectations from oscillations. If the observed power excesses were due to stellar oscillations, this result would show great prospects for asteroseismology in stellar clusters., 2 pages, 2 figures. The study of stellar oscillations - asteroseismology - has revolutionized our understanding of the physical properties of the Sun, and similar potential for other stars has been demonstrated in recent years. In particular, asteroseismic studies can constrain the stellar size, temperature and composition, which are important parameters to our understanding of planetary structure and evolution. This makes asteroseismology a very powerful tool to complement planetary transits. As an example, the transit measurement alone does not give the radius of the planet unless the radius of the host star is known, which again requires a known distance to the system. Transit measurements will therefore often require additional measurements to establish the radius of the planet. With asteroseismology we can determine the radius of a star to very high precision (2-3%) using only the photometric transit measurements. This will be very valuable for a mission such as Kepler, which will produce photometric time series of very high quality., 6 pages, 8 figures, corrected typos. We show evidence that the red giant star ksi Hya has an oscillation mode lifetime, tau, of about 2 days significantly shorter than predicted by theory (tau = 17 days, Houdek & Gough 2002). If this is a general trend of red giants it would limit the prospects of asteroseismology on these stars because of poor coherence of the oscillations., 4 pages, 6 figures. We present an analysis of observations of the bright star Altair (alpha Aql) obtained using the star camera on the Wide-Field Infrared Explorer (WIRE) satellite. Although Altair lies within the delta Scuti instability strip, previous observations have not revealed the presence of oscillations. We present the latest results from our analysis of time resolved spectroscopy of PG 1605+072, a high amplitude pulsating sdB star. The star is believed to have evolved off the extreme horizontal branch, and it is uncertain whether it pulsates in p- or g-modes. Previous studies of PG 1605+072 have found amplitude variation and/or very closely spaced frequencies. We compare our velocity measurements with new simultaneous spectrophotometric measurements and analyse phase differences for the 8 frequencies found in velocity. We report Doppler measurements of alpha Cen A from time-series spectroscopy made with UCLES at the 3.9-m AAT. Velocity measurements of the G2 subgiant beta Hyi with both UCLES and CORALIE show a clear excess of power centred at 1.0 mHz. In the UCLES data we find evidence for a short-lived, high-amplitude oscillation event. We present bisector measurements of the H-alpha line of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star, Alpha-Cir, obtained from dual-site observations with medium-dispersion spectrographs. The velocity amplitude and phase of the principal pulsation mode vary significantly, depending on the height in the H-alpha line, including a phase reversal between the core and the wings of the line. This supports the theory, suggested in Paper I, of a radial pulsational node in the atmosphere of the star. Blending with metal lines partially affects the H-alpha bisector results but probably not enough to explain the phase reversal. We have also detected changes in the equivalent-width of the line during the pulsation, and measured the oscillatory signal as a function of wavelength across the H-alpha region., 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present new spectroscopic and photometric time series observations of the delta Scuti star FG~Vir. We detect the oscillations via changes in the equivalent widths of hydrogen and metal absorption lines. From the ratios between spectroscopic and photometric amplitudes, we assign l values to the eight strongest oscillation modes. In particular, we identify two radial modes (l =0) and find that the main pulsation mode (147 microHz) has l = 1. One of the radial modes (at 140 microHz) is the fundamental, implying that two modes with lower frequencies are g-modes. For the radial modes, we compare frequencies with those calculated from a scaled delta Scuti star model and derive a density 0.1645 +/- 0.0005 rho_sol. We then obtain a distance of 84 +/- 3 pc, in excellent agreement with the Hipparcos value. Finally, we suggest that a 3.5-day variability in all observables (equivalent widths and intensity) is caused by stellar rotation., 12 pages, latex with figures. Accepted by A&A

Following the report of solar-like oscillations in the G0 V star eta Boo (Kjeldsen et al. 1995, AJ 109, 1313), a first attempt to model the observed frequencies was made by Christensen-Dalsgaard et al. (1995, ApJ Letters, in press). This attempt succeeded in reproducing the observed frequency separations, although there remained a difference of about 10 microHz between observed and computed frequencies. In those models, the near-surface region of the star was treated rather crudely. We recently reported strong evidence for solar-like oscillations in the G0 IV star eta Boo (Kjeldsen et al. 1995, AJ 109, 1313). We measured small temperature fluctuations produced by oscillations through their effect on the equivalent widths of the Balmer lines. Here we address several issues that were raised at this conference. In particular, we show a power spectrum made without applying a high-pass filter to the observations. There are no good predictions for the amplitudes expected from solar-like oscillations in other stars. In the absence of a definitive model for convection, which is thought to be the mechanism that excites these oscillations, the amplitudes for both velocity and luminosity measurements must be estimated by scaling from the Sun. In the case of luminosity measurements, even this is difficult because of disagreement over the solar amplitude. This last point has lead us to investigate whether the luminosity amplitude of oscillations (dL/L) can be derived from the velocity amplitude v_osc. Using linear theory and observational data, we show that p-mode oscillations in a large sample of pulsating stars satisfy (dL/L)_bol proportional to v_osc/T_eff. Using this relationship, together with the best estimate of v_osc(Sun) = (23.4 +/- 1.4) cm/s, we estimate the luminosity amplitude of solar oscillations at 550 nm to be dL/L = (4.7 +/- 0.3) ppm. Next we discuss how to scale the amplitude of solar-like (i.e., convectively-powered) oscillations from the Sun to other stars. The only predictions come from model calculations by (Christensen-Dalsgaard & Frandsen, Sol. Phys. 82, 469). However, their grid of stellar models is not dense enough to allow amplitude predictions for an arbitrary star. Nevertheless, although convective theory is complicated, we might expect that the general properties of convection -- including oscillation amplitudes -- should change smoothly through the colour-magnitude diagram. We comment on the potential for continuing asteroseismology of solar-type and red-giant stars in a 2-wheel Kepler Mission. Our main conclusion is that by targeting stars in the ecliptic it should be possible to perform high-quality asteroseismology, as long as favorable scenarios for 2-wheel pointing performance are met. Targeting the ecliptic would potentially facilitate unique science that was not possible in the nominal Mission, notably from the study of clusters that are significantly brighter than those in the Kepler field. Our conclusions are based on predictions of 2-wheel observations made by a space photometry simulator, with information provided by the Kepler Project used as input to describe the degraded pointing scenarios. We find that elevated levels of frequency-dependent noise, consistent with the above scenarios, would have a significant negative impact on our ability to continue asteroseismic studies of solar-like oscillators in the Kepler field. However, the situation may be much more optimistic for observations in the ecliptic, provided that pointing resets of the spacecraft during regular desaturations of the two functioning reaction wheels are accurate at the < 1 arcsec level. This would make it possible to apply a post-hoc analysis that would recover most of the lost photometric precision. Without this post-hoc correction---and the accurate re-pointing it requires---the performance would probably be as poor as in the Kepler-field case. Critical to our conclusions for both fields is the assumed level of pointing noise (in the short-term jitter and the longer-term drift). We suggest that further tests will be needed to clarify our results once more detail and data on the expected pointing performance becomes available, and we offer our assistance in this work., NASA Kepler Mission White Paper; 10 pages, 2 figures

Having started science operations in May 2009, the Kepler photometer has been able to provide exquisite data of solar-like stars. Five out of the 42 stars observed continuously during the survey phase show evidence of oscillations, even though they are rather faint (magnitudes from 10.5 to 12). In this paper, we present an overview of the results of the seismic analysis of 4 of these stars observed during more than eight months., 5 pages, 1 figure.
