We report on the results of our simultaneous observations of three large stellar flares with soft X-rays (SXRs) and an H$\mathrmα$ emission line from two binary systems of RS CVn type. The energies released in the X-ray and H$\mathrmα$ emissions during the flares were $10^{36}$--$10^{38}$ and $10^{35}$--$10^{37}$ erg, respectively. It renders the set of the observations as the first successful simultaneous X-ray/H$\mathrmα$ observations of the stellar flares with energies above $10^{35}$ erg; although the coverage of the H$\mathrmα$ observations of the stellar flares with energies above $10^{35}$ erg; although the coverage of the H$\mathrmα$ observations was limited, with $\sim$10\% of the $e$-folding time in the decay phase of the flares, that of the SXR ones was complete. Combining the obtained physical parameters and those in literature for solar and stellar flares, we obtained a good proportional relation between the emitted energies of X-ray and H$\mathrmα$ emissions for a flare energy range of $10^{29}$--$10^{38}$ erg. The ratio of the H$\mathrmα$-line to bolometric X-ray emissions was $\sim$0.1, where the latter was estimated by converting the observed SXR emission to that in the 0.1--100 keV band according to the best-fitting thin thermal model. We also found that the $e$-folding times of the SXR and H$\mathrmα$ light curves in the decaying phase of a flare are in agreement for a time range of $1$--$10^4$~s. Even very large stellar flares with energies of six orders of magnitude larger than the most energetic solar flares follow the same scaling relationships with solar and much less energetic stellar flares. Synchrotron X-ray emission in young supernova remnants (SNRs) is a powerful diagnostic tool to study the population of high energy electrons accelerated at the shock front and the acceleration process. We performed a spatially resolved spectral analysis of NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the young Kepler's SNR, aiming to study in detail its non-thermal emission in hard X-rays. We selected a set of regions all around the rim of the shell and extracted the corresponding spectra. The spectra were analyzed by adopting a model of synchrotron radiation in the loss-limited regime, to constrain the dependence of the cutoff energy of the synchrotron radiation on the shock velocity. We identify two different regimes of particle acceleration, characterized by different Bohm factors. In the north, where the shock interacts with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM), we found a more efficient acceleration than in the south, where the shock velocity is higher and there are no signs of shock interaction with dense CSM. Our results suggest an enhanced efficiency of the acceleration process in regions where the shock-CSM interaction generates an amplified and turbulent magnetic field. By combining hard X-ray spectra with radio and $\gamma-$ray observations of Kepler's SNR, we modelled the spectral energy distribution. We report on a discovery of an X-ray emitting circumstellar material knot inside the synchrotron dominant supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946. This knot was previously thought to be a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 85), but we realized that it is in fact $\sim$40$^{\prime\prime}$ away from WR 85, indicating no relation to WR 85. We performed high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board XMM-Newton. The RGS spectrum clearly resolves a number of emission lines, such as N Ly$\alpha$, O Ly$\alpha$, Fe XVIII, Ne X, Mg XI, and Si XIII. The spectrum can be well represented by an absorbed thermal emission model with a temperature of $k_{\rm B}T_{\rm e} = 0.65\pm 0.02$ keV. The elemental abundances are obtained to be ${\rm N/H} = 3.5\pm 0.8{\rm \left(N/H\right)_{\odot}}$, ${\rm O/H} = 0.5\pm0.1{\rm \left(O/H\right)_{\odot}}$, ${\rm Ne/H} = 0.9\pm0.1{\rm \left(Ne/H\right)_{\odot}}$, ${\rm Mg/H} = 1.0\pm0.1{\rm \left(Mg/H\right)_{\odot}}$, ${\rm Si/H} = 1.0\pm0.2{\rm \left(Si/H\right)_{\odot}}$, and ${\rm Fe/H} = 1.3\pm0.1{\rm \left(Fe/H\right)_{\odot}}$. The enhanced N abundance with others being about the solar values allows us to infer that this knot is circumstellar material ejected when the progenitor star evolved into a red supergiant. The abundance ratio of N to O is obtained to be $\rm N/O = 6.8_{-2.1}^{+2.5}\left(N/O\right)_{\odot}$. By comparing this to those in outer layers of red supergiant stars expected from stellar evolution simulations, we estimate the initial mass of the progenitor star to be $15\, \rm M_{\odot} \lesssim \rm M \lesssim 20\, \rm M_{\odot}$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Despite their importance, a detailed understanding of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) remains elusive. X-ray measurements of the element distributions in supernova remnants (SNRs) offer important clues for understanding the explosion and nucleosynthesis mechanisms for SNe Ia. However, it is challenging to observe the entire ejecta mass in X-rays for young SNRs, because the central ejecta may not have been heated by the reverse shock yet. Here we present over 200 kilosecond Chandra observations of the Type Ia SNR G344.7-0.1, whose age is old enough for the reverse shock to have reached the SNR center, providing an opportunity to investigate the distribution of the entire ejecta mass. We reveal a clear stratification of heavy elements with a centrally peaked distribution of the Fe ejecta surrounded by intermediate-mass elements (IMEs: Si, S, Ar Ca) with an arc-like structure. The centroid energy of the Fe K emission is marginally lower in the central Fe-rich region than in the outer IME-rich regions, suggesting that the Fe ejecta were shock-heated more recently. These results are consistent with the prediction for standard SN Ia models, where the heavier elements are synthesized in the interior of an exploding white dwarf. We find, however, that the peak location of the Fe K emission is slightly offset to the west with respect to the geometric center of the SNR. We report X-ray spectroscopic results for four giant solar flares occurred on 2005 September 7 (X17.0), 2005 September 8 (X5.4), 2005 September 9 (X6.2), and 2006 December 5 (X9.0), obtained from Earth albedo data with the X-ray imaging spectrometer (XIS) onboard Suzaku. The good energy resolution of the XIS (FWHM$\sim$100 eV) enables us to separate a number of line-like features and detect the underlying continuum emission. These features include Si He$\alpha$, Si Ly$\alpha$, S He$\alpha$, S Ly$\alpha$, Ar He$\alpha$, and Ca He$\alpha$ originating from solar flares as well as fluorescent Ar K$\alpha$ and Ar K$\beta$ from the Earth atmosphere. Absolute elemental abundances (X/H) averaged over the four flares are obtained to be $\sim$2.0 (Ca), $\sim$0.7 (Si), $\sim$0.3 (S), and $\sim$0.9 (Ar) at around flare peaks. This abundance pattern is similar to those of active stars' coronae showing inverse first ionization potential (i-FIP) effects, i.e., elemental abundances decrease with decreasing FIP with a turnover at the low end of FIP. The abundances are almost constant during the flares, with an exception of Si which increases by a factor of $\sim$2 in the decay phase. The evolution of the Si abundance is consistent with a picture that the i-FIP plasma originates from the chromosphere evaporation and then mixes with the surrounding low-FIP biased materials. Flare-to-flare abundance varied by a factor of 2, agreeing with past observations of solar flares. Supernova remnants serve as nearby laboratories relevant to many areas in Astrophysics, from stellar and galaxy evolution to extreme astrophysics and the formation of the heavy elements in the Universe. The Chandra X-ray mission has enabled a giant leap forward in studying both SNRs and their compact stellar remnants on sub-arcsecond scale. However, such high-resolution imaging studies have been mostly limited to the nearby and/or relatively bright objects. There is no question that we are missing a large population, especially in external galaxies. Within our own Galaxy, we are presented with new fundamental questions related to neutron stars' diversity, kicks, relativistic winds and the way these objects interact with, and impact, their host environments. In this white paper, we highlight some of the breakthroughs to be achieved with future X-ray missions (such as the proposed AXIS probe) equipped with sub-arcsecond imaging resolution and an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity., Astro2020 Science White Paper. 9 pages, 2 figures

SN 1006 (G327.6+14.6) was the brightest supernova (SN) witnessed in human history. As of one thousand years later, it stands out as an ideal laboratory to study Type Ia SNe and shocks in supernova remnants (SNRs). The present state of knowledge about SN 1006 is reviewed in this article. No star consistent with a surviving companion expected in the traditional single-degenerate scenario has been found, which favors a double-degenerate scenario for the progenitor of SN 1006. Both unshocked and shocked SN ejecta have been probed through absorption lines in ultraviolet spectra of background sources and thermal X-ray emission, respectively. The absorption studies suggest that the amount of iron is < 0.16 M_sun, which is significantly less than the range for normal SNe Ia. On the other hand, analyses of X-ray data reveal the distribution of shocked ejecta to be highly asymmetric especially for iron. Therefore, most of iron might have escaped from the ultraviolet background sources. Another important aspect with SN 1006 is that it was the first SNR in which synchrotron X-ray emission was detected from shells of the remnant, providing evidence that electrons are accelerated up to ~100 TeV energies at forward shocks. The bilateral symmetry of the synchrotron emission (bright in northeastern and southwestern limbs) is likely due to a polar cap geometry. The broadband (radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray) spectral energy distribution suggests that the gamma-ray emission is predominantly leptonic. The origin of the narrow Fe-K�� fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K�� line with ~5.4 �� significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H�� line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K�� line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K�� line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. A precise measurement of shock velocities is crucial for constraining the mechanism and efficiency of cosmic-ray (CR) acceleration at supernova remnant (SNR) shock fronts. The northeastern rim of the SNR RCW 86 is thought to be a particularly efficient CR acceleration site, owing to the recent result in which an extremely high shock velocity of ~6000 km/s was claimed (Helder et al. 2009). Here we revisit the same SNR rim with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, 11 years after the first observation. This longer baseline than previously available allows us to determine a more accurate proper motion of the nonthermal X-ray filament, revealing a much lower velocity of 3000 \pm 340 km/s (and even slower at a brighter region). Although the value has dropped to a half of that from the previous X-ray measurement, it is still higher than the mean velocity of the H-alpha filaments in this region (~1200 km/s). This discrepancy implies that the filaments bright in nonthermal X-rays and H-alpha emission trace different velocity components, and thus a CR pressure constrained by combining the X-ray kinematics and the H-alpha spectroscopy can easily be overestimated. We also measure the proper motion of the thermal X-ray filament immediately to the south of the nonthermal one. The inferred velocity (720 \pm 360 km/s) is significantly lower than that of the nonthermal filament, suggesting the presence of denser ambient material, possibly a wall formed by a wind from the progenitor, which has drastically slowed down the shock., 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

We report the results of Suzaku observations of the young supernova remnant, Vela Jr.\ (RX J0852.0$-$4622), which is known to emit synchrotron X-rays, as well as TeV gamma-rays. Utilizing 39 Suzaku mapping observation data from Vela Jr., a significant hard X-ray emission is detected with the hard X-ray detector (HXD) from the north-west TeV-emitting region. The X-ray spectrum is well reproduced by a single power-law model with the photon index of 3.15$^{+1.18}_{-1.14}$ in the 12--22 keV band. Compiling this with the soft X-ray spectrum simultaneously observed with the X-ray imaging spectrometer (XIS) onboard Suzaku, we find that the wide-band X-ray spectrum in the 2--22 keV band is reproduced with a single power-law or concave broken power-law model, which are statistically consistent with each other. Whichever the model of a single or broken power-law is appropriate, clearly the spectrum has no rolloff structure. Applying this result to the method introduced in \citet{yama2014}, we find that one-zone synchrotron model with electron spectrum having a power-law plus exponential cutoff may not be applicable to Vela Jr., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report on observations of SN 1006 with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS) on board Suzaku. We firmly detected K-shell emission from Fe, for the first time, and find that the Fe ionization state is quite low. The broad band spectrum extracted from the southeast of the remnant is well fitted with a model consisting of three optically thin thermal non-equilibrium ionization plasmas and a power-law component. Two of the thermal models are highly overabundant in heavy elements and, hence, are likely due to ejecta. These components have different ionization parameters: $n_et \sim 1.4\times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$ s and $n_et \sim 7.7\times 10^8$ cm$^{-3}$ s and it is the later one that produces the Fe-K emission. This suggests that Fe has been heated by the reverse shock more recently than the other elements, consistent with a picture where the ejecta are stratified by composition with Fe in the interior. On the other hand, the third thermal component is assumed to be solar abundance, and we associate it with emission from the interstellar medium (ISM). The electron temperature and ionization parameter are $kT_e \sim $0.5 keV and $n_et \sim 5.8\times 10^9$ cm$^{-3}$ s. The electron temperature is lower than that expected from the shock velocity which suggests a lack of collisionless electron heating at the forward shock. We report the first detection of thermal X-ray line emission from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, the prototype of the small class of synchrotron dominated SNRs. A softness-ratio map generated using XMM-Newton data shows that faint interior regions are softer than bright shell regions. Using Suzaku and deep XMM-Newton observations, we have extracted X-ray spectra from the softest area, finding clear line features at 1 keV and 1.35 keV. These lines can be best explained as Ne Ly-alpha and Mg He-alpha from a thermal emission component. Since the abundance ratios of metals to Fe are much higher than solar values in the thermal component, we attribute the thermal emission to reverse-shocked SN ejecta. We report on a second epoch of Chandra X-ray imaging spectroscopy of the spatially-resolved old nova remnant GK Persei. An ACIS-S3 observation of 97.4 ks was conducted in November 2013 after a lapse of 13.8 years from the last visit in 2000. The X-ray emitting nebula appeared more faint and patchy compared with the first epoch. The flux decline was particularly evident in fainter regions and the mean decline was 30-40 % in the 0.5-1.2 keV energy band. A typical expansion of the brightest part of the remnant was 1.9 arcsec, which corresponds to an expansion rate of 0.14 arcsec yr^{-1}. The soft X-ray spectra extracted from both the 2000 and 2013 data can be explained by a non-equilibrium ionization collisional plasma model convolved with interstellar absorption, though do not allow us to constrain the origin of the flux evolution. The plasma temperature has not significantly evolved since the 2000 epoch and we conclude that the fading of the X-ray emission is due largely to expansion. This implies that recent expansion has been into a lower density medium, a scenario that is qualitatively consistent with the structure of the circumstellar environment photographed soon after the initial explosion more than a century ago. Fainter areas are fading more quickly than brighter areas, indicating that they are fainter because of a lower ambient medium density and consequently more rapid expansion., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal; 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Several young supernova remnants (SNRs), including SN1006, emit synchrotron X-rays in narrow filaments, hereafter thin rims, along their periphery. The widths of these rims imply 50 to 100 $\mu$G fields in the region immediately behind the shock, far larger than expected for the interstellar medium compressed by unmodified shocks, assuming electron radiative losses limit rim widths. However, magnetic-field damping could also produce thin rims. Here we review the literature on rim width calculations, summarizing the case for magnetic-field amplification. We extend these calculations to include an arbitrary power-law dependence of the diffusion coefficient on energy, $D \propto E^{\mu}$. Loss-limited rim widths should shrink with increasing photon energy, while magnetic-damping models predict widths almost independent of photon energy. We use these results to analyze Chandra observations of SN 1006, in particular the southwest limb. We parameterize the full widths at half maximum (FWHM) in terms of energy as FWHM $\propto E^{m_E}_{\gamma}$. Filament widths in SN1006 decrease with energy; $m_E \sim -0.3$ to $-0.8$, implying magnetic field amplification by factors of 10 to 50, above the factor of 4 expected in strong unmodified shocks. For SN 1006, the rapid shrinkage rules out magnetic damping models. It also favors short mean free paths (small diffusion coefficients) and strong dependence of $D$ on energy ($\mu \ge 1$)., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 49 pages, 10 figures

Using the unprecedented spectral resolution of the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton, we reveal dynamics of X-ray--emitting ejecta in the oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A. The RGS spectrum shows prominent K-shell lines, including O VII He_alpha forbidden and resonance, O VIII Ly_alpha, O VIII Ly_beta, and Ne IX He_alpha resonance, from an ejecta knot positionally coincident with an optical oxygen-rich filament (the so-called Omega filament in the northeast of the remnant). We find that the line centroids are blueshifted by 1480+/-140+/-60 km/s (the first and second term errors are measurement and calibration uncertainties, respectively), which is fully consistent with that of the optical Omega filament. Line broadening at 654 eV (corresponding to O VIII Ly_alpha) is obtained to be less than ~0.9 eV, indicating an oxygen temperature of less than ~30 keV. Analysis of XMM-Newton MOS spectra shows an electron temperature of ~0.8 keV and an ionization timescale of ~2e10 cm^-3 s. We show that the oxygen and electron temperatures as well as the ionization timescale can be reconciled if the ejecta knot was heated by a collisionless shock whose velocity is ~600-1200 km/s and was subsequently equilibrated due to Coulomb interactions. The RGS spectrum also shows relatively weak K-shell lines of another ejecta feature located near the northeastern edge of the remnant, from which we measure redward Doppler velocities of 650+/-70+/-60 km/s., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We analyzed the metal distribution of the Cygnus Loop using 14 and 7 pointings observation data obtained by the \textit{Suzaku} and the \textit{XMM-Newton} observatories. The spectral analysis shows that all the spectra are well fitted by the two-$kT_e$ non-equilibrium ionization plasma model as shown by the earlier observations. From the best-fit parameters of the high-$kT_e$ component, we calculated the emission measures about various elements and showed the metal distribution of the ejecta component. We found that the distributions of Si and Fe are centered at the southwest of the geometric center toward the blow-out region. From the best-fit parameters, we also estimated the progenitor mass of the Cygnus Loop from our field of view and the metal rich region with a radius of 25 arcmin from the metal center. The result from the metal circle is similar to that from our entire FOV, which suggests the mixing of the metal. We have observed the south-east (SE) limb of the Cygnus Loop with {\it Suzaku}. Our spatially-resolved spectroscopic study shows that a one-$kT_\mathrm{e}$ non-equilibrium ionization model represents our spectra fairly well. We find that the metal abundances obtained are all depleted relative to the solar values with a positional dependency along the radial direction of the Cygnus Loop. The abundances in the very edge of the limb shows about half the solar value, whereas other regions inside the Loop show about 0.2 times the solar value which has been believed as a typical value for the Cygnus Loop limb. The "enhanced" abundance in the very edge in the SE limb is quite similar to that found in the north-east (NE) limb of the Loop, and thus this is another evidence of abundance inhomogeneity in the limb regions of the Loop. The radio map shows a quite different feature: the NE limb is in the radio bright region while the SE limb shows almost no radio. Therefore, the metal abundance variation in the SE limb can not attribute to the non-thermal emission. The abundance inhomogeneity as well as the metal depletion down to 0.2 times the solar value still remain an open question., 14pages 7figures

We present observations of the North Polar Spur (NPS) using the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) aboard the Suzaku X-ray satellite. The NPS is a large region of enhanced soft X-ray and radio emission projected above the plane of the Galaxy, likely produced by a series of supernovae and stellar winds from the nearby Sco-Cen OB association. The exceptional sensitivity and spectral resolution of the XIS below 1 keV allow unprecedented probing of low-energy spectral lines, including CVI (0.37 keV) and NVII (0.50 keV), and we have detected highly-ionized nitrogen toward the NPS for the first time. For this single pointing toward the brightest 3/4 keV emission (l = 26.8 deg, b = +22.0 deg), the best-fit NPS emission model implies a hot (kT ~ 0.3 keV), collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) plasma with depleted C, O, Ne, Mg, and Fe abundances of less than 0.5 solar, but an enhanced N abundance, with N/O = 4.0 +0.4,-0.5 times solar. The temperature and total thermal energy of the gas suggest heating by one or more supernovae, while the enhanced nitrogen abundance is best explained by enrichment from stellar material that has been processed by the CNO cycle. Due to the time required to develop AGB stars, we conclude that this N/O enhancement cannot be caused by the Sco-Cen OB association, but may result from a previous enrichment episode in the solar neighborhood., 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (2nd Suzaku Special Issue)
