We derive new empirical scaling relations between WISE mid-infrared galaxy photometry and well-determined stellar masses from SED modeling of a suite of optical-infrared photometry provided by the DR4 Catalogue of the GAMA-KiDS-VIKING survey of the southern G23 field. The mid-infrared source extraction and characterization are drawn from the WISE Extended Source Catalogue (WXSC) and the archival ALLWISE catalog, combining both resolved and compact galaxies in the G23 sample to a redshift of 0.15. Three scaling relations are derived: W1 3.4 micron luminosity versus stellar mass, and WISE W1-W2, W1-W3 colors versus mass-to-light ratio (sensitive to a variety of galaxy types from passive to star-forming). For each galaxy in the sample, we then derive the combined stellar mass from these scaling relations, producing Mstellar estimates with better than $\sim$25-30% accuracy for galaxies with $>$10$^{9}$ Msolar and $, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Line ratio diagnostics provide valuable clues on the source of ionizing radiation in galaxies with intense black hole accretion and starbursting events, such as local Seyfert or galaxies at the peak of the star formation history. We aim to provide a reference joint optical and mid-IR analysis for studying AGN identification via line ratios and testing predictions from photoionization models. We obtained homogenous optical spectra with the Southern Africa Large Telescope for 42 Seyfert galaxies with Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy and X-ray to mid-IR multiband data available. After confirming the power of the main optical ([OIII]) and mid-IR ([NeV], [OIV], [NeIII]) emission lines in tracing AGN activity, we explore diagrams based on ratios of optical and mid-IR lines by exploiting photoionization models of different ionizing sources (AGN, star formation and shocks). We find that pure AGN photoionization models are good at reproducing observations of Seyfert galaxies with an AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR (5-40 micron) emission larger than 50 per cent. For targets with a lower AGN contribution these same models do not fully reproduce the observed mid-IR line ratios. Mid-IR ratios like [NeV]/[NeII], [OIV]/[NeII] and [NeIII]/[NeII] show a dependence on the AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR unlike optical line ratios. An additional source of ionization, either from star formation or radiative shocks, can help explain the observations in the mid-IR. Among combinations of optical and mid-IR diagnostics in line ratio diagrams, only those involving the [OI]/Halpha ratio are promising diagnostics for simultaneously unraveling the relative role of AGN, star formation and, shocks. A proper identification of the dominant ionizing source would require the exploitation of analysis tools based on advanced statistical techniques as well as spatially resolved data., 31 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. In this paper, we present our calibrations of the TF relation in the mid-infrared W1 ($3.4μ$m) and W2 ($4.6μ$m) bands, using large samples 848 galaxies and 857 galaxies in the W1 and W2 bands respectively. In this calibration we performed a correction for the cluster population incompleteness bias, and a morphological type correction. The calibration was performed using a new, iterative bivariate fitting procedure. For these calibrations we used the total absolute magnitudes, and HI linewidths $W_{F50}$ derived from the HI global profiles as a measure of the rotational velocities. We then performed two additional calibrations on the same sample using (i) the isophotal magnitudes and (ii) the average rotational velocities measured along the flat sections of the spatially resolved rotation curves of the galaxies, which were obtained from the empirical conversion between rotational velocity definitions. We compared these three calibrations to determine whether the use of isophotal magnitudes, or spatially resolved rotational velocities have a significant impact on the scatter around the TF relations in the W1 and W2 bands. We found that the original calibrations using total magnitudes and \hi linewidths had the smallest total scatters. These calibrations are given by $M_{\rm Tot, W1} = (2.02 \pm 0.44) - (10.08 \pm 0.17)\log_{10}(W_{F50})$ and $M_{\rm Tot, W2} = (2.00 \pm 0.44) - (10.11 \pm 0.17)\log_{10}(W_{F50})$, with associated total scatters of $σ_{W1} = 0.68$ and $σ_{W2} = 0.69$. Finally, we compared our calibrations in the mid-infrared bands with previous calibrations in the near-infrared J, H and K bands and the long-wavelength optical I band, which used the same two corrections. Combining high-fidelity group characterisation from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and source-tailored $z$3), we define a star-forming main-sequence (SFMS), which we use to delineate systems that have moved below the sequence ("quenched" for the purposes of this work). We find that with increasing halo mass, the relative number of late-type systems on the SFMS decreases, with a corresponding increase in early-type, quenched systems at high stellar mass (M$_{\rm stellar}>{10}^{10.5}$ M$_\odot$), consistent with mass quenching. In this note we identify and characterize the ultraviolet-infrared color-magnitude relation of star-forming galaxies. The ultraviolet to mid-infrared flux ratios of star-forming galaxies span over two orders of magnitude and show a clear dependence on absolute magnitude from M_W3 ~ -13 to M_W3 ~ -25, which may present problems for models of galaxy spectral energy distributions that have been largely verified on ~L* galaxies. The color-magnitude relation of star-forming galaxies illustrates the broadband spectral diversity of star-forming galaxies that results from established correlations between the physical properties and mass, including the mass-metallicity relation., Comment: RNAAS, in press, 3 pages, 1 figure

We show that mid-infrared data from the all-sky WISE survey can be used as a robust photometric redshift indicator for powerful radio AGN, in the absence of other spectroscopic or multi-band photometric information. Our work is motivated by a desire to extend the well-known K-z relation for radio galaxies to the wavelength range covered by the all-sky WISE mid-infrared survey. Using the LARGESS radio spectroscopic sample as a training set, and the mid-infrared colour information to classify radio sources, we generate a set of redshift probability distributions for the hosts of high-excitation and low-excitation radio AGN. We test the method using spectroscopic data from several other radio AGN studies, and find good agreement between our WISE-based redshift estimates and published spectroscopic redshifts out to z ~ 1 for galaxies and z ~ 3-4 for radio-loud QSOs. Our chosen method is also compared against other classification methods and found to perform reliably. This technique is likely to be particularly useful in the analysis of upcoming large-area radio surveys with SKA pathfinder telescopes, and our code is publicly available. As a consistency check, we show that our WISE-based redshift estimates for sources in the 843 MHz SUMSS survey reproduce the redshift distribution seen in the CENSORS study up to z ~ 2. Recent spectroscopic observations of a few thousand partially obscured galaxies in the Vela constellation revealed a massive overdensity on supercluster scales straddling the Galactic Equator (l $\sim$ 272.5deg) at $cz \sim 18000$km/s. It remained unrecognised because it is located just beyond the boundaries and volumes of systematic whole-sky redshift and peculiar velocity surveys - and is obscured by the Milky Way. The structure lies close to the apex where residual bulkflows suggest considerable mass excess. The uncovered Vela Supercluster (VSCL) conforms of a confluence of merging walls, but its core remains uncharted. At the thickest foreground dust column densities (|b| < 6 deg) galaxies are not visible and optical spectroscopy is not effective. This precludes a reliable estimate of the mass of VSCL, hence its effect on the cosmic flow field and the peculiar velocity of the Local Group. Only systematic HI-surveys can bridge that gap. We have run simulations and will present early-science observing scenarios with MeerKAT 32 (M32) to complete the census of this dynamically and cosmologically relevant supercluster. M32 has been put forward because this pilot project will also serve as precursor project for HI MeerKAT Large Survey Projects, like Fornax and Laduma. The WISE satellite surveyed the entire sky multiple times in four infrared (IR) wavelengths ($3.4,\ 4.6,\ 12,$ and $22\, ��$m, Wright et al. 2010). This all-sky IR photometric survey makes it possible to leverage many of the large publicly available spectroscopic redshift surveys to measure galaxy properties in the IR. While characterizing the cross-matching of WISE data to a single survey is a straightforward process, doing it with six different redshift surveys takes a fair amount of space to characterize adequately, because each survey has unique caveats and characteristics that need addressing. This work describes a data set that results from matching five public redshift surveys with the AllWISE data release, along with a reanalysis of the data described in Lake et al. 2012. The combined data set has an additional flux limit of $80\,��$Jy ($19.14$ AB mag) in WISE's W1 filter imposed in order to limit it to targets with high completeness and reliable photometry in the AllWISE data set. Consistent analysis of all of the data is only possible if the color bias discussed in Ilbert et al. (2004) is addressed (for example: the techniques explored in the first paper in this series Lake et al. 2017b). The WISE satellite surveyed the entire sky multiple times in four infrared wavelengths (3.4, 4.6, 12, and $22\,��$m; Wright et al. 2010). The unprecedented combination of coverage area and depth gives us the opportunity to measure the luminosity function of galaxies, one of the fundamental quantities in the study of them, at $2.4\ ��$m to an unparalleled level of formal statistical accuracy in the near infrared. The big advantage of measuring luminosity functions at wavelengths in the window $\approx 2$ to $3.5\,��$m is that it correlates more closely to the total stellar mass in galaxies than others. In this paper we report on the parameters for the $2.4\,��$m luminosity function of galaxies obtained from applying the spectroluminosity functional based methods defined in Lake et al. (2017b) to the data sets described in Lake et al. (2017a) using the mean and covariance of $2.4\,��$m normalized SEDs from Lake & Wright (2016). We present HI observations of the Sculptor Group starburst spiral galaxy NGC 253, obtained with the Karoo Array Telescope (KAT-7). KAT-7 is a pathfinder for the SKA precursor MeerKAT, under construction. The short baselines and low system temperature of the telescope make it very sensitive to large scale, low surface brightness emission. The KAT-7 observations detected 33% more flux than previous VLA observations, mainly in the outer parts and in the halo for a total HI mass of $2.1 \pm 0.1$ $\times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$. HI can be found at large distances perpendicular to the plane out to projected distances of ~9-10 kpc away from the nucleus and ~13-14 kpc at the edge of the disk. A novel technique, based on interactive profile fitting, was used to separate the main disk gas from the anomalous (halo) gas. The rotation curve (RC) derived for the HI disk confirms that it is declining in the outer parts, as seen in previous optical Fabry-Perot measurements. As for the anomalous component, its RC has a very shallow gradient in the inner parts and turns over at the same radius as the disk, kinematically lagging by ~100 km/sec. The kinematics of the observed extra planar gas is compatible with an outflow due to the central starburst and galactic fountains in the outer parts. However, the gas kinematics shows no evidence for inflow. Analysis of the near-IR WISE data, shows clearly that the star formation rate (SFR) is compatible with the starburst nature of NGC 253., Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, 8 Tables. We present polarisation properties at $1.4\,$GHz of two separate extragalactic source populations: passive quiescent galaxies and luminous quasar-like galaxies. We use data from the {\it Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer} data to determine the host galaxy population of the polarised extragalactic radio sources. The quiescent galaxies have higher percentage polarisation, smaller radio linear size, and $1.4\,$GHz luminosity of $6\times10^{21}, 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication into MNRAS

The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has completed its all-sky survey at 3.4-22 micron. We merge the WISE data with optical SDSS data and provide a phenomenological characterization of mid-IR, extragalactic sources. WISE is most sensitive at 3.4micron(W1) and least at 22micron(W4). The W1 band probes massive early-type galaxies out to z\gtrsim1. This is more distant than SDSS identified early-type galaxies, consistent with the fact that 28% of 3.4micron sources have faint or no r-band counterparts (r>22.2). In contrast, 92-95% of 12 and 22micron sources have SDSS optical counterparts with r7, but only 18.9% at 22micron with SNR(W4)>5. We show that WISE colors alone are effective in isolating stars (or local early-type galaxies), star-forming galaxies and strong AGN/QSOs at z0.8 and W20.8, W26 (Vega) colors can be used to identify type-2 AGN candidates. The fraction of these type-2 AGN candidates is 1/3rd of all WISE color-selected AGNs. (3) Selection of ULIRGs at z\sim2 with extremely red colors, r-W4>14 or well-detected 22micron sources lacking detections in the 3.4 and 4.6micron bands. The surface density of z~2 r-W4>14 ULIRGs is 0.9+-0.07/deg^2 at SNR(W4)>5 (flux(W4)>=2.5mJy), which is consistent with that inferred from smaller area Spitzer surveys. Optical spectroscopy of a small number of these high-redshift ULIRGs confirms our selection, and reveals a possible trend that optically fainter or r-W4 redder candidates are at higher redshifts., 41 pages, 20 figures, Accepted for publication by the Astronomical Journal

The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Preliminary Data Release Source Catalog contains over 257 million objects. We describe the method used to flag variable source candidates in the Catalog. Using a method based on the chi- square of single-exposure flux measurements, we generated a variability flag for each object, and have identified almost 460,000 candidates sources that exhibit significant flux variability with greater than \sim 7{\sigma} confidence. We discuss the flagging method in detail and describe its benefits and limitations. We also present results from the flagging method, including example light curves of several types of variable sources including Algol-type eclipsing binaries, RR Lyr, W UMa, and a blazar candidate., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 1 appendix

The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) is an extremely capable and efficient black hole finder. We present a simple mid-infrared color criterion, W1-W2 \geq 0.8 (i.e., [3.4]-[4.6] \geq 0.8, Vega), which identifies 61.9 \pm 5.4 AGN candidates per deg2 to a depth of W2 = 15.0. This implies a much larger census of luminous AGN than found by typical wide-area surveys, attributable to the fact that mid-infrared selection identifies both unobscured (type 1) and obscured (type 2) AGN. Optical and soft X-ray surveys alone are highly biased towards only unobscured AGN, while this simple WISE selection likely identifies even heavily obscured, Compton-thick AGN. Using deep, public data in the COSMOS field, we explore the properties of WISE-selected AGN candidates. At the mid-infrared depth considered, 160 uJy at 4.6 microns, this simple criterion identifies 78% of Spitzer mid-infrared AGN candidates according to the criteria of Stern et al. (2005) and the reliability is 95%. We select a close "major-merger candidate" galaxy pair sample in order to calculate the K_{s} luminosity function (LF) and pair fraction representative of the merger/interaction component of galaxy evolution in the local universe. The pair sample (projected separation 5 h$^{-1}$ kpc $\leq$ r $\leq$ 20 h$^{-1}$ kpc, $K_{s}$-band magnitude difference $\Delta$$K_{s}$ $\leq$ 1 mag) is selected by combining the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5). The resulting data set contains 340 galaxies covering 5800 sq. degrees. A stellar mass function is also translated from the LF. A differential pair fraction displays nearly constant fraction of galaxy pairs as a function of galaxy mass from 10$^{9}$ to 10$^{11.5}$ M$_{\sun}$ . The differential pair fraction is less subject to absolute magnitude bias due to survey limitations than the standard total pair fraction. HIZOA J0836-43 is an extreme gas-rich ($M_{\rm{HI}}$=7.5$\times10^{10} M_{\sun}$) disk galaxy which lies hidden behind the strongly obscuring Vela region of the Milky Way. Utilizing observations from the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}, we have found it to be a luminous infrared starburst galaxy with a star formation rate of $\sim 21 M_{\sun} \rm{yr^{-1}}$, arising from exceptionally strong molecular PAH emission ($L_{7.7\micron} = 1.50 \times 10^{9} L_{\odot}$) and far-infrared emission from cold dust. The galaxy exhibits a weak mid-infrared continuum compared to other starforming galaxies and U/LIRGs. This relative lack of emission from small grains suggests atypical interstellar medium conditions compared to other starbursts. We do not detect significant $[$Ne {\sc v}$]$ or $[$O {\sc iv}$]$, which implies an absent or very weak AGN. The galaxy possesses a prominent bulge of evolved stars and a stellar mass of 4.4($\pm$1.4)$\times10^{10} M_{\sun}$. With its plentiful gas supply and current star formation rate, a doubling of stellar mass would occur on a timescale of $\sim$2 Gyr. Compared to local galaxies, HIZOA J0836-43 appears to be a "scaled-up" spiral undergoing inside-out formation, possibly resembling stellar disk building processes at intermediate redshifts., 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in ApJL: August 25 2008. We present specific Star Formation Rate (sSFR) radial profiles for a sample of 161 relatively face-on spiral galaxies from the GALEX Atlas of Nearby Galaxies. The sSFR profiles are derived from GALEX & 2MASS (FUV-K) color profiles after a proper SFR calibration of the UV luminosity and K-band mass-to-light ratio are adopted. The (FUV-K) profiles were first corrected for foreground Galactic extinction and later for internal extinction using the ratio of the total-infrared (TIR) to FUV emission. For those objects where TIR-to-FUV-ratio radial profiles were not available, the (FUV-NUV) color profiles as a measure of the UV slope. The sSFR radial gradients derived from these profiles allow us to quantify the inside-out scenario for the growth of spiral disks for the first time in the local Universe. We find a large dispersion in the slope of the sSFR profiles with a slightly positive mean value, which implies a moderate inside-out disk formation. There is also a strong dependency of the value of this slope on the luminosity and size of the disks, with large systems showing a uniform, slightly positive slope in almost all cases and low-luminosity small disks showing a large dispersion with both positive and negative large values. While a majority of the galaxies can be interpreted as forming stars gradually either from inside out or from outside in, a few disks require episodes of enhanced recent growth with scale lengths of the SFR (or gas infall) being significantly larger at present than in the past. Using the large multi-wavelength data set in the chandra/SWIRE Survey (0.6 square degrees in the Lockman Hole), we show evidence for the existence of highly obscured (Compton-thick) AGN, estimate a lower limit to their surface density and characterize their multi-wavelength properties. Two independent selection methods based on the X-ray and infrared spectral properties are presented. The two selected samples contain 1) 5 X-ray sources with hard X-ray spectra and column densities > 10^24 cm-2, and 2) 120 infrared sources with red and AGN-dominated infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We estimate a surface density of at least 25 Compton-thick AGN per square degree detected in the infrared in the chandra/SWIRE field of which ~40% show distinct AGN signatures in their optical/near-infrared SEDs, the remainings being dominated by the host-galaxy emission. Only ~33% of all Compton-thick AGN are detected in the X-rays at our depth (F(0.3-8 keV)>10^-15 erg/cm2/s. We report the discovery of two sources in our sample of Compton-thick AGN, SWIRE_J104409.95+585224.8 (z=2.54) and SWIRE_J104406.30+583954.1 (z=2.43), which are the most luminous Compton-thick AGN at high-z currently known. We present results of a morphological analysis of a small subset of the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) galaxy population. The analysis is based on public ACS data taken inside the SWIRE N1 field, which are the deepest optical high-resolution imaging available within the SWIRE fields as of today. Our reference sample includes 156 galaxies detected by both ACS and SWIRE. Among the various galaxy morphologies, we disentangle two main classes, spheroids (or bulge-dominated galaxies) and disk-dominated ones, for which we compute the number counts as a function of flux. We then limit our sample to objects with IRAC fluxes brighter than 10 microJy, estimated ~90% completeness limit of the SWIRE catalogues, and compare the observed counts to model predictions. We find that the observed counts of the spheroidal population agree with the expectations of a hierarchical model while a monolithic scenario predicts steeper counts. Both scenaria, however, under-predict the number of late-type galaxies. These observations show that the large majority (close to 80 per cent) of the 3.6 and 4.5 micron galaxy population, even at these moderately faint fluxes, is dominated by spiral and irregular galaxies or mergers., 14 pages, 11 figures, accapted for publication in MNRAS

An all-sky catalog of 18020 disc-like galaxies is presented. The galaxies are selected from the Extended Source Catalog of the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (XSC 2MASS) basing on their 2MASS axial ratio a/b >= 3. The Catalog contains data on magnitudes of a galaxy in the J, H, K_s bands, its axial ratio, positional angle, index of luminosity concentration, as well as identification of the galaxy with the LEDA and the NED databases. We determine a firm lower limit to the bar fraction of 0.58 in the nearby universe using J+H+Ks-band images for 134 spirals from 2MASS. With a mean deprojected semi-major axis of 5.1 kpc, and a mean deprojected ellipticity of 0.45 this local bar sample lays the ground work for studies on bar formation and evolution at high redshift., In the proceedings "Penetrating Bars through Masks of Cosmic Dust: The Hubble Tuning Fork strikes a New Note"

An analysis of the NICMOS Deep Field shows that there is no evidence of a decline in the bar fraction beyond z~0.7, as previously claimed; both bandshifting and spatial resolution must be taken into account when evaluating the evolution of the bar fraction. Two main caveats of this study were a lack of a proper comparison sample at low redshifts and a larger number of galaxies at high redshifts. We address these caveats using two new studies. For a proper local sample, we have analyzed 134 spirals in the near-infrared using 2MASS (main results presented by Menendez-Delmestre in this volume) which serves as an ideal anchor for the low-redshift Universe. In addition to measuring the mean bar properties, we find that bar size is correlated with galaxy size and brightness, but the bar ellipticity is not correlated with these galaxy properties. The bar length is not correlated with the bar ellipticity. For larger high redshift samples we analyze the bar fraction from the 2-square degree COSMOS ACS survey. Three nearby galaxies which have abnormally high infrared to radio continuum ratios, NGC 1377, IC 1953 and NGC 4491, are investigated with a view to understanding the physical origin of their peculiarity. We review the existing data and present new radio continuum measurements along with near-infrared integral-field spectroscopy and molecular gas observations. The three galaxies have low luminosities but starburst-like infrared colors; in NGC 1377, no synchrotron emission is detected at any wavelength; in IC 1953, the observed synchrotron component is attributable to the spiral disk alone, and is lacking in the central regions; the radio spectrum of NGC 4491 is unusually flat. We also compare and contrast them with NGC 4418, a heavily extinguished galaxy which shares some attributes with them. After examining various scenarios, we conclude that these galaxies are most likely observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least ~ 100 Myr. This starburst, while heating the dust, has not produced optical signatures nor a normal amount of cosmic rays yet. The 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) is a spectroscopic survey of the entire southern sky with $|b|>10��$, based on the 2MASS near infrared galaxy catalog. It is conducted with the 6dF multi-fiber spectrograph attached to the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope. The survey will produce redshifts for some 170,000 galaxies, and peculiar velocities for about 15,000 and is expected to be complete by June 2005., 8 pages, 4 figures, IAU 8th Asian-Pacific Regional Metting

We report on an infrared 1 to 17 micron study of the nearby (cz = 4600 km/s) interacting spiral galaxy system, UGC 12914/12915, using the ground-based Palomar 200" telescope and PFIRCAM near-infrared detector and space-based mid-infrared imaging and spectral observations using ISOCAM and Phot-S on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Strong line emission from aromatic band features at 6.2, 7.7 and 11.3 microns are seen in both the mid-IR imaging and Phot-S spectro-photometry centered on the nuclei. In the connecting bridge, the mid-infrared imaging reveals dust grains intermixed with the atomic hydrogen gas. The heating mechanism for the hot dust is likely to be UV photons diffusing out from the galactic disks and the H II complex located along the extreme northeastern portion of the bridge: The dust emission, or mid-infrared intensity per atomic hydrogen column density ratio, is consistent with heating from the local (bridge) interstellar radiation field., Comment: see http://spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/jarrett/papers/vv254/

We present near-infrared J (1.25um), H (1.65um), and Ks (2.17um) imaging of the entire supernova remnant IC 443 from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) LWS observations of [O I]. Near-infrared emission from IC 443 was detected in all three bands from most of the optically bright parts of the remnant, revealing a shell-like morphology, with bright Ks band emission along the southern ridge and bright J and H along the northeastern rim. The color and morphological structure are very different between the northeastern and southern parts. J and H band emission from the northeast rim is comparably bright and can be explained mostly by [Fe~II] line emission. The southern ridge is dominated by Ks band light exhibiting a clumped and knotty structure. Molecular hydrogen lines can explain most of K$_s$ band and at least half of J and H band emission in the south. Hence, the prominent broad-band color differences arise from physically different mechanisms: atomic fine structure lines along the northeastern rim and molecular ro-vibrational lines along the southern ridge. We present an analysis of the mid-infrared WISE sources seen within the equatorial GAMA G12 field, located in the North Galactic Cap. Our motivation is to study and characterize the behavior of WISE source populations in anticipation of the deep multi-wavelength surveys that will define the next decade, with the principal science goal of mapping the 3D large scale structures and determining the global physical attributes of the host galaxies. In combination with cosmological redshifts, we identify galaxies from their WISE W1 3.4um resolved emission, and by performing a star-galaxy separation using apparent magnitude, colors and statistical modeling of star-counts. The resultant galaxy catalog has ~590,000 sources in 60 deg^2, reaching a W1 5-sigma depth of 31 uJy. At the faint end, where redshifts are not available, we employ a luminosity function analysis to show that approximately 27% of all WISE extragalactic sources to a limit of 17.5 mag (31 uJy) are at high redshift, z > 1. The spatial distribution is investigated using two-point correlation functions and a 3D source density characterization at 5 Mpc and 20 Mpc scales. For angular distributions, we find brighter and more massive sources are strongly clustered relative to fainter and lower mass source; likewise, based on WISE colors, spheroidal galaxies have the strongest clustering, while late-type disk galaxies have the lowest clustering amplitudes. Along the radial direction, the strongest clustering is in the largest redshift shell, while the weakest is in the nearest redshift shell, consistent with the stellar mass and morphological type dependency results. In three dimensions, we find a number of distinct groupings, often bridged by filaments and super-structures. Dust extinction and stellar confusion of the Milky Way hinder the detection of galaxies at low Galactic latitude, creating the so-called Zone of Avoidance (ZoA). This has hampered our understanding of the local dynamics, cosmic flow fields and the origin of the Cosmic Microwave Background dipole. The ZoA ($|b| \le 5^\circ$) is also excluded from the "whole-sky" Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) Redshift Survey (2MRS) and 2MASS Tully-Fisher Survey (2MTF). The latter aims to provide distances and peculiar velocities for all bright inclined 2MASS galaxies with $K_s^o$ $\leq 11\hbox{$.\!\!^{\rm m}$}25$. Correspondingly, knowledge about the density distribution in the ZoA remains limited to statistical interpolations. To improve on this bias we pursued two different surveys to fill in the southern and northern ZoA. These data will allow a direct measurement of galaxy peculiar velocities. In this paper we will present a newly derived optimized Tully-Fisher (TF) relation that allow accurate measures of galaxy distances and peculiar velocities for dust-obscured galaxies. We estimate the flux weighted acceleration on the Local Group (LG) from the near-infrared Two Micron All Sky Redshift Survey (2MRS). The near-infrared flux weighted dipoles are very robust because they closely approximate a mass weighted dipole, bypassing the effects of redshift distortions and require no preferred reference frame. We use this method with the redshift information to determine the change in dipole with distance. The LG dipole seemingly converges by 60 Mpc/h. Assuming convergence, the comparison of the 2MRS flux dipole and the CMB dipole provides a value for the combination of the mass density and luminosity bias parameters Omega_m^0.6/b_L= 0.40+/-0.09., 4 pages, 2 figures, Contribution to Rencontres de Moriond: Contents and Structures of the Universe, March 18-25, 2006, La Thuile

Galaxies uncovered in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) with deep optical searches are compared to the distribution of objects in the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog (2MASX). While the galaxy density of optical surveys is strongly correlated to the dust content, and become ineffective in uncovering the galaxy distribution at A_B > 3.0 mag, this effect is much less severe in the NIR. Galaxies can be identified in 2MASS at optical extinction layers of over 10mag. However, star density has been found to be the dominant limiting factor in the NIR in the wider Galactic Bulge region (see Fig. 4) where optical surveys still do quite well. Systematic positional offsets have also been found between objects in the 2MASX and the optical ZOA as well as other galaxy catalogs. These seem to have their origin in the astrometric reference frame used by these surveys as well as different fitting algorithms when determining positions (details are given in the Appendix). The astrometric offsets between 2MASX and more recent galaxy catalogs (or on the Digitized Sky Survey remeasured positions) are of the order of 1 - 1.5 arcsec, comparable to the relative dispersion in positions between these surveys. We present a machine-learning photometric redshift analysis of the Kilo-Degree Survey Data Release 3, using two neural-network based techniques: ANNz2 and MLPQNA. Despite limited coverage of spectroscopic training sets, these ML codes provide photo-zs of quality comparable to, if not better than, those from the BPZ code, at least up to zphot, A&A, in press. Quadruply lensed quasars are extremely rare objects, but incredibly powerful cosmological tools. Only few dozen are known in the whole sky. Here we present the spectroscopic confirmation of two new quadruplets WG0214-2105 and WG2100-4452 discovered by Agnello & Spiniello (2018) within the Dark Energy Survey (DES) public footprints. We have conducted spectroscopic follow-up of these systems with the Southern African Large Telescope as part of a program that aims at confirming the largest possible number of optically selected strong gravitational lensing systems in the Equatorial and Southern Hemisphere. For both systems, we present the spectra for the sources and deflectors that allowed us to estimate the source redshifts and unambiguously confirm their lensing nature. For the brighter deflector (WG2100-4452), we measure the stellar velocity dispersion from the spectrum. We also obtain photometry for both lenses, directly from DES multi-band images, isolating the lens galaxies from the quasar images. One of the quadruplets, WG0214-2105, was also observed by Pan-STARRS, allowing us to estimate the apparent brightness of each quasar image at two different epochs, and thus to find evidence for flux variability. This result could suggest a microlensing event for the faintest components, although intrinsic variability cannot be excluded with only two epochs. Finally, we present simple lens models for both quadruplets, obtaining Einstein radii, SIE velocity dispersions, ellipticities, and position angles of the lens systems, as well as time delay predictions assuming a concordance cosmological model., Submitted to MNRAS, 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables.
