Search

Large statistical samples of quasar spectra have previously indicated possible cosmological variations in the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$. A smaller sample of higher signal-to-noise ratio spectra, with dedicated calibration, would allow a detailed test of this evidence. Towards that end, we observed equatorial quasar HS 1549$+$1919 with three telescopes: the Very Large Telescope, Keck and, for the first time in such analyses, Subaru. By directly comparing these spectra to each other, and by `supercalibrating' them using asteroid and iodine-cell tests, we detected and removed long-range distortions of the quasar spectra's wavelength scales which would have caused significant systematic errors in our $\alpha$ measurements. For each telescope we measure the relative deviation in $\alpha$ from the current laboratory value, $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$, in 3 absorption systems at redshifts $z_{\mathrm{abs}}=1.143$, 1.342, and 1.802. The nine measurements of $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$ are all consistent with zero at the 2-$\sigma$ level, with 1-$\sigma$ statistical (systematic) uncertainties 5.6--24 (1.8--7.0) parts per million (ppm). They are also consistent with each other at the 1-$\sigma$ level, allowing us to form a combined value for each telescope and, finally, a single value for this line of sight: $\Delta\alpha/\alpha=-5.4 \pm 3.3_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 1.5_{\mathrm{sys}}$ ppm, consistent with both zero and previous, large samples. We also average all Large Programme results measuring $\Delta\alpha/\alpha=-0.6 \pm 1.9_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.9_{\mathrm{sys}}$ ppm. Absorption-line systems detected in high resolution quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of dimensionless fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant, alpha, and the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu = m_p/m_e, as measured in remote regions of the Universe to their value today on Earth. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations in alpha on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of 10 ppm . We are conducting a Large Programme of observations with VLT UVES to explore these variations. We here provide a general overview of the Large Programme and report on the first results for these two constants, discussed in detail in Molaro et al. and Rahmani et al. A stringent bound for Delta(alpha)/Alpha is obtained for the absorber at_abs = 1.6919 towards HE 2217-2818. The absorption profile is complex with several very narrow features, and is modeled with 32 velocity components. The relative variation in alpha in this system is +1.3+-2.4_{stat}+-1.0_{sys} ppm if Al II lambda 1670AA and three Fe II transitions are used, and +1.1+-2.6_{stat} ppm in a lightly different analysis with only Fe II transitions used. The expectation at this sky position of the recently-reported dipolar variation of alpha is (3.2--5.4)+-1.7 ppm depending on dipole model. This constraint of Delta(alpha)/alpha at face value is not supporting this expectation but is not inconsistent with it at the 3 sigma level. For the proton-to-electron mass ratio the analysis of the H_2 absorption lines of the z_{abs}~2.4018 damped Ly alpha system towards HE 0027- 1836 provides Delta(mu)/mu = (-7.6 +- 8.1_{stat} +- 6.3_{sys}) ppm which is also consistent with a null variation. We present an accurate analysis of the H2 absorption lines from the zabs ~ 2.4018 damped Ly�� system towards HE 0027-1836 observed with the Very Large Telescope Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (VLT/UVES) as a part of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme "The UVES large programme for testing fundamental physics" to constrain the variation of proton-to-electron mass ratio, �� = mp/me. We perform cross-correlation analysis between 19 individual exposures taken over three years and the combined spectrum to check the wavelength calibration stability. We notice the presence of a possible wavelength dependent velocity drift especially in the data taken in 2012. We use available asteroids spectra taken with UVES close to our observations to confirm and quantify this effect. We consider single and two component Voigt profiles to model the observed H2 absorption profiles. We use both linear regression analysis and Voigt profile fitting where ����/�� is explicitly considered as an additional fitting parameter. The two component model is marginally favored by the statistical indicators and we get ����/�� = (-2.5 +/- 8.1(stat) +/- 6.2(sys)) ppm. When we apply the correction to the wavelength dependent velocity drift we find ����/�� = (-7.6 +/- 8.1(stat) +/- 6.3(sys)) ppm. It will be important to check the extent to which the velocity drift we notice in this study is present in UVES data used for previous ����/�� measurements., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context. X-shooter is the first second-generation instrument to become operative at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). It is a broad-band medium-resolution spectrograph designed with gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectroscopy as one of its main science drivers. Aims. During the first commissioning night on sky with the instrument fully assembled, X-shooter observed the afterglow of GRB 090313 as a demonstration of the instrument's capabilities. Methods. GRB 090313 was observed almost two days after the burst onset, when the object had already faded to R~21.6. Furthermore, the 90% illuminated Moon was just 30 degrees away from the field. In spite of the adverse conditions, we obtained a spectrum that, for the first time in GRB research, covers simultaneously the range from 5700 to 23000 Angstroms. Results. The spectrum shows multiple absorption features at a redshift of 3.3736, the redshift of the GRB. These features are composed of 3 components with different ionisation levels and velocities. Some of the features have never been observed before in a GRB at such a high redshift. Furthermore, we detect two intervening systems at redshifts of 1.8005 and 1.9597. Conclusions. These results demonstrate the potential of X-shooter in the GRB field, as it was capable of observing a GRB down to a magnitude limit that would include 72% of long GRB afterglows 2 hours after the burst onset. Coupled with the rapid response mode available at VLT, allowing reaction times of just a few minutes, X-shooter constitutes an important leap forward on medium resolution spectroscopic studies of GRBs, their host galaxies and intervening systems, probing the early history of the Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics on the 20 January. 8 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

We present deep and accurate Near-Infrared (NIR) photometry of the Galactic Globular Cluster (GC) Omega Cen. Data were collected using the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator (MAD) on VLT (ESO). The unprecedented quality of the images provided the opportunity to perform accurate photometry in the central crowded regions. X-shooter is the first second-generation instrument for the ESO Very Large Telescope and will be installed in 2008. CODEX, a high resolution, super-stable spectrograph to be fed by the E-ELT, the most powerful telescope ever conceived, will for the first time provide the possibility of directly measuring the change of the expansion rate of the Universe with time and much more, from the variability of fundamental constants to the search for other earths. A study for the implementation at the VLT of a precursor of CODEX, dubbed ESPRESSO, is presently carried out by a collaboration including ESO, IAC, INAF, IoA Cambridge and Observatoire de Geneve. We probe the evolution of the fine-structure constant, alpha, with cosmic time. Accurate positions of the FeII lines 1608, 2382,and 2600 A are measured in the z = 1.84 absorption system from a high-resolution (FWHM = 3.8 km/s) and high signal-to-noise (S/N >= 100) spectrum of the quasar Q1101-264 (z_em = 2.15, V = 16.0), integrated for 15.4 hours. The Single Ion Differential alpha Measurement (SIDAM) procedure and the Delta chi^2 method are used to set constraints on Delta alpha/alpha. We have found a relative radial velocity shift between the 1608 A and 2382,2600 A lines of Delta v = -180 +/- 85 m/s (both random and systematic errors are included), which, if real, would correspond to Delta alpha/alpha = (5.4 +/- 2.5) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). Considering the strong implications of a such variability, additional observations with comparable accuracy at redshift z ~ 1.8 are required to confirm this result., 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication as a research note in A&A

We studied the bulge and the disk kinematic of the giant Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy ESO 323-G064 in order to investigate its dynamics and its Dark Matter (DM) content. We observed the galaxy with the integral field spectroscopy (VLT/VIMOS, in IFU configuration). Verification of theoretical predictions of an oscillating behavior of the fine-structure constant alpha with cosmic time requires high precision Delta alpha/alpha measurements at individual redshifts, while in earlier studies the mean Delta alpha/alpha values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met via the single ion differential alpha measurement (SIDAM) procedure proposed in Levshakov et al. (2005). We apply the SIDAM to the FeII lines associated with the damped Ly-alpha system observed at z=1.15 in the spectrum of HE0515-4414. The weighted mean calculated on base of carefully selected 34 FeII pairs {1608,X} (X = 2344, 2374, and 2586 A) is = (-0.07+/-0.84) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). The precision of this estimate improves by a factor 2 the previous one reported for the same system by Quast et al. (2004). [abr] We report the analysis of three galaxies selected in the Hubble Deep Field South at Ks3. We have used population synthesis models to constrain their redshifts and their stellar masses. One galaxy is at redshift z_p~2.4 while the other two are at z_p~2.9-3.0. All three galaxies have already assembled a stellar mass of about 10^{11} M_sun at the observed redshift placing the possible merging event of their formation at z>3.5. The inferred mass weighted age of their stellar populations implies that the bulk of the stars formed at z_f>3.5. The resulting co-moving density of M_{stars}>10^{11} M_sun galaxies at ~2.7 is rho=1.2(+-0.7)x10^{-4} Mpc^{-3}, about a factor two higher than the predictions of hierarchical models. The comparison with the local density of galaxies implies that the three galaxies must have already formed most of their stellar mass and that they cannot follow an evolution significantly different from a passive aging.The comparison with the density of local L>L* early types (passively evolved galaxies) suggests that their co-moving density cannot decrease by more than a factor 2.5-3 from z=0 to z~3 and that up to 40% of the stellar mass content of bright (L>L*) local early type galaxies was already in place at z>2.5., 10 pages, 5 figures. We use a deep K(AB)2 is 20^{+20}_{-5} % of the local value. In the mass--limited subsample at z>2, the fraction of passively fading galaxies is at most 25%, although they can contribute up to about 40% of the stellar mass density. On the other hand, star--forming galaxies at z>2 form stars with an average specific rate at least ~4 x10^{-10} yr$^{-1}$, 3 times higher than the z2., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJLetters

By means of detailed chemical evolution models for galaxies of different morphological types (i.e. spirals, irregular/starburst galaxies and ellipticals) we study the nature of Damped Lyman-Alpha systems. Our concern is to infer which systems represent likely candidates for the DLA population and which do not. By focusing on individual systems, we can derive some constraints on both the nature of the associated galaxy and its age. Our results indicate that, owing to their high metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios, big spheroids represent unlikely DLA candidates whereas spirals (observed at different galactocentric distances) and irregulars are ideal sites where DLA absorptions can occur., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, in Carnegie Observatories Astrophysics Series, Vol. 4: Origin and Evolution of the Elements, ed. We analyze the z=2 Ly-alpha and CIV forest along two adjacent lines-of-sight at high S/N and spectral resolution to assess the question of the origin of metals in the intergalactic medium. We find that the gas containing detectable amounts of metals (as seen in absorption by CIV) is less quiescent on scales of a few kpc than the gas without metals. Although it is difficult to discriminate unequivocally between possible sources of enrichment and the extent to which each contributes to line-of-sight differences, those suggest that the metal-enriched systems are bound to galaxies (i.e., they do not arise in the IGM nor in galactic winds)., Comment: 5 pages, to appear in Carnegie Observatories Astrophysics Series, Vol. 4: Origin and Evolution of the Elements, ed. In this first paper of a series, we report on the use of quasar spectra obtained with the UVES high resolution spectrograph and available through the ESO VLT archive to build the first sample of sub-DLA systems, absorbers with HI column densities > 10^{19} cm^{-2} but lower than the classical definition of damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) 2x10^{20} cm^{-2}. A systematic investigation of the properties of these systems and a comparison with those of the DLAs (Paper II of this series; Peroux et al. 2003b) is expected to provide new clues on the association of high column density absorbers with galaxies and on the overall evolution of the neutral hydrogen gas mass and metal content in the Universe. In the spectra of 22 quasars which were found suitable for a sub-DLA search, we identified 12 sub-DLAs and 1 borderline case between the DLA and sub-DLA systems in the redshift interval z = 1.8-4.3. We measured the column densities of HI and up to 16 ions of low-, intermediate- and high-ionization. We further investigated the significance of the ionization corrections in the determination of the chemical abundances from the low-ionization ions in the sub-DLA HI column density range. Using the predictions of different ion ratios as a function of the ionization parameter computed with the CLOUDY software package, we have estimated that with the exception of one case, the ionization corrections to the abundances of 9 systems for which we were able to constrain the ionization parameter, are lower than 0.2 dex for all of the elements except AlII and ZnII down to HI column densities of log N(HI) = 19.3 cm^{-2}. A new molecular hydrogen cloud has been identified at z = 3.025 in the absorption-line spectrum of the quasar 0347-3819 observed with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. At the same redshift numerous metal lines and the DI Ly-5, Ly-8, Ly-10, and Ly-12 lines were detected. The simultaneous analysis of metal and hydrogen lines yielded D/H = (3.75 +/- 0.25) 10^{-5}. This value is consistent with SBBN if the baryon-to-photon ratio, eta, lies within the range 4.4 10^{-10} 3, T_{CMBR} = 12.1^{+1.7}_{-3.2} K, from the analysis of the CII fine-structure lines. We present the results of a VLT and HST imaging survey aimed at the identification of 4.54.5 galaxies. The resulting integral surface density of the Z4.5z is in the range 0.13-0.44/arcmin^2 and that in the highest redshift bin 5, Accepted for publication on ApJ

Long exposure, long-slit spectra have been obtained in the UV/optical bands for two galaxies at z=2.96 and z=3.32 to investigate the fraction of ionizing UV photons escaping from high redshifts galaxies. The two targets are among the brightest galaxies discovered by Steidel and collaborators and they have different properties in terms of Lyman-alpha emission and dust reddening. No significant Lyman continuum emission has been detected. The noise level in the spectra implies an upper limit of f_{rel,esc}\equiv 3 f(900)/f(1500)< 16% for the relative escape fraction of ionizing photons, after correction for absorption by the intervening intergalactic medium. This upper limit is 4 times lower than the previous detection derived from a composite spectrum of 29 Lyman break galaxies at z 3.4. If this value is typical of the escape fraction of the z 3 galaxies, and is added to the expected contribution of the QSO population, the derived UV background is in good agreement with the one derived by the proximity effect., 16 pages, 2 figures, ApJ Letters in press

We present the redshift distribution of a complete sample of 480 galaxies with Ks1 and z>1.5 respectively. A ``blind'' comparison is made with the predictions of a set of the most recent LambdaCDM hierarchical merging and pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models. The hierarchical merging models overpredict and underpredict the number of galaxies at low-z and high-z respectively, whereas the PLE models match the median redshift and the low-z distribution, still being able to follow the high-z tail of N(z). We briefly discuss the implications of this comparison and the possible origins of the observed discrepancies. The remarkable efficiency of the UVES spectrograph at the VLT has made it possible to push high-resolution, high-S/N ground observations of the Ly-a forest down to z~1.5, gaining new insight into the physical conditions of the intergalactic medium and its evolution over more than 90% of the cosmic time. The universal expansion, the UV ionizing background and the gravitational condensation of structures are the driving factors shaping the number density and the column density distribution of the absorbers. A (limited) contribution of UV photons produced by galaxies is found to be important to reproduce the observed evolutionary pattern at very high and low redshift. The Lyman forest contains most of the baryons, at least at z>1.5, and acts as a reservoir for galaxy formation. The typical Doppler parameter at a fixed column density is measured to slightly increase with decreasing redshift, but the inferred temperature at the mean density is increasing with redshift. From the analysis of the CII fine-structure population ratio in the damped Ly_alpha system at z = 3.025 toward the quasar Q0347--3819 we derive an upper bound of 14.6 (+/- 0.2) K on the cosmic microwave background temperature regardless the presence of other different excitation mechanisms. The analysis of the ground state rotational level populations of H_2 detected in the system reveals a Galactic-type UV radiation field ruling out UV pumping as an important excitation mechanism for CII. The low dust content estimated from the Cr/Zn ratio indicates that the IR dust emission can also be neglected. When the collisional excitation is considered, we measure a temperature for the cosmic background radiation of T = 12.1 (+1.7, -3.2) K. The results are in agreement with the T = 10.968 (+/-) 0.004 K predicted by the hot Big Bang cosmology at z = 3.025., Accepted

A sample of 8 QSOs with 1.7 < z_em < 3.7 has been observed with VLT/UVES at a typical resolution 45000 and S/N~40-50. Thanks to the two-arm design of the spectrograph, a remarkable efficiency has been achieved below 400nm and above 800nm, which translates immediately in the possibility of obtaining new results, especially at z, 4 pages Latex, with 2 PostScript figures, to appear in the Proceedings of the Meeting on Gaseous Matter in Galactic and Intergalactic Space, XVIIth IAP Colloquium, Paris, June 2001

We present the first high-resolution (6.2 to 7.7 km/s FWHM) spectra of the APM BR J0307-4945 quasar at z_em = 4.73 obtained with UVES on the 8.2m VLT Kueyen telescope. We focus our analysis on a damped Ly-alpha (DLA) system at z_abs = 4.466 with a neutral hydrogen column density N(HI) = (4.68 +/- 0.97) 10^{20} cm^{-2}. It is the most distant DLA system known to the present date, observed when the age of the universe was only 1.3 Gyr. It shows complex low- and high-ionization line profiles spanning ~240 and 300 km/s in velocity space respectively. We derive accurate abundances for N, O, Al, Si and Fe, and place a lower limit on C and an upper limit on Ni: [N/H] = -3.07 +/- 0.15, [O/H] = -1.63 +/- 0.19, [Al/H] = -1.79 +/- 0.11, [Si/H] = -1.54 +/- 0.11, [Fe/H] = -1.97 +/- 0.19, [C/H] > -1.63 and [Ni/H] < -2.35. The derived high metallicity, 1/90 solar, shows that this very young absorber (< 1.3 Gyr) has already experienced a significant metal enrichment. The [O/Si] ratio is nearly solar suggesting a limited amount of dust, the relative [Si,O/Fe] abundance ratios show a similar enhancement as observed in the Milky Way stars with comparable metallicities, and the [N/O] ratio is very low. All these results point to an enrichment pattern dominated by Type II supernovae which suggests a Milky Way type evolutionary model., 11 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

The galaxy Luminosity Function (LF) has been estimated in the rest frame B luminosity at 0, Comment: Revised version; corrected magnitudes at 1700 Angstrom in figure 2; ApJL

UVES observations at ESO/VLT of the DLA at z=3.39 towards QSO 0000-2621 provided refined abundances for Fe, Si, N, Ni, and new abundances for O, Ar, P, Zn, Cr, H2. These determinations confirm that the system has remarkable properties with the lowest metallicity, a very low H2 molecular fraction and it has no detectable presence of dust. The [alpha/Fe-peak] ratio is ~ 0.1 challenging current models of chemical evolution. We have discovered molecular hydrogen in a fourth quasar damped Ly-alpha system (hereafter DLA). The UVES spectrograph on the 8.2m ESO Kueyen telescope has allowed the detection of H2 in gas with low metallicity, Z/Z_solar ~= 10^{-2}, and high neutral hydrogen column density, N(HI) ~= 2.6*10^{21} cm^{-2}, at redshift z_abs = 3.3901 toward QSO 0000-2620. The measured H2 fractional abundance of f(H2) ~= 4*10^{-8} is lower than a typical value for Galactic interstellar clouds of high N(HI) column density by a factor of (2-3)*10^6. Since H2 molecules are formed efficiently on dust grains, it implies that the dust condensation in this DLA is negligible, and hence the abundances derived from metal absorption lines are the actual ones. The obtained f(H2) value leads to an estimate of the dust number density of < n_d >_DLA ~= 10^{-3}*< n_d >_ISM, which is consistent with the dust-to-gas ratio k, 8 pages, 6 ps figures, to appear in AA

A high resolution (R = 110.000), very high S/N (>600) spectrum of the metal-poor turnoff star G271-162 has been obtained in connection with the commissioning of UVES at VLT/Kueyen. Using both 1D hydrostatic and 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres, the lithium isotope ratio has been estimated from the LiI 670.8 nm line by means of spectral synthesis. The necessary stellar line broadening (1D: macroturbulence + rotation, 3D: rotation) has been determined from unblended KI, CaI and FeI lines. The 3D line profiles agree very well with the observed profiles, including the characteristic line asymmetries. Both the 1D and 3D analyses reveal a possible detection of 6Li in G271-162, 6Li/7Li = 0.02 +-0.01 (one sigma). It is discussed if the smaller amount of 6Li in G271-162 than in the similar halo star HD84937 could be due to differences in stellar mass and/or metallicity or whether it may reflect an intrinsic scatter of the Li isotope ratio in the ISM at a given metallicity., 5 pages with 6 figures. New results from the search for H2 absorption in the damped Ly-alpha galaxy at redshift z = 3.4 toward QSO 0000-2620 (z_em = 4.1) are reported. The high-resolution (lambda/Delta lambda = 48,000) spectra of Q0000-2620 were obtained using the Ultraviolet - Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the 8.2m ESO Kueyen telescope. The ortho-H2 column density is found to be N(J=1) = (5.55 +/- 1.35) 10^{13} cm^{-2} (2sigma C.L.). The combination of N(J=1) with the limits available for other low rotational levels restricts the excitation temperature T_ex in the range (290-540) K. This gives the total H2 column density of N(H2) = (8.75 +/- 1.25) 10^{13} cm^{-2} and the corresponding fraction of hydrogen atoms bound in molecules of f(H2) = (6.8 +/- 2.0) 10^{-8}., Comment: 4 pages, 1 eps figure, to appear in Proceed. The sizes of the field galaxies with I, Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, ApJ in press, Dec 1999

Deep J and Ks band images covering a $5\times5$ arcmin area centered on the NTT Deep Field have been obtained during the Science Verification of SOFI at the NTT. These images were made available via the Web in early June. The preliminary results we have obtained by the analysis of these data are the following: 1) the counts continue to rise with no evidence of a turnover or of a flattening down to the limits of the survey (Ks=22.5 and J=24); 2) we find a slope $dlog(N)/dm\sim$0.37 in agreement with most of the faintest surveys but much steeper than the Hawaii survey; 3) fainter than Ks$\sim19$ and J$\sim20$, the median J-K color of galaxies shows a break in its reddening trend turning toward bluer colors; 4) faint bluer galaxies also display a larger compactness index, and a smaller apparent size., 8 pages, 5 figures, proc. of the Euroconference on "The Evolution of Galaxies on Cosmological Timescale", to appear in Ap&SS

A combination of ground-based (NTT and VLT) and HST (HDF-N and HDF-S) public imaging surveys have been used to collect a sample of 1712 I-selected and 319 $K\leq 21$ galaxies. Photometric redshifts have been obtained for all these galaxies. The results have been compared with the prediction of an analytic rendition of the current CDM hierarchical models for galaxy formation. We focus in particular on two observed quantities: the galaxy redshift distribution at K2. This result strongly supports hierarchical scenarios where present-day massive galaxies are the result of merging processes. The observed UV luminosity density in the I-selected sample is confined within a factor of 4 over the whole range 03. CDM models in $\Lambda$-dominated universe are in better agreement at 3, Comment: Figures 2 and 3 modified to match the published version

We present here the spectrum of the galaxy companion to the z=4.7 quasar BR1202-0725, in the optical range 6000-9000 A, corresponding to 1050-1580 A rest-frame. We detect a strong Lya emission line at z=4.702, with an integrated flux of 2x10^{-16} ergs/cm^2/s, and a UV continuum longward of the Lya emission at a flux level of 3x10^{-19}ergs/cm^2/s/A. We fail to detect any CIV[1550] emission with a 3 sigma upper limit of 3x10^{-17} ergs/cm^2/s $. We show that the ratio between Lya and continuum intensity and the absence of a strong CIV emission imply that the UV continuum radiation is the result of an intense star-formation activity rather than of a reprocessing of the QSO flux. The total estimated SFR of this z=4.7 star-forming region is about 15-54 Msun/yr, depending on the IMF and the metallicity. The present data suggest that the Lya emission has a velocity and spatial structure, with possible velocity differences of about 500 km/s on scales of few kpc. These velocity patterns may be a signature of collapsing or merging phenomena in the QSO and its environment, as expected from current models of galaxy formation at high z., 14 pages + 2 figures. The quasar Q1208+1011 (z_{em}=3.8) is the second highest redshift double quasar ever detected. Several indications point toward it being a gravitational lensed system, although a definitive proof is still lacking. We present new evidence of its lensed nature based on the weakness of the ``proximity effect'' measured in the high resolution Lyman absorption spectrum of the QSO. A luminosity amplification as large as 22 has been derived from this analysis. Indications on the redshift of the lensing galaxy can be obtained from the analysis of the intervening heavy element absorption systems discovered in the QSO high resolution spectrum. On statistical and dynamical grounds a MgII system present at z=1.13 appears as the most likely candidate for the lensing galaxy. We compare the observed parameters with a simple isothermal model for the lens to derive the properties of the lensing galaxy. The resulting magnification factor is smaller, although marginally consistent with that derived by the analysis of the proximity effect., Comment: 11 pages, 2 Postscript figures, ApJ in press

Spectra of the QSO pair Q0307-195A,B have been obtained in the Ly-alpha Forest (3660 - 3930 A) and C IV (4720 - 4850 A) regions with a FWHM resolution between 0.7 and 0.5 A. 46 lines have been detected in the spectrum of object A while 36 in the spectrum of object B, of them 29 and 20 were identified as Ly-alpha absorptions respectively. The present observations have been supplemented with data of comparable quality on other 7 QSO pairs available in the literature to give an enlarged sample of 217 Ly-alpha lines with rest equivalent width W_o > 0.3 A. The analysis of the hits (i.e. when an absorption line appears in both QSO spectra) and misses (i.e. when a line is seen in any of the QSO spectra, but no line is seen in the other), carried out with an improved statistical approach, indicates that the absorbers have typically a large size (h = H_0/100 km/s/Mpc, q_0 = 0.5): R = 362 h^{-1} kpc, with 95 % confidence limits 298< R, 11 pages, 6 Postscript encapsulated figures, uses latex2e and aa.cls. The estimate of the ionizing UV background through the proximity effect analysis is discussed. Taking into account the correct bending of the column density distribution which appears in high resolution high s/n data, a value of the UV background ~5x10^{-22} cgs is obtained in the redshift interval z=1.7-4 without indication of any appreciable redshift evolution. Inferences on the spectral shape of the UV background between the HI and HeII edges are provided by the study of metal line ratios like SiIV/CIV in optically thin systems. The presence of a jump near the HeII edge seems favoured at very high redshifts z>3. An increasing HeII jump with increasing redshift can be responsible for the decreasing in the minimum temperatures of the Lyman alpha clouds with increasing z. New studies of the cosmic evolution of star-forming galaxies allow the estimate of a galaxy-dominated UV background intensity ~1.3 x10^{-21} f_{esc} cgs at z=0.5 where f_{esc}, 7 pages. Spectra of the z_em = 3.268 quasar PKS 2126-158 have been obtained in the range lambda lambda 4300-6620 A with a resolution R = 27000 and an average signal-to-noise ratio s/n = 25 per resolution element. The list of the identified absorption lines is given together with their fitted column densities and Doppler widths. The modal value of the Doppler parameter distribution for the Ly-alpha lines is = 25 km/s. The column density distribution can be described by a power-law dn/dN \propto N^{-beta} with beta = 1.5. 12 metal systems have been identified, two of which were previously unknown. In order to make the column densities of the intervening systems compatible with realistic assumptions about the cloud sizes and the silicon to carbon overabundance, it is necessary to assume a jump beyond the He II edge in the spectrum of the UV ionizing background at z = 3 a factor 10 larger than the standard predictions for the integrated quasar contribution. An enlarged sample of C IV absorptions (71 doublets) has been used to analyze the statistical properties of this class of absorbers strictly related to galaxies. The column density distribution is well described by a single power-law, with beta=1.64 and the Doppler parameter distribution shows a modal value b = 14 km/s. The two point correlation function has been computed in the velocity space for the individual components of C IV features. A significant signal is obtained for scales smaller than 200-300 km/s, xi(30< Delta v < 90 km/s) = 32.71 +- 2.89. The observed clustering of Lyman-$\alpha$ lines is reviewed and compared with the clustering of CIV systems. We argue that a continuity of properties exists between Lyman-$\alpha$ and metal systems and show that the small-scale clustering of the absorbers is consistent with a scenario of gravitationally induced correlations. We analyze the clustering properties of a high-resolution (~10 km/s) sample of about 1600 Lyman-alpha lines in the spectra of 15 quasars, obtained in the framework of an ESO key-programme with the addition of literature data. The two-point correlation function in the velocity space shows a significant signal on small velocity scales (Delta v < 300 km/s) with amplitude and significance increasing with increasing column density. The correlation scale at z~3 turns out to be 200 - 300 h_{50}^{-1} kpc. A trend of increasing correlation with decreasing redshift is apparent. The existence of over- and under-densities on scales of a few tens of Megaparsec is confirmed with a high confidence level and a number of possible structures are identified. The present observations are found to be consistent with models of gravitationally induced correlations. A continuity scenario between Lyman-alpha and metal systems emerges, with a suggested physical association between the Lyman-$��$ clouds with log N_{HI} > 14 and the halos of protogalactic systems., 9 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS-Latex. We present deep BVrI multicolor photometry in the field of the quasar BR1202-07 (z_{em}=4.694) aimed at selecting field galaxies at z>4. We compare the observed colors of the galaxies in the field with those predicted by spectral synthesis models including UV absorption by the intergalactic medium and we define a robust multicolor selection of galaxies at z>4. We provide spectroscopic confirmation of the high redshift QSO-companion galaxy (z=4.702) selected by our method. Spectra of the \ze~$=4.12$ quasar Q$0000-2619$ have been obtained in the range $\lambda\lambda = 4880-8115$ \AA~with a resolution of 13 \kms~and signal--to--noise ratio of $s/n=15-60$ per resolution element. The mode of the distribution of the Doppler parameters for the \lya~lines is $\simeq 25$ \kms. The spectrum of the Q0055-269 ($z=3.66$) has been observed at the resolution of 14 km s$^{-1}$ in the wavelength interval 4750--6300 \AA. The statistical distribution of the Doppler parameter for the Ly$_\alpha$ lines is peaked at $b\simeq 23$ km s$^{-1}$. The column density distribution is described by a power-law with a break at $\log N_{HI} \simeq 14.5$. Significant clustering, with $\xi \simeq 1$ at $\Delta v=100$ km s$^{-1}$, is detected for lines with $\log N_{HI} \geq 13.8$. The spectra of the QSOs PKS2126-158 ($z_{em}=3.27$) and Q0055-269 ($z_{em}=3.66$) have been observed at high resolution ($2.2 - 2.7 \times 10^4$). Significant clustering, with $��\simeq 1$ at $��v=100$ km s$^{-1}$, is detected in both cases for lines with $\log N_{HI} \geq 13.8$. A similar result is obtained analysing the data available in the literature for Q0014+81. An anticlustering signal is also detected on scales $��v \sim 600$ km s$^{-1}$. We have obtained high, 11 and 14 \kms, and medium, 40 and 53 \kms, resolution spectra of the $z_{em} = 4.11$ quasar Q0000--2619 covering the range 4400 \AA\ to 9265 \AA . We identify nine metal absorption systems, of which four were previously known. A fifth previously suggested system at $z_{abs} \approx 3.409$ (Turnshek et al~ 1991) is ruled out by our data. Two of the eight systems for which the \lya~ line is in the observable range have a damped \lya~ line. Six of the nine systems show evidence for complex sub--component structure. At our resolution and S/N we identify a total of 21 sub--components in the nine systems. Five of the nine systems (11 of the 21 components) fall within the $\pm 5000$ \kms~ range of the emission redshift, and are hence classified as \zae~ absorbers. For the two damped systems we find metal abundances of $\leq 1$% and $\leq 8$% of solar values at redshifts of 3.0541 and 3.3901 respectively. These upper limits are consistent with what would be expected from previous determinations at lower redshifts, and our data are hence compatible with earlier conclusions that no evidence is yet found for chemical evolution of intervening damped and Lyman limit absorbers. For the \zae~ systems we found indications of metallicities comparable to, and even in excess of solar values. These much higher values compared to the damped systems, are in favour of the intrinsic hypothesis for these systems., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures available from the authors in ps-format, LaTeX file (standard macro l-aa)

We present J and Ks band galaxy counts down to J=24 and Ks=22.5 obtained with the new infrared imager/spectrometer, SOFI, at the ESO New Technology Telescope. The co-addition of short, dithered, images led to a total exposure time of 256 and 624 minutes respectively, over an area of $\sim20$ arcmin$^2$ centered on the NTT Deep Field. The total number of sources with S/N$>5$ is 1569 in the J sample and 1025 in the Ks-selected sample. These are the largest samples currently available at these depths. A d$logN$/d$m$ relation with slope of $\sim0.36$ in J and $\sim0.38$ in Ks is found with no evident sign of a decline at the magnitude limit. The observed surface density of ``small'' sources is much lower than ``large'' ones at bright magnitudes and rises more steeply than the large sources to fainter magnitudes. Fainter than $J\sim22.5$ and Ks$\sim21.5$, small sources dominate the number counts. Galaxies get redder in J-K down to J$\sim20$ and Ks$\sim19$. At fainter magnitudes, the median color becomes bluer with an accompanying increase in the compactness of the galaxies. We show that the blue, small sources which dominate the faint IR counts are not compatible with a high redshift ($z>1$) population. On the contrary, the observed color and compactness trends, together with the absence of a turnover at faint magnitudes and the dominance of small sources, can be naturally explained by an increasing contribution of sub-$L^*$ galaxies when going to fainter apparent magnitudes. Such evidence strongly supports the existence of a steeply rising ($��\ll-1$) faint end of the local infrared luminosity function of galaxies - at least for luminosities $L, Accepted for publication on A&A; 15 pages, 13 figures

We report the discovery of an isolated brown dwarf with similar properties to the binary object Gliese 229B and to the newly discovered field brown dwarf SDSS 1624+00. Although exhibiting similar colors, its magnitude of ~20.5 is about 6 and 5 magnitudes fainter than Gliese 229B and SDSS 1624+00 respectively. This is the third methane brown dwarf reported to date, the second isolated one in the field and by far the most distant at ~ 100 pc. Its IR spectrum, although at low S/N given the faintness of the object, is remarkably similar to those of the 2 other methane brown dwarfs., 4 pages, 2 figures, corrected version after referee's comments. We present a deep BVrI multicolor catalog of galaxies in a 5.62 sq.arcmin field 80 arcsec south of the high redshift (z=4.7) quasar BR 1202-0725, derived from observations with the direct CCD camera SUSI at the ESO NTT. The formal 5$��$ magnitude limits (in 2 x FWHM apertures) are 26.9, 26.5, 25.9 and 25.3 in B, V, r and I respectively. Counts, colors for the star and galaxy samples are discussed and a comparison with a deep HST image in the I band is presented. The percentage of merged or blended galaxies in the SUSI data to this magnitude limit is estimated to be not higher than 1%. At the same galactic latitude of the HDF but pointing toward the galactic center, the star density in this field is found to be ~3 times higher, with ~20% of the objects with V-I > 3.0. Reliable colors have been measured for galaxies selected down to r = 26. The choice of the optical filters has been optimized to define a robust multicolor selection of galaxies at 3.8, 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables (uses aa.cls). We present the deep UBVRI observations of the HDF-S NICMOS field obtained as part of the Science Verification of the VLT Unit 1 telescope. The images have been used to construct object catalogs and to obtain photometric redshifts. The effective field of view is $\simeq 70\times70$ arcsec$^2$, and the formal $5\sigma$ limiting magnitudes (in a 2 FWHM aperture) are 26.3, 27.8, 27.5, 26.9, 25.2 in the $U$, $B$, $V$, $R$ and $I$ bands, respectively. Thanks to the sub-arcsecond image quality, relatively long exposure time, and large collecting area of the VLT, this is the deepest set of multicolor images ever obtained from a ground-based telescope. Galaxy counts have been derived independently in each band, and show no significant departures from previous data from wider areas. A multicolor photometric catalog of all the galaxies selected in the $R$ band has also been obtained and used to derive photometric redshifts for all galaxies with $R \leq 26.5 $, using also the J,H and K magnitudes from the NICMOS deep observations. A significant fraction (\simeq 28%)of the galaxies is placed at $z\geq 2$. This paper presents ground-based data obtained from deep optical and infrared observations of the HST Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) field carried out at the ESO 3.5 New Technology Telescope (NTT). These data were taken as part of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) program, a public survey coordinated by ESO and member states, in preparation for the first year of operation of the VLT. Deep CCD images are available for five optical passbands, reaching 2 sigma limiting magnitudes of U_AB~27.0, B_AB~26.5, V_AB~26, R_AB~26, I_AB~25, covering a region of ~25 square arcmin, which includes the HST WPFC2 field. The infrared observations cover a total area of ~42 square arcmin and include both the HST WFPC2 and STIS fields. The observations of the WFPC2 region were conducted in JHKs passbands, reaching J_AB~25, and H_AB and K_AB~24.0. Due to time constraints, the adjacent field, covering the STIS field, has been observed only in R, I and JHKs, while no observations were conducted covering the NIC3 field. This paper describes the observations and data reduction. It also presents images of the surveyed region and lists the optical and infrared photometric parameters of the objects detected on the co-added images of each passband, as well as multicolor optical and infrared catalogs. These catalogs together with the astrometrically and photometrically calibrated co-added images are being made public world-wide and can be retrieved from the world-wide web (http://www.eso.org/eis)., 24 pages, 17 figures (7 available in jpg format), submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Attempts to measure the optical depth due to a diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) in the spectra of high redshift quasars (GP test) within the ESO key program on the intergalactic medium are reviewed. It is shown that there is no evidence for any Gunn-Peterson effect up to the highest redshifts observable in quasar spectra. The Ly$\alpha$ line statistics consistent with this limit is not able to explain the strong absorption observed at the HeII forest in one QSO, leaving room for a true HeII GP effect. The HI/HeII GP ratio implies a steep ionizing UV background at $z\sim 5$ and ionizing sources of stellar origin., Comment: 4 pages, Unix compressed, uuencoded postscript file including 4 figures.
