The use of electromagnetic fields strong enough to rival these native microscopic interactions allows us to study the electronic response as well as the time scales and energies involved in using quantum effects for possible applications. We use element-specific transient x-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-harmonic generation to measure the response to ultrashort off-resonant optical fields in the prototypical correlated electron insulator NiO. Surprisingly, fields of up to 0.22 V/Å lead to no detectable changes in the correlated Ni $3d$ orbitals contrary to previous predictions. A transient directional charge transfer is uncovered, a behavior that is captured by first-principles theory. Investigations of magnetically ordered phases on the femtosecond timescale have provided significant insights into the influence of charge and lattice degrees of freedom on the magnetic sub-system. However, short-range magnetic correlations occurring in the absence of long-range order, for example in spin-frustrated systems, are inaccessible to many ultrafast techniques. Here, we show how time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) is capable of probing such short-ranged magnetic dynamics in a charge-transfer insulator through the detection of a Zhang-- Rice singlet exciton. Utilizing trRIXS measurements at the O K-edge, and in combination with model calculations, we probe the short-range spin correlations in the frustrated spin chain material CuGeO3 following photo-excitation, revealing a strong coupling between the local lattice and spin sub-systems.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) provides remarkable opportunities to interrogate ultrafast dynamics in liquids. Here we use RIXS to study the fundamentally and practically important hydroxyl radical in liquid water, OH(aq). Impulsive ionization of pure liquid water produced a short-lived population of OH(aq), which was probed using femtosecond x-rays from an x-ray free-electron laser. We find that RIXS reveals localized electronic transitions that are masked in the ultraviolet absorption spectrum by strong charge-transfer transitions -- thus providing a means to investigate the evolving electronic structure and reactivity of the hydroxyl radical in aqueous and heterogeneous environments. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful and well established technique with sensitivity to elemental and chemical composition. Despite these advantages, its implementation has not kept pace with the development of ultrafast pulsed x-ray sources where XAS can capture femtosecond chemical processes. X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) deliver femtosecond, narrow bandwidth ($\frac{\Delta E}{E} < 0.5\%$) pulses containing $\sim 10^{10}$ photons. However, the energy contained in each pulse fluctuates thus complicating pulse by pulse efforts to quantify the number of photons. Improvements in counting the photons in each pulse have defined the state of the art for XAS sensitivity. Here we demonstrate a final step in these improvements through a balanced detection method that approaches the photon counting shot noise limit. In doing so, we obtain high quality absorption spectra from the insulator-metal transition in VO$_2$ and unlock a method to explore dilute systems, subtle processes and nonlinear phenomena with ultrafast x-rays. The method is especially beneficial for x-ray light sources where integration and averaging are not viable options to improve sensitivity.

In the mixed-valence manganites, a near-infrared laser typically melts the orbital and spin order simultaneously, corresponding to the photoinduced $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ excitations in the Mott-Hubbard bands of manganese. Here, we use ultrafast methods -- both femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction and optical reflectivity -- to demonstrate that the orbital response in the layered manganite Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ ($\it{x}$ = 2/3) does not follow this scheme. At the photoexcitation saturation fluence, the orbital order is only diminished by a few percent in the transient state. Instead of the typical $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ transition, a near-infrared pump in this compound promotes a fundamentally distinct mechanism of charge transfer, the $d^{0}$ $ \xrightarrow{}$ $d^{1}L$, where $\it{L}$ denotes a hole in the oxygen band. This novel finding may pave a new avenue for selectively manipulating specific types of order in complex materials of this class.

Sub-picosecond magnetisation manipulation via femtosecond optical pumping has attracted wide attention ever since its original discovery in 1996. However, the spatial evolution of the magnetisation is not yet well understood, in part due to the difficulty in experimentally probing such rapid dynamics. Here, we find evidence of rapid magnetic order recovery in materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via nonlinear magnon processes. We identify both localisation and coalescence regimes, whereby localised magnetic textures nucleate and subsequently evolve in accordance with a power law formalism. Coalescence is observed for optical excitations both above and below the switching threshold. Simulations indicate that the ultrafast generation of noncollinear magnetisation via optical pumping establishes exchange-mediated spin currents with an equivalent 100% spin polarised charge current density of $10^8$ A/cm$^2$. Such large spin currents precipitate rapid recovery of magnetic order after optical pumping. These processes suggest an ultrafast optical route for the stabilization of desired meta-stable states, e.g., isolated skyrmions.

Organic chromophores with heteroatoms possess an important excited state relaxation channel from an optically allowed ����* to a dark n��*state. We exploit the element and site specificity of soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy to selectively follow the electronic change during the ����*/n��* internal conversion. As a hole forms in the n orbital during ����*/n��* internal conversion, the near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectrum at the heteroatom K-edge exhibits an additional resonance. We demonstrate the concept with the nucleobase thymine, a prototypical heteroatomic chromophore. With the help of time resolved NEXAFS spectroscopy at the oxygen K-edge, we unambiguously show that ����*/n��* internal conversion takes place within (60 \pm 30) fs. High-level coupled cluster calculations on the isolated molecules used in the experiment confirm the superb electronic structure sensitivity of this new method for excited state investigations.

Ultrafast broadband transient reflectivity experiments are performed to study the interplay between the non-equilibrium dynamics of the pseudogap and the superconducting phases in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{0.92}$Y$_{0.08}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+��}$. Once superconductivity is established the relaxation of the pseudogap proceeds $\sim$ 2 times faster than in the normal state, and the corresponding transient reflectivity variation changes sign after $\sim$ 0.5 ps. The results can be described by a set of coupled differential equations for the pseudogap and for the superconducting order parameter. The sign and strength of the coupling term suggest a remarkably weak competition between the two phases, allowing their coexistence., 12 pages, 5 figures. Here we report extensive ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity experiments on overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+��}$ single crystals (T$_C$=78 K) aimed to clarify the nature of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. The experimental data show the lack of the quasiparticles decay time divergence at the fluence required to induce this phase transition, in contrast to the thermally-driven phase transition observed at T$_C$ and at variance with recently reported photoinduced charge-density-wave and spin-density-wave to metal phase transitions. Our data demonstrate the non-thermal character of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. The data have been analyzed using an ad-hoc developed time-dependent Rothwarf-Taylor model, opening the question on the order of this non-equilibrium phase transition., 10 pages, 6 figures

Unveiling the nature of the bosonic excitations that mediate the formation of Cooper pairs is a key issue for understanding unconventional superconductivity. A fundamen- tal step toward this goal would be to identify the relative weight of the electronic and phononic contributions to the overall frequency (\Omega) dependent bosonic function, \Pi(\Omega). We perform optical spectroscopy on Bi2212 crystals with simultaneous time- and frequency-resolution; this technique allows us to disentangle the electronic and phononic contributions by their different temporal evolution. The strength of the interaction ({\lambda}~1.1) with the electronic excitations and their spectral distribution fully account for the high critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In strongly-correlated systems the electronic properties at the Fermi energy (EF) are intertwined with those at high energy scales. One of the pivotal challenges in the field of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) is to understand whether and how the high energy scale physics associated with Mott-like excitations (|E-E$_{F}$|>1 eV) is involved in the condensate formation. Here we show the interplay between the many-body high-energy CuO2 excitations at 1.5 and 2 eV and the onset of HTSC. This is revealed by a novel optical pump supercontinuum-probe technique, which provides access to the dynamics of the dielectric function in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{0.92}$Y$_{0.08}$Cu$_2$O$_{8+{\delta}}$ over an extended energy range, after the photoinduced suppression of the superconducting pairing. These results unveil an unconventional mechanism at the base of HTSC both below and above the optimal hole concentration required to attain the maximum critical temperature (T$_c$)., Comment: Text and Supplementary Information

In this letter we demonstrate the possibility to determine the temporal and spectral structure (spectrogram) of a complex light pulse exploiting the ultrafast switching character of a non-thermal photo-induced phase transition. As a proof, we use a VO2 multi-film, undergoing an ultrafast insulator-to-metal phase transition when excited by femtosecond near-infrared laser pulses. The abrupt variation of the multi-film optical properties, over a broad infrared/visible frequency range, is exploited to determine, in-situ and in a simple way, the spectrogram of a supercontinuum pulse produced by a photonic crystal fiber.
