Multimode receivers based on spatial or modal diversity are promising architectures to mitigate in real time the atmospheric turbulence effects for free space optical (FSO) communications. In this paper, we evaluate and comment on the dynamical communication performances of a FSO mode diversity receiver, based on a spatial demultiplexer and a silicon photonic coherent combiner, for an optical link from a GEO satellite to an optical ground station (OGS). We simulate time series of distorted wavefronts received by the OGS and we show numerically that the coherent combination of spatial modes mitigate the signal fading compared to a conventional single mode fiber (SMF) receiver. We verify this property in a laboratory environment by generating the wavefronts corresponding to the use case with an atmospheric propagation channel emulator. Then we modulate the optical carrier prior to the wavefront emulator with 10G OOK and DPSK data sequences to measure the BER performance of the proposed receiver during the time series emulation. Finally, we study and comment on the influence of the number of modes combined and the wavelength multiplexing on the BER performances. Media featuring both optical gain and disorder, such as random lasers, represent formidable challenges as subjects of research due to the high complexity of the light propagation within them; however, dramatic advances in this nascent field have been furnished by the paradigm of applying wavefront shaping techniques to the beam pumping the system. We present here a theoretical and experimental study employing this approach in a gain medium where the disorder arises not from random scattering but rather from the multimodality of a waveguide: an amplifying multimode fiber. The shaping of the core-guided pump prior to its injection affects the complex, speckle-like patterns of excitation within the fiber volume. Thus we are offered the intriguing prospect of manipulating the spatially heterogeneous gain in a system where the disorder, albeit highly complex, may be fully understood in terms of the discrete eigenmodes of a well-known waveguide. We study our medium in two different configurations: as an optical amplifier, and as a fiber laser. In the first configuration we show that dependence upon the pump configuration, of the amplifier transmission function, surprisingly survives several physical mechanisms which at first sight would appear to severely limit it. This insight is then carried on to the lasing cavity configuration, where we find striking parallels between the behavior of the system and that of random lasers; more importantly, the pump shaping shows a strong ability to control the complex emission, in particular - to selectively favor individual spectral lines and stabilize single-mode operation., 15 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1911.07812

Wavefront shaping techniques allow the control of the transport of light through many types of scattering or complex media, among them multimode fibers. The case of a multimode fiber which is also a gain medium presents further intriguing prospects for control, due to the possibility of wavefront shaping not only the signal light amplified by the medium, but also the pump light absorbed within it. Provided that the lightwave used for pumping is coherent, its shaping prior to injection will affect the complex, speckle-like spatial patterns of excitation within the amplifier volume, which in turn will act upon the signal as heterogeneous gain. We introduce a new theoretical model which captures the essential features of a multimode amplifying fiber pumped by a coherent beam with configurable modal content, allowing the calculation of the gain-dependent transmission matrix. We numerically implement our model to explore the extent to which one may control the amplified light in the spatial-domain, by shaping the pump; we demonstrate a significant ability of manipulation, as well as several interesting physical mechanisms limiting it. In particular, we show how taking into account the cross-contributions between all guided modes within the fiber is essential for understanding the full range of the signal sensitivity to the choice of pump shaping., 17 pages, 8 figures
