This paper discusses the leading-order correction induced by cosmological perturbations on the average expansion rate of an expanding spacetime, containing one or many perfect fluids. The calculation is carried out up to the second order in the perturbations, and is kept as general as possible. In particular, no approximation such as a long-wavelength or a short-wavelength limit is invoked, and all three types of perturbations (scalar, vector, and tensor) are considered. First, the average value of the expansion rate is computed over a three-dimensional space-like surface where the total density of the fluids is constant. Then, a formula is derived relating that average value to the one over any other surface, on which a different scalar property of the fluids is constant. Moreover, the general formulas giving the correction to the average expansion rate are applied, in particular, to the case of a spacetime containing a single fluid with a constant equation of state. The sign and the effective equation of state of the corresponding back-reaction effect in the first Friedmann equation are examined.

We use the latest constraints on the population of stellar origin binary black holes (SOBBH) from LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) observations, to estimate the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) they generate in the frequency band of LISA. We account for the faint and distant binaries, which contribute the most to the SGWB, by extending the merger rate at high redshift assuming it tracks the star formation rate. We adopt different methods to compute the SGWB signal: an analytical evaluation, Monte Carlo sums over SOBBH population realisations, and a method that accounts for the role of the detector by simulating LISA data and iteratively removing resolvable signals until only the confusion noise is left, allowing for the extraction of both the expected SGWB and the number of resolvable SOBBHs. Since the latter are few for SNR thresholds larger than five, we confirm that the spectral shape of the SGWB in the LISA band follows the analytical prediction of a power law. We infer the probability distribution of the SGWB amplitude from the LVK GWTC-3 posterior of the binary population model; its interquartile range of $h^2\Omega_\mathrm{GW}(f=3\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{Hz}) \in [5.65,\,11.5]\times10^{-13}$ is in agreement with most previous estimates. We perform a MC analysis to assess LISA's capability to detect and characterise this signal. Accounting for both the instrumental noise and the galactic binaries foreground, with four years of data, LISA will be able to detect the SOBBH SGWB with percent accuracy, narrowing down the uncertainty on the amplitude by one order of magnitude with respect to the range of possible amplitudes inferred from the population model. A measurement of this signal by LISA will help to break the degeneracy among some of the population parameters, and provide interesting constraints, in particular on the redshift evolution of the SOBBH merger rate., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures. Scalar polarization modes of gravitational waves, which are often introduced in the context of the viable extension of gravity, have been actively searched. However, couplings of the scalar modes to the matter are strongly constrained by the fifth-force experiments. Thus, the amplitude of scalar polarization in the observed gravitational-wave signal must be significantly suppressed compared to that of the tensor modes. Here, we discuss the implications of the experiments in the solar system on the detectability of scalar modes in gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences, taking into account the whole processes from the generation to the observation of gravitational waves. We first claim that the energy carried by the scalar modes at the generation is, at most, that of the tensor modes from the observed phase evolution of the inspiral gravitational waves. Next, we formulate general gravitational-wave propagation and point out that the energy flux hardly changes through propagation as long as the background changes slowly compared to the wavelength of the propagating waves. Finally, we show that the possible magnitude of scalar polarization modes detected by the ground-based gravitational-wave telescopes is already severely constrained by the existing gravity tests in the solar system., 18 pages

From a classical analysis, we show that gravitational waves in a cosmological medium with equation of state $\omega=-1/3$ can follow a London-like equation, implying that some gravitational wave solutions present a decay for certain wavelengths. This scenario, corresponding to a cosmic string cosmology, induces an attenuation temporal scale on the gravitational wave propagation. We discuss on how these solutions impose a limit on the wavelength of the waves that can propagate, which depends on the type of spatial curvature and the energy density content of this type of cosmology.

Shibata and Sasaki (1999) introduced the so-called compaction function. Since then, it has been empirically established that the maximum value of this function (or its volume-averaged counterpart) in the long-wavelength solutions gives a very robust threshold of primordial black hole formation. In this paper, we show that in spite of initial intention, the Shibata-Sasaki compaction function cannot be interpreted as the ratio of the mass excess to the areal radius in the constant-mean-curvature slice of their choice but coincides with that in the {\it comoving} slice up to a constant factor depending on the equation of state. Microscopic horizonless relics could form in the early universe either directly through gravitational collapse or as stable remnants of the Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes. In both cases they completely or partially evade cosmological constraints arising from Hawking evaporation and in certain mass ranges can explain the entirety of the dark matter. We systematically explore the stochastic gravitational-wave background associated with the formation of microscopic dark-matter relics in various scenarios, adopting an agnostic approach and discussing the limitations introduced by existing constraints, possible ways to circumvent the latter, and expected astrophysical foregrounds. Interestingly, this signal is at most marginally detectable with current interferometers but could be detectable by third-generations instruments such as the Einstein Telescope, strengthening their potential as discovery machines., 11 pages, 4 figures

The quantum cosmology of the flat Friedmann-Lema{\^i}tre-Robertson-Walker Universe, filled with a scalar field, is considered in the de Broglie-Bohm (dBB) interpretation framework. A stiff-matter quantum bounce solution is obtained. The bouncing and subsequent pre-inflationary and inflationary dynamics are studied in details. We consider some representative primordial inflation models as examples, for which analytical expressions characterizing the dynamical quantities can be explicitly derived. The dependence of the inflationary dynamics on the quantum bounce parameters is then analyzed. The parameters emerging from our description are constrained by requiring the produced dynamics to be in accordance with some key cosmological quantities. We consider axial (or odd-parity) perturbations of non-spinning hairy black holes (BH) in shift-symmetric DHOST (Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor) theories, including terms quartic and cubic in second derivatives of the scalar field. We give a new formulation of the effective metric in which axial perturbations propagate as in general relativity. We then introduce a generic parametrization of the effective metric in the vicinity of the background BH horizon. Writing the dynamics of the perturbations in terms of a Schr\"odinger-like operator, we discuss in which cases the operator is (essentially) self-adjoint, thus leading to an unambiguous time evolution, according to the choice of parameters characterizing the near-horizon effective metric. We investigate the relation between quantum nonlocality and gravity at the astrophysical scale, both in the classical and quantum regimes. Considering particle pairs orbiting in the strong gravitational field of ultra-compact objects, we find that the violation of Bell inequality acquires an angular modulation factor that strongly depends on the nature of the gravitational source. We show how such gravitationally-induced modulation of quantum nonlocality readily discriminates between black holes (both classical and inclusive of quantum corrections) and string fuzzballs, i.e., the true quantum description of ultra-compact objects according to string theory. These findings promote Bell nonlocality as a potentially key tool in comparing different models of classical and quantum gravity and putting them to the test., 12 pages, 4 figures

The inspiral phase of gravitational waves emitted by spinless compact binary systems is derived through the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order beyond quadrupole radiation, and the leading amplitude mode ($\ell$, m) = (2, 2) is obtained at 4PN order. We also provide the radiated flux, as well as the phase in the stationary phase approximation. In this paper, we have investigated the processes of evaporation and accretion of primordial black holes during the radiation-dominated era and the matter-dominated era. This subject is very important since usually these two processes are considered independent of each other. In other words, previous works consider them in such a way that they do not have a direct effect on each other, and as a result, their effects on the mass of primordial black holes are calculated separately. The calculations of this paper indicate that assuming these two processes independently of each other will lead to wrong results that only give correct answers within certain limits. In fact, in general, it is a mistake to consider the static state for the event horizon of primordial black holes and perform calculations related to their evaporation, while the radius of primordial black holes is constantly changing due to accretion. In addition, we have shown that considering the dynamic event horizon in some masses and in some times can lead to the shutdown of the Hawking evaporation process. This study is much more accurate and detailed than our previous study. These calculations show well the mass evolution of primordial black holes from the time of formation to the end of the matter-dominated era, taking into account both the main processes governing black holes, evaporation and accretion.

Stochastic inflation resolves primordial perturbations non-linearly, probing their probability distribution deep into its non-Gaussian tail. The strongest perturbations collapse into primordial black holes. In typical black-hole-producing single-field inflation, the strongest stochastic kicks occur during a period of constant roll. In this paper, I solve the stochastic constant-roll system, drawing the stochastic kicks from a numerically computed power spectrum, beyond the usual de Sitter approximation. The perturbation probability distribution is an analytical function of the integrated power spectrum $\sigma_k^2$ and the second slow-roll parameter $\epsilon_2$. With a large $\epsilon_2$, stochastic effects can reduce the height of the curvature power spectrum required to form asteroid mass black holes from $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-3}$. We investigate the possibility of the enhancement of parity-violation signal in bouncing cosmology. Specifically, we are interested in deciding which phase should generate the most significant parity-violation signals. We find that the dominant contribution comes from the bouncing phase, while the contraction phase has a smaller contribution. Therefore, bouncing cosmology can enhance the parity-violation signals during the bouncing phase. Moreover, since the bouncing phase has the highest energy scale in bouncing cosmology, we can also probe new physics at this scale by studying the parity-violation effect., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures

The linear matter power spectrum $P(k,z)$ connects theory with large scale structure observations in cosmology. Its scale dependence is entirely encoded in the matter transfer function $T(k)$, which can be computed numerically by Boltzmann solvers, and can also be computed semi-analytically by using fitting functions such as the well-known Bardeen-Bond-Kaiser-Szalay (BBKS) and Eisenstein-Hu (EH) formulae. However, both the BBKS and EH formulae have some significant drawbacks. On the one hand, although BBKS is a simple expression, it is only accurate up to $10\%$, which is well above the $1\%$ precision goal of forthcoming surveys. On the other hand, while EH is as accurate as required by upcoming experiments, it is a rather long and complicated expression. Here, we use the Genetic Algorithms (GAs), a particular machine learning technique, to derive simple and accurate fitting formulae for the transfer function $T(k)$. When the effects of massive neutrinos are also considered, our expression slightly improves over the EH formula, while being notably shorter in comparison., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. High-frequency gravitational waves can be detected by observing the frequency modulation they impart on photons. We discuss fundamental limitations to this method related to the fact that it is impossible to construct a perfectly rigid detector. We then propose several novel methods to search for O(MHz-GHz) gravitational waves based on the frequency modulation induced in the spectrum of an intense laser beam, by applying optical frequency demodulation techniques, or by using optical atomic clock technology. Curved-spacetime geometric-optics maps derived from a deep photometric survey should contain information about the three-dimensional matter distribution and thus about cosmic voids in the survey, despite projection effects. We explore to what degree sky-plane geometric-optics maps can reveal the presence of intrinsic three-dimensional voids. We carry out a cosmological $N$-body simulation and place it further than a gigaparsec from the observer, at redshift 0.5. We infer three-dimensional void structures using the watershed algorithm. Independently, we calculate a surface overdensity map and maps of weak gravitational lensing and geometric-optics scalars. We propose and implement a heuristic algorithm for detecting (projected) radial void profiles from these maps. We find in our simulation that given the sky-plane centres of the three-dimensional watershed-detected voids, there is significant evidence of correlated void centres in the surface overdensity $\Sigma$, the averaged weak-lensing tangential shear $\overline{\gamma_\perp}$, the Sachs expansion $\theta$, and the Sachs shear modulus $\lvert\sigma\rvert$. Recovering the centres of the three-dimensional voids from the sky-plane information alone is significant given the weak-lensing shear $\overline{\gamma_\perp}$, the Sachs expansion $\theta$, or the Sachs shear $\lvert\sigma\rvert$, but not significant for the surface overdensity $\Sigma$. Void radii are uncorrelated between three-dimensional and two-dimensional voids; our algorithm is not designed to distinguish voids that are nearly concentric in projection. This investigation shows preliminary evidence encouraging observational studies of gravitational lensing through individual voids, either blind or with spectroscopic/photometric redshifts. The accretion of dark matter (DM) into astrophysical black holes slowly increases their mass. The rate of this mass accretion depends on the DM model and the model parameters. If this mass accretion effect can be measured accurately enough, it is possible to rule out some DM models, and, with the sufficient technology and the help of other DM constraints, possibly confirm one model. We propose a DM probe based on accreting pulsar-black hole binaries, which provide a high-precision measurement on binary orbital phase shifts induced by DM accretion into black holes, and can help rule out DM models and study the nature of DM., 11 pages, 4 figures

The higher order generalisation of the clockwork mechanism to gravitational interactions provides a means to generate an exponentially suppressed coupling to matter from a fundamental theory of multiple interacting gravitons, without introducing large hierarchies in the underlying potential and without the need for a dilaton, suggesting a possible application to the hierarchy problem. We work in the framework of ghost free multi-gravity with "nearest-neighbour" interactions, and present a formalism by which one is able to construct potentials such that the theory will always exhibit this clockwork effect. We also consider cosmological solutions to the general theory, where all metrics are of FRW form, with site-dependent scale factors/lapses. We demonstrate the existence of multiple deSitter vacua where all metrics share the same Hubble parameter, and we solve the modified Einstein equations numerically for an example clockwork model constructed using our formalism, finding that the evolution of the metric that matter couples to is essentially equivalent to that of general relativity at the modified Planck scale. It is important to stress that while we focus on the application to clockwork theories, our work is entirely general and facilitates finding cosmological solutions to any ghost free multi-gravity theory with "nearest-neighbour" interactions. Moreover, we clarify previous work on the continuum limit of the theory, which is generically a scalar-tensor braneworld, using the Randall-Sundrum model as a special case and showing how the discrete-clockwork cosmological results map to the continuum results in the appropriate limit., 48 pages, 4 figures

The compact binary systems, spanning from the stellar to supermassive black hole, encode a wealth of information concerning stellar evolution, galaxy formation and evolution, and cosmology. An enormous number of these systems, both resolved and unresolved, emit substantial gravitational waves during their final evolutionary stages, thereby creating a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). We calculate the merger rates of stellar compact binaries and massive black hole binaries using a semi-analytic galaxy formation model -- Galaxy Assembly with Binary Evolution (GABE) in a unified and self-consistent approach, followed by an estimation of the multi-band SGWB contributed by the binary systems. We find that the amplitudes of the principal peaks of the SGWB energy density are within one order of magnitude $\Omega_{GW} \sim 10^{-9}- 10^{-8}$. This SGWB can be easily detected by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as well as planned interferometric detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope (ET) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The energy density of this background varies as $\Omega_{GW} \propto f^{2/3}$ in the SKA band. The shape of the SGWB spectrum in the frequency range $\sim[10^{-4}$,$1]$Hz could allow the space-based detector LISA to distinguish the black hole seed models. The amplitude of the SGWB from merging stellar binary black holes (BBHs) at $\sim 100$ Hz is approximately 10 and 100 times greater than those from merging binary neutron stars (BNSs) and neutron-star-black-hole (NSBH) mergers, respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Generalized disformal transformations enable us to construct the generalized disformal Horndeski theories, which form the most general class of ghost-free scalar-tensor theories to this date. We extend the effective field theory (EFT) of cosmological perturbations to incorporate these generalized disformal Horndeski theories. The main difference from the conventional EFT is that our extended EFT involves operators with higher spatial derivatives of the lapse function. Line intensity mapping (LIM) can provide a powerful means to constrain the theory of gravity and the nature of dark energy at low and high redshifts by mapping the large-scale structure (LSS) over many redshift epochs. In this paper, we investigate the potential of the next generation ground-based millimeter-wavelength LIM surveys in constraining several models beyond $\Lambda$CDM, involving either a dynamic dark energy component or modifications of the theory of gravity. We study dynamical dark energy models within Einstein's theory by means of matter perturbations and the growth index $\gamma$. Within four-dimensional General Relativity, we assume that dark energy does not cluster, and we adopt a linear ansatz for the growth index to investigate its impact on the deceleration parameter, $q$, and on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, $w$. Following this approach, we identify a relationship between $q_0$ (today's value of $q$) and $\gamma$, which to the best of our knowledge is new. For $w(z)$, we find that in most of the cases considered it crosses the -1 line (quintom) ending at a present day value $w_0 > -1$. Incredible progress on the theoretical uncertainty of the spatial correlations of the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background were recently made. However, it remains to realize the impact of this theoretical uncertainty on PTA cross correlations analysis. This paper pushes forward in this direction, as a proof--of--principle: showing the potential role that theoretical uncertainty has on unburying the stochastic GW background signal in noisy PTA cross correlation measurements. We consider both a mock data set and the noise--marginalized 12.5 years NANOGrav spatial correlation measurements, and find optimistic conclusions regardless of the physical content of the GW background and the nature of the noise in the data. Very briefly, we show through various cases a modest, but profound result that looking out for a stochastic signal is better when two of its moments are utilized. The parity violating model based on teleparallel gravity is a competitive scheme for parity violating gravity, which has been preliminary studied in the literature. To further investigate the parity violating model in teleparallel gravity, in this paper, we construct all independent parity-odd terms that are quadratic in torsion tensor and coupled to a scalar field in a way without higher-order derivatives. Using these parity-odd terms, we formulate a general parity violating scalar-tensor model in teleparallel gravity and obtain its equations of motion. To explore potentially viable models within the general model, we investigate the cosmological application of a submodel of the general model in which terms above the second power of torsion are eliminated. Cosmic strings, if they exist, source nonlinear and non-Gaussian perturbations all the way back to the time of equal matter and radiation (and earlier). Here, we compute the mass function of halos seeded by a scaling distribution of cosmic string loops, and we compare the results with the predictions of the standard Gaussian $\Lambda$CDM model. Assuming a simple linear relation between stellar mass and halo mass, we also compute the stellar mass function. The contribution of cosmic strings dominates at sufficiently high redshifts $z > z_c$ where $z_c$ depends on the mass of the halo and on the mass per unit length $\mu$ of the strings and is of the order $z_c \sim 12$ for $G\mu = 10^{-8}$. We find that strings with this value of $G\mu$ can explain the preliminary JWST data on the high redshift stellar mass density. Based on an extreme value statistic, we find that the mass of the heaviest expected string-seeded galaxy for the current JWST sky coverage is compatible with the heaviest detected galaxy. Astrometric surveys can be used to constrain the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) at very low frequencies. We use proper motion data provided by Gaia DR3 to fit a generic dipole+quadrupole field. We analyse several quasar-based datasets and discuss their purity and idoneity to set constraints on gravitational waves. For the cleanest dataset, we derive an upper bound on the (frequency-integrated) energy density of the SGWB $h_{70}^2\Omega_{\rm GW}\lesssim 0.087$ for $4.2\times 10^{-18}~\mathrm{Hz}\lesssim f\lesssim 1.1\times 10^{-8}~\mathrm{Hz}$. We also reanalyse previous VLBI-based data to set the constraint $h_{70}^2\Omega_{\rm GW}\lesssim 0.024$ for $5.8\times 10^{-18}~\mathrm{Hz}\lesssim f\lesssim 1.4\times 10^{-9}~\mathrm{Hz}$ under the same formalism, standing as the best astrometric constraint on GWs. We review a recently proposed definition of complexity of the structure of self--gravitating fluids \cite{ch1}, and the criterium to define the simplest mode of their evolution. We analyze the origin of these concepts and their possible applications in the study of gravitation collapse. We start by considering the static spherically symmetric case, extending next the study to static axially symmetric case. Afterward we consider the non--static spherically symmetric case. Two possible modes of evolution are proposed to be the simplest one. One is the homologous conditio,, however, as was shown later on, it may be useful to relax this last condition to enlarge the set of possible solutions, by adopting the so-called quasi-homologous condition. As another example of symmetry, we consider fluids endowed with hyperbolical symmetry. Exact solutions for static fluid distributions satisfying the condition of minimal complexity are presented.. An extension of the complexity factor to the vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations represented by the Bondi metric is discussed. A complexity hierarchy is established in this case, ranging from the Minkowski spacetime (the simplest one) to gravitationally radiating systems (the most complex). In a QFT on de Sitter background, one can study correlators between fields pushed to the future and past horizons of a comoving observer. This is a neat probe of the physics in the observer's causal diamond (known as the static patch). We use this observable to give a generalization of the quasinormal spectrum in interacting theories, and to connect it to the spectral density that appears in the K\"all\'en-Lehmann expansion of dS correlators. False vacuum decay, a quantum mechanical first-order phase transition in scalar field theories, is an important phenomenon in early universe cosmology. Recently, real-time semi-classical techniques based on ensembles of lattice simulations were applied to the problem of false vacuum decay. In this context, or any other lattice simulation, the effective potential experienced by long-wavelength modes is not the same as the bare potential. To make quantitative predictions using the real-time semi-classical techniques, it is therefore necessary to understand the redefinition of model parameters and the corresponding deformation of the vacuum state, as well as stochastic contributions that require modeling of unresolved subgrid modes. In this work, we focus on the former corrections and compute the expected modification of the true and false vacuum effective mass, which manifests as a modified dispersion relationship for linear fluctuations about the vacuum. We compare these theoretical predictions to numerical simulations and find excellent agreement. Motivated by this, we use the effective masses to fix the shape of a parameterized effective potential, and explore the modeling uncertainty associated with non-linear corrections. We compute the decay rates in both the Euclidean and real-time formalisms, finding qualitative agreement in the dependence on the UV cutoff. We present first-order post-Newtonian (1PN) approximations of a general imperfect fluid and of an axion as a coherently oscillating massive scalar field, both in the cosmological context. For the axion, using the Klein transformation and Madelung transformation we derive the Schr\"odinger and Madelung hydrodynamic formulations, respectively, in exact covariant way and to 1PN order. Complete sets of equations for the 1PN formulations are derived without fixing the temporal gauge condition. There have been many efforts in the last three decades to embed the empirical MOND program into a robust theoretical framework. While many such theories can explain the profile of galactic rotation curves, they usually cannot explain the evolution 15 the primordial fluctuations and the formation of large-scale-structures in the Universe. The Aether Scalar Tensor (AeST) theory seems to have overcome this difficulty, thereby providing the first compelling example of an extension of general relativity able to successfully challenge the particle dark matter hypothesis. Here we study the phenomenology of this theory in the quasistatic weak-field regime and specifically for the idealised case of spherical isolated sources. We find the existence of three distinct gravitational regimes, that is, Newtonian, MOND and a third regime characterised by the presence of oscillations in the gravitational potential which do not exist in the traditional MOND paradigm. We identify the transition scales between these three regimes and discuss their dependence on the boundary conditions and other parameters in the theory. Aided by analytical and numerical solutions, we explore the dependence of these solutions on the theory parameters. Our results could help in searching for interesting observable phenomena at low redshift pertaining to galaxy dynamics as well as lensing observations, however, this may warrant proper N-body simulations that go beyond the idealised case of spherical isolated sources., 15 pages, 8 figures

Two-field mimetic gravity was recently realized by looking at the singular limit of the conformal transformation between the auxiliary metric and the physical metric with two scalar fields involved. In this paper, we reanalyze the singular conformal limit and find a more general solution for the conformal factor A, which greatly broadens the form of two-field mimetic constraint and thus extends the two-field mimetic gravity. We find the general setup still mimics the roles of dark matter at the cosmological background level. Moreover, we extend the action by introducing extra possible term for phenomenological interests. Surprisingly, some special cases are found to be equivalent to general relativity, k-essence theory and Galileon theory. Finally, we further extend the theory by allowing the expression of mimetic constraint to be arbitrary without imposed condition, and show that the dark matter-like behavior is unaffected even in this extension., 17 pages, the version accepted by JHEP

Black hole superradiance provides a window into the dynamics of light scalar fields and their interactions close to a rotating black hole. Due to the rotation of the black hole, the amplitude of the scalar field becomes magnified, leading to a "black hole bomb" effect. Recent work has demonstrated that rotating black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity possess unique structures, the "Chern-Simons caps," which may influence the behavior of matter near the black hole. Motivated by the presence of these caps, we study superradiance in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity in the context of a slowly rotating black hole. We find that additional modes are excited and contribute to the superradiance beyond what is expected for a Kerr black hole. Studying the superradiant spectrum of perturbations, we find that the Chern-Simons contributions give rise to small corrections to the angular dependence of the resulting scalar cloud. Unlike F(R) gravity, pure metric F(T) gravity in the vacuum dominated era, ends up with an imaginary action and is therefore not feasible. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) provide a way to detect gravitational waves at nanohertz frequencies. In this band, the most likely signals are stochastic, with a power spectrum that rises steeply at lower frequencies. Indeed, the observation of a common red noise process in pulsar-timing data suggests that the first credible detection of nanohertz-frequency gravitational waves could take place within the next few years. The detection process is complicated by the nature of the signals and the noise: the first observational claims will be statistical inferences drawn at the threshold of detectability. To demonstrate that gravitational waves are creating some of the noise in the pulsar-timing data sets, observations must exhibit the Hellings and Downs curve -- the angular correlation function associated with gravitational waves -- as well as demonstrating that there are no other reasonable explanations. To ensure that detection claims are credible, the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA) has a formal process to vet results prior to publication. This includes internal sharing of data and processing pipelines between different PTAs, enabling independent cross-checks and validation of results. To oversee and validate any detection claim, the IPTA has also created an eight-member Detection Committee (DC) which includes four independent external members. IPTA members will only publish their results after a formal review process has concluded. This document is the initial DC checklist, describing some of the conditions that should be fulfilled by a credible detection. We investigate the gravitational lensing effect around a spherically symmetric black hole, whose metric is obtained from the Einstein field equation with electric charge and perfect-fluid dark matter contributing to its energy-momentum tensor. We do the calculation analytically in the weak field limit and we assume that both the charge and the dark matter are much less abundant (only give rise to the next-leading-order contribution) in comparison to the black hole mass. In particular, we derive the light deflection angle and the size of the Einstein ring, where approximations up to the next-leading order are done with extra care, especially for the logarithmic term from perfect-fluid dark matter. Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) have recently attracted much attention as they may explain some of the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA observations and significantly contribute to the dark matter in our universe. The next generation of Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors will have the unique opportunity to set stringent bounds on this putative population of objects. Focusing on the Einstein Telescope (ET), in this paper we analyse in detail the impact of systematics and different detector designs on our future capability of observing key quantities that would allow us to discover and/or constrain a population of PBH mergers. We also perform a population analysis, with a mass and redshift distribution compatible with the current observational bounds. Our results indicate that ET alone can reach an exquisite level of accuracy on the key observables considered, as well as detect up to tens of thousands of PBH binaries per year, but for some key signatures (in particular high--redshift sources) the cryogenic instrument optimised for low frequencies turns out to be crucial, both for the number of observations and the error on the parameters reconstruction. As far as the detector geometry is concerned, we find that a network consisting of two separated L--shaped interferometers of 15 (20)~km arm length, oriented at $45^{\circ}$ with respect to each other performs better than a single triangular shaped instrument of 10 (15)~km arm length, for all the metrics considered., 24 pages, 13 figures

A successful measurement of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) in Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) would open up a new window through which to test the predictions of General Relativity (GR). We consider how these measurements might reveal deviations from GR by studying the overlap reduction function -- the quantity that in GR is approximated by the Hellings-Downs curve -- in some sample modifications of gravity, focusing on the generic prediction of a modified dispersion relation for gravitational waves. We find a distinct signature of such modifications to GR -- a shift in the minimum angle of the angular distribution -- and demonstrate that this shift is quantitatively sensitive to any change in the phase velocity. Its main assumption is infinite mutually commuting observables in the Universe, leading to representation of $SU(\infty)$ by its Hilbert spaces and those of its subsystems. Nonetheless, quantum fluctuations induce clustering and finite rank internal symmetries, which approximately divide the Universe to infinite interacting subsystems. Future ground-based gravitational wave observatories will be ideal probes of the environments surrounding black holes with masses $1 - 10\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$. Binary black hole mergers with mass ratios of order $q=m_2/m_1\lesssim10^{-3}$ can remain in the frequency band of such detectors for months or years, enabling precision searches for modifications of their gravitational waveforms with respect to vacuum inspirals. As a concrete example of an environmental effect, we consider here a population of binary primordial black holes which are expected to be embedded in dense cold dark matter spikes. We provide a viable formation scenario for these systems compatible with all observational constraints, and predict upper and lower limits on the merger rates of small mass ratio pairs. Given a detected signal of one such system by either Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer, we show that the properties of the binary and of the dark matter spike can be measured to excellent precision with one week's worth of data, if the effect of the dark matter spike on the waveform is taken into account. However, we show that there is a risk of biased parameter inference or missing the events entirely if the effect of the predicted dark matter overdensity around these objects is not properly accounted for., Comment: 14 pages plus appendices, 15 figures

We study the non-perturbative evolution of inflationary fluctuations during preheating using fully non-linear general-relativistic field-theory simulations. We choose a single-field inflationary model that is consistent with observational constraints and start the simulations at the end of inflation with fluctuations both in the field and its conjugate momentum. Gravity enhances the growth of density perturbations, which then collapse and virialize, forming long-lived stable oscillon-like stars that reach compactnesses $\mathcal{C}\equiv GM/R \sim 10^{-3}-10^{-2}$. We find that $\mathcal{C}$ increases for larger field models, until it peaks due to the interplay between the overdensity growth and Hubble expansion rates. Whilst gravitational effects can play an important role in the formation of compact oscillons during preheating, the objects are unlikely to collapse into primordial black holes without an additional enhancement of the initial inflationary fluctuations., 7 pages. 4 figures. Employing the spherical collapse (SC) formalism, we investigate the linear evolution of the matter over-density for energy-momentum-squared gravity (EMSG), which in practical phenomenological terms, one may imagine as an extension of the {\Lambda}CDM model of cosmology. The underlying model, while still having a cosmological constant, is a non-linear material extension of the general theory of relativity (GTR) and includes correction terms that are dominant in the high-energy regime, the early universe. Considering the Friedman{Robertson{Walker (FRW) background in the presence of a cosmological constant, we find the effects of the modifications arising from EMSG on the growth of perturbations at the early stages of the universe. Considering both possible negative and positive values of the model parameter of EMSG, we discuss its role in the evolution of the matter density contrast and growth function in the level of linear perturbations. While EMSG leaves imprints distinguishable from {\Lambda}CDM, we find that the negative range of the ESMG model parameter is not well-behaved, indicating an anomaly in the parameter space of the model. In this regard, for the evaluation of the galaxy cluster number count in the framework of EMSG, we equivalently provide an analysis of the number count of the gravitationally collapsed objects (or the dark matter halos). We show that the galaxy cluster number count decreases compared to the {\Lambda}CDM model. We study the gravitational Bose-Einstein condensation of a massive vector field in the kinetic regime and the non-relativistic limit using non-linear dynamical numerical methods. Gravitational condensation leads to the spontaneous formation of solitons. We measure the condensation time and growth rate, and compare to analytical models in analogy to the scalar case. We find that the condensation time of the vector field depends on the correlation between its different components. For fully correlated configurations, the condensation time is the same as that for a scalar field. On the other hand, uncorrelated or partially correlated configurations condense slower than the scalar case. As the vector soliton grows, it can acquire a net spin angular momentum even if the total spin angular momentum of the initial conditions is zero., 10 pages, 11 figures

In this paper, we constrain the linear dark-matter-related parameter of a static spherically symmetric f(R) black hole spacetime regarding the observed angular diameters of M87* and Sgr A* from the EHT. We then investigate the light deflection angles inferred from direct analytical calculation of null geodesics and that obtained from the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Assuming an optically thin accretion disk for the black hole and after discussing its properties, we conceive different emission profiles and investigate the shadow cast of this black hole when it is illuminated by the disk. Furthermore, we simulate the brightness of an infalling spherical accretion in the context of the silhouette imaging of the black hole. We find that, excluding some specific cases, the specific observed brightness of the accretion disk consists of the direct emission, rather than that for the lensing and photon rings. Furthermore, it is revealed that the linear dark parameter of the black hole has considerable effects on the size of the shadow and its brightness.
