The present research attempts to identify the impact of retracted papers on previous or subsequent papers. We consider the 5693 retracted papers from 1975 to 2020 indexed in the Web of Science database based on bibliometric methods. We use HistCite, Excel, and SPSS software as technical means. The findings suggest a significant difference between the average number of retracted and unretracted papers when cited in retracted papers. Furthermore, there is a significant difference between the average number of unretracted and retracted papers citing retracted papers. The reasons for the retraction of an article may not be the previous retracted papers, yet unretracted papers may be retracted later because of referring to (many) retracted papers. The recently adopted Ariel ESA mission will measure the atmospheric composition of a large number of exoplanets. This information will then be used to better constrain planetary bulk compositions. While the connection between the composition of a planetary atmosphere and the bulk interior is still being investigated, the combination of the atmospheric composition with the measured mass and radius of exoplanets will push the field of exoplanet characterisation to the next level, and provide new insights of the nature of planets in our galaxy. This paper investigates the impact of institutes and papers over time based on the heterogeneous institution-citation network. A new model, IPRank, is introduced to measure the impact of institution and paper simultaneously. This model utilises the heterogeneous structural measure method to unveil the impact of institution and paper, reflecting the effects of citation, institution, and structural measure. To evaluate the performance, the model first constructs a heterogeneous institution-citation network based on the American Physical Society (APS) dataset. Subsequently, PageRank is used to quantify the impact of institution and paper. Finally, impacts of same institution are merged, and the ranking of institutions and papers is calculated. Experimental results show that the IPRank model better identifies universities that host Nobel Prize laureates, demonstrating that the proposed technique well reflects impactful research. Scientific writing is an important skill for a career as a professional astrophysicist. Very few researchers, however, receive any formal training in how to write scientific research papers of high quality in an efficient manner. This paper (Paper I) is the first of a two-part self-help guide in scientific writing to address this skills gap. Paper I focuses on planning your academic research paper in astronomy. We discuss how to crystallise the ideas that underlie a research project, analyse how the paper can be constructed considering the audience and the chosen journal, and give an overview of the publishing process. In this white paper, we review five top considerations for selecting locations of the fields of the Roman High-latitude Time Domain Survey. Based on these considerations, we recommend Akari Deep Field South (ADFS)/Euclid Deep Field South (EDFS) in the Southern Hemisphere has it avoids bright stars, has minimal Milky Way dust, is in Roman Continuous viewing zone, overlaps with multiple past and future surveys, and minimal zodiacal background variation. The current reference High-latitude time domain survey increases the completeness of transients with prism temporal time series data by adjusting the ratio of prism-to-imaging time. However, there are two other nobs that allow for a more complete prism coverage: prism cadence and exposure time. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's (RST) Wide Field Imager (WFI) is equipped with a slitless prism that can be used for spectroscopic discovery and follow-up of explosive transients at high redshift as part of its High Latitude Time Domain Survey. This is new and unique spectroscopic capability, not only for its original purpose for cosmology, but also for other types of explosive transients. This white paper is intended to help make this new capability more clear to the community. The depth of the RST prism compared to ground-based spectrographs is explored, showing that the RST prism will be unrivaled in the observer-frame NIR. The influence of the selected sky locations on the speed and homogeneity of a RST prism survey is also estimated. This unique new capability should be considered when balancing the HLTDS time devoted to cadenced imaging and spectroscopy.

Compact object binaries (a black hole or a neutron star orbiting a non-degenerate stellar companion) are key to our understanding of late massive star evolution, in addition to being some of the best probes of extreme gravity and accretion physics. Gaia has opened the door to astrometric studies of these systems, enabling geometric distance measurements, kinematic estimation, and the ability to find new previously unknown systems through measurement of binary orbital elements. Particularly puzzling are newly found massive black holes in wide orbits (~AU or more) whose evolutionary history is difficult to explain. Astrometric identification of such binaries is challenging for Gaia, with only two such examples currently known. Roman's enormous grasp, superb sensitivity, sharp PSF and controlled survey strategy can prove to be a game-changer in this field, extending astrometric studies of compact object binaries several mag deeper than Gaia. We propose to use the microlensing Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey to identify new wide-orbit black hole compact object binaries, determine their prevalence and their spatial distribution, thus opening up new parameter space in binary population studies., Submitted to the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope CCS White Paper call (4.5 pages of text + figures, references and a cover sheet). Biases against women in the workplace have been documented in various studies. There is also a growing body of literature on biases within academia. But particularly in STEM, due to the heavily male-dominated field, studies suggest that if one's gender is identifiable, women are more likely to get their papers rejected and not cited as often as men. We propose two simple modifications to tackle gender bias in STEM that can be applied to (but not only) IEEE conferences and journals. Regarding paper acceptance, we propose a double-blind review, and regarding paper citation, we propose one single letter to identify the authors' first names, followed by their family names. We also propose other modifications regarding gender bias in STEM and academia and encourage further reforms supported by current research on this topic with gender-segregated data.

The measurement of the cross-correlation function is crucial to assess magnification bias in galaxy surveys. Previous works used mini-tile subsampling, but accurately determining the integral constraint (IC) correction for unbiased estimation is challenging due to various factors. We present a new methodology for estimating the cross-correlation function, utilizing full field area and reducing statistical uncertainty. Covariance matrices were estimated by dividing each field into at least five patches using a k-mean clustering algorithm. Robustness was assessed by comparing spectroscopic and photometric lens samples, yielding compatible results. Cross-correlation and auto-correlation analyses in the GAMA fields revealed a stronger signal in GAMA15, likely due to rare large-scale structure combinations. Our findings highlight the robustness of the new methodology and suggest sample-specific effects. Climate changes may affect ecosystems destabilising relationships among species. We investigate the spatial rock-paper-scissors models with a regional unevenness that reduces the selection capacity of organisms of one species. Our results show that the regionally weak species predominates in the local ecosystem, while spiral patterns appear far from the region, where individuals of every species play the rock-paper-scissors game with the same strength. Because the weak species controls all local territory, it is attractive for the other species to enter the local ecosystem to conquer the territory. However, our stochastic simulations show that the transitory waves formed when organisms of the strong species reach the region are quickly destroyed because of local strength unbalance in the selection game rules. Computing the effect of the topology on population dynamics, we find that the prevalence of the weak species becomes more significant if the transition of the selection capacity to the area of uneven rock-paper-scissors rules is smooth. Finally, our findings show that the biodiversity loss due to the arising of regional unevenness is minimised if the transition to the region where the cyclic game is unbalanced is abrupt. Nanogenerators and self-powered nanosensors have shown the potential to power low-consumption electronics and human-machine interfaces, but their practical implementation requires reliable, environmentally friendly and scalable, processes for manufacturing and processing. This article presents a plasma synthesis approach for the fabrication of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and self-powered sensors on paper substrates. Polycrystalline ZnO nanocolumnar thin films are deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition on common paper supports using a microwave electron cyclotron resonance reactor working at room temperature yielding high growth rates and low structural and interfacial stresses. Applying Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, we elucidate the basic shadowing mechanism behind the characteristic microstructure and porosity of the ZnO thin films, relating them to an enhanced piezoelectric response to periodic and random inputs. The piezoelectric devices are assembled by embedding the ZnO films in PMMA and using Au electrodes in two different configurations: laterally and vertically contacted devices. We present the response of the laterally connected devices as a force sensor for low-frequency events with different answers to the applied force depending on the impedance circuit, i.e. load values range, a behaviour that is theoretically analyzed. The vertical devices reach power densities as high as 80 nW/cm2 with a mean power output of 20 nW/cm2. We analyze their actual-scenario performance by activation with a fan and handwriting. Overall, this work demonstrates the advantages of implementing plasma deposition for piezoelectric films to develop robust, flexible, stretchable, and enhanced-performance nanogenerators and self-powered piezoelectric sensors compatible with inexpensive and recyclable supports, 30 pages, 8 figures in main text

The impact and originality are two critical dimensions for evaluating scientific publications, measured by citation and disruption metrics respectively. Despite the extensive effort made to understand the statistical properties and evolution of each of these metrics, the relations between the two remain unclear. In this paper, we study the evolution during last 70 years of the correlation between scientific papers' citation and disruption, finding surprisingly a decreasing trend from positive to negative correlations over the years. Consequently, during the years, there are fewer and fewer disruptive works among the highly cited papers. These results suggest that highly disruptive studies nowadays attract less attention from the scientific community. The analysis on papers' references supports this trend, showing that papers citing older references, less popular references and diverse references become to have less citations. Possible explanations for the less attention phenomenon could be due to the increasing information overload in science, and citations become more and more prominent for impact. This is supported by the evidence that research fields with more papers have a more negative correlation between citation and disruption. In this response, I present a thorough examination of the assertions and methods in the paper. Although I may disagree with several practices in the research group, I will confine my discussion to the academic analysis of the paper in this response., I published "Theoretical understanding of evolutionary dynamics on inhomogeneous networks" with other people. Graphene nanosheets (GNS) paper is widely regarded as a promising candidate for heat dissipation due to its outstanding thermal conductivity. However, the accompanied high electrical conductivity makes it unfavorable for thermal management of high power electronics since it runs a high risk of short circuits. To eliminate the risk from the high electrical conductivity and simultaneously maintain the excellent thermal performance, we introduce boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) that possess high thermal conductivity but electrical insulation into the GNS paper. The hybrid paper has a much lower electrical conductivity but similar thermal performance compared to the pristine GNS paper. Besides, the flexible hybrid paper exhibits better thermal stability than pure GNS paper. Our results show that the ability of BNNS to change the electrical conductivity of paper without affecting its thermal conductivity is potential for the application of heat management materials with tailored electrical properties.

This work concerns studies of field electron emission (FE) from large area emitters. It discusses--and where possible corrects--several literature weaknesses related to the analysis of experimental current-voltage data and related emitter characterization, using a recent paper in Applied Surface Science to exemplify these weaknesses. One weakness, not detected in the published paper, is that current-density experiments and related theoretical predictions there differ by a large factor, in this case of order 10^(16). The work also shows that a recently introduced validity test--the "magic emitter" test--can be used, at the immediate-pre-submission or review stages, to help uncover scientific problems. More generally, in the literature of FE from large area emitters over the last 15 years or so, there appear to be many papers (perhaps hundreds of papers) with some or all of the weaknesses discussed. The scientific integrity of this research area, and of the related peer review processes, appear to be significantly broken, and attempts to correct the situation by the normal processes of science have had limited effect. There seems a growing case for independent wider investigation into research integrity issues of this general kind, and possibly for later action by Governments., 15 pages, 0 figures. There has been a growing effort to replace hand extraction of data from research papers with automated data extraction based on natural language processing, language models, and recently, large language models (LLMs). Although these methods enable efficient extraction of data from large sets of research papers, they require a significant amount of up-front effort, expertise, and coding. In this work we propose the ChatExtract method that can fully automate very accurate data extraction with minimal initial effort and background, using an advanced conversational LLM. ChatExtract consists of a set of engineered prompts applied to a conversational LLM that both identify sentences with data, extract that data, and assure the data's correctness through a series of follow-up questions. These follow-up questions largely overcome known issues with LLMs providing factually inaccurate responses. ChatExtract can be applied with any conversational LLMs and yields very high quality data extraction. In tests on materials data we find precision and recall both close to 90% from the best conversational LLMs, like ChatGPT-4. We demonstrate that the exceptional performance is enabled by the information retention in a conversational model combined with purposeful redundancy and introducing uncertainty through follow-up prompts. These results suggest that approaches similar to ChatExtract, due to their simplicity, transferability, and accuracy are likely to become powerful tools for data extraction in the near future. The single-mode bosonic channel is addressed with classical interference in the modulation and with side information at the transmitter. This model can viewed as the quantum counterpart of the classical random-parameter Gaussian channel. Based on Costa's writing-on-dirty-paper result (1983), the effect of the channel parameter can be canceled even when the decoder has no side information, and regardless of the input power constraint. For both homodyne and heterodyne detection with a coherent-state protocol, the model reduces to a classical channel with either real or complex-valued Gaussian noise. Thereby, by applying Costa's dirty paper coding strategy, we observe that the effect of the classical interference can be canceled for those channels as well. Then, we consider the bosonic channel with joint detection, for which the classical results do not apply, and derive a dirty-paper coding lower bound. Furthermore, considering the special case of a pure-loss bosonic channel, we demonstrate that the optimal coefficient for dirty paper coding is not necessarily the MMSE estimator coefficient as in the classical setting.

Roman telescope provides the best opportunity to detect a large number of Isolated Stellar-Mass Black Holes (ISMBHs) through microlensing. Roman will not only detect long-duration microlensing events caused by ISMBHs, but will also measure the deflections caused by the ISMBHs, which can be used to estimate their masses. Recently, Sajadian and Sahu (2023) studied the efficiency of detecting ISMBHs by Roman through simulation of a large ensemble of such events. They estimated the resulting errors in the physical parameters of the lens objects, including their masses, distances, and proper motions through calculating Fisher and Covariance matrices. Their simulation shows that the 2.3-year time gap between Roman's first three and the last three observing seasons not only lowers the efficiency of detection, but also makes the solutions degenerate. We recommend a small amount of additional observations -- about one hour of observations every 10 to 20 days when the Bulge is observable during the large time gap -- which is equivalent to a total of about one to two additional days of observations with Roman. This small amount of additional observations will greatly improve the efficiency and robustness of detection of ISMBHs, and provide firm estimates of their masses., 4 pages, 2 figures

We present arguments for including observations with all of the Wide Field Instrument imaging filters, with the exception of F146, within the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (\emph{Roman}) High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS). Despite multiple previous searches, no transiting planets have yet been identified within a globular cluster. This is believed to be due to a combination of factors: the low metallicities of most globular clusters suggests that there is significantly less planet-forming material per star in most globular clusters relative to the solar neighborhood, the high likelihood of dynamical interactions can also disrupt planetary orbits, and the data available for globular clusters is limited. However, transiting planets have been identified in open clusters, indicating that there may be planets in more massive clusters that have simply gone undetected, or that more massive clusters inhibit planet formation. Less than two degrees away from the nominal Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey footprint, two globular clusters, NGC 6522 and NGC 6528, can be simultaneously observed by the Roman telescope during the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey. These clusters are comparable in mass (1-2 x 10$^5$ solar masses) and age (12 Gyr), but feature drastically different average metallicities: NGC 6522 has an average [Fe/H] $\sim$ -1.3, while NGC 6528 has an average [Fe/H] $\sim$ -0.1. If no transiting planets are detected in one season of time domain observations of these clusters, this would indicate a difference in planet occurrence among field stars and globular clusters at >3-$\sigma$ significance even after accounting for metallicity, which could be enhanced to >5-$\sigma$ significance with similar observations of another nearby field hosting a metal-rich globular cluster. Additionally, time domain observations of NGC 6522 and NGC 6528 will detect variable stars in both clusters, testing the connection between stellar variability and binary fraction to metallicity and cluster environment, as well as testing the dependence of exoplanet yields on stellar density and distance from the Galactic midplane., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Analysing the available data relative to the anisotropies of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) at intermediate angular scales, we examine to what extent they can be used to constrain the origin of these particles, and what could be gained from a new generation of observatories with increased exposure. We simulate realistic UHECR sky maps for a wide range of scenarios, with the assumption that the distribution of UHECR sources follows that of matter in the Universe, also considering possible biases. We produce numerous datasets on which we apply similar analyses as those recently used by the Auger and TA collaborations. We find that: i) the investigated scenarios can easily account for the significance of the anisotropies reported by Auger and TA; ii) the direction in which the maximum flux excess is found in the Auger data differs from where it is found in most of our simulations; iii) for datasets simulated with the same astrophysical scenario, the significance with which the isotropy hypothesis is rejected through the Auger likelihood analysis can be largest either when "all galaxies" or when "starburst" galaxies are used to model the signal, depending on which GMF model is used; iv) the study of the energy evolution of the anisotropy patterns can provide new insight about the origin of UHECRs; v) the direction in which the most significant flux excess is found in the Auger dataset above 8 EeV appears to essentially disappear in the dataset above 32 EeV; vi) this appears to be very uncommon in our simulations, which could point to a failure of some generic assumption in the investigated scenarios, such as the predominance of a unique type of sources in the flux above the ankle, with essentially the same composition and spectrum; vii) a meaningful measurement of their energy evolution, from 10 EeV to the highest energies, will require a significant increase in statistics., Comment: 28 pages, 23 figures

In this note, we shall point out that all ``numerically calculations '' and figures in \cite{CaFrLeVa-23} are wrong because these calculations are based on some incorrect formulas. Furthermore, by pointing out several serious mistakes in \cite{CaFrLeVa-23} and especially by Proposition 7.1 and Remarks 7.2--7.3 we show that the conclusions published by Matteo Capoferri, Leonid Friedlander, Michael Levitin and Dmitri Vassiliev (J Geom Anal (2023)33:242) are completely wrong. We study the spatial rock-paper-scissors model, where resource competitors' cyclic dominance impacts organisms' energy levels. Our model assumes that failed selection interactions can lead to energy loss, reducing the chances of success in the spatial game and hastening decline. To prevent death by energy insufficiency, organisms of one out of the species strategically perform a trade-off between reproduction and mobility. When prioritising exploring more extensive areas, organisms aim to maximise the chances of acquiring resources to regain high energy levels. Through simulation, we examine the effect of survival behaviour on species segregation and spatial patterns. Our outcomes show that the trade-off between offspring generation and accelerated movement effectively protects individuals from death due to lack of energy. Moreover, the risk of being eliminated by an enemy in the cyclic game reduces due to the behavioural strategy. Considering a three-state model, we quantify how the trade-off parameter controls the organisms' energy recovery. Computing the median organisms' survival time, we find that although individuals performing the trade-off strategy may live longer, the organisms of other species are negatively affected by a life expectancy reduction. An emerging alternative to conventional Augmented Reality (AR) glasses designs, Beaming displays promise slim AR glasses free from challenging design trade-offs, including battery-related limits or computational budget-related issues. These beaming displays remove active components such as batteries and electronics from AR glasses and move them to a projector that projects images to a user from a distance (1-2 meters), where users wear only passive optical eyepieces. However, earlier implementations of these displays delivered poor resolutions (7 cycles per degree) without any optical focus cues and were introduced with a bulky form-factor eyepiece (50 mm thick). This paper introduces a new milestone for beaming displays, which we call HoloBeam. In this new design, a custom holographic projector populates a micro-volume located at some distance (1-2 meters) with multiple planes of images. Users view magnified copies of these images from this small volume with the help of an eyepiece that is either a Holographic Optical Element (HOE) or a set of lenses. Our HoloBeam prototypes demonstrate the thinnest AR glasses to date with a submillimeter thickness (e.g., HOE film is only 120 um thick). Paper holds the promise to replace silicon substrates in applications like internet of things or disposable electronics that require ultra-low-cost electronic components and an environmentally friendly electronic waste management. In the last years, spurred by the abovementioned properties of paper as a substrate and the exceptional electronic, mechanical and optical properties of van der Waals (vdW) materials, many research groups have worked towards the integration of vdW materials-based devices on paper. Recently, a method to deposit a continuous film of densely packed interconnects of vdW materials on paper by simply rubbing the vdW crystals against the rough surface of paper has been presented. This method utilizes the weak interlayer vdW interactions and allows cleaving of the crystals into micro platelets through the abrasion against the paper. Here, we aim to illustrate the general character and the potential of this technique by fabricating films of 39 different vdW materials (including superconductors, semi-metals, semiconductors, and insulators) on standard copier paper. We have thoroughly characterized their optical properties showing their high optical quality: one can easily resolve the absorption band edge of semiconducting vdW materials and even the excitonic features present in some vdW materials with high exciton binding energy. We also measured the electrical resistivity for several vdW materials films on paper finding exceptionally low values, which are in some cases, orders of magnitude lower than those reported for analogous films produced by inkjet printing. We demonstrate multiplexed computational sensing with a point-of-care serodiagnosis assay to simultaneously quantify three biomarkers of acute cardiac injury. This point-of-care sensor includes a paper-based fluorescence vertical flow assay (fxVFA) processed by a low-cost mobile reader, which quantifies the target biomarkers through trained neural networks, all within 0.9 linearity and < 15 % coefficient of variation. The competitive performance of this multiplexed computational fxVFA along with its inexpensive paper-based design and handheld footprint make it a promising point-of-care sensor platform that could expand access to diagnostics in resource-limited settings., 17 Pages, 6 Figures

We run stochastic simulations of the spatial version of the rock-paper-scissors game, considering that individuals use sensory abilities to scan the environment to detect the presence of enemies. If the local dangerousness level is above a tolerable threshold, individuals aggregate instead of moving randomly on the lattice. We study the impact of the locally adaptive aggregation on the organisms' spatial organisation by measuring the characteristic length scale of the spatial domains occupied by organisms of a single species. Our results reveal that aggregation is beneficial if triggered when the local density of opponents does not exceed $30\%$; otherwise, the behavioural strategy may harm individuals by increasing the average death risk. We show that if organisms can perceive further distances, they can accurately scan and interpret the signals from the neighbourhood, maximising the effects of the locally adaptive aggregation on the death risk. Finally, we show that the locally adaptive aggregation behaviour promotes biodiversity independently of the organism's mobility. The coexistence probability rises if organisms join conspecifics, even in the presence of a small number of enemies. We verify that our conclusions hold for more complex systems by simulating the generalised rock-paper-scissors models with five and seven species. We study generalised rock-paper-scissors models with an arbitrary odd number N \geq 5 of species, among which n are weak, with 2 \leq n \leq (N-1)/2. Because of the species' weakness, the probability of individuals conquering territory in the cyclic spatial game is low. Running stochastic simulations, we study the role of unevenness in the rock-paper-scissors game in spatial patterns and population dynamics, considering diverse models where the weak species are in different positions in the cyclic game order. Studying systems with five and seven species, we discover that the individuals' spatial organisation arising from the pattern formation process determines the stability of the cyclic game with multiple weak species. Our outcomes show that the presence of species unbalances the spatial distribution of organisms of the same species bringing consequences on territorial dominance, with the predominant species being determined by the position in the cyclic game order. Our simulations elucidate that, in general, the further apart the regions inhabited by different weak species are, the less the coexistence between the species is jeopardised. We show that if multiple weak species occupy adjacent spatial domains, the unevenness in the cyclic game is reinforced, maximising the chances of biodiversity loss. The state-of-the-art in paper mechanics calls for novel experimental data covering the full-field hygro-expansion of inter-fiber bonds in paper, i.e., the 3D morphological changes and inter-fiber interactions. Therefore, a recently developed full-field single fiber hygro-expansion measurement methodology based on global digital height correlation is extended to orthogonally bonded inter-fiber bonds, to investigate their full-field quasi-3D hygroscopic behavior. A sample holder has been developed which enables the quasi-3D characterization of the initial geometry of individual inter-fiber bonds, including the fiber thickness and width along the length of the fibers as well as the degree of wrap around and contact area of the bond, which are vital for understanding the inter-fiber bond hygro-mechanics. Full-field hygroscopic testing revealed novel insights on the inter-fiber interactions: (i) the transverse hygro-expansion of each fiber strongly reduces when approaching the bonded area, due to the significantly lower longitudinal hygro-expansion of the other bonded fiber. (ii) The relatively large transverse strain of one fiber stretches the other crossing fiber in its longitudinal direction, thereby significantly contributing to the sheet scale hygro-expansion. (iii) Out-of-plane bending is observed in the bonded region which is driven by the significant difference in transverse and longitudinal hygro-expansion of, respectively, the top and bottom fiber constituting the bond. A bi-layer laminate model is derived to rationalize the bending deformation and an adequate match is found with the experimental data. Under the assumption of zero bending, which represents constrained inter-fiber bonds inside a paper sheet, the model is able to predict the contribution of the transverse strain in the bonded regions to the sheet-scale hygro-expansion., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We present the white paper developed during the QEYSSat 2.0 study, which was undertaken between June 2021 and March 2022. The study objective was to establish a technology road-map for a Canada-wide quantum network enabled by satellites. We survey the state-of-art in quantum communication technologies, identify the main applications and architectures, review the technical readiness levels and technology bottlenecks and identify a future mission scenario. We report the findings of a dedicated one-day workshop that included Canadian stakeholders from government, industry and academia to gather inputs and insights for the applications and technical road-map. We also provide an overview of the Quantum EncrYption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat) mission expected to launch in 2024-2025 and its anticipated outcomes. One of the main outcomes of this study is that developing the main elements for a Canada-wide quantum internet will have the highest level of impact, which includes Canada-wide entanglement distribution and teleportation. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely used in various applications due to their extraordinary properties. In particular, their electrochemical stability, low electrical resistance, and huge specific surface area make them very interesting active materials for supercapacitors. Herein, flexible, biodegradable, and low-cost supercapacitors are introduced in a very simple way based on hand-drawing pencil traces or -rubbing molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), titanium trisulfide (TiS3) and franckeite traces on the paper. Results demonstrate that pencil-drawn paper has higher capacitance performance (~6.39 F/g) among the suggested electrodes. Interestingly, the introduced MoS2/pencil, TiS3/pencil, and franckeite/pencil drawn paper electrodes reveal dramatic improvements with long cyclic life thanks to the occurrence of synergetic effects and higher available active cites within the heterostructures. Moreover, the assembled symmetric solid-state supercapacitors retain their performance even under applied bending, indicating their excellent potential for wearable/flexible applications.

Both Poincar\'e in his 1900 Festschrift paper \cite{Poincare} and Einstein in his 1905 \textsl{Annalen der Physik} article \cite{Einstein} were led to $E=mc^2$ by considering electromagnetic processes taking place in vacuo. Poincar\'e's treatment is based on a generalization of the law of conservation of momentum to include radiation. Einstein's analysis relies solely on energy conservation and the relativity principle together with certain assumptions, which have served as the source of criticism of the paper beginning with Max Planck in 1907. We show that these objections raised by Planck and others can be traced back to Einstein's failure to make use of momentum considerations. Relevance of our findings to a proper understanding of Ives' criticism of Einstein's paper is pointed out.

Paper has the potential to dramatically reduce the cost of electronic components. In fact, paper is 10 000 times cheaper than crystalline silicon, motivating the research to integrate electronic materials on paper substrates. Among the different electronic materials, van der Waals materials are attracting the interest of the scientific community working on paper-based electronics because of the combination of high electrical performance and mechanical flexibility. Up to now, different methods have been developed to pattern conducting, semiconducting and insulating van der Waals materials on paper but the integration of superconductors remains elusive. Here, the deposition of NbSe2, an illustrative van der Waals superconductor, on standard copy paper is demonstrated. The deposited NbSe2 films on paper display superconducting properties (e.g. observation of Meissner effect and resistance drop to zero-resistance state when cooled down below its critical temperature) similar to those of bulk NbSe2., Paper has the potential to dramatically reduce the cost of electronic components but the integration of electronic materials is challenging. Here the integration of NbSe2, a van der Waals superconductor, on paper is demonstrated.

Adam Brown and Leonard Susskind write in their new paper, "A holographic wormhole traversed in a quantum computer": "The idea of a wormhole dates back to 1935, when Albert Einstein and his collaborator, Nathan Rosen, studied black holes in the context of Einstein's general theory of relativity. [...] In the same year, Einstein and Rosen wrote another paper, this time in collaboration with Boris Podolsky. [...] At the time, these two ideas - wormholes and entanglement - were considered to be entirely separate". I will show in this comment that for Einstein the Einstein-Rosen (ER) bridge and the EPR argument were not "entirely separate".

Hot QCD physics studies the nuclear strong force under extreme temperature and densities. Experimentally these conditions are achieved via high-energy collisions of heavy ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the past decade, a unique and substantial suite of data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleon scale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks and gluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023 nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progress in hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well as highlight the realization of previous recommendations, and present opportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments and investments made in theoretical developments and the construction of new detectors. Furthermore, this document provides additional context to support the recommendations voted on at the Joint Hot and Cold QCD Town Hall Meeting, which are reported in a separate document., 190 pages, 69 figures

The massive galaxy cluster El Gordo (z=0.87) imprints multitudes of gravitationally lensed arcs onto James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) images. Eight bands of NIRCam imaging were obtained in the ``Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science'' (``PEARLS'') program. PSF-matched photometry across Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and NIRCam filters supplies new photometric redshifts. A new light-traces-mass lens model based on 56 image multiplicities identifies the two mass peaks and yields a mass estimate within 500 kpc of ~(7.0 +/- 0.30) x 10^14 Msun. A search for substructure in the 140 cluster members with spectroscopic redshifts confirms the two main mass components. The southeastern mass peak that contains the BCG is more tightly bound than the northwestern one. The virial mass within 1.7 Mpc is (5.1 +/- 0.60) x 10^14 Msun, lower than the lensing mass. A significant transverse velocity component could mean the virial mass is underestimated. We contribute one new member to the previously known z=4.32 galaxy group. Intrinsic (delensed) positions of the five secure group members span a physical extent of ~60 kpc. Thirteen additional candidates selected by spectroscopic/photometric constraints are small and faint with a mean intrinsic luminosity ~2.2 mag fainter than L*. NIRCam imaging admits a fairly wide range of brightnesses and morphologies for the group members, suggesting a more diverse galaxy population in this galaxy overdensity., 24 pages, accepted by ApJ

A fair assignment of credit for multi-authored publications is a long-standing issue in scientometrics. In the calculation of the $h$-index, for instance, all co-authors receive equal credit for a given publication, independent of a given author's contribution to the work or of the total number of co-authors. Several attempts have been made to distribute the credit in a more appropriate manner. In a recent paper, Hirsch has suggested a new way of credit assignment that is fundamentally different from the previous ones: All credit for a multi-author paper goes to a single author, the called ``$\alpha$-author'', defined as the person with the highest current $h$-index not the highest $h$-index at the time of the paper's publication) (J. E. Hirsch, Scientometrics 118, 673 (2019)). The collection of papers this author has received credit for as $\alpha$-author is then used to calculate a new index, $h_{\alpha}$, following the same recipe as for the usual $h$ index. The objective of this new assignment is not a fairer distribution of credit, but rather the determination of an altogether different property, the degree of a person's scientific leadership. We show that given the complex time dependence of $h$ for individual scientists, the approach of using the current $h$ value instead of the historic one is problematic, and we argue that it would be feasible to determine the $\alpha$-author at the time of the paper's publication instead. On the other hand, there are other practical considerations that make the calculation of the proposed $h_{\alpha}$ very difficult. Materials for electronics that function as electrical and/or thermal conductors are often rigid, expensive, difficult to be sourced and sometimes toxic. An electrically and thermally conductive nanocomposite that is lightweight, flexible and eco-friendly could improve the environmental friendliness of the electronics sector and enable new applications. Considering this, we have fabricated electrically and thermally conductive flexible materials by functionalizing paper with nanocarbon conductive inks. Carnauba wax is emulsified in isopropyl alcohol and mixed with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) or with hybrids of GNPs and carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The percolation threshold of the hybrid samples is lowered compared with the pure GNPs composites, due to their increased filler aspect ratio. The hybrid samples also exhibit superior bending and folding stability. Densification of the coating to decrease their sheet resistance enables them to achieve as low as ~ 50 {\Omega} sq-1 for the GNP-based paper. The densification procedure improves the bending stability, the abrasion resistance, and the electromagnetic interference shielding of the paper-based conductors. Finally, the compressed samples show an impressive enhancement of their thermal diffusivity. The flexible and multifunctional nanocarbon coated paper is a promising electronic conductor and thermally dissipative material and, at the same time, can increase the environmental sustainability of the electronics sector., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures

Paper based thermoresistive sensors are fabricated by rubbing WS2 powder against a piece of standard copier paper, like the way a pencil is used to write on paper. The abrasion between the layered material and the rough paper surface erodes the material, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds, yielding a film of interconnected platelets. The resistance of WS2 presents a strong temperature dependence, as expected for a semiconductor material in which charge transport is due to thermally activated carriers. This strong temperature dependence makes the paper supported WS2 devices extremely sensitive to small changes in temperature. This exquisite thermal sensitivity, and their fast response times to sudden temperature changes, is exploited thereby demonstrating the usability of a WS2-on-paper thermal sensor in a respiration monitoring device., 6 main text figures, 1 table, 6 supp. info. figures

Earlier works in literature on the hygro-expansion of paper state that the larger hygro-expansivity of freely compared to restrained dried handsheets is due to structural differences between the fibers inside the handsheet. To unravel this hypothesis, first, the hygro-expansion of freely and restrained dried, hardwood and softwood handsheets has been characterized. Subsequently, the transient full-field hygro-expansion (longitudinal, transverse, and shear strain) of fibers extracted from these handsheets was measured using global digital height correlation, from which the micro-fibril angle was deduced. The hygro-expansivity of each individual fiber was tested before and after a wetting period, during which the fiber's moisture content is maximized, to analyze if a restrained dried fiber can "transform" into a freely dried fiber. It was found that the longitudinal hygro-expansion of the freely dried fibers is significantly larger than the restrained dried fibers, consistent with the sheet-scale differences. The difference in micro-fibril angle between the freely and restrained dried fibers is a possible explanation for this difference, but merely for the hardwood fibers, which are able to "transform" to freely dried fibers after being soaked in water. In contrast, this "transformation" does not happen in softwood fibers, even after full immersion in water for a day. Various mechanisms have been studied to explain the observations on freely and restrained dried hardwood and softwood, fiber and handsheets including analysis of the fibers' lumen and cross-sectional shape. We motivate the cosmological science case of measuring Type Ia supernovae with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as part of the High Latitude Time Domain Survey. We discuss previously stated requirements for the science, and a baseline survey strategy. We discuss the various areas that must still be optimized and point to the other white papers that consider these topics in detail. Overall, the baseline case should enable an exquisite measurement of dark energy using SNe Ia from z=0.1 to z>2, and further optimization should only strengthen this once-in-a-generation experiment.

Type-I Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe) are an exotic class of core-collapse SN (CCSN) that can be up to 100 times brighter and more slowly-evolving than normal CCSNe. SLSNe represent the end-stages of the most massive stripped stars, and are thought to be powered by the spin-down energy of a millisecond magnetar. Studying them and measuring their physical parameters can help us to better understand stellar mass-loss, evolution, and explosions. Moreover, thanks to their high luminosities, SLSNe can be seen up to greater distances, allowing us to explore how stellar physics evolves as a function of redshift. The High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS) will provide us with an exquisite dataset that will discover 100s of SLSNe. Here, we focus on the question of which sets of filters and cadences will allow us to best characterize the physical parameters of these SLSNe. We simulate a set of SLSNe at redshifts ranging from z = 0.1 to z = 5.0, using six different sets of filters, and cadences ranging from 5 to 100 days. We then fit these simulated light curves to attempt to recover the input parameter values for their ejecta mass, ejecta velocity, magnetic field strength, and magnetar spin period. We find that four filters are sufficient to accurately characterize SLSNe at redshifts below $z = 3$, and that cadences faster than 20 days are required to obtain measurements with an uncertainty below 10\%, although a cadence of 70 days is still acceptable under certain conditions. Finally, we find that the nominal survey strategy will not be able to properly characterize the most distant SLSNe at $z = 5$. Quasi-brittle materials endowed with (statistically) self-similar hierarcical microstructures show distinct failure patterns that deviate from the standard scenario of damage accumulation followed by crack nucleation-and-growth. Here we study the failure of paper sheets with hierarchical slice patterns as well as non-hierarchical and unpatterned reference samples, considering both uncracked samples and samples containing a macroscopic crack. Failure is studied under displacement-controlled tensile loading as well as under creep conditions. Acoustic emission records and surface strain patterns are recorded alongside stress-strain and creep curves. The measurements demonstrate that hierarchical patterning efficiently mitigates against strain localization and crack propagation. In tensile loading, this results in a significantly increased residual strength of cracked samples. Under creep conditions, for a given range of lifetimes hierarchically patterned samples are found to sustain larger creep strains at higher stress levels; their creep curves show unusual behavior characterized by multiple creep rate minima due to the repeated arrest of emergent localization bands.

Pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) are explosions of very massive stars that may have played a critical role in the chemical evolution and reionization of the early Universe. In order to quantify their roles, it is required to know the PISN event rate at z > 6. Although Roman Space Telescope has a capability to discover PISNe at z > 6, identifying rare high-redshift PISN candidates among many other transients is challenging. In order to efficiently identify PISN candidates at z > 6, we propose to add sparse F213 observations reaching 26.5 mag (or deeper) every half year in the High Latitude Time Domain Survey. Recent work has shown that pairwise interactions may not be sufficient to fully model ecological dynamics in the wild. In this letter, we consider a replicator dynamic that takes both pairwise and triadic interactions into consideration using a rank-three tensor. We study {these} new nonlinear dynamics using a generalized rock-paper-scissors game whose dynamics are well understood in the {standard} replicator sense. We show that the addition of higher-order dynamics leads to the creation of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation and consequently an unstable limit cycle. It is known that this kind of behaviour cannot occur in the pairwise replicator in any three strategy games, showing the effect higher-order interactions can have on the resulting dynamics of the system. Although there are estimated to be 100 million isolated black holes (BHs) in the Milky Way, only one has been found so far, resulting in significant uncertainty about their properties. The Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey provides the only opportunity in the coming decades to grow this catalog by order(s) of magnitude. This can be achieved if 1) Roman's astrometric potential is fully realized in the observation strategy and software pipelines, 2) Roman's observational gaps of the Bulge are minimized, and 3) observations with ground-based facilities are taken of the Bulge to fill in gaps during non-Bulge seasons. A large sample of isolated BHs will enable a broad range of astrophysical questions to be answered, such as massive stellar evolution, origin of gravitational wave sources, supernova physics, and the growth of supermassive BHs, maximizing Roman's scientific return., Comment: 20 pages. We derive a corrected analytical solution for the propagation and enhanced phase mixing of torsional Alfv\'en waves, in a potential magnetic field with exponentially divergent field lines, embedded in a stratified solar corona. Further we develop a code named TAWAS which calculates the analytic solution describing torsional Alfv\'en waves using IDL software language. We then use TAWAS to demonstrate that both our correction to the analytic solution and the inclusion of wave reflection have a significant impact on Alfv\'en wave damping. We continue to utilise TAWAS by performing a parameter study in order to identify the conditions under which enhanced phase mixing is strongest. We find that phase mixing is the strongest for high frequency Alfv\'en waves in magnetic fields with highly divergent field lines and without density stratification. We then present a finite difference solver, Wigglewave, which solves the linearised evolution equations for the system directly. Comparing solutions from TAWAS and Wigglewave we see that our analytical solution is accurate within the limits of the WKB approximation but under-reports the wave damping, caused by enhanced phase mixing, beyond the WKB limit. Both TAWAS and Wigglewave solve the linearised governing equations and not the complete nonlinear MHD equations.
