Higher degree forms are homogeneous polynomials of degree $d > 2,$ or equivalently symmetric $d$-linear spaces. This paper is mainly concerned about the algebraic structure of the centers of higher degree forms with applications specifically to direct sum decompositions, namely expressing higher degree forms as sums of forms in disjoint sets of variables. We show that the center algebra of almost every form is the ground field, consequently almost all higher degree forms are absolutely indecomposable. If a higher degree form is decomposable, then we provide simple criteria and algorithms for direct sum decompositions by its center algebra. It is shown that the direct sum decomposition problem can be boiled down to some standard tasks of linear algebra, in particular the computations of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We also apply the structure results of center algebras to provide a complete answer to the classical problem of whether a higher degree form can be reconstructed from its Jacobian ideal., 12 pages. A submodule $W$ of $V$ is summand absorbing, if $x + y \in W$ implies $x \in W, \; y \in W $ for any $x, y \in V$. Such submodules often appear in modules over (additively) idempotent semirings, particularly in tropical algebra. Given a bicovariant differential calculus $(\mathcal{E}, d)$ such that the braiding map is diagonalisable in a certain sense, the bimodule of two-tensors admits a direct sum decomposition into symmetric and anti-symmetric tensors. This is used to prove the existence of a bicovariant torsionless connection on $\mathcal{E}$. Following Heckenberger and Schm{\"u}dgen, we study invariant metrics and the compatibility of covariant connections with such metrics. A sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of bicovariant Levi-Civita connections is derived. We study similarity classes of commuting row contractions annihilated by what we call higher order vanishing ideals of interpolating sequences. Our main result exhibits a Jordan-type direct sum decomposition for these row contractions. We illustrate how the family of ideals to which our theorem applies is very rich, especially in several variables. We also give two applications of the main result. First, we obtain a purely operator theoretic characterization of interpolating sequences. Second, we classify certain classes of cyclic commuting row contractions up to quasi-similarity in terms of their annihilating ideals. This refines some of our recent work on the topic. We show how this classification is sharp: in general quasi-similarity cannot be improved to similarity. The obstruction to doing so is the existence, or lack thereof, of norm-controlled similarities between commuting tuples of nilpotent matrices, and we investigate this question in detail., 47 pages

In this paper a full description of order isomorphisms between effect algebras of atomic JBW-algebras is given. We will derive a closed formula for the order isomorphisms on the effect algebra of type I factors by proving that the invertible part of the effect algebra of a type I factor is left invariant. This yields an order isomorphism on the whole cone, for which a characterisation exists. Furthermore, we will show that the obtained formula for the order isomorphism on the invertible part can be extended to the whole effect algebra again. As atomic JBW-algebras are direct sums of type I factors and order isomorphisms factor through the direct sum decomposition, this yields the desired description., Comment: 17 pages

An [Formula: see text]-module [Formula: see text] over a semiring [Formula: see text] lacks zero sums (LZS) if [Formula: see text] implies [Formula: see text]. More generally, a submodule [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] is “summand absorbing” (SA), if, for all [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] These relate to tropical algebra and modules over (additively) idempotent semirings, as well as modules over semirings of sums of squares. In previous work, we have explored the lattice of SA submodules of a given LZS module, especially, those that are finitely generated, in terms of the lattice-theoretic Krull dimension. In this paper, we consider which submodules are SA and describe their explicit generation.

We study evolution algebras of arbitrary dimension. We analyze in deep the notions of evolution subalgebras, ideals and non-degeneracy and describe the ideals generated by one element and characterize the simple evolution algebras. We also prove the existence and unicity of a direct sum decomposition into irreducible components for every non-degenerate evolution algebra. When the algebra is degenerate, the uniqueness cannot be assured. The graph associated to an evolution algebra (relative to a natural basis) will play a fundamental role to describe the structure of the algebra. Concretely, a non-degenerate evolution algebra is irreducible if and only if the graph is connected. Moreover, when the evolution algebra is finite-dimensional, we give a process (called the fragmentation process) to decompose the algebra into irreducible components., To appear in Linear Algebra and its Applications (2016)

We obtain nontrivial solutions for two types of critical $p$-Laplacian problems with asymmetric nonlinearities in a smooth bounded domain in ${\mathbb R}^N,\, N \ge 2$. For $p < N$, we consider an asymmetric problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent $p^\ast = Np/(N - p)$. In the borderline case $p = N$, we consider an asymmetric critical exponential nonlinearity of the Trudinger-Moser type. We obtain nontrivial solutions to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator, extending some results in the literature for the fractional Laplacian. The quasilinear case presents two serious new difficulties. First an explicit formula for a minimizer in the fractional Sobolev inequality is not available when $p \ne 2$. We get around this difficulty by working with certain asymptotic estimates for minimizers recently obtained by Brasco, Mosconi and Squassina. The second difficulty is the lack of a direct sum decomposition suitable for applying the classical linking theorem. We use an abstract linking theorem based on the cohomological index proved by Perera and Yang to overcome this difficulty., Comment: 24 pages

We consider a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph $\Gamma$ with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \geq 3$. For $\mu, \nu \in \lbrace \downarrow, \uparrow \rbrace$ we define a direct sum decomposition of the standard module $V=\C X$, called the $(\mu,\nu)$--split decomposition. For this decomposition we compute the complex conjugate and transpose of the associated primitive idempotents. Now fix $b,\beta \in \mathbb C$ such that $b \neq 1$ and assume $\Gamma$ has classical parameters $(D,b,\alpha,\beta)$ with $\alpha = b-1$. Under this assumption Ito and Terwilliger displayed an action of the $q$-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$ on the standard module of $\Gamma$. To describe this action they defined eight matrices in $\hbox{Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$, called \begin{eqnarray*} \label{eq:list} A,\quad A^*,\quad B,\quad B^*, \quad K,\quad K^*,\quad \Phi,\quad \Psi. \end{eqnarray*} For each matrix in the above list we compute the transpose and complex conjugate. Using this information we compute the transpose and complex conjugate for each generator of $\boxtimes_q$ on $V$.

A direct sum decomposition theory is developed for direct summands (and complements) of modules over a semiring $R$, having the property that $v+w = 0$ implies $v = 0$ and $w = 0$. Although this never occurs when $R$ is a ring, it always does holds for free modules over the max-plus semiring and related semirings. In such situations, the direct complement is unique, and the decomposition is unique up to refinement. Thus, every finitely generated projective module is a finite direct sum of summands of $R$ (assuming the mild assumption that $1$ is a finite sum of orthogonal primitive idempotents of $R$). Some of the results are presented more generally for weak complements and semidirect complements. We conclude by examining the obstruction to the "upper bound" property in this context.

We give two equivalent sets of invariants which classify pairs of coisotropic subspaces of finite-dimensional Poisson vector spaces. For this it is convenient to dualize; we work with pairs of isotropic subspaces of presymplectic vector spaces. We obtain nontrivial solutions of a critical fractional $p$-Laplacian equation in the whole space and with possibly vanishing potentials. In addition to the usual difficulty of the lack of compactness associated with problems involving critical Sobolev exponents, the problem is further complicated by the absence of a direct sum decomposition suitable for applying classical linking arguments. Categories over a field $k$ can be graded by different groups in a connected way; we consider morphisms between these gradings in order to define the fundamental grading group. We prove that this group is isomorphic to the fundamental group \`a la Grothendieck as considered in previous papers. In case the $k$-category is Schurian generated we prove that a universal grading exists. We study the structure of the symplectic invariant part $\mathfrak{h}_{g,1}^{\mathrm{Sp}}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}_{g,1}$ consisting of symplectic derivations of the free Lie algebra generated by the rational homology group of a closed oriented surface $\Sigma_{g}$ of genus $g$. First we describe the orthogonal direct sum decomposition of this space which is induced by the canonical metric on it and compute it explicitly up to degree $20$. In this framework, we give a general constraint which is imposed on the $\mathrm{Sp}$-invariant component of the bracket of two elements in $\mathfrak{h}_{g,1}$. Second we clarify the relations among $\mathfrak{h}_{g,1}$ and the other two related Lie algebras $\mathfrak{h}_{g,*}$ and $\mathfrak{h}_{g}$ which correspond to the cases of a closed surface $\Sigma_g$ with and without base point $*\in\Sigma_g$. In particular, based on a theorem of Labute, we formulate a method of determining these differences and describe them explicitly up to degree $20$. Third, by giving a general method of constructing elements of $\mathfrak{h}_{g,1}^{\mathrm{Sp}}$, we reveal a considerable difference between the two submodules of it, one is the $\mathrm{Sp}$-invariant part of a certain ideal $\mathfrak{j}_{g,1}$ and the other is that of the Johnson image. Finally we combine these results to determine the structure of $\mathfrak{h}_{g,1}$ completely up to degree $6$ including the unstable cases where the genus $1$ case has an independent meaning. By a new orthogonal direct sum decomposition $E_{M} = Y \oplus Z$, which $Z$ is related to $\Delta u_i(i=1,2,3,....,M)$, and a new functional $I(u)$, the method in [2] is improved to obtain new multiple periodic solutions with negativity hypothesis on $F$ for a second-order discrete Hamiltonian system. Moreover, we exhibit an instructive example to make our result more clear, which hasn't been solved by the known results.

If a complex analytic function, $f$, has a stratified isolated critical point, then it is known that the cohomology of the Milnor fibre of $f$ has a direct sum decomposition in terms of the normal Morse data to the strata. We use microlocal Morse theory to obtain the same result under the weakened hypothesis that the vanishing cycles along $f$ have isolated support. We consider a functional analytic variant of the notion of Tate space, namely the category of those topological vector spaces which have a direct sum decomposition where one summand is nuclear Frechet space and the other is the dual of a nuclear Frechet. We show that, both in the complex and in the p-adic setting, one can use this formalism to define symbols for analytic functions which satisfy Weil-type reciprocity laws.

Bergman complexes are polyhedral complexes associated to matroids. Faces of these complexes are certain matroids, called matroid types, too. In order to understand the structure of these faces we decompose matroid types into direct summands. Ardila/Klivans proved that the Bergman Complex of a matroid can be subdivided into the order complex of the proper part of its lattice of flats. Beyond that Feichtner/Sturmfels showed that the Bergman complex can even be subdivided to the even coarser nested set complex. We will give a much shorter and more general proof of this fact. Generalizing formulas proposed by Ardila/Klivans and Feichtner/Sturmfels for special cases, we present a decomposition into direct sums working for faces of any of these complexes. Additionally we show that it is the finest possible decomposition for faces of the Bergman complex., Les complexes de Bergmann sont des complexes polyhedrales affectès à des matroides. Les faces de ces complexes sont des matroides pour leur part, on les appelle types de matroides. Pour pouvoir comprendre ces types de matroides nous les divisons en sommes directes. Ardila et Klivans ont prouvè que le complexe de Bergman dun matroide peut être subdivisè en le complexe dordre du propre treillis des flats. Au surplus, Feichtner/Sturmfels ont pu montrer que le complexe de Bergmann peut même être subdivisè en le nested set complexe qui est encore plus grossier. Nous y prèsenterons une preuve plus courte et plus gènèrale. Nous gènèraliserons des formules qui ont dèjà ètè rèdigèes pour des cas spèciaux par Ardila/Klivans. Ainsi, nous rèvèlerons une division des types de matroides en sommes directes qui est valable tous les complexes èvoquès. De plus, nous montrerons que cette division est la division la plus fine pour les faces du complexe de Bergmann.

In this paper we introduce the Fourier-Mukai transform for Lawson homology of abelian varieties and prove an inversion theorem for the Lawson homology as well as the morphic cohomology of abelian varieties. As applications, we obtain the direct sum decomposition of the Lawson homology and the morphic cohomology groups with rational coefficients, inspired by Beauville's works on the Chow theory. An analogue of the Beauville conjecture for Chow groups is proposed and is shown to be equivalent to the (weak) Suslin conjecture for Lawson homology. A filtration on Lawson homology is proposed and conjecturally it coincides to the filtration given by the direct sum decomposition of Lawson homology for abelian varieties. Moreover, a refined Friedlander-Lawson duality theorem is obtained for abelian varieties. We summarize several related conjectures in Lawson homology theory in the appendix for convenience., Comment: 24 pages

Let G be an adjoint simple algebraic group of inner type. We express the Chow motive (with integral coefficients) of some anisotropic projective G-homogeneous varieties in terms of motives of simpler G-homogeneous varieties, namely, those that correspond to maximal parabolic subgroups of G. We decompose the motive of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety SB_2(A), where A is a division algebra of degree 5, into a direct sum of two indecomposable motives. As an application we provide another counter-example to the uniqueness of a direct sum decomposition in the category of motives with integral coefficients., Comment: 28 pages
