Search

Many recent approaches of passage retrieval are using dense embeddings generated from deep neural models, called "dense passage retrieval". The state-of-the-art end-to-end dense passage retrieval systems normally deploy a deep neural model followed by an approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search module. The model generates embeddings of the corpus and queries, which are then indexed and searched by the high-performance ANN module. With the increasing data scale, the ANN module unavoidably becomes the bottleneck on efficiency. An alternative is the learned index, which achieves significantly high search efficiency by learning the data distribution and predicting the target data location. But most of the existing learned indexes are designed for low dimensional data, which are not suitable for dense passage retrieval with high-dimensional dense embeddings. In this paper, we propose LIDER, an efficient high-dimensional Learned Index for large-scale DEnse passage Retrieval. LIDER has a clustering-based hierarchical architecture formed by two layers of core models. As the basic unit of LIDER to index and search data, a core model includes an adapted recursive model index (RMI) and a dimension reduction component which consists of an extended SortingKeys-LSH (SK-LSH) and a key re-scaling module. The dimension reduction component reduces the high-dimensional dense embeddings into one-dimensional keys and sorts them in a specific order, which are then used by the RMI to make fast prediction. Experiments show that LIDER has a higher search speed with high retrieval quality comparing to the state-of-the-art ANN indexes on passage retrieval tasks, e.g., on large-scale data it achieves 1.2x search speed and significantly higher retrieval quality than the fastest baseline in our evaluation. We propose a new structure-from-motion framework to recover accurate camera poses and point clouds from unordered images. Traditional SfM systems typically rely on the successful detection of repeatable keypoints across multiple views as the first step, which is difficult for texture-poor scenes, and poor keypoint detection may break down the whole SfM system. We propose a new detector-free SfM framework to draw benefits from the recent success of detector-free matchers to avoid the early determination of keypoints, while solving the multi-view inconsistency issue of detector-free matchers. Specifically, our framework first reconstructs a coarse SfM model from quantized detector-free matches. Then, it refines the model by a novel iterative refinement pipeline, which iterates between an attention-based multi-view matching module to refine feature tracks and a geometry refinement module to improve the reconstruction accuracy. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms existing detector-based SfM systems on common benchmark datasets. We also collect a texture-poor SfM dataset to demonstrate the capability of our framework to reconstruct texture-poor scenes. Concentric Tube Robots (CTR) have the potential to enable effective minimally invasive surgeries. While extensive modeling and control schemes have been proposed in the past decade, limited efforts have been made to improve the trajectory tracking performance from the perspective of manipulability , which can be critical to generate safe motion and feasible actuator commands. In this paper, we propose a gradient-based redundancy resolution framework that optimizes velocity/compliance manipulability-based performance indices during trajectory tracking for a kinematically redundant CTR. We efficiently calculate the gradients of manipulabilities by propagating the first- and second-order derivatives of state variables of the Cosserat rod model along the CTR arc length, reducing the gradient computation time by 68\% compared to finite difference method. Task-specific performance indices are optimized by projecting the gradient into the null-space of trajectory tracking. The proposed method is validated in three exemplary scenarios that involve trajectory tracking, obstacle avoidance, and external load compensation, respectively. Unsupervised learning of 3D human faces from unstructured 2D image data is an active research area. While recent works have achieved an impressive level of photorealism, they commonly lack control of lighting, which prevents the generated assets from being deployed in novel environments. To this end, we introduce LumiGAN, an unconditional Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for 3D human faces with a physically based lighting module that enables relighting under novel illumination at inference time. Unlike prior work, LumiGAN can create realistic shadow effects using an efficient visibility formulation that is learned in a self-supervised manner. LumiGAN generates plausible physical properties for relightable faces, including surface normals, diffuse albedo, and specular tint without any ground truth data. Advancements in unsupervised machine translation have enabled the development of machine translation systems that can translate between languages for which there is not an abundance of parallel data available. We explored unsupervised machine translation between Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. Despite the vast number of native speakers of Cantonese, there is still no large-scale corpus for the language, due to the fact that Cantonese is primarily used for oral communication. The key contributions of our project include: 1. The creation of a new corpus containing approximately 1 million Cantonese sentences, and 2. A large-scale comparison across different model architectures, tokenization schemes, and embedding structures. Our best model trained with character-based tokenization and a Transformer architecture achieved a character-level BLEU of 25.1 when translating from Mandarin to Cantonese and of 24.4 when translating from Cantonese to Mandarin. This study is devoted to the automatic generation of German drama texts. We suggest an approach consisting of two key steps: fine-tuning a GPT-2 model (the outline model) to generate outlines of scenes based on keywords and fine-tuning a second model (the generation model) to generate scenes from the scene outline. The input for the neural model comprises two datasets: the German Drama Corpus (GerDraCor) and German Text Archive (Deutsches Textarchiv or DTA). In order to estimate the effectiveness of the proposed method, our models are compared with baseline GPT-2 models. Our models perform well according to automatic quantitative evaluation, but, conversely, manual qualitative analysis reveals a poor quality of generated texts. This may be due to the quality of the dataset or training inputs.

For text summarization, the role of discourse structure is pivotal in discerning the core content of a text. Regrettably, prior studies on incorporating Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) into transformer-based summarization models only consider the nuclearity annotation, thereby overlooking the variety of discourse relation types. This paper introduces the 'RSTformer', a novel summarization model that comprehensively incorporates both the types and uncertainty of rhetorical relations. Our RST-attention mechanism, rooted in document-level rhetorical structure, is an extension of the recently devised Longformer framework. Density-based clustering is a commonly used tool in data science. Today many data science works are utilizing high-dimensional neural embeddings. However, traditional density-based clustering techniques like DBSCAN have a degraded performance on high-dimensional data. In this paper, we propose LAF, a generic learned accelerator framework to speed up the original DBSCAN and the sampling-based variants of DBSCAN on high-dimensional data with angular distance metric. This framework consists of a learned cardinality estimator and a post-processing module. The cardinality estimator can fast predict whether a data point is core or not to skip unnecessary range queries, while the post-processing module detects the false negative predictions and merges the falsely separated clusters. A popular approach for constructing bird's-eye-view (BEV) representation in 3D detection is to lift 2D image features onto the viewing frustum space based on explicitly predicted depth distribution. However, depth distribution can only characterize the 3D geometry of visible object surfaces but fails to capture their internal space and overall geometric structure, leading to sparse and unsatisfactory 3D representations. To mitigate this issue, we present BEV-IO, a new 3D detection paradigm to enhance BEV representation with instance occupancy information. At the core of our method is the newly-designed instance occupancy prediction (IOP) module, which aims to infer point-level occupancy status for each instance in the frustum space. To ensure training efficiency while maintaining representational flexibility, it is trained using the combination of both explicit and implicit supervision. With the predicted occupancy, we further design a geometry-aware feature propagation mechanism (GFP), which performs self-attention based on occupancy distribution along each ray in frustum and is able to enforce instance-level feature consistency. By integrating the IOP module with GFP mechanism, our BEV-IO detector is able to render highly informative 3D scene structures with more comprehensive BEV representations. Experimental results demonstrate that BEV-IO can outperform state-of-the-art methods while only adding a negligible increase in parameters (0.2%) and computational overhead (0.24%in GFLOPs).

Numerous diseases and aging can cause degeneration of people's balance ability resulting in limited mobility and even high risks of fall. Robotic technologies can provide more intensive rehabilitation exercises or be used as assistive devices to compensate for balance ability. However, With the new healthcare paradigm shifting from hospital care to home care, there is a gap in robotic systems that can provide care at home. This paper introduces Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA), a compact and cost-effective balance assistive robot that can provide both rehabilitation training and activities of daily living (ADLs) assistance at home. A three degrees of freedom (3-DoF) robotic arm was designed to mimic the therapist arm function to provide balance assistance to the user. To minimize the interference to users' natural pelvis movements and gait patterns, the robot must have a Human-Robot Interface(HRI) that can detect user intention accurately and follow the user's movement smoothly and timely. Thus, a graceful user following control rule was proposed. The overall control architecture consists of two parts: an observer for human inputs estimation and an LQR-based controller with disturbance rejection. The proposed controller is validated in high-fidelity simulation with actual human trajectories, and the results successfully show the effectiveness of the method in different walking modes.

Recently, Transformer-based methods for point cloud learning have achieved good results on various point cloud learning benchmarks. However, since the attention mechanism needs to generate three feature vectors of query, key, and value to calculate attention features, most of the existing Transformer-based point cloud learning methods usually consume a large amount of computational time and memory resources when calculating global attention. To address this problem, we propose a Voxel-Transformer-Point (VTP) Block for extracting local and global features of point clouds. VTP combines the advantages of voxel-based, point-based and Transformer-based methods, which consists of Voxel-Based Branch (V branch), Point-Based Transformer Branch (PT branch) and Point-Based Branch (P branch). The V branch extracts the coarse-grained features of the point cloud through low voxel resolution; the PT branch obtains the fine-grained features of the point cloud by calculating the self-attention in the local neighborhood and the inter-neighborhood cross-attention; the P branch uses a simplified MLP network to generate the global location information of the point cloud. In addition, to enrich the local features of point clouds at different scales, we set the voxel scale in the V branch and the neighborhood sphere scale in the PT branch to one large and one small (large voxel scale \& small neighborhood sphere scale or small voxel scale \& large neighborhood sphere scale). Finally, we use VTP as the feature extraction network to construct a VTPNet for point cloud learning, and performs shape classification, part segmentation, and semantic segmentation tasks on the ModelNet40, ShapeNet Part, and S3DIS datasets. The experimental results indicate that VTPNet has good performance in 3D point cloud learning.

The application of data visualization in public art attracts increasing attention. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a visualization method for sunlight data collected over a long period of time. The proposed method makes use of the Saturation and Value information of collected sunlight data in Hue Saturation Value color space to show the variation of the mood of the sunlight. Specifically, we create visual patterns with two rotating gears, which has an intuitively consistent geometric meaning with HSV color space and the planetary motion. Due to the variation of the sunlight data over time, the generated visual patter presents a periodic variation that corresponds to the changing mood of the sunlight. Furthermore, we also use the sunlight data to generate music as another form of data representation. Two public art works have been created with the above visualization and auralization methods and displayed on an exhibition.

Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation, which benefits from the proliferation of GPS-enabled devices and location-based social networks (LBSNs), plays an increasingly important role in recommender systems. It aims to provide users with the convenience to discover their interested places to visit based on previous visits and current status. Most existing methods usually merely leverage recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to explore sequential influences for recommendation. Despite the effectiveness, these methods not only neglect topological geographical influences among POIs, but also fail to model high-order sequential substructures. To tackle the above issues, we propose a Kernel-Based Graph Neural Network (KBGNN) for next POI recommendation, which combines the characteristics of both geographical and sequential influences in a collaborative way. KBGNN consists of a geographical module and a sequential module. On the one hand, we construct a geographical graph and leverage a message passing neural network to capture the topological geographical influences. On the other hand, we explore high-order sequential substructures in the user-aware sequential graph using a graph kernel neural network to capture user preferences. Finally, a consistency learning framework is introduced to jointly incorporate geographical and sequential information extracted from two separate graphs. In this way, the two modules effectively exchange knowledge to mutually enhance each other. Extensive experiments conducted on two real-world LBSN datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method over the state-of-the-arts. Conventional autoregressive left-to-right (L2R) sequence generation faces two issues during decoding: limited to unidirectional target sequence modeling, and constrained on strong local dependencies. To address the aforementioned problem, we propose P$^3$LM, a probabilistically permuted prophet language model, which strengthens the modeling of bidirectional information and long token dependencies for sequence generation. Specifically, P$^3$LM learns to generate tokens in permuted order upon an order-aware transformer decoder, as well as to generate the corresponding future $N$ tokens with a multi-stream attention mechanism. Extensive experiments are conducted on the GLGE benchmark, which includes four datasets for summarization, two for question generation, one for conversational question answering, and one for dialog response generation, where P$^3$LM achieves state-of-the-art results compared with strong publicly available generative pre-training methods., Accepted to EMNLP(Findings) 2022

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are composed of spatially distributed sensors and are considered vulnerable to attacks by worms and their variants. Due to the distinct strategies of worms propagation, the dynamic behavior varies depending on the different features of the sensors. Modeling the spread of worms can help us understand the worm attack behaviors and analyze the propagation procedure. In this paper, we design a communication model under various worms. We aim to learn our proposed model to analytically derive the dynamics of competitive worms propagation. We develop a new searching space combined with complex neural network models. Federated Learning (FL) is a novel framework of decentralized machine learning. Due to the decentralized feature of FL, it is vulnerable to adversarial attacks in the training procedure, e.g. , backdoor attacks. A backdoor attack aims to inject a backdoor into the machine learning model such that the model will make arbitrarily incorrect behavior on the test sample with some specific backdoor trigger. Even though a range of backdoor attack methods of FL has been introduced, there are also methods defending against them. Many of the defending methods utilize the abnormal characteristics of the models with backdoor or the difference between the models with backdoor and the regular models. To bypass these defenses, we need to reduce the difference and the abnormal characteristics. We find a source of such abnormality is that backdoor attack would directly flip the label of data when poisoning the data. However, current studies of the backdoor attack in FL are not mainly focus on reducing the difference between the models with backdoor and the regular models. In this paper, we propose Adversarial Knowledge Distillation(ADVKD), a method combine knowledge distillation with backdoor attack in FL. With knowledge distillation, we can reduce the abnormal characteristics in model result from the label flipping, thus the model can bypass the defenses. Compared to current methods, we show that ADVKD can not only reach a higher attack success rate, but also successfully bypass the defenses when other methods fails. To further explore the performance of ADVKD, we test how the parameters affect the performance of ADVKD under different scenarios. According to the experiment result, we summarize how to adjust the parameter for better performance under different scenarios. We also use several methods to visualize the effect of different attack and explain the effectiveness of ADVKD.

This paper studies semi-supervised graph classification, a crucial task with a wide range of applications in social network analysis and bioinformatics. Recent works typically adopt graph neural networks to learn graph-level representations for classification, failing to explicitly leverage features derived from graph topology (e.g., paths). Moreover, when labeled data is scarce, these methods are far from satisfactory due to their insufficient topology exploration of unlabeled data. We address the challenge by proposing a novel semi-supervised framework called Twin Graph Neural Network (TGNN). To explore graph structural information from complementary views, our TGNN has a message passing module and a graph kernel module. To fully utilize unlabeled data, for each module, we calculate the similarity of each unlabeled graph to other labeled graphs in the memory bank and our consistency loss encourages consistency between two similarity distributions in different embedding spaces. The two twin modules collaborate with each other by exchanging instance similarity knowledge to fully explore the structure information of both labeled and unlabeled data. Modeling the spread of social contagions is central to various applications in social computing. In this paper, we study the learnability of the competitive threshold model from a theoretical perspective. We demonstrate how competitive threshold models can be seamlessly simulated by artificial neural networks with finite VC dimensions, which enables analytical sample complexity and generalization bounds. Based on the proposed hypothesis space, we design efficient algorithms under the empirical risk minimization scheme. The theoretical insights are finally translated into practical and explainable modeling methods, the effectiveness of which is verified through a sanity check over a few synthetic and real datasets. Machine reading comprehension (MRC) that requires discrete reasoning involving symbolic operations, e.g., addition, sorting, and counting, is a challenging task. According to this nature, semantic parsing-based methods predict interpretable but complex logical forms. However, logical form generation is nontrivial and even a little perturbation in a logical form will lead to wrong answers. To alleviate this issue, multi-predictor -based methods are proposed to directly predict different types of answers and achieve improvements. However, they ignore the utilization of symbolic operations and encounter a lack of reasoning ability and interpretability. To inherit the advantages of these two types of methods, we propose OPERA, an operation-pivoted discrete reasoning framework, where lightweight symbolic operations (compared with logical forms) as neural modules are utilized to facilitate the reasoning ability and interpretability. Specifically, operations are first selected and then softly executed to simulate the answer reasoning procedure. A light stage uses a series of calibrated cameras and lights to capture a subject's facial appearance under varying illumination and viewpoint. This captured information is crucial for facial reconstruction and relighting. Unfortunately, light stages are often inaccessible: they are expensive and require significant technical expertise for construction and operation. In this paper, we present SunStage: a lightweight alternative to a light stage that captures comparable data using only a smartphone camera and the sun. Our method only requires the user to capture a selfie video outdoors, rotating in place, and uses the varying angles between the sun and the face as guidance in joint reconstruction of facial geometry, reflectance, camera pose, and lighting parameters. Despite the in-the-wild un-calibrated setting, our approach is able to reconstruct detailed facial appearance and geometry, enabling compelling effects such as relighting, novel view synthesis, and reflectance editing. Hyperspectral images (HSI) not only have a broad macroscopic field of view but also contain rich spectral information, and the types of surface objects can be identified through spectral information, which is one of the main applications in hyperspectral image related research.In recent years, more and more deep learning methods have been proposed, among which convolutional neural networks (CNN) are the most influential. However, CNN-based methods are difficult to capture long-range dependencies, and also require a large amount of labeled data for model training.Besides, most of the self-supervised training methods in the field of HSI classification are based on the reconstruction of input samples, and it is difficult to achieve effective use of unlabeled samples. To address the shortcomings of CNN networks, we propose a noval multi-scale convolutional embedding module for HSI to realize effective extraction of spatial-spectral information, which can be better combined with Transformer network.In order to make more efficient use of unlabeled data, we propose a new self-supervised pretask. Similar to Mask autoencoder, but our pre-training method only masks the corresponding token of the central pixel in the encoder, and inputs the remaining token into the decoder to reconstruct the spectral information of the central pixel.Such a pretask can better model the relationship between the central feature and the domain feature, and obtain more stable training results., 8 pages, 26 figures, conference paper

Weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) has gained significant popularity since it relies only on weak labels such as image level annotations rather than pixel level annotations required by supervised semantic segmentation (SSS) methods. Despite drastically reduced annotation costs, typical feature representations learned from WSSS are only representative of some salient parts of objects and less reliable compared to SSS due to the weak guidance during training. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Strategy Contrastive Learning (MuSCLe) framework to obtain enhanced feature representations and improve WSSS performance by exploiting similarity and dissimilarity of contrastive sample pairs at image, region, pixel and object boundary levels. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method and show that MuSCLe outperforms the current state-of-the-art on the widely used PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset.

The Prophet Inequality and Pandora's Box problems are fundamental stochastic problem with applications in Mechanism Design, Online Algorithms, Stochastic Optimization, Optimal Stopping, and Operations Research. A usual assumption in these works is that the probability distributions of the $n$ underlying random variables are given as input to the algorithm. Since in practice these distributions need to be learned, we initiate the study of such stochastic problems in the Multi-Armed Bandits model. In the Multi-Armed Bandits model we interact with $n$ unknown distributions over $T$ rounds: in round $t$ we play a policy $x^{(t)}$ and receive a partial (bandit) feedback on the performance of $x^{(t)}$. The goal is to minimize the regret, which is the difference over $T$ rounds in the total value of the optimal algorithm that knows the distributions vs. the total value of our algorithm that learns the distributions from the partial feedback. Our main results give near-optimal $\tilde{O}(\mathsf{poly}(n)\sqrt{T})$ total regret algorithms for both Prophet Inequality and Pandora's Box. Our proofs proceed by maintaining confidence intervals on the unknown indices of the optimal policy. The exploration-exploitation tradeoff prevents us from directly refining these confidence intervals, so the main technique is to design a regret upper bound that is learnable while playing low-regret Bandit policies.

A multi-grid multi-block-size vector quantization (MGBVQ) method is proposed for image coding in this work. The fundamental idea of image coding is to remove correlations among pixels before quantization and entropy coding, e.g., the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and intra predictions, adopted by modern image coding standards. We present a new method to remove pixel correlations. First, by decomposing correlations into long- and short-range correlations, we represent long-range correlations in coarser grids due to their smoothness, thus leading to a multi-grid (MG) coding architecture. Second, we show that short-range correlations can be effectively coded by a suite of vector quantizers (VQs). Along this line, we argue the effectiveness of VQs of very large block sizes and present a convenient way to implement them. It is shown by experimental results that MGBVQ offers excellent rate-distortion (RD) performance, which is comparable with existing image coders, at much lower complexity. Universal domain adaptation (UDA) aims to transfer the knowledge of common classes from the source domain to the target domain without any prior knowledge on the label set, which requires distinguishing in the target domain the unknown samples from the known ones. Recent methods usually focused on categorizing a target sample into one of the source classes rather than distinguishing known and unknown samples, which ignores the inter-sample affinity between known and unknown samples and may lead to suboptimal performance. Aiming at this issue, we propose a novel UDA framework where such inter-sample affinity is exploited. Specifically, we introduce a knowability-based labeling scheme which can be divided into two steps: 1) Knowability-guided detection of known and unknown samples based on the intrinsic structure of the neighborhoods of samples, where we leverage the first singular vectors of the affinity matrices to obtain the knowability of every target sample. 2) Label refinement based on neighborhood consistency to relabel the target samples, where we refine the labels of each target sample based on its neighborhood consistency of predictions. Then, auxiliary losses based on the two steps are used to reduce the inter-sample affinity between the unknown and the known target samples. Finally, experiments on four public datasets demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

The Euclidean Steiner tree problem seeks the min-cost network to connect a collection of target locations, and it underlies many applications of wireless networks. In this paper, we present a study on solving the Euclidean Steiner tree problem using reinforcement learning enhanced by graph representation learning. Different from the commonly studied connectivity problems like travelling salesman problem or vehicle routing problem where the search space is finite, the Euclidean Steiner tree problem requires to search over the entire Euclidean space, thereby making the existing methods not applicable. In this paper, we design discretization methods by leveraging the unique characteristics of the Steiner tree, and propose new training schemes for handling the dynamic Steiner points emerging during the incremental construction. Our design is examined through a sanity check using experiments on a collection of datasets, with encouraging results demonstrating the utility of our method as an alternative to classic combinatorial methods., Comment: EAI WiCON 2022

Controlling styles in neural machine translation (NMT) has attracted wide attention, as it is crucial for enhancing user experience. Earlier studies on this topic typically concentrate on regulating the level of formality and achieve some progress in this area. However, they still encounter two major challenges. The first is the difficulty in style evaluation. The style comprises various aspects such as lexis, syntax, and others that provide abundant information. Nevertheless, only formality has been thoroughly investigated. The second challenge involves excessive dependence on incremental adjustments, particularly when new styles are necessary. To address both challenges, this paper presents a new benchmark and approach. A multiway stylized machine translation (MSMT) benchmark is introduced, incorporating diverse categories of styles across four linguistic domains. Then, we propose a method named style activation prompt (StyleAP) by retrieving prompts from stylized monolingual corpus, which does not require extra fine-tuning. Universal domain adaptation (UniDA) aims to transfer the knowledge from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain without any assumptions of the label sets, which requires distinguishing the unknown samples from the known ones in the target domain. A main challenge of UniDA is that the nonidentical label sets cause the misalignment between the two domains. Moreover, the domain discrepancy and the supervised objectives in the source domain easily lead the whole model to be biased towards the common classes and produce overconfident predictions for unknown samples. To address the above challenging problems, we propose a new uncertainty-guided UniDA framework. Firstly, we introduce an empirical estimation of the probability of a target sample belonging to the unknown class which fully exploits the distribution of the target samples in the latent space. Then, based on the estimation, we propose a novel neighbors searching scheme in a linear subspace with a $\delta$-filter to estimate the uncertainty score of a target sample and discover unknown samples. It fully utilizes the relationship between a target sample and its neighbors in the source domain to avoid the influence of domain misalignment. Secondly, this paper well balances the confidences of predictions for both known and unknown samples through an uncertainty-guided margin loss based on the confidences of discovered unknown samples, which can reduce the gap between the intra-class variances of known classes with respect to the unknown class. Similarity query is the family of queries based on some similarity metrics. Unlike the traditional database queries which are mostly based on value equality, similarity queries aim to find targets "similar enough to" the given data objects, depending on some similarity metric, e.g., Euclidean distance, cosine similarity and so on. To measure the similarity between data objects, traditional methods normally work on low level or syntax features(e.g., basic visual features on images or bag-of-word features of text), which makes them weak to compute the semantic similarities between objects. So for measuring data similarities semantically, neural embedding is applied. Embedding techniques work by representing the raw data objects as vectors (so called "embeddings" or "neural embeddings" since they are mostly generated by neural network models) that expose the hidden semantics of the raw data, based on which embeddings do show outstanding effectiveness on capturing data similarities, making it one of the most widely used and studied techniques in the state-of-the-art similarity query processing research. But there are still many open challenges on the efficiency of embedding based similarity query processing, which are not so well-studied as the effectiveness. In this survey, we first provide an overview of the "similarity query" and "similarity query processing" problems. Then we talk about recent approaches on designing the indexes and operators for highly efficient similarity query processing on top of embeddings (or more generally, high dimensional data). Finally, we investigate the specific solutions with and without using embeddings in selected application domains of similarity queries, including entity resolution and information retrieval. By comparing the solutions, we show how neural embeddings benefit those applications.

Product summarization aims to automatically generate product descriptions, which is of great commercial potential. Considering the customer preferences on different product aspects, it would benefit from generating aspect-oriented customized summaries. However, conventional systems typically focus on providing general product summaries, which may miss the opportunity to match products with customer interests. To address the problem, we propose CUSTOM, aspect-oriented product summarization for e-commerce, which generates diverse and controllable summaries towards different product aspects. To support the study of CUSTOM and further this line of research, we construct two Chinese datasets, i.e., SMARTPHONE and COMPUTER, including 76,279 / 49,280 short summaries for 12,118 / 11,497 real-world commercial products, respectively. Furthermore, we introduce EXT, an extraction-enhanced generation framework for CUSTOM, where two famous sequence-to-sequence models are implemented in this paper. We conduct extensive experiments on the two proposed datasets for CUSTOM and show results of two famous baseline models and EXT, which indicates that EXT can generate diverse, high-quality, and consistent summaries., 12 pages, 4 figures and 6 tables

We present implicit displacement fields, a novel representation for detailed 3D geometry. Inspired by a classic surface deformation technique, displacement mapping, our method represents a complex surface as a smooth base surface plus a displacement along the base's normal directions, resulting in a frequency-based shape decomposition, where the high-frequency signal is constrained geometrically by the low-frequency signal. Importantly, this disentanglement is unsupervised thanks to a tailored architectural design that has an innate frequency hierarchy by construction. Neural implicit functions have emerged as a powerful representation for surfaces in 3D. Such a function can encode a high quality surface with intricate details into the parameters of a deep neural network. However, optimizing for the parameters for accurate and robust reconstructions remains a challenge, especially when the input data is noisy or incomplete. In this work, we develop a hybrid neural surface representation that allows us to impose geometry-aware sampling and regularization, which significantly improves the fidelity of reconstructions. We propose to use \emph{iso-points} as an explicit representation for a neural implicit function. These points are computed and updated on-the-fly during training to capture important geometric features and impose geometric constraints on the optimization. We demonstrate that our method can be adopted to improve state-of-the-art techniques for reconstructing neural implicit surfaces from multi-view images or point clouds. The design of the optimal inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) to compensate the quantization error is proposed for effective lossy image compression in this work. The forward and inverse DCTs are designed in pair in current image/video coding standards without taking the quantization effect into account. Yet, the distribution of quantized DCT coefficients deviate from that of original DCT coefficients. This is particularly obvious when the quality factor of JPEG compressed images is small. To address this problem, we first use a set of training images to learn the compound effect of forward DCT, quantization and dequantization in cascade. Then, a new IDCT kernel is learned to reverse the effect of such a pipeline. Fuzz testing, or fuzzing, has become one of the de facto standard techniques for bug finding in the software industry. In general, fuzzing provides various inputs to the target program to discover unhandled exceptions and crashes. In business sectors where the time budget is limited, software vendors often launch many fuzzing instances in parallel as common means of increasing code coverage. However, most of the popular fuzzing tools in their parallel mode-naively run multiple instances concurrently, without elaborate distribution of workload. This can lead different instances to explore overlapped code regions, eventually reducing the benefits of concurrency. In this paper, we propose a general model to describe parallel fuzzing. This model distributes mutually-exclusive but similarly-weighted tasks to different instances, facilitating concurrency and also fairness across instances. Following this model, we develop a solution, called AFL-EDGE, to improve the parallel mode of AFL, considering a round of mutations to a unique seed as a task and adopting edge coverage to define the uniqueness of a seed. We have implemented AFL-EDGE on top of AFL and evaluated the implementation with AFL on 9 widely used benchmark programs. It shows that AFL-EDGE can benefit the edge coverage of AFL. In a 24-hour test, the increase of edge coverage brought by AFL-EDGE to AFL ranges from 9.49% to 10.20%, depending on the number of instances. As a side benefit, we discovered 14 previously unknown bugs.

Science of science (SciSci) is an emerging discipline wherein science is used to study the structure and evolution of science itself using large data sets. The increasing availability of digital data on scholarly outcomes offers unprecedented opportunities to explore SciSci. In the progress of science, the previously discovered knowledge principally inspires new scientific ideas, and citation is a reasonably good reflection of this cumulative nature of scientific research. The researches that choose potentially influential references will have a lead over the emerging publications. Although the peer review process is the mainly reliable way of predicting a paper's future impact, the ability to foresee the lasting impact based on citation records is increasingly essential in the scientific impact analysis in the era of big data. This paper develops an attention mechanism for the long-term scientific impact prediction and validates the method based on a real large-scale citation data set. A light-weight low-resolution face gender classification method, called FaceHop, is proposed in this research. We have witnessed rapid progress in face gender classification accuracy due to the adoption of deep learning (DL) technology. Yet, DL-based systems are not suitable for resource-constrained environments with limited networking and computing. FaceHop offers an interpretable non-parametric machine learning solution. It has desired characteristics such as a small model size, a small training data amount, low training complexity, and low-resolution input images. FaceHop is developed with the successive subspace learning (SSL) principle and built upon the foundation of PixelHop++. The effectiveness of the FaceHop method is demonstrated by experiments. For gray-scale face images of resolution $32 \times 32$ in the LFW and the CMU Multi-PIE datasets, FaceHop achieves correct gender classification rates of 94.63% and 95.12% with model sizes of 16.9K and 17.6K parameters, respectively. It outperforms LeNet-5 in classification accuracy while LeNet-5 has a model size of 75.8K parameters.

By analyzing the motion of people and other objects in a scene, we demonstrate how to infer depth, occlusion, lighting, and shadow information from video taken from a single camera viewpoint. This information is then used to composite new objects into the same scene with a high degree of automation and realism. In particular, when a user places a new object (2D cut-out) in the image, it is automatically rescaled, relit, occluded properly, and casts realistic shadows in the correct direction relative to the sun, and which conform properly to scene geometry. Most of the current anti-jamming algorithms for wireless communications only consider how to avoid jamming attacks, but ignore that the communication waveform or frequency action may be obtained by the jammers. Although existing anti-jamming methods can guarantee temporary communication effects, the long-term performance of these anti-jamming methods may be depressed when intelligent jammers are capable of learning from historical communication activities. Aiming at this issue, a hidden anti-jamming method based on the idea of reducing the jammer's sense probability is proposed. Firstly, the sensing probability of the jammer is obtained by calculating the correlation between the actions of the jammer and the user. Later, a deep reinforcement learning framework is designed, which aims at not only maximizing the communication throughput but also minimizing the action's correlation between the jammer and the user. Finally, a hidden anti-jamming algorithm is proposed, which links the instantaneous return with the communication quality of users and the correlation between users and jammer. The simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm not only avoids being sensed by the jammer but also improves its anti-jamming performance compared to the current algorithm that only considers jamming avoidance.

We propose Differentiable Surface Splatting (DSS), a high-fidelity differentiable renderer for point clouds. Gradients for point locations and normals are carefully designed to handle discontinuities of the rendering function. Regularization terms are introduced to ensure uniform distribution of the points on the underlying surface. We demonstrate applications of DSS to inverse rendering for geometry synthesis and denoising, where large scale topological changes, as well as small scale detail modifications, are accurately and robustly handled without requiring explicit connectivity, outperforming state-of-the-art techniques. We propose a novel learnable representation for detail preserving shape deformation. The goal of our method is to warp a source shape to match the general structure of a target shape, while preserving the surface details of the source. Our method extends a traditional cage-based deformation technique, where the source shape is enclosed by a coarse control mesh termed cage, and translations prescribed on the cage vertices are interpolated to any point on the source mesh via special weight functions. The use of this sparse cage scaffolding enables preserving surface details regardless of the shape's intricacy and topology. Our key contribution is a novel neural network architecture for predicting deformations by controlling the cage. We incorporate a differentiable cage-based deformation module in our architecture, and train our network end-to-end. Our method can be trained with common collections of 3D models in an unsupervised fashion, without any cage-specific annotations. Recent methods for learning a linear subspace from data corrupted by outliers are based on convex $\ell_1$ and nuclear norm optimization and require the dimension of the subspace and the number of outliers to be sufficiently small. In sharp contrast, the recently proposed Dual Principal Component Pursuit (DPCP) method can provably handle subspaces of high dimension by solving a non-convex $\ell_1$ optimization problem on the sphere. However, its geometric analysis is based on quantities that are difficult to interpret and are not amenable to statistical analysis. In this paper we provide a refined geometric analysis and a new statistical analysis that show that DPCP can tolerate as many outliers as the square of the number of inliers, thus improving upon other provably correct robust PCA methods. We also propose a scalable Projected Sub-Gradient Method method (DPCP-PSGM) for solving the DPCP problem and show it admits linear convergence even though the underlying optimization problem is non-convex and non-smooth. Experiments on road plane detection from 3D point cloud data demonstrate that DPCP-PSGM can be more efficient than the traditional RANSAC algorithm, which is one of the most popular methods for such computer vision applications.

The rapid evolution of scientific research has been creating a huge volume of publications every year. Among the many quantification measures of scientific impact, citation count stands out for its frequent use in the research community. Although peer review process is the mainly reliable way of predicting a paper's future impact, the ability to foresee lasting impact on the basis of citation records is increasingly important in the scientific impact analysis in the era of big data. This paper focuses on the long-term citation count prediction for individual publications, which has become an emerging and challenging applied research topic. Based on the four key phenomena confirmed independently in previous studies of long-term scientific impact quantification, including the intrinsic quality of publications, the aging effect and the Matthew effect and the recency effect, we unify the formulations of all these observations in this paper. Building on a foundation of the above formulations, we propose a long-term citation count prediction model for individual papers via recurrent neural network with long short-term memory units. Extensive experiments on a real-large citation data set demonstrate that the proposed model consistently outperforms existing methods, and achieves a significant performance improvement., There is another new version of this paper.
