Societal Impact Statement Polls continue to show distressingly high percentages of people around the world do not accept that evolution has occurred. Even among individuals who accept evolution, surveys indicate that many do not understand its mechanistic basis, natural selection. Botanical gardens and arboreta are typically not viewed as museums of natural history. Yet, these institutions house collections of living museum objects that can allow visitors to directly observe ongoing evolution, namely, mutations and the origin of biological novelty, the astonishing amount of variation within species, and the consequences of selection that underlie descent with modification. When botanical gardens and arboreta are reconceptualized as museums of living, evolving objects, there will be huge opportunities to engage and educate the public about the process of evolution through the lens of horticulture and botany. Summary Plants are central to the evolutionary history of biodiversity on Earth. However, unlike most museums of natural history, botanical gardens and arboreta are typically less engaged in the important mission of promoting the public's understanding of evolution. As museum collections of living (and evolving) objects, botanical gardens and arboreta have a unique set of opportunities to teach the public about evolutionary processes in ways that complement the efforts of traditional natural history museums. Charles Darwin himself relied heavily on his extensive reading of the horticultural and botanical literature to gain insights into evolutionary process and, after publication of On the Origin of Species, made plants the frequent centerpiece of his many books to convince the world of natural selection and descent with modification. There is good reason to believe that Darwin's highly effective 19th century botanical tactics for promoting evolutionary ideas among scientists and the broader society remain equally compelling today in the 21st century.

This study consists of the development of tree growth models to deduce stands productivity and determine the highest productive species in the conditions of the concerned plantation. Seven Eucalyptus, introduced in the arboretum of Souiniet (north-west of Tunisia, wet Mediterranean bioclimate) in a Cork Oak natural forest, were studied. Stem analysis and non-linear growth modeling regression equations were used to predict wood productivities. Gompertz and Chapman–Richards growth function appeared as being great numerical models to estimate the Eucalyptus tree diameter and height evolutions, respectively. Moreover, an adapted Chapman–Richards model allowed predicting the volume of trees in an efficient manner. The values of mean annual volume productivity of the Eucalyptus spp.studied, allow us to classify them in order of increasing annual productivity, as follows: E. sideroxylon, E. cinerea, E. maidenii, E. macrorhyncha, E. tereticornis, E. viminalis and E. bicostata. The first three Eucalyptus spp. appeared as the best-adapted and most suitable Eucalyptus trees for new plantations in this area. These species had the highest mean annual increments, ranged from 5 to 10 m3.ha−1.year−1 with 15 to 20 years of rotation. E. bicostata is the most promising, with annual average production exceeding 10 m3.ha−1.year−1 after 25 years, and reaching 20 m3.ha−1.year−1 at 40 years old. These modeling approaches provide additional knowledge on the productivity of the different Eucalyptus species, thus enabling forestry operators to simulate the development of forest stands in order to optimize timber production and harvesting.

En Afrique tropicale, dans les plantations forestières, la majorité des espèces autochtones ont été délaissées au profit d’espèces exotiques à croissance initiale rapide. Cette tendance est encore plus marquée dans les zones soudanienne et soudano-guinéenne à longue saison sèche. Ainsi s’explique le manque de connaissances sur les potentialités et la sylviculture des espèces d’arbres autochtones ou « locales ». Pour contribuer à l’acquisition de ces connaissances indispensables, un arboretum de 2,56 ha a été installé en 1990 à proximité de Korhogo dans le nord de la Côte d’Ivoire. Sa particularité réside dans la mise en place de grandes parcelles de 1 596 m² avec 224 plants par espèce afin d’y mener une sylviculture qui conserverait de 10 à 16 arbres adultes de chaque espèce, exploitables notamment pour le bois d’œuvre, au terme de la révolution. Par manque de maîtrise des techniques de pépinière pour certaines espèces, seules 12 espèces sur 22 ont été plantées avec les 224 plants prévus au départ. Les résultats sont présentés pour l’ensemble des espèces testées, aussi bien en pépinière qu’en plantation. Cet arboretum a été régulièrement suivi jusqu’en 1999 puis ne l’a plus été en raison des évènements politiques qui ont perturbé la bonne administration du pays. Une campagne de mesures a été diligentée en novembre 2019 qui a permis notamment de tirer des conclusions intéressantes sur l’aptitude de 15 espèces à croître en peuplements équiennes monospécifiques, dont deux (Pterocarpus erinaceus Poir. et Anogeissus leiocarpa (DC.) Guill. & Perr.) qui montrent une productivité remarquable. L’ensemble des données recueillies depuis la récolte des graines et tout au long de la vie de l’arboretum sont présentées ici et discutées dans l’espoir que les sylviculteurs de cette zone phytogéographique en tirent le meilleur profit. Les enseignements acquis doivent servir à la restauration des forêts et des paysages grâce aux reboisements auxquels les États se sont engagés pour lutter contre les variations climatiques, la perte de biodiversité et la dégradation des services écosystémiques aux populations.

Aim. The aim of the article is to reveal the development project for restoring and reconstruction of misaligned and overripe plantations of the new coniferetum of the Dendrological Park «Askania-Nova». Materials and Methods . The stands of trees were studied by satellite navigation and their electronic map was made. A taxonomic composition, a phytocoenotic structure and landscape-spatial organization of the coniferetum’s plantations had been analyzed. The changes of these indices were shown in retrospective review. Results . The concept of reconstruction which foresees the creation of new collections of generic complexes Tsuga, Cedrus, Ephedra, Thujopsis, preservation of the modern landscape-spatial organization of Pinaceae, Taxodiaceae, Ginkgoaceae, Cupressaceae collections, and their significant enrichment had been proposed. The main and additional assortment of plants was selected. It contained 180 taxa, 88 species and 92 cultivars (forms), 18 genera of 8 families. Conclusions . The implementation of the reconstruction project will provide for the long-term functioning of the gymnosperm collection in a composition of the Dendrological Park “Askania-Nova».

Vegetation has a strong influence on soil characteristics. Vegetation can contribute organic matter sand nutrients to the soil. This study aimed to assess soil fertility through various approaches physical and chemical soil on various types of cover crop in the arboretum area at University of Lampung, and determined the type of cover crop that had the best effect on soil fertility. The research was be conducted by a survey method, which made observations on the soil characteristics of six species of cover crops following were rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia), teak (Tectona grandis), albizia (Paraserianthes Albiziaria), acacia (Acasia mangium), fern tree (Filicium desipiens), and mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King). Soil characteristics observed data were the physical and chemical properties, obtained by field observations, through boring profiles and soil sampling. The results showed that soil fertility on rosewood, albizia, acacia and mahogany on campus area of Lampung University had contents of soil organic C, organic matter, and soil total N higher than teak and Fern tree. Litter from Rosewood, Albizia, and acacia had the best effect on soil fertility, so they could be the best covered vegetation to improve soil characteristics related to optimal and sustainable of land management. Background and purpose: Social aspects of forestry have always been an important factor of forest usage and management, and therefore have significant influence on its sustainability. Non-wood forest functions such as recreation, tourism, aesthetic and educational factors influence development of rural areas. Contingent valuation method has rarely been used for evaluation of protected forest areas. The aim of the article is to estimate the amount of money visitors are willing to pay for nature’s resources preservation in the arboretum Opeka in the North-West Croatia. Material and methods: Opeka Arboretum is situated in the Vinica municipality in northern Croatia. Located in a large park surrounding a manor, Opeka arboretum, with its 65 hectares is the largest of the three arboretums existing in Croatia today. The arboretum was founded in 1860 by the Count Marko Bombelles. Contingent valuation is a survey-based economic technique for the non-market valuation of resources, such as environmental preservation or the impact of contamination. It is also the only approach that can generally be used to include what is usually referred to as the passive use component of the economic value of environmental goods. Results and conclusion: Willingness to pay for visitor’s use of the arboretum has been investigated using the survey and contingency valuation method on a sample of 53 respondents. Research results present high preference for arboretum benefits such as beauty of landscape, cultural and historical significance, recreation and health but low willingness to pay.

International audience; The realized host range of herbivores is expected to increase with herbivore population density. Theory also predicts that trait similarity and phylogenetic relatedness between native and exotic plants is expected to increase the susceptibility of introduced plants to feeding by native herbivores. Whether the ability of native herbivores to extend their host range to introduced species is density dependent is still unknown. We addressed this question by monitoring pine processionary moth (PPM, Thaumetopoea pityocampa) attacks during nine consecutive years on 41 pine species (8 native and 33 introduced) planted in an arboretum. The survey encompassed latent and outbreak periods. A total of 28 pine species were attacked by PPM. There was no difference in the probability of attack between native and introduced pine species. Host range increased and was more phylogenetically clustered during outbreak than latent periods. When population density increased, PPM expanded its diet breadth by attacking introduced pine species that were closely related to native hosts. This study demonstrates the density dependence of host range expansion in a common pine herbivore. Importantly, it supports the idea that the degree of phylogenetic proximity between host species can be a better predictor of attacks than the introduction status, which may help to predict the outcomes of new plant-herbivore interactions.

The Buda Arboretum of the Szent István University is situated in the western-middle part of the city of Budapest. It contains 1640 taxa of woody plants on an area of 7.5 ha. The sheltered position and the urban micro- and meso-climate is favourable for warm-loving, even subtropical plants, of which many species not simply stay alive, but flower, bear fruits and are spreading by seedlings in suitable spots. These instances call our attention to the possibilities that urban climate offers for landscapers, but also to over 110 species, which can be garden escapes in the future. Full list of plants, which tend to escape in the Arboretum is given in the paper.

International audience; Pour suivre un engagement pris au cours de la conférence interministérielle de Strasbourg, en 1990, la France a entrepris des recherches d'amont, la mise en place de réseaux et le transfert de connaissances portant sur la protection des ressources génétiques forestières. Dix ans plus tard, un bilan est réalisé. Des activités d'amont ou des réseaux sont en place pour 11 espèces ou écosystèmes. Ces activités sont coordonnées au plan national par la Commission des Ressources génétiques forestières qui rassemble des représentants des organismes impliqués : INRA, Cemagref, AFOCEL, plusieurs universités, ENGREF et ONF. Cinq publications scientifiques ou techniques, illustrant l'évolution des connaissances et l'état des réalisations, sont présentées. Des perspectives présentant les besoins en recherche et en mise en place de réseaux sont envisagées. La France n'agit pas seule. Elle situe son activité dans un cadre européen (Europe des Quinze et autres pays européens) coordonnée par EUFORGEN (European Forest Genetic Resources).

International audience; Le 26 décembre 1999, la tempête qui venait de traverser la France s'est abattue sur la Lorraine. Elle a durement touché l'arboretum d'Amance, causant des dégâts importants mais épargnant la majeure partie des collections. Un premier bilan des destructions a été établi : il montre que 3,6 % des espèces feuillues et 5,7 % des espèces résineuses ont disparu. D'autres espèces sont menacées de disparition : celles dont il ne reste plus qu'un ou deux exemplaires, parfois en mauvais état. C'est le cas pour 5 % des espèces feuillues restantes et pour 12,9 % des espèces résineuses restantes. C'est le secteur "Amérique de l'Ouest, côte Pacifique" qui a été le plus durement touché, suivi du secteur "Amérique de l'Est, côte Atlantique". L'arboretum de collection d'Amance n'est pas détruit, et sa remise en état, grâce aux subsides exceptionnels qui ont déjà été dégagés par l'INRA, est bien avancée. Elle se poursuivra par la remise en état des parcelles et par l'introduction (ou la réintroduction) d'espèces plus thermophiles, pour prendre en compte le changement climatique que nous sommes probablement en train de vivre

Aux abords de l'École forestière de Mbalmayo au Cameroun, un arboretum a été installé à partir de 1956. Il a été suivi et protégé par plusieurs générations d'enseignants avec l'appui de diverses agences de coopération. À l'occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de sa création, une étude y a été menée sur quinze parcelles afin de mesurer leurs principaux paramètres dendrométriques et de pouvoir estimer leur productivité en bois d'oeuvre. Les peuplements de bété, Mansonia altissima, de framiré, Terminalia ivorensis, et de wengé, Milletia laurentii, présentent une bonne production ligneuse qui augure de belles perspectives pour le reboisement. Les parcelles, au départ monospécifiques, abritent à présent une régénération naturelle variée d'espèces ligneuses et herbacées. Ces résultats permettent de justifier une reprise des plantations de bois d'oeuvre en zone de forêt dense humide d'Afrique centrale. Les grandes plantations industrielles, qui ne sont plus aujourd'hui prioritaires, cèdent utilement la place à de petites plantations individuelles ou à des boisements collectifs ou communaux plus étendus. Le Programme sectoriel Forêt et Environnement financé par un mécanisme de remise de la dette doit y contribuer. (Résumé d'auteur)
