The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is an apex predator occurring across North America and Eurasia. The species has received considerable conservation focus in late-seral conifer forests of western North America, where its habitat has been substantially reduced and altered by timber harvest and is increasingly at risk from high severity fire, drought, and forest pathogens. In the Sierra Nevada range of California, management and conservation of goshawks are hampered by a lack of knowledge of their basic space use and movement ecology. We used global positioning system (GPS) loggers to investigate space use of 20 resident, adult Northern Goshawks over 3 yr (2015–2018) in the Plumas National Forest, California. Median home range sizes of male goshawks were more than twice as large as those of females, and nonbreeding-season home ranges were three times larger than breeding-season home ranges. High resolution GPS data (location interval 1–6 min) allowed quantification of daily transit distances up to 60 km for individual goshawks and revealed long-distance forays into adjacent territories and surrounding areas. Four goshawks (three males, one female) undertook forays >8 km from their nest locations, with forays lasting up to 6 d; these forays occurred during both breeding and nonbreeding seasons for both sexes. Comparing our results to current conservation approaches, we determined that USDA Forest Service goshawk Protected Activity Centers protected <25% of both the roost locations and the area used during the daytime. Conservation efforts for Northern Goshawks in the Sierra Nevada would benefit from consideration of year-round habitat needs at larger scales than previously thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drought extent and severity have increased and are predicted to continue to increase in many parts of the world. Understanding tree vulnerability to drought at both individual and species levels is key to ongoing forest management and preparation for future transitions in community composition. The influence of subsurface hydrologic processes is particularly important in water‐limited ecosystems, and is an under‐studied aspect of tree drought vulnerability. With California's 2013–2016 extraordinary drought as a natural experiment, we studied four co‐occurring woodland tree species, blue oak (Quercus douglasii), valley oak (Quercus lobata), gray pine (Pinus sabiniana), and California juniper (Juniperus californica), examining drought vulnerability as a function of climate, lithology and hydrology using regional aerial dieback surveys and site‐scale field surveys. We found that in addition to climatic drought severity (i.e., rainfall), subsurface processes explained variation in drought vulnerability within and across species at both scales. Regionally for blue oak, severity of dieback was related to the bedrock lithology, with higher mortality on igneous and metamorphic substrates, and to regional reductions in groundwater. At the site scale, access to deep subsurface water, evidenced by stem water stable isotope composition, was related to canopy condition across all species. Along hillslope gradients, channel locations supported similar environments in terms of water stress across a wide climatic gradient, indicating that subsurface hydrology mediates species' experience of drought, and that areas associated with persistent access to subsurface hydrologic resources may provide important refugia at species' xeric range edges. Despite this persistent overall influence of the subsurface environment, individual species showed markedly different response patterns. We argue that hydrologic niche segregation can be a useful lens through which to interpret these differences in vulnerability to climatic drought and climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three-dimensional structure of vegetation plays a key role in animal ecology and the arrival of LiDAR technologies has given ecologists the ability to understand species-habitat relationships in increasing detail. However, few studies have investigated the trait-environment relationships that underpin diverse animal relationships with vegetation structure. We used terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and acoustic bat surveys to investigate relationships between forest structure and bat communities across a vegetation structural gradient at community, species and trait levels. We developed 20 measures of site scale vegetation structure and also quantified landscape scale vegetation cover and water availability. We predicted that overall bat activity would increase in open and decrease in cluttered vegetation, but this would vary with species, underpinned by ecomorphological traits. Overall bat activity was negatively associated with stem density, with total activity halving (from 380 to 190 calls night − 1 ) as stem densities increased from 60 to 1350 stems ha − 1 , while foraging activity declined from 8 to < 1 feeding buzzes night − 1 over the same range. Bat activity varied among species and structures and foraging strategy explained more of this variability than call, body size or wing traits. As predicted, above-canopy and edge-space foraging bats were negatively associated with local-scale clutter, while closed-space species were positively associated with cluttered stands. Stem density was the strongest predictor of bat-environment relationships, although there was evidence for differences in bat habitat use across different structural elements. Over half of the world's forests are secondary regrowth and support considerable biodiversity. Thinning of these forests is a widespread management practice that can affect forest species, including echolocating bats and their prey., We compared total activity of 11 bat taxa, foraging activity of six bat guilds and biomass of 11 insect orders across four forest thinning categories in managed remnant eucalypt forests in south-eastern Australia: unthinned regrowth, forest thinned recently (0-4 years) and in the medium term (5-10 years) and reference (mature open forest). Thinning had been carried out at large (˜350 ha) spatial scales., Total bat activity was 60% less and foraging activity was 80% less in unthinned regrowth, compared to reference sites, but activity levels were similar among thinned and reference sites. Insect biomass was greatest in unthinned sites, and while bat activity was related to prey biomass, this relationship was weak in unthinned sites. Together, this suggests that forest structure was more important than prey availability or time since thinning in influencing bat activity patterns., Synthesizing our findings with the broader literature on bats and thinning, we found support for a clutter threshold of 1100 stems ha−1, above which bat activity was markedly lower, across two continents (the USA and Australia) and four broad vegetation types (eucalypt, conifer, deciduous and mixed forests)., While elsewhere bats with adaptive traits for open habitats generally respond positively to thinning, in our study, species with traits consistent with clutter tolerance (high call frequency and low wing aspect ratio) had lowest activity levels (up to 22 times) in unthinned regrowth compared to all other forest types., Synthesis and applications. Widespread dense regrowth forest can restrict movement and foraging of bats, even those adapted to clutter. We recommend thinning dense regrowth or plantations to below 1100 stems ha−1 when targeting bat foraging habitat, but effects of thinning on roost habitat and other forest biota require further investigation.
