This article honours Amy Levai, nee O'Donoghue (1930-2013) who was a member of the Stolen Generations and South Australia's first Aboriginal woman to qualify as an infant teacher. Beginning with Amy's childhood at Colebrook Home and schooling, the article highlights her agency and resilience in countering racism to qualify and teach in the South Australian education department from January 1958. With the marriage bar still in place she was required to resign in 1965, but rejoined the state school system in the early 1970s. Negotiating nationwide policy shifts from assimilation to reconciliation, and concomitant education and curriculum reforms, Amy Levai taught in several schools including the Kaurna Plains Aboriginal school which opened in 1986. Always focussed on education as the key to social justice for Aboriginal and white Australians, Amy's reconciliation activism during her retirement is foregrounded in the final section of the article.

Countering violent extremism (CVE) continues to be a topic of national and international concern as well as media interest. In the field of CVE, educational institutions have an important role to play, but precisely how educators and policymakers should best respond to extremism within schools remains unclear. This article draws on interviews with multiple stakeholders implementing a small-scale nationally funded grant in Australian schools to guard against behaviours leading to violent extremism through developing restorative justice (RJ) practices. In foregrounding their accounts, we draw attention to the complexity of negotiating the CVE space by resisting dominant narratives that could be considered 'exaggerations' regarding both the manifestations of and motivations behind violent or extreme student behaviour. To conclude, we highlight how--in important ways--the money and resourcing allocated for CVE in local settings simply recycles what are already established to be best practices for fostering belonging and connection in schools, particularly in socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

Global neoliberalism is allowing manifold social inequalities to intensify under the 'fair' and neutral language of the market. On the eve of International Women's Day 2017, the statue "Fearless Girl" was installed facing Wall Street's iconic "Charging Bull," drawing to attention the ongoing gendered nature of these dynamics. Similar relations are transforming the field of higher education giving us pause to question implications for academic women. Using "Fearless Girl" as provocation, we critically consider our positionality as women involved in a mentoring programme once designed to redress underrepresentation of women in senior academic positions, now standardised to upskill a broad base of academics according to institutional benchmarks. Exploration of our subjectivities within a rapidly 'neoliberalising' milieu leads us to query if our formal mentoring programme can work in favour of gender equity. Questions to emerge for us raise broader questions about gender, mentoring and leadership in higher education.

This paper focuses on an Australian university short-term study abroad programme in India part-funded by the Australian Government New Colombo Plan -- an initiative that facilitates transformative people-to-people encounters. Our chief interest is extending our reach, through photo diaries and interviews, to understand how participants' experiences are transformative, how their knowledge production practices contribute towards constructions of global citizenship, and where opportunities to shape future participants' learning may exist. We explore decolonial possibilities for short-term study abroad under New Colombo, contextualising our inquiries historically while exploring the concepts of global citizenship and decoloniality -- ideas that provide a framework for analysis. Although short-term ventures are problematic for enabling two-way benefits, we contemplate how such programmes may still offer space for moving toward decoloniality.
