This paper analyzes three labor documentaries released from 1989 to 1991, which depict the United States' assumed transition from a Fordist to post-Fordist economy. Feminist textual analysis focuses on the depiction of workplaces and gender roles in Roger and Me, American Dream, and Fast Food Women. The analysis demonstrated that discourses of epochal change in the context only held true if one looked at a slice of the U.S. labor market largely dominated by White men. Focusing on feminine sex-typed labor demonstrated the worst elements of industrial Fordism remained in post-Fordist workplaces. The industrial revolution taking place since the 18th century has brought the global economies to the stage of mass production, mass industrialization and spreading ideas connected with its efficiency. The most famous of its kind is Fordism and its modern variations called Post- Fordism or Neo-Fordism. We can still see traditional way of producing things in some parts of the world, and the leading economies are using Ford's ideas or the modifications of the Ford's concepts. But there is a question about the place of these models in the modern economy, especially because mass-production causes mass-waste and modern societies has woken up to the reality of the global pollution, climate change or just the simple fact that the amount of the raw materials is limited. The social mood is slowly changing so there should be a change to the way we produce and consume things as well. There is a question: can we proceed within existing models or should we think outside the box so we can invent more suitable way of looking at efficiency and effectiveness. The objective of this paper is to contribute to the discussion about the future of how are we going to produce things. It is based on the literature review considering Fordism and its variations, Product Life Cycle facing issues like pollution, massive waste and changes in modern economy, as well as on the case study of implementing waste reduction activities in the product' design phase in the industrial plant based in one of the EU countries -- Poland. Consumption perceived more as an economic activity at first sight; beyond being a mere economic reality, it has a social, cultural and psychological dimension and meaning. As a matter of fact, as a result of the progress and transformations of the production system, which is a product of the economic system, consumption emerges as a way of participating in social life as a cultural practice and as an important instrument of developing social relations. In this context, the motto of "consume as much as you need" of the pre-industrial period has left its place to the motto "you have as much as you consume" shaped in line with themes and motives such as "desire, pleasure and status" during and after the industrial period. The subject of this study is the new appearances and new meanings of consumption shaped by changing production systems and consumer expectations. This article provides a study of precarisation through the lens of dress work : the mundane practice of dressing the body for work. Based on intimate in-depth wardrobe interviews and analyses of workers' narratives about their dressing practices, we develop a perspective on what insecure work feels like for workers in the interactive services and creative industries. We understand dress work as a materially mediated practice in which workers often aim to achieve a level of comfort: a state in which they are allowed to become less reflexive about their bodies. One of the ways in which precarisation makes itself known, we contend, is through the temporal logic of the interruption. The temporality of zero-hours contracts and short-term, insecure labour interrupts the achievement of comfort as workers are not allowed the time to experience their work, colleagues and spaces. This speculative paper enquires into the discourse of the 'end of labour' or 'disappearance of labour' as a result of the development of 'intelligent capitalism' clearly seen in 'intelligent manufacturing' systems that are now pursued and developed as Industry 4.0 strategy in East Asia, Germany and others parts of the world. Trump's campaign slogan forces us to ask a simple question: when was America great? Surely, what he has in mind here is the America of the post-war Fordist and Keynesian social welfare models, which saw both the rise of the new suburban middle class and the rise of the white patriarchal figure, the Oedipal agent of the 'father who knows best'. But the coming post-Fordist society has figured the dismantling of the welfare model under the austerity regimes of neoliberalism, at the same time displacing the phallic signifier of paternal authority. In the historical study of modern American capitalism, labor unfreedom in agriculture has been conceptualized as an exception to liberal labor relations in the post-slavery polity, from debt peonage to the threat of deportation from workplaces populated by non-citizen migrants. At the same time, state-enforced labor compulsions and restrictions are increasingly part and parcel of what scholars call neoliberal exceptionalism. This article argues that agricultural and neoliberal exceptionalisms are related, by tracing the historical genealogy and juridical production of a restrictive work status, the deportable temporary labor migrant, across political economies in the modern United States, from imperial construction in the Panama Canal Zone, to agriculture, to the knowledge economy. Contrary to existing notions of temporary work visas as a new form of unfreedom in neoliberalized advanced capitalist states, I show how the threat of deportation is older and rooted in the rise of the liberal regulatory state in a post-slavery, yet persistently racial capitalist political economy. The import of understanding this history of government intervention increases as the liberal regulatory state's coercive logics and practices intensify and circulate in agriculture and under a post-Fordist regime of accumulation, reproducing racial capitalism in the labor process. The article presents the impact of the introduction of lower secondary schools on the educational style of the working classes in Poland. This particular reform is seen as one of the elements of change to the education system adapting it to the general parameters of post-Fordism. The author supports the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, which states that society is divided into three social classes (upper, middle and popular) and each of them produces a specific lifestyle and style of education. The education style of a class provides individuals with certain dispositions to educational institutions and school careers, which are realised in the form of social practices (selection of specific type of schools, learning techniques, ways of spending time, etc.). The changes taking place in the education system in Poland over the last 15 years, i.e. since the 1999 reform, are similar to processes that occurred in the 1980s and 1990s in western countries. They include the economisation of education, the parameterisation and quantification of educational results, as well as the introduction of market mechanisms for managing and financing state-owned schools. The article is based on individual in-depth interviews conducted during two field studies organised in 2013-2014: Cultural practices of the working class (120 IDIs) and Class differences in cultural practices in the North-Eastern Poland (60 IDIs). Henry Ford's mass production system that began in 1914 by creating the moving assembly line has become the symbol of Fordism. Henry Ford adopted Frederic Winslow Taylor's scientific management approach which describes the motion and time study and put this system into practice which was the production system between the years 1945-1973. The progress of technology start to live the information age, the mass production system which cannot cope with the demands of consumers, the lack of flexibility in production, to begin to experience strong workers' resistance against the change, have led to inadequate, gradually. Flexible system of production, with another name post-fordist system, that first emerged in Italy has enabled the development of new manufacturing sectors and technological and commercial innovations. At the same time; it recognized socio-economically facilities to employees. The concept of flexible production corresponds to the concurrent period with the concept of new public administration approach. With the impact of new public administration in conjunction with the occurrence of innovation and change in public institutions the form of operation of staffs in government departments began to change. It is a well-known reality that capitalism forms the economic system of the world. Therefore, fordism and post-fordism contained in the economic system are also under the influence of capitalism. As shown in the research, fordism affects the modernism, and in the next step dealt post-fordism influences the post-modernism. On the other hand, the modernism and post-modernism theories have been considered through different perspectives by the "development literature" and the "underdevelopment literature". It is not possible to find a solution against the social development problem unless these theories are taken into consideration in terms of "underdevelopment" perspective. For this reason, in this article, investigation of the modernism and post-modernism theories has been concentrated in terms of underdevelopment based on production relations which determines economic systems. According to the findings acquired in literature review, modernism and post-modernism are beneficial for developed countries based on relations of production. Starting this point, this study aims to emphasize the factors that could be disadvantageous for underdeveloped countries and attempts to offer new policies intended to prevent the undesired effects of these factors. ‘Post-environmentalism’ is an approach to ecological modernisation in the United States which criticises mainstream environmentalism's emphasis on placing limits on economic activity to address the climate crisis. Building upon Ronald Inglehart's analysis of shifting cultural values, post-environmentalists Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger reject this antipathy towards economic growth because it undermines the material conditions that enable post-material, quality of life concerns like environmentalism to flourish in the first place. Yet some of the policies advocated by Nordhaus and Shellenberger to promote economic growth actually serve as obstacles to the realisation of post-material values. An alternative account of the emergence of modern environmentalism situates it within the transition from a Fordist to a post-Fordist model of economic growth. This analysis reveals more promising possibilities for promoting post-material values such as autonomy, self-realisation, and environmental concern than the proposals put forward by Shellenberger and Nordhaus. As a common mode of production, from 1910s to 1960s, Fordism has left its dominant position to Post-Fordism or Flexible Production and Accumulation Regime from the 1970s. As recent socio-demographic, economic and cultural changes affected and complicated the transition phase of youngsters to adulthood, it is particularly interesting to investigate in what way this affected their housing trajectories and changes the socio-spatial structure of cities. In the literature, two of such changes, gentrification and suburbanisation, are usually analysed separately. In this paper however, we explore these changes as alternatives for young adults and explain on what criteria youngsters may choose for one or the other in the case of the Brussels metropolitan area. The paper first details the spatial distribution of young adults and the households they live in. We then focus on the motivations and strategies young adults set up to approach their preferred place of living, taking the changing macro-social context into account. Our findings are young adults housing preferences didn't change that much compared to those of their parents and their place of living during their youth. Nevertheless, the changed context brought up new restrictions and difficulties, forcing specific groups of young adults to look for alternatives to their preferred place of living. Five new strategies emerge from this and explain the coexistence of gentrification and suburbanisation: suburbanization in itself, living on a higher distance of the city centre, second-class (sub)urbanization, delay of independent living and postponement of ownership. Gentrification is currently perceived by many critical scholars as a global urban strategy. However, cities differ in their attractiveness for the globalized actors often described as the main force behind this process. The question of the origin of the capital fuelling gentrification in unattractive cities appears therefore crucial. Drawing on the case of Roubaix, an example of the ‘successful’ politics of gentrification in a French ‘repulsive’ city, I will show that it is indeed local capital which starts the process. In this perspective inspired by both the regulation and the Lefebvrian theories of urbanization, the spread of gentrification in declining cities appears less the result of a top-down project driven by the key players of the globalized real estate market, than of a bottom-up project resulting from the needs of local capitalists to find a new way of realizing profits after the collapse of industrial production. A number of commentators have suggested that the shift from a Fordist to a post-Fordist regime of political economy has had positive consequences for sociology, including the reinforcement of critical sociologies (Burawoy, 2005; Steinmetz, 2005). This article argues that, although disciplinary hierarchies have been destabilized, what is emerging is a new form of instrumental knowledge, that of applied interdisciplinary social studies. This development has had a particular impact upon sociology. Savage and Burrows (2007), for example, argue that sociological knowledge no longer has a privileged claim to authority and is increasingly in competition with social knowledge produced by the private sector and agencies of the public sector. The response of many sociologists to such claims has been to reassert the importance of the discipline as the purveyor of critically relevant knowledge about society. The article traces how the idea of internal critique within sociology has developed to embrace ‘knowing capitalism’ (Thrift, 2005), at the same time as declaring the impossibility of sociological knowledge. The critique of sociology also becomes the critique of critique and what remains is the instrumentalization of knowledge. Where many sociologists continue to claim a special interest in critical knowledge, the article suggests that, in contrast, we potentially confront the problem that such knowledge may itself be facing a crisis of reproduction. This article explores the role that compassion plays in the building of a post-Fordist laboring public in Italy. By exploring how the state has made compassion productive through new regimes of voluntary labor, this piece shows that compassion operates not as a mitigating force against, but as a vehicle for the production and maintenance of a new exclusionary order precisely because it allows for the emergence of a fantasy of spontaneously available public emotion. Affective labor is a desired form of activity for marginalized members of Italian society because it allows them to approximate the form of social belonging that was centrally institutionalized and cultivated within Fordist societies-that of the capacity to belong to and be publicly recognized by the world through waged work. Fordism thus appears not as an era past, but as an object of desire and mourning that still retains much social force as people attempt to recapture or at least approximate Fordist forms and feelings of stability and belonging. The transition from Fordism to post-Fordism has been accompanied by profound changes in the spatiality of west European states. The hierarchical, top-down and redistributive structures that typified the Fordist welfare state have been replaced by more complex spatial configurations as elements of economic and political power have shifted both downwards to subnational territorial levels and upwards to the supranational level. A major debate has developed around the nature of these emerging forms of state spatiality and of the processes underpinning their formation. This paper examines how these processes have operated in the particular case of the Republic of Ireland. Here, the spatiality of the state was founded on a peculiar post-colonial combination of a localised populist politics and a centralised state bureaucracy. While this arrangement was quite suited to the spatial dispersal of industrial branch plants which underpinned regional policy in the 1960s and 1970s, it has become increasingly problematic with the more recent emergence of new trends in the nature and locational preferences of inward investment. This is reflected in the profound conflicts that have attended the formulation and implementation of the National Spatial Strategy, introduced in 2002. The result is a national space economy whose increasing dysfunctionality may now be compromising the very development model upon which Ireland's recent spectacular economic growth has been built. The article discusses the influence of scientific management principles on both manual and professional labor in the late 20th century, and their effect on workers, mainly in the form of decreased job security and quality of work life. The post-Fordist era of knowledge workers, high finance, and the service industry is seen as extending the principles of scientific management through innovations in labor flexibility and productivity such as outsourcing, layoffs, project-based teams, and employee participation in management. The ideas of scientific management theorist Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915) are discussed, as is their application in the eras of Fordism and post-Fordism.

Narrated by a depressive and socially isolated protagonist, Michel Houellebecq's first novel "Whatever" traces the disaggregating effects of post-Fordism on the intimate spaces of human affect. Set in the burgeoning information technology industry of the mid-1990s among a hitherto literarily neglected social group of middle managers (cadres), the novel suggests that the cultural project of post-Fordist capitalism blights all human relations and leads to an existential pauperization of everyday life. The affective spaces of the human subject are no longer sites of pleasure but deeply agonistic ones. Heir neither to the hygienic aesthetic of the nouveau roman nor to a "death of affect" strain of literary postmodernism, Houellebecq's work is generically difficult to situate in the French or Anglo-American novelist tradition. This research raises the effects that have had the different sort of labor organizations (Fordism and post-Fordism) in education. During the last decades, we attend to a situation of essential changes, in which the Fordism and Taylorism work organization form has been moved into new ones, called neo-Fordism, post-Fordism, flexible specialization. These changes within the economic and political reform seem to configure an answer to capitalist crisis in order to recover the lost cost-effectiveness levels. However we can not talk about a straight correlation between work organization types and educational field, many ideas and practices demonstrate that these work organizations had and still have an influence on educational ideas and practices. With Fordism and Taylorism speech, some changes are been introduced into education such as fragmented knowledge, positive and negative reinforcements, personalized assessment to each student, cost-effectiveness control, new sort of selection and professional training. With this new kind of labor organization, the education gains new duties based on "flexibility and adaptation skills" that must also have school establishments, the experts, managers and teachers in order to offer answers to unpredictable facts, singular situations or potential customers demands. The article discusses the disqualification of the concept of alienation in social critique under post-Fordism by replacing it with the terms democracy, justice and good life. The characteristics of democracy, justice and good life under Fordism are tackled. The notion of the problematic of alienation from the point of view of politician philosopher and socialist Karl Marx based on the publication "1844 Manuscripts" is explained. Also elaborated are the transformation of work and the resulting social exclusion in post-Fordism.

This article examines recent initiatives to reform the planning system in the UK. It adopts a Regulationist approach to locating the reform initiatives in a political-economic context and assessing their scale and nature. The main concepts and arguments of the Regulationist approach are summarized, then applied in interpreting three main phases of UK planning 'modernization'. It is concluded that planning reform has been conducted in a poorly understood context, whilst shackled to the legacy of its immediate post-war origins. Consequently, key elements of the UK planning system appear increasingly adrift from contemporary conditions, and outmoded in relation to new imperatives. This article critiques the post-national analytic frame now on the rise in American studies by considering the post-Fordist conditions of its very possibility. Given capitalism's evident shift away from a national regime of accumulation and toward a transnational one, transnational American studies should not presume itself to be automatically performing progressive ideological work. In the context of the postwar university's mediating role between knowledge and politics, the post-national frame in today's American studies appears to be positioned quite similarly to the national frame of the Cold War era that it displaces. Both frames delineate the imaginary field within which the ideological struggles of their respective historical moments occur. To become more politically effective, post-national American studies should aim its critiques less at the past-tense national narrative than at globalization's future-tense narrative of inevitability. This article focuses on contemporary subjects in the World of Labour, for a recomposition of the social block in the Post-Fordist era. The topics discussed include, the present economic phase, which is from globalization to global competition; economic phase and organization of the cycle of production from Fordism to Post-fordism; the new figures in the labor world; the case study; post-Fordism in Italy, new forms of labor division and new working class structure; different interpretative approaches towards the new phase of social conflict in each country; and relaunching the enquiry based on the analysis of the post-Fordism model in Europe.

The automobile as an object of consumption, carrying meanings and identities, has evolved through three ages during the 20th century, each characterized by a peculiar cultural logic. In the age of class distinction, the car served as a status symbol of the sort theorized by Pierre Bourdieu. It marked out differences between classes, while simultaneously misrecognizing and legitimating their origins. In the age of mass individuality, the car was a reified consumer commodity, as postulated by the theory of the Frankfurt School. It served to obscure qualitative class differences underneath the illusion of mass individuality, in which consumers varied by the quantity of desired automotive traits they could afford. In the age of subcultural difference, the car expressed the different identities of lifestyle groups in a leveled and pluralized consumer culture, as theorized by postmodernism. The extension of the cultural logic of each of these automotive ages ultimately contradicted its configuration, and pushed the car forward to the next age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In advanced capitalist democracies, increased historical referencing has occurred within a context of changing regulatory modes from Fordism to post-Fordism. In post-Soviet Russia, historical referencing differs because of the confluence of three transitions: Fordism to pos(Fordism, socialism to capitalism, and Soviet Russia to post-Soviet Russia. A theoretical analysis of contemporary institutional changes in the developed economies is attempted in order to characterize what a post fordist growth regime could be. One starts to recall some stylized facts about the present growth regime, i.e. about the contemporary dynamics of productivity on one side and of demand formation on the other side. We then discuss the main theoretical tools provided by the Regulation theory to analyse the institutional nexus which frames the growth regimes. The analytical framework of institutional change that we derive insist on the predominance at each period of one of the five structural forms that are distinguished by the Regulation School. As did the dynamics of institutional changes with the wage labor relationships in the previous period, today's evolutions of the forms of competition (broadly taken) condition all institutional changes. This gives us a general grid to define the features of a post Fordist regime. Still differences in history and structures leave room for sizeable differentiation in the national trajectories of the developed economies, all the more so that competition between nation States much prevent them to launch the structural policies that would be relevant with the new regime. This article examines the claims that we are living in a new global, post-Fordist era, The claims of both globalization and post-Fordism are examined, as well as some of the implications for development. Both theses are questioned, and in particular it is argued that in some respects the two arguments contradict rather than complement each other. An alternative approach is put forward, focusing on the contemporary context for development in the global economy, critically using the notion of global commodity chains. It is argued that we are currently witnessing a variety of strategies of capital accumulation in the world economy, and insofar as generalizations can be made, we have witnessed the end of the Third World as a homogeneous block. While some formerly peripheral countries are now a constituent part of the world economy, others are marginal to its needs. These countries are not so much exploited as simply left out.
