A chlorophyll content prediction model for predicting chlorophyll content in the pericarp of Korla fragrant pears was constructed based on harvest maturity and storage time. This model predicts chlorophyll content in the pericarp of fragrant pears after storage by using the error backpropagation neural network (BPNN), generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The results demonstrate that chlorophyll content in the pericarp of fragrant pears decreased gradually as the harvest time lengthened. The chlorophyll content in the pericarp of fragrant pears with different maturity levels at harvest decreased continuously with the increase in storage time. According to a comparison of the prediction performances of the BPNN and ANFIS models, it was discovered that the trained GRNN and ANFIS models could predict chlorophyll content in the pericarp of fragrant pears. The ANFIS model showed the best prediction performances when the input membership functions were gasuss2mf (RMSE = 0.006; R2 = 0.993), dsigmf (RMSE = 0.007; R2 = 0.992) and psigmf (RMSE = 0.007; R2 = 0.992). The findings of this study can serve as references for determining the delivery quality and timing of Korla fragrant pears.

In this study, we investigated the impact of harvest maturity stages and contrasting growing climates on secondary metabolites in Kinnow mandarin. Fruit samples were harvested at six harvest maturity stages (M1–M6) from two distinct growing locations falling under subtropical–arid (STA) and subtropical–humid (STH) climates. A high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) technique was employed to identify and quantify secondary metabolites in the fruit juice. A total of 31 polyphenolics and 4 limonoids, with significant differences (p < 0.05) in their concentration, were determined. With advancing maturity, phenolic acids and antioxidant activity were found to increase, whereas flavonoids and limonoids decreased in concentration. There was a transient increase in the concentration of some polyphenolics such as hesperidin, naringin, narirutin, naringenin, neoeriocitrin, rutin, nobiletin and tangeretin, and limonoid aglycones such as limonin and nomilin at mid-maturity stage (M3) which coincided with prevailing low temperature and frost events at growing locations. A higher concentration of limonin and polyphenolics was observed for fruit grown under STH climates in comparison to those grown under STA climates. The data indicate that fruit metabolism during advanced stages of maturation under distinct climatic conditions is fundamental to the flavor, nutrition and processing quality of Kinnow mandarin. This information can help in understanding the optimum maturity stage and preferable climate to source fruits with maximum functional compounds, less bitterness and high consumer acceptability.

Microgreens constitute novel gastronomic ingredients that combine visual, kinesthetic and bioactive qualities. The definition of the optimal developmental stage for harvesting microgreens remains fluid. Their superior phytochemical content against mature leaves underpins the current hypothesis of significant changes in compositional profile during the brief interval of ontogeny from the appearance of the first (S1) to the second true leaf (S2). Microgreens of four brassicaceous genotypes (Komatsuna, Mibuna, Mizuna and Pak Choi) grown under controlled conditions and harvested at S1 and S2 were appraised for fresh and dry yield traits. They were further analyzed for macro- and micromineral content using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), carotenoid content using high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD), volatile organic compounds using solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS), anthocyanins and polyphenols using liquid chromatography-high resolution-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with Orbitrap technology and for chlorophyll and ascorbate concentrations, well as antioxidant capacity by spectrophotometry. Analysis of compositional profiles revealed genotype as the principal source of variation for all constituents. The response of mineral and phytochemical composition and of antioxidant capacity to the growth stage was limited and largely genotype-dependent. It is, therefore, questionable whether delaying harvest from S1 to S2 would significantly improve the bioactive value of microgreens while the cost-benefit analysis for this decision must be genotype-specific. Finally, the lower-yielding genotypes (Mizuna and Pak Choi) registered higher relative increase in fresh yield between S1 and S2, compared to the faster-growing and higher-yielding genotypes. Although the optimal harvest stage for specific genotypes must be determined considering the increase in yield against reduction in crop turnover, harvesting at S2 seems advisable for the lower-yielding genotypes.

In an earlier study, an electronic tongue system (e-tongue) has been used to differentiate between orange juice made from healthy fruit and from fruit affected by the citrus greening or Huanglongbing (HLB) disease. This study investigated the reaction of an e-tongue system to the main chemicals in orange juice that impact flavor and health benefits and are also impacted by HLB. Orange juice was spiked with sucrose (0.2-5.0 g/100 mL), citric acid (0.1%-3.0% g/100 mL) and potassium chloride (0.1-3.0 g/100 mL) as well as the secondary metabolites nomilin (1-30 µg/mL), limonin (1-30 µg/mL), limonin glucoside (30-200 µg/mL), hesperidin (30-400 µg/mL) and hesperetin (30-400 µg/mL). Performance of Alpha MOS sensor sets #1 (pharmaceutical) and #5 (food) were compared for the same samples, with sensor set #1 generally giving better separation than sensor set #5 for sucrose, sensor set #5 giving better separation for nomilin and limonin, both sets being efficient at separating citric acid, potassium chloride, hesperitin and limonin glucoside, and neither set discriminating hesperidin efficiently. Orange juice made from fruit over the harvest season and from fruit harvested from healthy or HLB-affected trees were separated by harvest maturity, disease state and disease severity.

In southeastern regions of the US, herbage systems are primarily based on grazing or hay feeding with low nutritive value warm-season perennial grasses. Nutritious herbage such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) may be more suitable for preserving as baleage for winter feeding even with more intensive production inputs. Emerging in-line wrapped baleage storage systems featuring rapid wrapping and low polyethylene film requirements need to be tested for consistency of storing nutritive value of a range of annual ryegrass herbage. A ryegrass storage trial was conducted with 24-h wilted ‘Marshall’ annual ryegrass harvested at booting, heading and anthesis stages using three replicated in-line wrapped tubes containing ten round bales per tube. After a six-month storage period, nutritive value changes and fermentation end products differed significantly by harvest stage but not by bale location. Although wilted annual ryegrass exhibited a restricted fermentation across harvest stages characterized by high pH and low fermentation end product concentrations, butyric acid concentrations were less than 1 g/kg dry matter, and lactic acid was the major organic acid in the bales. Mold coverage and bale aroma did not differ substantially with harvest stage or bale location. Booting and heading stage-harvested ryegrass baleage were superior in nutritive value to anthesis stage-harvested herbage. Based on the investigated nutritive value and fermentation characteristics, individual bale location within in-line tubes did not significantly affect preservation quality of ryegrass round bale silages.

In this study, we investigated changes in the structural and immunological features of polysaccharides (S1-PLE0, S2-PLE0, and S3-PLE0) extracted from persimmon leaves at three different growth stages. Physicochemical analyses revealed that their chemical compositions, molecular weight distributions, and linkage types differed. High-performance size-exclusion chromatograms showed that the molecular weights of the polysaccharides increased during successive growth stages. In addition, seasonal variation of persimmon leaves affected the sugar compositions and glycosidic linkages in the polysaccharides. S2-PLE0 was composed of comparatively more galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, xylose, and galacturonic acid, showing the presence of &beta, glucopyranoside linkages. Significant differences also occurred in their immunostimulatory effects on RAW264.7 macrophages, with respect to which their activities could be ordered as S2-PLE0 &gt, S3-PLE0 &gt, S1-PLE0. Evidently, S2-PLE0 showed the greatest immunostimulatory activity by enhancing the phagocytic capacity and promoting nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines secretion through the upregulation of their gene expression in macrophages. These results suggest that differences in the structural features of polysaccharides according to the different maturity of persimmon leaves might impact their immunostimulatory properties. The results also provide a basis for optimizing persimmon leaf cultivation strategies for food and medical uses of the polysaccharides.

Ap?s seis meses, foi retirada a polpa dos putamens para a an?lise dos teores de caroten?ides totais, ? -caroteno, licopeno, vitamina A, prote?nas e lip?dios; teor de celulose, hemicelulose, pectinas total, c?lcio ligado ? parede celular e total, atividade da pectinametilesterase e poligalacturonase. Os resultados indicaram que os teores de pigmentos, lip?dios, prote?nas e atividade da PG aumentaram com o avan?o do est?dio de matura??o dos frutos. Por outro lado, houve diminui??o no teor da celulose com avan?o do est?dio de matura??o, enquanto os teores de hemicelulose e c?lcio n?o foram influenciados pela idade do fruto. O tipo de congelamento interferiu nos teores de pigmentos, maiores na polpa congelada em nitrog?nio l?quido, e na atividade da PG, maior na polpa congelada apenas em freezer. Por ?ltimo, os resultados mostraram que os frutos coletados na ?rvore s?o nutricionalmente inferiores aos coletados ap?s a queda natural. The experiment was carried out with the purpose to obtain information about changes in the constituents responsible for nutritive and texture traits of pequi pulp related with harvest time and types of freezing. Fruits were collected in the tree before natural fall, in the ground after natural fall and in the ground three days after natural fall. In each harvest time, while one batch of the putamens was frozen in liquid nitrogen and afterwards stored in a freezer, another batch was frozen directly in the freezer. After six months the following analyses were performed in the pulp: contents of proteins, total carotenoid, b-carotene, licopene, vitamin A and lipids (nutritive characters); content of cellulose, hemicelluloses, total pectin, total and bound calcium, activity of polygalacturonase (PG) and pectinmethilesterase (PME) of the cell wall. The contents of pigments, lipids, proteins and activity of PG were the highest in the most advanced stages of maturation of fruits. On the other hand the content of cellulose decreased with the advanced stages of maturation whiles the content of hemicelluloses, total and bound calcium were not affected at the stages of maturation of the fruits. The types of freezing affected the contents of pigments; higher in the pulp frozen in liquid nitrogen; and the activity of PG was higher in the pulp frozen directly in the freezer. The fruits collected in the tree showed the lowest eating quality as judged by their lowest contents of pigments, protein and lipids. The results indicate that the most appropriate harvest time to higher quality of pequi fruits is after natural fall.

Firmness decay, chlorophyll breakdown and carotenoid accumulation, controlled by ethylene, are major ripening events in mango fruit. Pigment content and tissue structure affect the optical properties of the mesocarp, which can be measured nondestructively in the intact fruit by time-resolved reflectance spectroscopy (TRS). This work is aimed at improving the maturity assessment in mango (Mangifera indica L. cv Haden) from Brazil, using TRS absorption in both the carotenoid and chlorophyll regions in order to develop a model for fruit ripening. Scattering and absorption in the 540–900 nm spectral range by TRS, ethylene production and respiration rate, and firmness, were measured in one day on each individual fruit of a sample covering the range of maturity. The fruit displayed a variability which was attributed to the different biological age. Absorption spectra showed two peaks at 540 and 670 nm, corresponding respectively to the tail of carotenoid absorption and to chlorophyll-a absorption. Carotenoids increased substantially only in fruit where chlorophyll had almost disappeared. The absorptions at 540 and 670 nm, which described the maturity state of each fruit relative to the range of each wavelength, were combined in one index of biological age (biological shift factor) for each fruit and used in logistic models of ethylene increase and firmness decay respectively. The model explained about 80% of the variability in ethylene production rate. A similar result was obtained for firmness when scattering was added in the model. The combination of absorption at 540 and 670 nm measured by TRS in the intact fruit can be used to classify mango fruit according to maturity and to predict the ripening of individual fruit.

Some primary and secondary metabolites, as well as mineral nutrients in pulp, peel and juice obtained from four Serbian indigenous apple cultivars (Kožara, Kolacara, Budimka and Sumatovka) collected at two different developmental stages were studied. With advanced maturation soluble solids content, total and reducing sugars increased, while l -ascorbic acid content and titratable acidity decreased. Thirteen phenolic compounds were quantified using LC–MS/MS. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 9.37 to 1440 mg/100 g fw, and 0.83 to 7.84 mg/100 g fw in peel and pulp samples, respectively. Quercetin derivatives were the major detected polyphenolic group. Majority of determined phenolic compounds were influenced by cultivar and the best sources were cultivars Kolacara and Budimka. The content of flavonols (with the exception of quercitrin) varied significantly depending on maturity at harvest. With regard to mineral analysis, K was the most abundant ranging from 104 to 158 mg/100 g fw in peel, 74.4 to 93.3 mg/100 g fw in pulp, and 77.1 to 91.5 mg/100 g fw in juice samples. Obtained results provide detailed information on nutritional potential and chemical composition of tested apple cultivars and thereby could encourage their wider cultivation and consumption.

Harvest time is one of the main factors related to guava fruit postharvest losses. It is subjectively determined by fruit size and skin color, without any consensual standardization among the growers. The use of maturity indexes enables growers to know the ideal harvest time according to each market situation. The objective of this work was to determine the maturity indexes to identify the harvest time for guava fruit cv. Kumagai and Paluma. Skin color, fruit firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, ratio and ascorbic acid were analyzed. The most adequate maturity indexes for 'Kumagai' guava fruit were skin color and pulp firmness, while for 'Paluma' guava fruit, the best indexes were skin color, pulp firmness, titratable acidity and ratio. O ponto de colheita é um dos principais fatores de perda pós-colheita e, em goiaba, este é determinado de maneira subjetiva através da coloração externa e tamanho do fruto, não havendo uma padronização consensual entre os produtores. A utilização de índices de maturação permite que se conheça o ponto de colheita ideal para cada situação mercadológica. Este trabalho objetivou determinar tais índices que permitam identificar o ponto de colheita em goiabas 'Kumagai' e 'Paluma', em cinco estádios de maturação. Avaliaram-se cor da casca, firmeza, teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, ratio e teor de ácido ascórbico. Os índices de maturação mais adequados para 'Kumagai' foram cor da casca e firmeza da polpa, e para 'Paluma', foram cor da casca, firmeza da polpa, acidez titulável e relação sólidos solúveis/acidez titulável.

The ripening of fruits like nectarines and peaches is characterised by the decrease in chlorophyll content or colour of the fruit flesh. However, measuring the colour of fruit flesh is usually not conducted, as there is a lack of suitable techniques. Time-Resolved Reflectance Spectroscopy (TRS) is a novel technique that can measure the light absorbed by the fruit flesh. Using a laser light beam at 670 nm, the chlorophyll content of the fruit flesh is assessed without disrupting the natural structure of the fruit. Data on individual fruits of different maturity at harvest were analysed based on a deterministic model using mixed effect non-linear regression. The results indicate that an analysis of data combined from pre- and post-harvest is possible. Using the theory of Biological Shift Factor, an explained part of 97% is obtained at 20° C and 85% at 10° C.

Volatiles of peach (Prunus persica L., cultivar, Gleason Early Elberta) fruit were studied by gas-liquid chromatography , thin-layer chromatography, and infrared spectrometry. Hard mature , firm mature, soft mature , tree ripe, and artificially ripened hard mature fruit obtained from four seasons , 1964 to 1967, were used. A total of 86 peaks were observed in the chromatogram of the tree ripe peach volatiles. Major components of the volatiles identified were mainly esters, gamma and delta lactones , aldehydes, alcohols, and terpenes. In general, concentration of the volatile components were found to increase with the maturity of the fruit. However, that of the artificially ripened fruit did not reach the same level of the tree ripe fruit.
