Abstract

The article presents a report on the premastication of food by caregivers of children exposed to human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) in nine U.S. sites from 2009 to 2010. According to the author, premastication or the chewing of foods or medicines before feeding to a child, was reported as a route of HIV transmission through blood in saliva and has been linked with transmission of pathogens. The author reports that an estimated 14 percent of caregivers in the U.S. report premastication.
