Research on domestic violence against women has increased considerably over the past few decades. Most participants in such studies find the exercise worthwhile and of greater benefit than emotional cost; however, systematic examination of participant reaction to research on violence is considerably lacking, especially in the Middle East region. This study begins to fill this gap by examining women's reactions to domestic violence research in Jordan and whether a personal history of violence is associated with unfavorable experiences. This sequential exploratory mixed methods study included 17 focus group discussions (FGD) with women in Amman followed by a survey conducted in reproductive health clinics throughout the country (pilot n = 30; survey n = 517). Open coding was used to identify the theme related to participant reaction in the FGD data. This construct was further examined by the subsequent survey that included dichotomous questions inquiring whether the respondent thought the study questions were important and whether they were angry or felt resentment as a result of the survey. One open-ended question on the survey provided additional qualitative data on the theme that was combined with the FGD data. Themes identified in the qualitative data pertained to expressions of gratitude and comments on the survey's value. Findings of this study indicate that Jordanian women's responses to the research process are similar to women currently represented by the extant literature in that a vast majority of its participants felt that the study was important (95%) and it did not evoke anger or resentment (96%). Many even found the study to be useful to them personally or to society. Among those who had a negative emotional reaction, most still found the research to be important. This study's findings highlight the safety and potential benefits of ethically conducted violence research. (Contains 3 tables.)

Background: To explore how Jordanian nurses participate in the end-of-life (EoL) decision-making process. Methods: Interviews with 10 patients and family caregivers, and focus group discussions with seven healthcare professionals (HCPs), were conducted. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed following inductive thematic analysis. Findings: The participants agreed that nurses are not fully engaged and did not have a direct role in the EoL decision-making process. However, the participants highlighted that 'nurses bridge the gaps in the decision-making process', where nurses act as mediators to facilitate the decision-making process. Lastly, nurses were viewed as 'nurturers and supporters during the journey of the patient's illness'; they were always available to answer their questions, offer help and advise when necessary during palliative referral and throughout the illness. Conclusions: Although nurses did not directly participate in EoL decisions, they have several vital contributions that need to be rearranged into structured decisional coaching. This study aims to explore the challenges in involving patients and their families in decision making near end of life and to provide recommendations to overcome these challenges. A qualitative descriptive phenomenological approach was used with a purposive sample of 8 patients, 7 family caregivers, 7 nurses, and 6 physicians from 2 institutions that provide palliative and end-of-life care services in Jordan. Data were collected using interviews with patients and family caregivers and focus group discussions with nurses and physicians. Colaizzi's method was used to analyze the data. The thematic analysis revealed 5 themes representing the participants' experiences of challenges with decision making near end of life. The identified challenges are (1) struggle with lack of information; (2) improper communication; (3) patient's or family's decision: the cultural taboo; (4) health care providers prefer staying in their comfort zone; and (5) the paradox of surviving and letting go. In addition, the participants endorsed several recommendations to raise public awareness of palliative and end-of-life care, amplify the patients' voice, and raise the bar of communication sensitivity. Decision making near the end of life is a challenge. Aims and objectives: To determine nurses’ perceptions related to smoking cessation, health promotion and interventions provided to hospitalised patients. Background: Smoking is a major health problem in Jordan. The cost for treating smoking‐related health conditions is a significant strain on the healthcare system. Nurses are in an ideal position to encourage smoking cessation. Little is known about Jordanian nurses’ perceptions related to smoking cessation issues. Methods: A qualitative design was used to collect data from 22 Jordanian nurses using focus groups. Purposive sampling was used to select the study participants. Content analysis was conducted, to determine themes related to the research questions. Results: Nurses indicated that smoking cessation counselling is important. However, they did not feel that their counselling was very effective. Nurses indicated that the presence of a well‐defined hospital policy regarding smoking was a facilitator to smoking cessation and antismoking clinics would also help to decrease smoking. Challenges to nurses’ interventions included lack of hospital policy, lack of time and nurses who smoke could not be role models or provide effective counselling. Regarding decreasing smoking in Jordan, nurses had suggestions that included scare techniques and increasing taxes on cigarettes as well as enforcing policies that prevent cigarette sales to children under 16. Conclusions: Nurses are well aware of the hazards of smoking and indicate a belief that encouraging smoking cessation is an appropriate activity. Changes in smoking rules and the enforcement of rules, as well as increased public health efforts related to smoking cessation, are necessary to decrease smoking prevalence in Jordan. Relevance to clinical practice: Training in smoking cessation counselling and increased awareness of the resources may increase nurses’ ability to have an impact on decreasing the smoking prevalence in Jordan. Purpose: To explore the lived experiences of nurses’ feelings, emotions, grief reactions, and coping mechanisms following their patients’ death. Background: On a daily basis, nurses are experiencing patients’ death, which exposes them to grief. Nurses’ grief has not been sufficiently addressed in practice settings, although it has been a well-known threat to health and work performance. Design: A qualitative design guided by a phenomenological approach was adopted. Method: Data were collected from a purposive sample of 21 Jordanian nurses by conducting three focus groups and analyzed using Colaizzi’s framework. Findings: Four themes were generated in which participants reported feelings of grief following their patients’ death. Their grief emotions were reported as sadness, crying, anger, shock, denial, faith, fear, guilt, fear of the family’s reaction, and powerlessness. Conclusions: The study provided evidence that nurses respond emotionally to patients’ death and experience grief. Nurses are burdened by recurrent patients’ deaths and try to cope and overcome their grief. This study emphasizes the importance of developing strategies to help nurses positively cope with their grief from a holistic perspective. This will reflect positively on the nurses’ performance. Although the postpartum period is a significant time in a family’s life, few studies have addressed the lack of continuity of care and service use during the postpartum period. The aim of this study was to explore the roles of family members in Jordanian women’s decision to use postpartum health care services. An exploratory qualitative design was employed to elicit the perspectives of 24 women and 30 health care providers through six focus groups discussions conducted in April 2006. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, translated to English, and analyzed using an inductive content analysis approach. In our study, three roles of family members influencing Jordanian women’s decision to use postpartum health care services emerged: supporter role, opponent role, and active participant in care role. Findings supported the need for a family-centered approach when providing postpartum care to enhance positive family roles and limit negative ones to promote continuity of healthcare services use during the postpartum period. Little is known about Jordanian women's help seeking for intimate partner violence (IPV), despite local and international investment in victim services. Using a clinic based survey (n = 517; response rate 70%) and focus group discussions (FGDs, n = 17) we explored Jordanian women's nonfamily help seeking for physical or sexual IPV. We evaluated survey data using bivariate and multivariate regression and examined FGD transcripts using open coding methodology. Nonfamily help seeking was uncommon, an option only in serious circumstances after familial help was ineffective, and correlated with violence severity and relative violence. Scand J Caring Sci; 2010; 24; 655-662 This qualitative descriptive study explored Muslim religious leaders' perception, knowledge and attitudes towards AIDS, AIDS prevention and their attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Twenty Islamic religious leaders (males and females) participated in two audio-taped focus group discussions. A content analysis approach was used to analyse the data as appropriate for descriptive qualitative inquiry. The study results showed that Muslim religious leaders do not perceive AIDS as a major health problem in Jordan, and that following the Islamic values lowers the risky behaviours. The religious leaders reflected varied responses to PLWHA but they agreed that they have responsibilities towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS, and that sex education contributes to healthy behaviours, and consequently to the prevention of HIV transmission. The findings of this study provided an insight into Muslim religious leaders' perception of PLWHA and highlighted the importance of their role in the prevention of AIDS. The study recommended that health care professionals, including nurses and health policy makers, should involve religious leaders in all efforts directed at planning and setting policies aimed at the prevention of HIV/AIDS and the treatment of infected people. Nurses should be responsible for conducting HIV/AIDS prevention programs in different settings utilizing relevant religious guidelines and teachings, in addition to providing holistic care to AIDS patients with emphasis on the spiritual dimension.
