Natural channel design (NCD) and analytical channel design (ACD) are two competing approaches to stable channel design that share fundamental similarities in accounting for sediment transport processes with designs based on hybrid fluvial geomorphology and hydraulic engineering methods. In this paper, we highlight the linkage between ACD's capacity/supply ratio (CSR) and NCD's sediment capacity models (FLOWSED/POWERSED), illustrating how ACD and NCD have reached a point of convergent evolution within the stream restoration toolbox. We modified an existing CSR analytical spreadsheet tool which enabled us to predict relative channel stability using both conventional bed load transport equations and regional sediment regression curves. The stable channel design solutions based on measured data most closely matched the Parker (ACD) and/or Pagosa good/fair (NCD) relationships, which also showed the greatest CSR sensitivity in response to channel alterations. We found that CSR differences among the transport relationships became more extreme the further the design width deviated from the supply reach, suggesting that a stable upstream supply reach may serve as the best design analog. With this paper, we take a step toward resolving lingering controversy in the field of stream restoration, advancing the science and practice by reconciling key differences between ACD and NCD in the context of reach scale morphodynamics. Rates of land surface processes provide insights into climatic and tectonic influences on topography. Bedrock incision rates are estimated by dating perched landforms such as strath terraces, assuming a constant bedrock incision rate from terrace abandonment to the next terrace level or present river level. These estimates express biases from the stochastic nature of sediment and water discharge in controlling river incision as well as from using a mobile channel elevation as a reference frame, leading to different incision rates when calculated over different timeframes. We introduce a 1‐D model incorporating fluvial mechanics, tectonics, sediment, and climate variability to predict these biases and assess their sensitivity to climate and tectonics. Findings suggest biases intensify under highly variable climates and slow rock uplift, with climate periodicity being a primary control for our modeled scenarios. Our model provides a mechanism to improve river incision measurement uncertainty, impacting paleoclimate and tectonic geomorphology reconstructions. Plain Language Summary: Geomorphologists often measure how fast rivers erode bedrock over time by dating river terraces that have been uplifted to be higher than the elevation of the modern river channel. This helps us learn how landscapes evolve and about what past climates were like over long timescales. But this method is complicated by the fact that rivers do not erode rocks at a steady rate and the elevation of the channel surface above which we measure terrace height changes over time. We present a numerical model that predicts how these terraces develop under different climates and rates of rock uplift. Past geomorphological models assume that erosion of sediments from old mountain belts occurred at a relatively constant rate, based on comparatively uniform isostatic adjustment caused by unloading. Late Miocene strata of the south-eastern United States provide an example of pulsed tectonism resulting in a surge in siliciclastic sediment production and transport. Regional tectonism (uplift of the southern Appalachian Mountains) and climatic conditions during the Late Miocene resulted in the long-distance (up to 1000 km) fluvial transport of coarse siliciclastic sediments onto a stable carbonate platform in southern Florida. The sediments are unusual in that they are significantly coarser than marine-transported sands in southern Florida, with discoidal quartz and quartzite clasts up to 40 mm in diameter locally present, and have relatively high potassium feldspar contents (up to 16% in some sample fractions), whereas feldspar is rare in modern Florida beach sands. It is suggested that previously documented rejuvenation of the southern Appalachian Mountains during the Middle to Late Miocene time, coupled with the Messenian sea-level low, generated the increased rate of sediment production and necessary hydraulic gradient to allow rapid transport of coarse sediments. Tectonic influence on the river pathway in Florida, as well as in the southern Appalachian Mountains, may have maintained the river on the narrow carbonate platform. The Florida Platform during the Late Miocene must also have had a sufficiently wet climate to cause episodic transport of the coarse sediments. Siliciclastic sediment transport on the Florida Platform during the Late Miocene greatly differed from Pleistocene to modern conditions, which are dominated by the transport of fine-grained sands by longshore marine processes. Research in fluvial biogeomorphology largely aims to promote our understanding of the interactions between riparian vegetation and fluvial morphodynamics within riverine ecosystems. Starting at the end of the last century, Angela M. Gurnell has made a major contribution to fluvial geomorphology by considering water flow and sediment transport in combinaton with riparian and later also aquatic vegetation and thus significantly promoting the fluvial biogeomorphological approach from its early days until today. The objective of the present paper is to present a set of studies and results obtained over the last 20 years mainly by the authors and many collaborators, including Angela M. Gurnell, on a panel of French rivers: the Tech, Garonne, Isère and Allier. In particular, feedback mechanisms between fluvial morphodynamics and riparian vegetation dynamics were investigated directly in the field and by using high‐resolution remote sensor systems at the scale of individual plants, populations, communities and landscapes as well as during semi‐controlled ex‐situ experiments at the scale of individual plants. Collectively, the authors' research conducted over the past 20 years has helped to elucidate some key aspects of the feedback dynamics between the lowest and highest levels of the riparian ecosystem organization. This article reviews and discusses those key aspects. The gradually obtained results have contributed to a better understanding and quantification of feedback between river morphodynamics and vegetation at nested spatiotemporal scales, from plant species traits to the riverine landscape. Furthermore, the biogeomorphological approach advocated for more than 20 years now has clearly facilitated the extension of the discipline of geomorphology to ecology in general and evolutionary ecology in particular and thus contributed to a more integrative vision of earth surface processes. Despite geomorphic processes being increasingly recognized as a vital component of river management projects, evidence suggests that they may not be adequately captured in common river assessment procedures. We reviewed 91 river assessment procedures from around the world to evaluate their effectiveness in capturing geomorphic processes relevant for river management goals. Our objectives were to summarize which common geomorphic indicators are measured and how in different types of river assessments categorized based on their main focus: geomorphic, physical habitat, mixed geomorphic and habitat, and hydromorphology. Our analysis identified differences in the types of geomorphic indicators included and measurement methodologies between the types of assessment procedures. Some geomorphic processes, such as sediment transport, are nearly completely absent from all assessments, despite their importance for geomorphic processes. The variability among assessment procedures suggests that a single procedure is unlikely to capture all geomorphic components required to support every river management programs. Here, we discuss how the strengths and limitations of different assessment types can be used to guide decisions around how to select assessments and geomorphic indicators to support management project goals. Headwater streams play an essential role in catchment hydrogeomorphology while supplying water and sediment to downstream reaches along the channel network. Adaptive management strategies which require ecological rehabilitation and natural hazards prevention methods are increasingly needed to sustain ecological services provided by headwater streams. However, environmentally sound and economically effective stream management techniques depend on relevant information on boundary conditions, operating processes and evolutionary trajectories of a river system, which are often unavailable. Therefore, it is desirable to provide river managers with scientifically rigorous, yet easy to apply tools (methods) to assess channel and catchment conditions. The present paper focuses specifically on the sediment supply and transport (SST) regime, a crucial component of the fluvial system and a source of significant hazard to people and infrastructures. The SST hazard and risk assessment procedure was developed for small headwater streams with a catchment area of up to ca. 50 km2. The method comprises two core modules. Module 1 is designed to rapidly evaluate susceptibility to SST hazard based on four catchment variables (relief, lithology, erosion-prone surfaces, and connectivity). Module 1 is intended primarily for river managers to differentiate between catchments and identify those with the highest probability of SST hazard. Module 2 comprises a detailed evaluation of channel and catchment variables; thus, it is to be conducted applying basic training in fluvial geomorphology and GIS skills. Module 2 includes five successive steps: channel network segmentation, identification of segments with vulnerable and hazardous anthropic elements, determination of the dominant mode of sediment transport, determination of SST hazard category, and calculation of SST risk score. The method was designed to balance the present-day understanding of sediment flux in the catchment-scale sediment cascades and applicability for target end-users, mostly technically educated professionals and research scientists in river mechanics and erosion and sedimentation. This study aimed to characterize the sedimentary facies and understand the morphodynamics of the study area, and their results were correlated with various analytical methods. Different analyses such as depositional environmental, statistical, shoreline change, and grain size illustrated the temporal and spatial distribution of sediments. It has previously been claimed that current research locations are locii to fluvial landforms and are affected by fluvial processes. However, there are currently no rivers in the study region. This study was done to better understand the presence of fluvial landforms and to evaluate the previous findings. The dynamic behavior of the coast was revealed through shoreline analysis, which was done using satellite images from various years. Oceanographic parameters and longshore sediment transport play a vital role in geomorphological changes in coastal zones. According to the grain size analysis results, mean values showed that the deposits predominantlyare medium grained. The outcome discussed the spatiotemporal variations in geomorphology, sedimentation, and the function of coastal and fluvial processes on the beach of an island and a sand spit. Also highlighted was the role that wave action, fluvial currents, and tidal currents had in the long-term evolution of coastal geomorphological features such as spits, beaches, open coasts, and islands. The standard deviation signifies that the sediments are very well sorted to poorly sorted. Skewness ranges from fine skewed to strongly fine skewed and the kurtosis values show that the sediments are predominately very platykurtic which implies a low-energy environment of deposition. Four sedimentary facies (Facies A, B, C, D) have been found and facies A, B, and C may be wave-influenced deposits, but facies D may be formed by fluvial processes and contain medium to sand-sized particles. The direction of the tip area is also pointing to the south and this result concluded that the tip area is continuously growing. Thus, the results of this study revealed that sediment transport and coastal geomorphology evolution may be governed by two main processes such as the present ocean hydrodynamics and paleo fluvial processes of the study regions. River profiles are shaped by climatic and tectonic history, lithology, and internal feedbacks between flow hydraulics, sediment transport and erosion. In steep channels, waterfalls may self‐form without changes in external forcing (i.e., autogenic formation) and erode at rates faster or slower than an equivalent channel without waterfalls. We use a 1‐D numerical model to investigate how self‐formed waterfalls alter the morphology of bedrock river longitudinal profiles. We modify the standard stream power model to include a slope threshold above which waterfalls spontaneously form and a rate constant allowing waterfalls to erode faster or slower than other fluvial processes. Using this model, we explore how waterfall formation alters both steady state and transient longitudinal profile forms. Our model predicts that fast waterfalls create km‐scale reaches in a dynamic equilibrium with channel slope held approximately constant at the threshold slope for waterfall formation, while slow waterfalls can create local channel slope maxima at the location of slow waterfall development. Furthermore, slow waterfall profiles integrate past base level histories, leading to multiple possible profile forms, even at steady‐state. Consistency between our model predictions and field observations of waterfall‐rich rivers in the Kings and Kaweah drainages in the southern Sierra Nevada, California, supports the hypothesis that waterfall formation can modulate river profiles in nature. Our findings may help identify how bedrock channels are influenced by waterfall erosion and aid in distinguishing between signatures of external and internal perturbations, thereby strengthening our ability to interpret past climate and tectonic changes from river longitudinal profiles. Plain Language Summary: Mountain rivers are shaped by tectonic and climatic forces; thus, the longitudinal profile of a river (a plot of river elevation vs. distance along the stream) can be used to investigate geologic history. Abrupt changes in river slope are often interpreted as signals of an external tectonic or climatic disruption. However, other factors may disrupt longitudinal profiles, including changes in rock type and differences in river erosion processes. Here, we investigate one such process: waterfalls formed by feedbacks between water flow, sediment transport and river‐bed erosion, and whether these waterfalls can alter longitudinal profiles without climatic or tectonic changes. We make a model to investigate what river profiles might look like if waterfalls naturally develop and alter erosion rates in all channels exceeding a specific slope threshold. Our model predicts that waterfalls generate distinct river profile features including a constant channel slope maintained over several kilometers where waterfalls occur and sharp increases in slope due to waterfall occurrence, both of which we have found in waterfall‐rich rivers in the southern Sierra Nevada, California. This research identifies similarities and differences between the impact of changes in tectonics and climate versus internal feedbacks such as self‐formed waterfalls on river profiles. Abstract The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution.

A field investigation has been undertaken to characterize the event-based bed load transport dynamics of a highly urbanized gravel bed stream. A combination of direct bed load and tracer particle measurements were taken over a 3 year period during which time approximately 30 sediment mobilizing events occurred. Sediment transport measurements were used to calibrate a fractional bed load transport model and combined with hydrometric data which represent four different land use conditions (ranging from rural to highly urbanized) to analyze the differences in discharge magnitude and frequency and its impact on sediment transport. Fractional transport analysis of the bed load measurements indicates that frequent intermediate discharge events can mobilize sand and fine gravel to an approximate equally mobile condition, however, the transport rates at these discharges exhibit greater variability than at discharges above the bankfull discharge. Path lengths of the coarse fraction, measured using tracer clasts, are insensitive to peak discharge, and instead transport at distances less than those reported in other gravel bed channels, which is attributed to the shorter duration discharge events common to urban streams. The magnitude-frequency analysis reveals that the frequency, time, and volume of competent sediment mobilizing events are increasing with urbanization. Variability in effective discharges suggests that a range of discharges, spanning between frequent, low magnitude events to less frequent, high magnitude events are geomorphically significant. However, trends in the different land use scenarios suggest that urbanization is shifting the geomorphic significance toward more frequent, lower magnitude events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modeling network‐scale sediment (dis)connectivity and its response to anthropic pressures provides a baseline understanding of river processes and sediment dynamics that can be used to forecast future hydro‐morphological changes in river basins. However, this requires a solid understanding of how a system is currently operating, and how it operated in the past. We present the basin‐scale, dynamic sediment connectivity model D‐CASCADE, which combines concepts of network modeling with empirical sediment transport formulas to quantify spatiotemporal sediment (dis)connectivity in river networks. D‐CASCADE accounts for multiple factors affecting sediment transport, such as spatiotemporal variations in hydrological regime, different sediment grain sizes, sediment entrainment and deposition. Add‐ons are included in D‐CASCADE to model local changes in river geomorphology driven by sediment‐induced variations in features such as channel width. We apply D‐CASCADE to the well‐documented Bega River catchment, NSW, Australia, where significant geomorphic changes to rivers have occurred post European colonization (after 1850s), including widespread channel erosion and sediment mobilization. The Bega catchment provides a useful case study to test D‐CASCADE, as original source data on the historical sediment budget are available. By introducing historic drivers of change in the correct chronological sequence, the D‐CASCADE model successfully reproduced the timing and magnitude of major phases of sediment transport and associated channel adjustments over the last two centuries. With this confidence, we then ran the model to test how well it performs at estimating future trajectories of basin‐scale sediment transport and sediment budgets at the river reach scale. We present a new numerical approach for simulating geomorphic and stratigraphic processes that combines open-channel flow with non-uniform sediment transport law and semi-empirical diffusive mass wasting. It is designed to facilitate modelling of surface processes across multiple space- and time-scales, and under a variety of environmental and tectonic conditions. The physics of open-channel flow is primarily based on an adapted Lagrangian formulation of shallow-water equations. The interaction between flow and surface geology is performed by a non-uniform total-load sediment transport law. Additional hillslope processes are simulated using a semi-empirical method based on a diffusion approach. In the implementation, the resolution of flow dynamics is made on a triangulated grid automatically mapped and adaptively remeshed over a regular orthogonal stratigraphic mesh. These new methods reduce computational time while preserving stability and accuracy of the physical solutions. In order to illustrate the potential of this method for landscape and sedimentary system modelling, we present a set of three generic experiments focusing on assessing the influence of contrasting erodibilities on the evolution of an active bedrock landscape. The modelled ridges morphometrics satisfy established relationships for drainage network geometry and slope distribution, and provide quantitative information on the relative impact of hillslope and channel processes, sediment discharge and alluviation. Our results suggest that contrasting erodibility can stimulate autogenic changes in erosion rate and influence the landscape morphology and preservation. This approach offers new opportunities to investigate joint landscape and sedimentary systems response to external perturbations. The possibility to define and track a large number of materials makes the implementation highly suited to model source-to-sink problems where material dispersion is the key question that needs to be addressed, such as natural resources exploration and basin analysis. CONCLUSIONS Despite the breadth and intensity of human impacts to lowland rivers it is essential that river managers have knowledge of fluvial dynamics in the context of historic and planned human impacts to rivers. Lowland rivers often have broad valleys and deltas characterized by multiple raised channel belts and distributaries separated by expansive flood basins. Lowland rivers are unique geomorphic and hydrologic settings that support distinctive environmental processes and a range of human activities. Study results raise important issues as regards management options for coastal draining lowland rivers along passive margins with broad lowland rivers undergoing high rates of sea level rise. In mountain environments, steep slopes and intense precipitation favour high rates of soil erosion and sediment delivery into rivers, which can cause major problems, such as agricultural soil loss, decreased water quality and excessive sedimentation. The understanding of cause-effect relationships between rainfall, runoff, sediment production and transport is therefore of primary importance to improve our ability to predict spatially-distributed erosion rates and sediment yields at the basin outlet.When measuring suspended sediment concentrations at the outlet of a river basin, a large variability is usually observed in the rating curve, i.e. the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) as a function of discharge (Q). The source of this scatter is generally attributed to the inherent stochasticity of the sediment production and transport processes involved along the sediment pathways in a catchment. In this study, we show that scatter in the SSC-Q relationship may also arise in fully deterministic modelling of catchment sediment production and transport by overland flow. For this purpose, we developed a hillslope and channel suspended sediment flow component in the spatially distributed hydrological model TOPKAPI-ETH. By applying the model to the Kleine Emme watershed (Switzerland), we explore how variability in the SSC-Q rating curve is affected by (a) rainfall variability in space, (b) surface erodibility distribution in space and (c) spatial connectivity of sediment sources to the channel network. We complement the analysis by investigating the sediment delivery ratios (SDRs) as a measure of the connectivity of the sediment sources to the channel network. We show that the variability in rainfall contributes to the scatter in the SSC-Q relation, because it activates localized sources of sediment production. Based on the model assumption that sediment discharge equals the transport capacity of overland flow, spatially variable surface erodibility introduces areas of localized increased sediment productivity and others of low transport capacity where sediment may be deposited. Overall, this results in a reduction of SSC variability at the outlet, due to a decreased sediment connectivity at the catchment scale. The SDR analysis supports this result, by showing a significantly lower sediment connectivity when spatially variable surface erodibility is considered, i.e. when the presence of sediment buffers is simulated. The analysis also shows that sediment connectivity increases in the downstream direction due to the absence of significant sediment sinks in the catchment. The upper part of the basin has a lower sediment connectivity than the tributaries, due to a Last Glacial Maximum landscape disconnected from the fluvial network. To summarize, we conclude that (1) spatially-distributed deterministic models of rainfall-runoff-erosion processes can generate large variability in SSC for a given discharge; (2) the spatial distribution of rainfall and the connectivity of localized sediment sources to the channel network are key to capture the scatter in the SSC-Q relation. Furthermore, our results show that the connectivity of sediment transport can vary significantly within a catchment with a diverse geomorphology and the location of buffers of sediment transport on hillslopes plays an important role in determining the global sediment connectivity. Changes in 137Cs export over time following clearcutting were investigated in a Japanese forested catchment affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident. A total of 13% of the catchment area was clear-cut 2 years after the accident. Annual suspended solids (SS) export at the catchment outlet increased 1.4 to 2.0 times after clearcutting; however, 137Cs export increased slightly (up to 1.1 times), corresponding to 0.21% to 0.30% of the 137Cs inventory in the catchment. The smaller change in 137Cs export than in SS export was due to a rapid decrease in the activity concentration following clearcutting. This decrease was likely caused by both natural attenuation and SS derived from sources with a low activity concentration in the clear-cut area. Monitoring of the sediment transport from hillslopes in small-scale experimental plots showed that the 137Cs yield in the skid trail was 3.6 to 21 times greater than those in clear-cut and unlogged forest floors. This significant 137Cs transport was due to greater soil erosion (by up to two orders of magnitude) along the skid trail, despite the lower activity concentration than those in the other plots. This indicates that while skid trails were involved in the rapid decrease of the activity concentration of SS, they were a potential source of the increased export of 137Cs and SS. Net 137Cs export increased by clearcutting (the export excluding the decrease accompanied by natural attenuation) was estimated to account for only 0.092% of the inventory in the catchment for 2.5 years. The activity of fallout radionuclides (7Be, 137Cs, and 210Pb) was measured on upland and floodplain soils and on suspended sediments to quantify sources of fine sediment and to estimate sediment transport distances in stream channels in the Yellowstone River basin. Samples were collected seven times during snowmelt and runoff at nine locations from the headwaters of Soda Butte Creek to Billings, Montana, a 423-km-long reach of channel. The inventory of radionuclides in soil increases with precipitation and is highest in the headwaters. The activity of radionuclides in suspended sediment decreases downstream, and more activity is observed earlier than later in the flood hydrograph. The radionuclide activity of sediment derived from erosion of upland soils differs from that derived from bank erosion. Fine suspended sediment has an intermediate radionuclide signature that is quantified in terms of the relative contribution of these two sources of fine sediment. At sites high in the drainage, soils contribute 50% to the suspended load and this value decreases to 11%–26% downstream. Fine sediment transport distances were calculated from the exponential decrease in radionuclide concentration below a point source. Transport distances increase from a few kilometers in the headwaters to hundreds of kilometers downstream. These estimates are consistent with transport distances estimated from the settling velocity of the particles and from the distribution of mine tailings downstream from a dam failure. The Atchafalaya River in south-central Louisiana is of geomorphic interest because of the large volumes of flow and sediment transported and its role as a major floodway for the lower Mississippi River, notwithstanding its potential to become an avulsion pathway at Old River. Since its origin in the sixteenth century, it has undergone many transformations and currently receives flow from the Red River and partial flow of the Mississippi River through multiple pathways. Flow increased progressively beginning in the mid-1800s and continued until concerns of diversion spurred placement of engineering structures to regulate flows at the juncture between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers in 1963. Prior studies, that looked at reaches or six to seven rangelines or cross sections on hydrographic surveys document areal, width, and depth increases in the uppermost 80 km (50 mi) of the Atchafalaya River from 1880 to 1974. This study assesses how channel geometry of the Atchafalaya River has changed with flow variations since the 1880s by evaluating instantaneous discharge measurements that document change at superior temporal resolution and differences in thalweg values from coupled modern hydrographic surveys which document change at better spatial resolution than prior works. While structures have regulated and limited flow into the Atchafalaya since 1963, the highest values of discharge, cross-sectional area, and width at Simmesport (upstream) follow river regulation. Associated geometry data at Simmesport and Morgan City (downstream) document that mean bed and thalweg elevations have risen. Comparison of thalweg elevations on hydrographic surveys from 1963 and 2006 show pronounced local variability in bed elevation change but also reaches dominated by degradation (including the Red River and uppermost section of the Atchafalaya) near the Old River diversion. Aggradation occurs in the lower Atchafalaya, a zone where along-channel lakes are filling, flow and sediment quantities are changing in part caused by the constructed Wax Lake Outlet, and deltas have been growing in Atchafalaya Bay. Findings are relevant to river engineering and flood management, especially navigation, and help in better understanding the evolution of large distributaries and the role of human impacts. A critical requirement for a successful river restoration project in a dynamic gravel bed river is that it be compatible with natural hydraulic and sediment transport processes operating at the reach scale. The potential for failure is greater at locations where the influence of natural processes is inconsistent with intended project function and performance. We present an approach using practical GIS, hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment transport analyses to identify locations where specific restoration project types have the greatest likelihood of working as intended because their function and design are matched with flooding and morphologic processes. The key premise is to identify whether a specific river analysis segment (length ~1-10 bankfull widths) within a longer reach is geomorphically active or inactive in the context of vertical and lateral stabilities, and hydrologically active for floodplain connectivity. Analyses involve empirical channel geometry relations, aerial photographic time series, LiDAR data, HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling, and a time-integrated sediment transport budget to evaluate trapping efficiency within each segment. The analysis segments are defined by HEC-RAS model cross sections. The results have been used effectively to identify feasible projects in a variety of alluvial gravel bed river reaches with lengths between 11 and 80 km and 2-year flood magnitudes between ~350 and 1330 m/s. Understanding river response to sediment pulses is a fundamental problem in geomorphic process studies, with myriad implications for river management. However, because large sediment pulses are rare and usually unanticipated, they are seldom studied at field scale. We examine fluvial response to a massive (~20 Mt) sediment pulse released by the largest dam removal globally, on the Elwha River, Washington, United States, in an 11‐year before‐after/control‐impact study of channel morphology and grain size. We test the hypothesis that for a given flow magnitude, greater geomorphic change occurs under sediment‐rich conditions than under sediment‐starved conditions. Channel response to flow forcing was significantly different during the sediment‐pulse peak, 1–2 years after dam removal began, than earlier or later. During peak sediment supply our hypothesis was supported; major geomorphic change occurred under low flows and unit stream power ≤60 W/m2. However, by 4–6 years after dam removal began, rates of geomorphic change and sensitivity to stream power had decreased substantially such that our hypothesis was no longer unequivocally supported. These findings are consistent with a two‐phase conceptual model of dam‐removal response, involving a transport‐limited state followed by a more supply‐limited state. From comparisons with other dam removals and natural sediment pulses, we infer that the longevity of sediment‐pulse signals in gravel‐bed rivers depends upon gradient, river discharge, valley morphology, and sediment grain size. Stream power associated with substantial geomorphic change varies with sediment supply, such that assigning a general threshold stream power to gravel‐bed rivers may be untenable. Abstract: Radar-revealed palaeodrainage systems are analyzed using Radarsat-1 data covering the Kufra Oasis and parts of southeastern Libya and northern Chad. The analysis shows that two mega fluvial systems exist to the south of the Kufra Oasis. Along the western one, a mappable polygonal fluvial unit covers 13,628km2 in area, with the entire watershed extending north beyond the borders of the present 347,160km2 study area. The eastern system covers 4321km2 in area and is morphologically similar to the Amazon’s Rio Negro, although the African channel is four times wider. The enormity of these features provides some explanation as to why continuous extraction of groundwater in the oasis and nearby circular irrigation farms is possible. Clearly, these mega fluvial systems formed at some time in the past when rain was plentiful over a protracted time period. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Complex relationships between stream functions and processes make evaluation of stream modification projects difficult. Informed by vague objectives and minimal monitoring data, post-construction project evaluations can often be a subjective attribution of success or failure. This article provides a simple framework to rapidly describe the degree of damage in stream modification projects performed in constrained settings. Based on widely accepted evaluations of physical habitat quality and stream stability, the damage states framework describes a continuum of damage in multiple categories that relate natural stream functions to the often desired state of static equilibrium. Given that channel form is closely related to stream function, it follows that changes to the channel form result in changes in function. The damage states focus on damage to flow hydraulics, sediment transport and channel equilibrium, hydraulic, and geomorphic parameters that describe basic stream functioning and support higher level functions in the modified channel. This progress report on the discipline of fluvial geomorphology reviews 134 papers, 112 of which were published in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms (ESPL) during the calendar years of 2008 and 2009. It continues where the last report for 2006 and 2007 (Stott, 2010) ended. Papers are again grouped by themes to cover 10 subdisciplines within the subject area. The themes were chosen by classifying all geomorphological articles published in ESPL for the same period, of which 38% were within the subject area of fluvial geomorphology. Themes (in order of number contributing to the total) were: fluvial sediment transport; soil erosion and control; modelling the fluvial environment; river management, restoration and effects of vegetation on fluvial systems; gully and hillslope sediment transfer; river regulation, channel change and human influences; advances in methodology in fluvial geomorphology; fluvial hydraulics; fluvial chronology; and bank erosion in fluvial systems. The 2006–2007 and 2008–2009 periods are compared and it was found that broadly the same themes retained their popularity (in terms of numbers of papers published) as in the previous report for 2006–2007. 1. Rivers are subject to thresholds of several types that define significant changes in processes and morphology and delimit distinctive riverine landscapes and habitats. Thresholds are set by the conditions that govern river channel process and form, amongst which the most important are the flow regime, the quantity and calibre of sediment delivered to the channel, and the topographic setting (which determines the gradient of the channel). These factors determine the sediment transport regime and the character of alluvial deposits along the channel. 2. Changes occur systematically along the drainage system as flow, gradient and sediment character change, so a characteristic sequence of morphological and habitat types – hence of riverine landscapes – can be described from uplands to distal channels. The sequence is closely associated with stream competence to move sediment and with bank stability. 3. The paper proposes a first order classification of river channel and landscape types based on these factors. The riverine landscape is affected seasonally by flow thresholds, and further seasonal thresholds in northern rivers are conditioned by the ice regime. 4. It is important to understand geomorphic thresholds in rivers not only for the way they determine morphology and habitat, but because human activity can precipitate threshold crossings which change these features significantly, through either planned or inadvertent actions. Understanding how channel bed morphology affects flow conditions (and vice versa) is important for a wide range of fluvial processes and practical applications. We investigated interactions between bed roughness and flow velocity in a steep, glacier-fed mountain stream (Riedbach, Ct. Valais, Switzerland) with almost flume-tike boundary conditions. Bed gradient increases along the 1 km study reach by roughly 1 order of magnitude (S = 3-41 %), with a corresponding increase in streambed roughness, while flow discharge and width remain approximately constant due to the glacial runoff regime. Streambed roughness was characterized by semivariograms and standard deviations of point clouds derived from terrestrial laser scanning. Reach-averaged flow velocity was derived from dye tracer breakthrough curves measured by 10 fluorometers installed along the channel. Commonly used flow resistance approaches (Darcy-Weisbach equation and dimensionless hydraulic geometry) were used to relate the measured bulk velocity to bed characteristics. As a roughness measure, D84 yielded comparable results to more laborious measures derived from point clouds. Flow resistance behavior across this large range of steep slopes agreed with patterns established in previous studies for both lower-gradient and steep reaches, regardless of which roughness measures were used. We linked empirical critical shear stress approaches to the variable power equation for flow resistance to investigate the change of bed roughness with channel slope. This progress report on the discipline of fluvial geomorphology for the calendar years 2010–2011 extends the analysis carried out by Stott (2010, 2011) of papers published in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms (ESPL) during the calendar years 2006–2007 and 2008–2009 to include the period of 2010–2011. A total of 327 papers were published in the 30 issues of ESPL during the review period, up from 284 during 2006–2007 and 300 in 2008–2009. Of these papers, 175 (54%) were within the subject area of fluvial geomorphology, compared to 125 out of 284 (44%) in the 2006–2007 period, and 113 out of 297 (38%) in the 2008–2009 period. In comparing the three two-year periods covering 2006–2011, the numbers of papers in each of 10 subdisciplines within fluvial geomorphology (e.g. bank erosion, hydraulics, soil erosion) changed markedly. For example, river management, restoration and the effects of vegetation on fluvial systems changed from first in rank in 2006–2007 to tied in fourth place in 2008–2009 and eighth in 2010–2011. In contrast, the subdiscipline of soil erosion was consistently the second-ranked topic in each of the three two-year periods. Following the analysis of patterns of publications in ESPL, selected papers from each of the 10 subdisciplines are reviewed. The articles discussed were selected by searching using keywords from the 10 subdisciplines using http://scholar.google.co.uk, then selecting a relevant journal article from the first 10 hits returned. Over the past 10 years the Rosgen classification system and its associated methods of ‘natural channel design’ have become synonymous to some with the term ‘stream restoration’ and the science of fluvial geomorphology. Since the mid 1990s, this classification approach has become widely adopted by governmental agencies, particularly those funding restoration projects. The purposes of this article are to present a critical review, highlight inconsistencies and identify technical problems of Rosgen's ‘natural channel design’ approach to stream restoration. This paper's primary thesis is that alluvial streams are open systems that adjust to altered inputs of energy and materials, and that a form-based system largely ignores this critical component. Problems with the use of the classification are encountered with identifying bankfull dimensions, particularly in incising channels and with the mixing of bed and bank sediment into a single population. Its use for engineering design and restoration may be flawed by ignoring some processes governed by force and resistance, and the imbalance between sediment supply and transporting power in unstable systems. An example of how C5 channels composed of different bank sediments adjust differently and to different equilibrium morphologies in response to an identical disturbance is shown. This contradicts the fundamental underpinning of ‘natural channel design’ and the ‘reference-reach approach.’ The Rosgen classification is probably best applied as a communication tool to describe channel form but, in combination with ‘natural channel design’ techniques, are not diagnostic of how to mitigate channel instability or predict equilibrium morphologies. For this, physically based, mechanistic approaches that rely on quantifying the driving and resisting forces that control active processes and ultimate channel morphology are better suited as the physics of erosion, transport, and deposition are the same regardless of the hydro-physiographic province or stream type because of the uniformity of physical laws. Amplified warming of high latitudes and rapid thaw of frozen ground threaten permafrost carbon stocks. The presence of permafrost modulates water infiltration and flow, as well as sediment transport, on soil-mantled slopes, influencing the balance of advective fluvial processes to diffusive processes on hillslopes in ways that are different from temperate settings. These processes that shape permafrost landscapes also impact the carbon stored on soil-mantled hillslopes via temperature, saturation, and slope stability such that carbon stocks and landscape morphometry should be closely linked. We studied >69,000 headwater basins between 25° and 90 °N to determine whether the thermal state of the soil sets the balance between hillslope (diffusive) and fluvial (advective) erosion processes, as evidenced by the density of the channel networks (i.e., drainage density) and the proportion of convex to concave topography (hillslopes and river valleys, respectively). Watersheds within permafrost regions have lower drainage densities than regions without permafrost, regardless of watershed glacial history, mean annual precipitation, and relief. We find evidence that advective fluvial processes are inhibited in permafrost landscapes compared to their temperate counterparts. Frozen soils likely inhibit channel development, and we predict that climate warming will lower incision thresholds to promote growth of the channel network in permafrost landscapes. By demonstrating how the balance of advective versus diffusive processes might shift with future warming, we gain insight into the mechanisms that shift these landscapes from sequestering to exporting carbon. The article evaluates recession rates of waterfalls in post-volcanic fluvial systems around Aso volcano in southwestern Japan using an empirical approach. It states that the estimated recession rates are validated through examination of duration and distance of their recession. According to the article, the contrast between the highly dissected landforms downstream of the present waterfalls and the gentle landscapes upstream of the waterfalls signifies that the rapid recession of the waterfalls is the main cause of post-eruptive fluvial erosion into ignimbrites.

Relationships between the surface area and age of alluvial deposits were used to estimate the residence time of alluvium in the 2205 km² Waipaoa River basin, New Zealand. The contemporary Waipaoa River is an efficient transporter of sediment to the continental shelf, but the basin has been characterized by rapid channel and valley aggradation in the historic period, and by extensive mid- to late Holocene alluvial storage in the lower reaches. The area-weighted mean age of alluvial deposits in the lower part of the river basin is ∼4400 yr. These deposits comprise terrace remnants isolated by downcutting, and Holocene to Recent sediments that are potentially remobilizable by the modern river. Even though the amount of storage is small relative to downstream transport, the majority of the potentially remobilizable alluvium is likely to remain in storage for >100 yr, and its half-life (time for 50 per cent removal) is >2000 yr. Within the confines of the floodplain, the apparent 'loss' of older deposits is due primarily to burial, but losses of the most recent deposits are due almost entirely to remobilization (30-40 per cent), with the remainder preserved in the alluvial record for at least 104 yr. This work presents FLUNETS (FLUvial NETwork Sorting tool), a new MATLAB-based tool designed for channel network ordering by Horton and Hack hierarchies. Differently to Strahler and Shreve hierarchies, Hack and Horton orderings allow organizing a drainage network in a hierarchy, identifying the parent segment over the child segment, giving as a result a network where the value of a river remains unchanged from the mouth upstream to the headwater. The novelty of FLUNETS is that it allows the user to choose the hierarchy attribute. Therefore, a fluvial network can be ordered by distance to the mouth or by accumulation upstream. In addition, FLUNETS offers a wide set of optional parameters, which turns it into a friendly tool to attain a highly tailored ordered fluvial network. Constraining past variations in rates of erosion remains a key challenge in geomorphology, as estimates of erosion rate on different timescales must be bridged. The Late Pleistocene to Holocene represents a key timescale for studying landscape transience, as climatic change, increasing anthropogenic activity, and/or tectonic activity changed the rate of surface processes in many landscapes. Few chronometers are suitable for studying surface processes and landscape transience on these timescales, but, although not yet widely used, in situ 14C holds much promise due to its appropriate half-life of 5.7 kyr. Furthermore, by pairing in situ 14C with a stable or longer-lived nuclide, such as 10Be, 21Ne or 26Al, it is possible to compare surface process rates on distinctly different timescales. In this paper, we explore how these paired chronometers can be used to study landscape transience in non-glacial landscapes on Late Pleistocene to Holocene timescales. Indeed, we find that paired measurements of in situ 14C and a long-lived cosmogenic nuclide (CN) in samples from eroding landscapes enable the detection of changes in erosion rate during the Late Pleistocene to Holocene, if the increase or decrease in erosion rate was larger than a factor of two, and the landscape is eroding at rates that are typical for fluvial landscapes (5–500 mm/kyr). Similarly, detecting changes in catchment-wide denudation rates using paired CN measurements in stream-sediment samples is also possible in catchments with suitable conditions, such as short sediment transport times, minimal erosion from deep-seated mass movement, etc. (von Blanckenburg, 2006). Studying fluvial dynamics and environments, GIS-based analyses are of fundamental importance to evaluate the network geometry and possible anomalies, and can be particularly useful to estimate modifications in processes and erosion rates. The aim of this paper is to estimate short-term erosion rates attributable to fluvial processes in two sample catchment sub-basins of the Marecchia river valley, by conducting quantitative morphometric analyses in order to calculate various descriptive parameters of the hierarchisation of the river networks and the mean turbid transport of streams (Tu). Sediment yield transported by streams can in fact partially express the amount of erosional processes acting within the drainage basin. The study area includes two sub-basins of the Marecchia valley (Senatello river, 49 km2 and Mazzocco river, 47 km2), chosen because of their similar extent and of the different location in the major catchment basin. Starting from geomorphological maps of the two river basins, the Tu parameter has been calculated and converted in short-term rate (average value 0.21 mm/year). Moreover, the comparison of these short-term mean data with the uplift rates calculated on a regional scale (0.41 ± 0.26 mm/year) in the Marecchia valley confirms that the northern Apennines may represent a non-steady state system. • Overlapping crater populations constrain the total era of martian valley formation. • Martian valleys may have formed intermittently over hundreds of millions of years. • Long-term erosion rates would have been similar to the modern Atacama Desert. A number of studies have constrained the cessation of martian valley network activity to around the Noachian-Hesperian boundary, but the total time period over which these features formed remains poorly constrained. Most attempts to ascertain valley network formative timescales rely on an intermittency factor that varies widely for terrestrial rivers and is unknown for Mars. In this contribution, superposition relationships are used to identify crater populations that pre- and postdate valley network incision, resulting in maximum cumulative valley formation times of ∼108 years. These timescales correspond with long-term erosion rates of ∼0.25 m/Myr, similar to those calculated for the Middle to Late Noachian as well as the central Atacama Desert since the Late Miocene. Assuming sediment transport rates previously calculated for other martian valley networks, this implies a minimum fluvial intermittency of ∼10−5, several orders of magnitude lower than modern day Earth rivers but similar to values independently calculated for some martian fluvial deposits. This low intermittency suggests that martian valley incision may have been significantly hindered by erosion into existing bedrock or by boulder armoring of the valley floor. Alternatively, unlike river valleys on Earth, runoff events driving martian valley network activity may have been non-seasonal, Milankovitch-like cycles, with long eras of quiescence between periods of intensified fluvial activity. Bank erosion frequently occurs in the Lower Yellow River (LYR), playing an important role in the evolution of this braided river. A two-dimensional (2D) composite model is developed herein that consists of a depth-averaged 2D flow and sediment transport submodel and a bank-erosion submodel. The model incorporates a new technique for updating bank geometry during either degradational or aggradational bed evolution, allowing the two submodels to be closely combined. Using the model, the fluvial processes in the braided reach of the LYR between Huayuankou and Laitongzhai are simulated, and the calculated results generally agree with the field measurements, including the water-surface elevation, variation of water-surface width, and variations of cross-sectional profiles. The calculated average water-surface elevation in the study reach was 0.09 m greater than the observed initial value, and the calculated mean bed elevation for six cross sections was 0.11 m lower than the observed value after 24 days. These errors are attributed to the large variability of flow and sediment transport processes. Sensitivity tests of three groups of parameters are conducted, and these groups of parameters are related to flow and sediment transport, bank erosion, and model application, respectively. Analysis results of parameter sensitivity tests indicate that bank erodibility coefficient and critical shear stress for bank material are sensitive to the simulated bank erosion process. The lateral erosion distance at Huayuankou will increase by 19% as the value of bank erodibility coefficient changes from 0.1 to 0.3, and it will decrease by 57% as the value of critical shear stress for bank increases from 0.6 to 1.2 N/m2. Limited changes of other parameters have relatively small effects on the simulated results for this reach, and the maximum change extent of calculated results is less than 5%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the predicted impacts of future climate on hydrology, morphological changes to river channels are expected. Quantifying the magnitudes and rates of future channel change is important for sustainable river channel management. To date, reviews of simulation approaches for investigating river channels and the modelling of environmental change impacts on channel form and process have focused on contemporary process or palaeo perspectives. Hence, herein we review numerical modelling approaches available for reach-scale simulation of future river channels and the predicted in-channel hydro- and morphodynamic changes modelled. We found that despite their widespread availability, hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and cellular models have yet to be used routinely in future in-channel simulations, with cellular models in particular under-represented. Our review shows that predictions of within-channel changes vary greatly between hydro-climatic regions and under contrasting climate change scenarios, mainly due to varying input discharge scenarios; however, increased sediment transport and flood risk are usually predicted. Key challenges in simulating future channel change include representations of external forcing conditions, adequate temporal and spatial scales, transport equations, changing channel materials and lateral erosion; calibration and validation; simulation chains with multiple models; and identification of feedback systems and non-linearity. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, models with increasing complexity have recently been developed and so there is increasing potential in their application. One-dimensional hydro- and morphodynamic simulations, and cellular models, can be modified to reflect the requirements of future representations, such as grain size properties, whilst there is also now an increasing capability to include a greater quantity of external forcing conditions. Some studies, however, have demonstrated the need to develop two-dimensional models for application in centennial-scale studies. We recommend that a wider range of scenarios and the combined effects of multiple external forcing factors should be included, whilst studies are also needed from more hydrologically diverse reaches. Uranium (U) isotopes can be used to estimate the comminution age of sediments , i.e. the time elapsed from sediment production on continents, via weathering and physical erosion, to deposition in the sedimentary record. The calculation of this comminution age is based on measured (234U/238U) activity ratios in river sediments, and inferred time-dependent recoil effect, which leads to the preferential release of 234U from mineral lattices during erosion processes. In this study, we report on a large-scale (234U/238U) investigation of modern river sediments worldwide, with the aim to determine the extent to which parameters such as grain size, lithology, weathering, climate and geomorphology may influence the distribution of U isotopes in fine-grained sediments. Our extensive dataset (N = 64) includes U isotopic measurements for many of the world's largest rivers, but also rivers draining particular climatic and geological settings. Our results indicate that sediments collected from river basins draining mostly igneous, metamorphic or volcanic rocks often display (234U/238U) ratios > 1, with clay-size fractions (<4 µm) being less depleted in 234U (higher 234U/238U) than corresponding silt-size fractions (4–63 µm). In contrast, sediments derived from multi-lithological basins or draining sedimentary rocks are typically characterized by (234U/238U) ratios <1, with clays generally exhibiting more depleted 234U signatures than silts. Taken together, these observations suggest that the formation of secondary clay minerals in soils from basins draining mostly igneous, metamorphic is accompanied by partial incorporation by recoil injection of 234U initially released during weathering processes, possibly from U-rich minerals, such as sphene or apatite. Instead, in multi-lithological catchments draining sedimentary rocks, we propose that the erosion of recycled sediments having experienced several cycles of weathering, possibly over glacial-interglacial timescales, could explain the much lower (234U/238U) ratios observed in clay-size fractions. While no direct relationships can be identified between sediment (234U/238U) ratios and lithology, weathering intensity, climatic or geomorphic parameters in corresponding river basins, we show that the catchment size probably plays an important role in controlling the distribution of (234U/238U) in river sediments, through its direct influence on the sediment residence time. Finally, a multiple regression analysis of our data, combining various environmental parameters for the lithology, climate and geomorphology of studied river basins, indicates predicted (234U/238U) values that are very similar to measured values (with R2 ∼ 0.8). This finding provides further support for the usefulness of (234U/238U) ratios in the sedimentary record for reconstructing past landscape changes and their effect on sediment transport and residence time in river basins. Current global warming projections suggest a possible increase in wildfire and drought, augmenting the need to understand how drought following wildfire affects the recovery of stream channels in relation to sediment dynamics. We investigated post-wildfire geomorphic responses caused by storms during a prolonged drought following the 2013 Springs Fire in southern California (USA), using multi-temporal terrestrial laser scanning and detailed field measurements. After the fire, a dry-season dry-ravel sediment pulse contributed sand and small gravel to hillslope-channel margins in Big Sycamore Creek and its tributaries. A small storm in WY 2014 generated sufficient flow to mobilize a portion of the sediment derived from the dry-ravel pulse and deposited the fine sediment in the channel, totaling ~0.60 m3/m of volume per unit length of channel. The sediment deposit buried step-pool habitat structure and reduced roughness by over 90%. These changes altered sediment transport characteristics of the bed material present before and after the storm; the ratio of available to critical shear stress ( τo /τc) increased by five times. Storms during WY 2015 contributed additional fine sediment from tributaries and lower hillslopes and hyperconcentrated flow transported and deposited additional sediment in the channel. Together these sources delivered sediment on the order of six times that in 2014, further increasing τo/ τc. These storms during multi-year drought following wildfire transformed channel dynamics. The increased sediment transport capacity persisted during the drought period characterized by the longer residence time of relatively fine-grained post-fire channel sedimentation. This contrasts with wetter years, when post-fire sediment is transported from the fluvial system during the same season as the post-fire sediment pulse. Results of this short-term study highlight the complex and substantial effects of multi-year drought on geomorphic responses following wildfire. Abstract: This paper uses a multifaceted remote sensing and morphometric approach to investigate if the surface of subcatchments in the Parana Valles area of Mars (20–30°S, 0–20°W) is reflective of hydrology and sediment transport by water. Using digital elevation model (DEM) data obtained from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), three nested subcatchments were examined using a suite of terrestrial geomorphic and hydrologic statistics to determine if their shape and form lies within the known range of fluvial catchment properties on Earth. Further, an examination of statistical accuracy via an innovative pixel-by-pixel solution of two statistics established that despite mineralogical homogeneity confirmed by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) spectral survey, erosion processes were likely to be variable across the study site. The DEM-based methods outlined here can be employed at other sites to investigate geomorphic properties and attributes of the Martian surface. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
