Radiological equipment must be assessed against criteria for acceptability to ensure that it meets the minimum standards for patient safety. This assessment is typically led by a medical physicist with input from radiology staff and the equipment supplier. Equipment that does not meet the criteria requires action and may be suspended from clinical use. European Commission report RP 91 will be revised and replaced as RP 162. It has been drawn up to aid medical physicists with the assessment process and provide guidance on suspension levels. This paper details several cases where the criteria in the proposed RP 162 were applied in general radiography, computed radiography, digital radiography and fluoroscopy. The factors considered by the medical physicist and the outcome of each case are presented. The proposed RP 162 report improves on its predecessor and provides a robust set of criteria for ensuring that patient safety within the EU medical exposures framework is optimised.

Objectives: To perform an online survey about the use of magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) in clinical practice.Methods: We administered an online survey to all 1,550 members of the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) about MRA asking ten different questions. Subgroup analysis was performed between general and orthopaedic hospitals using χ2 and Mann-Whitney U statistics.Results: One-hundred forty-eight answers were included (148/1,550, 9.5% of ESSR members). A median of 3,000 (interquartile range: 1,567.5-5,324.5) musculoskeletal MR examinations and a median of 125.5 MRAs (50.75-249) per institution were performed in 2016. Ratio between MRA and musculoskeletal MR was 4.7% (1.6%-9.0%). Using MRA, the most investigated joint was the shoulder followed by the hip (96.6%). The most common indications were the evaluation of instability, labrum, and rotator cuff (85.1%). Fluoroscopy represented the preferred injection guidance. A self-prepared mixture of Gadolinium/saline is preferred in general hospitals, while pre-diluted Gadolinium-based syringes are mainly used in orthopaedic hospitals (P=.010). The number of MRA performed at orthopaedic hospitals (284;83.75-449.50) was higher (P=.006) than that performed at general hospitals (115.50;44.75-234.25).Conclusions: One out of twenty MR examinations is a MRA, with higher prevalence in orthopaedic hospitals. The shoulder and the hip are the most investigated joints. In the last decades, one of the most ordinary challenges that countries of Southern Europe face is the management of wastes and by-products of olive oil production activities which are disposed into the environment and contribute to the enhancement of major ecological issues due to their organic loads. Exploitation of these olive residues wastes by thermochemical treatment has been proved a very popular way to generate a wide range of valuable products. In this concept, this work studies the thermal decomposition process of olive stone samples using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data obtained under inert atmosphere at various heating rates (5–20 °C) and their kinetic analysis conducted via model-free and model fitting methods. The changes in the crystal structure for various pyrolysis temperatures of the sample were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), while the morphological characteristics were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that the thermal behavior of olive stone sample was a typical one for a lignocellulosic material with the first mass loss being attributed to moisture removal while the following stages were assigned to lignocellulosic degradation substances. Vyazovkin (VYA) isoconversional method was performed to estimate effective activation energy (Ea) and the pre-exponential factor, while using a model fitting method the best fitting results were obtained by a three independent parallel reactions model, obeying the nth order with Fn code and described by the f(α) = (1 − α)n equation. Background The primary goal of the CLARYS study is to assess the protection against rebleeding when treating ruptured bifurcation aneurysms with the Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device. Methods The CLARYS study is a prospective, multicenter study conducted in 13 European centers. Patients with ruptured bifurcation aneurysms were consecutively included between February 2016 and September 2017. The primary endpoint was defined as the rebleeding rate of the target aneurysm treated with the WEB within 30 days postprocedure. Secondary endpoints included periprocedural and postprocedural adverse events, total procedure and fluoroscopy times, and modified Rankin Scale score at 1 month and 1 year. Results Sixty patients with 60 ruptured bifurcation aneurysms to be treated with the WEB were included. A WEB device was successfully implanted in 93.3%. The rebleeding rate at 1 month and 1 year was 0%. The mean fluoroscopy time was 27.0 min. Twenty-three periprocedural complications were observed in 18 patients and resolved without sequelae in 16 patients. Two of these complications were attributed to the procedure and/or the use of the WEB, leading to a procedure/device-related intraoperative complication rate of 3.3%. Overall mortality at 1 month and 1 year was 1.7% and 3.8%, respectively and overall morbidity at 1 month and 1 year was 15% and 9.6%, respectively. WEB-related 1-month and 1-year morbidity and mortality was 0%. Conclusions The interim results of CLARYS show that the endovascular treatment of ruptured bifurcation aneurysms with the WEB is safe and effective and, in particular, provides effective protection against rebleeding. Patient doses for a few common fluoroscopy-guided procedures in interventional radiology (IR) (excluding cardiology) were collected from a few radiological departments in 13 European countries. The major aim was to evaluate patient doses for the basis of the reference levels. In total, data for 20 procedures for about 1300 patients were collected. There were many-fold variations in the number of IR equipment and procedures per population, in the entrance dose rates, and in the patient dose data (total dose area product or DAP, fluoroscopy time and number of frames). There was no clear correlation between the total DAP and entrance dose rate, or between the total DAP and fluoroscopy time, indicating that a number of parameters affect the differences. Because of the limited number of patients, preliminary reference levels were proposed only for a few procedures. There is a need to improve the optimisation of IR procedures and their definitions and grouping, in order to account for their different complexities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
