Five new derivatives were obtained utilizing 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-chloride) in combination with furfurylamine, adamantylamine, aminohippuric acid, phenylalanine, and dehydroabietylamine. These derivatives were then subjected to a comparative analysis of their physical, chemical, and certain biological properties alongside two analogous and known compounds derived from the glycine and 4-amino-TEMPO free radical. Background: New amino derivatives of NBD type are of high interest due to their strong fluorescence, while compounds containing a disulphide moiety are of high interest in nano-chemistry due to their easiness of attaching to noble nanoparticles. Therefore, in this work a new fluorescent derivative of NBD and cystamine was obtained. Methods: The reaction between cystamine and NBD-chloride occurs straightforwardly, and the isolated new compound was characterized by IR, UV-Vis, fluorescence, 1H- and 13C-NMR, MS, etc. Results: Structural analysis confirmed the proposed structure and highlighted the fluorescence behavior. Starting from dansyl-chloride, in reaction with 1,1-diphenylhydrazine and methoxyamine, two new fluorescent derivatives 1 and 2 were obtained and characterized by NMR, IR, UV-Vis, HR-MS, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The single-crystal X-ray structure was obtained for compound 2. Both compounds generate free radicals by oxidation, as demonstrated by ESR spectroscopy. Compound 1 generates the corresponding hydrazyl-persistent free radical, evidenced directly by ESR spectroscopy, while compound 2 generates in the first instance the methoxyaminyl short-lived free radical, which decomposes rapidly with the formation of the methoxy radical, evidenced by the ESR spin-trapping technique. Abstract: Acid–base interactions between amino-silica and carboxyl-gold protected nanoparticles, functionalized or not with free stable radicals or fluorescent moieties, were studied by ESR, fluorescence, and TEM. While those nanoparticles are stable in solution, mixing them induces aggregation, due to acid–base interactions; addition of a base or an acid redissolves them. By ESR, strong spin–spin interactions were noticed; by fluorescence, only small differences may be observed, while by TEM, it was noticed that gold nanoparticles are distributed evenly on the surface of the silica nanoparticles.
