Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers exhibit great photocatalytic performances and tunabilities. By using first-principles simulations based on density functional theory, we demonstrate here that external electric bias can be employed to further improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiencies of the six AB2 (A = Mo, W and B = S, Se, Te) TMDC monolayers since these are influenced by their piezoelectric response. In particular, when subjected to a proper amount of electrically induced tensile biaxial strain, most TMDC monolayers turn into potentially ideal photocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The beneficial effects of introducing tensile biaxial strain on the TMDC monolayers are not limited to the reduction of the band gap and proper adjustment of the band edge positions; the concomitant hydrogen adsorption free energies are also modified in such a way that the HER reaction is noticeably favored.

Electronic doping is a promising approach to modulating the optoelectronic properties of semiconductors, but its effect on optoelectronic behaviors of halide perovskites remains controversial. Here, we comprehensively investigate the impact of Pb substitution in n-type CsPbIBr2 perovskite by utilizing monovalent Ag, divalent Zn, and trivalent Sb. Our findings reveal that the trap densities in doped CsPbIBr2 films are in the order of Ag < Zn < Sb. Compared with the pristine CsPbIBr2, the Ag-doped perovskite features a significantly reduced phase separation; however, the Sb doping accelerates halide segregation, and Zn exerts a negligible influence. The p-doping effect from monovalent Ag can shift the Fermi level of CsPbIBr2 toward the intrinsic midgap, which helps prevent the formation of ionic defects and reduce the migration of halide ions in the perovskite lattice. Through combing the density functional theory simulation, this study discloses the correlation between valence-controlled metal doping and phase segregation, providing a guideline for judiciously doping mixed-halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications.

Metallic 1T-phase MoS2 exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance than natural 2H-phase MoS2 owing to its higher electrical conductivity and abundance of active sites. However, the reported 1T-MoS2 catalysts usually suffer from extreme instability, which results in quick phase transformation at ambient conditions. Herein, we present a facile approach to engineer the phase of MoS2 by introducing intercalated hydrazine. Interestingly, the as-synthesized 1T-dominant MoS2 sample demonstrates excellent ambient stability without noticeable degradation for 3 months. Additionally, the 1T-dominant MoS2 exhibits superior electrical conductivity (~700 times higher than that of 2H-MoS2) and improved electrochemical catalytic performance (current density ~12 times larger than that of 2H-MoS2 at an overpotential of 300 mV vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE). Through experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, we conclude that the stabilization of the metallic phase could be attributed to the electron donation from hydrazine molecules to the adjacent Mo atoms. The phase control strategy in this work provides a guideline to develop other highly efficient and stable two-dimensional (2D) electrocatalysts.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) for bioelectronic applications require the design of conjugated polymers that are stable in aqueous environments and afford high energy efficiency and good performance in OECTs. Polymers based on poly(ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) are promising in this area due to their low oxidation potential and reversible redox, but they often require cross-linking to prevent dissolution and yield OECTs operating in the less efficient depletion mode. In this work, a new conjugated polymer PEDOT-Phos is presented, which combines a conjugated poly(ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) backbone with alkyl-protected phosphonate groups. PEDOT-Phos exhibits a low oxidation onset potential (-0.157 V vs Ag/AgCl) and its nanoporous morphology affords it a high volumetric capacitance (282 ± 62 F cm–3). Without any cross-linking, additives, or post-treatment, PEDOT-Phos can be used in aqueous OECTs with efficient accumulation mode operation, long-term stability when immersed in aqueous media, low threshold voltages (-0.161 ± 0.005 V), good transconductances (9.3 ± 1.8 mS), and ON/OFF current ratios (618 ± 54) comparable to other PEDOT-based materials in OECTs. These results highlight the great promise of PEDOT-Phos as a stand-alone channel material for energy-efficient, bioelectronic devices.

Hydrogen is a promising fossil-fuel alternative fuel owing to its environmentally neutral emissions and high energy density. However, the need for purified water and external power are critical hindrances to the implementation of hydrogen production. The present work demonstrates the potential to overcome these shortcomings through piezo-photocatalysis of seawater using defective BaTiO3–x (BTO) nanoparticles. This material was made piezoelectrically active by a straightforward annealing process under different atmospheres, including O2, N2, Ar, or H2, the latter of which caused Ti4+ ¿ Ti(4–x)+ multiple reductions and structural distortions that stabilize piezoelectric tetragonal domains. A suite of experimental techniques was employed to reveal the effects of reduction on the energy band structure. A substantial piezoelectric effect and the presence of self-polarization were confirmed by piezoresponse force microscopy, while simulation work clarified the role of vibrations on band bending deriving from the self-polarization. The hydrogen evolution through photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, and piezo-photocatalysis over the defective BaTiO3–x nanoparticles was characterized with deionized (DI) water, simulated seawater, and natural seawater. A promising HER with a rate of 132.4 µmol/g/h was achieved using DI water through piezo-photocatalysis without a cocatalyst. In contrast, a substantial HER rate of 48.7 µmol/g/h was obtained for natural seawater, despite the deleterious impact of dissolved ions. The present work offers new perspectives for large-scale green H2 production using abundant natural resources with a conventional piezoelectric material that is readily available but still affected by the ions dissolved in seawater.

The formation of coamorphous mixtures of pharmaceuticals is an interesting strategy to improve the solubility and bioavailability of drugs, while at the same time enhancing the kinetic stability of the resulting binary glass and allowing the simultaneous administration of two active principles. In this contribution, we describe kinetically stable amorphous binary mixtures of two commercial active pharmaceutical ingredients, diazepam and nordazepam, of which the latter, besides being administered as a drug on its own, is also the main active metabolite of the other in the human body. We report the eutectic equilibrium-phase diagram of the binary mixture, which is found to be characterized by an experimental eutectic composition of 0.18 molar fraction of nordazepam, with a eutectic melting point of Te = 395.4 ± 1.2 K. The two compounds are barely miscible in the crystalline phase. The mechanically obtained mixtures were melted and supercooled to study the glass-transition and molecular-relaxation dynamics of amorphous mixtures at the corresponding concentration. The glass-transition temperature was always higher than room temperature and varied linearly with composition. The Te was lower than the onset of thermal decomposition of either compound (pure nordazepam decomposes upon melting and pure diazepam well above its melting point), thus implying that the eutectic liquid and glass can be obtained without any degradation of the drugs. The eutectic glass was kinetically stable against crystallization for at least a few months. The relaxation processes of the amorphous mixtures were studied by dielectric spectroscopy, which provided evidence for a single structural (α) relaxation, a single Johari–Goldstein (β) relaxation, and a ring-inversion conformational relaxation of the diazepinic ring, occurring on the same timescale in both drugs. We further characterized both the binary mixtures and pure compounds by FTIR spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations to analyze intermolecular interactions. The DFT calculations confirm the presence of strong attractive forces within the heteromolecular dimer, leading to large dimer interaction energies of the order of −0.1 eV.

Ni-rich layered oxides, such as LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811), are promising cathode materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. However, the relatively high reactivity of Ni in NCM811 cathodes results in severe capacity fading originating from the undesired side reactions that occur at the cathode-electrolyte interface during prolonged cycling. Therefore, the trade-off between high capacity and long cycle life can obstruct the commercialization process of Ni-rich cathodes in modern lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In addition, high sensitivity toward air upon storage greatly limits the commercial application. Herein, a facile surface modification strategy is introduced to enhance the cycling and in-air storage stability of NCM811. The NCM811 with a uniform SrTiO3 (STO) nano-coating layer exhibited outstanding electrochemical performances that could deliver a high discharge capacity of 173.5 mAh·g-1 after 200 cycles under 1C with a capacity retention of 90%. In contrast, the uncoated NCM811 only provided 65% capacity retention of 130.8 mAh·g-1 under the same conditions. Structural evolution analysis suggested that the STO coating acted as a buffer layer to suppress the dissolution of transition metal ions caused by the HF attack from the electrolyte and promote the lithium diffusion during the charge–discharge process. In addition, the constructed STO layer prevented the exposure of NCM811 to H2O and CO2 and thus effectively improved the in-air storage stability. This work offers an effective way to enhance the performance stability of Ni-rich oxides for high-performance cathodes of lithium-ion batteries.

The role of local chemical environments in the electron energy loss spectra of complex multiferroic oxides was studied using computational and experimental techniques. The evolution of the O K-edge across an interface between bismuth ferrite (BFO) and lanthanum strontium manganate (LSMO) was considered through spectral averaging over crystallographically equivalent positions to capture the periodicity of the local O environments. Computational techniques were used to investigate the contribution of individual atomic environments to the overall spectrum, and the role of doping and strain was considered. Chemical variation, even at the low level, was found to have a major impact on the spectral features, whereas strain only induced a small chemical shift to the edge onset energy. Through a combination of these methods, it was possible to explain experimentally observed effects such as spectral flattening near the interface as the combination of spectral responses from multiple local atomic environments.

Perovskite oxides are regarded as promising electrocatalysts for water splitting due to their cost-effectiveness, high efficiency and durability in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Despite these advantages, a fundamental understanding of how critical structural parameters of perovskite electrocatalysts influence their activity and stability is lacking. Here, we investigate the impact of structural defects on OER performance for representative LaNiO3 perovskite electrocatalysts. Hydrogen reduction of 700¿°C calcined LaNiO3 induces a high density of surface oxygen vacancies, and confers significantly enhanced OER activity and stability compared to unreduced LaNiO3; the former exhibit a low onset overpotential of 380 mV at 10 mA¿cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 70.8 mV¿dec-1. Oxygen vacancy formation is accompanied by mixed Ni2+/Ni3+ valence states, which quantum-chemical DFT calculations reveal modify the perovskite electronic structure. Further, it reveals that the formation of oxygen vacancies is thermodynamically more favourable on the surface than in the bulk; it increases the electronic conductivity of reduced LaNiO3 in accordance with the enhanced OER activity that is observed.

Lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LRMO) are regarded as promising cathode materials for powering electric applications due to their high capacity (250 mAh g–1) and energy density (~900 Wh kg–1). However, poor cycle stability and capacity fading have impeded the commercialization of this family of materials as battery components. Surface modification based on coating has proven successful in mitigating some of these problems, but a microscopic understanding of how such improvements are attained is still lacking, thus impeding systematic and rational design of LRMO-based cathodes. In this work, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out to fill out such a knowledge gap and to propose a promising LRMO-coating material. It is found that SrTiO3 (STO), an archetypal and highly stable oxide perovskite, represents an excellent coating material for Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 (LNMO), a prototypical member of the LRMO family. An accomplished atomistic model is constructed to theoretically estimate the structural, electronic, oxygen vacancy formation energy, and lithium-transport properties of the LNMO/STO interface system, thus providing insightful comparisons with the two integrating bulk materials. It is found that (i) electronic transport in the LNMO cathode is enhanced due to partial closure of the LNMO band gap (~0.4 eV) and (ii) the lithium ions can easily diffuse near the LNMO/STO interface and within STO due to the small size of the involved ion-hopping energy barriers. Furthermore, the formation energy of oxygen vacancies notably increases close to the LNMO/STO interface, thus indicating a reduction in oxygen loss at the cathode surface and a potential inhibition of undesirable structural phase transitions. This theoretical work therefore opens up new routes for the practical improvement of cost-affordable lithium-rich cathode materials based on highly stable oxide perovskite coatings.

A high-throughput screening of piezo-photocatalytic materials based on first-principles calculations and a simple electrostatic model is presented that identifies new bulk compounds able to catalyse the water splitting reaction under sunlight.

Multiferroic BiFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (BFCO) thin films are promising candidates for emerging optoelectronics and all-oxide solar absorbers. Yet, a thorough understanding of the structural evolution and associated changes in the functional properties of BFCO is lacking. Here, we explore thickness-dependent structural phase transitions in epitaxial BFCO films and ascertain the impact of the accompanying crystallographic distortions on their photoresponse. The results show that the strain imposed by the substrate changes the crystal symmetry, inducing a transition from a tetragonal-like to rhombohedral-like phase through a rather complex strain relaxation mechanism upon increasing film thickness. This change in crystallographic distortion also induces a shift of ~150 meV in the bandgap. Moreover, wavelength-resolved photocurrent measurements reveal that the absorption onset is redshifted for the tetragonal-like structure, implying light absorption up to wavelengths of 800 nm. First-principles calculations shed further light on the symmetry-induced changes in the electronic structure of the BFCO films, where the crystallographic symmetry is shown to be a decisive factor for modifying the characteristics of the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum in the perovskite oxides, revealing a new type of Mott multiferroic in BFCO system. This work provides a new strategy to further engineer the optoelectronic properties of the multiferroic oxide films through thickness-induced phase transitions.

Ruddlesden–Popper phase 2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibit improved lifetime while still facing challenges such as phase alignment and up-scaling to module-level devices. Herein, polyelectrolytes are explored to tackle this issue. The contact between perovskite and hole-transport layer (HTL) is important for decreasing interfacial non-radiative recombination and scalable fabrication of uniform 2D perovskite films. Through exploring compatible butylamine cations, we first demonstrate poly(3-(4-carboxybutyl)thiophene-2,5-diyl)-butylamine (P3CT-BA) as an efficient HTL for 2D PSCs due to its great hydrophilicity, relatively high hole mobility and uniform surface. More importantly, the tailored P3CT-BA has an anchoring effect and acts as the buried passivator for 2D perovskites. Consequently, a best efficiency approaching 18¿% was achieved and we further first report large-area (2×3 cm2, 5×5 cm2) 2D perovskite minimodules with an impressive efficiency of 14.81¿% and 11.13¿%, respectively.

Introducing large oxygen deficiencies while retaining low resistivity is important for enhancing the overall thermoelectric properties in 3d transition-metal oxides. In this study, a new synthesis route to reconstruct the insulating brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 is adapted. Through a step-by-step nano-blocks modification, a series of highly-conductive layered structures is evolved, which are [Sr2O2H2]0.5CoO2, [Sr2O2]0.4CoO2, and [Sr2CoO3]0.57CoO2, while still retaining considerable Seebeck coefficient (˜100 µV K-1). Coexistence of low resistivity and high oxygen deficiency is realized in the latter two polymorphs by forming a majority of sintered oxygen vacancies in the rock-salt layer and a minority of normal oxygen vacancies in the CoO2 layer. A room-temperature in-plane power factor of 3.6 mW K-2 m-1, power output density of 4.5 W m-2 at a temperature difference of 28 K, and an out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 0.33 W K-1 m-1 are obtained in the [Sr2O2]0.4CoO2 thin film that exhibits the highest oxygen deficiency (d = 2.95), which is on par with Bi2Te3, the benchmark. It is pointed out that proper distribution of oxygen vacancy is essential in tailoring the physical and chemical properties of transition-metal oxides. The sintered/normal oxygen vacancy layer model provides guidance to the exploration of materials with both low electric resistivity and thermal conductivity.

The new class of oxide heterojunctions with mixed dimensionalities holds great promise for energy and environmental applications. However, the existing fabrication strategies typically involve low-yield and multistep processes leading to the formation of powders that necessitate binding agents when used for electrochemical applications; thereby, the durability and performance of the resultant electrode may be adversely impacted. To address these challenges, the present work first reports a high-temperature counter-current gas flow technique for rapid fabrication (5–10 min) of centimetre-size, self-adhesive, free-standing 3D patches made of ZnO-based woven nanowires. Furthermore, the high applicability of the method was shown by layer-by-layer assembly of the ZnO and layers of 0D heteroatoms including Bi2O3, CdO, SnO2, and carbon forming stratified oxide heterojunction (SOH) nanostructures with midgap states within their electronic bandgap region. This work is innovative in that the ZnO and the fabricated SOHs are synthesised through a sustainable and large-scale method based on microrecycling of waste materials. The engineering of the electronic band positions can modify the functionality of the SOH patches by optimising the potentials required for catalytic reactions. As a representative, the SOH nanostructures were tested for anodic electrocatalytic water oxidation to H2O2. The results showed that the ZnO–CdO patch has the lowest overpotential of 150 mV and outstanding stability at 2.33 V vs. RHE. Furthermore, the results of first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations (i) confirmed realignments of the band position due to the formation of midgap states, and (ii) revealed that significant improvements in the electrocatalytic H2O2 performance can be achieved with overpotentials as low as 0.19 and 0.31 V for ZnO–CdO and ZnO–Bi2O3, respectively. This work offers an ultrafast fabrication strategy to synthesise binder-free SOH nanostructures with an engineered electronic structure that can be an alternative to state-of-the-art noble metal electrocatalysts such as Pt.

Organic–inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite solar cells have made unprecedented progress in improving photovoltaic efficiency during the past decade, while still facing critical stability challenges. Herein, the natural organic dye Indigo is explored for the first time to be an efficient molecular passivator that assists in the preparation of high-quality hybrid perovskite film with reduced defects and enhanced stability. The Indigo molecule with both carbonyl and amino groups can provide bifunctional chemical passivation for defects. In-depth theoretical and experimental studies show that the Indigo molecules firmly binds to the perovskite surfaces, enhancing the crystallization of perovskite films with improved morphology. Consequently, the Indigo-passivated perovskite film exhibits increased grain size with better uniformity, reduced grain boundaries, lowered defect density, and retarded ion migration, boosting the device efficiency up to 23.22%, and ˜21% for large-area device (1 cm2). Furthermore, the Indigo passivation can enhance device stability in terms of both humidity and thermal stress. These results provide not only new insights into the multipassivation role of natural organic dyes but also a simple and low-cost strategy to prepare high-quality hybrid perovskite films for optoelectronic applications based on Indigo derivatives.

Strategies for tuning the thermal conductivity of crystals by means of external fields are rare. Here, we predict the existence of large magnetophononic effects in materials that undergo antiferromagnetic (AFM) ↔ ferromagnetic (FM) phase transitions, which allow for the modulation of the lattice heat conductivity, κL, via the application of magnetic fields. Specifically, by using first-principles methods we predict a large and anomalous κL increase of ≈40% for the metamagnetic phase transition occurring in bulk FeRh near room temperature. All-inorganic CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I, or mixed halides) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) exhibit tunable optical bandgaps and narrow emission peaks, which have received worldwide interest in the field of both photovoltaics (PVs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, it is reported a discovery that CsPbI3 perovskite QD solar cell can simultaneously deliver high PV performance and intense electroluminescence. In specific, the multifunctional CsPbI3 QD film is fabricated through a simple yet efficient solid-state-ligand exchange process using a tailored organic ligand triphenyl phosphite (TPPI). The function of QD surface manipulation using TPPI here is proven to be twofold, balancing the carrier transport and effectively passivating the QD surface to produce conductive and emissive QD film. The CsPbI3 perovskite QD solar cell delivers a champion efficiency of 15.21% with improved open circuit voltage and high fill factor. Concurrently functioning as a red LED, the CsPbI3 perovskite QD solar cell outputs electric power to light conversion efficiency approaching 4%, a record value for QD electroluminescent PVs. The results here indicate that these versatile perovskite QDs may be a promising candidate for fabricating multifunctional optoelectronic devices.

Structural defects are ubiquitous for polycrystalline perovskite films, compromising device performance and stability. Herein, a universal method is developed to overcome this issue by incorporating halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) into perovskite polycrystalline films. CsPbBr3 QDs are deposited on four types of halide perovskite films (CsPbBr3, CsPbIBr2, CsPbBrI2, and MAPbI3) and the interactions are triggered by annealing. The ions in the CsPbBr3 QDs are released into the thin films to passivate defects, and concurrently the hydrophobic ligands of QDs self‐assemble on the film surfaces and grain boundaries to reduce the defect density and enhance the film stability. For all QD‐treated films, PL emission intensity and carrier lifetime are significantly improved, and surface morphology and composition uniformity are also optimized. Furthermore, after the QD treatment, light‐induced phase segregation and degradation in mixed‐halide perovskite films are suppressed, and the efficiency of mixed‐halide CsPbIBr2 solar cells is remarkably improved to over 11% from 8.7%. Overall, this work provides a general approach to achieving high‐quality halide perovskite films with suppressed phase segregation, reduced defects, and enhanced stability for optoelectronic applications., A universal approach is reported to fabricate perovskite films by incorporating inorganic CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) into halide perovskite bulk films. Upon post‐annealing, the released elements from QDs compensate vacancies, and hydrophobic ligands on QDs passivate under‐charged Pb atoms and self‐assemble on surface. Therefore, the resulting films with reduced trap density, suppressed phase segregation, improved surface uniformity and enhanced stability are enabled.

Harvesting energy from ubiquitous moisture is attracting growing interest for directly powering electronic devices. However, it is still challenging to fabricate high-performing moisture-electric generators (MEGs) with high and stable electric output. Herein, we report a simple strategy to modify the oxygen-based groups of graphene oxide using hydrochloric acid treatment, which boosts the electric output based on the device structure of graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (GO/PVA) MEGs. The resulting MEG enables a stable voltage of 0.85 V and a current of 9.28 µA (92.8 µA·cm-2), which are among the highest values reported so far. More excitingly, electric output gets further improved by simply assembling four MEG units in series or parallel. Moreover, the MEG shows great commercial potential for flexible and wearable applications. Driven by these advancements, the assembled MEGs can successfully power sensors and calculators. This work opens a new era of advance for a new energy conversion technology able to directly powering electronic devices. A cost-effective and environmentally friendly Pb source is a prerequisite for achieving large-scale, low-cost perovskite photovoltaic devices. Currently, the commonly used method to prepare the lead source is based on a fire smelting process, requiring a high temperature of more than 1000 °C, which results in environmental pollution. Spent car lead acid batteries are an environmentally hazardous waste; however, they can alternatively serve as an abundant and inexpensive Pb source. Due to “self-purification”, quantum dots feature a high tolerance of impurities in the precursor since the impurities tend to be expelled from the small crystalline cores during colloidal nucleation. Herein, PbI2 recycled from spent lead acid batteries via a facile low-temperature solution process is used to synthesize CsPbI3 quantum dots, which simultaneously brings multiple benefits including (1) avoiding pollution originating from the fire smelting process; (2) recycling the Pb waste from batteries; and (3) synthesizing high-quality quantum dots. The resulting CsPbI3 quantum dots have photophysical properties such as PLQY and carrier lifetimes on par with those synthesized from the commercial PbI2 due to expelling of the impurity Na atoms. The resulting solar cells deliver comparable power conversion efficiencies: 14.0% for the cells fabricated using recycled PbI2 and 14.7% for the cells constructed using commercial PbI2. This work paves a new and feasible path to applying recycled Pb sources in perovskite photovoltaics.

A pressure-induced structural phase transition and its intimate link with the superconducting transition was studied for the first time in TiSe2 up to 40 GPa at room temperature using X-ray diffraction, transport measurement, and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate the occurrence of a first-order structural phase transition at 4 GPa from the standard trigonal structure (S.G.P3¯m1) to another trigonal structure (S-G-P3¯c1). Additionally, at 16 GPa, the P3¯c1 phase spontaneously transforms into a monoclinic C2/m phase, and above 24 GPa, the C2/m phase returns to the initial P3¯m1 phase. Electrical transport results show that metallization occurs above 6 GPa. The charge density wave observed at ambient pressure is suppressed upon compression up to 2 GPa with the emergence of superconductivity at 2.5 GPa, with a critical temperature (Tc) of 2 K. A structural transition accompanies the emergence of superconductivity that persists up to 4 GPa. The results demonstrate that the pressure-induced phase transitions explored by the experiments along with the theoretical predictions may open the door to a new path for searching and controlling the phase diagrams of transition metal dichalcogenides. Epitaxially grown $$\hbox {SrTiO}_{{3}}$$ SrTiO 3 (STO) thin films are material enablers for a number of critical energy-conversion and information-storage technologies like electrochemical electrode coatings, solid oxide fuel cells and random access memories. Oxygen vacancies ($${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O ), on the other hand, are key defects to understand and tailor many of the unique functionalities realized in oxide perovskite thin films. Here, we present a comprehensive and technically sound ab initio description of $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O in epitaxially strained (001) STO thin films. The novelty of our first-principles study lies in the incorporation of lattice thermal excitations on the formation energy and diffusion properties of $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O over wide epitaxial strain conditions ($$-4 \le \eta \le +4$$ - 4 ≤ η ≤ + 4 %). We found that thermal lattice excitations are necessary to obtain a satisfactory agreement between first-principles calculations and the available experimental data for the formation energy of $${\mathrm{V}_{{\mathrm{O}}}}$$ V O . Furthermore, it is shown that thermal lattice excitations noticeably affect the energy barriers for oxygen ion diffusion, which strongly depend on $$\eta $$ η and are significantly reduced (increased) under tensile (compressive) strain. The present work demonstrates that for a realistic theoretical description of oxygen vacancies in STO thin films is necessary to consider lattice thermal excitations, thus going beyond standard zero-temperature ab initio approaches.

We measured the specific heat Cp of normal (C4H4S) and deuterated (C4D4S) thiophene in the temperature interval of 1 = T, K = 25. C4H4S exhibits a metastable phase II2 and a stable phase V, both with frozen orientational disorder (OD), whereas C4D4S exhibits a metastable phase II2, which is analogous to the OD phase II2 of C4H4S and a fully ordered stable phase V. Our measurements demonstrate the existence of a large bump in the heat capacity of both stable and metastable C4D4S and C4H4S phases at temperatures of ~10 K, which significantly departs from the expected Debye temperature behavior of Cp ˜ T3. This case study demonstrates that the identified low-temperature Cp anomaly, typically referred to as a “Boson-peak” in the context of glassy crystals, is not exclusive of disordered materials.

The morphologies of ceria nanocrystals play an essential role in determining their redox and catalytic performances in many applications, yet the effects of synthesis variables on the formation of ceria nanoparticles of different morphologies and their related growth mechanisms have not been systematised. The design of these morphologies is underpinned by a range of fundamental parameters, including crystallography, optical mineralogy, the stabilities of exposed crystallographic planes, CeO2-x stoichiometry, phase equilibria, thermodynamics, defect equilibria, and the crystal growth mechanisms. These features are formalised and the key analytical methods used for analysing defects, particularly the critical oxygen vacancies, are surveyed, with the aim of providing a source of design parameters for the synthesis of nanocrystals, specifically CeO2-x. However, the most important aspect in the design of CeO2-x nanocrystals is an understanding of the roles of the main variables used for synthesis. While there is a substantial body of data on CeO2-x morphologies fabricated using low cerium concentrations ([Ce]) under different experimental conditions, the present work fully maps the effects of the relevant variables on the resultant CeO2-x morphologies in terms of the commonly used raw materials [Ce] (and [NO3-] in Ce(NO3)3·6H2O) as feedstock, [NaOH] as precipitating agent, temperature, and time (as well as the complementary vapour pressure). Through the combination of consideration of the published literature and the generation of key experimental data to fill in the gaps, a complete mechanistic description of the development of the main CeO2-x morphologies is illustrated. Further, the mechanisms of the conversion of nanochains into the two variants of nanorods, square and hexagonal, have been elucidated through crystallographic reasoning. Other key conclusions for the crystal growth process are the critical roles of (1) the formation of Ce(OH)4 crystallite nanochains as the precursors of nanorods and (2) the disassembly of the nanorods into Ce(OH)4 crystallites and NO3--assisted reassembly into nanocubes (and nanospheres) as an unrecognised intermediate stage of crystal growth.

Compositional engineering of BiFeO3 can significantly boost its photovoltaic performance. Therefore, controlling site substitution and understanding how it affects the optical and electronic properties while achieving robust and stable phases is essential to continue progressing in this field. Here the influence of cation co-substitution in BiFeO3 on phase purity, optical and electronic properties is investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic ellipsometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, respectively. Piezoelectric force microscopy and ferroelectric characterization at room temperature has been carried out in co-doped BiFeO3 films. First-principles calculations are also performed and compared to the experimental observations. It is shown that the incorporation of La3+ in Bi(Fe,Co)O3 films improves phase purity and stability while preserving the reduced band gap achieved in metastable Bi(Fe,Co)O3. Moreover, it is suggested that the changes in the optoelectronic properties are mainly dictated by the hybridisation between unoccupied Co 3d and O 2p states along with the presence of Co3+/Co2+ species. Metal oxide pseudocapacitors are limited by low electrical and ionic conductivities. The present work integrates defect engineering and architectural design to exhibit, for the first time, intercalation pseudocapacitance in CeO2–x. An engineered chronoamperometric electrochemical deposition is used to synthesize 2D CeO2–x nanoflakes as thin as ~12 nm. Through simultaneous regulation of intrinsic and extrinsic defect concentrations, charge transfer and charge–discharge kinetics with redox and intercalation capacitances together are optimized, where reduction increases the gravimetric capacitance by 77% to 583 F g–1, exceeding the theoretical capacitance (562 F g–1). Mo ion implantation and reduction processes increase the specific capacitance by 133%, while the capacitance retention increases from 89 to 95%. The role of ion-implanted Mo6+ is critical through its interstitial solid solubility, which is not to alter the energy band diagram but to facilitate the generation of electrons and to establish the midgap states for color centers, which facilitate electron transfer across the band gap, thus enhancing n-type semiconductivity. Critically, density functional theory simulations reveal, for the first time, that the reduction causes the formation of ordered oxygen vacancies that provide an atomic channel for ion intercalation. These channels enable intercalation pseudocapacitance but also increase electrical and ionic conductivities. In addition, the associated increased active site density enhances the redox such that the 10% of the Ce3+ available for redox (surface only) increases to 35% by oxygen vacancy channels. These findings are critical for any oxide system used for energy storage systems, as they offer both architectural design and structural engineering of materials to maximize the capacitance performance by achieving accumulative surface redox and intercalation-based redox reactions during the charge/discharge process.

Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to external fields and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ($|\Delta T| \sim 1$ K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict the existence of colossal barocaloric effects (isothermal entropy changes of $|\Delta S| \sim 100$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$) in the energy material Li$_{2}$B$_{12}$H$_{12}$ by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we estimate $|\Delta S| = 387$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$ and $|\Delta T| = 26$ K for an applied pressure of $P = 0.4$ GPa at $T = 475$ K. The disclosed colossal barocaloric effects are originated by an order-disorder phase transformation that exhibits a fair degree of reversibility and involves coexisting Li$^{+}$ diffusion and (BH)$_{12}^{-2}$ reorientational motion at high temperatures., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Hybrid halide perovskites have emerged as highly promising photovoltaic materials because of their exceptional optoelectronic properties, which are often optimized via compositional engineering like mixing halides. It is well established that hybrid perovskites undergo a series of structural phase transitions as temperature varies. In this work, the authors find that phase transitions are substantially suppressed in mixed-halide hybrid perovskite single crystals of MAPbI3-xBrx (MA = CH3NH3+ and x = 1 or 2) using a complementary suite of diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, as a general behavior, multiple crystallographic phases coexist in mixed-halide perovskites over a wide temperature range, and a slightly distorted monoclinic phase, hitherto unreported for hybrid perovskites, is dominant at temperatures above 100 K. The anomalous structural evolution is correlated with the glassy behavior of organic cations and optical phonons in mixed-halide perovskites. This work demonstrates the complex interplay between composition engineering and lattice dynamics in hybrid perovskites, shedding new light on their unique properties.

Interfacial thermal transport plays a prominent role in the thermal management of nanoscale objects and is of fundamental importance for basic research and nanodevices. At metal/insulator interfaces, a configuration commonly found in electronic devices, heat transport strongly depends upon the effective energy transfer from thermalized electrons in the metal to the phonons in the insulator. However, the mechanism of interfacial electron-phonon coupling and thermal transport at metal/insulator interfaces is not well understood. Here, the observation of a substantial enhancement of the interfacial thermal resistance and the important role of surface charges at the metal/ferroelectric interface in an Al/BiFeO3 membrane are reported. By applying uniaxial strain, the interfacial thermal resistance can be varied substantially (up to an order of magnitude), which is attributed to the renormalized interfacial electron-phonon coupling caused by the charge redistribution at the interface due to the polarization rotation. These results imply that surface charges at a metal/insulator interface can substantially enhance the interfacial electron-phonon-mediated thermal coupling, providing a new route to optimize the thermal transport performance in next-generation nanodevices, power electronics, and thermal logic devices., Y.Z., C.D., and Z.G. contributed equally to this work. Critical catalysis studies often lack elucidation of the mechanistic role of defect equilibria in solid solubility and charge compensation. This approach is applied to interpret the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of a free-standing 2D–3D CeO2-x scaffold, which is comprised of holey 2D nanosheets, and its heterojunctions with MoO3-x and RuO2. The band gap alignment and structural defects are engineered using density functional theory (DFT) simulations and atomic characterization. Further, the heterojunctions are used in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and catalytic ozonation applications, and the impacts of the metal oxide heteroatoms are analyzed. A key outcome is that the principal regulator of the ozonation performance is not oxygen vacancies but the concentration of Ce3+ and Ce vacancies. Cation vacancy defects are measured to be as high as 8.1 at% for Ru-CeO2-x. The homogeneous distribution of chemisorbed, Mo-oxide, heterojunction nanoparticles on the CeO2-x holey nanosheets facilitates intervalence charge transfer, resulting in the dominant effect and resultant ˜50% decrease in overpotential for HER. The heterojunctions are tested for aqueous-catalytic ozonation of salicylic acid, revealing excellent catalytic performance from Mo doping despite the adverse impact of Ce vacancies. The present study highlights the use of defect engineering to leverage experimental and DFT results for band alignment.

In this work, we report a bifunctional electrocatalyst with nickel sulphide (Ni3S2) as the template, vertical graphene (VG) as the bridging material, and nickel–cobalt layered double hydroxides (NiCo LDHs) nanosheets as the active catalyst. The hybrid Ni3S2/VG@NiCo LDHs catalyst exhibits excellent activity in alkaline solution for both OER (overpotential ~ 320 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2) and HER (overpotential ~ 120 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2). In addition, the hybrid catalyst possesses superior stability with 99% retention of voltage upon a continued current density of 20 mV cm-2 for over 24 h. It is found that the transitions of Ni2+/Ni3+ and Co2+/Co3+ ions enable excellent HER and OER performances, and VG bridging between NiCo LDHs and Ni3S2, enable fast charge-transfer and a high density of active sites, resulting in the improved electrical conductivity, intrinsic activity, and electrochemical stability. This work provides a guideline to design the architecture of bifunctional catalysts for highly efficient water splitting applications.

CeO2 is a promising candidate for materials utilized in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) due to its high ionic conductivity. The high operating temperature of SOFCs results in residual thermal stress in the composing materials. In this work, we studied simultaneously the mechanical and electronic behavior of CeO2 under different uniaxial tensile loading directions using density functional theory. CeO2 shows strong anisotropic mechanical and electronic behavior under uniaxial tensile strain that it has the highest ideal strength and fracture strain along [100] direction. Meanwhile, [100] tensile strain also leads to the largest band gap reduction compared with the other two strain directions. The analysis of the mechanism shows that the highest strength along [100] direction is from the highest Young's modulus and surface energy. Meanwhile, the analysis on the band gap variation using a theoretical model previously developed by us suggest that the largest average bond length and dielectric susceptibility variation leads to the largest band gap reduction when [100] tensile strain is applied to CeO2. Therefore, the current study provides a meaningful insight into the mechanical and electronic properties of CeO2 under stress, which is vital for its application as SOFCs’ materials.

Quantum crystals abound in the whole range of solid-state species. Below a certain threshold temperature the physical behavior of rare gases (4He and Ne), molecular solids (H2 and CH4), and some ionic (LiH), covalent (graphite), and metallic (Li) crystals can be explained only in terms of quantum nuclear effects (QNE). A detailed comprehension of the nature of quantum solids is critical for achieving progress in a number of fundamental and applied scientific fields such as planetary sciences, hydrogen storage, nuclear energy, quantum computing, and nanoelectronics. This review describes the current physical understanding of quantum crystals formed by atoms and small molecules, as well as the wide palette of simulation techniques that are used to investigate them. Relevant aspects in these materials such as phase transformations, structural properties, elasticity, crystalline defects, and the effects of reduced dimensionality are discussed thoroughly. An introduction to quantum Monte Carlo techniques, which in the present context are the simulation methods of choice, and other quantum simulation approaches (e.g., path-integral molecular dynamics and quantum thermal baths) is provided. The overarching objective of this article is twofold: first, to clarify in which crystals and physical situations the disregard of QNE may incur in important bias and erroneous interpretations. And second, to promote the study and appreciation of QNE, a topic that traditionally has been treated in the context of condensed matter physics, within the broad and interdisciplinary areas of materials science.

We study the zero-temperature quantum phase transition between liquid and hcp solid $^{4}\mathrm{He}$. We use the variational method with a simple yet exchange-symmetric and fully explicit wave function. It is found that the optimized wave function undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking and describes the quantum solidification of helium at 22 atm. The explicit form of the wave function allows us to consider various contributions to the phase transition. We find that the employed wave function is an excellent candidate for describing both a first-order quantum phase transition and the ground state of a Bose solid.

We study the elastic properties of incommensurate solid ${}^{4}$He in the limit of zero temperature. Specifically, we calculate the pressure dependence of the five elastic constants (${C}_{11}$, ${C}_{12}$, ${C}_{13}$, ${C}_{33}$, and ${C}_{44}$), longitudinal and transversal speeds of sound, and the $T=0$ Debye temperature of incommensurate and commensurate hcp ${}^{4}$He using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. Our results show that under compression, the commensurate crystal is globally stiffer than the incommensurate, however at pressures close to melting (i.e., $P\ensuremath{\sim}25$ bar) some of the elastic constants accounting for strain deformations of the hcp basal plane (${C}_{12}$ and ${C}_{13}$) are slightly larger in the incommensurate solid. Also, we find that upon the introduction of tiny concentrations of point defects, the shear modulus of ${}^{4}$He (${C}_{44}$) undergoes a small reduction.

We study the zero-temperature phase diagrams of H2 adsorbed on the three structures predicted for graphane (chair, boat and washboard graphane), using a dif- fusion Monte Carlo technique. Graphane is the hydrogenated version of graphene, in which each carbon atom changes its hybridization to sp 3 and forms a covalent bond with a hydrogen atom. Our results show that the ground state of H2 adsorbed on all three types of graphane is a √ 3 × √ 3 solid, similar to the structures found both for H2 and D2 on graphene. When the H2 density increases, the system undergoes a first order phase transition to a triangular incommensurate solid. This change is direct in the case of washboard graphane, but indirect via different commensurate structures in the other cases. The total hydrogen weight percentage on the three graphane types in their ground states is in the range 10 % to 12 %, depending on if one or both graphane surfaces are covered with H2.

We theoretically investigate the ground-state properties of a molecular para-hydrogen (p-H2) film in which crystallization is energetically frustrated by embedding sodium (Na) atoms periodically distributed in a triangular lattice. In order to fully deal with the quantum nature of p-H2 molecules, we employ the diffusion Monte Carlo method and realistic semi-empirical pairwise potentials describing the interactions between H2-H2 and Na-H2 species. In particular, we calculate the energetic, structural and superfluid properties of two-dimensional Na-H2 systems within a narrow density interval around equilibrium at zero temperature. In contrast to previous computational studies considering other alkali metal species such as rubidium and potassium, we find that the p-H2 ground-state is a liquid with a significantly large superfluid fraction of ~30%. The appearance of p-H2 superfluid response is due to the fact that the interactions between Na atoms and H2 molecules are less attractive than between H2 molecules. Using quantum Monte Carlo we have studied the superfluid density of the first layer of He4 and H2 adsorbed on graphene and graphite. Our main focus has been on the equilibrium ground state of the system, which corresponds to a registered 3¿×3¿ phase. The perfect solid phase of H2 shows no superfluid signal, whereas He4 has a finite but small superfluid fraction (0.67%). The introduction of vacancies in the crystal makes the superfluidity increase, showing values as large as 14% in He4 without destroying the spatial solid order., Universidad Pablo de Olavide. We determined the zero-temperature phase diagram of D$_2$ physisorbed on graphane using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The substrate used was C-graphane, an allotropic form of the compound that has been experimentally obtained through hydrogenation of graphene. We found that the ground state is the $\delta$ phase, a commensurate structure observed experimentally when D$_2$ is adsorbed on graphite, and not the registered $\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ structure characteristic of H$_2$ on the same substrate., Comment: 6 figures

Lead zirconate (PbZrO3) is considered the prototypical antiferroelectric material with an antipolar ground state. Yet, several experimental and theoretical works hint at a partially polar behaviour in this compound, indicating that the polarization may not be completely compensated. In this work, we propose a simple ferrielectric structure for lead zirconate. First-principles calculations reveal this state to be more stable than the commonly accepted antiferroelectric phase at low temperatures, possibly up to room temperature, suggesting that PbZrO3 may not be antiferroelectric at ambient conditions.
