Stable isotope ratios, carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N), and fatty acids validated the trophic connection between farmed fish in a commercial nearshore fish farm and sea cucumbers in the Mediterranean Sea. This dual tracer approach evaluated organic matter transfer in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) and the ability of sea cucumbers to incorporate fish farm waste (fish faeces and uneaten artificial fish feed) into their tissue. Between October 2018 and September 2019, Holothuria (Roweothuria) poli Delle Chiaje, 1824, co-cultured at IMTA sites directly below one of the commercial fish cage , at 10 m and 25 m from the selected fish cage, and at two reference sites over 800 m from the fish farm. Sea cucumbers were sampled from each site in February, May and September, except at 0 m due to mass mortalities recorded here in the first month of study. Isotopic mixing models revealed that fish farm organic waste was the dominant dietary source for H. poli in IMTA at 10 m and 25 m from the cage. The contribution of marine plant-derived organic matter, Posidonia oceanica leaves and rhizomes, was least important. The isotopic signatures of sea cucumber tissues at reference sites were not explained by the sampled food resources. Importantly, fatty acid profiling revealed a high abundance of individual terrestrial plant fatty acids, such as oleic (18:1n-9), linoleic (18:2n-6) and eicosenoic (20:1n-9) acids in sea cucumber tissue at 10 m and 25 m from the fish cage, presumably linked to the terrestrial plant oil content of the fish feeds. At the reference sites, sea cucumber tissues were characterised by higher relative abundance of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) acid, and the natural marine-based eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (22:6n-3) acids. These analyses revealed important differences in the composition of H. poli between the IMTA and reference locations, driven by aquaculture-derived waste near fish cages. Moreover, this study revealed temporal variation in food availability and quality, and possible differences in the physiological responses of H. poli. Stable isotope analysis and fatty acid profiling provided complementary evidence for the important dietary preferences of H. poli and validated the potential of sea cucumbers to uptake aquaculture organic waste as part of inshore fish-sea cucumber IMTA. Large yellow croaker (LYC) cage farming is a rapidly developing industry in the coastal areas of the East China Sea. However, little is known about the environmental nutrient loadings resulting from the current aquaculture practices for this species. In this study, a nitrogenous waste model was developed for LYC based on thermal growth and bioenergetic theories. The growth model produced a good fit with the measured data of the growth trajectory of the fish. The total, dissolved and particulate nitrogen outputs were estimated to be 133, 51 and 82 kg N tonne(-1) of fish production, respectively, with daily dissolved and particulate nitrogen outputs varying from 69 to 104 and 106 to 181 mg N fish(-1), respectively, during the 2012 operational cycle. Greater than 80 % of the nitrogen input from feed was predicted to be lost to the environment, resulting in low nitrogen retention (<20 %) in the fish tissues. Ammonia contributed the greatest proportion (>85 %) of the dissolved nitrogen generated from cage farming. This nitrogen loading assessment model is the first to address nitrogenous output from LYC farming and could be a valuable tool to examine the effects of management and feeding practices on waste from cage farming. The application of this model could help improve the scientific understanding of offshore fish farming systems. Furthermore, the model predicts that a 63 % reduction in nitrogenous waste production could be achieved by switching from the use of trash fish for feed to the use of pelleted feed.

Combining GIS with neuro-fuzzy modeling has the advantage that expert scientific knowledge in coastal aquaculture activities can be incorporated into a geospatial model to classify areas particularly vulnerable to pollutants. Data on the physical environment and its suitability for aquaculture in an Irish fjard, which is host to a number of different aquaculture activities, were derived from a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and GIS models. Subsequent incorporation into environmental vulnerability models, based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, highlighted localities particularly vulnerable to aquaculture development. The models produced an overall classification accuracy of 85.71%, with a Kappa coefficient of agreement of 81%, and were sensitive to different input parameters. A statistical comparison between vulnerability scores and nitrogen concentrations in sediment associated with salmon cages showed good correlation. Neuro-fuzzy techniques within GIS modeling classify vulnerability of coastal regions appropriately and have a role in policy decisions for aquaculture site selection., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Increasing research is highlighting the fact that streams provide crucial ecosystem services through the biogeochemical and ecological processes they sustain. Freshwater land-based salmonid farms commonly discharge their effluents into low order, headwater streams, partly due to the fact that adequate freshwater resources for production are commonly found in undisturbed areas. We review the effects of salmonid farm effluents on different biological components of stream ecosystems. Relevant considerations related to the temporal and spatial scales of effluent discharge and ecological effects are discussed. These highlight the need to characterize the patterns of stressor discharge when assessing environmental impacts and designing ecological effects studies. The potential role of multiple stressors in disrupting ecosystem structure and function is discussed with an emphasis on aquaculture veterinary medicines. Further research on the effects of veterinary medicines using relevant exposure scenarios would significantly contribute to our understanding of their impact in relation to other effluent stressors., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
