This study aims to examine the use of the momentum strategy of domestic investors who trade small order sizes on IDX. The data used in this study is intraday trade transaction data from the LQ 45 Index for March, April and May 2017 obtained from The Indonesia Capital Market Institute. The method of data analysis used is the market-adjusted model approach. The results of this study indicate that domestic investors who trade in small order sizes tend to use the momentum strategy in government and non-government stock issuers. This finding implies that when IDX is in a good performance, investors should take advantage of this condition because buying stocks that have already been performing well provides a significant short-term abnormal return.

This study contributes to the existing literature by empirically exploring the causes of child labor in the Indonesian labor market. Factors identified include rate of poverty, average wages, education participation, and quality of education. This study utilized an aggregate data of 301 districts and cities across 34 provinces sourced from the National Labor Force Survey and the National School/Madrasah Accreditation Board of the Republic of Indonesia. Using a multiple regression analysis, the study found strong evidence of the positive effect of poverty on child labor. Conversely, the study documented the adverse impact of average wages on child labor in Indonesia. Similarly, the participation in the education system also contributed negatively to the child labor. Finally, the quality of education services is found to have a negative effect on child labor in Indonesia. The findings of this study suggest that, in efforts to reduce the involvement of children in the workforce, the poverty eradication program should be enhanced. The wages should be continuously improved, at least, in par with the changes in prices. Finally, the quality of education and its services ought to be further enhanced to attract more child student participation rates across junior high schools nationwide.

This study contributes to the existing literature on the phenomenon of lower valume of Profit-Loss Sharing (PLS)-based products offered by Islamic banks by comprehensively discussing and analyzing the issue from the internal, external, and regulation perspectives, taking the case of PT. Bank Aceh Syariah (BAS) in Indonesia. Using a grounded theory approach, this study interviews selected informants who are knowledgeable in Islamic economics, banking, and financial theories and practices, including experts, practitioners, customers, and regulators. Viewed from three aspects, namely: internal, external, and regulation, the study found that, from the internal aspect, the problem of the low volume of PLS-based financing products is caused by six factors, namely: high risk, lack of quality and quantity of human resources, complicated handling, lack of banking product innovation, asymmetric information, and lack of socialization. Meanwhile, from the external aspects, it is caused by three factors, namely: moral hazard, lack of community's knowledge of Islamic banking products, and low demand. Finally, from the aspect of the regulation, it is caused by a lack of supportive regulation. By tackling these issues, it is believed that the Islamic bank could offer more PLS-based products that finally contribute to the prosperity of the public.

The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the influence of the implementation of Good Corporate Governance principles and financing risk management on the Islamic banks' performance in Indonesia over the 2010-2019 period. 11 full-pledge Islamic Banks (BUS) was selected as the study sample using the purposive sampling technique and analyzed using the panel multiple regression techniques. The study found that Good Corporate Governance (GCG) and Financing to Deposit Ratio (FDR) positively influence the Islamic banks' performance. In contrast, Non-Performing Financing (NPF) has a negative influence on Islamic banks' performance. These findings imply that to promote the performance further, the Islamic banks should enhance the implementation of GCG principles and minimize NPF by improving financing risk management and enhance their financing by allocating their existing funds to the bankable and productive economic sectors.JEL Classification: G21, G34How to Cite:Maulidar, A., & Majid, M. Using a linear model, previous studies on the ownership concentration-firm performance nexus have produced inconsistent empirical findings and found no consensus concerning the measure of agency conflict control mechanism. Using a non-monotonic model and a combination of agency conflict control mechanisms, this study contributes to the existing literature by examining the moderating roles of additional blockholders, dividends, foreign ownership types in determining the effect of ownership concentration on performance of 580 Indonesia's firms during the 2009-2018 period. Employing panel piecewise and moderated regression models, the study documented that the ownership concentration-firm performance relationship had followed a non-monotonic pattern, proving both monitoring and expropriation hypotheses exist for non-financial firms in Indonesia. These findings highlighted the important role of additional blockholders, dividends, foreign ownership types as moderating variables, and debt as a predictor to influence firm performance, functioning as the control mechanisms for the agency conflicts in Indonesia.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the possibility of relying on the rental rate to price Islamic home financing product.Design/methodology/approach – By comparing two models consisting of either rental rate or lending rate (LR) and selected macroeconomic variables that could influence property value, the study focuses on the Malaysian data covering the period from 1990 to 2006. The study adopts several econometric time‐series analysis, such as the autoregressive distributed lag estimates, bi‐variate Granger causality, and multivariate causality based on the vector error‐correction model.Findings – The study finds consistent evidence that the rental price (RP) is a better alternative than the LR to price Islamic home financing product. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidences on the impact of financial shocks on the Islamic banks vis‐a‐vis the conventional banks. Based on the Malaysian experience over two major financial crises, namely the 1997 Asian financial crisis and 2007 financial crisis, the study aims to test the validity of the proposition that the Islamic banks are more resilient to the financial shocks compared to the conventional banks.Design/methodology/approachFocusing on the Malaysian data covering three sub‐periods, namely, the 1997 Asian financial crisis period (July 1997‐September 1999), the non‐crisis period (October 1999‐June 2007) and the 2007 financial crisis period (July 2007‐September 2009), the study employs the impulse response functions and variance decomposition analysis based on the vector auto‐regression (VAR) method.FindingsThe results indicate that both the Islamic and conventional banking systems are vulnerable to financial shocks. This is contrary to the popular belief that the Islamic financial system is sheltered from the financial shocks due to its interest‐free nature.Research limitations/implicationsThe results of this study have important implications for the risk management practices of both the Islamic and conventional banks.Originality/valueThis paper contributes in providing the empirical evidence on the impact of financial shocks on the Islamic banks. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the efficiency of selected conventional and Islamic unit trust companies in Malaysia during the period 2002 to 2005.Design/methodology/approach – The paper adopts Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to investigate efficiency, as measured by the Malmquist index, which is decomposed into two components: efficiency change and technical change indexes.Findings – The study indicates that technical efficiency is the main contributor to enhancing the efficiency of the Malaysian unit trust industry. In addition, the larger the size of the unit trust companies, the more inefficient the performance. In comparing the efficiency of unit trust companies, the study finds that some of the Islamic unit trust companies perform better than their conventional counterparts.Research limitations/implications – The study is limited to five Islamic unit trust companies. PurposeIn line with the government's policy to promote Malaysia as an international hub for Islamic banking and finance, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the dynamic effects of both Islamic and conventional stock markets on foreign portfolio investments.Design/methodology/approachFirst, the paper explores the short and long‐run relationships between (FPI) and three markets, i.e. the goods, money, and securities market. Second, the paper attempts to examine the relative importance of the three markets in accounting for variations in FPI. Consistent with earlier studies, the goods market variable considered is real income (Y). The money market variables tested are the broad money supply (M2), treasury bill rate (TBR) and the US Federal Fund rate (FFR), while the security market is represented by both Kuala Lumpur Shari'ah Index (KLSI) and Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI).FindingsThe findings of the study indicate that among the three markets studied, the securities market in Malaysia (both conventional and Islamic) is the most significant market in attracting FPI into the economy. This implies that to a certain extent, the government's effort in promoting Malaysia as the international hub for the Islamic capital market has been successful.Originality/valueThe paper suggests that further efforts need to be enhanced in promoting Malaysia as the International hub for the Islamic banking and finance. The paper's findings shed some light on the policy ramifications pertaining to attracting foreign investors into the ICM in Malaysia and in moving towards a more globally competitive capital market.

We analyze the cyclical behavior between outputs and prices in major ASEAN economies, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines over two sample periods: the pre-crisis period (1990 to 1996) and the post-crisis period (2000 to 2006). Specifically, the study aims to shed the light on two issues: (i) the possibility that there is a change in the patterns of the correlations between real activities and prices in a particular country in the pre-crisis period compared to the post-crisis period; and (ii) the synchronization of real activity and price relationships or the business cycles across the major ASEAN countries. In order to analyze the output-price relationship across the countries and time periods, we adopt several tests including the Pearson correlation analysis, Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and Vector Error-Correction Model (VECM). The study documents that the output-price relationship has changed in several countries following the crisis in 1997/1998. While there is a clear business cycles synchronization between the ASEAN-5 countries in the short-run, results have been mixed in the long run. Results of this study contribute towards further enriching the policy recommendations to help ensuring the viability and effectiveness of the economic cooperation between the ASEAN nations.

This research empirically and comparatively examines the quality of conventional and Islamic banks’ asset management in Indonesia during the period 2009-2011. Four general conventional banks [i.e., Bank Mandiri Indonesia (BMI), Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), Bank Central Asia (BCA), and Bank Nasional Indonesia (BNI)] and four Islamic banks (Bank Muamalat, Bank Syariah Mandiri, Bank Syariah Mega Indonesia, and Bank Syariah BRI) were, respectively, explored. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to compare the quality of the Islamic and conventional banks’ asset management with the CAMEL (capital, asset, management, earning, and liquidity) method. It also attempts to analyse the influences of the ROA (Return on Asset), TLTA (Total Loan to Total Assets), and OITL (Operating Income to Total Liabilities) on the quality of the banks’ asset management. The CAMEL method was used to evaluate the quality level of the banks’ asset management, while the multiple regression analysis was then adopted to explore the determinants of the quality of the banks’ asset management. The study documented that Bank Syariah BRI was the best performing bank, with the highest CAMEL score of 50.33, while Bank Mandiri Indonesia was the worst performer with the lowest CAMEL score of 26.33. As a group, the Islamic banks were found to have better rankings, i.e., positions 1, 2, 3, and 6, while the conventional banks were found in 4, 5, 7, and 8, respectively. The study proved that the Islamic banks have a better asset management quality compared to their conventional counterparts. The Islamic banks were also proved to be better able to withstand the risks, particularly the financing risk.

The study assesses the impact of the 2007 US sub-prime crisis on the Malaysian stock market by analysing both the benchmark and sectoral indices. Specifically, it empirically examines the integration of the Malaysian, US and Japanese stock markets at the sectoral level, such as finance, manufacturing, property, industrial products and consumer products in the periods before and during the 2007 sub-prime crisis (September 2006 to May 2009). By adopting the co-integration and vector autoregressions (VAR) methods, the study documents that the nature of integration of the three markets changes due to the crisis. While there are diversification benefits in these markets at the initial stage of the crisis, there seems to be no diversification benefits in the stock markets in a prolonged ‘down market’. In a short time horizon, ‘market panic’ results in investors to withdraw funds in the crisis country and invest in other countries with calmer markets.

In line with the government's policy to promote Malaysia as an international hub for Islamic banking and finance, the dynamic effects of goods, money and securities markets on the development of family takaful (Islamic life insurance) in the country during the period from 1999 : Q1 to 2006 : Q4 are empirically examined. Specifically, it seeks to explore the short- and long-run dynamics and the causalities between takaful performance and the goods market, money market, and securities market. The findings indicate that, the goods market is the most significant market in promoting family takaful in Malaysia. This implies that, the government's effort has been successful, thus far.

This study intends to determine the impact of monetary policy changes on Islamic banks vis-a-vis conventional banks. In achieving this, the study explores the dynamic inter-relationships between deposits and loans of the Islamic and conventional banks with monetary policy variable using two major tests. First, the Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model is used to examine the long-run relationship among the variables. Second, the Vector Error-Correction Model (VECM) is adopted to explore the short- and long-run dynamics between the variables. The study focuses on Malaysian data covering the period from January 1998 to December 2006. The study finds that the Islamic banks' balance sheet items are relatively more sensitive to monetary policy changes, compared to the conventional banks balance sheet items. This implies that the impact of monetary policy is more de-stabilising on the Islamic banks than on the conventional banks.
