Modern gas turbine designs' ever-increasing turbine inlet temperature raises challenges for the nozzle guide vane cooling. Two typical endwall cooling schemes, jump cooling and louver cooling, result in different interactions between the injected coolant and the mainstream, leading to different cooling effects. This study investigates these two cooling schemes on the endwall cooling experimentally and numerically. Wind tunnel tests and the CFD simulations are carried out with engine-representative conditions of an exit Mach number of 0.85, an exit Reynolds number of 1.5×10^6, and an inlet Turbulence intensity of 16%. The jump cooling scheme experiments investigate two blowing ratios, 2.5 and 3.5, two density ratios, 1.2 and 1.95, and three endwall profiles with different NGV-turbine alignments. Four coolant mass flow ratios from 1.0% to 4.0% are tested for the louver cooling. The results show that the cavity vortex, the horseshoe vortex, and the passage vortex are the main factors that prevent the upstream coolant from reaching the NGV passage. The jump cooling scheme generally provides high momentum to the cooling jets. As a result, the coolant at the design case density ratio of 1.95 and blowing ratio of 2.5 is sufficiently energized to penetrate the horseshoe vortex. It then forms a relatively uniform coolant film near the NGV passage inlet, leading to a minimum adiabatic cooling effectiveness of 0.4 throughout the passage. Reducing the coolant density or increasing the blowing ratio leads to higher coolant momentum, so the coolant jets can further suppress the horseshoe vortex. However, high momentum may cause coolant lift-off, mitigating the coolant reattachment. Therefore, the density ratio needs to be carefully balanced with the blowing ratio to optimize the cooling effect. This balance is also affected by the combustor-NGV misalignment, as a higher step height requires higher coolant momentum to overcome the step-induced vortices. On the contrary, the louver cooling scheme provides less momentum to the coolant. The results showed that only by exceeding a coolant mass flow rate of 1~2% can the coolant form a uniform film which provides good coverage upstream of the NGV passage inlet. As for the cooling of the NGV passage, the mass flow rate ratio of the range investigated is not sufficient for desirable cooling performance. The pressure side endwall proves most difficult for the coolant to reach. In addition, the fishmouth cavity at the combustor-NGV passage causes a three-dimensional cavity vortex that transports the coolant in the pitch-wise direction. Moreover, the coolant transport pattern is dependent on the coolant blow rate. Overall, the more-energized coolant film generated by the jump cooling tends to survive longer, but it is also more prone to lift-off. At the same time, the less-energized coolant film caused by the louver cooling is more susceptible to vortices and the discontinuity of the endwall geometry. However, it develops faster, especially in the lateral direction. The two schemes could be applied simultaneously for an ideal cooling system. The jump cooling can provide enough momentum for the coolant to persist in the NGV passage. Meanwhile, the louver cooling covers the upstream region before the jump cooling coolant reattaches to the endwall. Doctor of Philosophy Gas turbines, sometimes called combustion turbines, are widely used to generate power or propulsion for various applications. The three main components of a gas turbine are compressor, combustor, and turbine. Modern gas turbines run at a high turbine inlet temperature that exceeds the current metal limits to increase efficiency. However, this brings significant challenges to the cooling of the first stage of the turbine, the nozzle guide vane. In this research, two commonly used endwall cooling methods, jump cooling and louver cooling, are investigated under engine-representative conditions experimentally and numerically. In addition, flow physics is demonstrated to explain the endwall cooling performance, mainly the upstream boundary layer caused by the interaction between the mainstream and the coolant flow. The results show that the cavity vortex, the horseshoe vortex, and the passage vortex are the main factors that prevent the upstream coolant from reaching the NGV passage. The jump cooling scheme provides high momentum to the cooling jets. As a result, the coolant in the design case is sufficiently energized to penetrate the horseshoe vortex, providing a desirable cooling effect in the NGV passage. Reducing the density ratio or increasing the blowing ratio can help the coolant jets further suppress the horseshoe vortex but also causes more lift-off, which adversely affects the cooling performance. On the contrary, the louver cooling scheme provides less momentum to the coolant, forming a less energized coolant film. The lack of coolant causes the louver coolant film to provide good coverage immediately downstream of the louver scheme exit. However, due to unfavorable interaction with vortices and endwall discontinuity, the cooling effect decays quickly downstream. Overall, the more-energized coolant film generated by the jump cooling tends to survive longer, but it is also more prone to lift-off. At the same time, the less-energized coolant film caused by the louver cooling is more susceptible to vortices and the discontinuity of the endwall geometry. However, it develops faster, especially in the lateral direction. The two schemes could be applied simultaneously for an ideal cooling system to work mutually beneficially.

The following study presents an experimental and computational investigation on the effects of implementing a dual cavity slashface configuration and varying slashface coolant leakage mass flow rate on the thermal performance for a 1st stage nozzle guide vane axisymmetric converging endwall. An upstream doublet staggered cylindrical hole jet cooling scheme provides additional purged coolant with consistent conditions throughout the investigation. The effects are measured in engine representative transonic mainstream and coolant flow conditions where Mexit = 0.85, Reexit = 1.5 × 106, freestream turbulence intensity of 16%, and a coolant density ratio of 1.95. Four combinations of slashface Fwd and Aft cavity mass flow rate are experimentally analyzed by comparing key convective heat transfer parameters. Data is collected and reduced using a combination of IR thermography and a linear regression technique to map endwall heat transfer performance throughout the passage. A flow visualization study is employed using 100 cSt oil-based paint to gather qualitative insights into the endwall flow field. A complimentary CFD study is carried out to gather additional understanding of the endwall flow ingestion and egression behavior as well as comparing performance against a conventional cavity configuration. Experimental comparisons indicate slashface mass flow rate variations have a minor effect on passage film cooling coverage. Instead, coolant coverage across the passage is primarily driven by upstream purge coolant. However, endwall heat transfer coefficient is reduced as much as 20% in mid-passage areas as leakage flow decreases. This suggests that changes in leakage flow maintains a first order correlation in altering passage aerodynamics that, despite relatively consistent film cooling coverage, also leads to significant changes in net heat flux reduction in the passage. Endwall flow behavior proves to be complex along the gap interface showing signs of ingestion, egression, and tangential flow varying spatially throughout the gap. CFD comparisons suggests that a dual cavity configuration varies the gap static pressure distribution closer to the mainstream pressure throughout the passage in high speed applications compared to a single cavity configuration. The resulting decelerating flow creates a more stable endwall flow profile and favorable coolant environment by reducing boundary layer thinning and shear interaction in near gap endwall tangential flow. Master of Science Gas turbines are often exposed to high temperatures as they convert hot, energetic gas streams into mechanical motion. As turbines receive higher temperature gases, their efficiency increases and reduces waste. However, these temperatures can get too hot for turbine parts. To survive these high temperatures, turbine components are often assembled with a gap in between to allow the part to expand and contrast when it heats and cools. Relatively cold air is also fed into the gap to help prevent hot gases from entering. This cold air can also feed into other pathways to flow onto the turbine component's surface and act as an insulating layer to the hot gas and protect the component from overheating. The study presented investigates an assembly gap, referred to as a slashface gap, found in the middle of a vane located immediately after gas combustion with cold air leaking through. One unique aspect of this study is that there are two pathways for cold air, or coolant, to leak through when, typically, there is only one. The slashface gap lies on a wall which the vanes are attached to, referred to as the endwall. Multiple small holes on the endwall in between the combustor and vanes jet out coolant to try and protect the endwall from hot gases. These holes, called jump cooling holes, point out towards the vanes and angled more shallowly so that the holes do not face directly up from the endwall. The holes are angled as they are meant to gracefully spray coolant to cover and insulate the endwall instead of mixing with the hot air above. The experiments found that changing how much coolant is leaked through the slashface has little effect on how much coolant from jump cooling holes covered the endwall. However, smaller slashface leaks better protect the endwall from the hot gas by forcing it to move smoother and give off less heat across the endwall rather than a tumbling like manner. The experiment is modeled on a computer simulation to determine the differences of a slashface gap with the typical one coolant pathway and the coolant dual pathway configuration that is tested in the experiments. This simulation discovered that having two coolant pathways significantly reduces how much hot gas and jump cooling coolant enters and leaves the slashface gap. This makes the surrounding airflow along the endwall travel more smoothly and does not give off as much heat as if a single coolant pathway configuration is used instead.

The study presented herein describes and analyzes a detailed experimental investigation of the effects of density ratio on endwall thermal performance at varying blowing rates for a typical nozzle guide vane platform purge jet cooling scheme. An axisymmetric converging endwall with an upstream doublet staggered cylindrical hole purge jet cooling scheme was employed. Nominal exit flow conditions were engine representative and as follows: {rm Ma}_{Exit} = 0.85, {rm Re}_{Exit,C_{ax}} = 1.5 times {10}^6, and large-scale freestream Tu = 16%. Two blowing ratios were investigated corresponding to the upper and lower engine extrema. Each blowing ratio was investigated amid two density ratios; one representing typical experimental neglect of density ratio, at DR = 1.2, and another engine representative density ratio achieved by mixing foreign gases, DR = 1.95. All tests were conducted on a linear cascade in the Virginia Tech Transonic Blowdown Wind Tunnel using IR thermography and transient data reduction techniques. Oil paint flow visualization techniques were used to gather quantitative information regarding the alteration of endwall flow physics due two different blowing rates of high-density coolant. High resolution endwall adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, Nusselt number, and Net Heat Flux Reduction contour plots were used to analyze the thermal effects. The effect of density is dependent on the coolant blowing rate and varies greatly from the high to low blowing condition. At the low blowing condition better near-hole film cooling performance and heat transfer reduction is facilitated with increasing density. However, high density coolant at low blowing rates isn't adequately equipped to penetrate and suppress secondary flows, leaving the SS and PS largely exposed to high velocity and temperature mainstream gases. Conversely, it is observed that density ratio only marginally affects the high blowing condition, as the momentum effects become increasingly dominant. Overall it is concluded density ratio has a first order impact on the secondary flow alterations and subsequent heat transfer distributions that occur as a result of coolant injection and should be accounted for in purge jet cooling scheme design and analysis. Additionally, the effect of increasing high density coolant blowing rate was analyzed. Oil paint flow visualization indicated that significant secondary flow suppression occurs as a result of increasing the blowing rate of high-density coolant. Endwall adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, Nusselt number, and NHFR comparisons confirm this. Low blowing rate coolant has a more favorable thermal impact in the upstream region of the passage, especially near injection. The low momentum of the coolant is eventually dominated and entrained by secondary flows, providing less effectiveness near PS, near SS, and into the throat of the passage. The high momentum present for the high blowing rate, high-density coolant suppresses these secondary flows and provides enhanced cooling in the throat and in high secondary flow regions. However, the increased turbulence impartation due to lift off has an adverse effect on the heat load in the upstream region of the passage. It is concluded that only marginal gains near the throat of the passage are observed with an increase in high density coolant blowing rate, but severe thermal penalty is observed near the passage onset. Master of Science Gas turbine technology is used frequently in the burning of natural gas for power production. Increases in engine efficiency are observed with increasing firing temperatures, however this leads to the potential of overheating in the stages following. To prevent failure or melting of components, cooler air is extracted from the upstream compressor section and used to cool these components through various highly complex cooling schemes. The design and operational adequacy of these schemes is highly subject to the mainstream and coolant flow conditions, which are hard to represent in a laboratory setting. This experimental study explores the effects of various coolant conditions, and their respective response, for a purge jet cooling scheme commonly found in engine. This scheme utilizes two rows of staggered cylindrical holes to inject air into the mainstream from platform, upstream of the nozzle guide vane. It is the hope that this air forms a protective layer, effectively shielding the platform from the hostile mainstream conditions. Currently, little research has been done to quantify these effects of purge flow cooling scheme while mimicking engine geometry, mainstream and coolant conditions. For this study, an endwall geometry like that found in engine with a purge jet cooling scheme is studied. Commonly, an upstream gap is formed between the combustor lining and first stage vane platform, which is accounted for in this testing. Mainstream and coolant flow conditions can have large impacts on the results gathered, so both were matched to engine conditions. Varying of coolant density and injection rate is studied and quantitative results are gathered. Results indicate coolant fluid density plays a large role in purge jet cooling, and with neglection of this, potential thermal failure points could be overlooked This is exacerbated with less coolant injection. Interestingly, increasing the amount of coolant injected decreases performance across much of the passage, with only marginal gains in regions of complex flow. These results help to better explain the impacts of experimental neglect of coolant density, and aid in the understanding of purge jet coolant injection.

Heat transfer experiments were done on a flat plate to study the effect of internal counter-flow backside cooling on adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient. In addition, the effects of density ratio (DR), blowing ratio (BR), diagonal length over diameter (L/D) ratio, and Reynolds number were studied using this new configuration. The results are compared to a conventional plenum fed case. Data were collected up to X/D =23 where X=0 at the holes, an S/D = 1.65 and L/D=1,2. Testing was done at low L/D ratios since short holes are normally found in double wall cooling applications in turbine components. A DR of 2 was used in order to simulate engine-like conditions and this was compared to a DR of 0.92 since relevant research is done at similar low DR. The BR range of 0.5 to 1.5 was chosen to simulate turbine conditions as well. In addition, previous research shows that peak effectiveness is found within this range. Infrared (IR) thermography was used to capture temperature contours on the surface of interest and the images were calibrated using a thermocouple and data analyzed through MATLAB software. A heated secondary fluid was used as 'coolant' in the present study. A steady state heat transfer model was used to perform the data reduction procedure. Results show that backside cooling configuration has a higher adiabatic film cooling effectiveness when compared to plenum fed configurations at the same conditions. In addition, the trend for effectiveness with varying BR is reversed when compared with traditional plenum fed cases. Yarn flow visualization tests show that flow exiting the holes in the backside cooling configuration is significantly different when compared to flow exiting the plenum fed holes. We hypothesize that backside cooling configuration has flow exiting the holes in various directions, including laterally, and behaving similar to slot film cooling, explaining the differences in trends. Increasing DR at constant BR shows an increase in adiabatic effectiveness and HTC in both backside cooling and plenum fed configurations due to the decreased momentum of the coolant, making film attachment to the surface more probable. The effects of L/D ratio in this study were negligible since both ratios used were small. This shows that the coolant flow is still underdeveloped at both L/D ratios. The study also showed that increasing turbulence through increasing Reynolds number decreased adiabatic effectiveness. MS Gas turbine engines are used for multiple applications for power (power plants) or thrust (aircraft propulsion). Engine efficiency is correlated with higher working temperatures, which exceed the melting points of the materials being used. Therefore, more efficient cooling techniques are needed in order to protect the engine turbine components, such as blades and vanes. Relatively cooler air is bypassed from the compressor to the turbine section to cool the turbine components from the high temperatures. The air flows through the turbine components and out through machined holes referred to as film cooling holes. A protective layer, or film, protects the external region of the blade or vane. Previous research has found that the geometry of the airfoils used and the flow conditions play a major role in heat transfer. Most of the relevant research use a model that contains one-sided heat transfer. The present study focuses on combined backside and film cooling heat transfer, with different geometries and flow conditions, using a steady-state model for the data reduction procedure.

This study describes a detailed investigation on the effects that upstream step misalignment and upstream purge film cooling have on the endwall heat transfer for nozzle guide vanes in a land based power generation gas turbine at transonic conditions. Endwall Nusselt Number and adiabatic film cooling effectiveness distributions were experimentally calculated and compared with qualitative data gathered via oil paint flow visualization which also depicts endwall flow physics. Tests were conducted in a transonic linear cascade blowdown facility. Data were gathered at an exit Mach number of 0.85 with a freestream turbulence intensity of 16% at a Re = 1.5 x 106 based on axial chord. Varied upstream purge blowing ratios and a no blowing case were tested for 3 different upstream step geometries, one of which was the baseline (no step). The other two geometries are a backward step geometry and a forward step geometry, which comprised of a span-wise upstream step of +4.86% span and -4.86% span respectively. Experimentation shows that the addition of upstream purge film cooling increases the Nusselt Number at injection upwards of 50% but lowers it in the throat of the passage by approximately 20%. The addition of a backward facing step induces more turbulent mixing between the coolant and mainstream flows, thus reducing film effectiveness coverage and increasing Nusselt number by nearly 40% in the passage throat. In contrast, the presence of a forward step creates a more stable boundary layer for the coolant flow, thus aiding to help keep the film attached to the endwall at higher blowing ratios. Increasing the blowing ratio increases film cooling effectiveness and endwall coverage up to a certain point, beyond which, the high momentum of the coolant results in poor cooling performance due to jet liftoff. Near endwall streamlines without purge cooling generated by Li et al. [1] for the same geometries were compared to the experimental data. It was shown that even with the addition of upstream purge cooling, the near endwall streamlines as they moved downstream matched strikingly well with the experimental data. This discovery indicates that while the coolant flow will likely affect the flow streamlines three dimensionally, they are minimally effected by the coolant flow near the endwall as the flow moves downstream. The thermal efficiency of a gas turbine directly depends on the rotor inlet temperature. The ever increasing demand for more power and advances in the field of engineering enabled this temperature to be pushed higher. But the material strength of the blades and vanes can often impose restrictions on the thermal load it can bear. This is where gas turbine cooling becomes very critical and a better cooling design has the potential to extend the blade life span, enables higher rotor inlet temperatures, conserves compressor bleed air. Among various kinds of cooling involved in gas turbines, film cooling will be the subject of this study. A novel concept for film cooling holes referred to as anti-vortex design proposed in 2007 is explored in this study. Coolant exits through two bifurcated cylindrical holes that branched out on either side of the central hole resulting in a tripod-like arrangement. Coolant from the side holes interacted with the mainstream and produced vortices that countered the main central rotating vortex pairs, weakening it and pushing the coolant jet towards the surface. In order to understand the performance of this anti-vortex tripod film cooling, a flat plate test setup and a low speed subsonic wind tunnel linear cascade were built. Transient heat transfer experiments were carried out in the flat plate test setup using Infrared thermography. Film cooling performance was quantified by measuring adiabatic effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient ratio. In order to gauge the performance, other standard hole geometries were also tested and compared with. Following the results from the flat plate test rig, film cooling performance was also evaluated on the surface of an airfoil. Adiabatic effectiveness was measured at different coolant mass flow rates. The tripod hole consistently provided better cooling compared to the standard cylindrical hole in both the flat plate and cascade experiments. In order to understand the anti-vortex concept which is one of the primary reason behind better performance of the tripod film cooling hole geometry, numerical simulations (CFD) were carried out at steady state using RANS turbulence models. The interaction of the coolant from the side holes with the mainstream forms vortices that tries to suppress the vortex formed by the central hole. This causes the coolant jet from the central to stay close to the surface and increases its coverage. Additionally, the coolant getting distributed into three individual units reduces the exit momentum ratio. Tripod holes were found to be capable of providing better effectiveness even while consuming almost half the coolant used by the standard cylindrical holes. Ph. D.

The effect of global warming due to increased level of greenhouse gas emissions from coal fired thermal power plants and crisis of reliable energy resources has profoundly increased the importance of natural gas based power generation as a major alternative in the last few decades. Although gas turbine propulsion system had been primarily developed and technological advancements over the years had focused on application in civil and military aviation industry, use of gas turbine engines for land based power generation has emerged as the most promising candidate due to higher thermal efficiency, abundance of natural gas resources, development in generation of hydrogen rich synthetic fuel (Syngas) using advanced gasification technology for further improved emission levels and strict enforcement in emission regulations on installation of new coal based power plants. The fundamental thermodynamic principle behind gas turbine engines is Brayton cycle and higher thermal efficiency is achieved through maximizing the Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT). Modern gas turbine engines operate well beyond the melting point of the turbine component materials to meet the enhanced efficiency requirements especially in the initial high pressure stages (HPT) after the combustor exit. Application of thermal barrier coatings (TBC) provides the first line of defense to the hot gas path components against direct exposure to high temperature gases. However, a major portion of the heat load to the airfoil and passage is reduced through injection of secondary air from high pressure compressor at the expense of a penalty on engine performance. External film cooling comprises a significant part of the entire convective cooling scheme. This can be achieved injecting coolant air through film holes on airfoil and endwall passages or utilizing the high pressure air required to seal the gaps and interfaces due to turbine assembly features. The major objective is to maximize heat transfer performance and film coverage on the surface with minimum coolant usage. Endwall contouring on the other hand provides an effective means of minimizing heat load on the platform through efficient control of secondary flow vortices. Complex vortices form due to the interaction between the incoming boundary layer and endwall-airfoil junction at the leading edge which entrain the hot gases towards the endwall, thus increasing surface heat transfer along its trajectory. A properly designed endwall profile can weaken the effects of secondary flow thereby improving the aerodynamic and associated heat transfer performance. This dissertation aims to investigate heat transfer characteristics of a non-axisymmetric contoured endwall design compared to a baseline planar endwall geometry in presence of three major endwall cooling features – upstream purge flow, discrete hole film cooling and mateface gap leakage under transonic operating conditions. The preliminary design objective of the contoured endwall geometry was to minimize stagnation and secondary aerodynamic losses. Upstream purge flow and mateface gap leakage is necessary to prevent ingestion to the turbine core whereas discrete hole cooling is largely necessary to provide film cooling primarily near leading edge region and mid-passage region. Different coolant to mainstream mass flow ratios (MFR) were investigated for all cooling features at design exit isentropic Mach number (0.88) and design incidence angle. The experiments were performed at Virginia Tech's quasi linear transonic blow down cascade facility. The airfoil span increases in the mainstream flow direction in order to match realistic inlet/exit airfoil surface Mach number distribution. A transient Infrared (IR) thermography technique was employed to measure the endwall surface temperature and a novel heat transfer data reduction method was developed for simultaneous calculation of heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and adiabatic cooling effectiveness (ETA), assuming a 1D semi-infinite transient conduction. An experimental study on endwall film cooling with endwall contouring at high exit Mach numbers is not available in literature. Results indicate significant benefits in heat transfer performance using the contoured endwall in presence of individual (upstream slot, discrete hole and mateface gap) and combined (upstream slot with mateface gap) cooling flow features. Major advantages of endwall contouring were observed through reduction in heat transfer coefficient and increase in coolant film coverage by weakening the effects of secondary flow and cross passage pressure differential. Net Heat Flux Reduction (NHFR) analysis was carried out combining the effect of heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness on both endwall geometries (contoured and baseline) where, the contoured endwall showed major improvement in heat load reduction near the suction side of the platform (upstream leakage only and combined upstream with mateface leakage) as well as further downstream of the film holes (discrete hole film cooling). Detailed interpretation of the heat transfer results along with near endwall flow physics has also been discussed. Ph. D.

Endwall contouring has been widely studied as an effective measure to improve aerodynamic performance by reducing secondary flow strength. The effects of endwall contouring with discrete holes and an upstream purge slot for a high turning (127") airfoil passage under transonic conditions are investigated. The total pressure loss and secondary flow field were measured for two endwall geometries. The non-axisymmetric endwall was developed through an optimization study [1] to minimize secondary losses and is compared to a baseline planar endwall. The blade inlet span increased by 13 degrees with respect to the inlet in order to match engine representative inlet/exit Mach number loading in a HP turbine. The experiments were performed in a quasi-2D linear cascade with measurements at design exit Mach number 0.88 and incidence angle. Four cases were analyzed for each endwall -- the effect of slot presence (with/without coolant) and the effect of discrete holes (with/without coolant) without slot injection. The coolant to mainstream mass flow ratio was set at 1.0% and 0.25% for upstream purge slot and discrete holes, respectively. Aerodynamic loss coefficient is calculated with the measured exit total pressure at 0.1 Cax downstream of the blade trailing edge. CFD studies were conducted in compliment. The aero-optimized endwall yielded lower losses than baseline without the presence of the slot. However, in presence of the slot, losses increased due to formation of additional vortices. For both endwall geometries, results reveal that the slot has increased losses, while the addition of coolant further influences secondary flow development. Master of Science

The contribution of present research work is to experimentally investigate the effects of blowing ratio and mainstream Mach number/Reynolds number (from 0.6/8.5X10⁵ to 1.0/1.4X10⁶) on the performance of the fan-shaped hole injected turbine blade and vane. The study was operated with high freestream turbulence intensity (12% at the inlet) and large turbulence length scales (0.26 for blade, 0.28 for vane, normalized by the cascade pitch of 58.4mm and 83.3mm respectively). Both convective heat transfer coefficient, in terms of Nusselt number, and adiabatic effectiveness are provided in the results. Present research work also numerically investigates the shock/film cooling interaction. A detailed analysis on the physics of the shock/film cooling interaction in the blade cascade is provided. The results of present research suggests the following major conclusions. Compared to the showerhead only vane, the addition of fan-shaped hole injection on the turbine Nozzle Guide Vane (NGV) increases the Net Heat Flux Reduction (NHFR) 2.6 times while consuming 1.6 times more coolant. For the blade, combined with the surface curvature effect, the increase of Mach number/Reynolds number results in an improved film cooling effectiveness on the blade suction side, but a compromised cooling performance on the blade pressure side. A quick drop of cooling effectiveness occurs at the shock impingement on the blade suction side near the trailing edge. The CFD results indicate that this adiabatic effectiveness drop was caused by the strong secondary flow after shock impingement, which lifts coolant away from the SS surface, and increases the mixing. This secondary flow is related to the spanwise non-uniform of the shock impingement. Ph. D.

Increased efficiency and durability of gas turbine components is driven by demands for reduced fuel consumption and increased reliability in aircraft and power generation applications. The complex flow near the endwall of an axial gas turbine has been identified as a significant contributing factor to aerodynamic loss and increased part temperatures. Three-dimensional (non-axisymmetric) contouring of the endwall surface has been shown to reduce aerodynamic losses, but the effect of the contouring on endwall heat transfer is not well understood. This research focused on understanding the general flow physics of contouring and the sensitivity of the contouring to perturbations arising from leakage features present in an engine. Two scaled low-speed cascades were designed for spatially-resolved measurements of endwall heat transfer and film cooling. One cascade was intended for flat and contoured endwall studies without considering typical engine leakage features. The other cascade modeled the gaps present between a stator and rotor and between adjacent blades on a wheel, in addition to the non-axisymmetric endwall contouring. Comparisons between a flat and contoured endwall showed that the contour increased endwall heat transfer and increased turbulence in the forward portion of the passage due to displacement of the horseshoe vortex. However, the contour decreased heat transfer further into the passage, particularly in regions of high heat transfer, due to delayed development of the passage vortex and reduced boundary layer skew. Realistic leakage features such as the stator-rotor rim seal had a significant effect on the endwall heat transfer, although leakage flow from the rim seal only affected the horseshoe vortex. The contours studied were not effective at reducing the impact of secondary flows on endwall heat transfer and loss when realistic leakage features were also considered. The most significant factor in loss generation and high levels of endwall heat transfer was the presence of a platform gap between adjacent airfoils. Ph. D.

An experimental study was performed to measure surface Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness on a film cooled first stage nozzle guide vane using a transient thin film gauge (TFG) technique. The information presented attempts to further characterize the performance of shaped hole film cooling by taking measurements on a row of shaped holes downstream of leading edge showerhead injection on both the pressure and suction surfaces (hereafter PS and SS) of a 1st stage NGV. Tests were performed at engine representative Mach and Reynolds numbers and high inlet turbulence intensity and large length scale at the Virginia Tech Transonic Cascade facility. Three exit Mach/Reynolds number conditions were tested: 1.0/1,400,000; 0.85/1,150,000; and 0.60/850,000 where Reynolds number is based on exit conditions and vane chord. At Mach/Reynolds numbers of 1.0/1,450,000 and 0.85/1,150,000 three blowing ratio conditions were tested: BR = 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. At a Mach/Reynolds number of 0.60/850,000, two blowing ratio conditions were tested: BR = 1.5 and 2.0. All tests were performed at inlet turbulence intensity of 12% and length scale normalized by leading edge diameter of 0.28. Film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer results compared well with previously published data, showing a marked effectiveness improvement (up to 2.5x) over the showerhead only NGV and agreement with published showerhead-shaped hole data. NHFR was shown to increase substantially (average 2.6x increase) with the addition of shaped holes, with only a small increase (average 1.6x increase) in required coolant mass flow. Heat transfer and effectiveness augmentation with increasing blowing ratio was shown on the pressure side, however the suction side was shown to be less sensitive to changing blowing ratio. In the drive to increase cycle efficiency, gas turbine designers have increased turbine inlet temperatures well beyond the metallurgical limits of engine components. In order to prevent failure and meet life requirements, turbine components must be cooled well below these hot gas temperatures. Film cooling is a widely employed cooling technique whereby air is extracted from the compressor and ejected through holes on the surfaces of hot gas path components. The cool air forms a protective film around the surface of the part. Accurate numerical prediction of film cooling performance is extremely difficult so experiments are required to validate designs and CFD tools. In this study, a first stage turbine vane with five rows of showerhead cooling was instrumented with platinum thin-film gauges to experimentally characterize film cooling performance. The vane was tested in a transonic vane cascade in Virginia Tech's heated, blow-down wind tunnel. Two freestream exit Mach numbers of 0.76 and 1.0—corresponding to exit Reynolds numbers based on vane chord of 1.1x106 and 1.5x106, respectively—were tested at an inlet freestream turbulence intensity of two percent and an integral length scale normalized by vane pitch of 0.05. The showerhead cooling scheme was tested at blowing ratios of 0 (no cooling), 1.5, and 2.0 and a density ratio of 1.35. Midspan Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness distributions over the surface of the vane are presented. Film cooling was found to augment heat transfer and reduce adiabatic wall temperature downstream of injection. In general, an increase in blowing ratio was shown to increase augmentation and film cooling effectiveness. Increasing Reynolds number was shown to increase heat transfer and reduce effectiveness. Finally, comparing low turbulence measurements (Tu = 2%) to measurements performed at high freestream turbulence (Tu = 16%) by Nasir et al. [13] showed that large-scale high freestream turbulence can reduce heat transfer coefficient downstream of injection. Master of Science

An experimental and numerical investigation was conducted to determine the film cooling effectiveness of a normal slot and angled slot under realistic engine Mach number conditions. Freestream Mach numbers of 0.65 and 1.3 were tested. For the normal slot, hot gas ingestion into the slot was observed at low blowing ratios (M < 0.25). At high blowing ratios (M > 0.6) the cooling film was observed to "lift off" from the surface. For the 30o angled slot, the data was found to collapse using the blowing ratio as a scaling parameter (x/Ms). Results from the current experiment were compared with the subsonic data published to confirm this test procedure. For the angled slot, at the supersonic freestream Mach number, the current experiment shows that at the same x/Ms, the film cooling effectiveness increases by as much as 25% as compared to the subsonic case. The results of the experiment also show that at the same x/Ms, the film cooling effectiveness of the angled slot is considerably higher than that of the normal slot, at both subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers. The flow physics for the slot tests considered here are also described with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations in the subsonic and supersonic regimes. Master of Science

Efficiency and power output of gas turbines improve with an increase in turbine inlet temperatures, and blade designers continually seek out new methods of increasing these temperatures. Increases in turbine inlet temperatures are achieved by utilizing a combination of internal convective cooling and external film-cooling. This study will evaluate several novel cooling schemes for turbine airfoils, called microcircuits. Microcircuits are placed inside the turbine blade wall, and the features turbulate the air and increase heat transfer surface area, thereby augmenting convective cooling. The coolant flow then exits internal cooling passages to the external side of the blade. Here the coolant forms a protective layer along the external surface of the blade to protect the blade from the heated mainstream flow. In the current study, a low-speed large-scale wind tunnel facility was developed to measure internal heat transfer coefficients and external adiabatic effectiveness, using thermal liquid crystallography and infrared thermography. This test facility is unique in that it can be used to test the effects of internal cooling features on external film cooling. Results show that the highest augmentations in internal heat transfer were seen at the lowest Reynolds numbers. Internal features affected the shapes of external film-cooling contours, but the magnitudes of the spanwise averaged values did not change significantly with changes in internal geometry.
