By incorporating fifth generation technology, Japan hopes to create intelligent computers that can, in some regards, reason. The Japanese government announced in 1981 that it would involve top scientists and spend $450 million on this project. This project will push Japan into the lead as a postindustrial society. Eight Japanese firms are represented at the Institute for New Generation Computer Technology (ICOT) where this computer revolution will take place.
