PHYSIOGNOMY , *FESTIVALS , *RITUAL , *INGESTION , *RITES & ceremonies , *HUNTER-gatherer societies - Abstract
The collective ceremonies, whether of a community or family nature, were hierarchical in the societies of the Mayan Lowlands of the Classic period, and were designed within the framework of a wide range of purposes; so its footprint in the archaeological record also presents a high degree of variation. Many of these rituals culminated in the celebration of festivals and meals that, on rare occasions, reveal a similar "archaeological physiognomy" and make it difficult to interpret their nature. In this essay we analyze a ritual deposit excavated behind the J3 Structure of Group IV of Palenque, an elite residential space occupied by one of the most distinguished noble lineages of the city, as well as the collective ingestion of foods and beverages by its officiants and assistants. The aim of this article is to establish an empirical basis for the study of the so-called "popular religion". The main goal of the research within the framework of which this work has been elaborated is to develop a theological-fundamental reflection on the above-mentioned phenomenon. Although the term in question refers to a very significant instance for the Latin American Church, it has contributed to the underestimation of the reality to which it refers, due to its general meaning and negative connotations. Instead of this term, we suggest the term "religious feast", in the sense of a concrete and positive reality, as a starting point for the theological evaluation of the objects and practices that characterize the experience of faith of Latin American people. We, thus, propose a qualitative analysis of three religious feasts celebrated in Chile, focusing on the "esthetic" (material-sensory) mode in which they are organized, as well as on the role of "agents" assumed by the cult images in this context. Abstract Through some theological observations, we intend to show that the feast of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe has deep rooting in the heart of the people of God, for two basic reasons: Firstly: the devotion to the "Guadalupana" sends us to the Word of God, that instructs our faith; secondly: such devotion is founded on an authentic prophetic Epiphany. The theological reflection is supported in some central ideas: Guadalupe allows the reorganization of the aboriginal conscience. Analogicalally, Guadalupe allows us to nominate God in three ways: christological, trinitarian and anthropological. Guadalupe, recorded in Juan Diego's Tilma (mantle), reveals a world as a world of Mary which is not possible to inhabit. In the narrative of Nican Mopohua we discern a Symbolic approach of the originary Goodness, that manifests the merciful love of the Father in the Son, with the figure of the Sufferer Servant as background.. Finally, Guadalupe sends us to the Biblical text, for being an interpretation of such text and a sign of its reception. The Virgin of Guadalupe finally assumes the characteristics of an authentic prophet. Keywords: feast; sacred; society; religion. more...

This study centres on two main points. The first one, on celebrations, games and recreations forbidden to the clergy, especially in the Kingdom of Castile during the late Middle Ages. The second, on the survey of the sources, with predominance of canonical ones, in which these topics can be detected. more...

- Abstract
This paper studies territory, memory and the community, based on the land claims in El Rosal, Cauca, Colombia. The said vinculation has been seen through lawsuits, disputes over the construction of buildings on land where construction is prohibited, the misappropriation of land, and the subsequent territorial reorganization (which are evidenced in the regional historic archives). It has also been witnessed through the annual Festival of the Virgen del Rosario, a complex ritual that is conceived as territorial updating through the yearly commemoration of the Virgin, and which renews the presence of the villagers within the territory and their jurisdiction over the territory. Structurally, this study provides strength to the hypothesis on the territory- memory continuum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

This article proposes an approach, from the historical discipline, to the festivals linked to local economic activity that emerged from the sixties in the province of Buenos Aires. We understand that an analysis of them over time contributes to shedding light on the changes experienced by societies in rural Buenos Aires towards the end of the 20th century. To do this, we will make an approach to the first decade of celebration of the National Calf Festival and Yerra Day, which has been celebrated in the Ayacucho district since 1969. Through the analysis of the official festival program, we seek to account for the continuities and permanence that were registered in the event during its first years of celebration, understanding that they may be representative of the transformations that affected the society that was celebrating., Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación more...

All along its history the Plaza de la Corredera has been one of the main axes of Cordoba’s life and urbanism, the centre of commercial activities, festive and representative, as well as a link for the other quarters of the city. Its uses, configuration and appearance have evolved from its origin as an open space in the suburbs near the Muslim Medina in the 11th century up to the present time. For its singularity as an Andalusian Baroque Plaza Mayor and its influence on other Spanish squares it was declared national historic-artistic monument in 1982. more...

In this work I will analyze three speeches delivered with the purpose of narrating to the citizens the history of the birth of the Nation at the Fiestas Mayas of the Centenary. They were included in the special edition for the Centenary, published by La Voz del Interior on may 25th., 1910. These speeches were not the only ones delivered and published by the above mentioned newspaper. I have selected them because, coming all of them from the educational environment, they were delivered in different performative (in the sense of the creative capacity of speech) and performatic (in the sense of staging a body action) contexts. I have also taken into account in my selection some gender questions, rescuing the composition of a female student from the Normal School of Teachers in a time when was quite infrequent in our social environment to listen to feminine dissertations. Finally, I tried to select voices that might represent different positions in the social field: a future female primary school teacher, a young doctor who had just graduated from the University, and a priest. The voices will be analyzed in the context of a civil and religious passing ritual, trying to get in the audience a strengthened re-aggregation to a we, the Argentinian citizens. EnglishThis article aims to offer a new reading of the metaphor “feast” in Nietzsche’s work that has traditionally been limited to an interpretation with an anthropological perspective. From Nietzsche’s treatment in some posthumous fragments of his last years, we propose to separate the idea of “feast” from the idea of community and offer it beyond the community since we understand that, for the nietzschean thought, any form of community is bound to the instinct of the herd. more...

The reason of this paper, both on economy and culture, is verifying –in a not much studied area- the level of integration of Portuguese people in Sevillian society, their features of identity and their economic position in the period between the end of XVIIth and the beginning of XVIIIth century. The deal of this paper is studying behaviour of Portuguese nation in the ritual and festive dimensión, exemplified by the main annual feast, their patron saint’s. Therefore, we will analyze in series the evolution of the investment in every component of pomp through administrative documentation, related to the context. In the late Middle Ages, chivalry fully assumed the political-military role which it had gradually attained as supreme civil class. The ludic imagery of this institution was incorporated into its repre- sentative iconographic repertoire and chivalric pageantry, considered as an artistic production, be- came par excellence the means of aesthetic expression of late Gothic festivals. This paper presents an interdisciplinary episode dealing with both chivalry’s warlike and pre-courtly means and culture of war through the artistically purposed reuse of materials, structures and military strategies provided by graphic and written sources. more...

The value of celebrations in Mexico is almost religious. It is linked to renewal of space and time. Each feast involves both the interruption of a linear sequence, commemoration, communion or physical encounter with others. An opportunity to return to the source, the primordial stage in which each one merges with the whole, the great universal mix, bathing in the waters of the beginning. This explains why civic and religious festivals, and also mass demonstrations are not the exception, but a social Mexican necessity which confirms the rule throughout centuries. Being a millenary country of enormous cultural diversity, festivities to celebrate Mexico as independent nation would adopt a polysemic significance along the same lines: their cosmic and ritual components symbolize both a return to the land, a claim to awaken the seed and an immersion at the ancient symbols. Meaning, an anonymous remembrance able to combine simultaneously the exercise of theocratic power, love and respect for the ancestors, the inescapable condition of being together, and the compliance with specific calendrical deadlines. more...

The literary genre called “relaciones de sucesos” is the main source that Historians of Music have to research the role of music in public feasts and the concept and awareness of music and musicians in Baroque Age. Those texts from XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries are considered a valuable bibliographic heritage, insufficiently known and utilised, that reveals the passion of Baroque society for ritual, ceremony and sensorial language. Specifically, this literary genre is a very appropriate set to study the sound display of Early Modern Age cities in the moments of the greatest peak of their civic consciousness. In Baroque feasts, music played a role in the connection between every artistic contribution, showing the nature of Baroque sensitivity as well as any other. more...

The goal of the World Youth Day (WYD) is to convey and cement faith in the youth, and make them capable to carry out their mission in the world. It is organized around three basic pillars (Christ-Church-Mission) and requires a preparation journey and a follow-up, which involves the universal Church and the dioceses. The youth are called, provoked, to follow Christ and to live in sainthood in the Church and in the world. All its activities – liturgical, catechetical, cultural and festive – work around the topic chosen by the Pope, which sets up the framework of the Youth Day. Madrid’s WYD slogan was «planted and built up in Christ, firm in the faith» (Col 2:7), and it answered the youths’ need to live planted in the faith and to achieve the stability and consistency of Christian maturity, within a freedom to love pedagogy.

Throughout Early Modern Age (XVIth-XVIIIth centuries), Spanish society developped a complex sound lenguaje in urban public festivals, configured in a long evolution and drinking of different sources, both obtained and ancestral. The aim of this paper is the analysis of sounds in urban feasts through sources from XVth century, with the objective of discerning how much original Baroque festive language was, or which were its grounds on Castillian medieval precedents. more...

The ministers of the High Justice Court of Valladolid were absorbed in the sacred atmosphere of the ancien regime, sharing the same beliefs which were often very close to superstition, of the so-called evil «popular religiousness». However, as we show in this study which focuses on the 17th Century, the piety of the Chancellery was shown in various ways and had other connotations as well as the religious ones as such. Their own devotion, their participation in urban religious feasts and in the exequies of their members were also a suitable scene, in view of the role played by ceremonial and sacred eventes in that society, in order to strengthen its image and hence, that of the Monarchy.

The cult and ritual to the aragonese saints Nunilo and Alodia migrated in early Middle Ages to Navarra and later on, to Andalusia (S.XV). In a parallel way, their relics followed the diffussion of this devotion. A second movement of migration leaded some andalusian groups, in the XX th century, to several big capitals far from their villages: Madrid, Valencia, Murcia and Barcelona. These groups developped their ancient rituals and devotion to the Saints as a central part of their heritage and at the same time, they reformulated the new environment in order to fit the new landscapes with their common memory. more...

The text visits the very beginning, the source of Pierre Sanchis’santhropology, that is, his doctoral thesis Arraial: la fête d’un peuple – les pèlerinagespopulaires au Portugal, defended in 1976 at Ve section da École Pratique des HautesÉtudes under the guidance of H. Desroche and J. Séguy. Free of hermeneuticdelimited methodicals, this modest bricolage exercise is only aimed at arranging thematerial as it is laid out throughout the thesis, trying to highlight some textualvestiges of what may be considered the matrix and the raison d’être of Pierre Sanchis’santhropology, which means: the search, from a dialogue reason and a dialecticalperspective, of the senses articulation. This paper presents an interdisciplinary episode dealing with both chivalry’s warlike and pre-courtly means and culture of war through the artistically purposed reuse of materials, structures and military strategies provided by graphic and written sources. more...

Three narrators from Jalisco, representative of the best Mexican narrative of the fifties and sixties, Agustín Yáñez, Juan Rulfo and Juan José Arreola, tackle the festive subject matter in part of their work. Yáñez will do this in some of the stories of Los sentidos al aire, Rulfo will dwell on an aura of doom of the festive in some scenes of Pedro Páramo, as in some stories of El Llano en llamas, and, lastly, Arreola, in his novel La feria, will resort to Zapotlán festivities to stand out the idiosyncratic as well as the confrontation between the religious and the festive. There is a great number of coincidencies among the texts mentioned, and we will deal with them, but, mainly, we want to stand out the value of the idiosyncratic that converge on their stories to tackle the same topic, the different atmosphere and perspectives as well as narrative strategies. All in all, we want to identify their different rhetorical abilities to get to the bottom the metaphoric value of the festive. more...
