2020 marked an unprecedented change in the world population, social relationships, and cultural consumption itself. The outbreak of COVID-19 not only distanced people, families, and countries but also had many consequences on how we relate to each other. In this context, television was one of the sources of communication, entertainment, and bonding that resonated the most in times of crisis. This research aims to provide an in-depth study of the Spanish TV and VOD series born in the context of the pandemic to show how the discourse of COVID-19 has gone through the ways of consumption and entertainment and also through the fictional narratives. A content analysis of the series released since the beginning of the health crisis in March 2020 is carried out in order to establish formal, narrative, and other aspects of pandemic stories. The study intends to demonstrate that COVID-19 has become a discernible theme in Spanish television, both as a narrative core and as a transversal motif in subsequent productions.

El presente artículo recoge una comparativa alrededor de la representación de la familia en las series televisivas de las cadenas generalistas emitidas entre 1990 y 2010, coincidiendo con las décadas previa y posterior al cambio de siglo y teniendo en cuenta los factores de producción televisivo de la época en cuestión. En base a una metodología cualitativa que analiza las series con mayores éxitos de audiencia tanto dramáticas como cómicas, se comparan los modelos familiares imperantes con el fin de establecer si las particularidades del género afectan a la representación de las familias en las tramas narrativas. Los resultados apuntan mayor tendencia a la desestructuración de las familias en las comedias, si bien es cierto que las series dramáticas, cuando lo hacen, rompen de forma impetuosa el canon familiar establecido. This article collects a comparison of the family’s representation in the TV series of the generalist TV channels between 1990 and 2010, coinciding with the decades before and after the turn of the century. Based on a qualitative methodology that analyses the drama and comedy TV series with the most audience successes, the prevailing family models are compared in order to establish whether gender particularities affect the representation of families in narrative plots. The results show a greater tendency towards the destruction of families in comedies, although it is true that the dramatic series, when they do, impetuously break the established family canon. This work analyzes the representation of maternity on TV fiction, in order to provide a reflection about how they establish narratives that give meaning to women and their roles within different TV series. With this purpose, a qualitative methodology has been carried out, which analyzes six series of TV fiction, three from Spain and three from America, which at the same time are integrated into two border genres: drama and dramedy. The results indicate that, even though TV fiction incorporates new discourses introducing relevant topics for women today, the representation of motherhood continues to be portrayed from a traditional and patriarchal perspective. However, a certain narrative innovation has been observed in the case of American TV series. Resumen. El presente trabajo analiza la representación de la maternidad en las series de ficción televisiva, con el fin de aportar una reflexión acerca de cómo se configuran las narrativas que dan significado a la mujer y sus roles dentro de las series. Para ello, se ha trabajado sobre una metodología mixta, que conjuga datos cuantitativos con cualitativos, analizando un total de seis series de ficción­ —tres españolas y tres estadounidenses— que se integran en dos géneros fronterizos: el drama y el dramedy. Los resultados apuntan que, a pesar de que la ficción televisiva incorpora nuevas narrativas que introducen temas relevantes para las mujeres en la actualidad, la representación de la maternidad continúa reflejándose desde una perspectiva tradicional y patriarcal, aunque se observa cierta innovación, alejada de los roles tradicionales, a la hora de representar la maternidad en las series estadounidenses.
