In this study, saturation and spectral characteristics of a gain-clamped extended length L band (1570 nm-1605 nm) erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is presented. Firstly, the output ASE spectral characteristics of the extended length L band EDFA was analyzed for a wideband gain flattened operation. The amplification stage has a couple of symmetrical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) which provides a measured gain-clamped operation for a dynamic input signal power range of 26.1 dB at 1585 nm. In addition, the extended length structure of the proposed design provides a moderately flattened saturated gain spectrum throughout the L-Band with an average gain of 25 dB using moderate bidirectional pumping powers. The proposed L-band amplifier configuration achieves both high performance gain-clamped and gain-flattened operation to be used as a part of future wideband C+L band erbium doped fiber amplifiers.
