This study aimed to describe the gestational and morphological aspects of the fetuses and their respective umbilical cords from two pregnant wild boars (Sus scrofa). Morphological descriptions were provided for 23 fetuses and the gestational ages were estimated through fetal characteristics and formula application. The specimens were fixed in 10% formalin for subsequent macroscopic and microscopic examination. Histological characterization was performed using haematoxylin-eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome (MT) and Verhöeff's staining techniques. The wild boar fetuses exhibited an estimated gestational age of 55 days (in the larger uterus) and 45 days (in the smaller uterus). They displayed well-developed features consistent with domestic pig fetuses, except for the presence of five pairs of mammae. Additionally, the umbilical cord consisted of two arteries, one vein, an allantoic duct, and a vitelline duct (the latter two identified only microscopically), located in the juxtafetal, intermediate and juxtaplacental portions. The arteries and veins were comprised of endothelium, smooth muscle and collagen fibres, with no elastic fibres observed in the vessel walls. The allantoic duct was lined with simple cuboidal epithelium, while the vitelline duct featured a simple squamous epithelium. In conclusion, the morphological characteristics observed in the examined structures align with the expected patterns for species of the Suidae family. Furthermore, these findings contribute substantially to the morphological characterization of the wild boar, yielding valuable insights into the fetal morphology and the structure of the umbilical cord., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. The umbilical cord suspends the fetus within the amniotic cavity, where fetal dynamics is one of its many functions. Hence, the umbilical cord is a viable index in determining fetal activity. Fetal movements result in mechanical loads that are fundamental for fetal growth. At present, mechanical environment during early human fetal development is still largely unknown. To determine early fetal movement dynamics at given physiological (0.060 m) and pathological umbilical cord lengths (0.030 m, 0.020 m, 0.017 m and 0.014 m) a 2D computational model was created to simulate dynamic movement conditions. Main findings of this computational model revealed the shortest umbilical cord length (0.014 m) with a 6 ( 10 - 6 ) N , twitch force amplitude had a two-fold increase on linear velocity ( 0.12 m / s ) in comparison with other lengths ( 0.05 m / s ) . Moreover, umbilical cord length effect presented an increasing exponential tension on the fetus body wall from longest to shortest, from 0 N in the control length to 0.05 N for the shortest umbilical cord. Last, tension was always present over a period of time for the shortest cord (0.03 N to 0.08 N). Collectively, for all variables evaluated the shortest umbilical cord (0.014 m) presented remarkable differences with other lengths in particular with the second shortest umbilical cord (0.017 m), suggesting a 0.003 m difference represents a greater biomechanical effect. In conclusion, this computational model brings new insights required by clinicians, where the magnitude of these loads could be associated with different pathologies found in the clinic.

Introduction: Numerous studies have revealed the impact of umbilical cord (UC) length on fetal perfusion; abundant data implicate abnormal UC length to neurological delay and subsequent poor prognoses for fetuses and newborns. Indeed, our group previously developed theoretical approximations that contributed to formulas capable of explaining the impact of UC length on cardiac output., Methods: We performed an observational study that measured the pulsatility index and flow velocity in umbilical arteries. A special Doppler measured proximal and distal indexes in both arteries. After birth, medical staff measured complete UC length. We obtained maternal and neonatal outcomes from clinical records., Results: Our study enrolled 20 pregnant mothers. We found that flow velocities in the two edges were different: fetal edges exhibited greater velocity in the majority of cases; but, when we compared pressure differentials (ΔP), the pulsatility index was significantly related to umbilical cord length., Conclusions: Fetal perfusion, welfare, and viability are related to UC function as the conveyor of all fetal volemia. Excessive UC length affects cardiac dynamics and increases peripheral vascular resistance. Further studies could validate routine use of the differential proximal and distal measurements proposed in this article, and their implications in in utero fetal heart function. We also hope that early diagnosis or UC alterations could alert neonatologists and obstetricians to clinical conditions of the fetus.

The objective of the study was to find out correlation between umbilical cord diameter, cross sectional area with gestational age and foetal anthropometric parameters. This cross sectional study was conducted among healthy women between the 24(th) and 40(th) completed weeks of a normal pregnancy in the Department of Radiology & Imaging, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh during the study period, from July 2009 to June 2011. A total of 230 consecutive normal pregnancy patients were included in the study. The diameter & cross-sectional area of the umbilical cord were measured on a plane adjacent to the junction of the umbilical cord and the fetal abdomen, in cross-section, with maximum magnification of the image. The cord was manually circled, and it's cross sectional areas was automatically calculated by the ultrasonograph. The mean±SD age was 24.3±4.7 years with range from 19 to 36 years. The mean gestational age was 32.1±4.5 weeks and more than a half (56.4%) of the pregnant women were nulliparas. A positive significant (p<0.001) correlation were found between umbilical cord diameter with bi-parietal diameter (r=0.548); head circumference (r=0.411); abdominal circumference (r=0.444); femur length (r=0.366) and gestational age gestation age (r=0.643). Similarly, a significant (p<0.001) positive week correlation were found between umbilical cross sectional area with bi-parietal diameter (r=0.3303); head circumference (r=0.3202); abdominal circumference (r=0.2651); femur length (r=0.3307) and gestation age (r=0.4051). A positive significant better correlation was found with umbilical cord diameter than cross sectional area with foetal anthropometric parameters.

Objective: To determine bovine fetal characteristics significantly associated with increasing gestational age as measured via transcutaneous ultrasonography over the right flank., Methods: The length of gestation at date of pregnancy diagnosis via transcutaneous and transrectal ultrasonography was determined for 224 dairy cattle by estimation from subsequent calving dates. A separate dataset was created for each measurable fetal characteristic (i.e. thoracic diameter, abdominal diameter, umbilical diameter, placentome length and placentome height) and risk factors significantly associated with gestational age at pregnancy diagnosis within each dataset, including the fetal characteristic, were identified., Results: Abdominal diameter was the most frequently observed fetal characteristic and thoracic diameter was the least. Gestational age at pregnancy diagnosis (d) was significantly associated with fetal thoracic diameter (P < 0.01), abdominal diameter (P < 0.01) and umbilical diameter (P = 0.02) when measured via transcutaneous ultrasound. Within each model, sire breed, dam breed, dam age and/or calf sex were also significantly associated with gestational age. Gestational age at pregnancy diagnosis was not significantly associated with either placentome height or length (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: Fetal thoracic diameter, abdominal diameter and umbilical diameter were found to be significantly associated with gestational age between approximate days 73 to 190 of gestation. Transcutaneous ultrasonography may prove a useful method of estimating gestational age in the absence of accurate breeding records.

Fetal growth depends in part on placental growth. The authors tested placental measures derived from digital images for reliability and to evaluate their association with birth weight and gestational age. A total of 628 women recruited into the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition Study, a prospective cohort study of preterm birth in central North Carolina between 2002 and 2004, delivered singleton liveborn infants after 24 completed weeks' gestation. Novel chorionic plate morphometric parameters captured off digital images of the gross placenta were analyzed as estimators of gestational age and birth weight. Without acknowledgment to placental weight, digitally obtained lateral chorionic plate growth measures accounted for 17 percent of gestational age variance and 35 percent of birth weight variance, overall. Chorionic plate measures accounted for 10 percent of birth weight variance beyond that accounted for by placental weight alone. Among preterm births, 34 percent of gestational age variance and 63 percent of birth weight variance were accounted for by lateral chorionic plate growth measures. Intraclass correlation coefficients for the novel digital measures ranged from 0.96 to 0.98. Reliable digital measures of lateral chorionic plate growth estimate birth weight variance more strongly than gestational age, project variance that is not accounted for by placental weight, and project these outcomes to a greater degree in preterm births than at term.

True umbilical cord knot often remains undiscovered prenatally due to a lack of characteristic clinical or ultrasound signs. We present a pregnancy with favorable outcome in which a non-stress test (NST) found non-reassuring fetal status. Abnormal Doppler blood flow patterns in the descending aorta and in the middle cerebral artery revealed fetal arterial redistribution with normal circulation in the umbilical artery despite a true cord knot. The benefit of fetal Doppler assessment is discussed. Increased aortic-cerebral ratio may reflect acute hypoxic compromise caused by the transitory constriction of the true umbilical cord knot with unrecognized morphologic and circulatory signs.

Ultrasonographic prenatal diagnosis of single umbilical artery (UA) is well documented, but the exact siding of the single UA and its correlation with the occurrence of other congenital malformations and the outcome of the baby remain unclear. We report our experience with 46 cases of prenatally diagnosed single UA. This is the first prospective study of a large number of consecutive pregnancies in which the side of the existing artery was identified in fetuses with a single UA. Most of the cases were identified by transvaginal sonography at 14-16 weeks' gestation. A right artery was detected in 25 fetuses (54.3 per cent), and a left artery in 21 cases (45.7 per cent). Six fetuses (13 per cent) had associated anomalies, five of them in the urinary system. No correlation was found between the type or severity of the malformations and the side of the missing (or existing) UA. In our experience, the exact location of the single UA can be reliably determined by ultrasonography from the beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy. The selection process of the missing (or existing) vessel is likely to be random, even though a right single artery was seen slightly more often.

Objective: The null hypothesis is that fetuses with noncoiled umbilical cords diagnosed in the antepartum period will have outcomes no different from those with normally coiled cords., Study Design: We prospectively gathered data from Jan. 1 through May 18, 1992, from all fetuses undergoing routine ultrasonographic evaluation. The outcomes of fetuses noted to have noncoiled umbilical cords were compared with those of a control group of fetuses with normally coiled cords. The control group consisted of those subjects undergoing ultrasonography during the study period who were ultimately transferred to our perinatal practice for the remainder of the pregnancy (i.e., the highest-risk patients). Two outcome parameters were selected for comparison: fetal anomalies and fetal death., Results: Six hundred eighty-seven consecutive ultrasonographic examinations were performed. Twenty-five subjects (3.7%) had noncoiled umbilical cords identified ultrasonographically (mean gestational age at diagnosis 20.3 +/- 3.5 [SD] weeks). The control group had 197 subjects. The combined incidence of fetal anomalies or death in the noncoiled group (16%) was significantly greater (p < or = 0.05, relative risk 4.6 [95% confidence interval 1.41 to 14.15]) than that of the control group (3.5%). The noncoiled group had two fetal deaths (8%), whereas two deaths (1%) occurred among controls (p < or = 0.05, relative risk 8 [95% confidence interval 1.16 to 50]). Two (8%) fetal anomalies (anencephaly, prune-belly syndrome) occurred in the noncoiled group, whereas the controls (n = 197) had five fetuses (2.5%) with anomalies (not significant)., Conclusion: The antepartum identification of noncoiled umbilical cords appears to be a risk factor for suboptimal pregnancy outcome.

Nine patients who were 34-36 weeks pregnant underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Sagittal images using spin echo technique (TR 2.0 sec, TE 28 msec) were optimal for delineating fetal anatomy. The fetal cardiovascular, pulmonary, and central nervous systems were depicted in all cases. The heart and major vessels were readily seen due to the natural contrast of flowing blood. The intensity of the fluid-filled lungs greatly increased with a longer TR or TE, delimiting thorax from liver. The brain was relatively featureless due to the lack of gray-white matter differentiation. The umbilical cord within the amniotic fluid and its insertion into the placenta and fetus was identified in all cases. MR is a new modality for fetal imaging that offers tissue-characterization information that complements the superior anatomic detail of ultrasound scanning.

Ten fetuses underwent ultrasound scanning at 7-10 weeks gestational (postmenstrual) age. In all cases, an echogenic mass measuring 0.5-1.0 cm was demonstrated within the base of the umbilical cord at its insertion into the fetal abdomen. No area with echogenicity characteristic of the small bowel was identified within the lower part of the fetal abdomen. All fetuses were reexamined 4-12 weeks later, at which time the mass in the umbilical cord was no longer seen, and normal fetal bowel was visualized in the lower abdominal cavity of the fetus. This sequence of findings appears to represent the sonographic demonstration of normal fetal bowel migration early in gestation and should not be confused with defects of the abdominal wall such as omphalocele or gastroschisis.
