Surface complexation of arsenite (As(III)) on colloidal ferric hydroxide (CFH) plays an important role not only in the adsorptive immobilization of As(III) but also in the subsequent oxidation of As(III) to arsenate (As(V)) through light-induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) in water at near-neutral pH. However, the effects of natural organic matter (NOM), especially humic substances (HSs) and low molecular weight carboxylic acids (CAs), on the photochemistry of the CFH-As(III) system have not been sufficiently understood. In this work, the inhibition of photooxidation of As(III) in terms of the observed apparent rate constant (k obs ) by six HSs (below 16 mg L -1 ) and seven CAs (below 2.5 mM) has been observed in water containing 66 μM Fe(III) and 5 μM As(III) at pH 7 under simulated solar irradiation consisting of UVA (λ max 365 nm) and UVB (λ max 313 nm) lights. Total inhibition factors (T) have been determined from the combined effect of light-screening factor (S) and competitive complexation factor (C), wherein both S and C varied with NOM concentration. S was obtained by determining the absorbance of NOM, and C was obtained by fitting modified Langmuir or Freundlich models to the amount of As(III) desorbed from CFH upon the addition of NOM. Statistical analysis between the experimental T exp and the calculated one according to T cal  = S × C showed that the Freundlich model (RMSE for HS 0.1609 and for CA 0.1771) was better than the Langmuir model and was statistically robust (Q LOO 2 = 0.691 > 0.5). In this work, the photo reactivity of ferric oxalate (Fe(III)-Ox) complex in atmospheric particles was investigated. Raman spectroscopy was used to explore the mechanism and kinetics of Fe(III)-Ox photolysis occurring at the aqueous/gas interface, inside the droplet and in bulk solution. Ferrous carbonate (FeCO 3 ) was detected indicating that carbonate ion (CO 3 2- ) formed inside the droplets would compete with oxalate ligands for iron complexation. A higher concentration of photoproduct Fe(II)-Ox was observed at the surface and inside of the droplets than in bulk solution. In particular, Fe(III)-Ox on the droplet surface was quickly reduced with light and Fe(II)-Ox concentration gradually decreased with irradiation time. The evolution of Fe(II)-Ox concentration was similar inside the droplet and in bulk solution with a trend of first increasing and then gradually decreasing during irradiation time. Although FeCO 3 would hinder Fenton intermediate reaction, the photolysis rate of Fe(III)-Ox in droplets was almost two orders of magnitude times faster than that observed during bulk experiment. In general, the photolysis mechanism and kinetics of Fe(III)-Ox in aqueous/air interface, inside of droplet and bulk solution were distinct, and the production of oxide species from the atmospheric Fe(III)-Ox droplets was underestimated., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, for the first time, the nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene-(20)-sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80, C 64 H 124 O 26 ) aided soil washing effluent was treated by enhanced activation of persulfate (PS) using Fe(III)-EDDS (EDDS: ethylenediamine-N, N-disuccinic acid) complexes under simulated solar light irradiation. The performance of this system was followed via the production and reactivity of radical species (SO 4 - , HO, Cl 2 - ) and degradation of phenanthrene (PHE) used as a model pollutant in soils. Different physico-chemical parameters such as the concentration of reactive species and pH were investigated through the PHE degradation efficiency. The second-order rate constants of the reactions for generated radicals with PHE and Tween 80 in solution were identified through competitive reaction experiments under steady-state conditions and application of nanosecond laser flash photolysis (LFP) as well. A kinetic approach was applied to assess the selectivity and reactivity of photo-generated radicals in aqueous medium in order to explain the observed degradation trends. The present work compares the efficiency of homogenous Fenton and photo-Fenton processes in the presence of Fe(III)-EDDS complex under different experimental conditions. 4-tert-Butylphenol (4-t-BP), which is one of the endocrine disrupting chemicals, was used as a model pollutant to investigate the Fenton and photo-Fenton application. The efficiency of homogenous photo-Fenton process was significantly much higher than homogenous Fenton process, which is due to the rapid formation of Fe(2+) under UV irradiation of the iron complex and the photochemical formation of HO(•) from the photolysis of the complex Fe(III)-EDDS. Through the degradation of 4-t-BP, the effect of Fe(III)-EDDS concentration, H2O2 concentration, pH, and oxygen was investigated in both processes. Such trend was also correlated with pH calculating the polychromatic Fe(2+) quantum yield formation at pH 4.0, 6.0, and 8.6. The results showed that at high Fe(III)-EDDS and H2O2 concentrations, a negative effect was found. By the way, the Fenton process was found to be enhanced at basic pH. These results can be very useful for the use and optimization of such iron complex in water treatment process as function of different physico-chemical conditions.

The composition and photochemical properties of the Fe(III)-Pyr complexes in the aqueous solution was studied in this work. Fe(III) was complexed by Pyr in the ratio of 1:3. The photochemical processes occurred in the Fe(III)-Pyr system was studied in detail. Fe(II) was the main intermediate product. DMPO was used as scavenger to determine the active radicals, such as *OH, CO3*-, CO2*-, H and RCO2* by ESR. Photodegradation of atrazine induced by the photolysis of Fe(III)-Pyr was studied and the reaction kinetics fitted the first order reaction. Parameters such as pH, the initial concentrations of Fe(III), pyruvate (Pyr) and atrazine were all investigated. Photoproducts were detected by the LC-MS and the photodegradation scheme was proposed. *OH radical was the main pathway of atrazine degradation.

Aminopolycarboxylic acids are ubiquitous in natural waters and wastewaters. They have the ability to form very stable water-soluble complexes with many metallic di- or trivalent ions. The iron complex nitrilotriacetic acid-Fe(III) (FeNTA) has been previously shown to increase drastically the rate of photo- and biodegradation of 2-aminobenzothiazole, an organic pollutant, by Rhodococcus rhodochrous. For this paper, the fate of FeNTA was investigated during these degradation processes. First, it was shown, using in situ (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance, that the complex FeNTA was biodegraded by Rhodococcus rhodochrous cells, but the ligand (NTA) alone was not. This result indicates that FeNTA was transported and biotransformed inside the cell. The same products, including iminodiacetic acid, glycine, and formate, were obtained during the photo- and biodegradation processes of FeNTA, likely because they both involve oxidoreduction mechanisms. When the results of the different experiments are compared, the soluble iron, measured by spectrophotometry, was decreasing when microbial cells were present. About 20% of the initial iron was found inside the cells. These results allowed us to propose detailed mechanistic schemes for FeNTA degradation by solar light and by R. rhodochrous.

The mechanisms of the interactions between Fe(III) aquacomplexes and surfactants were investigated; three alkylbenzenzsulfonates, two surfactants (octylbenzenesulfonate (OBS) and dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS)), and a shorter derivative (ethylbenzenesulfonate (EBS)) were studied. The results with OBS show evidence for three different ways in which Fe(III) interferes with the surfactant: the widely described flocculation process, complexation of Fe(OH)2+ (aquacomplexes) by the surfactant, and a redox reaction. The formation of a weak complex is maximum for a ratio of three between the monomeric aquacomplex [FeOH(H2O)5]2+ and OBS. In the presence of oxygen, an intramolecular redox reaction occurs inside the complex. The interaction between commercial DBS and Fe(III) was also investigated. Immediate precipitation occurred, mainly involving derivatives of higher molecular weights that are contained in the DBS samples. The constituents with the shortest alkyl chain were not affected by the presence of Fe(III) as it was also observed with EBS.

The transformation of 2-aminobenzothiazole (ABT) was studied under various conditions: (i) a photodegradation process at a lambda of >300 nm in the presence of an Fe(III)-nitrilotriacetic acid complex (FeNTA), (ii) a biodegradation process using Rhodococcus rhodochrous OBT18 cells, and (iii) the combined processes (FeNTA plus Rhodococcus rhodochrous in the presence or absence of light). The transformation of ABT in the combined system, with or without light, was much more efficient (99% degradation after 25 h) than in the separated systems (37% photodegradation and 26% biodegradation after 125 h). No direct photolysis of ABT was observed. The main result seen is the strong positive impact of FeNTA on the photodegradation, as expected, and on the biotransformation efficiency of ABT, which was more surprising. This positive impact of FeNTA on the microbial metabolism was dependent on the FeNTA concentration. The use of UV high-performance liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and in situ (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance provided evidence of the intermediary products and thus established transformation pathways of ABT in the different processes. These pathways were identical whether the degradation process was photo- or biotransformation. A new photoproduct was identified (4OH-ABT), corresponding to a hydroxylation reaction on position 4 of the aromatic ring of ABT.

The behaviour of 4,4'-bis(2-sulfostyryl)biphenyl (DSBP), a fluorescent whitening agent, was investigated in the presence of Fe(III) aquacomplexes at room temperature. In the dark, a two-step reaction was observed when adding Fe(III) to a solution of DSBP: an initial fast redox reaction between DSBP and the monomeric species Fe(OH)(2+) and a slower reaction leading to the coagulation of oxidised DSBP and iron. This phenomenon is due to the formation of a complex or an ion-pair between Fe(II) and/or Fe(III) with oxidised DSBP and it probably occurs by charge neutralisation in our experimental conditions. The precipitation of DSBP depends on the initial concentration in Fe(OH)(2+) and is achieved for a ratio [Fe(OH) (2+)]/[DSBP] of 5 approximately. Under irradiation at 365 nm, a complicated behaviour was observed: a complexation of iron by oxidised DSBP favoured by irradiation and a degradation of DSBP induced by an intramolecular electron transfer in the complex or by a photoredox of Fe(OH)(2+) species generating .OH radicals in the supernatant. The complete degradation of DSBP is reached four times faster in the presence of Fe(III) with respect to the direct photolysis of DSBP alone. Moreover, the total mineralization of DSBP obtained in less than 120 h upon irradiation at 365 nm is only observed in the presence of the ferric ions, enlightening the efficiency of the method involving Fe(III) and UV irradiation.

The degradation of Monuron (3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) photoinduced by Fe(III) in aqueous solution has been investigated. The rate of degradation depends on the concentration of Fe(OH)2+, the most photoreactive species in terms of *OH radical formation. These *OH radicals are able to degrade Monuron until total mineralisation. The primordial role of the speciation of Fe(III)-hydroxy complex in aqueous solution, for the efficiency of the elimination of pollutant, was shown and explained in detail. The formation of Fe(II) in the irradiated solution was monitored and correlated with the total organic carbon evolution. Degradation photoproducts were identified and a mechanism of degradation is proposed.

In this work, the comparison of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation by two different AOT processes has been performed: a) a homogeneous system with Fe(III)-NTA (1:1 complex), b) a TiO2/Fe(III)-NTA heterogeneous system. In both cases, NTA appears to play a positive role in the photochemical reaction. In the homogeneous system, the iron salt is the only absorbing species and is proved to be able to photoinduce 4-CP degradation ([4-CP] = 0.1-0.2 mM, [FeNTA] = 0.3-0.9 mM, pH 4, lambda = 365 nm). The progress of the reaction was positively affected by the FeNTA concentration, and the reaction kept going even after the total disappearance of FeNTA. However, 4-CP complete degradation requires the presence of oxygen, otherwise the reaction stops. In the heterogeneous system ([4-CP] = 2.0 mM, [FeNTA] = 1.0-2.0 mM, [TiO2] = 0.1 and 1.0 g L(-1), pH 3, lambda = 300-400 nm), an important effect of the complex on the degradation extent and on the initial reaction rate can be seen, which overcomes the effect of non-complexed Fe(III). This behaviour is more important at the highest TiO2 concentration.

Fe(III)-photoinduced degradation of two different supramolecular host-guest complexes, naphthalene with alpha-cyclodextrin and 4-chloroaniline with p-sulfonic-calix[4]arene; was studied in aqueous solution. The stoichiometries, equilibrium constants and conformations of these complexes were characterized. In both cases, the degradation of the guest could not be accounted for by simple competition kinetics of OH radical attack on the guest and host molecules, respectively. This observation was explained by the occurrence of subsequent radical reactions of transients resulting from an OH attack onto the host molecule, which are assumed to be able to induce additional degradation reactions of the guest. An inhibiting influence of the calix[4]arene host on the abundance of oligomeric degradation intermediates of 4-chloroaniline was observed.

The degradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) photoinduced by Fe(III) in aqueous solutions has been investigated under solar irradiation in the compound parabolic collector reactor at Plataforma Solar de Almeria. Hydroxyl radicals *OH, responsible of the degradation, are formed via an intramolecular photoredox process in the excited state of Fe(III) aquacomplexes. The primary step of the reaction is mainly due to the attack of *OH radicals on the aromatic ring. For prolonged irradiations DEP and its photoproducts are completely mineralized due to the regeneration of the absorbing species and the continuous formation of *OH radicals that confers a catalytic aspect to the process. Consequently, the degradation photoinduced by Fe(III) could be an efficient method of DEP removal from water.

The degradation of the herbicide asulam (4-amino-benzosulfonyl-methylcarbamate) was studied by excitation of iron (III) aquacomplexes in aqueous solutions at 365 nm as well as by exposition to solar light. Sulfanilamide was also studied as a model molecule. The initial step of asulam disappearance was shown to be due to the formation of hydroxyl radicals generated from the excitation of Fe(OH)2+, the most photoactive iron (III) monomeric species. However, when the iron (III) species was totally photoreduced to iron (II), the degradation of asulam in the presence of oxygen continued to completion. A photoreactivity of iron (II) species and/or iron (II) complexes under our experimental conditions was proposed. The experimental results indicate that the presence of iron (III), iron (II) and molecular oxygen is the condition for achieving the complete mineralization of the solution. The proposed photocatalytic cycle could provide an interesting tool for oxidations in the environment.

The degradation of isoproturon photoinduced by Fe(III) was investigated under both artificial and solar light. The monomeric species Fe(OH)2+ present under the experimental conditions ([Fe(III)] = 3 x 10(-4) M) is the main Fe(III) species responsible for the degradation of isoproturon. The process involves the attack on the pollutant by OH radicals generated by irradiation of Fe(OH)2+. The major primary photoproducts were identified; they accumulate in the solution medium before being degraded. The toxicity of the solution to marine bacterium Vibrio fisheri (Beijerinck) Lehmann & Neumann was monitored during the degradation process. It increased in the early stages of the reaction and, among the photoproducts, the N-formyl derivative appeared to be the major product responsible for the increase in toxicity.

The Fe(III)-photoinduced degradation of 4-dodecylbenzenesulphonate (DBS) in aqueous solution was investigated. The mixing of DBS (1 mm) and Fe(III) (1 mm) solutions immediately led to the formation of a precipitate that contained DBS and monomeric Fe(OH)2+, the predominant Fe(III) species. Both species were also present in the supernatant. Irradiation of the supernatant solution resulted in a photoredox process that yielded Fe(II) and *OH radicals. The disappearance of DBS was shown to involve only attack by *OH radicals; the quantum yield of DBS disappearance is similar to the quantum yield of *OH radical formation. A wavelength effect was also observed; the rate of DBS disappearance was higher for shorter wavelength irradiation. Five photoproducts, all containing the benzene sulphonate group, were identified. *OH radicals preferentially abstract hydrogen from the carbon in the alpha position of the aromatic ring. The results show that the Fe(III)-photoinduced degradation of DBS could be used as an alternative method for polluted water treatment.
