Axial length (AL) is an important contributor to refraction, and growth curves are gaining importance in the prediction of myopia. This study aimed to profile the distribution of ocular biometry parameters and to identify correlates of spherical equivalent refraction (SE) among school children in South India.The School Children Ocular Biometry and Refractive Error study was conducted as part of a school screening program in southern India. The enrolled children underwent tests that included vison check, refraction, binocular vision assessment, and biometry measurements.The study included 1382 children whose mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 10.18 (2.88) years (range: 5-16 years). The sample was divided into 4 groups (grades 1-2, grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grade 10) based on significant differences in right AL (p0.001). The mean (SD) AL (range: 20.33-27.27 mm) among the four groups was 22.50 (0.64) mm, 22.88 (0.69) mm, 23.30 (0.82) mm, and 23.58 (0.87) mm, respectively. The mean SE (range: +1.86 to -6.56 D) was 0.08 (0.65 D) in class 1 and decreased with increasing grade to -0.39 (1.20 D) in grade 10. There was a significant difference in all biometry parameters between boys and girls (p0.001). Age, AL, and mean corneal curvature were the main predictors of SE.This study provides a profile of ocular biometry parameters among school children in South India for comparison against profiles from other regions across the country. The study data will form a reference for future studies assessing myopia in this ethnicity.

To evaluate the effect of pharmacologic pupil dilation on the quality of axial length (AL) measurement in patients with dense cataracts and previous low-quality AL measurements performed without dilation.Shaare-Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel.Retrospective case series.All participants underwent swept-source optical coherence tomographic (SS-OCT) biometry. Those with low-quality AL measurements due to dense cataract underwent an additional SS-OCT biometric evaluation after pupil dilation, and the AL measurement of the same eye was recorded.2076 patients underwent SS-OCT during the study period, and 177 (8.52%) had low-quality AL measurements because of dense cataract. 79 (44.63%, mean age 72.53 ± 13.27 years, 43 females) of those 177 patients underwent repeat SS-OCT biometric imaging after pharmacologic pupil dilation, and formed the study group. After pupil dilation, high-quality AL measurements were successfully obtained in 60 (75.95%) of the 79 eyes. The mean SD of the AL measurements decreased significantly ( Pamp;lt; .001), and the number of successful OCT scans per measurement increased significantly ( Pamp;lt; .001) after pupil dilation. The mean difference of the AL before and after pupil dilation was 0.03 ± 0.07 mm ( Pamp;lt; .001).Pharmacologic pupil dilation improved the quality of SS-OCT biometrically measured AL in patients with low-quality AL measurement due to dense cataract. These results could potentially improve postoperative refractive outcomes after cataract surgery and reduce the need of additional AL measurements by more complicated alternative means in this group.

This was an observational study of low-risk singleton pregnancies in an ethnic Chinese population. Foetal biometric variables which included biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL) were measured repeatedly. The standard views for measurement were obtained according to INTERGROWTH-21st criteria. A linear mixed model with fractional polynomial regression was used to describe the longitudinal design. The study included 1289 foetuses and a total of 5125 ultrasound scans, of which each foetus was scanned at least three times, the intervals between scans being at least two weeks. The parameters of the linear mixed models were estimated by Stata v.16 (College Station, TX). Using these parameters, the equations of the mean and variance for BPD, HC, AC and FL were constructed. OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common metabolic complication of pregnancy. The incidence of GDM is increasing worldwide and 5-25% of pregnancies are diagnosed with GDM depending on screening strategies and diagnostic criteria. GDM may lead to obstetric complications and increases the risk of adult metabolic disease in the offspring. Timely identification of GDM allows for regulation of maternal glucose levels which may reduce the obstetric complications considerably. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between second trimester ultrasound biometrics and GDM.STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study including 2697 singleton pregnancies attending second trimester ultrasound scan at 20 + 0 to 20 + 6 weeks' gestation and giving birth at Aalborg University Hospital in the year 2020. Ultrasound measurements included head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) by Hadlock's formula. Women with pregestational diabetes were excluded. GDM screening was performed on indication using oral-glucose-tolerance-test (OGTT) including 75 g glucose and a 2-hour serum glucose value ≥ 9 mmol/L was considered diagnostic. The association between fetal biometrics and GDM was investigated by logistic regression.RESULTS: A total of 174 (6.5 %) were diagnosed with GDM. The incidence of GDM in pregnancies with biometrics above the 90th centile was; FL: 10.5 %, HC: 8.8 %, AC: 7.6 %, EFW: 9.3 %. Fetal biometrics above the 90th centile was significantly associated with GDM; ORFL = 2.07, p = 0.001; ORHC = 1.89, p = 0.001; ORAC = 1.63, p = 0.033; OREFW = 1.64, p = 0.036. This association remained significant for HC and FL when adjusted for maternal obesity (Body Mass Index ≥ 27): ORHC(adj)=1.56, p = 0.019; ORFL(adj) = 1.57, p = 0.049.CONCLUSION: At the second trimester scan, fetal biometrics above the 90th centile increase the risk of GDM. In pregnancies that are later diagnosed with GDM fetal growth is increased already at the second trimester scan. Such knowledge underlines the importance of early identification of GDM.

Purpose. To compare the total corneal astigmatism (TCA) measured by IOLMaster 700 and Pentacam and to investigate the consistency of corneal keratometry (CK) measured by IOLMaster and Pentacam. Methods. Cataract patients were retrospectively enrolled in March and April, 2021. Retrospective analysis was performed on those patients with binocular and monocular CK measured by IOLMaster and Pentacam. Results. A total of 102 patients (204 eyes) were included, 64 of whom were female (62.75%). The flat (K1) and steep (K2) CK of anterior corneal surface (ACS) and flat (TK1) and steep (TK2) of total cornea measured with IOLMaster 700 were 44.16 ± 1.60 D , 45.09 ± 1.68 D , 44.12 ± 1.62 D , and 45.14 ± 1.69 D , respectively. Those measured with Pentacam were 44.31 ± 1.57 D , 45.22 ± 1.65 D , 44.15 ± 1.67 D , and 45.19 ± 1.82 D , respectively. The astigmatism of ACS and TCA were − 0.94 ± 0.63 D and − 1.02 ± 0.69 D ( p < 0.01 ) in the IOLMaster group and − 0.90 ± 0.59 D and − 1.05 ± 0.81 D in the Pentacam group, respectively ( p < 0.01 ). TCA measurement results of IOLMaster and Pentacam were consistent ( Pearson = 0.710 , p < 0.01 ), and there was no significant difference ( p = 0.591 ). Conclusions. Total corneal astigmatism measured by IOLMaster was consistent with that measured by Pentacam. The difference between the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface and total cornea was detected in the measurement of IOLMaster and Pentacam, respectively.

To compare ocular biometric parameters between Hispanic and non-Hispanic White adult patients undergoing cataract surgery.We included 433 adult patients undergoing surgery for senile cataract. Only patients with race and ethnicities of Hispanic and non-Hispanic White were included. The following parameters measured by the IOLMaster 700 were compared between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients: mean keratometry, corneal astigmatism, anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness, vitreous length, axial length, white-to-white diameter, and emmetropic intraocular lens power.There were 219 Hispanic patients and 214 non-Hispanic patients with a mean age of 70.1±7.7 years (range, 50-88 years), and 66.7% were women. Although sex distribution was similar between the two groups, Hispanic patients had a lower age compared with non-Hispanic patients (69.3±8.3 vs. 70.9±6.9 years, P=0.02). In biometric values, ACD was significantly lower in Hispanic patients (3.07±0.40 mm) than in non-Hispanic patients (3.16±0.37 mm, P=0.01). Such statistically significant difference persisted after adjustment for age and sex (P=0.01). No other significant differences were found in other ocular parameters measured.Anterior chamber depth is significantly shorter in Hispanic patients compared with non-Hispanic patients. Such ethnic difference should be considered when performing cataract and corneal surgeries because this ethnic difference may be associated with a higher risk of corneal endothelial injury.

Introduction Objectives were to analyze changes in fetal cephalic biometry and fetoplacental circulation throughout pregnancy in fetuses with congenital heart defects. Material and methods Prospective study conducted on three university tertiary referral hospitals. Fetuses with the diagnosis of isolated congenital heart defects attending between 2014 and 2018 were included. Congenital heart defects were divided into two groups according to the oxygen supply to the central nervous system: group I (expected low placental blood content and low oxygen delivery to the brain) and group II (expected intermediate and high placental blood content). Fetal biometry and Doppler parameters were collected between 25-30 weeks of gestation and 34-40 weeks of gestation and transformed into Z scores. The results were compared with healthy controls. Finally, general linear modeling was performed to analyze repeated measurements. Results In all, 71 fetuses met the inclusion criteria. Fetuses with congenital heart defects had significantly smaller head (biparietal diameter [p < 0.001], head circumference [p = 0.001]) and abdominal circumference (p < 0.001), and lower estimated fetal weight (p < 0.001) than controls. When analyzing according to congenital heart defects type, head size was significantly smaller in group I compared with group II (p = 0.04). Regarding Doppler parameters, fetuses with congenital heart defects showed higher umbilical artery pulsatility index (p < 0.001) and lower cerebroplacental ratio (p = 0.044) than controls. In group I, umbilical artery pulsatility index was above the 95th centile in 15.4% of fetuses compared with 6.7% in group II and 1.9% in controls (p < 0.001); moreover, middle cerebral artery pulsatility index was below the 5th centile in 5.4% of group I fetuses compared with 0% in group II and 1.2% in controls (p = 0.011). General linear model for two measurements showed significant longitudinal changes in biometric parameters. Growth rate of fetal head through pregnancy (head circumference Z score) was lower in fetuses with congenital heart defects compared with controls (p = 0.043). In group I, the head circumference Z score longitudinal decrease was significantly higher than in group II (p < 0.001). Conclusions Fetuses with congenital heart defects are at risk of smaller head size and Doppler changes. Growth rate of fetal head throughout pregnancy is also affected. These findings are mainly associated with cardiac defects with expected low oxygen supply to the central nervous system.

To determine if early-onset fetal growth restriction with abnormal individual biometric parameters, defined as head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length less than the 10th percentile, is associated with adverse neonatal outcomes compared to fetal growth restriction with normal biometric parameters.Retrospective cohort study including women diagnosed with fetal growth restriction between 16 and 24 weeks gestation who delivered a singleton, non-anomalous neonate at Mount Sinai Hospital from 2013 to 2019. The primary outcome was rate of small for gestational age neonate at delivery. Maternal, obstetric and neonatal outcomes were compared using multivariable regression analysis.Patients diagnosed with fetal growth restriction with abnormal biometric parameters were more likely to be nulliparous, diagnosed with severe growth restriction and to receive antenatal corticosteroids than those with normal biometric parameters. The rate of small for gestational age neonate at delivery was higher in those with abnormal parameters (OR 4.0, 95% CI 1.7-9.2, p 0.01) when compared to normal parameters. The rate of resolution of fetal growth restriction was higher in the normal biometric parameter group compared to those with abnormal parameters (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.4-8.1, p 0.01).Fetal growth restriction and normal biometric parameters diagnosed at second trimester ultrasound is associated with an increased likelihood of resolution of growth restriction and decreased likelihood of delivering a small for gestational age neonate.

A table was generated, based on foetal ultrasonographic measurements in light breed mares, for each day of gestation beginning with day 100, to provide the predicted value of four biometric parameters: biparietal diameter (BPD), eye approximated volume (EyV), foetal aortic diameter (AortD) and femur length (FL). Using this table, day of gestation was successfully predicted in 23 Quarter Horses (QH) with known mating or ovulation dates. BPD, EyV and FL were the best foetal age predictors between 100- and 200-days gestation predicting within 2 weeks of the actual day of gestation, while BPD and EyV were best between 200 and 300 days (within 3 weeks), and EyV was best after 300 days (within 3 weeks).

Objective To compare the fetal brain structures assessed in routine sonographic scans during the second and third trimesters in fetuses with and without congenital heart disease (CHD). Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional single-center study. We measured the head circumference (HC), the transversal diameter of the cerebellum (TCD) and the sizes of the cisterna magna (CM), the cavum septi pellucidi (CSP) and the posterior ventricles (PV) between 20 and 41 weeks of gestation. We compared 160 fetuses with CHD (case group) to 160 fetuses of normal pregnancies (control group). Every patient was matched with a control, considering the gestational age at which the ultrasound was performed. We divided the CHD group into 3 subgroups: retrograde flow in the aortic arch (group 1), right heart anomaly with the antegrade flow in the aortic arch (group 2) and other CHDs with the antegrade flow in the aortic arch (group 3). Results The mean width of the PV was larger in fetuses of groups 1 and 3 in comparison to the control group (P P = 0.022; respectively). We found that the APGAR score at 5 min (P P P = 0.006, P = 0.001; respectively) were inferior in groups 1 and 3 compared to controls. Conclusions Central nervous system biometry is altered in fetuses with CHD. PV is enlarged in CHD fetuses especially with decreased oxygen levels in the aortic arch.

The aim of the study was to construct a reference range for the Lithuanian population for fetal biparietal diameter (BPD), occipitofrontal diameter (OFD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL) and to compare them with the old local and current international reference values.A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out in secondary referral centres Vilnius University Hospital Santariškių Klinikos Centro Affiliate in 2008-2009 and Vilnius Maternity Hospital in 2009-2014. The fetal biometry of 556 fetuses between 12 and 42 weeks gestation was performed. BPD, OFD, HC, AC and FL were measured. The data were collected and the analysis was performed using statistical programs MS Excel, SPSS and Matlab. Different regression models were fitted to calculate the mean and standard deviation at each gestational age for each parameter.The biometric measurements of HC, BPD, OFD as well as AC and FL were performed for 556 fetuses. The centile charts, tables and regression formulae of the biometric parameters were constructed. The comparison of the current charts with those of other two studies revealed no significant differences of HC centiles. AC values were similar to those presented in the international study INTERGROWTH-21 and significantly higher in comparison to the study for the Lithuanian population conducted by Ališauskas (1980). FL values, especially in late pregnancy, were significantly smaller in the INTERGROWTH-21 study compared to our charts; however, there were no significant differences of the 50th centile compared to the results from Ališauskas.We have constructed and presented centile charts, tables and regression formulae for fetal biometry for the Lithuanian population and compared them with the results of two other studies. The significant differences between our centile charts and those from INTERGROWTH-21 imply the necessity to have local standards of fetal biometry, while the differences of our results from the older study in the same population show the importance of updating fetal biometry reference charts for every generation.

Background To investigate the associations between anterior segment biometry and high axial myopia in cataractous eyes in the Chinese population. Methods Data on 3438 eyes from 3438 subjects were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Anterior segment biometry, axial length measurements, and intraocular pressure evaluation were implemented using an Oculus Pentacam HR, a Zeiss IOLMaster 500, and a Nidek TonoRef II, respectively. A multivariate-adjusted logistic model and a multivariate-adjusted linear model were used for statistical analysis. Results The mean age of the subjects was 62.2 ± 10.6 years, and 56.4% were female. There were 2665 subjects with high axial myopia (axial length, ≥26.50 mm) and 773 without (axial length, P P Conclusions For cataractous eyes, high axial myopia was associated with corneal flattening, increased total corneal astigmatism, anterior segment enlargement, and intraocular pressure elevation. The findings may inform the choice of intraocular lenses and the calculation of their power, help improve the surgical practice of refractive cataract procedures, and provide useful information on the centration and stability of intraocular lenses.

BACKGROUND: One key factor proven to increase quality of pregnancy outcome has been antenatal care (ANC) service. The perinatal triad of mother, placenta and fetus becomes functionally complete with a functional umbilical cord. The objective of the study was to establish mathematical models to predict the outcome of umbilical cord morphometric parameters using maternal first antenatal care visit biometric indices. METHOD: This analytical descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 240 pregnant women who attended antenatal care for the first time in their first trimester at the Victory Maternity Home and Clinic in the Kumasi Metropolis, between April 2016 and October 2019. Umbilical cord length, diameter, area, volume and weight were measured after delivery. Maternal first antenatal care visit blood pressure was taken and their non-fasting blood samples were collected and lipid profile done. RESULTS: Mean values for umbilical cord measurements were; cord length, 38.10±7.86 cm; diameter, 1.04±0.17 cm; area, 66.10±24.49 cm2 and volume was 34.02±11.16 cm3 respectively while mean cord weight was 65.01±21.35 g. The study found that a unit increase in total cholesterol led to an increase of 2.33 units in umbilical cord length, high-density lipoprotein also resulted in 0.06 units increase in cord diameter while low-density lipoprotein decreases cord length by 3.31 units. Also, a unit increase in maternal booking total cholesterol resulted in 2.33 units increase in umbilical cord length. CONCLUSION: Maternal first antenatal care visit total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein could influence the outcome of umbilical cord length, diameter and area.

Current US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intramuscular injection needle length guidelines for injection fo the deltoid muscle are based on weight and gender. The aims of this study are (1) to evaluate whether other biometric data (age, gender, height, weight and body mass index (BMI)) are better predictors of the thickness of the deltoid subcutaneous fat pad (DSFP) than weight and gender and (2) to evaluate the performance of the CDC weight-based needle length guidelines. This was a retrospective single center cohort study of 386 patients who underwent surveillance PET/CT between 01/01/2020 and 04/01/2021. To study the distribution of ocular biometric parameters using a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometer in adult candidates for cataract surgery.A retrospective cross-sectional study.This is a single-center analysis of consecutive eyes measured with the IOLMaster 700 SS-OCT biometer at a large tertiary medical center between February 2018 and June 2020.Three thousand eight hundred thirty-six eyes of 3836 patients were included in the study. The mean ± SD age was 72.3 ± 12.8 years and 53% were female. The mean biometric values were as follows: total corneal power (44.17 ± 1.70 diopters [D]), total corneal astigmatism (TCA; 1.11 ± 0.87 D), mean posterior keratometry (-5.87 ± 0.26 D), posterior corneal astigmatism (-0.26 ± 0.15 D), axial length (AL; 23.95 ± 1.66 mm), anterior chamber depth (ACD; 3.18 ± 0.42 mm), lens thickness (LT; 4.49 ± 0.47 mm), white-to-white distance (WTW; 11.92 ± 0.44 mm), central corneal thickness (CCT; 0.54 ± 0.04 mm), angle alpha (0.49 ± 0.17 mm), and angle kappa (0.34 ± 0.17 mm). There were sex-related differences in all biometric parameters save for LT (P = .440), angle kappa (P = .216), and corneal astigmatism (P = .103). Biometric parameters demonstrated correlations between AL, WTW distance, ACD, and LT (P.001). Age correlated with all parameters (P.001) except CCT and posterior keratometry. Angle alpha and angle kappa magnitudes also correlated (P.001). The prevalence of patients with TCA ≥0.75 D, 1.0 D, and 1.5 D were 59.1%, 43.4%, and 22.6%, respectively.Age significantly correlated with most of the biometric parameters and significant differences between sexes were noted. In addition, the high prevalence of TCA and relatively large angle alpha and angle kappa magnitudes were noted among subjects. These data can be relevant in planning local and national health economics.

Introduction: Uncorrected refractive error is one of the major causes of visual impairment in children and adolescents worldwide. During the COVID-19 epidemic, home isolation is considered a boost to the progression of children’s myopia. Under geographical conditions of high altitude and strong sunshine, the Tibetan plateau is the main residence of the Tibetan population, where little information is available about the refractive status and developmental trajectory. Therefore, this article aimed to evaluate the distribution, progression, and associated factors of the refractive status in second-grade children in Lhasa after COVID-19 quarantine. Materials and Methods: Students from 7 elementary schools completed comprehensive ocular examinations in the Lhasa Childhood Eye Study. Data regarding cycloplegic refraction and corneal biometry parameters, including axial length (AL), corneal power, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and other demographic factors, were analyzed. Results: A total of 1,819 students were included, with a mean age of 7.9 ± 0.5 years, of which 961 were boys (52.8%), and 95.1% were Tibetan. The prevalence of myopia, emmetropia, mild hyperopia, and hyperopia was 10.94%, 24.02%, 60.80%, and 4.24%, respectively. Besides, the average cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) was +1.07 ± 0.92 diopter (D) before the COVID-19 quarantine and +0.59 ± 1.08D after the quarantine (p < 0.05), with a growth rate of 7%. Moreover, the prevalence of hyperopia in girls was significantly higher than that of boys (p < 0.001). Nonetheless, the proportion of myopia and emmetropia was similar (p = 0.75). Meanwhile, children in suburban schools had a significantly lower proportion of myopia (p < 0.001). The average AL, ACD, lens power (LP), and AL-to-corneal radius (AL/CR) ratio were 22.79 ± 0.78 mm, 3.54 ± 0.21 mm, 25.12 ± 1.48D, and 2.93 ± 0.08, respectively. The results of AL, ACD, and AL/CR for girls were significantly lower than for boys, while the result of LP is the opposite (p < 0.001). Finally, multivariate regression analysis revealed that SER was negatively correlated with AL, LP, and AL/CR ratio, while positively correlated with CR and ACD (p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study found that after the COVID-19 confinement, myopia progressed faster in Lhasa children but was still significantly lower than that of plain cities in China. Compared to short-term confinement, this acceleration was more likely related to the growth and general trend of myopia in children. Collectively, these findings help to explore the differences in ocular growth and development among children of different ethnic groups.

Aims The objective of this study was to provide follow-up data on four-dimensional ultrasound (4DUS) morphometry for women having botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) treatment of pelvic floor tension myalgia (PFTM). Materials and methods A prospective cohort study was performed from October 2013 to June 2018, recruiting women scheduled for BoNT-A injection in the pelvic floor musculature. Translabial 4DUS, vaginal pressure assessment by manometry and pain visual analog scales (VAS) were performed on all women before injection and again at 4, 12, and 26 weeks. The BoNT-A injection was performed under 4DUS guidance. Results Twenty-nine women had 44 injections over the course of the study. Although improvements were seen in VAS scores for dysmenorrhea, nonmenstrual pelvic pain, and dyspareunia, there were no significant differences in ultrasound biometry at either rest, Valsalva, or on contraction when comparing postinjection measurements at 4, 12, and 26 weeks with pre-injection baseline. Similarly, vaginal pressure readings at rest demonstrated a significant improvement throughout the 4, 12, and 26 week follow-up, with a reduction in maximal contraction at 4 and 12 but not 26 weeks. Conclusions This study demonstrates that 4DUS biometry of the pelvic floor does not correlate with clinical pain and vaginal pressure outcomes for BoNT-A injection in the context of PFTM.

PURPOSE To compare the accuracy of the Barrett Universal II (BUII) five-variable formula to previous generation formulae in calculating intraocular lens (IOL) power following paediatric cataract extraction. METHODS Retrospective study of consecutive paediatric patients who underwent uneventful cataract extraction surgery along with in-the-bag IOL implantation between 2012 and 2018 in the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The accuracy of five different IOL formulae, including the BUII, Sanders-Retzlaff-Kraff Theoretical (SRK/T), Holladay I, Hoffer Q and Haigis, was evaluated. Constant optimization was performed for each IOL and for each formula separately. Mean prediction error (PE) and the mean and median absolute PE (APE) were calculated for the five different IOL formulae investigated. RESULTS Sixty-six eyes of 66 children (59% males) with a median age at surgery of 6.2 years (IQR, 3.2-9.2 years) were included in the study. The mean IOL power that was implanted was 23.3 ± 5.1 D (range; 12.0-39.0 D). Overall, the BUII had a comparable median APE to the Hoffer Q, Holladay I, SRK/T and Haigis formulae (BUII: 0.49D versus 0.48D, 0.61D, 0.74D and 0.58D respectively; p = 0.205). The BUII, together with Hoffer Q, produced better predictability within 0.5D from target refraction compared with the SRK/T formula (BUII:51.5%, Hoffer Q:51.5% versus SRK/T:31.8%, p = 0.002 for both). CONCLUSION The BUII formula had comparable accuracy to other tested formulae and outperformed the SRK/T formula, when calculating IOL power within the 0.5D range from target refraction in paediatric eyes undergoing cataract surgery with in-the-bag IOL implantation.

OBJECTIVE To investigate prenatal changes in cardiac biometric and flow parameters in fetuses with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) diagnosed neonatally compared with controls with normal cardiac anatomy. METHODS This analysis was conducted as part of the Copenhagen Baby Heart Study, a multicenter cohort study of 25 556 neonates that underwent second-trimester anomaly scan at 18 + 0 to 22 + 6 weeks' gestation and neonatal echocardiography within 4 weeks after birth, in Copenhagen University Hospital Herlev, Hvidovre Hospital and Rigshospitalet in greater Copenhagen, between April 2016 and October 2018. From February 2017 (Rigshospitalet) and September 2017 (Herlev and Hvidovre hospitals), the protocol for second-trimester screening of the heart was extended to include evaluation of the four-chamber view, with assessment of flow across the atrioventricular valves, sagittal view of the aortic arch and midumbilical artery and ductus venosus pulsatility indices. All images were evaluated by two investigators, and cardiac biometric and flow parameters were measured and compared between cases with BAV and controls. All cases with neonatal BAV were assessed by a specialist. Maternal characteristics and first- and second-trimester biomarkers were also compared between the two groups. RESULTS Fifty-five infants with BAV and 8316 controls with normal cardiac anatomy were identified during the study period and assessed using the extended prenatal cardiac imaging protocol. There were three times as many mothers who smoked before pregnancy in the group with BAV as in the control group (9.1% vs 2.7%; P = 0.003). All other baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. Fetuses with BAV, compared with controls, had a significantly larger diameter of the aorta at the level of the aortic valve (3.1 mm vs 3.0 mm (mean difference, 0.12 mm (95% CI, 0.03-0.21 mm))) and the pulmonary artery at the level of the pulmonary valve (4.1 mm vs 3.9 mm (mean difference, 0.15 mm (95% CI, 0.03-0.28 mm))). Following conversion of the diameter measurements of the aorta and pulmonary artery to Z-scores and Bonferroni correction, the differences between the two groups were no longer statistically significant. Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) multiples of the median (MoM) was significantly lower in the BAV group than in the control group (0.85 vs 1.03; P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that fetuses with BAV may have a larger aortic diameter at the level of the aortic valve, measured in the left-ventricular-outflow-tract view, and a larger pulmonary artery diameter at the level of the pulmonary valve, measured in the three-vessel view, at 20 weeks' gestation. Moreover, we found an association of maternal smoking and low PAPP-A MoM with BAV. © 2021 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The study is to evaluate the performance of ocular biometric measures and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) for detecting myopia among Chinese students. Among 5- to 18-year-old Chinese students from two cities of China, trained eye-care professionals performed assessment of ocular biometrics (axial length (AL), corneal curvature radius (CR), anterior chamber depth) under noncycloplegic conditions using NIDEK Optical Biometer AL-Scan, distance visual acuity using retro-illuminated logMAR chart with tumbling-E optotypes, and cycloplegic refractive error using NIDEK autorefractor with administration of 0.5% tropicamide. Spherical equivalent (SER) in diopters (D) was calculated as sphere plus half cylinder, and myopia was defined as SER ≤ − 0.5 D. Performances of ocular biometrics and UCVA (individually and in combination) for detecting myopia were evaluated using sensitivity and specificity, predictive values, and area under ROC curve (AUC) in both development dataset and validation dataset. Among 3436 students (mean age 9.7 years, 51% female), the mean (SD) cycloplegic SER was − 0.20 (2.18) D, and 1269 (36.9%) had myopia. Cycloplegic SER was significantly correlated with AL (Pearson Correlation coefficient r = − 0.82), AL/CR ratio (r = − 0.90), and UCVA (r = 0.79), but was not correlated with CR (r = 0.02, p = 0.15). The AL/CR ratio detected myopia with AUC 0.963 (95% CI 0.957–0.969) and combination with UCVA improved the AUC to 0.976 (95% CI 0.971–0.981). Using age-specific AL/CR cutoff (> 3.00 for age 3.06 for 10–14 years, > 3.08 for ≥ 15 years) as myopia positive, the sensitivity and specificity were 87.0% (95% CI 84.4–89.6%) and 87.8% (86.0–89.6%), respectively, in the development dataset and 86.4% (95% CI 83.7–89.1%) and 89.4% (95% CI 87.3–91.4%), respectively, in the validation dataset. Purpose Cross-sectional studies have variably reported that poor sleep quality may be associated with myopia in children. Longitudinal data, collected over the ages when myopia develops and progresses, could provide new insights into the sleep-myopia paradigm. This study tested the hypothesis that 12-year trajectories of sleep behaviour from childhood to adolescence is associated with myopia during young adulthood. Methods At the 5-, 8-, 10-, 14- and 17-year follow-ups of the longitudinal Raine Study, which has been following a cohort since their birth in 1989-1992, participants' parents/guardians completed the Child Behaviour Checklist questionnaire (CBCL), which collected information on their child's sleep behaviour and quality. The CBCL includes six questions measuring sleep behaviour, which parents rated as 0 = not true, 1 = somewhat/sometimes true, or 2 = very/often true. Scores were summed at each follow-up to form a composite "sleep behaviour score". Latent Class Growth Analysis (LCGA) was used to classify participants according to their 12-year trajectory of sleep behaviour. At the 20-year follow-up, an eye examination was performed which included cycloplegic autorefraction and axial length measurement. Results The LCGA identified three clusters of participants based on their trajectory of sleep behaviour: those with minimal' (43.6% of the total Raine Study sample), 'declining' (48.9%), or 'persistent' (7.5%) sleep problems. A total of 1194 participants had ophthalmic data and longitudinal sleep data available for analysis (47.2% female, 85.6% Caucasian). No significant differences were observed in regards to age, sex, ethnicity or ocular parameters between trajectory groups. Unadjusted and fully adjusted analyses demonstrated that sleep problem behaviour was not significantly associated with changes in refractive error, axial length or corneal radius. Conclusions Our findings do not support the hypothesis that there is an association between sleep behaviour and myopia. Future longitudinal studies should explore sleep trajectory data pre- and post-myopia diagnosis to confirm our results.

Purpose: To examine the refractive lens power (RLP) and lens thickness and their associated factors in children from North-Western China.Methods: Children from two schools (primary school and junior high school) in the North-Western Chinese province of Qinghai underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including biometry and cycloplegic refractometry. The RLP was calculated using Bennett’s equation. Results: The study included 596 (77.9%) individuals (mean age: 11.0±2.8 years; range: 6-16 years) with a mean axial length of 23.65±1.24mm (range: 20.02-27.96mm). Mean lens thickness was 3.30±0.16mm (range: 2.85-3.99mm) and mean RLP was 24.85±1.98D (range: 19.40-32.97). In univariate analysis, girls as compared to boys had a significantly thicker lens and greater RLP, shorter axial length, smaller corneal curvature radius and shorter corneal curvature radius (all PP=0.11) and corneal thickness (P=0.16). RLP was positively associated with refractive error (correlation coefficient r=0.33; PPPPβ=−0.07), female sex (Pβ=−0.08), shorter axial length (Pβ=−0.48) and higher lens thickness (Pβ=0.42). Conclusions: In Chinese children, RLP with a mean of 24.85±1.98D decreases with older age, male sex, longer axial length, and thinner lens thickness. Changes in RLP and axial length elongation are important players in the emmetropization and myopization.

To assess the longitudinal change in components of astigmatism from age 4 to 7 years and its association with axial length-corneal radius ratio (AL/CR). Children born between September 2011 and August 2012 in Yuhuatai District of Nanjing were invited to participate in the Nanjing Eye Study for a comprehensive eye examination annually since 2015. The data presented in this paper were obtained in 2016, 2017, and 2019. At each study encounter, noncycloplegic autorefraction and ocular biometric parameters were measured. Changes of total astigmatism (TA), corneal astigmatism (CA), anterior corneal astigmatism (ACA), residual astigmatism (RA), and internal astigmatism (IA) were analyzed in clinical notation (Cyl) and vector notation (J0, J45). Nine hundred fifty-four children (mean ± standard deviation of baseline age: 4.63 ± 0.29 years, 53.7% boys) had complete data and were included in this study. Mean slopes of longitudinal changes in Cyl notation were significantly negative for TA, CA, and ACA, but positive for IA. TA, CA, ACA, and RA of J0 notation had a shift toward increasing with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism and/or decreasing against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism. TA of J45 notation showed an increase in astigmatism at axis 135° and/or a decrease in astigmatism at axis 45°, while CA and ACA of J45 notation showed an opposite change. Longitudinal changes in ACA and IA were negatively correlated in J0 notation, but not in J45 notation. Based on compensation factor (CF, defined as the minus ratio of IA and ACA), the compensation proportions for J0 in varying degrees (CF: 0.1–2) in 2016, 2017, and 2019 were 91.3%, 93.5%, and 90.0%, respectively, while these for J45 were 74.9%, 76.5%, and 34.6%, respectively. Higher AL/CR increase was associated with less decrease or more increase in CA and ACA of Cyl notation, and a shift toward increasing WTR and/or decreasing ATR in these of J0 notation. The compensatory role of IA was persistent and prominent from 4 to 7 years old for J0 notation in Chinese young children. The progression of AL/CR was correlated with astigmatism originated from the cornea.

Background Evaluation of the external genitalia is an important part of prenatal ultrasound. However, there is no standardized methodology that includes biometric measurements and normative data to be able to carry out this evaluation. Objective To develop a standardized methodology for fetal genital biometry and obtain reference values for use in mid-trimester ultrasound. Study design A prospective cross-sectional study was used. 273 male and 253 female fetuses of normal, singleton pregnancies at 18 to 22 weeks were included. Measurements of fetal penis length, penile width and transverse scrotal diameter in male fetuses and bilabial diameter in female fetuses were performed by transabdominal ultrasound. Reference values were calculated for each gestational week. Results Realization of the open-legs axial plane is described as a working methodology. Normative data for penile length, penile width, transverse scrotal diameter and bilabial diameter are defined, including mean, minimum and maximum values, range, and 5th, 10th, 90th and 95th percentiles. Conclusions We have provided a standardized methodology using the open-legs axial plane, which would integrate the main measurements. In addition with the normative data constructed from their use, we hope to be able to improve the external genitalia assessment and diagnosis of genital anomalies in mid-trimester ultrasound.

Purpose To assess the additive value of foveal swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT)–based biometry to the preoperative fundus examinations for diagnosing macular abnormalities in patients scheduled for cataract surgery. Design Diagnostic testing evaluation. Methods Consecutive patients 50 years of age and older planned for cataract surgery from one institution were retrospectively enrolled. All patients underwent foveal swept-source OCT, and macular spectral domain (SD) OCT scans before pupil dilation as well as dilated fundus biomicroscopy examination. The effectiveness of fundus biomicroscopy examinations, foveal swept-source OCT scans, and the combination of both in identifying macular diseases was analyzed with macular spectral-domain OCT scans as reference. Results Seventy-eight of the eligible 442 eyes (442 patients) were excluded because of noninterpretable macular spectral-domain OCT OCT scans or foveal swept-source OCT scans. The remaining 364 eyes of 364 patients (mean age 73.59±9.26 years [range 49-96], 172 males) formed the study group. Fundus biomicroscopy alone vs fundus biomicroscopy with the addition of foveal swept-source OCT yielded 36% vs 63% sensitivity, 94% vs 72% specificity, 79% vs 58% positive predictive value (PPV), and 71% vs 76% negative predictive value (NPV), respectively. This diagnostic improvement was significant compared with fundus biomicroscopy alone (P = 2.98–8). Conclusion Combined fundus biomicroscopy and foveal swept-source OCT scans improved the detection of macular abnormalities prior to cataract surgery but it was inferior to macular spectral-domain OCT scans. Additional studies to assess the cost-effectiveness of adding foveal swept-source OCT scan in comparison to macular spectral-domain OCT scan to the preoperative cataract evaluation are required.

To compare the accuracy of SRK/T, Barrett Universal II and Hill radial basis activation function-2 formulas in intraocular lens power calculation using different axial lengths.The retrospective study was conducted at the Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan, and comprised data from June to December 2020 of patients who underwent phacoemulsification with non-toric, monofocal intraocular lens implantation. Data was sorted in 3 groups on the basis of axial length; group 1 22-25mm, group 225mm, and group 322mm. Intraocular lens power was calculated using SRK/T with IOL Master, while online calculators were used for Barrett Universal II and Hill radial basis activation function-2 formulas. Data was analysed using SPSS 21.Of the 100 patients, 47(347%) were males and 53(53%) were females. There were 49(49%) diabetics, and 57(57%) were right eyes. There were 77(77%) patients with mean age 62.38±9.5 in group 1, 17(17%) patients with mean age 52.59±12.78 in group 2, and 6(6%) patients with mean age 61.33+7.61 years in group 3. Mean axial length in group 1 was 23.55±0.81mm with anterior chamber depth of 3.1± 0.37mm. In group 2, mean axial length was 27.54±2.8mm, with anterior chamber depth of 3.4±0.15mm. In group 3, mean axial length was 21.74mm, with anterior chamber depth of 3.14±0.44mm. Mean prediction error of SRK/T versus Barrett Universal II was 0.092±0.041D (p=0.078), SRK/T versus Hill radial basis activation function-2 was 0.066±0.037D (p=0.221) and Barrett Universal versus Hill radial basis activation function-2 was -0.025±0.019D (p=0.553). Mean prediction error of group 1 versus group 2 was -0.105±0.14D, group 2 versus group 3 was 0.046±0.216D and group 2 versus group 3 was 0.151±0.243D (p=1.0). In 74% eyes, absolute prediction error was within ±0.5D in group 1, 64% in group 2 and 50% in group 3 for all formulas.SRK/T formula was found to be as reliable as Barrett Universal II and Hill radial basis activation function-2 in terms of calculating intra ocular lens power for all axial lengths.

The effects of cycloplegia on ocular biological parameters in children have been extensively studied, but few studies have compared these parameters between different refractive states, ages, and sexes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in ocular biometry before and after cycloplegia in different groups based on dioptre, age and sex. We examined a total of 2049 participants in this cross-sectional study. A comprehensive eye examination was conducted before cycloplegia. Cycloplegia was implemented with the application of atropine or tropicamide. Ocular biological parameters were evaluated after cycloplegia, including axial length (AL), mean keratometry (K), flat keratometry (K1), steep keratometry (K2), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and white-to-white (WTW) distance. All the participants were categorized based on dioptre, age and sex. Statistical analysis was performed with paired t tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Regarding dioptre, AL was found to be increased significantly in the Fs, Ast and FA (p p p p p > 0.05). BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dandy-Walker malformation, vermian hypoplasia, and Blake pouch remnant represent a continuum of anomalies and are common reasons for referral for fetal MR imaging. This study aimed to determine biometric measurements that quantitatively delineate these 3 posterior fossa phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our single-center institutional review board approved a retrospective analysis of all fetal MRIs for posterior fossa malformations, including Dandy-Walker malformation, vermian hypoplasia, and Blake pouch remnant. Measurements included the anterior-to-posterior pons, craniocaudal and anterior-to-posterior vermis, lateral ventricle size, and tegmentovermian and posterior fossa angles. Measurements were compared with normal biometry and also between each subgroup. RESULTS: Thirty-three fetuses met the criteria and were included in the study. Seven were designated as having Dandy-Walker malformation; 16, vermian hypoplasia; and 10, Blake pouch remnant. No significant group interactions with adjusted mean gestational age for tegmentovermian and posterior fossa angles were observed. The tegmentovermian angle was significantly higher in Dandy-Walker malformation (109.5° [SD, 20.2°]) compared with vermian hypoplasia (52.13° [SD, 18.8°]) and Blake pouch remnant (32.1° [SD, 17.9°]), regardless of gestational age. Lateral ventricle sizes were significantly higher in Dandy-Walker malformation at a mean of ≥23.1 weeks’ gestational age compared with vermian hypoplasia and Blake pouch remnant. The anterior-to-posterior and craniocaudal vermes were significantly smaller in Dandy-Walker malformation compared with vermian hypoplasia and Blake pouch remnant at mean of ≥23.1 weeks’ gestational age. CONCLUSIONS: Dandy-Walker malformation can be described in relation to vermian hypoplasia and Blake pouch remnant by an increased tegmentovermian angle; however, other potential qualifying biometric measurements are more helpful at ≥23.1 weeks’ gestational age. Because they fall along the same spectrum of abnormalities, the difficulty in distinguishing these entities from one another makes precise morphologic and biometric descriptions important.

Previous studies regarding the zinc status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) yielded inconsistent results. Thus, the present meta-analysis was aimed to estimate the association between hair and serum/plasma zinc levels and ADHD. Online databases of Medline, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched up to October 2020 with no limitation in time and language. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) of hair and serum/plasma zinc levels were calculated using a random-effects model. Overall, 22 articles with 1280 subjects with ADHD and 1200 controls were included. The pooled effect size indicated that serum/plasma zinc levels in subjects with ADHD were not statistically different than their controls (WMD = − 1.26 µmol/L; 95% CI − 3.72, 1.20). Interestingly, the exclusion of one study from the analysis showed that people with ADHD significantly have lower circulating levels of zinc compared to their controls (WMD: − 2.49 µmol/L; 95% CI − 4.29, − 0.69). Also, the pooled effect size indicated that hair zinc levels in cases with ADHD were not statistically different than their controls (WMD = − 24.19 μg/g; 95% CI − 61.80, 13.42). Present meta-analysis raises the possibility that subjects with ADHD are prone to have declined levels of zinc levels. Based on current findings, screening the zinc levels in subjects with ADHD could be reasonable. Further well-designed studies are needed to clarify the role of zinc in the etiology of ADHD.

Purpose: To evaluate the prediction error (PE) after applying the Abulafia–Koch formula in an online calculator with and without consideration of anterior corneal surgically induced astigmatism (SIACornea). Methods: SIACornea models were calculated with a historical database of 204 right eyes (REs) from a single surgeon, either for manual (2.2 mm) or femtosecond (2.5 mm) temporal clear corneal incisions. PE was assessed in 58 REs operated by the same surgeon with a monofocal toric IOL and calculated, considering the PCA estimation in an online calculator with the combination of each one of the following SIACornea calculation approaches: (A) considering only significant centroids after stratification, (B) all centroids after stratification and (C) a single centroid without stratification. Results: The consideration of all centroids resulted in an underestimation of SIACornea in cases of preoperative against-the-rule astigmatism (ATR-A) and an overestimation in with-the-rule astigmatism (WTR-A). After stratification, SIACornea was only significant in preoperative ATR and oblique astigmatism cases for femtosecond incisions. PE considering PCA only was 0.03@160º. The combination with SIACornea resulted in a WTR-A surprise in preoperative ATR-A and WTR-A, however only being significant for preoperative ATR-A in calculation approaches B (0.29@84º) and C (0.21@80º). SIACornea addition to PCA estimation only reduced the centroid for oblique preoperative astigmatism. Conclusions: Surgeons should consider the calculation of the SIACornea after stratification by astigmatism type when using the same incision location (i.e. temporal). However, SIACornea derived from the anterior corneal surface should not be combined with PCA estimation for IOL power calculations.

PRECIS Angle closure disease was present in 59.3% of eyes with long anterior zonules. The cause is multifactorial including a thick anteriorly positioned crystalline lens, shorter axial length and increased lens thickness to axial length factor. PURPOSE To study the profile of eyes with long anterior zonules (LAZ) presenting in a glaucoma clinic in a tertiary eye care centre and understand the pathogenesis of angle closure disease in these eyes. METHODS Retrospective cross sectional study.All patients with LAZ seen from January 2014-December 2018 were included. Demographic and clinical characteristics were noted. LAZ eyes (177 eyes of 177 patients) were compared with an equal number of age and gender matched controls. LAZ was defined as radially oriented zonular fibres (both pigmented and non pigmented), extending central to the normal zonular termination zone on the anterior lens surface more than 1▒mm beyond their usual insertion of 1.42±0.24▒mm from the lens equator onto the mid peripheral zone or central to it, as seen on slit lamp examination, following pupillary dilation by a single examiner. Glaucoma was defined according to the International Society for Geographical and Epidemiological Ophthalmology classification. The following biometric parameters were compared: anterior chamber depth (ACD), axial length (AXL), lens thickness (LT), lens position (LP=ACD+0.5*LT), relative lens position (RLP=LP/AXL); lens thickness to axial length factor (LAF=(LT/AXL)×10). LAZ eyes without angle closure disease were also compared with controls. RESULTS Mean age of patients with LAZ was 64.8±8.1 years. Of these, 63.3% were females. Angle closure disease was present in 59.3% (105 of 177) patients. Majority of these eyes were primary angle closure suspects (53.3%, n=56). This study evaluated the accuracy of total keratometry (TK) and standard keratometry (K) for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation in eyes treated with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. The retrospective study included a retrospective analysis of data from 62 patients (91 eyes) who underwent uneventful femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery with Artis PL E (Cristalens Industrie, Lannion, France) IOL implantation by a single surgeon between May 2020 and December 2020 in Severance Hospital, Seoul, South Korea. The new IOLMaster 700 biometry device (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) was used to calculate TK and K. The mean absolute error (MAE), median absolute error (MedAE), and the percentages of eyes within prediction errors of ± 0.25 D, ± 0.50 D, and ± 1.00 D were calculated for all IOL formulas (SRK/T, Hoffer-Q, Haigis, Holladay 1, Holladay 2, and Barrett Universal II). There was strong agreement between K and TK (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.99), with a mean difference of 0.04 D. For all formulas, MAE tended to be lower for TK than for K, and relatively lower MAE and MedAE values were observed for SRK/T and Holladay 1. Furthermore, for all formulas, a greater proportion of eyes fell within ± 0.25 D of the predicted postoperative spherical equivalent range in the TK group than in the K group. However, differences in MAEs, MedAEs, and percentages of eyes within the above prediction errors were not statistically significant. In conclusion, TK and K exhibit comparable performance for refractive prediction in eyes undergoing femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.

OBJECTIVES To determine whether decreased fetal growth velocity precedes antepartum fetal death and to evaluate whether fetal growth velocity is a better predictor of antepartum fetal death compared to a single fetal biometric measurement at the last available ultrasound scan prior to diagnosis of demise. METHODS This was a retrospective, longitudinal study of 4285 singleton pregnancies in African-American women who underwent at least two fetal ultrasound examinations between 14 and 32 weeks of gestation and delivered a liveborn neonate (controls; n = 4262) or experienced antepartum fetal death (cases; n = 23). Fetal death was defined as death diagnosed at ≥ 20 weeks of gestation and confirmed by ultrasound examination. Exclusion criteria included congenital anomaly, birth at
