The present study aimed to examine and compare the effects of a rehabilitation exercise (RE) using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and blood flow restriction (BFR) on muscle function and knee functional abilities in patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). A total of 45 patients who underwent ACLR (28.76 ± 0.8 years; 34 males and 11 females) were retrospectively divided into three groups: control (CON, n = 15), NMES (n = 15), and BFR (n = 15). All participants carried out the RE program for 60 min, thrice a week for 12 weeks. The Lysholm score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, thigh circumference at 5 cm from the knee joint, Y-balance posterior medial, and lateral significantly increased in all groups via intervention (p < 0.05). However, NMES showed a higher thigh circumference at 15 cm from the knee joint than CON via intervention (p < 0.05), and the strength and endurance of quadriceps femoris and hamstrings and Y-balance anterior showed a significant increase via intervention in NMES and BFR compared with CON (p < 0.05). In conclusion, we confirmed that RE using NMES and BFR effectively enhances muscle function and balance in ACLR patients.

The purpose of the study was to examine the development of a multiple linear regression model to estimate heart rate variability (HRV) parameters using easy-to-measure independent variables in preliminary experiments. HRV parameters (time domain: SDNN, RMSSD, NN50, pNN50; frequency domain: TP, VLF, LF, HF) and the independent variables (e.g., sex, age, body height, body weight, BMI, HR, HRmax, HRR) were measured in 75 healthy adults (male n = 27, female n = 48) for estimating HRV. The HRV estimation multiple linear regression model was developed using the backward elimination technique. The regression model’s coefficient of determination for the time domain variables was significantly high (SDNN = R2: 72.2%, adjusted R2: 69.8%, P < .001; RMSSD = R2: 93.1%, adjusted R2: 92.1%, P < .001; NN50 = R2: 78.0%, adjusted R2: 74.9%, P < .001; pNN50 = R2: 89.1%, adjusted R2: 87.4%, P < .001). The coefficient of determination of the regression model for the frequency domain variable was moderate (TP = R2: 75.6%, adjusted R2: 72.6%, P < .001; VLF = R2: 41.6%, adjusted R2: 40.3%, P < .001; LF = R2: 54.6%, adjusted R2: 49.2%, P < .001; HF = R2: 67.5%, adjusted R2: 63.4%, P < .001). The coefficient of determination of time domain variables in the developed multiple regression models was shown to be very high (adjusted R2: 69.8%–92.1%, P < .001), but the coefficient of determination of frequency domain variables was moderate (adjusted R2: 40.3%–72.6%, P < .001). In addition to the equipment used for measuring HRV in clinical trials, this study confirmed that simple physiological variables could predict HRV.

Sarcopenia is defined as an age-related decrease in muscle mass, strength, and function. We investigated the effect of circuit training on body composition, balance, muscle mass and strength, and pulmonary function in Korean women with sarcopenia. We randomly assigned 26 Korean women with sarcopenia ( Mage = 74.9, SD = 4.5 years) to either an exercise group (EG) ( n = 13) or a control group (CG) ( n = 13). The EG performed 25-75 minutes of circuit exercise training (gradually increasing time periods) three times per week over 12 weeks, while the CG maintained their usual daily lifestyle during the intervention period. We measured body weight, body mass index, percent body fat, free fat mass, balance ability, peak torque in shoulder, knee, and lumbar joints normalized for bodyweight (BW), forced vital capacity, percentage of forced expiratory volume in one second, and forced expiratory flow 25–75% before and after the intervention. The EG showed improved body composition (i.e., body mass index, fat-free body mass, fat mass; all p 2 > 0.180), balance (i.e., right and left of static and dynamic balance and fast 10-m walk; all p 2 > 0.151), muscular function (i.e., 90°/s and 180°/s peak power per kilogram BW, 90°/s average power per kilogram BW, 180°/s total work, and 180°/s endurance ratio; all p 2 > 0.157), and pulmonary function (all p 2 > 0.292). On the other hand, the CG showed no significant changes. Circuit exercise training improves muscle mass and strength, body composition, balance, and pulmonary function in women with sarcopenia.

Resistance exercise effectively improves bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle quality (e.g., muscle mass and muscle strength). The present study aimed to examine the effect of a 24-week resistance exercise training (RT) program on body composition, BMD, functional fitness, and isokinetic muscle strength in obese older women. Forty obese older women were initially enrolled. Among them, 30 participants (age: 80.55 ± 4.94 years; body fat percentage: 36.25 ± 3.44%) completed the study. The participants were randomly assigned into two groups: the RT group (n = 15) and the control (CON) group (n = 15). The RT group participated in the exercise for 60 min per session and two sessions per week for 24 weeks. Pre-test and post-test body composition, BMD, functional fitness, and isokinetic muscle strength were evaluated. The RT group increased significantly in functional fitness (hand grip strength: 1.70 kg, p < 0.01, and lower body strength: 3.87 n, p < 0.001), and isokinetic muscle strength (non-dominant leg extensor peak torque %BW at 60°/s: 13.20%, p < 0.05, dominant leg (DL) flexor peak torque at 60°/s: 3.87 Nm, p < 0.05, and DL flexor peak torque %BW at 60°/s: 7.60%, p < 0.05). However, the CON group showed negative changes in body composition (fat mass: 1.15 kg, p < 0.001, body fat percentage: 1.59%, p < 0.001, and fat-free mass: −0.58 kg, p < 0.05), BMD (whole-body: −0.01 g/cm2, p < 0.001 and forearm: −0.01 g/cm2, p < 0.05), functional fitness (lower body flexibility: −3.23 cm, p < 0.01, upper body strength: −2.06 n, p < 0.01, and agility and dynamic balance: 0.54 s, p < 0.01), and isokinetic muscle strength at 60°/s and 180°/s (all peak torque % body weight variables: −7.31–−1.50, p < 0.05). Our findings show that the CON group negatively affects body composition, BMD, functional fitness, and isokinetic muscle strength in obese older women for 24 weeks.

Purpose To review our experiences of descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) secondary to deep neck infection (DNI) and determine appropriate airway management for decreasing mortality and morbidity of patients with DNM. Methods Medical records of 20 patients (8 women and 12 men) who had been managed for DNM secondary to DNI between March 2006 and December 2019 were analyzed. Diagnosis and extent of infection were confirmed by computed tomography of the neck and chest. The upper airway was closely monitored with a fiberoptic laryngoscope. Complications were evaluated according to various types of airway management in our serial cases. Results Five (25%) out of 20 patients died as a result of septic shock and multiorgan failure. None of these patients died of accidental airway obstruction or airway management mishaps. Keeping short-term orotracheal intubation was safe and adequate after the initial surgery. Early tracheotomy was performed for 4 patients and it was significantly associated with mortality (P = .032). Three patients who underwent late tracheotomy had no mortality. Patients with tracheotomy had longer duration of overall hospital stay than those without tracheotomy. Conclusions Well-controlled airway management might decrease mortality, hospitalization, and airway complications in patients with DNM secondary to DNI. Keeping orotracheal intubation rather than upfront tracheotomy should be first considered when managing airway along with examination of the upper airway with a fiberoptic laryngoscope.

This study aimed to compare the effects of an acute Pilates program under hypoxic vs. normoxic conditions on the metabolic, cardiac, and vascular functions of the participants. Ten healthy female Pilates experts completed a 50-min tubing Pilates program under normoxic conditions (N trial) and under 3000 m (inspired oxygen fraction = 14.5%) hypobaric hypoxia conditions (H trial) after a 30-min exposure in the respective environments on different days. Blood pressure, branchial ankle pulse wave velocity, and flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in the branchial artery were measured before and after the exercise. Metabolic parameters and cardiac function were assessed every minute during the exercise. Both trials showed a significant increase in FMD, however, the increase in FMD was significantly higher after the H trial than that after the N trial. Furthermore, FMD before exercise was significantly higher in the H trial than in the N trial. In terms of metabolic parameters, minute ventilation, carbon dioxide excretion, respiratory exchange ratio, and carbohydrate oxidation were significantly higher but fat oxidation was lower during the H trial than during the N trial. In terms of cardiac function, heart rate was significantly increased during the H trial than during the N trial. Our results suggested that, compared to that under normoxic conditions, Pilates exercise under hypoxic conditions led to greater metabolic and cardiac responses and also elicited an additive effect on vascular endothelial function.

This study aimed to analyze the differences in energy intake and physical activity (PA) levels according to sex and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among elderly people in Korea. Data of 3720 elderly people (aged &gt, 65 years) were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016&ndash, 2018). We analyzed PA levels (occupational and recreational PA) and energy intakes (carbohydrate, protein, and fat). The MetS group showed lower levels of moderate intensity recreational PA and place movement than the non-MetS group (p &lt, 0.05), in the MetS group, PA levels were significantly lower in women than in men (p &lt, 0.05). The intakes of total energy, carbohydrate, fat, and protein were lower in the MetS group than in the non-MetS group (p &lt, 0.001). Both the non-MetS and MetS groups showed lower energy intakes in women than men (p &lt, 0.001). Our study shows that elderly people, especially women, with MetS have significantly lower total PA levels and total energy intakes. We confirmed the importance of increased PA and proper nutritional intake in elderly people. Therefore, it is believed that practical measures such as nutrition education and nutrition guidance and PA education are urgently needed to reduce the incidence of MetS among the elderly.

AIM The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of exercise intervention in hypoxia as a novel treatment method for obesity in older men. METHODS A total of 24 obese 65-70-year-old Korean men (66.5 ± 0.8 years) were randomly assigned to undergo hypoxic training (n = 12) or normoxic training (n = 12), and all participants carried out an exercise intervention composed of aerobic exercise on a treadmill (30 min) and bicycle (30 min), and resistance exercise (30-40 min) in normoxia, and 3000-m normobaric hypoxia separately for a total of 12 weeks, three times a week. Health-related dependent variables (body composition, physical fitness, pulmonary function and heart rate variability) were evaluated at pre- and post-exercise intervention. RESULTS Hypoxic training showed more improved body composition (bodyweight -5.68 vs -3.16 kg, %body fat -5.50 vs -1.97%, fat-free mass 2.09 vs 1.06 kg), physical fitness (chair sit-to-stand 5.67 vs 4.58, pegboard 3.58 vs 2.17, tandem test -1.74 vs -1.31 s, one leg standing 6.27 vs 3.71 s), pulmonary function (forced vital capacity 0.15 vs 0.02 L, forced expiratory volume in 1 s 0.23 vs 0.01 L, percent of forced expiratory volume in 1 s 0.87 vs 0.08, maximal voluntary ventilation 5.26 vs 2.22 L) and heart rate variability (high frequency 0.94 vs 0.19 ms2 , low frequency/high frequency -0.28 vs -0.08, salivary cortisol -0.13 vs -0.04 μg/dL) than normoxic training. CONCLUSIONS Compared with normoxic training, hypoxic training is a novel and successful health promotion method in obese older populations. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2019; 19: 311-316.

Although sub-regional analysis methods of the corpus callosum (CC) have been developed, there has been no in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study on a sub-regional volume analysis of the CC of late-onset depression (LOD). The aim of this study was to investigate the CC volume differences between LOD subjects and healthy elderly controls using a sub-regional analysis technique. Forty subjects with LOD and thirty nine group-matched healthy control subjects underwent 3T MRI scanning, and sub-regional volumes of the CC were measured and compared between the groups. The volumes of total (F=5.8, p=0.001), the anterior (F=5.2, p=0.001) and the posterior CC (F=5.1, p=0.001) were significantly reduced in the LOD group as compared to the control group. We measured cognitive functions in several different domains (language functions, verbal learning, visuospatial functions, delayed recall, memory consolidation, recognition memory, and executive functions) through the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease. The anterior CC volume in the LOD group showed significant positive correlation with the Verbal Fluency scores. The posterior CC volume in the LOD group was positively correlated significantly with the Word List Memory, the Word List Recall and the Constructional Praxis scores. This study is the first to elaborate the sub-regional volume differences of the CC between controls and LOD patients. These structural changes in the CC might be at the core of the underlying neurobiological mechanisms in LOD.

Previous studies have shown aberrant functional connectivity in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the effects of beta-amyloid (Aβ) retention on regional functional synchronization in cognitively normal older adults still remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the distinctive association pattern between Aβ retention and regional functional synchronization in cognitively normal older adults. Sixty-one older adults with normal cognition underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging and regional functional synchronizations were quantified using regional homogeneity (ReHo). Subjects were dichotomized using 18F-Florbetaben positron emission tomography imaging into subjects with (Aβ+; n = 30) and without (Aβ-; n = 31) Aβ burden. The Aβ+ group exhibited significantly higher ReHo in the fusiform gyrus and lower ReHo in the precuneus compared with the Aβ- group. We found significant negative correlations between global Aβ retention and ReHo in the precuneus and medial prefrontal cortex and positive correlations between global Aβ retention and ReHo in the bilateral lingual gyrus, left fusiform gyrus, and right middle temporal gyrus in the Aβ+ group. Our findings suggest that regional functional synchronization might have distinctive association patterns with Aβ retention in the cognitively normal older adults. These findings can enrich the functional characterization of early stages of disease progression in AD.

Background Although there is substantial evidence of associations between frontal-striatal circuits and cerebral vascular burden in late-onset depression (LOD), relationships between vascular burden and hippocampal subfields are not clear. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between cerebral vascular burden and hippocampal subfield volume in LOD patients. Methods Fifty subjects with LOD and 50 group-matched healthy control subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning. Hippocampal subfields volumes were measured and compared between the groups. In addition, association patterns between white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volumes, clinical measures and hippocampal subfield volumes were investigated in the LOD group. Results Subjects with LOD exhibited significant hippocampal volume reductions in the total hippocampus, cornu ammonis (CA) 1 and 3 and dentate gyrus (DG) areas compared with healthy subjects. Total WMH volume was negatively correlated with left total hippocampal volume and CA1 in the LOD group. In addition, depression severity was negatively associated with left and right CA3 volumes in the LOD group. Limitation Our findings of distinctive relationships between WMH and hippocampal subfields demonstrate a simple correlation, but do not prove causation Conclusion This study is the first to elaborate distinctive association patterns between hippocampal subfield volumes and cerebral vascular burden in LOD. These structural changes in the hippocampal CA1, CA3 and DG areas might be at the core of the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of hippocampal dysfunction in LOD. However, longitudinal studies will be needed to identify the mechanisms of these structural changes.

The aim of this study was to examine and compare two automated quantitative software tools (PMOD and MIMneuro) for the quantification of amyloid positron emission tomography (PET). A total of 30 subjects—15 Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and 15 cognitively normal age- and sex-matched controls—were enrolled. All subjects underwent structural volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and amyloid PET scans with F-18 florbetaben. Regional standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) using the cerebellar cortex as a reference region were obtained using PMOD and MIMneuro. The SUVRs using both PMOD and MIMneuro showed high discriminatory power between the AD patients and cognitively normal controls. While PMOD and MIMneuro yielded significantly different SUVRs in some brain regions, the two methods had good overall agreement. MIMneuro provides comparable performance to PMOD without the need to acquire brain MRI. Therefore, MIMneuro might be suitable for clinical use to determine amyloid positivity.

Although a few automated hippocampal subfield segmentation methods have been developed, the effects of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) on the hippocampal subfield volumes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the hippocampal subfield volume changes and their relationships with various neuropsychological tests in aMCI using an automated hippocampal subfield segmentation technique. Forty-five subjects with aMCI and 49 group-matched healthy control subjects underwent 3-tesla MRI scanning, and hippocampal subfield volumes were measured and compared. Additionally, we explored the correlation pattern between hippocampal subfield volumes and the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-K) neuropsychological test scores in aMCI subjects. Subjects with aMCI exhibited significant hippocampal volume reductions in the presubiculum, subiculum and cornu ammonis 2-3 areas compared with healthy subjects. In addition, we also found significant positive correlations between presubiculum and subicular area volumes and the CERAD-K verbal and visuospatial delayed recall scores in aMCI. This study was the first to explore the relationships between hippocampal subfield volumes and various types of cognitive performances in aMCI. These structural changes might be at the core of the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of hippocampal dysfunction in aMCI.

Purpose: The objective of this study is to define the clinical implications of consolidations in nodular bronchiectatic type Mycobacterium avium complex (NBMAC) infection. Materials and Methods: A total of 69 patients (M : F = 17 : 52; mean age, 64 years; age range, 41-85 years) with MAC isolated in the sputum culture and nodular bronchiectasis on the initial and follow-up CT scans were included. We retrospectively reviewed the incidence of consolidation and analyzed its clinical course by using radiographic changes with or without anti-MAC drug therapy. Results: In 44 of the 69 cases (64%), focal consolidations were seen on the initial and follow-up CT images. In 35 of the 44 (80%) cases, consolidations completely regressed, and in 3 cases (7%), consolidations partially regressed within 2 months with only antibiotics. In 2 cases (5%), the consolidations remained stable for over 2 months without anti-MAC drug therapy. Only in 4 cases (9%) did the consolidations improve after anti-MAC drug therapy. In 11 of the 38 cases (29%) with responsiveness to antibiotics, non-mycobacterial micro-organisms were identified in sputum, including pseudomonas, hemophilus, staphylococcus, and others. Conclusion: In NB-MAC, consolidations are commonly present on CT. In these conditions, most of consolidations result from pneumonia other than MAC.

Objective: To evaluate the high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings of bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Materials and Methods: During the past three years, 11 patients were diagnosed as having BO after BMT when they developed irreversible air flow obstruction, with an FEV 1 value of less than 80% of the baseline value, without any clinical evidence of infection. All 11 patients underwent HRCT, of whom eight also underwent follow-up HRCT. The HRCT images were assessed retrospectively for the presence of decreased lung attenuation, segmental or subsegmental bronchial dilatation, diminution of peripheral vascularity, centrilobular nodules, and branching linear structure on the inspiratory images. The lobar distribution of the decreased lung attenuation and bronchial dilatation was also examined. The presence of air trapping was investigated on the expiratory images. The interval changes of the HRCT findings were evaluated in those patients who had followup images. Results: Abnormal HRCT findings were present in all cases; the most common abnormalities were decreased lung attenuation (n=11), subsegmental bronchial dilatation (n=6), diminution of peripheral vascularity (n=6), centrilobular nodules or branching linear structure (n=3), and segmental bronchial dilatation (n=3). Expiratory air trapping was noted in all patients. The decreased lung attenuation and bronchial dilatations were more frequent or extensive in the lower lobes. Interval changes were found in all patients with follow-up HRCT: increased extent of decreased lung attenuation (n=7); newly developed or progressed bronchial dilatation (n=4); and increased lung volume (n=3). Conclusion: HRCT scans are abnormal in patients with BO, with the most commonly observed finding being areas of decreased lung attenuation. While the HRCT findings are not specific, it is believed that their common features can assist in the diagnosis of BO in BMT recipients.

BACKGROUND Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts (LTGDCs) are very rare and liable to be misdiagnosed as simple vallecular or mucus retention cysts. We recognized the importance of complete resection by means of the Sistrunk operation and applied the revised surgical technique to the treatment of LTGDCs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of surgical management of LTGDCs from the author's series and analyze its utility. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twelve patients, 10 male and 2 female, who were diagnosed with LTGDCs between January 2007 and December 2012, underwent endoscopic radical resection with microdissection electrodes. All cases were evaluated by enhanced CT and flexible laryngoscope before surgery. We reviewed the collected data including presentation, CT findings, surgical techniques, postoperative complication, and recurrence. RESULTS Most adult LTGDCs presented with foreign body sensation, while one infant presented acute upper airway obstruction. All cysts abutted on the hyoid bone and were located at the midline of the posterior tongue. Endoscopic radical resection with microdissection electrodes was possible by dissecting hyoid periosteum without significant morbidity. All patients excluding 1 infant were not intubated electively overnight and went home the following morning. All patients showed no evidence of recurrence during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS We found that the diagnosis of LTGDCs must be based on the anatomic relationship with the hyoid bone by enhanced sagittal neck CT. Endoscopic radical resection with microdissection electrodes can be recommended for reducing recurrence and morbidity by dissecting the hyoid perichondrium in the treatment of LTGDCs.

We report the first case of Killian-Jamieson diverticulum (KJD) found because of an embedded fish bone. A 52-year-old female patient presented with a foreign body sensation after accidentally ingesting a fish bone. A plain x-ray revealed a linear hyperopaque lesion in the upper esophagus, but the foreign body could not be found on flexible esophagoscopy. Enhanced neck CT revealed an esophageal diverticulum containing a long embedded fish bone. After removing the bone via rigid esophagoscopy under general anesthesia, pharyngoesophagography confirmed the KJD without contrast leakage. Any pharyngoesophageal diverticulum found following accidental fish bone impaction should be evaluated closely radiologically, such as with CT and a barium esophagogram, to rule out complications such as esophageal perforation. For a small KJD, not a Zenker diverticulum, resection via an open approach is more reliable than endoscopic diverticulostomy due to the difficult transoral manipulation and possibility of recurrent laryngeal nerve damage.

The gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. The gastrointestinal stromal tumor universally expresses KIT and DOG-1 and frequently harbors oncogenic mutations in the KIT gene. While the gastrointestinal stromal tumor usually arises in the alimentary tract, it is rarely found in the extragastrointestinal area. When it is, it is called an extragastrointestinal stromal tumor. Although the pathogenesis, prognostic factors and outcomes of gastrointestinal stromal tumors are well known, those of extragastrointestinal stromal tumors have not been fully studied. We report, herein, a unique primary extragastrointestinal stromal tumor from the pleura in a 73-year-old woman who presented with pleural mass. The extragastrointestinal stromal tumor was surgically resected and confirmed by means of an immunohistochemical study and a molecular analysis.

Background:Although previous studies on late life depression (LLD) have shown morphological abnormalities in frontal–striatal–temporal areas, alterations in coordinated patterns of structural brain networks in LLD are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in gray matter structural brain network between LLD and healthy controls.Methods:We used gray matter volume measurement from magnetic resonance imaging to investigate large-scale structural brain networks in 37 LLD patients and 40 normal controls. Brain networks were constructed by thresholding gray matter volume correlation matrices of 90 regions and analyzed using graph theoretical approaches.Results:Although both LLD and control groups showed a small-world organization of group networks, there were no differences in the clustering coefficient, the path length, and the small-world index across a wide range of network density. Compared with controls, LLD patients showed decreased nodal betweenness in the medial orbitofrontal and angular gyrus regions. In addition, LLD patients showed hub regions in superior temporal gyrus and middle cingulate gyrus, and putamen. On the other hand, the control group showed hub regions in the medial orbitofrontal gyrus, middle cingulate gyrus, and cuneus.Conclusion:Our findings suggest that the gray matter structural networks are not globally but regionally altered in LLD patients. This multivariate structural analysis using graph theory might provide a more appropriate paradigm for understanding complicated neurobiological mechanism of LLD.

The aim of this study was to investigate the microstructural alterations of white matter (WM) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with apathy and to observe the relationships with the severity of apathy. Sixty drug-naïve subjects took part in this study (30 apathetic and 30 nonapathetic subjects with AD). The loss of integrity in WM was compared in AD patients with and without apathy through measurement of fractional anisotropy (FA) using by tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). In addition, we explored the correlation pattern between FA values and the severity of apathy in AD patients with apathy. The apathy group had significantly reduced FA values (p(corrected)

Objectives The purpose of this study is to compare the various magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences when they are used to visualize and evaluate cerebral venous thrombosis. Methods Eleven patients with cerebral venous thrombosis were retrospectively analyzed using computed tomography, MRI, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and conventional angiography. The MR sequence included T1-weighted spin echo (SE) imaging, obtained before and after administration of contrast medium, T2-weighted turbo spin echo (TSE), fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), T2*-weighted conventional gradient-echo (GRE), as well as three-dimensional (3D) venous time-of-flight MRA and conventional angiography. Results In all of our patients, the venous sinus thromboses were most successfully detected during the T2*-weighted GRE sequence. The thrombosis was well visualized with the T1-weighted SE sequence in three of four patients in whom it was in the subacute stage. The T2*-weighted GRE sequence was superior to the T2-weighted TSE, T1-weighted SE, and FLAIR sequences in all patients. Enhanced 3D MR venography showed the thrombosed segment of the venous sinus and well correlated with the conventional angiographic findings. Conclusions The T2*-weighted conventional GRE sequences may be the best method for detecting of cerebral venous thrombosis. Therefore, it would seem to be beneficial to integrate a T2*-weighted conventional GRE sequence into the MR protocol to diagnose cerebral venous thrombosis.

Previous studies have carried out hippocampal shape analysis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients using automated segmentation techniques. However, the relationships between hippocampal deformations and various episodic memory impairments were not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate hippocampal shape changes and their relationships with various episodic memory impairments in aMCI. Hippocampal volumes and deformations were compared between the aMCI and the controls. In addition, we explored the correlation pattern between hippocampal deformations and cognitive dysfunctions in aMCI using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Patients with aMCI exhibited significant hippocampal deformations in the right cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) and subiculum areas compared with healthy individuals. Significant correlations were observed between constructional recall scores and the right CA1 and subiculum areas in aMCI. Verbal delayed recall scores were also significantly correlated with the left CA1 and subiculum areas in aMCI. This study was the first to explore the relationships between hippocampal deformations and various types of cognitive performances in aMCI. These structural changes in the hippocampal CA1 and subiculum areas might be at the core of underlying neurobiological mechanisms of hippocampal dysfunction and their relevance to verbal and visuospatial delayed recall in aMCI.

Previous studies have shown an association between late-onset depression (LOD) and cognitive impairment in older adults. However, the neural correlates of this relationship are not yet clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in both cortical thickness and subcortical volumes between drug-naive LOD patients and healthy controls and explore the relationship between LOD and cognitive impairments. A total of 48 elderly, drug-naive patients with LOD and 47 group-matched healthy control subjects underwent 3T MRI scanning, and the cortical thickness was compared between the groups in multiple locations, across the continuous cortical surface.
