The aim of this research was to investigate the factors associated with postponing dental attendance amongst Japanese workers during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.We conducted an internet-based survey in Japan from November 24 to 29, 2021. The participants were selected from people registered with an online research company. The inclusion criteria for this study were full-time or part-time workers aged 20 to 69 years. Participants filled out a questionnaire about their oral health, behaviour, and working conditions.A total of 1840 participants were included in the analysis. Three hundred ninety-eight participants (21.5%) answered that they postponed dental attendance due to COVID-19. Multiple logistic regression showed that women were more likely to postpone dental attendance (odds ratio [OR], 1.74; 95% confidence interval, 1.33-2.26). Moreover, employment status, household income, changes in income, working at home, interdental cleaning device use, regular dental attendance, awareness of untreated teeth, and dental pain were also associated with postponing dental attendance. The results of decision tree analysis showed that regular dental attenders with dental pain were the most likely to postpone dental attendance.The characteristics of postponed dental visits for Japanese workers differ depending on whether one is a regular dental attender or not. Amongst regular dental attenders, worsening oral health due to interruptions in dental attendance is concerning. Meanwhile, untreated teeth might be neglected amongst nonregular dental attenders. Preventing patients from refraining from dental attendance, regardless of whether or not they are regular dental attenders, is important during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background More than 10 years have passed since the first nationwide study on the reasons for tooth extraction in Japan. In the present study, we conducted the second nationwide survey to update the previous data. Methods This was a descriptive study. A sample population consisting of 5,250 dentists was selected by systematic random sampling using the 2018 membership directory of the Japan Dental Association. The reason for each permanent tooth extraction was documented by each dentist during a period of 1 week from June 4 to June 10, 2018. A questionnaire was provided for documentation. Reasons for tooth extraction were categorised into 6 groups as follows: caries, periodontal disease, fracture, orthodontics, impacted teeth, and others. Results A total of 2345 identified dentists responded to the questionnaire (recovery rate: 44.8%). Information on 7809 extracted teeth from 6398 patients was obtained. Periodontal disease was the main reason for tooth extraction for both sexes (men: 40.4%, women: 34.9%). Caries accounted for 30.2% of tooth extractions among men and 29.0% among women. Periodontal disease was predominant in the groups older than 55 years of age. Dental fracture accounted for 16.8% of tooth extractions among men and 19.2% among women. Conclusions Caries and periodontal disease are still the main reasons for tooth extraction in Japan. Moreover, dentists should note that fractures accounted for approximately one-fifth of permanent tooth extractions after the age of 45 years.

The purpose of this study was to clinically investigate double-crown-retained removable partial dentures (DRPDs) and abutment teeth at dental clinics. Only cases with complete arch reconstruction were included. Endpoints were replacement of denture and loss of abutment tooth. A total of 213 dentures with 1030 abutment teeth were analyzed. During the observation period, 32 dentures were replaced. The mean observation period was 12.7 (± 6.6) years (range 3 to 36). By the Kaplan-Meier method, survival rate at 10 years was 94.7% and at 20 years was 70.8%. Estimated mean survival period was 27.1 years. Cox regression analysis showed that risk factor for replacement was good occlusion as indicated by Eichner index groups A to B3 (HR 2.81). The main reason for denture replacement was loss of abutment teeth. Survival rate of abutment teeth at 10 years was 83.8% and at 20 years was 66.3%. The analysis revealed six risk factors: male gender (HR 1.76), age range 65–89 years (HR 1.51), posterior teeth (HR 1.60), higher number of present teeth in opposite jaw (HR 1.69), lower number of abutment teeth (HR 1.76), and short inner crown (HR 2.28). DRPDs last over 20 years, making them a durable investment in one’s oral health; their survival is influenced by loss of abutment teeth. In cases where there are few teeth remaining in a jaw, DRPDs represent a suitable treatment that makes use of the remaining teeth, even if the abutment teeth are non-vital.

Purpose: To directly compare the utility for therapeutic outcome prediction of dynamic first-pass contrast-enhanced (CE)-perfusion area-detector computed tomography (ADCT), MR imaging assessed with the same mathematical method and 2-[fluorine-18]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose–positron emission tomography combined with CT (PET/CT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with chemoradiotherapy. Materials and Methods: Forty-three consecutive stage IIIB NSCLC patients, consisting of 25 males (mean age ± standard deviation: 66.6 ± 8.7 years) and 18 females (66.4 ± 8.2 years) underwent PET/CT, dynamic CE-perfusion ADCT and MR imaging, chemoradiotherapy, and follow-up examination. In each patient, total, pulmonary arterial, and systemic arterial perfusions were calculated from both perfusion data and SUVmax on PET/CT, assessed for each targeted lesion, and averaged to determine final values. Receiver operating characteristics analyses were performed to compare the utility for distinguishing responders from non-responders using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumor (RECIST) 1.1 criteria. Overall survival (OS) assessed with each index were compared between two groups by means of the Kaplan–Meier method followed by the log-rank test. Results: Area under the curve (Az) for total perfusion on ADCT was significantly larger than that of pulmonary arterial perfusion (P < 0.05). Az of total perfusion on MR imaging was significantly larger than that of pulmonary arterial perfusion (P < 0.05). Mean OS of responder and non-responder groups were significantly different for total and systemic arterial (P < 0.05) perfusion. Conclusion: Dynamic first-pass CE-perfusion ADCT and MR imaging as well as PET/CT are useful for early prediction of treatment response by NSCLC patients treated with chemoradiotherapy.

Purpose To prospectively compare the capability of dynamic first-pass contrast-enhanced (CE) perfusion MR imaging with ultra-short TE and area-detector CT (ADCT), analyzed with the same mathematical methods, and that of FDG-PET/CT for diagnosis and management of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs). Methods and materials Our institutional review board approved this study and written informed consent was obtained from all subjects. A total 57 consecutive patients with 71 nodules prospectively underwent dynamic CE-perfusion ADCT and MR imaging with ultra-short TE, FDG-PET/CT, as well as microbacterial and/or pathological examinations. The nodules were classified into malignant nodules (n = 45) and benign nodules (n = 26). Pulmonary arterial, systemic arterial and total perfusions were determined by means of dual-input maximum slope models on ADCT and MR imaging and maximum values of standard uptake values (SUVmax) on PET/CT. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed for each index, and sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were compared by McNemar's test. Results Areas under the curve (Azs) of total perfusion on ADCT (Az = 0.89) and MR imaging (Az = 0.88) were significantly larger than those of systemic arterial perfusion and MR imaging (p Conclusion Dynamic CE-perfusion MR imaging with ultra-short TE and ADCT and have similar potential capabilities, and are superior to FDG-PET/CT in this setting.

To directly compare the effect of a reconstruction algorithm on nodule detection capability of the computer-aided detection (CADe) system using standard-dose, reduced-dose and ultra-low dose chest CTs with and without adaptive iterative dose reduction 3D (AIDR 3D).Our institutional review board approved this study, and written informed consent was obtained from each patient. Standard-, reduced- and ultra-low-dose chest CTs (250 mA, 50 mA and 10 mA) were used to examine 40 patients, 21 males (mean age ± standard deviation: 63.1 ± 11.0 years) and 19 females (mean age, 65.1 ± 12.7 years), and reconstructed as 1 mm-thick sections. Detection of nodule equal to more than 4 mm in dimeter was automatically performed by our proprietary CADe software. The utility of iterative reconstruction method for improving nodule detection capability, sensitivity and false positive rate (/case) of the CADe system using all protocols were compared by means of McNemar's test or signed rank test.Sensitivity (SE: 0.43) and false-positive rate (FPR: 7.88) of ultra-low-dose CT without AIDR 3D was significantly inferior to those of standard-dose CTs (with AIDR 3D: SE, 0.78, p .0001, FPR, 3.05, p .0001; and without AIDR 3D: SE, 0.80, p .0001, FPR: 2.63, p .0001), reduced-dose CTs (with AIDR 3D: SE, 0.81, p .0001, FPR, 3.05, p .0001; and without AIDR 3D: SE, 0.62, p .0001, FPR: 2.95, p .0001) and ultra-low-dose CT with AIDR 3D (SE, 0.79, p .0001, FPR, 4.88, p = .0001).The AIDR 3D has a significant positive effect on nodule detection capability of the CADe system even when radiation dose is reduced.

The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of healthy elderly individuals undergoing regular dental check-ups and identify any environmental or associated oral factors. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was used to interview 216 individuals attending 2 welfare facilities for the elderly, of whom 160 were included in the final analysis. Items comprised age, sex, number of residual teeth, frequency of teeth/denture cleaning, subjective chewing ability, denture use, oral status, regular dental check-ups, visitation of the same dentist, number of dental visits in the past year, General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) (Japanese version) score, living situation, and use of routine medication. Individuals undergoing regular dental check-ups were defined as those with a primary dentist whom they saw for dental check-ups at least once a year. The rate of individuals undergoing regular dental check-ups was 75.0% in men aged 60-74 years, 58.8% in women aged 60-74 years, 70.0% in men aged 75 years or over, and 45.3% in women aged 75 years or over. Logistic regression analysis revealed a higher number of residual teeth (odds ratio [OR]=2.664 in comparison with those with fewer than 20 teeth, p=0.0427); cleaning teeth/dentures 3 or more times per day (OR=2.546 in comparison with cleaning them twice per day or less, p=0.0157); and a higher GOHAI score (OR=2.742 in comparison with those with a GOHAI score of less than 58, p=0.0263) as factors significantly correlated with undergoing regular dental check-ups. In conclusion, the results revealed that individuals undergoing regular dental check-ups had 20 or more residual teeth, cleaned their teeth/denture 3 or more times per day, and had a higher GOHAI score. This indicates that the best predictive factor for undergoing regular dental check-ups in healthy elderly individuals is their GOHAI score.

Diabetes mellitus is closely related to oral health. We aimed to determine the relationship between diabetes mellitus and tooth extraction due to periodontal disease and dental caries. Japan’s second nationwide survey data collected from 4 June to 10 June 2018 was used to identify reasons for tooth extraction among patients aged &gt, 40 years. General dentists collected information on patients who underwent tooth extraction procedures, and the presence of diabetes mellitus was determined through interviews. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to investigate the relationship between diabetes mellitus and the reasons for tooth extraction, including periodontal disease and dental caries. In total, 2345 dentists responded to the survey (response rate 44.8%). We analyzed data on 4625 extracted teeth from 3750 patients (1815 males and 1935 females). Among patients with self-reported diabetes mellitus, 55.4% had extractions due to periodontal disease compared to 46.7% of such extractions among those without self-reported diabetes mellitus. Self-reported diabetes mellitus was significantly associated with tooth extraction due to periodontal disease. No significant differences were observed in dental caries according to self-reported diabetes mellitus status. This study provides further evidence of a significant association between diabetes mellitus and tooth extraction due to periodontal disease.

The objective of our study was to directly compare the capability of dynamic first-pass contrast-enhanced (CE) perfusion area-detector CT (ADCT) and FDG PET/CT for differentiation of metastatic from nonmetastatic lymph nodes and assessment of N stage in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC).Seventy-seven consecutive patients, 45 men (mean age ± SD, 70.4 ± 5.9 years) and 32 women (71.2 ± 7.7 years), underwent dynamic first-pass CE-perfusion ADCT at two or three different positions for covering the entire thorax, FDG PET/CT, surgical treatment, and pathologic examination. From all ADCT data for each of the subjects, a whole-chest perfusion map was computationally generated using the dual- and single-input maximum slope and Patlak plot methods. For quantitative N stage assessment, perfusion parameters and the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVThe area under the ROC curve (ADynamic first-pass CE-perfusion ADCT is as useful as FDG PET/CT for the differentiation of metastatic from nonmetastatic lymph nodes and assessment of N stage in patients with NSCLC.

To prospectively and directly compare the capability for assessments of regional ventilation and pulmonary functional loss in smokers of xenon-ventilation CT obtained with the dual-energy CT (DE-CT) and subtraction CT (Sub-CT) MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three consecutive smokers (15 men and 8 women, mean age: 69.7±8.7years) underwent prospective unenhanced and xenon-enhanced CTs, the latter by Sub-CT and DE-CT methods, ventilation SPECT and pulmonary function tests. Sub-CT was generated from unenhanced and xenon-enhanced CT, and all co-registered SPECT/CT data were produced from SPECT and unenhanced CT data. For each method, regional ventilation was assessed by using a 11-point scoring system on a per-lobe basis. To determine the functional lung volume by each method, it was also calculated for individual sublets with a previously reported method. To determine inter-observer agreement for each method, ventilation defect assessment was evaluated by using the χ2 test with weighted kappa statistics. For evaluation of the efficacy of each method for pulmonary functional loss assessment, functional lung volume was correlated with%FEVEach inter-observer agreement was rated as substantial (Sub-CT: κ=0.69, p0.0001; DE-CT: κ=0.64, p0.0001; SPECT/CT: κ=0.64, p0.0001). Functional lung volume for each method showed significant to good correlation with%FEVXenon-enhanced CT obtained by Sub-CT can be considered at least as efficacious as that obtained by DE-CT and SPECT/CT for assessment of ventilation abnormality and pulmonary functional loss in smokers.

Background Although diabetes mellitus is reported to be related to tooth loss, there is limited population-based evidence for this relationship. We investigated the actual situation of tooth loss by performing a population-based survey using information obtained from the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups (NDB) in Japan. Methods Medical, dental and pharmacy claims data generated between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016 were obtained and analysed. Patients with medical and pharmacy claims of diabetes mellitus were allocated to the diabetes mellitus group. Patients with medical claims of acute upper respiratory inflammation, but without claims of diabetes mellitus, were allocated to the control group. The number of claims involving tooth loss, treatment of periodontal disease and visits to medical and dental institutions were obtained from the NDB. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the nature of tooth loss between patients with diabetes mellitus and the control groups. Results There were 5,248,405 patients in the control group and 1,570,082 patients in the diabetes mellitus group. Patients in the diabetes mellitus group showed a higher level of tooth loss than patients in the control group, among both sexes. Patients with diabetes mellitus tended to lose their posterior teeth at an earlier age than patients in the control group. Moreover, patients in the diabetes mellitus group showed greater tooth loss, regardless of whether or not periodontal disease was treated. Conclusion Patients with diabetes mellitus show a higher level of tooth loss than those without diabetes mellitus, based on the results of a population-based survey.

To determine the value of a raw data-based metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) algorithm for image quality improvement in abdominal CT for patients with small metal implants. Fifty-eight patients with small metal implants (3–15 mm in size) who underwent treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma were imaged with CT. CT data were reconstructed by filtered back projection with and without SEMAR algorithm in axial and coronal planes. To evaluate metal artefact reduction, mean CT number (HU and SD) and artefact index (AI) values within the liver were calculated. Two readers independently evaluated image quality of the liver and pancreas and visualization of vasculature using a 5-point visual score. To directly compare the capability of hybrid-type iterative reconstruction (i.e., adaptive iterative dose reduction using 3D processing: AIDR 3D) and filter back projection (FBP) for radiation dose reduction during dynamic contrast-enhanced (CE-) perfusion area-detector CT (ADCT) for lung and nodule perfusion assessment.Thirty-six patients with lung cancers who underwent perfusion ADCT (SD-ADCT) at 120 mA and were enrolled in this study. ADCT data at 80 mA (reduced-dose ADCT: RD-ADCT), 60 mA (low-dose ADCT: LD-ADCT) and 40 mA (very low-dose ADCT: VLD-ADCT) were computationally simulated using SD-ADCT data, and reconstructed with and without AIDR 3D. Image noise and lung and nodule perfusion parameters were evaluated using ROI measurements. To determine the utility of AIDR 3D for dose reduction, image noise was compared between each protocol with and without AIDR 3D by means of the t-test. Correlations and limits of agreement for parameters obtained with SD-ADCT and other protocols were also evaluated.Image noise of all protocols with AIDR 3D was significantly lower than that of LD-ADCT and VLD-ADCT without AIDR 3D (p0.05). Significant correlations for image noise between SD-ADCT and all protocols with AIDR 3D (0.45 ≤ r ≤ 0.99, p0.0001) were equal to or better than that without AIDR 3D (0.28 ≤ r ≤ 0.99, p0.0001). The limits of agreement for perfusion parameters with AIDR 3D were smaller than those without AIDR 3D for each tube current.AIDR 3D is more effective than FBP for dose reduction of perfusion ADCT while maintaining image quality and reducing measurement errors.

The aim of this retrospective study was to compare number of teeth lost among regular attenders (RAs), irregular attenders (IRAs), and problem-oriented attenders (POAs) at dental offices over a 10-yr observation period. Information on tooth loss was obtained from general practitioners. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on appointment adherence. A total of 1,886 teeth were lost in 1,400 patients. The mean number of teeth lost in men was 2.2±2.6 per patient over 10 yr in POAs, 1.2±1.7 in IRAs, and 1.5±1.5 in RAs. This number was significantly lower in IRAs (p = 0.011) or RAs (p=0.012) than in POAs. When the dependent variable was defined as "a patient with at least 2 or more extracted teeth", the independent variables showed the following correlations with tooth loss: IRAs (OR: 0.54; 95%CI: 0.35-0.84), RAs (OR: 0.65; 95%CI: 0.47-0.89), man (OR: 1.43; 95%CI: 1.11-1.83), hypertension (OR: 1.38; 95%CI: 1.04-1.85), 20-25 present teeth (OR: 2.41; 95%CI: 1.81-3.22), and 1-19 present teeth (OR: 3.75; 95%CI: 2.73-5.16). The risk of tooth loss showed a 0.65-fold increase in RAs undergoing maintenance compared with POAs. Motivating patients to visit the dentist more regularly and undergo maintenance is important. The present results may be of use to dental professionals in providing patients with detailed information on potential tooth loss and associated risk factors with the aim of achieving such a change in behavior.

In 2009, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology launched its "Program for Promoting University Education and Student Support, Theme A: Program for Promoting University Education Reform". The ministry's stated aims were to 1) enhance student training centered on the needs of the individual patient; 2) improve their ability to make comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plans; and 3) instill high ethical standards and good communication skills. One of the main pillars of this project was to establish an educational organization aimed at encouraging public participation, the "Patient Community". The aim was to have members of this community roleplay patients in the Communication Studies component of the 1st-4th years of dental school. It was hoped that they would be able to respond to the students in a more realistic manner than simulated patients. Here, the number of Patient Community members and number who attended Communication Studies classes in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014 were investigated. The results showed that the number registered in the Patient Community increased annually, as did the number participating in Communication Studies classes, which rose in accordance with the number of classes held. No difference was observed in the number of attendees per Communication Studies class by grade (years 1-4). The number of members never attending Community Studies classes increased annually, although some members repeatedly attended. These findings suggest that the members who regularly participate tend to remain the same.

The purpose of this study based on a cross-sectional internet survey was to investigate the relationship between risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and self-assessed oral health status. The participants, who comprised individuals registered with an online research company, were required to complete a self-reported questionnaire. Those answering in the affirmative to both of the following two questions were placed in the OSA-risk group, while those answering in the negative were assigned to the control group: 'Have other people noticed pauses in your breathing while you are sleeping?' and 'Do you feel excessively sleepy during the daytime?'. A total of 493 were included in the OSA-risk group and 2,560 in the control group. Among the total 3,053 respondents, the highest prevalence for OSA risk in men was in the 50-59-year age range, although this tended to level off after age 60 years. No such trend was observed in women, however. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the relationship between risk of OSA and self-assessed oral health status. Significant correlations were observed with the following parameters: difficulty in opening mouth (odds ratio [OR]: 2.66; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.647-4.311), dry mouth (OR: 2.11; CI: 1.544-2.876), bad breath (OR: 1.69; CI: 1.309-2.186), gingival bleeding (OR: 1.48; CI: 1.134-1.932), and gingival swelling (OR: 1.44; CI: 1.046-1.981). These results suggest a relationship between risk of OSA and self-assessed oral health status, indicating that treating OSA might improve oral health status. Further study is needed to demonstrate a causal relationship between OSA and self-assessed oral health status, however.

Diagnosing vertical root fracture (VRF) is difficult. Here, we retrospectively investigated the duration from initial symptoms to a definite diagnosis of VRF in dental offices. Data were collected on patients with VRF between July 2013 and June 2015. Initial symptoms were ascertained from clinical records. The focus was on the maxillary second premolars and mesial roots of the mandibular first molars, where VRF is most frequent. All VRF in the bilateral dentition was analyzed. Only cases in which the buccal-lingual plane of the root was fractured were included. Data from 31 dental offices revealed a total of 39 VRFs in the maxillary second premolars and 43 in the mandibular mesial roots of the first molars. The patients comprised 42 males and 40 females, and the average age was 59.7±11.6 years at initial onset of symptoms. The mean duration from initial symptoms to a definite diagnosis in the maxillary second premolars was 18.3±22.5 months, while that in the mandibular first molars was 16.1±17.8 months. The cumulative diagnostic rate was 48.7% at 12 months and 79.5% at 24 months in the maxillary second premolars, and 38.1% at 12 months and 86.0% at 24 months in the mandibular first molars. No significant difference was observed between tooth type. If VRF is suspected, doctors should explain the risks of tooth extraction and begin considering treatment options. The present results revealed that 80% of VRFs were diagnosed within 2 years of initial onset of symptoms.

Oral health instruction for adults should take into account the potential effect of tooth loss, as this has been suggested to predict further tooth loss. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether further tooth loss could be predicted from the number of present teeth (PT). We employed the same method as in our previous study, this time using two national surveys of dental disease, which were deemed to represent a generational cohort. Percentiles were estimated using the cumulative frequency distribution of PT from the two surveys. The first was a survey of 704 participants aged 50-59 years conducted in 2005, and the second was a survey of 747 participants aged 56-65 years conducted in 2011. The 1st to 100th percentiles of the number of PT were calculated for both age groups. Using these percentiles and a generational cohort analysis based on the two surveys, the number of teeth lost per year could be calculated. The distribution of number of teeth lost generated a convex curve. Peak tooth loss occurred at around 12-14 PT, with 0.54 teeth being lost per year. The percentage of teeth lost (per number of PT) increased as number of PT decreased. The results confirmed that tooth loss promotes further tooth loss. These data should be made available for use in adult oral health education.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether number of non-vital teeth was an indicator of tooth loss during maintenance. Thirty-three general practitioners provided data on 321 patients undergoing maintenance over 10 years. The number of present teeth (PT), smoking status, level of bone loss, number of non-vital teeth, and reason for tooth loss during that period were investigated. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify whether the number of non-vital teeth was associated with tooth loss. The average number of lost teeth was 1.07±1.82; that of PT at baseline was 24.4±3.9; and that of non-vital teeth at baseline was 5.4±4.5. Multiple logistic regression revealed a significant association between >8 non-vital teeth and tooth loss during maintenance (odds ratio [OR]: 2.40; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18-4.87). It also demonstrated relationships between >8 non-vital teeth and root fracture or caries (OR: 3.90; 95%CI: 1.68-9.03 or OR: 2.85, 95%CI: 1.14-7.10, respectively). The number of non-vital teeth was associated with tooth loss during maintenance. The results suggest that patients with many non-vital teeth before commencement of maintenance are particularly at risk of tooth loss due to root fracture or caries. Therefore, the number of non-vital teeth offers a useful indicator of potential tooth loss.

The goal of this study was to investigate length of time between full pulpotomy and a definitive diagnosis of vertical root fracture (VRF), as well as the age at which this was made. The participants comprised 63 dental patients (40 men and 23 women) with a mean age of 65.7±10.4 years in whom a definitive diagnosis of VRF had been made between July 2013 and June 2015, and who had also undergone a full pulpotomy. The data on all these cases were obtained from 22 dental clinics belonging to a clinical study group. The mean duration between a full pulpotomy and a definitive diagnosis of VRF was 141.0±88.9 months. The results showed no differences in terms of sex, mandible/maxilla, or tooth type. No relationship was observed between age at which the diagnosis was made and length of time between full pulpotomy and diagnosis (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.162) (p>0.05). Most diagnoses of VRF were made in patients aged over 50 years, irrespective of length of time between full pulpotomy and the diagnosis. These results suggest that age is a stronger indicator of VRF than length of time between full pulpotomy and a definitive diagnosis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, by gender, of vertical root fracture (VRF) as the main reason for the extraction of permanent teeth in dental clinics in Tokyo.Participating dentists were requested to provide information about extractions of permanent teeth they had performed from 1 January 2013 to 30 June 2013. The main reasons for extraction were categorized as follows: VRF, caries (horizontal root fracture included), periodontal disease and others.At a total of 24 clinics, 736 teeth were extracted from 626 patients during the 6-month period. A total of 233 teeth were extracted by VRF (31.7%), and 93.6% of these were endodontically treated teeth. Among non-vital extracted teeth, 82.1% (179/218) had cast posts or screw posts. The percentage of extraction due to VRF was 29.4% in males and 34.7% in females. In females, the percentage of extractions due to VRF (34.7%) was higher than for periodontal disease (28.1%). In males, the percentage of extractions due to VRF increased with age (p 0.05). The tooth types with the highest percentage of extractions due to VRF were the upper canine (46.7%), lower second premolar (48.0%) and lower first molar (50.0%) in males and the upper first premolar (43.3%), upper second premolar (44.4%), lower second premolar (53.8%) and lower first molar (54.5%) in females.These results indicate that we need to pay more attention to maintaining vital teeth while being aware of the particular tooth types in which VRF most frequently occurs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate efficacy of two types of emphysema quantification: percentage of low-attenuation lung regions (%LA); and size distribution of these regions. On a log-log plot, cumulative frequency-size distribution of low-attenuation lung regions can be fitted by a straight line whose slope (D) has been reported to reflect diffusing capacity. In this study, %LA and D were compared with pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters, especially with ratio of diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide to effective alveolar ventilation (i.e., DLCO/VA).Thin-section unenhanced CT images were acquired from 30 patients (25 men, five women; mean [SD] age, 70.1 ± 12.1 years), of whom 25 had received diagnosis of COPD, and %LA and D were calculated at 20 thresholds, ranging from -995 to -900 HU. To determine utility of %LA and D, we used Pearson's correlation for emphysema quantification and PFT. Significance of the coefficients was determined with Bonferroni correction (p0.0025). Finally, the relationships between emphysema quantification and DLCO/VA were examined by linear models and Akaike information criterion (AIC).The correlation coefficients for %LA and DLCO/VA were statistically significant at all the thresholds (optimal coefficient, -0.761). The correlation coefficients for D and DLCO/VA were statistically significant at the thresholds from -945 to -900 HU (optimal coefficient, -0.646). AIC values showed that the most accurate prediction of DLCO/VA was obtained by the model incorporating both %LA and D.Both %LA and D showed significant correlation with DLCO/VA. Combining %LA and D resulted in more accurate evaluation of DLCO/VA than did using %LA or D alone.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of coronal and root caries in participants aged 20-59 years in Japan. The participants comprised 118 men and 23 women undergoing a re-examination 5 years after an initial examination. Lesions were classified as gingival recession, decayed root caries, or filled surfaces. The rates of incidence of coronal caries over the 5 years were 87% in women aged 20-29 years, 77% in men aged 20-29 years, 62% in men aged 30-39 years, 64% in men aged 40-49 years, and 60% in men aged 50-59 years. The rates for those observed to be at risk for the incidence of root caries were 25% for women aged 20-29 years, 16% for men aged 20-29 years, 11% for men aged 30-39 years, 43% for men aged 40-49 years, and 35% for men aged 50-59 years. The distribution for the number of new coronal and root caries lesions was 68.8% and 24.1%, respectively. Univariate logistic regression analyses for new coronal caries revealed that the risk factors were age group at baseline (OR=0.702, p=0.0440), number of coronal decayed and filled surfaces at baseline (OR=2.893, p=0.0107), and number of sound teeth at baseline (OR=3.381, p=0.0013). Gender-related risk factors in the survival of transplanted teeth with complete root formation have not yet been identified. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in tooth autotransplantation at dental clinics. We asked participating dentists to provide information on transplantations they had undertaken from 1 January 1990 to 1931 December 2010. The data were screened to exclude patients who underwent more than one transplantation, smokers or those whose smoking habits were unknown, patients under 30 or who were 70 years old and over, cases where the transplanted teeth had incomplete root formation or multiple roots and those with fewer than 20 present teeth post-operation. We analysed 73 teeth of 73 males (mean age, 47.2 years) and 106 teeth of 106 females (mean age, 45.3 years) in this study. The cumulative survival rate and mean survival time were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The cumulative survival rate for males was 88.3% at the 5-year mark, 64.8% at 10 years and 48.6% at 15 years; for females, it was 97.2% at the 5-year mark, 85.9% at 10 years and 85.9% at 15 years. A log-rank test indicated the difference between males and females to be significant (P = 0.011). There was also a significant difference in the main causes for the loss of transplanted teeth: males lost more transplanted teeth due to attachment loss than females (P < 0.05). These results indicate that males require more attention during the autotransplantation process, particularly at the stage of pre-operation evaluation and that of follow-up maintenance.

The purpose of this study was to provide the estimated percentile curves of occlusal pairs (OPs) in adults for use in oral health instruction. Data on number of present teeth (PT) were obtained from the National Report on the Survey of Dental Disease in 2005. Data from 1,535 males and 2,248 females, ranging in age from 18 to 82, were analysed. The mean number of OPs were used from our previous report. In that report we can be estimated OPs from the number of PT. In this study, PT data were replaced by the mean number of OPs. Estimated percentile curves in males, the 10th percentile of OPs was 13.7 at 60 years of age and 12.5 at 70. The 50th percentile of OPs was 12.2 at 50 years of age, 11.2 at 60 and 5.4 at 70. The 90th percentile of OPs was 7.6 at 50 years of age, 2.1 at 60 and 0 at 70. There appeared to be a cut off point after 10 OPs where the 50th to 97th percentile curves of OPs dropped off rapidly. In females, the 10th percentile of OPs was 13.4 at 60 years of age and 12.7 at 70. The 50th percentile of OPs was 11.5 at 50 years of age, 10.2 at 60 and 6.2 at 70. The 90th percentile of OPs was 7.1 at 50 years of age, 2.4 at 60 and 0 at 70. In females again the percentile curves dropped off after 10 OPs. Our results suggest that the loss of OPs may be accelerated when the number of OPs drops below 10. This means that patients need at least 10 OPs in order to maintain a stable oral status. The estimated percentile curves given in this study should be made available for use in adult oral health education.

Purpose To directly compare the capability of dynamic first-pass contrast-enhanced (CE-) perfusion area-detector CT (ADCT) and PET/CT for early prediction of treatment response, disease progression and overall survival of non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC) patients treated with chemoradiotherapy. Materials and methods Fifty-three consecutive Stage IIIB NSCLC patients who had undergone PET/CT, dynamic first-pass CE-perfusion ADCT, chemoradiotherapy, and follow-up examination were enrolled in this study. They were divided into two groups: 1) complete or partial response (CR+PR) and 2) stable or progressive disease (SD+PD). Pulmonary arterial and systemic arterial perfusions and total perfusion were assessed at targeted lesions with the dual-input maximum slope method, permeability surface and distribution volume with the Patlak plot method, tumor perfusion with the single-input maximum slope method, and SUV max , and results were averaged to determine final values for each patient. Next, step-wise regression analysis was used to determine which indices were the most useful for predicting therapeutic effect. Finally, overall survival of responders and non-responders assessed by using the indices that had a significant effect on prediction of therapeutic outcome was statistically compared. Results The step-wise regression test showed that therapeutic effect (r 2 =0.63, p=0.01) was significantly affected by the following three factors in order of magnitude of impact: systemic arterial perfusion, total perfusion, and SUV max . Mean overall survival showed a significant difference for total perfusion (p=0.003) and systemic arterial perfusion (p=0.04). Conclusion Dynamic first-pass CE-perfusion ADCT as well as PET/CT are useful for treatment response prediction in NSCLC patients treated with chemoradiotherapy.

To assess the effects of image reconstruction method on hepatic CT perfusion (CTP) values using two CT protocols with different radiation doses.Sixty patients underwent hepatic CTP and were randomly divided into two groups. Tube currents of 210 or 250 mA were used for the standard dose group and 120 or 140 mA for the low dose group. The higher currents were selected for large patients. Demographic features of the groups were compared. CT images were reconstructed by using filtered back projection (FBP), image filter (quantum de-noising, QDS), and adaptive iterative dose reduction (AIDR). Hepatic arterial and portal perfusion (HAP and HPP, ml/min/100ml) and arterial perfusion fraction (APF, %) were calculated using the dual-input maximum slope method. ROIs were placed on each hepatic segment. Perfusion and Hounsfield unit (HU) values, and image noises (standard deviations of HU value, SD) were measured and compared between the groups and among the methods.There were no significant differences in the demographic features of the groups, nor were there any significant differences in mean perfusion and HU values for either the groups or the image reconstruction methods. Mean SDs of each of the image reconstruction methods were significantly lower (p0.0001) for the standard dose group than the low dose group, while mean SDs for AIDR were significantly lower than those for FBP for both groups (p=0.0006 and 0.013). Radiation dose reductions were approximately 45%.Image reconstruction method did not affect hepatic perfusion values calculated by dual-input maximum slope method with or without radiation dose reductions. AIDR significantly reduced images noises.

The "Dental students training to address the needs of each individual patient: enhancement of ability to make a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plans with high ethical standards and good communication skills", project launched at Tokyo Dental College was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as part of its "Program for Promoting University Education and Student Support, Theme A: Program for Promoting University Education Reform" in 2009. One of the main goals of this subject is "the establishment of Patient Community". Patient Community members allowed students to gain a more realistic experience of clinical practice than simulated patients. The Patient Community consists of patients and members of the parents' association who have agreed to cooperate for the advancement of dental education, becoming involved in dental student education through Communication Studies, which are held for first- to fourth-year students. Patient Community members were recruited at the open lectures (15 times, between July 10, 2010 and November 30, 2011). The Patient Community comprised 24 members, including 8 men and 16 women by November 30, 2011. The cumulative number of attendees in Communication Studies (I-IV, 6 times) was 35, including 13 men and 22 women. Fourteen people applied for admission on the day of the open lecture. Seven people signed up between 1 and 7 days after the open lecture. On the other hand, only 3 people applied within 8 to 9 days after the open lecture. However, interestingly, the ratio of the attendance for Communication Studies by Patient Community members who applied 8 to 9 days after the open lecture was higher than that of members who applied for admission on the day of the open lecture. Since the number of Patient Community members is insufficient for the purposes of the Patient Community, it is necessary to think about how recruitment methods can be made more effective and how such open lectures should be conducted in future.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between number of present teeth (PT) and number of occlusal units (OUs). The data were obtained from a periodontal disease examination based on the health promotion law in Tokyo, Japan in 2005. Data from a total of 1,549 (524 male and 1,025 female) 60-year-old people were analyzed in this study. The number of OUs was counted by analyzing their dental charts. Any pair of opposing teeth of the same type was counted as one OU. The maximum number of OUs in a 28-tooth dentition was therefore 14. Our study revealed that the mean number of OUs decreased along with the number of PT. The OUs of the molars were lost first, followed by those of the premolars. The anterior OUs were last to be lost. The mean number of OUs was always lower than half the number of PT: 10.4 at 24 PT, 7.2 at 20 PT, 4.4 at 16 PT, and 1.3 at 10 PT. In the posterior region (premolars and molars), the mean number of OUs was 4.7 at 24 PT, 2.6 at 20 PT, and 1.0 at 16 PT. For molars, there were 1.4 OUs at 24 PT, 0.6 at 20 PT, and 0.4 at 16 PT. Participants with fewer than 20 PT had fewer than two OUs in the posterior region. This research demonstrates that the number of OUs can be estimated from the number of PT. This knowledge can be used to reveal more detailed information about the oral health status of a given population.

The purpose of this study was to investigate dental care utilization patterns in the elderly and to evaluate factors associated with regular dental check-ups in this age group. A total of 211 elderly people (50 men, 161 women) aged between 60 and 98 years were investigated. A cross-sectional survey by questionnaire was carried out on visitors to the Mihama Ikiiki Plaza (an institution for the elderly) in the city of Chiba, Japan between July and September, 2008. Items on the questionnaire included self-reported oral status, use of dentures, use of regular medication, oral problems, cleaning of teeth/dentures and dental care utilization patterns. The results showed that 135 (64.0%) of the responders had visited a dentist in the past year, 185 (87.7%) had visited the same dentist and 85 (40.3%) had had regular dental check-ups. A stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis adjusting for age and sex revealed that the factors associated with regular dental check-ups were significantly higher ADLs (odds ratio (OR)=0.439 in the partially insured and 0.192 in the fully insured in comparison with healthy subjects, p=0.0012), visiting the same dentist (OR=11.978 in comparison with not visiting the same dentist, p=0.0183) and cleaning teeth/dentures three or more times per day (OR=1.962 in comparison with cleaning them two or fewer times per day, p=0.0368). In this study, a higher ADL, visiting the same dentist and cleaning teeth/dentures three or more times per day were associated with having regular dental check-ups in the elderly. The best predictive factor for regular dental check-ups was a high ADL in the elderly.

The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for root surface caries in the elderly and to evaluate the factors associated with gingival recession, one of the main risk factors for root surface caries. Background and Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the time of infection by anaerobic gram-negative rods associated with periodontal disease, and to clarify their transmission from mother to child. Material and Methods: Seventy-eight Japanese children (including 10 siblings), aged from 3 to 9 years, and 68 mothers, were enrolled in this study. Colonization by 11 periodontal bacterial species was determined using polymerase chain reaction amplification of samples of subgingival plaque obtained from the children and their mothers. Results: The detection rates of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythensis and Treponema denticola increased in children after the age of 6 years. We found a high consistency in colonization by P. gingivalis, T. denticola, Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens in 9 of the 10 siblings. The average number of bacterial species in plaque samples harboring Fusobacterium nucleatum and/or Fusobacterium periodonticum was significantly greater than in those without, in both children and mothers. Kappa statistical analysis revealed that the detection of Capnocytophaga gingivalis, Capnocytophaga ochracea, Campylobacter rectus and T. denticola in children was consistent with that in the mother. Conclusion: Periodontal bacterial colonization in Japanese children increased with age and was associated with F. nucleatum and/or periodonticum, and the bacterial flora in children was similar to that in their mothers.

The number of children with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) has recently been increasing in Japan. Few studies have investigated the relationship between MetS and oral health. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between MetS, lifestyle, and oral health status in school children. Our goal is to utilize these results in health education aimed at preventing the onset of MetS in school children and adults. A total of 689 Japanese children (365 boys and 324 girls) aged between 10 and 13 years were examined and waist circumference (WC), ratio of WC to height, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar (FBS), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and triglyceride values determined together with oral health status, including dental caries experience (DMFT). The results revealed that 6.5% of the children fell under the health board recognized "MetS or high risk of MetS" (MetS/HR) classification. Purpose To determine the capability and influence of the mathematical method on dynamic contrast-enhanced (CE-) perfusion area detector CT (ADCT) for early prediction of treatment response as well as progression free and overall survival (PFS and OS) of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with chemoradiotherapy. Materials and methods Sixty-six consecutive stage III NSCLC patients underwent dynamic CE-perfusion ADCT examinations, chemoradiotherapy and follow-up examinations. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) criteria were used to divide all patients into responders and non-responders. Differences in each of the indices for all targeted lesions between measurements obtained 2 weeks prior to the first and the third course of chemotherapy were determined for all patients. ROC analyses were employed to determine the capability of perfusion indices as markers for distinguishing RECIST responders from non-responders. To evaluate their capability for early prediction of therapeutic effect, OS of perfusion index-based responders and non-responders were compared by using the Kaplan–Meier method followed by log-rank test. Results Area under the curve (Az) for total perfusion by means of the dual-input maximum slope method was significantly larger than that of pulmonary arterial perfusion using the same method (p = 0.007) and of perfusion with the single-input maximum slope method (p = 0.007). Mean OS demonstrated significantly difference between responder- and non-responder groups for total perfusion (p = 0.02). Conclusion Mathematical models have significant influence on assessment for early prediction of treatment response, disease progression and overall survival using dynamic CE-perfusion ADCT for NSCLC patients treated with chemoradiotherapy.

The aim of this study was to investigate sex- and age-based differences in single tooth loss in adults. The data were obtained from the results of a periodontal disease examination carried out under a health promotion law in a city in Japan in 2005. Baseline data from a total of 3,872 participants aged 40 or 60 years comprising 1,302 men and 2,570 women were available. Only participants with 27 present teeth were eligible for inclusion in the analysis, giving a total of 218 men and 428 women. Third molars were excluded from the study. The bilateral total of each type of tooth was obtained. The mandibular first molar was missing in 26.7% of the men and 36.2% of the women among 40-year-olds and 35.3% of the men and 29.8% of the women among 60-year-olds. The mandibular second molar was missing in 14.7% of the men and 12.5% of the women among 40-year-olds, and 17.6% of the men and 18.4% of the women among 60-year-olds. Significant differences were observed between men and women in the mandibular second premolars and first molars among 40-year-olds. These results suggest that we need to pay more attention to individual teeth which are at particularly high risk for tooth loss, namely the mandibular first and second molars, and especially the mandibular first molars in middle-aged women.

We conducted oral examinations and dietary surveys on a total of 141 subjects with an average age of 80 years or more-specifically, seniors (S-group) living in a health service facility for the elderly and patients with mild dementia (SD-group) living in a special nursing home for the elderly. All were assumed to have a roughly uniform diet. We investigated which factors contributed to their dietary intake, and the relationship between dietary intake and number of present teeth (PT). Factors affecting total energy of the subjects and those in the S-group were body weight and number of PT. No factors were recognized as having a relationship with total energy in the SD-group. A significant difference was found in males in the S-group in that those in the "five PT or more" group had higher levels of carbohydrates and vitamin B1) than those in the "four PT or less" group. However, significant differences were found in the SD-group in that subjects in the "five PT or more" group had higher levels of carbohydrates, calcium, iron, and vitamins A, B1, B2, and C than those in the "four PT or less" group. Significant differences were seen in both groups for female patients in the nursing home with regard to total energy, proteins, carbohydrates, iron, vitamin B1, and fiber intake. No significant differences were recognized, however, for females in the SD-group. Reductions in dietary intake should be considered from the perspective of nutritional status, which is a problem that can be resolved through dental treatment. This study found that recovery of chewing ability in seniors was essential not only to maintain nutritional status, but also to fully bring out all the functions of the foods themselves.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of the iterative reconstruction (IR) technique for quantitative bronchial assessment during low-dose computed tomography (CT) as a substitute for standard-dose CT in patients with/without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Fifty patients (mean age, 69.2; mean % predicted FEV1, 79.4) underwent standard-dose CT (150mAs) and low-dose CT (25mAs). Except for tube current, the imaging parameters were identical for both protocols. The aim of this study was to determine age- and sex-specific differences in the ratio of occluding pairs (OPs) to number of present teeth (PT). The data were obtained from a periodontal disease examination carried out under a health promotion law in a city located northeast of Tokyo, Japan, in 2005. Data from a total of 5,131 (1,735 male and 3,396 female) 40-, 50-, and 60-year-old participants were analysed in this study. Occluding pairs were counted by analysing dental charts. Sex-related differences in the ratio of mean PT to OPs were found at 30 PT in 40-year-olds, at 22 PT and 28 PT in 50-year-olds, and at 24 PT and 28 PT in 60-year-olds. Age differences were only found at 28 PT in males. These differences in the ratio of PT to OPs were influenced by the presence of third molars and the type of tooth loss pattern. In some cases the PT-to-OP ratio is influenced by age and sex, but these differences are very small. Age and sex need to be considered when using PT to estimate OPs.

The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of adaptive iterative dose reduction using 3D processing (AIDR 3D) for image noise reduction and assessment of radiologic findings obtained with reduced- and low-dose chest CT in patients with various pulmonary diseases.Chest CT examinations at three different tube current settings and using 16- and 64-MDCT scanners were performed for 37 patients. Standard-dose (150 mAs) data were reconstructed as thin-section CT without AIDR 3D, and low-dose (25 mAs) and reduced-dose (50 mAs) data were reconstructed as thin-section CT without and with AIDR 3D. To compare image quality, image noises at all CT doses were quantitatively assessed by region of interest measurements. For comparison of radiologic finding assessments, likelihoods of occurrence of emphysema, ground-glass opacity, reticular opacity, bronchiectasis, honeycomb pattern, and nodules were evaluated on a 5-point scale. Then, image noise and agreements of radiologic findings between standard-dose CT and others were statistically evaluated.The image quality scores of reduced- and low-dose CT without AIDR 3D were significantly lower than those of both protocols with AIDR 3D and standard-dose CT (p0.05). All intermethod agreements for emphysema, ground-glass opacity, bronchiectasis, honeycomb pattern, and nodules, except for those observed on low-dose CT without AIDR 3D, were almost perfect (κ0.81).AIDR 3D is useful for image noise reduction and assessment of radiologic findings obtained with reduced- and low-dose CT for patients with various pulmonary diseases.

The aim of this study was to determine the percentage of participants in each of the six Eichner Index groups by number of present teeth (PT). The data were obtained from a periodontal disease examination carried out under a health promotion law in a city located northeast of Tokyo, Japan, in 2005. Data from a total of 1,549 (524 male and 1,025 female) 60-year-old participants were analyzed in this study. Number of occlusal supports was counted by analyzing dental charts. The Eichner Index was used to group the participants into six groups based on distribution of occlusal support teeth. The percentage of patients in Group A with 24 PT was 31.4%; none in Group A had fewer than 19 PT. The percentage in Groups A, B1, and B2 with between 20 and 28 PT was above 50%; the number of participants in these groups with fewer than 20 PT decreased rapidly. Those with fewer than 16 PT were almost found in Groups B3, B4 and C. Only a few patients in Group C had between 10 and 14 PT; those with fewer than 9 PT were only found in Groups B4 or C. Based on these results, the Eichner Index category of a given participant can be estimated from number of PT.

We conducted a survey to investigate the status regarding the implementation of oral health care for inpatients aged 65 years and older who were in the acute stages of stroke and to examine the factors related to the details of excellent model hospitals.We sent a questionnaire on oral health care targeting all 8089 hospitals in Japan. On the basis of the responses obtained from the hospitals, we conducted a survey to analyze the factors defining what are known to be excellent model hospitals. We then conducted a logistic regression analysis using a stepwise procedure. Replies were received from 2444 of the 8089 hospitals (30.2%): 91.8% of the hospitals reported that oral health care was a part of the daily nursing routine while 91.2% of the hospitals considered that aspiration pneumonia could be prevented by appropriate oral health care. Only 30% of the nurses had undergone oral hygiene training. Among the factors involved in excellent model hospitals, we observed a strong correlation with a sense of the necessity for oral health care, oral hygiene training for nurses and a large number of hospital beds.Large scale hospitals tend to be more interested in oral health care than smaller hospitals. Providing oral health care is already common in acute hospitals in Japan. There is a great demand for oral hygiene training and obtaining information from dental professionals. It is important to promote the cooperation between dental and nursing personnel within hospitals regarding oral hygiene training.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether percentile curves for food acceptance response scores were useful in assessing oral and occlusal conditions. We used data obtained from Chiba City Patient Surveys (males: 1,276, females: 1,381, aged 20 to 64), which were conducted in 1998 and 1999. Subjects were assigned scores of between 1 and 4 for 31 different kinds of food based on their food acceptance responses. Occlusal conditions were measured with pressure-sensitive sheets. We calculated the percentile values from 5 to 95 at intervals of five years. We divided the subjects into two groups at the twenty-fifth percentile and statistically analyzed various oral conditions in the two groups. Significant differences were found between them in the mean numbers of present, sound, and missing teeth for almost all age groups. Moreover, there were significant differences in tooth-contact area and occlusal force between the two groups. The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that the scores had a stronger correlation with occlusal conditions than number of teeth in 55-year-olds, although the effect teeth-factors had on scores was more significant in 45- to 50-year-old males. Females' scores had a stronger correlation with occlusal conditions than number of teeth in all age groups. These results indicate that the questionnaire on the acceptance of 31 different kinds of food is useful in providing a basis for oral health instruction and dental treatment aimed at improving chewing ability in adults.
